#6thchat is used to chat, collaborate, and grow with other sixth grade educators from around the globe. Each session we discuss a topic voted on by #6thchat participants. It's a great way to help grow your PLN and share ideas with others.
Welcome to #6thchat! Please introduce yourself and where you teach, and what subjects. I am Kristin and will moderate tonight's chat. I teach ELA and SS in Lansing, MI.
A1)Use docs to write collaborative stories or responses. Easy to put Ss into groups & have them insert tables with info, images, or other responses. I also have some of my Ss use the voice to text options on a google doc to help them answer questions or finish writing. #6thchat
A1: Docs is a go-to app for me. It is easy to use and allows for great writing, collaborating, and exploring
One of the cooler features I have come across recently is the voice typing for Ss who may have trouble writing out ideas
#6thchat
A1: I have been doing some work with HyperDocs to give Ss the ability to work at their own pace through different tasks around content. I have not implemented them fully, but being able to add hyperlinks to videos, material, and graphic organizers is a game changer. #6thchat
I think the trick on the hyperdocs is to make sure it isn't too cumbersome and provides added value. I look back on some of mine and think how to make them better now. Always improving that. #6thchat
A2) I use Slides the most. I use them for hypderdoc lessons, @peardeck interactive lessons, & I like to create graphic organizers for Ss, too. A fun lesson I learned this summer that I look forward to doing is creating memes on slides. More here: https://t.co/gWTMaXYluG#6thchat
A2: I have been working with some classes to do a class broadcast, we have been using Slides for them to collaboratively write up their script, see what groups before have discussed, and then using that as a teleprompter when we record
#6thchat
Yes! The voice typing is so helpful for students who know answers or have ideas but can speak them faster than type them, and who are always questioning spelling, etc. #6thchat
A2: I used Slides to create Facebook profiles for historical and literary figures. I uploaded a template for Ss in G-Classroom & had them add pictures, friends, & comments to other peoples' "walls" that reflected conversations they would have based on their research. #6thchat
A3) I use forms for Status of the Class w/reading or writing assignments (what page Ss are on, etc); also, I will have Ss sign up for book groups or select countries to study for social studies. I like how info is downloaded into a spreadsheet for me to see/manipulate. #6thchat
I haven't used the quiz yet but I understand you can "lock" students into quiz so they can't "wander" off an look at other things? Do I understand that correctly? #6thchat
A4: I give reflections for each unit on a form. What they learned, what activities they liked and didn’t like. Gives pretty little graphs to go with it! Also use it to sign up for activities like, “come make pretty pink snowflakes for Mrs. Sevinsky’’s room” tomorrow! #6thchat
A3: I use Forms as a formative assessment tool for quick spot checks. I also I use it for parents to sign up for conferences. Ss use it to provide feedback about my classes and what can be improved. #6thchat
That's a good idea! I keep thinking about how I want student input or ideas on things and forget to "ask" or run out of time, but posting a form ahead of time would cure that! #6thchat
A4) Use maps for Ss to identify examples of 5 themes of geography for Social Studies. I have also had Ss take a tour of famous museums, art, etc. with street view. With ELA, Ss can look at settings by exploring maps. More ideas: https://t.co/wdPdLEud1F#6thchat
A4: I did a project for grad school that I wanted to use with Percy Jackson (before I switched jobs) to have Ss use Google Maps Tour Builder to map out Percy's journey along with information along the way
#6thchat
A4: My Ss are currently planning a trip around the world using G-Maps. They are finding the coordinate points via maps, then plotting the points onto a map to learn how to use the global grid. They LOVE Street View because they get to explore famous landmarks. #6thchat
A4) part 2 again thanks to @jmattmiller who initially introduced me to the power of MyMaps in the classroom Thank you! Here are more ideas from him: https://t.co/QqMvXfIFO8#6thchat
#6thchat I'm actually not sure how to use Google Maps but I've seen Google Earth used in the classroom quite a bit! It's great to get a good idea of what a setting looks like. Maybe in a unit with setting/story development, students can use it to get inspiration!
A5) I use google sheets usually in tandem with google forms. I have Ss share their link to their MyMaps so that I can easily click on each link to see their maps projects. Then, I share the sheet and all Ss can explore one another's maps. #6thchat
A5: I use Google Sheets a lot more for myself to keep organized than with Ss. One add-on I love is RosterSync-Teacher Edition. It allows me to make a class list from Google Classroom super easily
#6thchat
A5: I'm teaching my Ss how to use formulas in Sheets to track their mileage for their virtual world trip. They track the distances between their locations & using the scale on the map to determine the total distance traveled. This will be used understand map distortions. #6thchat
A5: Personally, I use G-Sheets for my own data tracking and growth monitoring. (Shameless self-promotion - NWEA Data Tracking sheet https://t.co/daW39igQ0u) #6thchat
A6) So, I am struggling a bit w/being efficient w/ the new "improved" Google Classroom. I am getting used to how it is organized but I feel like my Ss have a hard time finding assignments. I put them into folders, but they still struggle. Helpful ideas here for me? #6thchat
A6: I have a Google Classroom I've set up with all of the staff in my building to share various edtech training tools and videos I have been creating this year to assist as we move to a 1:1 program in January
#6thchat
A6.2: Last year I also used Classroom to run 2 classes simultaneously. I had my regular class working with me at one pace and a separate one with Ss from each of my sections working on a different set of lessons at faster pace
#6thchat
A6) #6thchat I use G Classroom everyday to post links and assignments for Ss. I don't like the new improved version either. I wish new things loaded to the top, not the bottom. I have Ss go to the Classwork tab & find things organized by topic.
All of the MAP Test data cells have been set with conditional formatting set to the grade level performance band with a key at the bottom to show which color relates to which grade level. #6thchat
A6: I use Classroom to distribute differentiated graphic organizers and content to Ss so they can work at their level. When they added the ability to post by student, it was a game changer for me. #6thchat
#6thchat My supervisor uses google classroom for everything! Students can access all of their assignments/homework on their google classroom and even turn in their homework as well!
A7) I recommend @peardeck and love Loupe Collage @shapecollage for creative interest w/my Ss. Read and Write, Insert Learning @InsertLearning , Doctopus & Goobric are a must. #6thchat
#6thchat A6: My supervisor uses google classroom for everything! Students can access all of their assignments/homework on their google classroom and even turn in their homework as well!
A7: In Google Sheets I use Rostersync to make lists and Crop Sheet to get rid of extra cells a lot. In Slides I like the @PearDeck add-on to turn into a PearDeck presentation
#6thchat
A7: I learned about how to use @PearDeck from @mrskochheiser at #517summit this summer. I am looking forward to adding this to my presentations to collect feedback from Ss in real time. #6thchat
A7: Has anyone ever used autoCrat (or something similar) for Mail Merge/Form Feeds? I am looking for something to do that for quick reflection sheets and cannot find anything that I like. #6thchat
A8: I use Google Keep a lot to keep myself organized, it is basically a digital version of sticky notes that you can put checkboxes onto for lists
#6thchat
A8) So, I haven't used Google Keep much but hear great things about it from some people. Anyone here use it? Ideas? I use google drawing but usually w/Slides Also, I recommend PDF Mergy to merge Ss work to print for bulletin boards, conferences, etc. #6thchat
A8: I am planning on using Google Hangouts to record interviews for my (hopeful) podcast starting in January 2019.
Google Keep is great for creating digital notes and checklists for organization. #6thchat
A8: I've used Skype with a homebound student at one point, but I think Hangouts would be a great resource since all of our Ss have G-Suite accounts. Sick day lessons for those Ss who can access from home. #6thchat
I never liked how the stream was organized just posting in chronological order. I was super excited about the Classwork update, but I don't use it with the class I'm teaching now. I'm not sure how it's actually being utilized by others. #6thchat
That's a good idea. I had hoped it would be the first thing they'd see and not have to click to a second tab, etc. But, it may be just as easy so they don't have to scroll to find them. #6thchat
Yeah. The only other thing I can think of is to reuse the post with the links (if you just have one) and repost it every so often to keep it towards the top (you might be able to schedule a bunch ahead of time). Not the best solutions, so definitely submit feedback! #6thchat
