#Edtechchat focuses on Education Technology. Co-founder Tom Murray says #edtechchat "connects us professionally with inspiring educators from all over the world, all of who encourage us to be better every day for the children and families we serve.”
We used to do it by stats - just straight up who participates - recently - we just have fun with the topic and don't count - think of it as the #edtechchat warm up question :)
Hi everyone! My name is Paul. I’m a (new!) Computer Science teacher in Canada. I obtained my teaching license last Spring. I’m currently completing my MSc in Computer Science. #edtechchat
Howdy #edtechchat!
Alex - #techdir from NJ - not a teacher but I did marry one! Volunteer teacher for many years for various programs - looking to learn tonight!
A1: Microsoft Access. I took a class in it and didn't get relational databases at all. That ticked me off so I repeated the class until I understood it. Eventually got a degree in database administration! #edtechchat
A1: Wow...that is tough. I remember being wary of the Smartboard. BUT, I also had an Apple IIE dinosaur & Ss could play Oregon Trail
#edtechchat#I'mOld
A1 As a kid rebuilt & restored antique @Maytag engines. Exploding gasoline and spinning steel - could lose a finger! Break it, take it apart, fix it, put back together - the essence of #edtech! #edtechchat
A1 - these weird segway type robots that I was coding in a grad CS class - enough power in them to pin you to the wall (they were almost a meter tall). #edtechchat
I had taken a #Tandy1000 apart to install a SoundBlaster when my dad came home and walked by... had it back together by dinner. Scared everyone! #edtechchat
I know, and when we moved when I was 18, my mom got rid of my games, and then when I was in my 30s she bought me one, it wasn't as much fun, but still scary ;) #edtechchat
A1: I can’t say that I was scared by definitely intimidated by the different uses of #gafe. There are so many things you can do with Classroom, forms, docs. The possibilities are endless. #edtechchat
I love that last week we were talking about our gratitude and thankfulness around #EdTech and this week we jump right into fear. :) #edtechchat keeps us on our toes.
A1: I don’t think it was ever the tech itself that scared me. More the would it work while getting observed or when showing it to someone else #edtechchat
A1: I used to be terrified of the electronic blood pressure machines they have in doctors offices when I was younger. The first edtech would probably be Edmodo. Scared of how kids could use it. Made me realize the importance of digital citizenship. #edtechchat
My students are always amazed when I tell them how much tech has infiltrated their life - they have always had it, so they don't know better #edtechchat

I think "privacy" is something form the past that we no longer truly have. Even with the best safeguards all of our information is out there ... more about damage control now. #edtechchat

A2: Don’t be afraid of failure. We teach our students to take risks in their learning. The same applies to teachers. Try out new tech tools. If your plan doesn’t go as expected, adapt and learn from the experience. #edtechchat
A2 Watching tutorials, youtube has a vast amount on information, also just experimenting with a tool without a goal can help you learn new things. #edtechchat
A2: Supportive building leadership that empowered me to take risks and provided an outlet for me to share #edtech practices with my peers & an amazing co-teacher willing to try new things #edtechchat
A2 Not sure I have. I did manage to eventually do what I wanted and turned it into a great project with students and colleagues. Use for Good not Evil. #edtechchat
A2 - repeated exposure. And learning how it works. The more you use it, the more you understand it, the less it scares you. Fear of the unknown changes when it becomes known #edtechchat
A2: to get over the fear it’s about jumping in and reflecting to get to where we are more comfortable. It can take time & issues where you back peddle, but it’s about trying again to make it work for you. #edtechchat
A2: I have always been a life long learner; I went from being scared of tech to being the tech lead at my school and now I have my PhD in Educational Technology! #edtechchat
Q2 Tackled it head on! I created a Twitter and started posting about the resources I create. Now I find myself spending far too much time on Twitter! #edtechchat
A2) for the Apple computer I signed up for support but never did more than 1 session. I didn’t know what I didn’t know! Just had to try & Google or YouTube! #EdTechChat
A2 Technology can be fixed. Almost always it can be improved. Don't fear breaking it because that is how you learn. Fixing and improving it is how you grow. Implementing it in your lessons is a true success. #edtechchat
Very true. Even if you don't give your email to FB/linkedIn/twitter, etc, undoubtedly many of your friends have uploaded their contacts... you're known even where you don't supply info... #edtechchat

I won't lie ... I fake it until I make it ... I "get" tech so no matter what software I am using I can usually make it work ... everything operates in the same basic way. #edtechchat

A2: I have memories of breaking my mom’s work computer when I was a kid so many times she finally told me to fix it….that worried me, but I got on with it. This is what I hope for with our Ss today…btw, the computer got fixed. #edtechchat
We're venturing close to my alter ego in #infosec ... We are known commodities, within a scarily accurate percentage. Keep things private when you can. #edtechchat

My favorite tip: Use google to find out how to use software, hardware, whatever! Tons of tutorials and helpful resources are a web search away! #edtechchat
I jumped right in, head first, and got involved in practicing, learning with colleagues, and embracing whatever tech supports were available #edtechchat
I liked yours alot - gave more detail than what we were doing - ours is part marketing part advice - lots of hits on facebook - will know at christmas concert when parents give me feedback #edtechchat
It's amazing how looking confident while you randomly search menus/google for help makes other people think you're a genius at all tech. :P At least, that's been my path more often than I'd like to admit. #edtechchat

Shhh! Web searches are the IT professional's secret sauce! They make us look like we know everything when we really just know how to search! #edtechchat

Ooh, I haven't done much in #infosec myself, but the longer I've been involved with #edtech (and with a PhD in CS), the more interested I am. #edtechchat

a3. I find there is nothing like pressure to help you learn and get comfortable with tech. I just did my first Hangout On Air last week. Knowing I would be live to the world really helped me focus and learn about the tool :)
#edtechchat
Well put... selectively private is particularly important. We must understand almost everything we do will be public, so keeping a few things close is critical. #edtechchat

A3: In my eyes there is no technology that I cannot learn. With a great support team around, there is always someone to learn from/with on my team. #edtechchat
A3: Try not to get overwhelmed. Reach out to my awesome PLN for help when I need it. Don't beat yourself up, we all have to start somewhere
#edtechchat
A3 First step is admitting you have a problem. Be transparent, find help, then tinker and try to break things. Learning requires failure and is messy. Just admit it. #edtechchat
A3) I only have so much time w/Ss as a specialist so I have to be choosy. Lots of great tech I’d like to use but don’t have time. NO time for bad tech! #Edtechchat
A3 Ask Qs to colleagues and PLN, look for support, and usually I give it a go, see what happens, have tried to be better at taking some risks with learning #edtechchat
My 1st job out of the Marines was as an AV/Media Specialists... called into college classroom to help Professors work their computers/projectors ... trial by fire ... #edtechchat
A3: practice, practice, practice. It’s not bad either to show your audience that you’re human too if something doesn’t work the way you want it to! #edtechchat
Yes - me too. I also have more than 1 twitter. The one with my name is also associated with the #edtech I've worked on. And I want to be able to chat about edtech without those companies hanging over me. They've influenced me, but not who I am. #edtechchat
In reply to

It may seem overwhelming at first, but with experience and getting the chance to mess with whatever it may be you become more familiar with it. Do no let it get to you! #edtechchat
A3: I talk with friends and co-workers that have to use the technology and try to figure it out together. Also spending a lot of time navigating the technology and using google or youtube to figure out tutorials. #edtechchat
A3 I have a classroom full of assistants. I share why we are trying out the new tool and that I am just learning. They are more than happy to make it fly and point out the shortcomings. Great discussions ensue. #edtechchat

A3 You struggle through it if it is a required assignment, and if it is not working for you, do not use it. You set the limits, not every tech tool works for everyone. There is no shame in turning down a tech tool, I know I have! #edtechchat
A3 Sometimes you just have to walk away. I recently used @Gynzy for the first time, without realizing that it did not automatically save. After I accidentally exited without saving about an hours worth of work, I just needed a break! #edtechchat
A3: I just jump in and play around; I have no fear anymore lol - nothing you can do that will break it!
Sometimes I'll grab a friend and we explore together. #edtechchat
A3 Admit up front I don't know how this works, but that we can learn it together. Then have no fear - what can be broken can be fixed in #edtech! #edtechchat
A3: Practice makes perfect. Before introducing new tech in the classroom, I always spend a great deal of time becoming as comfortable as I can with the tool. Once I present tech to students, they often inspire me to use the tech in a way I hadn’t previously considered #edtechchat
(shameless plug alert)
or better yet, join me Monday, December 18th on #wyoedchat at 7:00pm when I interview her on Hangouts Live! It will be my second one I've done :)

A3 - Pretend! If it's in front of others - think aloud is particularly useful, as others may catch where your thinking doesn't match the program. Otherwise, go in with a goal - "I want to do x" - and then try and try again until success. #edtechchat
Irony ... when I took my EdTech class in college it was with a professor who I had to work with numerous times because she couldn't operate the tech ... #edtechchat this job really set me up to understand tech. all on the job
Having Ss explore before you do is awesome as well! They generate the pros and cons and them email the developers on how to improve the app or tool. #edtechchat
One of our school wide digital capacities is "choosing the best tool." These experiments of #edtech integration allow us to have those great conversations and to model my thinking about purpose and use. #edtechchat#futureready
A3 More you do the easier it gets ... Saw my 1st Smartboard on a Tuesday and was told Professor X will be here on Thursday and wants to know how to use it in his Calculus 2 course ... no pressure #edtechchat
A3: Look around online. There are often amazing YouTube videos and education blogs that provide example lessons that have already been classroom tested. #edtechchat
In terms of some important issues like protecting information, and the need to keep students out of the exam questions and results. But the mechanics are very different. #EdTechChat

Have you heard of the rubber ducky method? In CS, it's a way to debug code - explain what you've done to a rubber ducky. Idea is to just get you explaining out loud. And that you don't need a person who can respond - often just need to hear yourself. #edtechchat
The rubber ducky will find its way to my school bag before evening's end! Would work well in Writer's Workshop as students talk out their ideas and read their drafts. #edtechchat#TeachWriting

A4: Your fellow teachers are often a great resource. Reach out to other teachers in your school. Many school districts also have educational technology consultants who can support you along your #edtech journey. #edtechchat
A4 My Twitter PLN of course, coworkers, and NJ has a great Google+ group for School Technology Coordinators that is a fantastic resource for discussion! #edtechchat
A4 Find the young people! Asking S's for help can actually be a good thing by giving them autonomy and feeling pride. Every day kids are learning to use tech at a younger age, they know how to use it or they will figure it out in 5 secs. #edtechchat
A4 If Google can't help, I always turn to a peer. Most often, if they are not familiar with the tool, they are willing to struggle through with you! #edtechchat
A4 - the internet! Twitter, google, friends, coworkers... And in a classroom nowadays, students! Many of them have mastered stuff before we even try it. #edtechchat
a4. @alicekeeler is a great place to start, but there are many others out there. I'd build a column in your TweetDeck and label it "Tech Helpers" or something. Then drop in educators you run across that have those great ideas.
I'm here for you #edtechchat lol
A4: Twitter peeps and the teachers I know that are willing to take risks and try something new. I also show a lot to @hbender2019. Sometimes she helps me think about ways to properly use the tool, and the problems that can happen. #edtechchat
A4: I can find coworkers who are willing to learn and also not afraid to try new things. People who work close to me are also fair game! #pln#edtechchat
A4: Our fellow colleagues might even identify a use for the #edtech tool that we had never dreamed of. There is so much value in collaboration with colleagues. #edtechchat

#edtechchat it's hard because I am the one that people come to. I am able to use this forum and my professors more recently as I pursue a PhD in Ed Tech .
I created an app for my son that makes him answer flash cards to earn screen time. He went from 40% to 90%. I am trying to get Inspire into schools. Any help? #edtechchat
Yes! You would be surprised at how many there are right across the hall from you.
Then you'll be surprised at just how quickly you become one of them :)
#edtechchat
A4: I turn to my awesome tech department, the tech leaders around MS - shout out to @msmetla and @msmeca, and tech passionate educators in the classroom. #edtechchat
A5 I've been developing connections with #maker folk, including @MakerDepot right nearby me... Great resources in a field very close to #edtech! #edtechchat
A5 My two children have fun noodling through new #edtech tools with me. Blogs and articles are also helpful for me as I explore new integration ideas. #edtechchat
Walking in there always makes me miss my father. Master mechanic but #maker at heart. He would have walked in there and just been in heaven on earth. #edtechchat
A6 I like to run new tech by my mother in law. If I can explain it / get her to handle it, anyone can use it. She is the ultimate user interface test! #edtechchat
A6 @SFecich is an #edtech guru! Not only will she help you with your specific needs, she can recommend about million other useful tools. I am also thankful for @alexjhyer and @MollyFConlon, who are always willing to take an #edtech endeavor with me! #edtechchat
This chat rocked tonight! Thanks everyone and @nathan_stevens for keeping us on track! Don't forget to follow people with ideas you like or are challenged by! #edtechchat
