Hi Robert. So glad you could join us tonight
Q1: What are some reasons teachers give homework?
Always great to see you, Tim. Was great hanging out on Friday
are you around to talk homework?
A1: We give homework for two reasons: one is to allow students to finish incomplete work (most often for me) + another is reinforce.
A1: They believe Ps want it. They want Ps to know what is going on. The additional practice for Ss
A1: Ts are often expected to give nightly homework, sometimes even when there isn't anything worthwhile to give
A1: they think it is necessary, parents want it, to review class material and sometimes to make kids miserable.
A1) Meant to be independent practice & to extend learning. Often turns out to be a cause for failing grades
A1; parent and admin want/require it.
Carol ELA Consultant from Long Island here at to discuss homework.
A1: Sometimes because they had homework when they were students.
A1. Parents expect their child's schooling to be a carbon copy of what they experienced.
Ugh... we have to find ways to help them rethink what homework looks like. https://t.co/cS3oihjNJ2
A1; parent and admin want/require it.
A1: I also think there is a little of "because that's how it was always done"
there's so much in this response and reality that makes my heart sad :( https://t.co/JfP4BUZnXx
A1) Meant to be independent practice & to extend learning. Often turns out to be a cause for failing grades
Checking in just a bit late.
this seems to be so with a lot of why we do things in ed... so not so good https://t.co/mt4FQM0198
A1: Sometimes because they had homework when they were students.
A1 that's the way we've always done it.
A1: While these all might be causes for a teacher to assign homework, none of them are good reasons. https://t.co/tCfIOXBnWy
You're actually just in time, we're still on Q1.
A1 Although there are tons of excuses to give homework, we must really be purposeful in what, how and why we offer it
A1 Ts give homework because it has always been the "thing" to do; others see it as a reinforcer of skills.
Our admin suggested no homework this yr..there were Ts who fought for it. I was surprised.
Hi Jessy. Glad you could join us. Better late than never
A1: To allow Ss to complete problems/assignments at their own pace
See?? See how wise she is? It's not about killing homework, it's about making it meaningful. https://t.co/bQz8lL1H68
A1 Although there are tons of excuses to give homework, we must really be purposeful in what, how and why we offer it
A1: (add your own sarcastic tone) how else will we teach responsibility?
We need to step back and question why and how we do things.
A1 because it is the way things are always done. Is that a good reason???
A1: Because a grade level does it - all Ts need to be on same page, especially if there are twins at a gr. level
Tell us: how's it going? https://t.co/KcuHcrM06w
Our admin suggested no homework this yr..there were Ts who fought for it. I was surprised.
all things in ed for sure. We also have to consider our audience. They are different now than before
I have my moments and my students appreciate that But I think the HW tide is turning
so glad you could join us Carol
Over the years, convinced my team to do less. :)
How did the parents react ?
A1 Ask another question like that and you'll lose 10 points!
Glad you could join us Jace
no homework= 0 points in many classrooms
If you don't build the understanding of why the thinking has shifted, they will fight it.
I am sure it is mixed, my experience they are fine with it, many celebrate it. https://t.co/MRV7O4vPWu
How did the parents react ?
Had it on my schedule to join in the last . Sorry to see it close.
A1: Comfort level. Worked for them when they were in school. Need to break that cycle.
No - it's a bad reason... for just about everything
A1 Definitely because they think they have to, but also because others do it and parents expect it.
A1: Teachers give homework because it's always been done that way.
Oh man... this is an entirely different topic. Don't even get started on grades. https://t.co/U02HKKjFtF
no homework= 0 points in many classrooms
Research was provided, facts/resources. https://t.co/evsI0GJDfv
If you don't build the understanding of why the thinking has shifted, they will fight it.
Q2: What are the problems with traditional homework?
Yes. We can't use their opinions as an excuse not to make a shift. We need to inform. https://t.co/xcm5GllK1M
If you don't build the understanding of why the thinking has shifted, they will fight it.
Yes, our audience is the reason why we teach ! Their needs must come first
A1 Because it is what has always been done
Also, homework is on many report cards and/or used for grading purposes. Takes forever to change a report card from
This is it: purposeful, passion-driven HW. Challenge & scholarship, too, but always full of deep MEANING. https://t.co/YgtjbbtFMD
A1 Although there are tons of excuses to give homework, we must really be purposeful in what, how and why we offer it
Yes there's the bug.I was going 2 post it. That's the way we always have done it is not a good reason
It can also be used as a "gotcha" rather than a "caughtya" - as in "caughtya" doing something good
A2: Ss who get the subject, don't need more practice. Ss who don't get more practice doing it wrong.
A2 often its Ss attempting to do something they don't fully understand-why practice something wrong? https://t.co/gD1CrDXNXo
Q2: What are the problems with traditional homework?
Thanks for joining, Carol. Appreciate you scheduling to be in
Do you think it actually worked for them? Or they refuse to challenge the status quo? Glad you're here Joe
A2: Teachers sometimes collect it and not go over with it. Immediate feedback is crucial when learning about new concepts.
A2 it can be a useless waste of time that often really turns kids off to learning - like reading logs
Sorry I am late. Arina from Clarkston, MI.
My goodness... is it Sunday at 8:30am??? I see the entire crew in !
Love chatting with you two at the helm.
A2: There is a lot of frustration for Ps and Ss. It is not a positive outcome.
A2: Lack of oversight and access to necessary resources to make the learning meaningful.
A2 Many students don't need the same practice or time, it is usually a one size fits all waste
A2 Too much of it - not all kids need it - creates stress at home just for starters
A2: There's an antiquated belief that repetition breeds mastery...but we know now that this cannot be further from the truth.
A2: It boring! Ss who have support at home get it done and checked. Those who don't, may struggle with it and do it wrong.
A2 it is often graded and reinforced bad habits or misinformation
A2: You can usually google the answers for traditional HW, and is mostly just busy work...
A2: Not all students need it. And it's just plain boring.
Ss w/knowledge don't need it, those who don't get it are not going to understand by themselves.
I agree. Especially if pressed for time already.
A2. How many of us have watched our own children stay awake far later than is healthy for them? https://t.co/oHY84ggNtN
A2 The kids that need it don't do it and just get more zeros.
A2 Trad HW is mostly skill and drill-that is not the way to entice students to learn.
Exactly-if I know it why bother doing it again https://t.co/v3A3SvAQjo
A2: Ss who get the subject, don't need more practice. Ss who don't get more practice doing it wrong.
Thanks Carol. It takes a village :)
A2 Traditional homework is repetitive, which means it lacks creativity or spark.
Not all Ps can support all different kinds of subject areas in HW
A2 If you videotaped my kitchen table every night you would see the problem with traditional homework. 140 characters is not enough.
so true and I'm shaking my head in disgust now too... https://t.co/cjhTkT4U56
It can also be used as a "gotcha" rather than a "caughtya" - as in "caughtya" doing something good
And many are...then the one thing they NEED to do is read, and there is little energy left for that. https://t.co/b3tKzMgwuN
I agree. Especially if pressed for time already.
A2 I think problem with traditional homework is that it's mostly rote repetition & doesn't promote real student learning
yes and often they don't... we do things in their names, only to satisfy other entities https://t.co/Pra9AXMP6X
Yes, our audience is the reason why we teach ! Their needs must come first
A2 Yes, the strain of HW is causing stress instead of love of learning.
would prefer our Ss go outside & play or follow their passions-which I bet aren't doing HW https://t.co/Cjf2NTa2Ut
A2 it can be a useless waste of time that often really turns kids off to learning - like reading logs
Great point! What a wast when it happens ! https://t.co/BgGCDsBabb
A2: Teachers sometimes collect it and not go over with it. Immediate feedback is crucial when learning about new concepts.
it is rarely done in this way... we must reimagine it https://t.co/6i7jkV0sdd
I agree with this one. HW is not horrible, if and ONLY if given with student learning in mind. It can be good prep.
Especially, love the group project homework when none of the kids drive and so only one student does it.
I think this is key - what is needed is SPARK https://t.co/zK7lujOyAX
A2 Traditional homework is repetitive, which means it lacks creativity or spark.
His Ts hate me. Most of the HW is unnecessary. The memorization tasks are the worst.
the one thing I ask my students to do every night is to read.
A2 Traditional homework doesn't feed into learners' individuality - it's one homework fits all.
with homework though? I was a good Ss, very compliant, but I still didn't really like hw Did it because I had to
PREACH!!!! https://t.co/wQZOmjvRtX
A2 I think problem with traditional homework is that it's mostly rote repetition & doesn't promote real student learning
Yes, we talk about the necessity of play in Hacking Homework
Research does not support traditional HW for elem. grades
Required to give immediate feedback at our school if you choose to give it. https://t.co/cfgHdnW3Qs
Great point! What a wast when it happens ! https://t.co/BgGCDsBabb
A2: Teachers sometimes collect it and not go over with it. Immediate feedback is crucial when learning about new concepts.
REimagining HW is a way to invigorate learning.
A2 when Ss are passionate about learning they will take it on outside of school without us-focus on creating this passion
Maybe we should ask the question: "Would I want to be a student in my class?"
Nope and it barely does later too... it really has to be purposeful https://t.co/e8q0RjyWmU
Research does not support traditional HW for elem. grades
Q3: What are some ways we can use technology to rethink traditional homework?
that is really what we're hoping to do when we https://t.co/lbtMMYhjMg
REimagining HW is a way to invigorate learning.
It's like we WANT it to help students learn, so we just keep doing it. Drill and kill... https://t.co/MfY9307t1y
A2 I think problem with traditional homework is that it's mostly rote repetition & doesn't promote real student learning
: talks about this frequently when referring to student choice. Check him out!
have similar situations here-why we need Schools to be centers of community beyond 9-3
Hmmm...
Would I want to do this busy work? https://t.co/rFRHNeo3tm
Maybe we should ask the question: "Would I want to be a student in my class?"
A3: This gets difficult because not every Ss has access. I wish they did.
An important question for sure... or would we want our own children in it? https://t.co/8GC5NkqN22
Maybe we should ask the question: "Would I want to be a student in my class?"
A3: Love the idea of using Google Classroom;it's a way to access materials (and do flipped learning). Teachers can be students too!
Our Ss work hard at school all day - they need a break when they get home.
Retweeting Q3. https://t.co/o921gY3WNi
Q3: What are some ways we can use technology to rethink traditional homework?
A2 The ss feel forced worth HW. Build the environment where kids want to continue learning on their own by peaking their interests.
A3 Tech can be a great way to meet kids where they are. Think about us networking right now on a Twitter chat, why not for kids too?
A2) The key word is traditional. Home life of Ss is no longer traditional.
NO HW for elementary kids! Research supports this. Want to jump in? https://t.co/TvDm8vVyMq
kids are so stressed out these days. Since when do 9 year olds need to be working at homework for more than hour?… https://t.co/zmI2o9fmxP
A2 Yes, the strain of HW is causing stress instead of love of learning.
A3: We can have students collaborating on sites like Google Docs or Slides so they have support and can be creative
A3: We do suggest to parents to use websites and apps we use at school - like reflex and i-ready
A3 Tech is really good for flipped classrooms and for student creativity. If we meet them where they are, we can make it useful
A3 ask Ss to blog about their lives-or create passion projects that Ss want to do https://t.co/2aG5cYMtOq
Q3: What are some ways we can use technology to rethink traditional homework?
A3: Use it to be build a network for feedback. Ss readily take advantage of Google doc sharing for immediate and guided feedback.
Challenge is when there is no access to tech at home
A3 Tech is also a great collaboration tool. Let's foster that with our kids and develop critical thinkers who can work w each other
A2) No quiet place in house to do hw. Many Ss have responsibilities outside school.
I agree. Love what Ss bring in for 'homework' when they get to choose.
A3. We used SuccessMaker w/ Ss @ home. Specific to exact skills they need in gap areas. Achievement soared!
I really think this way too. Go play a game with your Ps, read a recipe, curl up with a book and a parent. https://t.co/p1tSvy2KW7
Our Ss work hard at school all day - they need a break when they get home.
A3 MORE screen time after school? Then just let kids play outside, draw, dance, whatever. When, oh when, do kids power off?
Flip HW-encourage Ss 2 notice/wonder more-check out to explore ideas-bring them in next day to discuss
Reflection is really what causes the learning to sink in. Didn't Dewey say something like this? https://t.co/512jXdn0lu
A3 ask Ss to blog about their lives-or create passion projects that Ss want to do https://t.co/2aG5cYMtOq
Q3: What are some ways we can use technology to rethink traditional homework?
exactly-its not "HW" when follow something we are excited about-its authentic learning https://t.co/GRI3Rc0RGD
I agree. Love what Ss bring in for 'homework' when they get to choose.
Yes. We have strong reading program that emphasizes lifelong reading skills. kids read from 10-30+ books/year
Many of mine still do not have access at home. https://t.co/gTAW8R88Zn
Challenge is when there is no access to tech at home
A3 Blogging is a great way to develop voice and authentic audience and kids like it
I hear that. Most of my Ss don't have access at home. https://t.co/Z3lffdZHpQ
Challenge is when there is no access to tech at home
Not necessarily more... but this question poses different. How could we shift time on screens to learning? https://t.co/HDmw9nQfXQ
A3 MORE screen time after school? Then just let kids play outside, draw, dance, whatever. When, oh when, do kids power off?
A3 Choice is a way to encourage Ss to learn at home.
A 3 A flipped classroom. Homework becomes an introduction of a new concept plus generation of questions for discussion in class
https://t.co/65R0otRo9y
A3 MORE screen time after school? Then just let kids play outside, draw, dance, whatever. When, oh when, do kids power off?
A3) The home life of Ss have changed socioeconomically. Ts need to recognize, realize, & respond appropriately conniehamilton
A3. So what if Ss Choose to do something on their own? I get excited about that! Just happened last week
By helping Ss find access to tech, it would better prepare them for future careers
A3: Use collaborative tools to give immediate feedback/peer 2 peer feedback
Middle school and older, yes. Hard for the littles to get to a library. https://t.co/hZhK4lfMHc
Agreed, but we an certainly teach kids to use local libraries and not require tech but use it where there is access… https://t.co/4tCekww0HQ
A3 We need to remember that tech is sometimes used for traditional homework. A worksheet on an iPad is still a worksheet.
A2) A3) The home life of Ss have changed socioeconomically. Ts need to recognize, realize, & respond appropriately
absolutely! https://t.co/7LPQB3Y5ex
Flip HW-encourage Ss 2 notice/wonder more-check out to explore ideas-bring them in next day to discuss
A3: Flipped learning maybe ?
Truth! https://t.co/jDsXyRXjwp
A3 We need to remember that tech is sometimes used for traditional homework. A worksheet on an iPad is still a worksheet.
We need to find a way to help them... school borrowed tools? Libraries? Never mandatory
Twitter has been a game changer for me and for my students .... a perfect forum for connection. https://t.co/W2t3BRzBcL
Hispanic Heritage Month...about 7 found info and pics on the country we're studying
Oh no! This is what we're up against :( Good luck https://t.co/39W9G16VI4
sorry... trying to help my 7th grader get caught up on his HW cause he missed a week!
A3 I give students optional creative challenges instead of homework & collaborate w/ them via social media! https://t.co/3R4HjFtUPE
part 2 I teach 2nd - they can't go anywhere on their own
I really wish all my Ss could use their at home. https://t.co/vWzkjyOase
A3 Blogging is a great way to develop voice and authentic audience and kids like it
My 10 yr old today, "if it wasn't for homework, I wouldn't hate school." 8 hours of school & 1+hr of homework. Insane
A3) Allow cell phones & portable devices in the classroom. Communicate through web forums
A3 The feeling of seeing ss continue learning on their own without being told is amazing. Have you ever felt that w/ assigning HW?
If they're going to be online anyway, great idea to shift conversation to learning.
Q4:What are some authentic ways learning occurs outside the classroom (not talking worksheets here)?
A3 Kids use devices for fun anyway. An online review game that they can do at home is a great homework.
A3) There is an app that allows Ss to record answers w video and upload to classroom account
No judgments, I just find it interesting how most bemoan HW, but the moment tech is mentioned, everyone has all these great HW ideas
I encourage my Ps to check my class twitter and introduced them to .
A2) They tell adults, "Don't bring your work home" so why don't kids get the same opportunity to develop themselves in other ways?
retweetin Q4 https://t.co/VlERtp0fZh
Q4:What are some authentic ways learning occurs outside the classroom (not talking worksheets here)?
A3) Recap allows Ss to upload responses via. video to class account
A4 by just going places & talking about what you see/did-even the store is more relevant than a worksheet https://t.co/XvjHiwv9K2
Q4:What are some authentic ways learning occurs outside the classroom (not talking worksheets here)?
A4: An example: In Science, Have the students record moon phases or abiotic/biotic factors. This connects to the concepts more.
Love it. Build something, draw, write, anything. https://t.co/E3LI1JnDCX
I really think this way too. Go play a game with your Ps, read a recipe, curl up with a book and a parent. https://t.co/p1tSvy2KW7
Our Ss work hard at school all day - they need a break when they get home.
So true. Crazy how we ask a 10 year old to attend school for 6-7 hours, then go home and "work" some more. https://t.co/Zk6PyjmnDA
A2) They tell adults, "Don't bring your work home" so why don't kids get the same opportunity to develop themselves in other ways?
A4 authentic learning happens everywhere-around a boardgame, cooking dinner, playing games outside, sports, practicing an instrument
Is it the traditional = worksheet HW that is opposed? https://t.co/cxWgbSghyv
No judgments, I just find it interesting how most bemoan HW, but the moment tech is mentioned, everyone has all these great HW ideas
A4: Ps taking them to places - museums, libraries, parks, etc.
I agree that tech can separate Ss by socioeconomic class, I hope we'll be able to find ways to give affordable access
Our vision isn't about banishing homework, it's about rethinking it.
My son is currently tracking moon phases, lol https://t.co/fyzbk4PTes
A4: An example: In Science, Have the students record moon phases or abiotic/biotic factors. This connects to the concepts more.
yes and even going to the grocery store can be a learning experience https://t.co/vO0tifRaDn
A4: Ps taking them to places - museums, libraries, parks, etc.
A4: Travel, theatre arts, science expos, QUALITY READING, food experimentation, discourse, dog walking, I could go on :)
is the book out? If so I am ordering this week!
A4 Yes, Leah. Worksheets are old school. Bring in the relevant work with tech at aid.
Yea.. well my HS son is doing Week 5 vocab words. JOYFUL. https://t.co/Y2BUFDiRnN
My son is currently tracking moon phases, lol https://t.co/fyzbk4PTes
A4: An example: In Science, Have the students record moon phases or abiotic/biotic factors. This connects to the concepts more.
A4 Reading, reading, reading. It should be choice & passion driven. It supports all subjects. It inspires, enlightens, & emboldens!
A4: 1 of our HS teachers had his class live tweeting to their hashtag during the debate last week. Loved it
A4: Talk about your learning. I send home the skills and questions to chat about.
Looking toward the future traditional schools will only be filling part of a Ss day - learning will be ongoing @ home, community
A4: Students don't have to sit at the kitchen table with a task assigned from their teachers to be learning. https://t.co/wNnRPOwn3Q
which one... to do it just because we did it? I didn't think you felt that way
My physician wheels around an iPad I yelled at him to put it away as he is setting a poor example 4 traditional learning 😂😂😂😂
challenge with HW is how do we prepare Ss for college-where so much is done outside class
I get that - I guess, but definitely a mindset we need to help adjust or reconsider
that is AWESOME!!! I will definitely promote and share with everyone I know! Can't wait to read it!
My days of homework didn't truly prepare me for that. I think that is a myth. https://t.co/VvgreF9ewR
challenge with HW is how do we prepare Ss for college-where so much is done outside class
A4 Learning happens everywhere whether we assign it or not. Trips, museums, observations in parks, creations of something.
this makes me want to cry as an English teacher https://t.co/uDyhf69xJj
Yea.. well my HS son is doing Week 5 vocab words. JOYFUL. https://t.co/Y2BUFDiRnN
My son is currently tracking moon phases, lol https://t.co/fyzbk4PTes
A4: An example: In Science, Have the students record moon phases or abiotic/biotic factors. This connects to the concepts more.
A4: Encourage students to volunteer. Great learning experiences, great way to grow !
A4 Authentic way to learn outside school: Find a wonder to discuss w/ family using . Follow-up optional to build knowl
It may be time for all of us to start our own school... one that does it all differently
A4: So much learning happens through play...imagine if families had more time to engage in play with their kids, no matter the age?
"joyful" is that a Starr word? It's new to my daily conversations.
we need 2 admit that Ss have challenge beyond K-12 as far as being self-motivated to complete work-how do we address
I use it like I use "special"! euphemisms
A3 Gaming is a great way to encourage Ss to dig deeper into learning.
Q5: How can we support activities students engage in at home that inspire learning?
HI Glad to see you in . You've been such a great supporter. Thanks for your contributions.
A4) Engage Ss to research, examine, investigate, and design. Make learning experiences active and authentic
Ps need to look at their own schedules and make time for their kids
it's time to reimagine school... not just homework and grading
A4: Getting to go outside the 4 walls and being in any different environment can be a learning experience
thanks... I may take you up on that. A good friend of mine made the suggestion today
Retweeting Q5. https://t.co/f3pnDOjlEt
Q5: How can we support activities students engage in at home that inspire learning?
A5: Have family members involved. Going back to Science ex. in A4. Have someone help record observations outside. Join the fun!
Q4 engage in what interests THEM, Problem solving, building things, karate, scouts, reading, cooking experiments, making art/videos
A5: Use our home to school communication to give resources, ideas, suggestions.
A5 Why not tie in expectations to what students are doing already? They are practicing and building skills all over the place
A5: Give Ss opportunities to share what they learned at home w/other Ss
A4 Geocaching isa great family activity to encourage exploration, discovery, collaboration. Find geocaching on
A4 I promote students creative curiosities-it leads to authentic learning outside class & often a passion! https://t.co/4CxrMFovpf
A5: By incorporating the chance to involve social media or taking selfies with something they observe can peak their interests
I like the idea of activities outside the building...volunteering...getting parents involved
A5: need to find something that interests them that can be incorporated in learning goal
A4 All fine examples of learning outside school that is relevant.
So many learning connections to be made with these activities. https://t.co/aZ4Y1tcSjD
I like the idea of activities outside the building...volunteering...getting parents involved
A5: Find ways to value Ss individual interests and maybe go to some things... Recitals, performance, games, etc
A5: Celebrate the great things they do. Get students to share what they are doing st home
Global School Play Day Reminds Us Of The Importance of Play - Work in Progress - Education Week Teacher https://t.co/GmoGLulIOY
A5: Love the tweets here about reflection, journaling or blogging about conversations from class today can help imprint for learning
You can go to museums that have evening events...I think over the weekends too for Ss and parents
yes! https://t.co/TkhVch0rpq
Know our students and build projects and lessons around our students' hobbies, interests and families.
A5 We can connect specific learning targets to these activites by asking ss to notice, calculate, or solve something while at them
Yes, we're familiar with and his thoughts on homework. He's very articulate on the subject. https://t.co/LvgNr95Clr
A5) Extend learning beyond the classroom. Have Ss find a connection between academic topic and real world
A5 Collaborate w colleagues/ create authentic HOME work initiative that's creative, offers choice,is engaging. REAd-Write-Imagine
Q6: How can we address pushback we might get if a shift in how we think about homework is proposed?
A5 I love HW Dinner Table Discussions, where Ss moderate a family convo about a class concept & report back results & responses.
Not much more to add to that! https://t.co/RFx8OayYv2
A5) Extend learning beyond the classroom. Have Ss find a connection between academic topic and real world
A6: Encourage and Support. Tell the concerned stakeholders that we are trying new things and new things can be better for all.
A5 The key is being real & connecting w/ students on a personal level-that trust allows teachers to support their outside learning
A6: Have discussions that cause reflection on purpose and benefits.
If work at home is not relevant & meaningful, then why should we give it?
A6 It's so important for us to keep our focus on S learning and not on bad policy. What is working? How do we know?
A6: Explain your thinking. Share research.
A6: Refer to the research !
A6: Be proactive. When S success is obvious, people will ask what you're doing and model after it.
A6: Be transparent about why one wants the shift, does not think the tradit. model works, discuss
A6: Always bring the conversation back to kids. We are there for them...not the other way around.
Catered to individual needs, I would add. https://t.co/KdTYcWF8Wn
