Welcome to #IEedchat. Tonight we will be discussing great EdTech tools that are underused. Can be new and undiscovered or maybe they are just under appreciated. We will be using the Q1:A1 format.
Q0: Please introduce yourself. Before we talk about under appreciated EdTech tools, name the single tech tool that is MOST appreciated in education. Why? #IEedchat
A0: Hi everyone. Tom Ashley here - TOSA Tech Coach @PalomaValley High School. I think the most fundamental edtech tool at our disposal is the Google search engine because it has democratized who has access to information. #IEedchat
A0: Jonathan Synnott, tech TOSA for PUHSD. Most appreciated tech tool I’m hearing from colleagues is Google Classroom; it has changed the way teachers teach. #ieedchat
Schools in more countries are choosing #Chromebooks. Learn how educators from around the world are using them creatively to engage all types of learners https://t.co/mPLHV0NfeT

Q1: The Internet search engine is not underused, but it is definitely under-utilized. How can educators do a better job teaching students to use search engines on Google and other platforms. #IEedchat
A1: First, Google offers some great simple tutorials here: https://t.co/dzSC5Ur4ry. I highly recommend History/English teachers have students use the Google Translate extension to search foreign language news media to explore point of view. #IEedchat
A1: Have Ss narrow down what they specifically want to find rather than pouring over websites endlessly, than have Ss use advanced search features to narrow down searches #IEedchat
And I think the strongest rising star (with some to much bias) is @Desmos
What other company do you know of that has a guiding principles like these:

A1:I remember a session at SDCUE back in 2016 where someone stated that students needed more time to be shown how to search better, you have to guide them #ieedchat
A2: Ok, I just discovered this platform for fact-checking news and social media stories called https://t.co/pO2ZumHhRd If you prove you are a teacher they will give you a premium account. Such and important skill for our students! #IEedchat
A1: show them and guide them through the process. Research is a trained skill so let’s not throw them in the pool and then demand they can swim #IEedchat
A1:
One of my go to's is using the "site:" prefix, helps me find something from particular site,
Also, custom search engines like
Problem Based Lesson search engine https://t.co/SuIVtAChNQ
and #MTBoS search engine https://t.co/l10V3Fxgaj#IEedchat
Q3: Does your organization use a use a back channel support system? If not, what would you like to know about these platforms. If yes, what is the platform and how do you take advantage of it? #IEedchat

A3: We absolutely rely on @SlackHQ. You can use it for free. We pay for ours so we can archive all our conversations and use as tech helpdesk reference later.
#ieedchat
A2: Extension I love is OneTab; I know it is pretty well known, but it keeps me sane as it pulls all my tabs into one place (useful because tabs are my to-do list) #ieedchat
A3: Yes, we use https://t.co/9ABDdAV10F. It is a fantastic backchannel collaboration tool. I can't believe more districts aren't using it. I learn so much from my colleagues on it to solve daily problems. #IEedchat
A3: have used a back channel at some conference presentations, pretty cool, haven't used myself except for SLACK at conferences to keep in touch, know our IT uses #IEedchat
Q4: Give a shout-out to an online educational news platform (for educators not students) that you would like to promote. Why do you like this organization? #IEedchat
A3:
Love how @puhsd uses @SlackHQ. Helps me on the daily. We also use the free version for large group attendance to conference. Great tool.
With @IACUE we use Gsuite to organize communication and track conversations for entire board to stay informed as well.

A4: I absolutely love https://t.co/yGER6wcL4N. I use it to keep on top of big news events at colleges, especially community colleges. I think high school teachers would find it useful too. #IEedchat
Q4: Give a shout-out to an online educational news platform (for educators not students) that you would like to promote. Why do you like this organization? #IEedchat
I believe the correct spelling is accommodate. If I just embarrassed you in front of all of your followers, make sure to follow us! RT @judykaylane: gotta say NewsELA for any content area, can change lexile to accomodate Ss, annotate, test...#IEedchathttps://t.co/pMxvnxBF6i

A5: I really like CK-12 website, it has all sorts of things that you can use for your classes. The videos and questions that go with them help save time. #IEedchat

A6:The plus of CK-12 is that it has content for you to use, but the issue at times is that it's not from you. However it is a time saver and should be used to help reteach for some students #ieedchat
A6: I believe Khan Academy is under-appreciated. I love Khan Academy in Español. Teachers can assign in English. English learners can take see the assignment in Spanish. Great tool to accelerate EL 1s and 2s. #IEedchat
A6: I think our parents need to know about Khan Academy, especially if they don't know how to help their child with homework. Still finding lots of parents don't know about it #ieedchat
FT: Seek things that will save you time and learn them little by little, within your comfort zone. With time you will get better and in the end the Ss will be better off #ieedchat
