The #2PencilChat is a weekly conversation about educational technology. As we enter a more student-centered age, let's talk about using all the tools in our toolboxes to be innovative and dynamic teachers.
Welcome to the #2PencilChat! Tonight is about one big question: could we write a book together? So let's figure it out! First, introduce yourself, and tell us your favorite education book (and why!).
Good evening, #2PencilChat Friends! Sean in St. Augustine, teacher, your pal at Buncee, and I'm gonna cheat - marketing books by @ThisIsSethsBlog have done a lot for my thinking on teaching.
Hola - Allison from Arizona @ArizonaVirtualA. This year @burgessdave Teach Like a Pirate #tlap was essential in getting me back to focusing on finding joy over data crunching (as well as finding joy IN data crunching). #2pencilchat
Hey, hey #2PencilChat! Michelle. Media Specialist from Daytona Beach here. Fav ed book is The Innovator's Mindset by @gcouros followed by Kids Deserve It by @TechNinjaTodd & @awelcome. Both encourage going the extra mile for our kids.
Jennifer from FL. MS Social Studies & ELA. Just got back from #fetc with all sorts of ideas! I think any book based on a true story is my fav. Life IS the lesson, ya know? #2PencilChat
Hey Michelle! I knew GC was gonna pop up. I loved that book. I need to check out Kids Deserve It. Everyone I know who's read it has loved it. #2PencilChat

Thanks... on antibiotics, so I'm hopeful.
Shift This makes changing up your classroom feel "feasible." DR makes you realize all the ways we have beaten the fun out of reading and how we can try to get it back #2PencilChat

Check out the NYS Lifelong Practices of REaders and Writers. It is in the introduction to the new ELA standards. I was on this committee so I'm excited that it holds what we all feel are essentials. #2PencilChat

I don't see why not. I'm feeling like culture and relationships could be a thread woven through the book, and greetings and happy times are a big part of that!

A3 That I get to feel like I'm right their with them on their journey, learning from their successes & admitted failures. They keep you wanting to hear more of their story. The best edu authors put themselves out there to make meaningful connections beyond the book. #2PencilChat
A3: Well. I love that @burgessdave clearly takes education seriously but doesn't take himself seriously. We're role models, but we're human and silly and fun, too. And we stumble. And learn. #2pencilchat
A3 I think storytelling is most important...strategies next. I may not remember the strategy, but I'll remember the story and it becomes part of who I am. #2PencilChat
Friends, I must go. An emergency has arisen. A mouse got into the homemade marshmallows I gave a friend. These are dark times, and she needs...more mallows. Farewell, and happy teaching! #2pencilchat
YES. And putting themselves out there means that they share the ups and the downs! You can't follow the map when there are only the highs.

A3. Working my way through The Power of Moments by Chip and Dan Heath. They grab you from the beginning with their story of the Signing Ceremony. Beautiful stuff! #2PencilChat#powerofmoments
A3 they refocus me and refresh ideas that sometimes get forgotten in the day to day huddle. “P is for pirate”, is a book that sits on the shelf at the front of my classroom. I like to read a couple pages each day to keep myself inspired #teachlikeapirate#2PencilChat
A4: We value each other's opinions and not argue if we are writing a book together. If we are writing a book by ourselves we need perseverance. #2pencilchat
A4 I think one pitfall would be different writing styles. But I have read 3 books that were coauthored they identified who was speaking, it was very helpful #Empower#LeadLAP#ditchbook#2PencilChat
A4 One pitfall could be one person dominating and swaying group in one direction. Better to be like a trampoline where each spring pulls its own weight & then let the ideas bounce. #2PencilChat
Yes - I think if it were broken up so people chose their strengths and contributed essays, rather than having everyone work on the same pieces, it'd definitely be better.

Q5
First off, who's in? Does anyone want to join in on a #2PencilChat book about education with the topics and themes we've discussed tonight?
If not, who's up for writing their own book? Let's fill the shelves with great teaching practice!
So what I'm thinking is that we can put together an outline with a solid thru line of #2PencilChat topics, and have people share essays on each topic. Then we can hone those with framing text, and really portray the heart and soul of this chat as a book! #2PencilChat
A5 Count me in for a chapter! This crew would put together some story. Doing a TED Talk in March called around the theme of Teach Like Gord (Downie). I'd write on this and some global collaboration experiences from virtual worlds to real world exchanges. #2PencilChat

Awesome, thank you, Michael! And although my collection is limited to their early stuff, I dig the Tragically Hip. I admired how he went out, if we could all have such heart! #2PencilChat
Why not try your hand at it. Winter looks different all over the world. Trying to showcase the beauty of nature, the power of voice, and the universality of #poetry. #2PencilChat

I’ve realized I’m in WAY over my head with this chat. BUT, you’re all amazing so I’ll hang around. Winter poem:
Palm trees swaying,
“Look I see the reef is breaking,
Grab your board”
Aaaaahhhh, winter in Hawai‘i

I love you SO MUCH, #2PencilChat Pals! Thank you so much for being part of my education family. This group blows my mind each week! Special thanks to @abookforfrances and @nathan_stevens for hosting in the past couple of weeks!
No worries, Kathleen! Normally, we're more loose topic-wise, I just have so much love for this group of people that I decided I wanted to do a book with them. I'm glad you're here, even so. Mahalo!
