A1: When you actually ask someone to be involved and take a leadership role. When staff know they are valued they will do more to build the capacity of the building. #masterychat

Building capacity in others to be their best is missional! Hope you are ready to roll w/ your team this year!
I'm pretty passionate about building capacity in others because when the leader grows and others grow, kids win! #MasteryChat
Can't wait to hear everyone's great thinking.
A1: A leader who sees the value in giving their people room to grow. Someone who is their as a support and a guide, refusing to micromanage. A leader shows PRIDE! #MasteryChat
A1- Believing in your staff and building a positive relationship. Most of the time teachers do not realize they are doing awesome things in their classroom because thats their normal. We need to remind them that they really do have something to share with others!
#masterychat
A1 - Capacity is about support and proper resource allocation. Capacity is created when potential is met with support and provision of resources, training and support. #masterychat
Happy New Year #MasteryChat family!!!
Giving a shout out to all of you who show up week after week to work with the rest of us in this very talented #PLN

A1: When you actually ask someone to be involved and take a leadership role. When staff know they are valued they will do more to build the capacity of the building. #masterychat
A1: To build capacity you have to build relationships w/ stakeholders. Make school a welcoming place where people and ideas are honored. Love your tribe! Model risk taking! Walk your talk! #MasteryChat
A1) Leaders ask great Qs on the road to building capacity in others.
Rather than asking, "how we get the best out of people?, we should ask, "how do we create environments for people to be the best version of themselves & thrive?" #MasteryChat
A1. What I’ve learned through instructional coaching is that the best way to build capacity is to propose, not impose. What is imposed will be opposed. #MasteryChat
A1: Find a person that has a 6/10 capacity and give them a 7 task. Your mere belief in them will often bridge the gap between ability and performance. By the time they have finished, they’ll actually be a 7. Repeat. #MasteryChat
A1. I always begin with keeping my emotions in check and listening. It’s all in focus: no phone, no typing, no phone calls. I ask probing questions but ones that highlight how ideas mesh with vision. I do not say no. I build T trust by listening.#MasteryChat
A1 Leadership qualities that lead to building capacity are providing an environment that encourages risk taking & supporting staff to take that journey into personalized learning to do things differently for Ss, it’s about providing opportunities for the Ts to lead #MasteryChat
A1: See the good. We must be intentional in seeking out the talents and strengths of those around us. Then, we must intentionally amplify the good that we see. #MasteryChat
A1: Scaffolding for increasing responsibility. It works for teachers just like it does for students. Slowly build confidence, and proficiency.
#masterychat
A1 Trusting and valuing the people that are working with you. Communicating in a respectful and fair way. Allowing those people you work with professional freedom rather than constraining talent.
Q1: Offering a variety of options for professional learning that is connected to both district vision and personal interest of the staff. Providing opportunities for staff to get into one another’s classrooms. Offering leadership opportunities that build on strengths #MasteryChat
A1: Effective leaders don’t just exert authority; they inspire, persuade, & encourage. They point staff toward a common goal & and draw out a commitment to achieve results through bldg of trust & showing respect. #MasteryChat
A1: I think a major component is developing a culture where risk-taking is encouraged, not punished. Thankful that @ERobbPrincipal and @KTuttleEDU have worked to create that culture at @JWMSGoCougars! #masterychat
A1: Building strong relationships from the start. Takes intentionality, time, authenticity, and a heart for those you serve! Truly makes all the difference. #masterychat#MLmagical
Chris from NW Indiana assistant principal for grades 6-12!
A1. Establishing norms while building and growing an enjoyable, professional work culture!
#masterychat
A1:
You build capacity through servant leadership.
You honor agency.
You listen.
You stay true to your values.
You seek to empower—not to control.
#masterychat
A1 seeking ideas, asking questions, encouraging risk taking, saying yes, engaging teams around the table, not making mistakes a life sentence, modeling vulnerability #MasteryChat
A1: Building capacity starts with belief in interdependence. It relies on vulnerability. It succeeds with empowerment. It relishes in relationships. #masterychat
Check out my Blog about Servant leadership https://t.co/BkGAhRn8v9#Masterychat - removing barriers to teaching rather than building more walls to climb over.
A1: I believe the creation of clarity, solid communications and "if this, then that" structures provide the framework for distributed leadership. How do you distribute control when you don’t actually have it yet? #MasteryChat
A1: Find what makes people shine, let folks play & open explore, allow people to grapple/grow as they try new things, recognize in meaningful ways .
#masterychat
A1: I believe a good leader models the qualities & skills they want to see in their staff. They are a cheerleader & are continuous learners, not just regarding leadership, but also regarding the instructional strategies used in the classroom. #MasteryChat
A1. Common purpose, concrete goals, communicate freely, combine the best of each person, create open mindedly, circulate accountability and compete externally - Seven C's to Success! https://t.co/SwtEW7Wf4E#masterychat
A1: Coaching the person. Actively participating with staff, failing & getting right back up and on track. Being empathetic, yet having high standards and expectations (push & support). #MasteryChat
Happy New Year #MasteryChat
Teresa Engler Dynamic Learning Project Tech coach from PA
I am giving a shout out to all of you who continually participate in Twitter chats like this one I learn so much from all of you week after week!
A1: help others see their potential. It’s hard when ppl are stuck in the weeds. Help them cut out the weeds that take up their time so they can work at their capacity. #masterychat
A1: Good leaders build capacity by clearly communicating their intentions and also by learning and building upon the strengths of their team members. #MasteryChat
A1)I have been rereading Contrarian’s Guide to leadership, and one thing Dr. Sample stresses is empowering your lieutenants to make decisions. He emphasizes giving them credit when things work out, but taking ownership when they don’t. #MasteryChat
A1b)I have not been a principal yet, but I imagine that the urge to control everything is overwhelming. But, we have to trust those we empower to make the best decisions. And if they make a mistake, it is up to us to help see their error so they learn for next time. #masterychat
Shared ownership is an area that is often confusing for us in education. We often talk about PLCs but lead/manage in silos still. We can do better and are in many areas. #MasteryChat
A1 Listening! Hearing, empathizing, feeling the struggles of the individuals on the forefront of teaching and learning is the first step towards real change making in education. Without that, the rest will simply not work.
#masterychat
A1
1. Providing opportunity for teachers
2. Acknowledging leadership of others
3. Knowing what is going on in the building
4. Being in the classrooms to witness the learning
5. Sharing the collective knowledge of teachers
#masterychat
A1:
You build capacity through servant leadership.
You honor agency.
You listen.
You stay true to your values.
You seek to empower—not to control.
#masterychat
A1: open door policy. Showing you care about your staff. Checking in on them. Transparency. Realize there’s more to life job. Saying yes. providing resources to make dreams happen. Letting staff members dress up as pink t-rex for opening day or whatev makes tt tic #MasteryChat
Hello, I'm Angie and I teach 4th grade!! A1 A strong leader sees strengths and builds on it, sees where growth is needed and offers support, asks questions, offers or works towards solutions, and is present. #masterychat
1) when the leader shows vulnerability and a need and desire to grow, others will follow. When the leader has “all of the answers” the followers will too. #MasteryChat#boldhumility
A1- Being supported, and valued plus an atmosphere where it’s okay to make mistakes. Plus a surprise drawing and Sonic drink are always a plus! Thanks @RuckerMelanie#masterychat
A1: Leadership actions that contribute to building capacity are empathy, kindness, availability, trust, feedback that promotes growth and partnership. #MasteryChat
A1: Start by building strong relationships and trust with the stakeholders. Recognize their strengths and provide them opportunity to step out of their comfort zone. Empower your teachers! #masterychat
A1) Leadership actions that build capacity is leading by example. Model what you expect those under you to do and be a support system for encouraging others to take risks #masterychat
It's only shared ownership if teachers are part of the decision making process, can take the lead & provide opportunity to share their expertise & knowledge #MasteryChat
Gosh, we need to catch up. Maybe even a quick phone call some time. Ill be driving a bit tomorrow if you want to catch up. Either way - want to hear about life :) #masterychat

A1: Teamwork. We cannot be successful in our line of work without working with others to get the job done. Things run smoothly. Everyone will agree to disagree but a collaborative effort is needed. #MasteryChat
A1 I think providing staff with a district roadmap of where we are going together and a timeline of the major events helps get everyone on board. #MasteryChat
We are all learners- especially our leaders! A leader who is truly open to learning and growing themselves will see that capacity build within their professional family. #MasteryChat
A1: I believe a good leader models the qualities & skills they want to see in their staff. They are a cheerleader & are continuous learners, not just regarding leadership, but also regarding the instructional strategies used in the classroom. #MasteryChat
we can NOT underestimate the power of a positive environment. As one of my former amazing principals passed onto me, "we work too hard to not have fun!" We can create the environments and the reality we want to see. #MasteryChat
I love being encouraged to to take creative risks with my teaching practices. It is not enough to be allowed to take these risks, leaders must encourage it! #masterychat
A1: Hey #MasteryChat, Melissa from NM! The best leaders I have worked for & with trust their Ts, are flexible in their thinking of how Ts approach/present instruction, & promote their Ts in being authentic, organic & real - they know Ts are people w/school lives & personal ones!
A2 - LISTEN...give the opportunity via either surveys, in person meetings, or dialogue for them to be heard. When staff feel heard they feel valued. #masterychat
A1 Being Open & honest, having a mindset of yes, believing in employers, communicating, & listening support an active leadership to build capacity. #masterychat
A1: Hi! Cindy from VA checking in. Solid communication, listening, and follow-through helps build trust. Trust is essential to help build capacity. People will venture out into the unknown if there is trust. #MasteryChat
A1: yes- adding to listening for areas teachers need to be filled, validated, or developed. Does he/she need efficacy, craftsmanship, interdependence, flexibility, awareness? (credit ThinkingCollaborative). #masterychat#educoach
A2: I provide lots of encouragement and opportunities to voice their thoughts. I try having them share in small groups if necessary before sharing with the large group. It can be intimidating. #MasteryChat
A2: Create the environment of trust...
1. What you say stays here
2. I'm an all-in, phone-down listener
3. Your voice matters, so say what you're really thinking
#masterychat
A2: Helping peers to have voice starts with supportive confidence. Being a sounding board for them to work out what they are thinking and what they want to present. Show value in their voice! #MasteryChat
I encourage them and support them when it is time to voice their thoughts. I think just showing support and being there is #100. I think colleagues with similar thoughts help!
#MasteryChat
Also providing the opportunity for autonomy - through trust and belief of your teachers - is so important in building collective capacity in your school #MasteryChat
One way to change this is by providing others to offer input. Too few of individuals in places I've worked in took charge then ran with it! #masterychat
A2: Show that there are only positive consequences for candor. People have plenty to say - they’re just afraid of what will happen when they say it. #MasteryChat
Agreed, not just for the people that work there. The kids need to see us having fun at work too. They will be less likely to follow in our footsteps if we act miserable all the time #Masterychat
A2: Create the environment of trust...
1. What you say stays here
2. I'm an all-in, phone-down listener
3. Your voice matters, so say what you're really thinking
#masterychat
2) The best way to get others to voice their thoughts is to ask and then sit still. When you try to model by sharing your thoughts, it actually creates the impression that other views are not needed. Just ask and listen. #MasteryChat#boldhumility#LastingLearning
Kind of like that statement “ I can’t believe I get paid to do this amazing work called education” or as one T said in retirement gathering “ I feel like I go to work to go on vacation / kids make me so happy” #MasteryChat
I imagine it is like giving our Ss the room to feel safe and take a risk. So, too, it is with those in whom we want to build capacity. They have to be comfortable to take a risk and make a decision. #MasteryChat
A2: Try to get out into classrooms and see Ts/Ss as much as possible. My goal is to get to all of our 19 schools within 2 week period. Not easy or perfect, but makes a difference to have f2f convos. #MasteryChat
In leadership, there are those who exercise positional authority and those who employ moral authority. Guess which one most people would follow? #masterychat
A2: listen and ask questions. We call it thought partners. I have had some awesome conversations. I enjoy discussing relevant to our school and our goals.
#MasteryChat
A2: Providing open lines of communication, open door policy, Teacher Advisory, SIT, Staff meetings. You have to develop a culture of trust and respect, and value others thoughts and opinions. #masterychat
A2 We have #PLCs and build relationships to ensure everyone feels comfortable to share their thoughts. It is important to create norms in #PLCs to ensure we are always talking about what is best for kids and our school. #MasteryChat
A2 I work hard to listen more and speak less. It is better if I help colleagues solve their own issues and be in charge of their own growth, rather than me giving answers and controlling direction. #MasteryChat
A2) A lot of times, I'll get someone who says, "What do you think about..."
If it's great (a lot of times it is), I say, "You should bring that up..."
Most of the time, people just need a nudge to find their voice.
#MasteryChat
Great to see you here again friend. I always spend the whole chat laughing at our convos. How long will it take to bring up the road trip with @TechieTeachOtt? Should we bet over under?#masterychat
A1
Trust
Empathy
Vision
Honesty
Professionalism
Voice
Choice
A great leader steps back & lets people do what they are good at doing lifts people up celebrates the good listens learns from others and recognizes strengths without pointing out weaknesses.
#MasteryChat
A2) Learn to listen, connect, and celebrate. It's a shift from having meetings to disseminate information to fluid conversations where we are acquiring & generating ideas from those around us.
Move from freedback to gathering input.
#MasteryChat
A1: Modeling, inspiring, encouraging - but mostly, trusting your staff and giving them the autonomy to be creative and to take risks in the classroom. #masterychat
A2: Publicly praise colleagues. Offer colleagues seeking/needing help in a specific area another colleague to talk to rather than giving them your answer. Empower risk by sending others to the risk-taker!#MasteryChat
A2: We help colleagues to actively voice their thoughts by giving them the space to do so. We show them that we see them and they matter. We actively listen when they speak. We honor their opinions, even if they differ from our own. #masterychat
A1. We build the capacity of the entire team and current and future leaders in our buildings when we draw upon the ideas of others and support people as much as we can along the way. Allow leadership opportunities. The team is stronger than one individual. #masterychat
A2- Going to steal @RaeHughart's word of the night...and start with listening. Giving colleagues a sounding board to bounce ideas off of and support them in risk taking in their classrooms. #masterychat
A2: Having conversations with them about the voice they have and the ideas they have. Then helping them find pathways to unlock their voice. #masterychat
A2 Helping colleagues share their voice starts by creating a sense of belonging and demonstrating vulnerability. When we can put ourselves out their others will follow. #masterychat
A2 Always be available to listen, be supportive and help in any way that I can. Definitely by listening closely, ask questions, push thinking but not decisions, be open to what they are saying #masterychat
A2: Include staff in decision making. Use structures that encourage collaboration and hold all accountable for sharing ideas. Have an open door policy. Listen. #MasteryChat
Trust is the currency of relationships. We can work out from there...#masterychat
You can have control or growth but you can't have both. We have to learn to let go more.
A1: I help them sort through their thoughts and what it is they really want the admin to hear. If it’s a complaint, we come up with possible solutions. If it’s something they want to try, we put a plan together. A lot of times I even meet with them and admin. #masterychat
A2) help colleagues voice their thoughts by encouraging them to share their own experiences and letting them know what they have to say is valuable and can be helpful to someone else #masterychat
A2: We have department meetings where different people lead a brief 20 minute PD session. I believe that this is a positive even when I disagree with the particular PD because it encourages everyone to research best practices and improve their teaching.
#masterychat
A2: Open door, same moto as Vegas "What is said in here stays in here." Sometimes colleagues just need an ear. When open to conversation then support by listening, providing feedback if asked for, brainstorming. #masterychat
A2: Having a relationships w/ colleagues to encourage them to pick my brain, serve as an ear to listen to their challenges and opportunities while reminding them to be mindful of their values even when their mind was full. #MasteryChat
A2: Encouragement and show support. I always offer to be present help guide anyone who needs help while doing it. It can be a challenge but that’s ok. It’s our job to help. #MasteryChat
A2 Begins with having established, engaging relationships with team members where they are encouraged to share ideas, reflections, and innovative ideas that lead to improvement #MasteryChat
A1: Just as we expect Ts to differentiate for their students, leaders have to differentiate for their teachers. Identify strengths & passions! Put teams together based on these strengths & areas of need so that educators may learn from each other. Give them time! #MasteryChat
A2: Allowing a trusting, empathetic space, asking for feeback, following up, checking in, asking what questions they may have, pushing thinking through reflection, asking for input only when we intend to use it, honoring all voices through our actions. And listening. #MasteryChat
A1. We build the capacity of the entire team and current and future leaders in our buildings when we draw upon the ideas of others and support people as much as we can along the way. Allow leadership opportunities. The team is stronger than one individual. #masterychat
A2 Begins with having established, engaging relationships with team members where they are encouraged to share ideas, reflections, and innovative ideas that lead to improvement #MasteryChat
A2 Definitely listen! Sometimes, we just need to know that we are heard. I try to support them in taking their voice to the next level, whether it's sending and email, supporting through finding solutions, and being honest. #masterychat
A2: I believe validating ideas and thoughts of those around you gives them a voice. Listening to others help you further your thinking. When you share your thoughts, ideas, and exciting adventures others are inspired to share theirs.#masterychat
A2 Listen (funny how often that comes up when you are talking about leadership, right?) Listening without talking to a colleagues struggles, ideas, and hopes is really the first and most important step. Don't start spouting out ideas, just lissten first! #masterychat
A2: I meet with each staff member once a month for a coaching session. It is a fantastic forum to build relationships & trust. Once that is done, we can talk about almost anything. #masterychat
#Masterychat@heffrey Professional development based on interest and community building. When a positive school culture is the foundation and leadership based on independence and innovation a school will thrive. All voices have a speaker and everyone is valued b/c better together
A2. Establishing norms so one loud staff member doesn't dominate the tone. Also, having more than one way to communicate (working digital document for later questions, comments or feedback). Following up & frequent classroom visits as well to build relationships
#masterychat
A2- Ask what the opinions are, then listen to the answers without judging. If someone might have something to say, but may be hesitant, make room for their voice - discussion protocols in groups or 1:1. And keep your cool! It's not about YOU #MasteryChat
A2: Listen. Listen. Listen. Ask follow up questions for clarification and to encourage confidence and support. Offer safe environments/platforms to share those thoughts. #masterychat
A2)I am constantly seeking out the advice of my Ts and those I oversee, especially as someone who is new to the world of SpEd. I want to know if things can be done in better more efficient ways that is better for our Ss. I want them to know I value their thoughts. #MasteryChat
Building a relationship based on trust can truly lead to a stronger professional community in which the most important person wins, the student. #MasteryChat
A2: Show that there are only positive consequences for candor. People have plenty to say - they’re just afraid of what will happen when they say it. #MasteryChat
A2: Focus on the common purpose, the WHY that informs the actions of the collective. When something detracts from this purpose, we must acknowledge it and seek to resolve its existence. #masterychat
A2. I give Ts room to share w/ little to no outward judging statements. tether their frustration or excitement to a personal or professional experience. It’s not about pleasing me. We take ownership in our roles & missed/met expectations. #MasteryChat
Q2: It starts with relationships. People will share when trust is there. Be present in the building. One of my principals excels at this quality and I aspire to it. When people ask questions be open. Truly listen, not to provide answers, but to hear the other person. #MasteryChat
Sorry to run #MasteryChat! Family obligation...I look forward to catching up on the conversation later! Before I run, let me invite you to join me in a Voxer Book Study. 😊
A2: By listening to what he/she has to say. We all need someone to say whatever has been running through our minds. Speaking it into existence helps with accountability & having a supporter in your corner. #MasteryChat
A2. We’ve used PLCs, instructional rounds, Twitter & #observeme to foster and facilitate an open door atmosphere where great ideas are shared and celebrated across content areas.
Because the big secret of education is that we don’t teach content, we teach people.
#MasteryChat
A2 Provide multiple opportunities for edus to connect and share. It does not always have to be the same faculty meeting or team meeting. What if edus gathered around common professional goals? #masterychat
A2 Adhering to the 1/N rule introduced to me by the incomparable @techiesuzie -- your voice should be heard no more than those of however many other people there are in the group. And actively asking people who seem hesitant! #masterychat
A2: Ask open ended questions and then continue to ask questions to clarify. Give multiple ways to voice opinions - post its, speaking, emails. Adults are really just big kids! Similar approach applies! #masterychat
A2: Listen with intent. Don’t be distracted by extraneous stimuli. Listen to them, and then offer feedback. Also, remind them that their voice is important, just like a Ss’. #MasteryChat
A2. Promoting voice comes from shared values which can only be found through two-way communication and integrity. Administrators who do not walk the talk soon find that no one is willing to talk. Teachers have a unique ability to cut evaluate character. #MasteryChat
A2
Pause, listen, ask questions
Respect opinions of others
Do not judge Avoid criticism
Embrace change and differences
Practice tolerance
Give something new a try
#MasteryChat
A2: My experience is that the more involved Ts are, and the more valued they feel, the more likely they are to express their thoughts...and in a more positive manner as well. #MasteryChat
A2 As a leader you really have to plan for this provision:
When can teachers's voices be heard?
How can I amplify the voices of teachers?
What are the provisions for teachers to be heard?
When am I listening to teachers' voices?
You need to reflect & evaluate
#masterychat
A1 Capacity, the amount one can hold or produce. In this case, the term references edun, so we must be talking about graduates. The concern is not how much, but of what features, benefits and quality. How do we measure quality? US News rankings? Need clarification
#masterychat
A2 Be there to listen first so you know best how to encourage them, sometimes you can encourage them to speak up at a meeting or send an email... #masterychat
A2 Relationship building is the foundation, and it helps to establish a solution-focused culture instead of welcoming complaints without possible solutions. Show colleagues they are valued for their individual strengths but not looked down upon for their struggles. #masterychat
A2: I guess for me right now at a new school in a new position I’m just trying to be a listener for when staff does want to talk. I ask a lot of probing questions, too, to encourage others to add their thoughts to the pool of meaning. I try to make it safe. #MasteryChat
A2-Be an active listener where you let them do the talking and you just listen. Create an environment where what is being said stays there and you are not multitasks while they are talking. I might not agree, but hope I take emotions out and let them say their piece #masterychat
A2: Listen more and talk less . . . yes, but ALSO pay attention to body language. What your colleagues are NOT saying also carries weight.
I've found that a lot of primary teachers are hesitant to rock the boat so we just go with the flow. #MasteryChat
A2 we try to provide multiple platforms through content plc’s, grade level mtgs., faculty mtgs, different committees where we have dedicated Thursday mornings to allow for this to happen #MasteryChat
A2 by actually listening to hear, give feedback and let them know what you heard them say. Encourage by actively asking for their thoughts and noticing what they do and care about. Adults and kids want to be known. #MasteryChat
Q2. Make sure it’s a “ safe space” for all where everyone’s contributions are recognized as valued. Allow those who prefer not to speak up am avenue to contribute such that they’re comfortable with #MasteryChat
A2- excellent point. Too often (I know I sometimes do) leaders take for granted that colleagues already know how to participate in and share the air in professional discourse. Especially when feelings are running strong, structures for discourse is important. #masterychat
A2: Listen and encourage them to share without judgement only support. If they’re sharing ideas for class help them pursue to make it real. #MasteryChat
A2b - making room for all voices, not just the loudest, fastest or most confident ones. I LOVE discussion protocols for professional conversations in groups!https://t.co/jhQSs9xdLn#MasteryChat
A2. Ever tried scheduling two to five minute meetings with ALL of the staff and asking them, "If you were principal, what would you change?" #masterychat
A1) The biggest difference between a leader and a manager or boss is their ability to empower others to lead. The best way to do this is to share meaningful responsibility - give others real say, not just tasks to complete. Let them make decisions! #masterychat
#Masterychat@heffrey Open-forum meetings, share ideas on our Twitter page, visit classrooms and most importantly form relationships- smile and ask colleagues how everything is going? Listen. Lots of listening.
Knowing your co-workers really help. Mine know my facial expressions and body langauge of when I'm ready to talk and they make sure I get a chance. This goes along with more than one way to communicate. Being able to read people. #masterychat
A2: Giving a safe platform that allows for every voice to be heard is helpful. Being a #listener is key. I find that all people want to be heard and feel like that they matter. I make myself available and listen with an open heart. #MasteryChat
A2: We have a designated 1st period dedicated to collaborative planning! This also allows us to meet together and discuss as faculty, team or department and share thoughts and ideas. Collective Efficacy #MasteryChat
A2 cont.. for me it is about listening to their thoughts, & encouraging them to pursue those ideas, passions, & desires, but then followed up by supporting them through those ideas & thoughts & connecting the dots where I can #MasteryChat
Winner Winner! You get the golden ticket tonight! You are creating a safe space! There is a key difference between between approachable and available. Many leaders are available ("I have an open door policy!")but are they approachable? Keep at it! #MasteryChat
These are key points, Robert. Establishing and cultivating cultural norms where our team members are able to share a myriad of perspectives is essential to continuous improvement @rbreyer51#MasteryChat
A2. Be open to the ideas of others even if they differ from yours. Being critical of peoples’ ideas will only discourage their voice in the future. Sometimes people just need your encouragement and confidence in them. You’re team can’t be afraid to make mistakes. #MasteryChat
A2: It is crucial to give colleagues a platform where they feel comfortable. In a college course I took, one of my professors had us interact in an online chat room, and it boosted participation because it gave quieter students like myself a chance to speak out. #masterychat
I would like to agree with this statement...but there are certain people...cough @RaeHughart cough...who will judge if I take time away from #masterychat to expand on this topic...
In reply to
@woodard_julie, @RaeHughart, @TechieTeachOtt, @RaeHughart
A2: I try to listen more than keep up the conversation. Depending on the staff, I will play devil's advocate to prepare them for different reactions. #masterychat
A.2 Invest in your colleagues. Invest your time and energy. Make it your mission to make them feel comfortable and at ease. Show your interest in what they are saying and what they are bringing to the table. Support them,in private & in public. #MasteryChat
Interesting that so much focus is placed on student voice when some of our colleagues practice in environments where their voice may not be encouraged. Academic discourse must be celebrated and exercised. #masterychat
A2: Encouragement and support. Help our colleagues have a voice and offer a listening ear when needed. Have an open door where they feel comfortable. Listen more, talk less. #masterychat
A2. I’m joining late not feeling well but by listening to them & letting them know I value their thoughts & letting them know others would benefit from their contributions. I also set the example by voicing my thoughts as well. Create an environment of mutual respect #MasteryChat
A2: This is sometimes difficult. Often, if colleagues don't feel heard, they won't speak up. To help with this, create committees or task forces and make sure decisions made are put into action! #MasteryChat
Strengths based leadership sets people up for success. We have to operate from an aspirational mindset, not one that is focused on deficits. Trust me, educators by and large are aware of their growth areas. #MasteryChat
Be aware of the number of times teachers approach you for your inputs (unscheduled).
How many times do teachers share their setbacks with you?
How many times have you approached a teacher for their inputs and suggestions on something you have planned/ designed?*
#MasteryChat
A1. I think that we build the capacity of the entire team and current and future leaders in our buildings when we draw upon the ideas of others and support people as much as we can along the way. Allow leadership opps. too. The team is stronger than one individual. #masterychat
A2: Allowing a trusting, empathetic space, asking for feeback, following up, checking in, asking what questions they may have, pushing thinking through reflection, asking for input only when we intend to use it, honoring all voices through our actions. And listening. #MasteryChat
We personalize learning for Ss, & we must personalize learning & ways for Teacher voice to be heard!! Glad to hear this platform opened a door for you as we have moved things to voxer, Twitter etcs for our staff too #masterychat
A2: Actively Listen (in person & online)! Our PLN support is invaluable in hearing our colleagues across the states & abroad voice their thoughts, share their teaching, express their feelings/opinions, provide advice & expose their love for teaching freely! #MasteryChat
A3: Opportunities come from open minds and a mindset that great things can come from passionate people. Passions and Creativity thirsts for support and freedom to grow! #MasteryChat
A2 When you see a colleague do something great, ask them if they are willing to share with others. And when they come to you with an idea, don’t shoot it down. Encourage them to take those risks! Get excited with them. #Masterychat
My adm started the year off by giving us all small notebooks. Before meetings she sends out a question and we are invited to journal. For some, the time to think, reflect, and craft helps bring clarity to their thoughts strengthening our overall conversation. #masterychat
Taking time to hear others perspective is key. My ideas and thoughts aren’t perfect, but together we can come up with a plan that works for all! #masterychat
A3 - I think focusing on the strengths of individuals and allowing them to organically fall into rolls is one of the most effective ways to get the very best out of people #masterychat
A3. I love this question!
You listen carefully to their hopes and dreams.
You ask them how you might be able to help them achieve their dream.
#MasteryChat
A2) I have a lot of opinions. Like....a lot. After I’ve shared my thoughts on a topic I specifically request dissenting or disagreeing views to be expressed. It might shift my thinking, or at least embolden/refine it. Everybody wins. #masterychat
A3: I think it goes back to creating a risk taking environment where failure is seen as a growth opportunity. This will allow people to feel more comfortable sharing their passions. #masterychat
A4. You must first develop the relationships & know their passions -
Take their interests to ❤️ & listen, listen, listen to your amazing family❤️ #masterychat
#masterychat Yes! I also use 1-1 wherein I ask for three things that are so integral to the culture they can’t change and one thing that can or should change. Neat patterns to share with the large group afterwards.
A3: We are staring a new intervention in January with our 2nd graders. I'm taking on the role of a classroom T with 25+ Ss, doing some whole group mini lessons and small group work. The other Ts are working with the rest of the Ss. Should be fun. #MasteryChat
A3: Good leaders understand their organizations, maintain a steady dialogue, respond to the needs of others by eliminating barriers, and fuel these passions by affirmation and getting out of the way. #MasteryChat
A2 By listening. We need to listen to colleagues rather than talking over them. Using a yes and attitude will grow their ideas. Rather than a yes but attitude.
#MasteryChat
A3) Delegate decision making, releasing command and control. The only way to develop leaders is allow people to influence thinking, not just touch tasks. People's capacity grows when they stand with us, not behind.
#MasteryChat
A3: As a new teacher, I am on 3 committees (peer tutoring, math, and technology). I think it is crucial for individuals to be a part of something greater than themselves that intensifies their passion. #masterychat
A3. I struggle with this bc many passions require additional funding so we have to be smart about resources. For recreating roles, it builds out of student need: adapting for Ss. Working in T comfort zone w/ push to incorporate 1 new idea. #masterychat
A3 we have redesigned some of our “opportunity culture” which allows us to have expanded impact teachers (EIT) & here @BrainLMS serves as an 8th grade teacher as well as the social studies specialist & @MsGuerrero2014 serves as our personalized learning specialist #MasteryChat
A3: Let them find their slice of excellence. You can’t be great at ALL things but we can be great and ONE thing. Ex. I love letting students have voice and choice. I want to work on designing institution that allows for more opportunities for that! #Masterychat
A3 Whenever I can We Travel Westward. Basically, I don't care how we get West as long as we do. So travel (teach) in a way that excites you & helps your kids #masterychat
A2b) Leaders also should show they are vulnerable to others, that will open the way for others to share their ideas and open communication #MasteryChat
#MasteryChat@heffrey It comes down to truly getting to know your Ss. 1-minute check ins every week and having conversations with Ss daily by walking around and sitting down with them- this builds trust and you learn so much- this is how interest & passion illuminate learning
My former principal, @Boozer83, taught me to always carry a set of post-it notes with me. You never know when you will need to write something down, whether it comes from a T, a S, or you have a moment of genius. #MasteryChat
Step 1 : Get to know their Passions
Step 2 : Ask the Question
Step 3 : Support their Brainstorming
Step 4 : Be a Partner
Step 5 : Direct them to outside resources
Then.... like them fly #masterychat
A3. You must first develop the relationships & know their passions -
Take their interests to ❤️ & listen, listen, listen to your amazing family❤️ #masterychat
A3:
I think my admin does this by giving me freedom. When I try something in the classroom my principal says try it. What's the worst that is going to happen? I like that if I have an idea, I can try it and they support me @Mrs_Walker_II helps me too, my mentor.
#MasteryChat
A3
Ask what they want to learn
Personal learning for professional development
Let professionals select what they want to learn and give them time to learn it
Give them choices
Give them time
Give them opportunities
#MasteryChat
A3: We create opportunities for others to work within their passions when we create space to try new things, take risks, get a little messy, & learn from it all. That can't happen in a vacuum of control, but it can flourish in an environment filled w/ trust & agency. #masterychat
Yes! Caring about those you lead means listening to their aspirations. Putting people in positions that match their desires is best for all. Talk about passion! #masterychat A3
A3. I love this question!
You listen carefully to their hopes and dreams.
You ask them how you might be able to help them achieve their dream.
#MasteryChat
A3: Celebrate risk-taking successes and learning opportunities. Provide safe environment for people to share, so they can learn from each other. #masterychat
A2 just as Ls are different,Assoc's are as well. V comes from opportunity to exercise it; engagement comes from feeling valued; w/o being listened to, you won't speak up. Therefore, opportunity for them to speak and for you to listen has to do with how well I listen #MasteryChat
A3 Creating opportunities for team members to work within their passions requires an investment in them to determine what their passions are, areas of strength where they can demonstrate those passions, and how these passions can enrich their roles on the team #MasteryChat
A3) in order to create opportunities for people to work within their passion you need to know what strengths they possess and give them the flexibility to work and celebrate successes and learn from failures #masterychat
A3: I love this question on so many levels! So important to find time for passion work,. One of the things we've done is host a TEDx Talk. This allowed for ppl to create and organize and play to their strengths. Tailored PD is another way. #MasteryChat
A3 I believe you have to really know the person/ build relationships. A colleague wanted to facilitate PD at the District level but did not know how to go about doing it. I suggested we plan a PD together. We will present a session on #metacognition in two weeks. #MasteryChat
A2 I am trying to be a better listener, make sure not to have an answer prepared immediately and give it time. Also making sure I give them the time and attention they need and then act in those conversations if possible. #masterychat
A3) Trusting teachers to take risks and creating an environment where failure is valued as a learning tool for both teachers and learners. #masterychat
A3) Delegate decision making, releasing command and control. The only way to develop leaders is allow people to influence thinking, not just touch tasks. People's capacity grows when they stand with us, not behind.
#MasteryChat
A3: People are at their best when pursuing their passions. Let people bring you crazy ideas and then find ways to integrate those ideas into serving your mission. #MasteryChat
A3. Share with them the different ways to become engaged throughout the school year. Offer opportunities to serve to leadership team, serve on key initiatives teams. #Masterychat
A3 redesigning the educators role has allowed our Ts to dip into leadership while still living out their passion in the classroom, we also have MCL’s (multicultural leaders) that serve part time in the classroom & developing others within the school #MasteryChat
A3- You lead them to opportunities that will coincide with their stengths, hopes, and goals. Sometimes we need a gentle nudge to get out of our comfort zone. #masterychat
A3: by asking questions instead of determining the solution. Help them work through the problem instead of just giving them the answers every time. #masterychat
A3: opportunities. Giving people the chance to be leaders and take on different roles. As previously stated we all have talents we just need to give people the chance to allow them to shine.
#masterychat
A3: WhenTs talk: listen. Pay attention to what Ts do for fun in their personal time. Give Ts an opportunity & platform to showcase those passions within the walls of the school. #MasteryChat
A3: when my team & I plan PD I ask each person for their ideas & allow them freedom to present their passions, we discuss, create, practice with feedback over a 2-3 week period! 💜Theme based PD has become our thing! #masterychat#tlap@burgessdave💥
✅ https://t.co/uNkE2yw4tH
A3: Be a motivator, encourage independence, & promote high expectations, that inspires your leadership team to brainstorm more ideas to promote academic & character growth than can possibly be implemented. #masterychat
A3 getting to know each other as people allows us the opportunity to find out what people are passionate about. Once you have that information use it to encourage each other to bring their passions to work. The encourage, support and encourage some more. #MasteryChat
A3-I was AP for 5 years but my true passions are curriculum with state standards, inclusive practice and ensuring our students all become self regulated learners. I found my tribe and advocated for coaching positions and hang on the strengths of Ts to get it done.#masterychat
Step 1 : Get to know their Passions
Step 2 : Ask the Question
Step 3 : Support their Brainstorming
Step 4 : Be a Partner
Step 5 : Direct them to outside resources
Then.... like them fly #masterychat
Encouraging others to seek their passion is about having faith and trusting that others will go above and beyond to do what is right. Having an atmosphere here risk-taking is encouraged and fostered allows passion and innovation to thrive.#masterychat
A3)Give then the opportunity to find their niche. It is like balling Ss learn. Why should I limit them in how they can be passionate. I may guide them in a general direction, but ultimately they are going to do more the more they are invested and have ownership. #MasteryChat
A3: Give teachers your blessing, encourage professional growth, offer PD, set expectations for continued improvement & best practices, & celebrate their effort & accomplishments. #MasteryChat
A3. To find out what a person aspires or dreams to be, utilizing their strengths, getting them to believe in themselves, and to start growing their wings to take flight! #masterychat
Those with passion have ideas on how to share their knowledge/excitement. When approached with ideas I try to work from a place of "yes we can do that!" Original ideas may need to change to fit needs/policies of the school/district but still provides opportunity. #MasteryChat
A3. I love this question!
You listen carefully to their hopes and dreams.
You ask them how you might be able to help them achieve their dream.
#MasteryChat
Space and purposeful time. Allowing teachers and students to reflect, think, work together, and flexibly tackle initiatives as they see fit. (Blow up schedules at certain times!) #masterychat#leadupchat
A3 have conversations and take time to learn about people, their interests, find opportunities or be . supportive in the opps they find/suggest, encourage risk-taking, fail, try again #masterychat#quotes4EDU@Buncee
A3 For my Ss I try to make sure and offer multiple ways to shine and lead and hopefully encourage others to step up as leaders. I'm not admin, but I do with a great team and I go them when I know they've had greater success and ask for help/advice and lead me. #masterychat
One way to have people think deeply about their roles is to ask them, “When you are successful at (fill in the blank), what will that look like?” Then we must coach from the perspective of that identity, not the one we presume. #MasteryChat
A3 Our PLCs start w/ each faculty member identifying goals. We use these goals to create Families that are given time to meet, discuss, & observe. A deep focus on teaching & learning sparks institutional shifts & further enhances individual passions. #masteryChat
A3: It starts with choice - whether it’s duty or what committee they’re on, people should always be asked what they want to do. It creates ownership, which is key to engagement. Also, acknowledging that passion work still takes time and making time for pursuit. #masterychat
Q3: Great Q! I don’t think we do this enough in education (myself included). For me it’s about being open-minded, seeing strengths and building relationships so that I know the passions of my staff. Then it’s asking for feedback or ideas and empowering them to do it. #MasteryChat
A3: Not so good with this one. Do a lot myself. Need to do a better job of recruiting help. I know so many who would help. I want to be a part of everything and sometimes do too much and hog all the great ideas. Don’t let others utilize theirs. 😬 #MasteryChat
A3: Provide support. Learn their talents, passions, and strengths and empower them to use these to better teaching and learning. Passion creates an exciting teaching energy. #MasteryChat
A3: I think it's like finding the perfect pair of jeans! We have to provide people with an opportunity to "try on" different roles. Allow them to shadow an expert, take time to observe, get outside of their building/district, & encourage them to take flight. #masterychat
A3 If the passion has anything to do with writing, consider joining me in an online course called Translating Any Kind of Feedback into Successful Writing. We'll use comics and narrative to develop skills. #masterychat
A3. I love this question!
You listen carefully to their hopes and dreams.
You ask them how you might be able to help them achieve their dream.
#MasteryChat
A3-If I know a teacher is truly passionate about something, then I let them give it a try. There can be no innovation if we are not allowing others to try. #MasteryChat
A3: Leaders can create opportunities for people to work within their passions by encouraging innovation and exploration! There is no "one-size fits all" teaching manual, teachers need the trust and opportunity to find their own style. #masterychat
A1 #masterychat Love this notion; you have a real grasp of what good delegation looks like.
Delegation=desired outcome, deadlines, responsibility & authority, not step-by-step instructions. AKA, standards/outcomes, not 600 page curriculum
A3 Give educators the opportunity to simply tell you exactly what they dream their job could be. You may not be able to make every one of them happen, but hearing their dreams and trying to take small steps to get them there is powerful! #masterychat
A3. Find out what your team is interested in. Allow them to carry out roles they may be interested in. Anyone can be a leader in the building. You can lead from the from any spot in the pack. Some may lead extracurriculars, curriculum, PLCs, SIP, PBIS. Endless opps. #masterychat
A3: Ask and observe! If a passion is there, on display or dormant, a strong leader finds a way to release this energy, never trying to be the hero, but always trying to be the hero maker. #masterychat
My principal and assistant principal are really good at giving teachers opportunities to shine by conducting PDs and activities around school. They appreciate the talents that we bring to the table. #masterychat
Absolutely, especially when funding is not available, valuing our teachers ideas & serving as a co-pilot when needed has been tremendous in building leadership capacity, @MrsCamposLMS & @NeuWhitney lead the way for our Jingle Jog & Holiday Festival #MasteryChat
In reply to
@RaeHughart, @MrsCamposLMS, @NeuWhitney
A3. One of the passion projects I’m currently working up is a fully gamified, yearlong “badge collection” approach to PD. Teachers select their own projects for professional growth, collect achievements, then share stories with colleagues at regular unconferences. #MasteryChat
A3. Find out what your team is interested in. Allow them to carry out roles they may be interested in. Anyone can be a leader in the building. You can lead from any spot in the pack. Some may lead extracurriculars, curriculum, PLCs, SIP, PBIS. Endless opps. #masterychat
Agree, Ashley. As leaders, we are charged to tap into our team members' potential and provide opportunities where they demonstrate strengths to reach their professional learning goals - requires interpersonal acuity from the leader @hawkinscentral#MasteryChat
A3: If passion isn’t at the forefront, the work suffers. Any administrative practice that prevents passion must be avoided. Academic freedom means let the teacher be the professional. #masterychat
Q3 day YES or Why Not?! as often and quickly as you can and when you aren’t sure, say let be think about that and get back within 24 hours. #masterychat
I would add this to the role of leadership: Ask. If you don't ask, you place the burden of communication on the person on the low end of the power dynamic. If you're not asking, it communicates that you don't care to hear. Asking demonstrates vulnerability and care. #masterychat
A2 Listen (funny how often that comes up when you are talking about leadership, right?) Listening without talking to a colleagues struggles, ideas, and hopes is really the first and most important step. Don't start spouting out ideas, just lissten first! #masterychat
A3: when people are given tools, trust and the freedom to attack problems in novel ways, then many naturally find their niches. It's not always perfect, but that's not the point! People buy in when they feel ownership for an idea, project or solution #masterychat
A3 Creating opportunities requires leaders to know & understand what the interests & passions are of colleagues - and it's all about the relationships that you have developed with them - through the ongoing conversations together you can reimagine their roles #masterychat
A3: By simply saying YES or WHY NOT! The worst thing someone can tell you when you want to try something new, explore a passion/interest, or recreate a process/product is no. Be the yes person, offer support & guidance where & when it can be given - just be there. #MasteryChat
Absolutely. It’s why I love teaching computer science - I have guidelines, pacing, and standards, but still room to make my own decisions to do what is best for Ss. We have to find ways to do this in our schools. #masterychat
A3) There’s always discussions about making learning fun for Ss; Ts should make it fun for themselves, too! Intertwining your passion with your subject is the best of both worlds and helps build those relationships with Ss. Learning together. #MasteryChat
A3) Try to spin a few plates at once, and see if any strike the various fancies of potential collaborators. Let them jump in at place of their choosing. Or, offer to help a colleague reify a project of their own. Embolden them through active support. #masterychat
A3: Creating opportunities for people to recreate their roles to work within their passion takes flexibility, trust, and positivity. The benefits are energized teachers, enthusiastic students, and leaders everywhere. #MasteryChat
A3: I always encourage risk-taking by our teachers, and try to build relationships where I can find out what their passions are so that I can help provide support. #MasteryChat >> Sorry I'm late! Jumping in from Alabama!
A3 #masterychat If a classroom is a safe haven- a collaborative community- students are confident and will share their interests & passion. E have a community board where they share calling cards- they use this to meet new people
Absolutely, teacher perfectionists often have difficulty w/ productive struggle. We have to find ways to cultivate and encourage it through the #growthmindset#MasteryChat
Q3 I think the most important piece of this is the culture that is created. If people within know that it is ok to be innovative and try new things (even if they fail), amazing things will happen! #MasteryChat
A3: Creating opportunities for people to recreate their roles to work within their passion takes flexibility, trust, and positivity. The benefits are energized teachers, enthusiastic students, and leaders everywhere. #MasteryChat
Observe how they react, respond, and engage during meetings/PD activities and then challenge them to lead out a building practice or focus. #Masterychat
A3: Teachers should be able to bring their passions into the classroom. If one likes to cook, play an instrument, drama, a craft, etc. Tie them into the lessons. Students then see Teacher as more than just a Teacher. #masterychat
A3: As a special ed teacher I provide guidelines to my paraprofessionals all while providing them opportunities the freedom to interact with Ss how it fits them instead of supporting via my teaching style #masterychat
A3 Find what sparks their joy, ask them what they hope to get out of the next week/month/year, find out how you can support, and be a resource -- and keep the relationship going!! #masterychat
Yea, I understand. I am just a big proponent of finding funds within the community. I hope you continue to push for partnerships! They can impact these types of initiatives in a large way! #masterychat
Love this idea, Kevin! We have about 220 teachers... would you still suggest trying to do a 1-1 with each person? Maybe over the summer? (thinking out loud) #masterychat
A3: I act as their coach. That is the best approach. Some will succeed with little guidance, but others just don’t know where to start. You start where they are, inject their passions, support them. Celebrate them! #MasteryChat
A3- I’m often the one who does it bc no one else will. I like to pass off an activity to another Tw/help so that T is not all alone the first go around. #masterychat
Q3: creating opportunities for engagement is key. Our school added a Building Leadership Team and an Innovators group to work on ideas for the future. Great places for people to find their voice. #MasteryChat
A4: I have a core leadership team that meets every two weeks with the essential leaders in the building. Then I invite others on a rotating basis so many voices are heard. #MasteryChat
A3 Sometimes people just need permission. Having an informal lunch chat and inquiring about what new paths could be followed or new ideas explored can lead to saying, "how can we work together to do that?" #masterychat
Q3. Relationships. Get to know your students/staff/colleagues. I don’t work in a vacuum, I facilitate and bring the passions together. Sum of parts =whole=magic. Check my ego at door and let others shine in their areas of specialty #Masterychat .
A3: Encourage them to innovate & to be adventurous. Encourage them to offer genius hours. In AK, every Friday was an enrichment day (or genius day) where 7-12 teachers taught something they were passionate about (e.g. archery, photography, astronomy, snowboarding #masterychat
What I am hearing you say is TIME to know your people. Isn't it true that people can tell when we are interested in their abilities more than than just doing the job! Great thinking Chrys! #MasteryChat
A4: Collaboration starts with listening and a whole lot of mutual trust. Egos must be parked outside so mutual appreciation can foster true shared thinking in a positive manner. #MasteryChat
A3. I first ask them “what are their passions” I show them that I am interested in what they have to say & will assist them if they need help. I also share my passions with them. I also let them know that if they make a mistake, the process is also important #MasteryChat
I like how you said "interested in" versus assigning roles from the beginning. When someone has interest and initiative the work will be done with passion and care. This won't always be the case when a role is assigned. #masterychat
A3. Find out what your team is interested in. Allow them to carry out roles they may be interested in. Anyone can be a leader in the building. You can lead from any spot in the pack. Some may lead extracurriculars, curriculum, PLCs, SIP, PBIS. Endless opps. #masterychat
A4 - I think the use of PLN models and slow roll-out / pilot methodology with new initiatives is a great way to provide value, innovation, and allows a discussion about the impact of various ideas and initiatives to be discussed. #masterychat
We do an altered schedule on Friday and have loads of electives. Teachers choose what courses to create based in personal interests and student ideas.
#masterychat
A4:
I recently did this a Google form Avenue with my kids. I asked them what they wanted out of their math class. I tried station method teaching recently and they want to do it next semester too.
#MasteryChat
A4: As a new teacher, I collaborate with the other teacher who teaches 4th grade and other teachers within my hallway. I also expanded my PLN on Twitetr which allows me to collaborate with educators via mysteryskype such as @hayes_melisa and @amycooper100. #masterychat
A4 - By shouting it from the Twitter mountain tops! Big goal for this year is to spread the good news, things, gestures as loud and proud as I can! Great things happen in schools everyday! Let's talk about them - OFTEN!
#MasteryChat
That is the next steps: finding community partners. We have great support of local NYC Councilman. Just need to find partners for the arts projects: film club, digital animation, graphic novels, etc #MasteryChat
A1: Starts with relationship building, learning about the staff, creating a world where staff are valued in creating a student centered learning environment. #masterychat
Yea, I have tried keyboards on other sites, but it takes so much time :P
My spelling is awful (in English & Hebrew!)
I studied for a few months in Tel Aviv and just feel in love with the area. I have incredible family there I need to visit soon. Its been too long #masterychat
A3: Involve people in collaborative solution-oriented sessions! Start small, like the 10 minute collaboration model from @casas_jimmy from #Culturize#masterychat
A4)My leadership style is collaborative. I seek out advice and try to get as much input as I can. Even if in the end I am the one making the decision, I still like hearing everyone’s take. And, where I can I try to lead the team to a consensus. #MasteryChat
A3: I'll ask forgiveness if I push just a little with my answer. Do any other leaders find there are times when the most creative & passionate teachers go too far & too fast that they lose sight of being responsive to students? #masterychat
Student needs & facilitating deep learning while building critical knowledge is our blueprint. I've needed to talk to some of our teachers about not getting carried away w/innovation & change that we lose sight of our strength and what works #masterychat
A4 - I think the use of PLN models and slow roll-out / pilot methodology with new initiatives is a great way to provide value, innovation, and allows a discussion about the impact of various ideas and initiatives to be discussed. #masterychat
A4: the intervention we are starting - a teammate and I went to hear the author, came back and thought, tried the intervention on small model, talked with other stakeholders and got a plan in place. We knew more had to be done, we have to try, our kids deserve it. #MasteryChat
A4) This may be hard to answer in traditional educational structures but there is MUCH opportunity to make decisions using a design thinking, iterative approach takes leadership to a new level. Work within the constraints. #MasteryChat
A1: when admin put teachers first, then teachers put students first. Admin should support, value, and focus on strengths of teachers. Celebrate teachers often! #masterychat
A4 I'm in a new role for my district this year, so my colleague and myself are constantly collaborating with each other and teachers as we develop and define the position better. They're frustrations and celebrations all the time but both come through send reflection #masterychat
Absolutely! Or we don't feel supported and so shrink inside our comfort zone. Some people prefer to hide behind "obligations" for a multitude of reasons #masterychat
A4: By being transparent, and talking about issues and options openly. Listening to feedback, and getting consensus. Not everyone will agree, but all will have a voice, and then we all must move forward with the decisions made. #masterychat
A4: My PLC meets with student groups throughout the year to hear their concerns/joys about school climate - THEN - we stay with students to empower them to make the changes they seek = not our work, but theirs.
#masterychat
A4. I believe in shared leadership and in empowering my team. For example, my two assistant principals lead out important building initiatives. #masterychat
A4: I implemented Scrum in my classroom, which builds collaborative decision making in Ss. True collaboration is about giving every team member the ability to use their strengths to better the org - if we teach kids, we build it in the next generation. #masterychat
A4) whenever working with a team on an end goal- follow a design that accounts for inclusive practice. Everyone brings variability and strengths, how do we play on that and get everyone contributing to the end goal! #masterychat
I have been a part of a leadership team as a classroom educator and I greatly appreciate the ability to share ideas and collaborate for the benefit of our school. #masterychat
A4: I have a core leadership team that meets every two weeks with the essential leaders in the building. Then I invite others on a rotating basis so many voices are heard. #MasteryChat
A4 #masterychat SCICON- Students chose topic, format of experimental design or survey based research- they also could choose partners from any of my 6 GT classes- then they chose how to display & present on SCICON night at the STEM center
A4) This may be hard to answer in traditional educational structures but there is MUCH opportunity to make decisions using a design thinking, iterative approach takes leadership to a new level. Work within the constraints. #MasteryChat
A4: Our BLT (building leadership team) often meets to discuss future PD, etc., and we always take our ideas back to the teams to get feedback/suggestions before making final decisions because it takes a village. #MasteryChat
A4
Our school has designated time in the schedule for departments to meet for teams to meet and for data to be reviewed collaboratively
Our District Leads encourage class visits encourage collaborative observations and provide time for reflection #MasteryChat
I very, very seldom have said “no” to such a request. Magic happens when you trust your teachers and let them create great pedagogy through their passions. #MasteryChat
A2: During larger meetings, I love first putting colleagues in small groups to allow them to work through thoughts & ideas. That gives them an opportunity to bounce ideas before sharing out, & if they aren't comfortable doing so, group members can share for them. #masterychat
A4. 1st we began by making sure everyone in BLT (Building Leadership Team) understood how to create SMART goals from looking at a variety of data. Each PLC had 1 BLT person there to share out what they were learning and possible goals. We continued this the next yr. #MasteryChat
A4 I think there is no better example of shared & collaborative decision making than that of the @teachbetterteam. Seriously, @RaeHughart@chadostrowski@jeffgargas & I constantly bash our brains together, try out solutions, & push each other forward! #masterychat
A4. Go to bat with the Ts. Stand by them even in setbacks and never lay blame. Always look for the wins and how to grow. I used to be a pity party, blame others as a teacher & learned how damaging that was. #MasteryChat
A4: Collaborative decision making can be a powerful tool for building a community of learners. I try to include an element of choice in most things that we study. Student buy-in is always greater when they feel that they have a voice! #MasteryChat

A4: By making a commitment to follow through on those decisions. By planning next steps and end goals. By planning - within reason - to be flexible in case we encounter an unexpected snag. #masterychat
Thanks Rae! I would like to point out there may be some other trouble makers here...not me...however my brain is fried and my answers tonight are garbage ha. I blame it on teacher break brain. #Masterychat

We do monthly STEM projects in class. The groups change each month. The students are required to collaborate and decide how and what to make based on a few guidelines (also whyfo make it)! The collaboration that takes place is UNBELIEVABLE #3rdgrade#MasteryChat
A5 Building teams at all levels in schools for collaborative work & collective learning with a focus of student learning builds ownership, share and collaborative decision making - it provides opportunities for all to take on leadership within the school community
#masterychat
“I know nothing but the fact of my ignorance.” Not to that extent, but I am not afraid to admit that together there is not a problem that we cannot solve. We have it within ourselves to solve any obstacle that comes our way. #MasteryChat
A4: Collaboration in decision making is the ideal, especially considering research into motivation where people engage more when they possess agency over the systems in which they operate. #masterychat
A4) I often ask my students for feedback on lessons. Things they liked and didn’t like and suggestions for improvement. Sometimes I work in suggestions the very next block sometimes the next year. #masterychat
A4: Our team is built on shared leadership. An activity we are working through now is a premortem. Can’t wait to see what everyone brings to the table for this conversation. #masterychat
A4: allowing for discussion & openness & building trust 💥among the team is essential. We reflect together, use data, and make decisions with everyone giving their input! I encourage 💜honesty #masterychat we use some guiding questions ❓for our PD 👀
A2: Creating PD and committee opportunities for staff to share innovation and design project based learning experiences that will benefit the school community. #masterychat
A4) Asking questions and truly listening to the answers, not just asking to say you asked. It helps build respect and morale from both sides. #masterychat
A4: I recently worked with some teachers on decision-making to the next level when it comes to their professional learning. You can read more here: https://t.co/NFZ2f9ajnd#masterychat
Collaboration starts with respect for others and their ideas. You might disagree with others but you still need to listen and take their ideas seriously #masterychat
And education is so very much about authentic connections! When students see their teachers as individuals with interests, talents, and struggles, they can relate better to them! #masterychat
A4: By following through with a plan and executing it. Later, reflect on the outcomes and think aboutwhat can be done differently next time to be better than the last. #masterychat
A3) There’s always discussions about making learning fun for Ss; Ts should make it fun for themselves, too! Intertwining your passion with your subject is the best of both worlds and helps build those relationships with Ss. Learning together. #MasteryChat
A4 (possibly this applies) I started an after school club of kids who meet with me to help use our curriculum guidelines and their knowledge of what works to help me in designing the next few weeks Learning experiences.., #masterychat
A4: Strong collaborative teams within our PLC takes shared decision making the next level--all with the support of amazing administrators who listen & empower T's #MasteryChat
A4 I feel that I have built strong bonds with a group of my colleagues and that established trust....has made it possible to go outside that “comfort zone” and level up. #MasteryChat
Q4 Not everyone in the room is going to completely agree on every decision; so it’s important for honest discussion. However, once that decision is made it is important to be committed and move forward with the decision that is made and not undermine. #MasteryChat
A4 I think there is no better example of shared & collaborative decision making than that of the @teachbetterteam. Seriously, @RaeHughart@chadostrowski@jeffgargas & I constantly bash our brains together, try out solutions, & push each other forward! #masterychat
A4 It’s important to create leaders in the school, be a school wide PLC- not just that one hour plan time but at all times. I see our Ts taking on one another’s Ss and helping out wherever and whenever needed- that’s where it is at. #MasteryChat
A4: My 8th grade social studies team has been using #TheGridMethod this year. I am leading EdCamp sessions tomorrow for any teachers interested in what we are doing. #MasteryChat#TeachBetter
I second this. The @teachbetterteam is amazing and consists of incredible individuals who model what great teaching looks like. They have been instrumental in my journey thus far. Their support brings tears to my eyes. #masterychat
A4 I think there is no better example of shared & collaborative decision making than that of the @teachbetterteam. Seriously, @RaeHughart@chadostrowski@jeffgargas & I constantly bash our brains together, try out solutions, & push each other forward! #masterychat
A4: I think you have to decide how you’re going to decide, beforehand. And I think the next level, where people often get stuck, is moving from decision making to action. For example, after making a decision, figuring out who’s going to do what with it. #MasteryChat
A4 My team and I collaborate daily...LOL multiple times a day. We have some serious issues to work on this year, but we're willing to come to the table and have an open discussion. We took our cohesiveness to the next level by becoming presenters for the VDOE. #masterychat
A2) I have a lot of opinions. Like....a lot. After I’ve shared my thoughts on a topic I specifically request dissenting or disagreeing views to be expressed. It might shift my thinking, or at least embolden/refine it. Everybody wins. #masterychat
🙌🏻 Communication is key. Without transparency and openness to discuss any and all topics building trust is difficult. allowing the opportunity for voice is important! #masterychat
A4: By being transparent, and talking about issues and options openly. Listening to feedback, and getting consensus. Not everyone will agree, but all will have a voice, and then we all must move forward with the decisions made. #masterychat
A4. I don’t always agree with a decision the team has made but if I know it’s in the best interest of the students, I just might have to give their idea a whirl. Give the group a voice. Give it a chance. Whose to say my ideas was the best anyways. #masterychat
A3: Involve people in collaborative solution-oriented sessions! Start small, like the 10 minute collaboration model from @casas_jimmy from #Culturize#masterychat
I think it would work. We also have 7 people on our admin team, and we could divide it up. I think I'm going to bring this up tomorrow in our admin meeting. Thanks, you two! #masterychat
A4) When I make decisions for my classroom that have down-stream effects, I always confer with those teachers and allow them to help shape my decision making. Involving all stakeholders is important and respectful. #masterychat
A3 does this question assume that the roles need recreating? Seems too "from scratch" for me. While there are those that need to recreate or get out of the profession, many are on it! Those need to be given space and allow to adapt and flex their strengths. #MasteryChat
A3 cont Those who are "stuck" need closer guidance and assistance in developing an environment in which learners can explore, discover and capitalize on their passions. Some think there is no other way. They need to be shown "the way".
#MasteryChat
A4. Collaboration starts with listening to what a S is interested in doing. with P present at meeting, suggestions and opportunities to various pathways of interests in learning can be given to S and further researched. #masterychat
A3: By learning staff interests and passions beyond schoolhouse and using committees and clubs to establish pathways for staff to teach students in another light with a focus on their passions. #masterychat
A4: My school underwent 5.3 million in renovations this past summer. We opened w/ combination of new staff, Ss, & grade levels. We took down walls and opened multi-age teaching classrooms. We are still in the process of figuring it all out, but we continue to learn. #MasteryChat
