All the peeps are coming out of the woodwork tonight, I love it
i did feel a shift in the force
Awesome! Would love your insights tonight Eric
A1: It looks messy, but totally invested in people, students, and adjusts to their needs and goals
Lisa!! So glad you're here!
A1 A place where Ts are learning, too!
A1 Students asking questions, empowered to find answers and develop written and physical representations fo their discovs.
Hey Eric! Just gotta say, your kids are adorable! & how long has he been wearing that hat?
Hi .. the carpet person (Mrs says it’s time to replace) just left..
ugh I wish! grad school owns me til December. Miss my people
So cool! Where are you sharing the movies? https://t.co/Uemyy81SCb
My innovative self is trying to do 1 movie a week of my Ss to celebrate what we are doing!
A1: innovative schools focus on teamwork, problem solving, being nimble/open and having fun! https://t.co/aXavGCQQWQ
A1 busy students with smiles
Welcome! We love new members! Thanks for joining tonight
No excuses, mama! My homework was due at 5pm and next assignment due tomorrow at 11pm - you can skip an hour ;-)
It's probably been about 9 months! And thanks-I think they are pretty adorable too
I share them on the learning platform for kids and twitter - will post one.
Agreed. I have not experienced anything that works as well as developing comfort with giving and receiving feedback.
A1: A culture adjusting to meet the needs of Ss and Ts? I'm not sure about this - haven't thought of innovative culture before :)
A1: different grade levels playing and learning in the same spaces
I'm hearing messy, invested, responsive, lots of learning, empowerment, questions, critical friends - sounds like a great place!
A1: innovative school culture teaches students to care, grow, and learn by any means necessary
A1 Where Learners R challenged & encouraged 2 do things differently when it the opportunity aries There is time 4 deeperlearning
A1: An acceptance an of risk by Ts and Ss. An innovative culture makes all feel supported to try something new/better
Oh noo! Tell them this should be for credit!
last time I checked, frowny faces weren't learning faces
With leaders, who can lead and manage. There's a difference.
A1 Agree, and safety to be vulnerable, experiment, and fail, and try again https://t.co/Och998teey
A1: A culture adjusting to meet the needs of Ss and Ts? I'm not sure about this - haven't thought of innovative culture before :)
A1: As would say, and tie in 2 ACT, Acceptance, Communication, & Trust. https://t.co/MnJpuDSzl4
I'm hearing messy, invested, responsive, lots of learning, empowerment, questions, critical friends - sounds like a great place!
A1 By definition, wouldn't innovative school culture have to diverge from whatever's been done before in given context? 1/2
Yes! I wish there was so much more of this! https://t.co/JRL858oggS
A1: different grade levels playing and learning in the same spaces
I don’t know I sure learned from frowny faces
A1: innovative school cultures support t's as learners as much as students as learners and give t's opportunity to model learning
wow, you are both rockstars!
A1: It's Divergent: the team works towards empowering others in a human centered approach while making the adjacent possible
A1: innovative schools look like Ss' have shared voice and choice
A1.2 Would incessant standardized testing count as innovative (not to mention anathema) in a Waldorf setting? 2/2
I like it. Playing with the ways learning spaces can influence outcomes.
A1: Innovative culture is culture that works, however it needs to - innovate until it works for ALL!
Hmm would this answer depend on the definition of “innovation”?
Hm, would it? That's a good question https://t.co/Tvktywvvc2
A1 By definition, wouldn't innovative school culture have to diverge from whatever's been done before in given context? 1/2
sorry if i already missed tweet. where did you grow up? I’m born and raised here too. Think about leaving, but tuf.
You can do it!!! But I miss you all the same! ;-)
A2 Always keeping the end user in mind when approaching almost everything
https://t.co/83LurTUZR5
A1: As would say, and tie in 2 ACT, Acceptance, Communication, & Trust. https://t.co/MnJpuDSzl4
I'm hearing messy, invested, responsive, lots of learning, empowerment, questions, critical friends - sounds like a great place!
When schools have a bias for action I think teachers feel empowered.
also what school are you connected with?
A2: Design implies a user and a need - so to design culture is to work intentionally and strategically to meet users' needs
I really like this! Any tips for making it happen in practice? https://t.co/NDrlmKCVxs
A1: It's Divergent: the team works towards empowering others in a human centered approach while making the adjacent possible
A2: Switch it:School culture creates opportunities 2design, make, explore, wonder, &question-culture creates conditions 4learning
Embracing diversity and cognitive dissent as a strength might be a big cultural shift in some work environments
Yeah 2 me innovation is subjective I say if U do a thing 1 way one day & a different way the next your innovative
I grew up in e bay, Walnut Creek. Used to think of Marin as the promised land. Lived in & around city, but not marin
A2: Designing culture implies a "gap" - how might we "mind the gap" and create culture rather than let it create itself?
For real thinking about leaving?? ?
I wonder how we can help make that happen?
A2: Empathy. Colleagues listen to each other's stories and hear latent need. Then they seek to design based on needs.
Reminder to follow any new folks you meet tonight on the chat.
I'm w/Ashley. Empathetic qualities of effective design speak to me & could hold power for shaping culture constructively
A2: Design can improve awareness and sensitivity through thoughtful empathy practice
A2 In school where D matters ppl come first. DT=human heuristic 4 Prob. find/slv. Ergo, relationships thrive, Comm. rules!
A2: design helps schools practice creative thinking, give all a voice and plan with a purpose.
A2 School is part of real world. Learning has relevance.
Big might be an understatement https://t.co/dpJpe5XNAj
Embracing diversity and cognitive dissent as a strength might be a big cultural shift in some work environments
Listening purposely FOR that latent need, with an idea of locating it - I like that!
constructive and purposeful = words of the day https://t.co/LVLrWy0iU7
I'm w/Ashley. Empathetic qualities of effective design speak to me & could hold power for shaping culture constructively
Thx 4 the intro 2 Met w/him Monday. Awesome person and awesome convo. Attending his event on Sa.
I think this mind set transfers into the way people socially interact in schools.
1 design piece that sticks w/me is iteration; I'd want next day to reflect intentional change connected to prior day
As always says-start with a real problem, end with an audience
Howdy! Here learning after long conf day!
I’ll have 2 check it out. Was it hard 4 u to leave?
I saw that. Wish I could attend, 2. Be great to meet you both in person.
Don’t U love have that those roots are embedded?
create systems; team practices specific beliefs/habits to frame the culture; ex. using specific interview Qs that align
A3: Check assumptions at the door - ask WHY and keep asking - don't assume you're empathizing if you haven't asked
A3: we have s's working with local architects designing structures for a festival this weekend https://t.co/0BwVxHzKZL
beliefs like empowering others must be embedded in practice; pedagogy, hiring, etc.
A3 Bake in time for reflection/deliberation: Where've we been? How's it going? Now what? That thinking can feed next cyclic steps
This looks like a great project.
A3 trust students to show what they know
Evening ! Hoping to be here for a bit to soak in your awesomeness and get recharged!
I think time & depth 4 iteration is 1 of the most neglected areas of DT + Learning in schools https://t.co/JJS1o9tnGN
1 design piece that sticks w/me is iteration; I'd want next day to reflect intentional change connected to prior day
It's tremendous-so much learning!
A3: create a shared system: Mindsets, language+use design methods in every class across all disciplines https://t.co/KUIHvwzUzV
Would love to ping you more about that! We're just diving into SLCs
It would be interesting to reimagine the hiring process.
Great! Glad to have you Kate
Very nice is that your space at the school?
A3: Ask students if they really CARE about what their learning. Design LXs that empower.
Love the emphasis on iteration - that is hard for me, but so important
A3: I feel the first move is bringing Ss' learning to the world they live in. Obsv the world w/honesty
got to speak to Larry Rosenstock this past summer; amazing process ask
Way better-a warehouse not to far away. But I'd love for it to become the school
I loved the shared language and a powerful visual that can bring everyone together https://t.co/qYmsAZhROI
A3: create a shared system: Mindsets, language+use design methods in every class across all disciplines https://t.co/KUIHvwzUzV
Wow!! I did that over 20 years ago at my old high school.
If you Dream it… it will become!
Iterative ethos is largely antithetical to curriculum-coverage model, yes? Not mutually exclusive, but tension.
yes / we use a method called Rose/Thorn/Bud and What's On Your Radar for that!
We had a few of the HTH head out our way last September. Learned a lot from that crew.
A3 slow down! All my kids seem so rushed. Observation precedes all Quality ovr Quantity. Depth breeds T-shaped students
My 1st yr here w/ e-portfolios. Talk about empowering Ss, & giving them voice!
And there's a for https://t.co/U6rqkXKIBs
A3: I feel the first move is bringing Ss' learning to the world they live in. Obsv the world w/honesty
As much as we hate to do things b/c we've always done them, traditions = culture - HMW reset traditions to emphasize user/design?
A3: how familiar are we of our Ss perspective? Design requires openness and willingness to shift on the fly
I ❤ metaphors. https://t.co/2FIBGQ3gP0
yes / we use a method called Rose/Thorn/Bud and What's On Your Radar for that!
A3 So true! https://t.co/ZQ7mJLS5qL
Iterative ethos is largely antithetical to curriculum-coverage model, yes? Not mutually exclusive, but tension.
Embedding iteration and feedback loops helps build that culture of high quality work.
A3 I believe intentional framing & scaffolding, Common Language, nurturing a culture of building from scratch
I really want to find a way to do some HTH PD or at least visit!!
I just answered A4 and didn't even know it https://t.co/Rbu4DAFDgw
As much as we hate to do things b/c we've always done them, traditions = culture - HMW reset traditions to emphasize user/design?
So rushed! slow things down? What can we do to affect change in pace and scheduling? https://t.co/LYjb2blSdm
A3 slow down! All my kids seem so rushed. Observation precedes all Quality ovr Quantity. Depth breeds T-shaped students
Next year possibly for me. Heading to conference this year.
"This is design?" "You're soaking in it!" -- D=smooth hands! (ok, Old Palmolive Commercial. Sorry.
I'm going!!!! Ahhhhh!!! Looking like February with
I love talking to them in the am to get to know them. And then their fam in SLCs.
show Ss how design can change their communities - make it real + relevant to engage them in learning https://t.co/Nh36PdZirv
More Depth, Less Breadth Focus on Skills Not Content Content is Googlable Learn what is not Googlable
I know it! https://t.co/CUbVVrVl5n
"This is design?" "You're soaking in it!" -- D=smooth hands! (ok, Old Palmolive Commercial. Sorry.
A4: One way to look at culture is too reimagine professional learning.
A4 Ss & I talked recently about ideal learning spaces, HMW bring ours closer to our visions. https://t.co/v4diDFSZE1
Hi ! Ela excited to here from Cambridge, after bedtimes (again :).
A3: Making it part each process: designing a maker space to growing food for local food pantry https://t.co/VRKf8AMJYv
I just used this very one ! On a Padlet!
for this bit of retro genius https://t.co/ldIWnFVnQJ
"This is design?" "You're soaking in it!" -- D=smooth hands! (ok, Old Palmolive Commercial. Sorry.
my Ss just did empathy interviews with me on Class redesign--I talked abt skills over content
Yes, and which pieces of professional learning would you start with? How might we reimagine it? https://t.co/xAGKxv22ot
A4: One way to look at culture is too reimagine professional learning.
Yes! We might see how the structures/schedules adults have created for Ss is keeping them from truly learning.
A4: HMW welcome new students and demonstrate our expectations for them? Hope helps me answer this soon ;-)
Those tires are fabulous! Are they for a playground?
A4 Throw it back N2 their face 4Ex HW- UR an “innovative” School yet your HW is content memorization Recess: Um hello? Styrofoam?
I like your topic, - HMW use creative/critical to improve school culture? For example...
HMW “make it better” with DT in ? “Designing our Future” is theme of California STEM Symposium!
A4: Last yr. colleague had kids watch the MS hallways in btwn classes to see what they noticed. Big ah-ha for some Ss.
yes - Ss got a grant and partnered with 2 community org's to build an outdoor classroom for neighborhood kids!
A4: HMW define citizenship to create balance in representation for all citizens?
A4 use their words, their Mission, Connect it to what really is going on Does the Culture Match the Experience?
if only "curriculum coverage" would be replaced with a more strategic use of core standards
Love this - hold the mirror up!
Hi friends, popping in for a minute while I wait for my colleague to send me our wordpress login...
This is def an area for us to grow in as educators. Working hard at this one this year! https://t.co/uMD2XQcMKy
A4: One way to look at culture is too reimagine professional learning.
Ts powered PD + planning/collab time, we have 3 hours for all Ts weekly for CPL (CoLab professional learning)
Closing the gap between what we say is happening and what is actually happening is a great place to focus.
once Ss are more connected w/their world, the more meaningful the learning will be
So instead of a teacher, I am the “lead learner!” https://t.co/AAf9V2K7Dg
Might we subtract the word
'professional' from this query? What would happen if we distinguished less between T &… https://t.co/WjrtpLlXaT
A4: One way to look at culture is too reimagine professional learning.
What he said. learning = learning = learning https://t.co/VrVu6RWnqr
Might we subtract the word
'professional' from this query? What would happen if we distinguished less between T &… https://t.co/WjrtpLlXaT
A4: One way to look at culture is too reimagine professional learning.
My goal this year is to shift the mindset that we are learners too! https://t.co/bQhAyNceZm
Yes, and which pieces of professional learning would you start with? How might we reimagine it? https://t.co/xAGKxv22ot
A4: One way to look at culture is too reimagine professional learning.
My hypothesis is some disciplines are more attached to 'coverage' than others, or maybe it's some Ts?
community action https://t.co/jK0vhs0Wct
yes - Ss got a grant and partnered with 2 community org's to build an outdoor classroom for neighborhood kids!
Yay! Happy to have your pop-in and thoughts on innovation + design + culture :)
help them feel your culture, have fun..help them transition via classes dedicated to onboarding + advisory
Crushing it with this. https://t.co/XIB9zchi2N
Closing the gap between what we say is happening and what is actually happening is a great place to focus.
A4) ask students "what changes in our school culture would you like to see?" and then "HMW make these changes?"
HMW get grown-ups to see the world honestly? And see ourselves honestly? https://t.co/eRYfC2D3Zt
A3: I feel the first move is bringing Ss' learning to the world they live in. Obsv the world w/honesty
and once their school connects with them, on their terms, the more meaningful and empowered they will be.
3 hours common time?! I'm cryin' all the way to Pburg. Wonderful. https://t.co/LoUHp6ZCKa
Ts powered PD + planning/collab time, we have 3 hours for all Ts weekly for CPL (CoLab professional learning)
Yes! Ask kids: what do you want your school to look like? What classes do you want? https://t.co/8fyMpOypLM
A4) ask students "what changes in our school culture would you like to see?" and then "HMW make these changes?"
Or room's full of potential Ts :)
how do you create this culture in a standardized testing system? The bigger question is HMW get Ss to love to learn?
What abt just Co-Learners? Im not saying UR acting like a Sage I like hashtags
We sure can learn a lot about the places in which we work from conversations about the user experience.
A5 it's impossible to "innovate' without the support of school leadership at least in some capacity
Very big ... and important question. https://t.co/LtPwChBiXl
HMW get grown-ups to see the world honestly? And see ourselves honestly? https://t.co/eRYfC2D3Zt
A3: I feel the first move is bringing Ss' learning to the world they live in. Obsv the world w/honesty
yep they also get another 3-4 hours either on Tuesday or Weds when our Ss are at work
Hey - send kids to baby! https://t.co/Rvc3tjWT8o
how do you create this culture in a standardized testing system? The bigger question is HMW get Ss to love to learn?
A5: Leaders model DT in everything they do. This spreads to staff and risk taking begins bc they feel supported. We hope...
A5: Ts need to capitalize on the agency they have in their own classrooms. Seize that. Let your Ss lead.
And what does "innovate" mean? I find it so vague sometimes...
A5: Priorities of leadership affect priorities of all, for better or worse
Just got home, so I'm popping into waaaay late to see what's up.
yes, "close gap between what we say is happening and what is actually happening" by using Reality Checks.
question that we must all be asking ourselves daily https://t.co/jYTrLpEeS2
HMW get grown-ups to see the world honestly? And see ourselves honestly? https://t.co/eRYfC2D3Zt
A3: I feel the first move is bringing Ss' learning to the world they live in. Obsv the world w/honesty
probably a "learning style" gone awry
A5: I think transparency is critical. Looping us back to comfort with feedback across the system.
And maybe even re-evaluate the value of APs and SATs ..
HMW validate leaders' opinions based on the positive people, not the negative 20%?
I knew I would bait a shark w that ?
We're all going to come work there ;) https://t.co/18QEwQGZCM
yep they also get another 3-4 hours either on Tuesday or Weds when our Ss are at work
Must start with innovative mindset from admin to be systemic IMHO https://t.co/JjYRTZvZY5
A5 it's impossible to "innovate' without the support of school leadership at least in some capacity
Can someone pls retweet Q5 ?
A5: I also believe that U can lead from anywhere or any position. Leadership can support that work or B intimidated by it.
Side-Note as an 80s pub/Pri school kid I hated teaching style yet I remember so much content In college Choice made difference
A5 I need to do a better job of sharing with my adm in hopes it will lead to DT approaches for school goals & planning.
Yes! I've been looking at OKRs and tools like to try and make that transparency happen this year https://t.co/Q3acvrMY4K
A5: I think transparency is critical. Looping us back to comfort with feedback across the system.
agreed, let's say it means flexibility, open to define and try new things
I feel like that's different for every school yet there are some baseline things we can all share
A5: My first principal was/is a true leader. Always asking, "What's next?" She expected growth in her Ss and Ts. It matters. Big.
Perfect timing! Thanks for joining Martin
Agreed! change that? What do we need to better define/clarify it? https://t.co/hAHt510KMT
And what does "innovate" mean? I find it so vague sometimes...
A5: Transparency, honesty, trust. Back 2 ACT Gotta have Acceptance, Communication (honest & transparent) & trust!
yes, "conversations [empathy interviews?] about user experience" can be Reality Checks, help Ts see things from Ss POV.
Coverage works 4 some. (Worked for me as K12 S if being honest.) From view now, ceiling feels too low.
innovative culture is grown by every single member of the community from Ts, to parents to support staff.. About mindset.
maybe we need a more specific word, and retire this one :)
Feeling it 1st hand. Living w a sched that predates dinosaurs that may hinder learning for Ts & Ss. Hard to break free.
I had Cur Director she always came 2 our planning meetings w/ @ least 5 ideas 2 share Never left us holding the bag
didn't work for me: I'm a big picture and thematic sort of thinker
A5 Leaders can chart vision & set goals, yet encourage & support many routes to any destination.
Or...a rose by any other name would smell as sweet. "Innovation is as innovation does."
Systemically, having someone w/the responsibility to coordinate change across the system is essential.
positive teacher is extreme user?
Ooh, creative thinking! Any suggestions? https://t.co/eT6qq1hjMD
maybe we need a more specific word, and retire this one :)
Empathetic approach to problem solving, being ok w multiple iterations, connecting w/ stake holders to eval plans.
yes, encourage Ss to "bring learning to world they live in" to build bridges between school & their whole life.
I have to log off early tonight. Time to read some bedtime stories. Thanks for a great .
feel compelled to share that the most "innovative" learning doesn't have to happen "in school." https://t.co/pO5QlddhS5
+100 https://t.co/afiimuPjR7
innovative culture is grown by every single member of the community from Ts, to parents to support staff.. About mindset.
A6 if I see a crack I am going to offer my idea
in our world, yes... tbh, we also added "negative teacher" & "innovative leader" after pic was taken
A6: I left. What does that say? ;)
A6: I left. What does that say? ;)
Do you have someone like that at your school (you?)? How can schools get there? https://t.co/svgKFygzfI
Systemically, having someone w/the responsibility to coordinate change across the system is essential.
A6 I *pursued* my school b/c of its culture, but plan to beat the drum for science research PD
you creepin'? I miss your face!
Wait, innovate doesn't mean 'do stuff via screens connected to the Internet'? ;)
And when they are NOT interested in change, you leave.
A6: using design to build strategic plan is our biggest project and also within all courses part of
Thanks ! You filled my bucket like always! Have to get back to work but will def check tom for what I missed!
Yes! And instead you're helping to influence culture across the whole Twitterverse
coordinate and support like our amazing
A6: Using platform to try to scale PD changes to district level from school
Thanks for joining & sharing Reagan. Have a great night!
My dist. did that in 1994. Our current success is direct result of DT over 20 years ago.
Good to hear! I'll try to Storify to share after
A6: Trying to strategically plan opportunities for grade levels to collaborate to further influence culture
nice!! We are three years old and it's our second iteration already! Quick and nimble = success
A6 Trying online DT course w/colleague as we eye possibilities for 8th-grade community service effort https://t.co/IffU4gbNTx
yes, "innovative [and personally useful] learning" for students should happen "in school" and outside.
I'm counting your "Yes, ands" 😘
How’s it going? do you like the platform?
A6 "YOU Oriented Collaborative Design" studio (parallel to big class User Oriented Collab. Design) for T's as well as S's this yr
A8 Like I said before, I’m soaking in it!
Too many schools only have admins who are so subject to the tyranny of the urgent that they don't get the time/space 2 be leaders
A8 Jump on 24/7 when in need I don’t believe U will find yourself on an island Culture Trumps Content
True and sad. https://t.co/o3XxQ081b7
Too many schools only have admins who are so subject to the tyranny of the urgent that they don't get the time/space 2 be leaders
A6 Hoping to repurpose interviews for immigration unit to focus on empathy, listening to understand, perhaps to generate service.
A8 Any Peeps to check my blog and write to my Ss when you have time. Trnsprncy & Feedback so key thnx
Going ok in theory & sparking thinking in practice. I'm not using platform to its fullest (yet). Other priorities.
A8: I need patience. Resilience. Confidence. Easy, right?
I wonder if you can find some primary sources Immigration (past & present) is a DT Unit
Sounds like a great project! Please update us as you start the unit, I want to hear all about it! https://t.co/T8YSryiggm
A6 Hoping to repurpose interviews for immigration unit to focus on empathy, listening to understand, perhaps to generate service.
A8: Continued support from
Yes, and think it's hard to change/fix that after it happens. Hm, ...
A8 As Ts our plates are full but admins have same burden
Leading Ts different game than leading Ss - so much the same, & yet... advice & support welcome, also long walks on the beach
Proud to say my school () has created positions that are designed to encourage thoughtful leadership.
A8 What she said .. :) https://t.co/MTOFKVTgIh
Leading Ts different game than leading Ss - so much the same, & yet... advice & support welcome, also long walks on the beach
We have always interviewed new citizens in our community. Simply retold their story. HMW use their stories for action?
yes & no I wonder the Why
A8 I would love ideas, resources & time to chat w/people about innovation roles (my new job!) & ways to leverage them for deep DT
In my experience, it takes an aligned vision, serious trust and a crazy amount of transparency.
yes, unfortunate tensions can occur between "tyranny of the URGENT" and leadership in the IMPORTANT.
A8: The Justice League Hangouts and learning
Yes, please! I could use that today, if you have time ;)
So, returning to where we started, Margaret, what does innovation mean to you in your new job?
Hi - what did I miss?! ;)
I believe school day is too long for Ss & Ts
This is a great community. TY for allowing me to join in!
I would certainly like to hear more about this. Thank you .
what did we miss from your dinner?!?
Everything The secret to this whole mumbo jumbo
Another wonderful hour of conversations have flown by! Thanks to everyone for such thoughtful discussions tonight!
hopefully i can at least be a fly on the wall in one of these chats sometime. ;)
As currently constructed, I agree. I would not advocate for more time for prevailing structures/efforts/paradigms.
