The first Twitter edchat in the Philippines, helping teachers grow their PLN, use tech in the classroom and promoting a culture of teachers helping teachers.
Hello everyone! I missed you #edchatPH. I’m Alfonso from the Philippines and my favorite subject is History. Shout out to Mr. Peter Patrick Garcia of LSM for making it really interesting 13 years ago!
Hi, #edchatph friends! I'm joining from Tokyo. Tough pick, but my favorite was Mrs. Kenney in AP Calculus (and I'm a literature lover!). It was because of HER! 💗🌟 It's all about relationships.
Missed the prompt for favorite teacher... Definitely Spanish teacher and amazing woman, Dalrene Hagin! @RutgersPrep has a tradition of hiring fine folks like her! #edchatph
She was amazing! I had her for both pre-calc and calc. Reading and writing are my passions...but she made her class my favorite because of her passion for the subject AND her care for all of us. She was a great example of a teacher. #edchatph
I like today’s #edchatph topic. I’ll also be doing the IBDP’s Creativity, Activity and Service course and I’m currently on training right now for it. Right now I’m learning how important it is for you to know your students.
Favorite teacher is History teacher Mr. Reed. He was always so passionate about history and made it come alive for me. He's still teaching too! #edchatph
Great to be back with such a supportive group! The job swings back and forth from incredibly rewarding to incredibly challenging fast enough to make your head spin! #edchatph
A1 maybe when I was in a big traditional school with 40-45 students in a class. Now, I need to know what their needs and goals are. Having a small class size gives me that opportunity to really think about them and their needs. There’s no excuse actually #edchatph
A1 - Sure, you can teach it. But it won’t be truly effective. Knowing your students is the initial step in building relationships, knowing their strengths, building rapport and 100 other things. #edchatPH
A1b - Knowing students starts on the 1st day and doesn’t end until they leave your class. And even then it’s possible to continue a strong relationship. #edchatPH
#edchatPH Heulwen in Melbourne. Highschool was not the best but Mrs Freud used to mix and make new recipes of learning. It's inspired my learning and teaching
A1: Strong disagree. Relationships are the bedrock of teaching. Students learn better from teachers who know them and this is also where differentiation can come into play. #edchatph
That's why it is tough to teach well and really guide the students with big class sizes. I feel for our public school teachers in our country who handle a class of 60-70 students. :-( #edchatPH
I know all my Ss need to feel unconditionally loved, safe, and excited to grow. All 150 understand I can't know all the details of their lives the first week of school. We grow together as we learn together. #edchatph
A1: Knowing Ss is essential. Are Ss disengaged? Are they off-task or misbehaving? Are they itching to leave? Are they reluctant to share their thinking? For all of the above: work to form stronger relationships. It's all about relationships. https://t.co/7Bv59Wtn8z#edchatph
A1 in today’s classroom it’s really important to establish your relationship with your student. It makes teaching better and there is trust between you and the students. Plus it reduces the biases and judgments if you know who they are #edchatph
A1 in our school, we would have pre-class meetings. We’d meet the precious advisers and their respective learning support shadow teachers, and even parents to tak about their child’s needs and goals. Tiring but it starts the year right #edchatph

Yes, first impressions matter...by getting to know students we can build up trust and then if something goes astray (which it will!) it doesn't completely ruin the relationship. #edchatph
I call that lecturing, not teaching. One can lecture all day long, & some information may be retained by some. But that is not teaching. True teaching is about empowering others w/ lifelong skills to think, communicate, collaborate, self-manage—so much more than content.#edchatph
Sometimes we come in thinking we’ll be that teacher in the movie. But it’s the little thing that counts. That crazy adult who’ll listen to them and be there when they are needed. #edchatPH
For the amount of money universities charge - they are really resting on their laurels here! I enjoy @aceedu for this reason. More engagement online, like this! #edchatph

Yes! Judgment affects students on so many levels and adds pressure to them. Thereby making school not an environment of safety and learning but of meeting expectations and norms. #edchatPH
A2: A burning question that answers the "why" behind the inquiry that we are doing! Believe me, students will be asking why they are learning what they are learning, and it helps to have it clear and at the forefront of the learning. #edchatph
A2: You need to gather the meaningful details—beyond info on a page. And this comes from having true conversations and dialogue with them. Build dialogue, and you build trust. And trust opens the door to building true relationships. #edchatph
A2 before the year starts we also send our this back to school packet where students do short activities and also introduce themselves to us. I’m thinking of making mine more techy next year. Looking at you @Flipgrid#edchatph
I agree. Based on this definition of teaching, I believe quite a number of schools would receive a poor grade for empowering. To be empowered, Ss actually have to have a voice. #edchatPH

#edchatPH a2 Weeds are flowers too. Yr ss have their ways of being in the spotlight and of celebrating success.
Knowing ss meant that I know a prize could be taking off shoes in class.
#languagelearning means knowing how they can engage better.
A2: I need to know who they are as people. Focus on the person-his or her needs. Are they anxious, perfectionist, nervous, shy, upbeat, etc. This helps me know how to work with each Ss. #edchatPH
A2 conferences are a great way to know students. While they’re doing their independent task, ask a student or two to come sit with you and have a chat about their work. #edchatph

A3: I know this sounds trite, but talk to them. Carve out some time to talk to each student individually. It doesn't have to be about school. This is not a waste of time. I can actually think of very little that is a better use of your time at the beginning of the year! #edchatph
A2: I try to get to know my Ss outside of my class. How do they interact with others? Found Ss that appeared to be doing well inside the classroom, but then you see something else outside. #edchatPH
A3 because advisors are inside the classroom all of the time, students are free to approach their teacher anytime. This leads to spontaneous conversations that aren’t necessarily academic. #edchatph
A3 They come up with a portfolio or a collage of things they like, or bring out something from their bag and talk about them. And let them talk, talk, talk, while I take notes. #edchatPH
A3: I have my Ss do a About Me assignment using @Flipgrid at home. I’ve seen my Ss’ pets, room, siblings. I talk to my kids in the halls. Joke with them during breaks. Go to concerts to see them perform. #edchatPH
It was seeing @danfeigelson doing his conferences that really sparked my interest in sitting down with students and going through the writing process...and more. #edchatPH

A3: I like to call parents and guardians and talk to them before school starts about their child's strengths, weaknesses, and their goal for their child...this helps me learn a lot not just about the kid but about the family and dynamics.🙂
a3 I am working on spending less time talking and getting them to think more in their groups. It's really not about me at all. It's about building their confidence. #edchatPH
A3: Use the workshop model (in any subject!). This opens up time for you to confer with both individuals and small groups. True conversations build trust, community, and allow you to truly know your students as PEOPLE. #kidsarepeopletoohttps://t.co/sWLRNXxMiw#edchatph
A3 since I’m in the high school now, we’re assigned mentees to coach and mentor throughout the year. I’ve used google classroom to set up meetings with them, have them do some reflections, and write down their goals and whether it’s been met or not. #edchatph
We did exit interviews at @chascollegiate that were extremely powerful for both Ss and Ts at the conclusion of major projects. Great way to celebrate process over product #edchatph

#edchatPH a3 Getting to know you bingo is an oldy but a goody game to get to know ss and bond them. Particularly with year 7 in that awkward year of moving into highschool
A3 exit ticket strategies (3 stars and a wish or headlines) help you know where students are at and how you can direct the lesson in the future #edchatph
I asked my HS students parents to email me something about their child and their responses were really insightful. When the parents & Ss know we are treating them as individuals, they know we care #edchatPH

When I’ve always done is find Ss to mentor. They were often just kids I met in the hall. No one asked me to do this. I just took the initiative. Think if others did the same what the student body would be like. Probably happier. #edchatPH

A3 follow students on their social media accounts especially twitter; they usually express their feelings using it. From there, talk to them individually if you see that they are facing adversities.
They will feel loved when you ask them individually.

Thanks for the good words, you are right...we forget about conferencing at the secondary level, it's too powerful to not use! (and enjoyable too!) #edchatph
Exactly! 🙌 It's about much more than content. We are empowering Ss to think for themselves—for life! And we are forming relationships w/ them in order to help them form relationships w/ others...to have a respect for life & to go through life knowing that people matter.#edchatph
