A2: Differentiation should be part of the process rather than an add-on later #gcisdchat
  • GESRedmon Nov 16 @ 9:41 PM EST
  • PattonASPIRE3 Nov 16 @ 9:41 PM EST
A2: The more purposeful we are in lesson design (already planning based on specific learners) the more likely we will differentiate. #gcisdchat
  • NCookGHS Nov 16 @ 9:42 PM EST
A2 bc my sts needs are all so different I have to differentiate during all my lesson planning #gcisdchat
  • CKenderAVID Nov 16 @ 9:42 PM EST
A2: No lesson design means no differentiation. Choice? Maybe. Different? Maybe. But true differentiation requires great lesson design! #gcisdchat
  • MrsShepGMS Nov 16 @ 9:42 PM EST
A2: I feel like it has to happen while lesson planning--its becoming a natural part of planning--almost like a habit #gcisdchat
  • BESChapman1 Nov 16 @ 9:42 PM EST
A2: I try to think about learning outcomes of the lesson and decide needs of Ss then plan from there! #gcisdchat
  • CHHSLiaison Nov 16 @ 9:42 PM EST
A2 as you move through the design process you intentionally differentiate each part you can #gcisdchat
  • CMS_Thompson Nov 16 @ 9:42 PM EST
A2: When designing a lesson with the end in mind you can determine where the students are and differentiate to meet their needs. #gcisdchat
  • CMSVisser Nov 16 @ 9:43 PM EST
A2: By letting my Ss take the lead designing lessons, THEY created the differentiation and took ownership in their learning. #WinWin #gcisdchat
  • MrsShepGMS Nov 16 @ 9:43 PM EST
Yes--every kid has a different road map to successful content master. Their map is our differentiation #gcisdchat

  • PattonASPIRE3 Nov 16 @ 9:45 PM EST
A3: Data is key to purposeful differentiation. Without it, we are taking a shot in the dark. However, data doesn't have to be a test. There are effective informal assessments as well. #gcisdchat
  • CMS_Thompson Nov 16 @ 9:45 PM EST
If you don’t know where you’re going how do you plan on getting there? Right?! #gcisdchat
    In reply to @travisniemeyer
  • CHHSLiaison Nov 16 @ 9:45 PM EST
A3 when I give a formative assessment I try to think through and plan for at least 3 different flexible groups to start with the next day #gcisdchat
  • NCookGHS Nov 16 @ 9:45 PM EST
A3 data shows where Ss are and then you are able to plan for where they need to go next and what challenges you need to plan for #gcisdchat

    A:1 how I️ feel when I successfully differentiate a lesson #gcisdchat
  • GESRedmon Nov 16 @ 9:45 PM EST
A2: Lesson design has a huge impact on how we differentiate and in ensuring that we are providing differentiation. We can't always fly by the seat of our pants! It has to be intentional. #gcisdchat

  • monzgonz Nov 16 @ 9:46 PM EST
A2: You have to see the big picture of the lesson/unit, & then figure out how to tap into all the different Ss needs #gcisdchat
  • kris_lilley Nov 16 @ 9:46 PM EST
Benchmarks really make the individual needs of Ss easy to identify. #gcisdchat
    In reply to @BESChapman1
  • CMSVisser Nov 16 @ 9:47 PM EST
A3: Also use data from Student Voice surveys and reflections I give to assess my teaching and make changes to better differentiate. Asking for suggestions provides great insight to their styles. #gcisdchat
  • travisniemeyer Nov 16 @ 9:47 PM EST

  • mrscairnsBES Nov 16 @ 9:49 PM EST
I think it goes along with previous comment: how can you plan to get somewhere if you don't know where you're going. Using data to differentiate just drives the planning. #gcisdchat
  • GESRedmon Nov 16 @ 9:49 PM EST
A3: Use data to form groups, determine level of text, work or difficulty. I use it to determine activities, structures and products. #gcisdchat

Good evening & welcome to tonight's #gcisdchat! For the next hour, we'll be talking about ideas and strategies to sharpen and add to the tools in your differentiation toolbox.
  • GESRedmon Nov 16 @ 9:51 PM EST
A4: There is no questioning to use it or not, it just becomes a natural part of what you do. #gcisdchat
  • PattonASPIRE3 Nov 16 @ 9:51 PM EST
A4: Differentiation requires a philosophy shift from traditional teaching. Teachers cannot assume one student's roadmap is the same as anothers (Tomlinson, @cat3y). #gcisdchat
  • NCookGHS Nov 16 @ 9:52 PM EST
A4 it is making differentiation a given, knowing that each S is an individual and so a one-size-fits-all approach is not an option #gcisdchat
  • MrsShepGMS Nov 16 @ 9:52 PM EST
When it comes down to it, differentiation simply is about what's best for the kids. It's the WHY behind the HOW. Closing their opportunity gap by meeting specific needs. #gcisdchat
  • mrscairnsBES Nov 16 @ 9:52 PM EST
I view it more as a process or practice rather than a mindset or strategy. #gcisdchat
  • monzgonz Nov 16 @ 9:52 PM EST
A4: Needs to be habit that occurs everyday to best meet our Ss needs for them to be successful in their learning journey & our journey as educators! #gcisdchat
  • travisniemeyer Nov 16 @ 9:53 PM EST
Q4: Strategies applied situationally. Daily differentiation shows you care about meeting the needs of the individual student #gcisdchat
  • CMS_Thompson Nov 16 @ 9:53 PM EST
A4: Differentiation can mean so many different things, and it can look different on any given day. It’s not simply a tool used for a quick fix, but rather something that we develop based on student needs. #gcisdchat
  • GESMitchell Nov 16 @ 9:53 PM EST
A3: Data can be simply collected from listening. I️ love to do things like “talk a mile a minute” and listen to them explain terms to a partner #gcisdchat
  • CKenderAVID Nov 16 @ 9:53 PM EST
A4: Differentiation becomes easier when there is strong teacher-student relationships. Having the mindset of caring who each student is as a person will naturally carry over into knowing what they need! #gcisdchat
  • GESStackfleth Nov 16 @ 9:53 PM EST
A4: A strategy is how you go about it and a mindset is why you go about it #gcisdchat
  • PattonASPIRE3 Nov 16 @ 9:53 PM EST
It depends on the situation, but checklists and observations are one of my go to's... must not underestimate the power of teacher observation! #gcisdchat
    In reply to @JessicaHHeaton
  • CMSVisser Nov 16 @ 9:53 PM EST
Absolutely true, Colleen! Since taking part in StrengthsFinder, I've learned that MANY of my Ss have this as a strength! #gcisdchat #cmsstrengths

  • RialGraham Nov 16 @ 9:54 PM EST
A:4. Differentiation is a mindset and should be second nature, embedded in our thought process for lesson planning, its facilitation and assessment. #gcisdchat
  • CMSVisser Nov 16 @ 9:55 PM EST
A4: As the guru, Carol Tomlinson, says, "Differentiation is NOT a set of strategies. It's a way of thinking about teaching and learning." :) #gcisdchat
  • BESChapman1 Nov 16 @ 9:56 PM EST
A4: Differentiation is about meeting Ss where they are and how to help them grow. It is not something that you do as an afterthought. #gcisdchat
  • PattonASPIRE3 Nov 16 @ 9:56 PM EST
Great point, relationships are key to all aspects of a successful classroom! #gcisdchat
    In reply to @CKenderAVID
  • kris_lilley Nov 16 @ 9:57 PM EST
Q5: How do you use these characteristics to differentiate for your content? #gcisdchat
  • CMSVisser Nov 16 @ 9:57 PM EST
A4: She also says, "Strategies are just tools to accomplish the goals of differentiation." I really feel this is true! Strategies help, but it is our mindset & approach that really make the difference. #gcisdchat
  • osunewell Nov 16 @ 9:58 PM EST

  • amyleitner06 Nov 16 @ 9:58 PM EST

  • CMSVisser Nov 16 @ 9:59 PM EST
YES! That is an even better way of saying it. I love this, @osunewell - it is soooo a philosophy! #gcisdchat

Differentiation is designing the space, groupings, and engaging work to meet students' unique learning needs and strategies are a tool used to accomplish the learning objectives. #gcisdchat
  • RialGraham Nov 16 @ 10:01 PM EST
A:5. We take into consideration a child's learning preferences and levels of mastery when designing based on different factors. #gcisdchat

A4: Differentiation is designing the space, groupings, and engaging work to meet students' unique learning needs and strategies are a tool used to accomplish the learning objectives. #gcisdchat #gcisdchat
  • CKenderAVID Nov 16 @ 10:01 PM EST
A5: Differentiation of content absolutely requires us to be culturally relevant educators. Imagine spending your life in a class reading books that never include a person who looks like you? #gcisdchat
  • JenniferMcTx Nov 16 @ 10:01 PM EST
A4 In the special ed setting differentiation is a must. All Ss have the potential to learn, we just have to reach them where they are at. #gcisdchat
  • NCookGHS Nov 16 @ 10:01 PM EST
A5 for me materials is the biggest part of my differentiation. I have Ss who need concrete objects, those who can't participate without the right communication tools, etc. Regardless of what I am teaching, I can't teach without different ways for the Ss to access it #gcisdchat
  • kris_lilley Nov 16 @ 10:02 PM EST
When each student can have that take away of success - it can change mindset and bias. #gcisdchat

A5: For GT learners, broad-based content, multidisciplinary connections, and integrating generalizations and themes are very effective. #gcisdchat
  • osunewell Nov 16 @ 10:02 PM EST
A3 Data drives the differentiation bus. All types (formal/informal/summative/formative/anecdotal/etc) should be used to guide decisions about lesson design and planning. Saying you differentiate without basing planning on data is like saying you drive w/out gas. #gcisdchat
  • CMS_Thompson Nov 16 @ 10:03 PM EST
A5: I believe concepts and materials are used most in my differentiation. Students have so many ways of learning - many need manipulative and/or analogies that can bridge gaps in understanding. #gcisdchat
  • kris_lilley Nov 16 @ 10:03 PM EST
Reaching that growth and finding successes to celebrate! All Ss love that feeling. #gcisdchat

    Absolutely! #gcisdchat

Q6: How do you ensure your learners understand content through process? #gcisdchat
  • monzgonz Nov 16 @ 10:05 PM EST
Implement it using it everyday so that it organically becomes part of learning process; getting to REALLY know our Ss- question them about what does & doesn't work for them #gcisdchat
    In reply to @JessicaHHeaton
  • MrsShepGMS Nov 16 @ 10:06 PM EST
A6: Constant feedback--but it only works if the relationship is there and they feel confident you're going to receive the feedback #gcisdchat
  • CMSVisser Nov 16 @ 10:06 PM EST
It is amazing to me what one class period is successful with that another absolutely cannot use. This is why I say yes, I teach PAP Eng 5 times, but not one time is the same! #gcisdchat

Right?? Sometimes I'm creating totally different plans for the same level and content. Different kids, different learning. Not to mention a 1st period class has different needs than an 8th period class. #gcisdchat

It is amazing to me what one class period is successful with that another absolutely cannot use. This is why I say yes, I teach PAP Eng 5 times, but not one time is the same! #gcisdchat
      • amyleitner06 Nov 16 @ 9:58 PM EST
I totally agree! It is based on what is best for ALL students, instead of thinking it is a tool that may or may not be needed for certain groups of students. #gcisdchat

A4: Differentiation can mean so many different things, and it can look different on any given day. It’s not simply a tool used for a quick fix, but rather something that we develop based on student needs. #gcisdchat
  • CMSVisser Nov 16 @ 10:09 PM EST
Not sure where I read this (think it was ASCD), but it was explained that differentiated instruction is a lens for choosing the best tool for successful learning experiences. #gcisdchat
  • PattonASPIRE3 Nov 16 @ 10:09 PM EST
A6: So often Ts design for what works for us. We have to ask our Ss how they learn best and give them opportunities to experience different ways. Differentiating for process takes planning! #gcisdchat
  • JenniferMcTx Nov 16 @ 10:10 PM EST
A6: Trelawny, I agree. It takes relationships to build that accountability. #gcisdchat
  • CMSVisser Nov 16 @ 10:11 PM EST
YES! So.. I did this just yesterday and had 2 boys create the rubric Ss would use for their self & peer evaluations and they were AMAZING! #gcisdchat

A6: Diversified assessments. A range of student-generated products. Questioning. Rubrics. #gcisdchat

  • CKenderAVID Nov 16 @ 10:12 PM EST
A6: This is where informal assessments come in. Ex. Exit tickets that are used to drive class the next day. The process is only as strong as the lesson design. It is our job to be equipped with all the best strategies so we can change things up when needed! #gcisdchat
  • CMSVisser Nov 16 @ 10:12 PM EST
By taking ownership in their learning and having the understanding that what they are doing is meaningful and relevant. They will want to push themselves. #gcisdchat
  • kris_lilley Nov 16 @ 10:13 PM EST
Q7: In what ways do your students demonstrate an understanding of your content through product? #gcisdchat
  • CMS_Thompson Nov 16 @ 10:13 PM EST
A6: I offer two types of practice every day (one traditional and one online where students can utilize step-by-step instructions and/or videos if they are still unsure of the process.) I’ve received great feedback on this from Ss and parents! #gcisdchat
  • JenniferMcTx Nov 16 @ 10:14 PM EST
A6: everyday is different and the Ss may need something different than they used the day before to help them. Showing them strategies and giving them tools that they can choose from makes them more successful. #gcisdchat
  • travisniemeyer Nov 16 @ 10:14 PM EST
Is there a way for Ss to differentiate their own work? #gcisdchat
  • MrsShepGMS Nov 16 @ 10:14 PM EST
By looking at the end goal and unpacking it. Showing the students, here's what you need to know, and asking them how we should get there #gcisdchat

A7: Videos, pictures, presentations, product creations, debates, writing! The opportunities are endless! #gcisdchat
  • CMSVisser Nov 16 @ 10:15 PM EST
A7: With all the tools we have out there I find product differentiation easier than the others. It is led by Student Voice & we are fortunate we have the tools & support to have these opportunities. #gcisdchat
  • CMS_Thompson Nov 16 @ 10:15 PM EST
A7: formative assessments (with re-tests for all who want to improve), quick checks (with reflections), small group collaborative work and student conferencing are all ways my students can demonstrate understanding of content. #gcisdchat
  • amyleitner06 Nov 16 @ 10:15 PM EST

Just heard about Incredibox (to create raps) and thought I’d try to implement that as an option in my math class. I can’t wait to hear about ratios and rates in rap form! LOL #gcisdchat

  • GESRedmon Nov 16 @ 10:19 PM EST
A7: I like to always provide a choice in product. I use choice boards with varying challenge levels and product creation in math and reading. PBLs also naturally are geared toward product differentiation. #gcisdchat
