#leadupchat focuses on school leadership broadly, culture, changing paradigms, and the growth mindset. It's an Ed movement focused on Leadership, Culture, Growth and Shifts on Saturdays at 8:30am CST, founded by Jeff Veal (@heffrey) and Nathan Lang (@nalang1).
I'm looking forward to hosting #LeadLAP this morning in one hour. I hope you'll join us at 10:30 EST/7:30 PST/9:30 CST - We're talking school culture #LeadupChat#NJED#tlap#makeitreal
Welcome to #leadupchat! Super pumped to be co-hosting with my buddy @heffrey as we finish the Develop and Deliver series: "So You Went To A Conference, Did You?" Please introduce yourself and let us know the last conference you went to?
My name is Todd Schmidt, and I am an elementary principal in CA. My last conference was the amazing #CUE18 national conference in Palm Springs @cueinc#LeadUpChat
Good morning tribe! Jeff here, co-creator of #LeadUpChat, ready to jump back in & lead with my buddy @tsschmidty. After some much needed Spring break time w/ the family excited to learn together (my son learned tortilla making). Dialing in from almost sunny North Texas today.
Good morning, friends! Fourth grade teacher, instructional tech guy, and future admin from central Illinois, still wondering why we have snow at the end of Spring Break. #leadupchat
Jim, CAO, Boone County Schools in Northern KY - last conf = Chan Zuckerburg Initiative Superintendents Convening - learned a lot about personalizing learning #LeadUpChat
WHAT UP!! Kaleb, creative director at High Tech High, San Diego. SUPER STOKED to be with the TRIBE spreading HOPE, GRACE and LOVE this Morning!! #leadupchat
Oh, the last conference I went to was the Joint Annual Conference of IASB, IASA, and IASBO, Illinois' premiere school leadership conference. #leadupchat
Welcome Bethany! ISTE was a great conference for sure. @vealheidi will be there presenting this year while I hold the fort down back home. Will you be going?
A1: find a way to share with whoever will listen and start/continue the conversations and learning that inspired me while I was there; usually includes overwhelming @aheath2@lacey_grimm and @lpapplegirl 🤪 #leadupchat
A1 1st... I share from the Conference via twitter, then Implement in the classroom and leave an open door. 2nd Share over coffee, lunch, hallway time. #leadupchat
A1: I love to share out! In my previous district, it was mandatory for anyone that went to a conference/workshop to share something they learned or a strategy at the next faculty meeting. Excitement is contagious!! #leadupchat
A1: I think part of the answer comes from what you do during the conference. Connect with others. Synthesize what you learned and commit to action. Celebrate those who shared their learning with you. Then--calendar your action steps so you make it happen. #leadupchat
A1 If you’ve gained something relevant to your missing, share how it “folds in” & make a plan to share others, provide follow up coaching and support. Excitement without action will get you nowhere #leadupchat
A1: I come back and share what I learned or model something right away while it’s fresh. I let people know I went and what I learned to model continuous growth #leadupchat
A1: Hopefully, you had a collaborative partner who attended with you. Nothing keeps up the momentum like a partner who you can bounce ideas off of, get feedback from on the things you start to try out #leadupchat
A2) after a conference, put ideas into action right away. Don’t wait to have it perfect. See how it goes, tweak, get feedback from students and colleagues, build momentum. #leadupchat
A1: We had a Google Extravaganza yesterday during our teacher planning day. We had 28 teachers/staff taking Google certification exams. This was a culminating event for a year long tech PD our system calls Level Up. I love celebrating Ts successes and hard work!! #leadupchat
A1: I blog about my experiences, keep my notes and handouts, and bug the h*ck out of my co-workers as I beg them to try out a new idea with me! #leadupchat
A1: Two ways: First, review and consolidate my notes quickly after the conference, and second, choose one new thing to try/apply within the first week or two after the conference. #LeadUpChat
A1: I tweet continually when I am at any professional learning, and use the hashtag (if available) and my school's learning hashtag, #CEtribe. This helps me reflect on what I was excited about, and to develop a plan for sharing! #leadupchat
A1: I share at least one "essential" from education conferences with motivated folks who will implement quickly and share with others. I don't try to follow up on everything I learned. #leadupchat
A1: Conferences pump me up! I love to share resources and ideas in my newsletters and workshops when I get back. My last conference was the Apple Conference at Skidmore College. I learned a ton about App Wheels for Assistive Tech #leadupchat
A1: Revistit the goals and priorities we have agreed upon as a team, assess where the great stuff from the conferences fits into our work, and systematically roll it out with follow up and feedback designed into the process. Don’t just throw more stuff at people! #Leadupchat
A1 Collaborate with leadership team and teacher leader team members to share the information received during the conference. This is followed by identifying key components of the practices observed at the conference and strategically using them in our school #leadupchat
A1: I love to share out! In my previous district, it was mandatory for anyone that went to a conference/workshop to share something they learned or a strategy at the next faculty meeting. Excitement is contagious!! #leadupchat
A1: I send emails and tweet to share info I'm learning during the conferences - that way when I get back we can talk about it. No point in holding all of the learning. Attend and share! #leadupchat
Q1. The key is to set aside a deliberate time in your schedule to plan strategically for how you can put what you’ve learned into practice. If you don’t do that, the learning remains at the conference when you physically leave it. Be intentional! #leadupchat
A1: ReflECT, ConnECT, ProjECT - reflect on learning, connect to my context & colleagues, and projECT what the potential might be for new application #LeadUpChat
A1: When we come down from "mountain top experience" we need a plan.
1. What am I going to do?
2. Who am I going to invite to work with me,
3. What resources will I need. #leadupchat
"Excitement without action will get you nowhere." Such a great point. Maybe we need to have conference accountability partners like we have blogging accountability partners or running accountability partners? :) #leadupchat
A1 If you’ve gained something relevant to your missing, share how it “folds in” & make a plan to share others, provide follow up coaching and support. Excitement without action will get you nowhere #leadupchat
A1: FIRST, distribute goodies to your team. Meet with Ts about the learning that would benefit Ss. Our school has seen tremendous instructional shifts bc the T team is open trying new ideas. #LeadUpChat
A1: I love to share out! In my previous district, it was mandatory for anyone that went to a conference/workshop to share something they learned or a strategy at the next faculty meeting. Excitement is contagious!! #leadupchat
Like the reflection piece here, Lorie. It's essential when we attend conferences, receive a lot of great information, and desire to present it to our teams in a coherent manner #leadupchat
A1: When coming back from a conference, I think it is important to synthesize and FOCUS! It can be challenging to not want to go crazy trying to over-implement. #leadupchat
Yep! That's why attendees alternately just call it the Triple I or the the JAC! (I think we should go all in and call it the JACIASBIASAIASBO but no one has aksed me.) #leadupchat
A1: I'm big note taker , and when I learn something and a teacher comes to mind, I write the name beside my notes so I can remember to share. Sometimes it's best to share some things individually b/c not everyone is ready for it--plus peers can teach! #leadupchat
Key for me is sharing the information via twitter AND RTing the learning from others tweets.
A huge pet peeve of mine is the lack of RTing. Collectively WE can share & learn so much more thanks to the power of social media. More sharing = more learning! #leadupchat
Share conference info thru tweeting, conversations and a little at a time in my weekly faculty/staff blog. Hopefully I come back energized! #LeadUpChat
A1) First, shares share share. Then walk the walk. Communicate that walking with what works and what isn’t working. If we don’t put into practice ourselves, no one will buy into the great ideas we’ve learned about #leadupchat
I do that a lot with Twitter...that way I can share the resource right away!
I know my staff just LOVES that, but it's one way to pass on the excitement!
#leadupchat
A1: I'm big note taker , and when I learn something and a teacher comes to mind, I write the name beside my notes so I can remember to share. Sometimes it's best to share some things individually b/c not everyone is ready for it--plus peers can teach! #leadupchat
"Get feedback on the things you start to try out"--Love this! You not only demonstrate growth mindset by going to the conference in the first place but also through your willingness to ask for feedback on your implementation. Fantastic!! #leadupchat
A1: Hopefully, you had a collaborative partner who attended with you. Nothing keeps up the momentum like a partner who you can bounce ideas off of, get feedback from on the things you start to try out #leadupchat
Agree. Being intentional about having protected time to share with our team at our schools is essential to turning around the practices that we learn at conferences #leadupchat
Like the reflection piece here, Lorie. It's essential when we attend conferences, receive a lot of great information, and desire to present it to our teams in a coherent manner #leadupchat
A1b: I bookmark the resources shared at the conference and revisit those regularly to pull gems from them and if appropriate share with my team—sharing is caring #leadupchat
A1: It is key to attend conferences that are closely connected to the work you are doing. Then use the learning to create related/strategic/intentional ACTION #leadupchat
A1. It’s not just about what we learn but we we DO with what we learn. Knowledge without action doesn’t change anything or impact practice. Plan-Study-Do-Too often folks fail at the last step. The gap between knowing & doing is the discipline needed to follow through! #leadupchat
Yes! It can be like drinking from a hose and the desire to implement everything RIGHT NOW! Avoid the temptation...don't look into the light. #Leadupchat
A1 I always start with my school leadership team. This is our guiding coalition in all that we do. We debrief and think about the most effective way to implement what we have learned. #leadupchat
A1b: I bookmark the resources shared at the conference and revisit those regularly to pull gems from them and if appropriate share with my team—sharing is caring #leadupchat
A1: Inspiration is all around us. The challenge comes from the DOING. Seek Inspiration and TEST ideas--from low-hanging fruit to moonshot thinking #LeadUpchat
A2: Not everything you bring home will fit in your closet or in your mission. If it is "great" but doesn't have a clear place in your plan, it doesn't need to take your time and space. Be intentional at all times. #leadupchat
A2: avoid making that determination in isolation :) let the post conference sharing and conversation decide which ideas to explore more, first. #leadupchat
What an fantastic approach! The conference is only as good as the changes we implement as a result of our learning. Accountability partners help us with implementation. #leadupchat
A2 I think you choose the one that works the best for what you are already doing or the direction you want to go. Maybe a better way of doing something or a logical next step. #leadupchat
A2: When I start something new, I start with a quick win. What can I do tomorrow, in a month, in a semester, and during the year?Sometimes, though, change can't wait for good timing. #leadupchat
A2 - It’s important to connect with the things that are already working for teachers and students...know the pulse and culture of your building to help inform team decision making #leadupchat
A2. Those who experience success in improving their organization haven’t found the secret program, miracle, etc. There are no easy answers. What they do well is prioritize, focus, and simplify their efforts while creating a structure for success first. #leadupchat
A2: Timing is everything. Some ideas can be shared immediately, while others will need to wait. Some can be shared with a whole staff, and some need to be shared as needed. Personalize the sharing=personalize the learning. #leadupchat
A2: I often survey teachers to see what they want next. I use Smore newsletters for the analytics and see where teachers click. That often becomes my next workshop. And I ask teachers before I start any workshop/training what they need. #leadupchat
A2) after a conference, which idea were you most excited about? Try it out ASAP since your excitement will be contagious and build momentum #leadupchat
A2: I really try and start with relevancy that supports current initiatives or will compliment the current work as nothing worse than throwing more and more at people and hoping something sticks #leadupchat
A2) First you have to ask “how will this benefit the students in THIS school”. Just because it worked in one building doesn’t mean it’s easily transferable to yours. Focus on what’s going to benefit the students in YOUR building first #leadupchat
A2: Not to be all Stephen Covey-ey, but I begin with the end in mind. I attend sessions that directly relate to what I'm trying to do better in my building so that I am focused going in and focused coming out. The SIP is only good if we actually use it! #LeadUpChat
A2: Evaluate your options based on your WHY! Which option do you see that fits your vision and will most positively impact student learning #leadupchat
A2: I have to answer the following. How will it affect Ss or Staffulty? How can I start small and scale later. Who needs to be the activator? Will it build people? #leadupchat
A1: Make a plan with action steps before ever leaving each day of the conference. Recap the major learning for the entire conference and develop action plan for redelivery and implementation. #leadupchat
A2 The practices that we learn about in conferences and implement in our schools has to be a collaborative decision. When our team members contribute to implementation plans, this increases the chance that the plan will work to support Ss success #leadupchat
A2) In the marketplace of ideas and the great ones you come back with from a conference or seminar it's imperative you understand the unique DNA of your school. Align to your mission, values, beliefs, and strategies. #LeadUpChat
A2: In our building, first there is district initiatives, followed closely by more building-specific ideas from our building leadership team (which is phenomenal in our building. So blessed!) #leadupchat
A2 It has to align to your vision & timing is everything. Is it something that can be implemented immediately? Do we need a plan for next school year to start from day 1? Will it work for our school/kids? #leadupchat
A2: It has to lend some flavor to what we are already doing. Can’t be a new piece of candy. Beware: Many a school have choked on new big pieces of candy fresh off an exciting conference #LeadUpChat
A2. We have to end the “dessert smorgasbord” syndrome- desperation leads us to try everything instead of the RIGHT thing. Quality trumps quantity-always. Doing a lot doesn’t equate to doing the right work that will lead to improved outcomes. Focus & Simplify! #leadupchat
A1: I not only take notes & pictures, but I plan at least one lesson, activity, or even unit in which I can incorporate what I learned. If I don’t make a concrete plan, then the energy and enthusiasm fades without positive results. #leadupchat#NCTEchat#nctevillage#edchat
A2: I like to start with tips to promote culture. We can take those back right away to enhance our culture. Next, those strategies that align with our work and can cross multiple contexts. Finally, more specific work. All followed up by a feedback loop! #Leadupchat
A2: Conferences can be overwhelming. It's important to synthesize our learning. Isolate one nugget of knowledge that is a high priority based on vision, mission, goals for the year. Then ask ourselves what we will do differently because of what we learned. #leadupchat
A2b: If the people you work with panic because you are going to conference and are going to come back hyper-excited (AGAIN) adding more to their plates, you are doing it wrong. #leadupchat
So true! It is easy to get caught up in the excitement for what we have learned. It probably ignites our passions. That does not mean it will hit everyone else in the same way or add and not just add on. #leadupchat
A2) Your role may simply be to communicate the learning and allow your "levers" or "doers" on your campus to implement. Have to make the idea collaborative or it may just become another "hobby project." Great ideas don't tend to roll out in a day. #LeadUpChat
A2: Best ideas come from group discussions, using tips & tricks from Design Thinking - even if we don’t use the whole process. Focus in on purpose & why we would do something. “Is this us?” “Does it make us stronger & better —> aka: how does it sharpen the sword?” #leadupchat
A2: I try to find something I can implement myself first to avoid putting more on my team's plates...for example, I am super pumped to try out the Google Forms ideas from @brentcoley for feedback, recognition, and organization
#leadupchat
Well-said. Sometimes I leave a conference deeply inspired, but clear that we're on the right track with what we're already doing and that "big new idea" isn't what we need. I'm content to leave inspired. #leadupchat
Right, Joe. Linking new learning we receive at conferences to our existing vision is essential. Important that our team members are able to make that connection and use the new information to support our existing goals #leadupchat
And that marketplace is bigger than ever! We have to keep in mind that "programs" aren't the solution. It's the fit for the students and fidelity with which instruction is implemented #leadupchat
A2) In the marketplace of ideas and the great ones you come back with from a conference or seminar it's imperative you understand the unique DNA of your school. Align to your mission, values, beliefs, and strategies. #LeadUpChat
A2. Align your efforts to your needs. It’s that simple. Here’s an exception help you quickly see misalignment. How well matched are your PD offerings to your school improvement goals? If your goal is to improve reading achievement & most of your PD focuses on math?🧐 #leadupchat
A2 First get to know your students—strengths, skills, passions as well as areas that need improvement. By knowing your students, you can identify which applications and resources would work best #leadupchat
A2: Best ideas come from group discussions, using tips & tricks from Design Thinking - even if we don’t use the whole process. Focus in on purpose & why we would do something. “Is this us?” “Does it make us stronger & better —> aka: how does it sharpen the sword?” #leadupchat
Sometimes you may leave a conference or learning opportunity not learning something new and shiny, but find that it is reinforcing what you are already doing. Celebrate this and consider how to refine your process or invite more stakeholders to expand the greatness. #LeadUpChat
A1A2) our school sets SMART goals. At a conference I tend to pick sessions that align with those established goals. It is easy then to implement pieces learned as it already aligns. The new info helps get to established goals #leadupchat
A2: identify what can impact student learning most significantly. Flesh out that plan first. Work with a core group of teachers to determine how this strategy, process, etc can be most effective in your school. #leadupchat
I think of this constantly. I think the best thing to do is to know them well, and ask them upfront if it is too much, discuss what would be better regarding a timeline or learning more about the idea before putting into place. Transparency on both sides. #leadupchat
A2 I prioritize. Some ideas blend in to things I’m already doing, some are on the back burner for future use and some I pass along to others.#leadupchat
Right-on! New connections and conversations are "food" for educators and may just be the recharge that re-centers you to be a great educator. #leadupchat
I agree! It's kind of like the approach we take with data. Come to the data with a question(s) & use the data to answer the question(s). Do the same with conferences. Come to the conference with a question(s) & then seek learning that addresses your question(s). #leadupchat
Sometimes, I will attend a session from someone I have already heard from just to reinforce the ideas...
Kind of like rewatching a movie or rereading a book to catch something you may have missed!
#leadupchat
Sometimes you may leave a conference or learning opportunity not learning something new and shiny, but find that it is reinforcing what you are already doing. Celebrate this and consider how to refine your process or invite more stakeholders to expand the greatness. #LeadUpChat
A3: In leading an internal academy rather than a full school, I probably have fewer things to consider when implementing and idea. I have more freedom to try something and document where it leads. #LeadUpChat
A2: or sometimes we are using a recommended strategy or procedure serendipitously but don’t know the “why” behind it. I like to build that understanding #LeadUpChat
A2: I start with the thing that gets me fired up. If I’m really into an idea or initiative & can foresee the impact of the program on students, then I know it’s worth proceeding. It’s hard to move forward with an idea you don’t #believein. #leadupchat#edchat#JoyfulLeaders
A3. Define what successful implementation looks like and determine what evidence you will use to profess monitor implementation. Make sure resources and support for those putting the practice in place is available. Schedule time to provide quality feedback! #leadupchat
A3: The first step for implementing something from a conference is to talk to like-minded individuals in building/district about what was learned and invite them to explore with me. This is especially important when I'm the only one who was able to attend! #LeadUpChat
A2: Not everything you bring home will fit in your closet or in your mission. If it is "great" but doesn't have a clear place in your plan, it doesn't need to take your time and space. Be intentional at all times. #leadupchat
A3: First: SCRATCH "Implementation"
Start with:
What you have NOTICED about the strengths, interests, and curiosities of the students AND their teachers?
Empathy is Innovation Fuel.
#LeadUpchat
A3: Sometimes we can share things out without expectation of implementation...for a while! I have learned that many will ask how to implement when they have seen the idea be effective when it is modeled. #leadupchat
A3: I feel that the first step should be an in-depth conversation with building administration. Without his/her approval it could make the implementation more difficult. #leadupchat
A3 If it is something in my own classroom than I can just plan, implement and share later. It if is something for the school than taking it to the team and discussing the why and what might be the group next step is necessary. #leadupchat
Borrowing this brilliance from Rayshell: "be open to new ideas that may disrupt our work in a way that creates an opportunity for innovative systems and practices." #leadupchat
I like this idea! What is our work! How can this conference enhance it? And, be open to new ideas that may disrupt our work in a way that creates an opportunity for innovative systems and practices!
A3: Sharing with school influencers, getting their input and designing a plan together is important. Taking the pulse of your culture and moving from there will affect how any change is perceived. #leadupchat
A3. Define what successful implementation looks like and determine what evidence you will use to progress monitor implementation. Make sure resources and support for those putting the practice in place is available. Schedule time to provide quality feedback! #leadupchat
I kind of have the bias for looking for something that has the potential to disrupt. Disruption in education could be a whole new chat topic! #LeadUpChat
A3) I like to start with an idea that I can do before I ask others. That way I can model or figure out a strategy and how it can help others. Many times I start before I even leave the conference because I am so excited! #leadupchat
A3 Haven't done this - it just came to me. Engage staff/team in a conversation about needs (that this idea may fill). It may excite you, but others may not find the same value OR have a different solution in mind. You'll find Empowerment/voice/focus #leadupchat
A3 Define what the end goal looks like, collaborate, build a core, hit the ground running. Adjust and course correct as needed. On board as part of the process. #leadupchat
A3: let teachers be the students. Model a lesson where you use the new app/tech and let them stop for questions along the way. I like to use #hyperdocs for PD since they can work at their pace and explore freely. #leadupchat
A3: The first step to implementing a new idea is to share it, articulate it, and see if others can see its value. If others can't see it, I know I'm rowing a boat a loan and either have to re-communicate or re-think the idea. #leadupchat
Great perspective about ditching implemtation. Reflection is important about what pieces to bring home to discuss & share & with whom. I like the pause button you provided. #LeadUpchat
A3: Worst things I do is get an itch because I heard/learned something new & want to implement. Rather, How Might WE an idea. How does it fit & make sense —> what issue does it address & how then does narrative get framed towards a possibility aiming back to Our WHY. #leadupchat
My book, You’re Hired: The Inside Secrets to Landing Your School #Leadership Job is a guide that coaches school and district leadership candidates through the hiring process. Check it out https://t.co/RgOPNfRRg1#leadupchat#edchat
A3: Gather a group of rockstar people to help get over speed bumps, who can help plan and strengthen the work, and who will be critical friends. Call it a tribe, a #pln, a cohort, or friends. Get your people and get started! #leadupchat
I think of this constantly. I think the best thing to do is to know them well, and ask them upfront if it is too much, discuss what would be better regarding a timeline or learning more about the idea before putting into place. Transparency on both sides. #leadupchat
A3: Start sharing and talking with other admin and teacher leaders about it. The best way to implement something new is to model it as a leader. Model what you seek. #leadupchat
Yes - a needs assessment. Often people may not realize the need until there is a conversation. We can do better at having conversations in education. We blame the lack of time but we make time for what is important. #LeadUpChat
@kalebrashad - YOU impressed upon me the importance of empathy in this context at @EdLeader21 (wasn’t that you?) and that is an example - I brought that idea back and integrated it into my conversations about design thinking - thank you! #LeadUpChat
A3: First: SCRATCH "Implementation"
Start with:
What you have NOTICED about the strengths, interests, and curiosities of the students AND their teachers?
Empathy is Innovation Fuel.
#LeadUpchat
A3: Begin by talking one to one with the teacher-leaders throughout the building and getting feedback. Explicitly discuss the ‘why’ behind it and how it will improve our school. #leadupchat
This guy is like the Buddha of education. I can’t get enough of what he says and his outlook. So grounded, so ripe, so true to the core. We would all be better by studying how he works. Thank you @kalebrashad#leadupchat
A3: First: SCRATCH "Implementation"
Start with:
What you have NOTICED about the strengths, interests, and curiosities of the students AND their teachers?
Empathy is Innovation Fuel.
#LeadUpchat
A3: When admin come back showing enthusiasm and support for teacher learning with the new idea-->game changer. It is all in the delivery and support offered. #leadupchat
A3: Rumination & reflection are important following a conference. Implementing feels heavy handed - allowing colleagues time to ponder how they might fold in or try the ideas allows them to have agency #leadupchat
Of course, we also have to be careful to not play favourites. I try to find something for everyone to help all grow professionally and help improve the school so that they can all lift where they are. #leadupchat
A3. We must plan for implementation before we do the implementing! Folks are quick to abandon a strategy due to it not working, but often it’s due to a failure to plan for implementation. 🤓 #leadupchat
Love this! Students are so insightful about teaching and learning when given the chance to express themselves. After all, they're the recipients of these ideas. #leadupchat
Q4 is all about either finding that admin support (if you are a classroom teacher) or getting teacher buy-in (if you are an admin)...both equally challenging!
#LeadUpChat
A3: Context and Audience often determine this. Ex... If it is school (system) wide, maybe start planting seeds, having convos, getting feedback, checking the research. Or, if it is classroom practice, taking it to early adopters for feedback..... #Leadupchat
A3: Leadership lesson learned...talk to key players and massage the idea with them. Look for potential barriers & brainstorm how to overcome them. Then act. Go slow to go fast. If it is worth implementing, it is worth implementing well. #leadupchat
A3: Identify your core group of Ts, start small. Present your action steps from the new learning and seek the group’s feedback. Identify the strategy that moves the marker on student learning. Ts implement, you observe, spotlight S learning in newsletter & Twitter. #leadupchat
I am a big proponent in "how" we present information. Often, this is the #1 we undermine great ideas, with a bad roll out. Effective communication is a hallmark of a transformative learner/leader. #LeadUpChat
A3: When admin come back showing enthusiasm and support for teacher learning with the new idea-->game changer. It is all in the delivery and support offered. #leadupchat
A4 - Besides showing connections to what they are already doing, show that whatever it is works...compare to another school like yours. Completely depends on the culture and teachers in your building though #leadupchat
A4: I think that Admin. and/or teachers need to see the value in the idea. How will it support their current teaching? How will it support Ss? All of this without putting more on their plate. #leadupchat
A3: INNOVATION is TEAM SPORT and it's a PROCESS. When done well (sustainably and organically), it starts with DEEP EMPATHY WORK and moves toward small-scale courageous acts #leadupchat
Innovation by INVITATION, not mandate.
A4: Many ideas/tools/strategies can be embedded into adult learning so teachers can become familiar with them and see how they can impact students' learning. #leadupchat
A4: Support comes with work. It is hard to support someone who shares an idea but won't personally work to make it happen. Rollup your sleeves and create buy-in side by side. #leadupchat
A3. Define what successful implementation looks like and determine what evidence you will use to progress monitor implementation. Make sure resources and support for those putting the practice in place is available. Schedule time to provide quality feedback! #leadupchat
A4 I like to have one or two of our more innovative teachers take it for a trial run or get them on board and then give them the opportunity to share at a staff meeting or PD session. #notfromthetop#leadupchat
Q4 is all about either finding that admin support (if you are a classroom teacher) or getting teacher buy-in (if you are an admin)...both equally challenging!
#LeadUpChat
A5: Collaborate with admin. Work together as a team. I just recently did that with my principal @matthew_arend and our ideas combined together made for greater learning for my students. #leadupchat
A4) Got to try it out yourself first. I put it into practice in my room, and I share what works and what didn’t work. Then share share share! #leadupchat
A4: You need to have clear answers to why it is important and how it will help students. If you can clearly explain those two things, administrators and teachers should not only buy-in but #believein the idea. #leadupchat#edchat
Q4: Relationships are key! Trust, enthusiasm, shared vision & values. Talking with your teammates & explaining WHY! Even the naysayers might be on board if they support you & trust you & believe your love of the kids! #leadupchat
A4 I like to have one or two of our more innovative teachers take it for a trial run or get them on board and then give them the opportunity to share at a staff meeting or PD session. #notfromthetop#leadupchat
I have started saying to teachers and kids, "I have your back," "Know that I support you." I thought my sentiment was obvious, but saying it aloud has made a huge difference in our school tone. #leadupchat
Absolutely! Love trying something out in a staff meeting so Ts can get some hands-on experience! I also offer sign-ups where I will come in an either do it with the students myself or help the teacher put it in place with his/her class!
#leadupchat
A4: Many ideas/tools/strategies can be embedded into adult learning so teachers can become familiar with them and see how they can impact students' learning. #leadupchat
A4: Collaborate with admin. Work together as a team. I just recently did that with my principal @matthew_arend and our ideas combined together made for greater learning for my students. #leadupchat
A4 I keep coming back to: We try new things not because we are doing a bad job, but its because we can always be better & the biggest challenge is moving the needle from #G2Great. Buy-in through vision and capacity building. #leadupchat
You must be reading #PowerOfMoments! Great stories about leading change by helping others first understand the NEED. Build a sense of urgency by helping others see the NEED before offering the solution. It takes time and careful planning--but absolutely worth it. #leadupchat
Yes - a needs assessment. Often people may not realize the need until there is a conversation. We can do better at having conversations in education. We blame the lack of time but we make time for what is important. #LeadUpChat

A4: buy-in on either side of that teacher-admin aisle is going to be a function of how much trust has been built across that aisle in the first place. No practice w trust? then best not “pass go” w new idea #leadupchat
A4: A T with a new idea - I ask them to Explain the why & how it helps Ss. If Ss can learn from this idea —> YES YES YES stamped across my face. We learn by doing - so let’s get busy! #leadupchat
A4: Listen, listen, listen: before I try to "get" teacher buy-in, I listen to how they perceive a new idea. It has to be a genuine conversation with listening rather than me getting my way. #leadupchat
Q4: Relationships are key! Trust, enthusiasm, shared vision & values. Talking with your teammates & explaining WHY! Even the naysayers might be on board if they support you & trust you & believe your love of the kids! #leadupchat
My thought partner is usually the one to steers me through the fog of all my 'what -ifs' to get to the point where execution is highly likely... and more than that... it's usually highly successful...#leadupchat#thoughtpartner

that is a book I have not read but continues to be highly recommended to me from folks like @drneilgupta. I think I "need" to get my hands on it. #LeadUpChat
A4. When we plan for implementation, we can clearly articulate to Teachers what kind of PD, resources, support, and feedback we can reduce the uncertainty that comes with being expected to implement a new practice. #leadupchat
A4: "This is what we are doing. This is what we want to do. This is how we can bridge the gap." Resist the urge to bring giant charts and graphs. #LeadUpChat

Q4 is all about either finding that admin support (if you are a classroom teacher) or getting teacher buy-in (if you are an admin)...both equally challenging!
#LeadUpChat
Yes, you are right. Teachers need to feel like they are safe thinking outside the box and trying new ideas. It must be part of the culture. #leadupchat
A4: I want more than buy-in, ultimately. I want it internalized as part our "how" for our collective "why". Therefore, it is important to be very clear within oneself first. #leadupchat
A4: Listen to and know your teachers. Find out what they need and get out of their way! Support them with time, resources, opportunities to do peer observations/feedback. Let them share their excitement and it will spread #leadupchat
A4: All these questions are really about #CULTURE. All organizations have culture, but what culture are you operating within? Is it a culture that supports small bets, little experiments & hacking mentality? Is there trust? Is there a WHY? Grow the right culture 1st. #leadupchat

Literally just had this conversation. It is through the ongoing dialogue that everyone adds to their craft. Being in the conversation as a learner is critical! #leadupchat

When Ts see other Ts energized about implementing new learning they are 100 times more likely to buy in than if I just present something to them in a meeting. We must get core group of Ts to model the new strategy in the classroom and invite other Ts to observe. #leadupchat
A4: Include kids in the conversation because many times they can take a tool or strategy and run with it better than we can! They might be the ones to help teachers become more comfortable with the new. #leadupchat

It is always about the relationships first...
As an admin, allowing your team to take risks and support them while doing it is vitally important in building those relationships.

A4 As a parent in a district that is focused on what’s best for students, I find communicating crucial. I try to be specific and have the intention of being part of a solution.#leadupchat
A5: Love the line from Apollo 13: "Let's work the problem." Could be I do this on my own, with my students, or collaboratively with colleagues. #LeadUpChat
Yes! We call ours the agents of Edtech. They are innovative teachers that are willing to try new things and work out any kinks before the larger roll out. They also help create buy in at the campus level #leadupchat
A5 - This is a tough one! At times you need to back off on certain aspects and let things marinate while other times you need to keep on keeping on #leadupchat
A5: Listen. A lot. Let Ts share what is going well and what isn't. Let kids do the same. Most of the time, both groups have thoughts on how to tweak it or whether to continue pursuing it. #leadupchat

Q: What do we do with administrators who are not comfortable creating that environment; who prefer to maintain the status quo rather than walk the gauntlet of being an #innovationLeader ? #leadupchat
A4: Don’t sell to the unsellable! If there is are individuals with hesitations don’t wait! Invest in the Ts ready to hear the message, Create the energy so they will follow the crowd. #LeadUpchat
Such an important conversation and one of the hardest ones to lead in schools that are "good". How do we build a culture that desires "great"? Moving from good to great is what kids deserve. #leadupchat
A4 I keep coming back to: We try new things not because we are doing a bad job, but its because we can always be better & the biggest challenge is moving the needle from #G2Great. Buy-in through vision and capacity building. #leadupchat
A5 Oh so many times on our road to innovative teaching in every classroom! We regroup, take a trip back to the "why" and figure out how to give a gentle push to those who need it. #leadupchat
There it is...
Finding as many opportunities for our students to develop their passions through hands-on experiences is what makes them excited to come back that next day!

A5b: I turn to @voxer and @Twitter for inspiration to keep pushing and not floating as so many connected educators inspire me to keep on the mission and not fall in a rut or lull #leadupchat
A5: There will always be bumps in the road when you try something new. Treat it like it's part of the process and learning. Make it OK to take risks. #leadupchat
A5) Do. Not. Give. Up: Reflect what changes you can make to benefit the building/students. Communicate roadblocks and seek advice from others. #leadupchat
A4 anyone can “buy-in”—you want commitment from others to not only think it’s a good idea but to support it. You have to make it relevant to them. Show how it will compliment the school culture and/or their teaching style in a way that will improve student learning #leadupchat
A5: I always turn to the students to get feedback. Adding their voice to the learning process allows for them to be a partner in their learning... What would make this lesson better? #leadupchat
A5) When you hit a lull or a roadblock you face it. We can be tempted to power through but it may mean a normal rhythmic "pause" to reassess or refuel for the next step of the journey. Don't be afraid of wait time in the midst of thirsting for momentum. #LeadUpChat
Chris here and a little late to the game. Attempting to find a EDU chat to model to my graduate students at @solesteach in the power of these Edu chats. Happy to be here! #LeadUpchat
A5: Reflect - why is this not working? If you have built a level of trust with your Ts, they will tell you. Don't take it personal, be a problem solver and move on. #leadupchat
A5: You must recalibrate. Focus on the WHY rather than the naysayers or distractors. We were created as unique individuals who need to be comfortable in our #failingforward. Don’t get stuck on the roundabout! #LeadUpChat
A5: Stop and evaluate: is it me, is it us, is it "it," is it timing? If what we are doing isn't working, it is okay to either pause or stop and do something else, as long as we are keeping what's best for the students at the forefront. #LeadUpChat
A5: I prefer to think of “roadblocks” as more like “speedbumps.” They might slow us down, but they don’t won’t stop us. That’s when I gather my trusted people and find workable solutions to getting over the hump. Put it in 4WD and go baby, go! #leadupchat
A5: A Lull... we celebrate! Take time to reflect and lift our hands up and cheer for the work we have done!!! When we are done celebrating... we can share some best practices and celebrate even more!! Roadblocks.... consistency over time... messaging, clarifying... #LeadUpchat
A5. I put one foot in front of the other to keep moving because life is a marathon even when it feels like a sprint. Forward. Push through. #leadupchat
A5: We teach our students to always have a @growthmindset1 and persevere... so I must model and do the same! Shift your mindset from I can’t to I can TRY or I WILL. Build upon your strengths and remember: big things big, small things small... be open to opportunities! #leadupchat
That is difficult! You have to keep knocking at the door and sometimes ask for forgiveness rather than permission. (oh did I say that out loud?) It is harder for people to argue against something that is working already. #leadupchat
A:5.2 Transparency about things got going well can have benefits too, especially with students, as long as they can see how you are using what you have learned to make something better. #LeadUpChat
A5: Oh yes...it's going to happen. :) Determine the root cause of the challenge: inadequte implementation? insufficient communication? inappropriate timing? Ask for feedback. Then address the root cause. #leadupchat
Empathy, Listen, Conversation and empathy! Remove FEAR and have FUN! We are blessed to hold a SCARED role in the lives of Ts and Ss. Leaders are people too. #LeadUpchat
A5: let the Ss make the change and support them. Why not let their work, ideas for innovation, and creativity make the change? We saw how powerful the walkouts were, same can happen in the EduTech world as well. #LeadUpchat
A5: Identify it closely. Is is lack of capacity? Initiative fatigue? Lack of deep understanding by YOU about how it was going to affect outcomes and/or culture? Until you know what you hit, you can't know what you need to move it. #leadupchat
A5: Seek to gain perspective. Understand it. Learn from these perspectives. Ask better questions to enhance this understanding. Listen. And, engage in the thoughtful dialogue to follow. #leadupchat
A5: my new mantra: the obstacle is THE away. This is our profession. Obstacles are opportunities. Start with that mindset and be amazed by what you find on the other side!! #LeadUpChathttps://t.co/n42L7S0TKF
A5: Like a moth, I seek light. Reach out to colleagues for advise, encouragement, and a deeper well of positivity. Heck....bring it to TWITTER. Realizing you are not alone makes roadblocks seems less daunting #leadupchat
A5: When roadblocks come, I try to figure out why and try a new approach. Honestly, this is after I sit and spin and get frustrated. I'm working on changing the first response and jumping right to problem solving. I know roadblocks make things better in the end. #leadupchat
A5. Experience matters. I take time to reflect on all the obstacles I’ve overcome and it gives me confidence that whatever I am facing in that moment just isn’t familiar with how relentless I am...this too, shall learn. #leadupchat
A4: you have to know your building and what drives it. The answer is not the same for everyone. It’s cultural and time sensitive. How critical is the change? Can you ease in or do you need to make it an initiative or priority? #LeadUpChat
A5 acknowledge it. Discuss it. Don’t be afraid to alter the course. If it’s not what is best for kids then take the time to regroup and make changes. Transparency is key! #leadupchat
Q5: Dance it out! Shake it off! Push through it! Don't take it personally. Roadblocks can be an opportunity to reflect, pause, reevaluate & reenergize! #SilverLining#leadupchat
A5: Dance it out! Shake it off! Push through it! Don't take it personally. Roadblocks can be an opportunity to reflect, pause, reevaluate & reenergize! #SilverLining#leadupchat
I was surprised that kids at my school almost take pride in being able to talk about things we changed over time to make the school better. They see themselves as part of the team, not as "removed" from it. #leadupchat
Def true in my personal experience! I was a “Why” kid and a “Why” adult! I can’t get on board if I don’t have a noble and meaningful Why at the center to go back to! #LeadUpChat
A5: You must recalibrate. Focus on the WHY rather than the naysayers or distractors. We were created as unique individuals who need to be comfortable in our #failingforward. Don’t get stuck on the roundabout! #LeadUpChat
TRUTH. Invite leaders who are stuck to imagine and dream as a partner! Listen Listen Listen. Why are they fearful or following the status quo? #LeadUpchat
A5: Roadblocks? Over. Under. Through. Around. Wait for the road to clear? Get a bulldozer. Depends on your culture and the necessity and immediacy. #LeadUpChat
Problems and challenges need to be seen as opportunties. A mindset that gives you the lens to navigate your way through them. Something I am currently working on myself! #leadupchat
A5 Reflect, Revise & Improve through feedback, collaboration and innovation. Timing is important. What we learn in a conference will always remain in our ed toolbox! #leadupchat
A5: This doesn’t sound “academic” but it makes all the difference in a lull:
*Be Quiet,
*Be Calm,
*Be Humble,
*Be Pure.
These may show as on my knees in prayer, or a walk on beach all alone, or taking the lull as a sign I need to spend more time with my wife & kids. #LeadUpChat
A6 - Recently attended the National Service Learning Conference in MN and left with a plan to strategically infuse this into PBL and everyday learning to develop empathy and a sense of service with our students #leadupchat
A6: essential question from #GASL2018 When did the lowest 25% feel like they actively contributed to the classroom? Do ALL Ss in your building have a hip-2-hip relationship w an adult in the building? Leaning on @bcohen411 to keep me focused in these ?s #leadupchat
A6. It’s been some time since I’ve been to a conference, but I am excited to be attending and presenting @NAESP this summer in Orlando! Hope to meet some of you good folks there! #leadupchat
A5: I measured each students' growth-- not just passing or failing-- on their last state test. I was surprised to see that English Language Learners who had failed had still made tremendous growth and we should keep our course. Courtesy of a PD by @JamesNottinghm#leadupchat
Problems and challenges need to be seen as opportunities. A mindset that gives you the lens to navigate your way through them. Something I am currently working on myself! #leadupchat
Agreed! Schools need to stop seeing their goal as getting students to the next level of school. We say getting them ready for the future but we act like “what they need for next year” …mainly so the next teachers don’t get mad. #LeadUpchat

A6: the 30 second intentional idea from @Joe_Sanfelippo and #hackingleadership Watched everyone text someone randomly—takes less than 30 seconds and results were amazing #leadupchat
A6: I've been focusing on restorative practices this year. At one conference session I attended, the speaker reminded me that the offenders need to be able to decide how they will repair damaged relationships. I've been trying to include that in my approach. #LeadUpChat
A6: Best conference hands down for me was the PLC Institute by Solution Tree. This prepared me and my AP to implement the PLC process in a highly effective and functional way. I would highly recommend admin attending this conference! #leadupchat@SolutionTree#atplc
So true! I get frustrated with that as well. We always seem to be preparing them for something in their future rather than focusing on the here and now. #leadupchat

A5: Reconvene your core group of Ts who began the journey with you. Self-assess and reflect. Be willing to adjust, as needed. Also, embrace learning from “failure.” Set up a culture of productive struggle and risk-taking for students and you can’t go wrong. #leadupchat
You all raise such an important set of points. We all need to self reflect on this question from time to time: As an educator, what’s dictating my efforts, my behavior, my priorities? That’s a powerful question! #leadupchat

A good strategy for 'sharing and inviting' can be during a required faculty meeting: email the information Ts need and have the meeting be a demonstration of a strategy they've tried. #leadupchat

We've slumbered too long under the winter of compliance-driven education. It's SPRING time...
Let's all #GETWOKE.

Start with:
What you have NOTICED about the strengths, interests, and curiosities of the students AND their teachers?
Empathy is Innovation Fuel.

A6) I went to a "non" education conference recently for business leaders/market influencers and it was amazing to be out of the edbubble for different insights. So my challenge to you is to attend & encourage others to marinate in ideas found in outside conferences. #LeadUpChat
A6: I learned about @flipgrid at a recent #edcamp. Will be using it in an upcoming Professional Learning session with Principals. Asked them to read an article before coming to the session & will then use @flipgrid to share their key takeaways from the article. #leadupchat
Thank you so much for joining us this morning at #LeadUpChat. Thank you also to @tsschmidty for being an amazing co-host as always. We are better because of thought leaders like you. We will see you back in two weeks in observance of Easter Weekend for many!
A6: We just started our #WCHackersClub in the #WildcatCorridor to build our “Hack Mentality” vertically with teachers across our system. We have 18 WORLD CHANGING teachers learning, Laughing and making the world better for Ss! We meet every 2 weeks. #LeadUpchat
