Our mission for our 21st century chat is to create a positive 21st century learning environment for our students by sharing resources and ideas that has worked in our classrooms. Join us every Sunday from 8:00-9:00 PM (EST) on Twitter using the hashtag #21stedchat. All are welcome!
A1: Corporations banking on education. E.g. turning growth mindset into a marketing tool; making experiential learning a sold process; turning ed tech into a series of expensive programs. Ruins any actual pedagogical change, burns out educators, and hurts students. #21stedchat
A1: I recently attended an #edtech conference and when I was planning my day I was frustrated by the # of sessions that are solely based on a tool. #21stcenturylearning needs to focus on better instructional methods first rather than new tools. #21stedchat
A1 Currently on my list is when I am unable to use @Seesaw to its full capacity and can't show it to parents. This to me defeats the purpose and I can't show my students work to an aunthetic audience. #21stedchat
This is so frustrating and one that I think will forever be on the naughty list. It's so hard to change the way that adults think. Much easier to influence our Ss. #21stedchat
Sometimes I've found that the people you're referring to are actually the students themselves. Apathy among some students makes school an obligation rather than an opportunity. #21stedchat
Because my school opted to not show it to parents. It's now only for storage purposes and we had to d/l work to a USB for parents to see selected things. #21stedchat
A2: Last summer I took a course in developing a #PLN. It's been a game-changer. I've used others to improve the edu opport. in my classes. For example, tomorrow we are web conferencing with the exec. dir. of https://t.co/n2JrROpwQM to learn about campaign finance. #21stedchat
There have been especially this school year gurus...saying you need to decorate your room this way or that to be a good teacher. Or if you don't do this or that personally or professionally your are not a good teacher. Or if you don't teach the way I do you're a bad T #21stedchat
A2. My new job change! Working for an amazing consulting company that is helping districts make change while also practicing what they preach. They have an amazing culture. #21stedchat
To piggyback on this I think Twitter has become too much of look at the amazing stuff I do and not enough of look at this failure help me improve. We can all stand to grow if we publicize our shortcomings. #21stedchat
A2: One person that has been on my Nice list for a long time is @rushtonh who runs @NextVista and lets you know about great things that can be done in your classroom and for your students. #21stedchat
I see this happening and I used to see people share resources and suggestion but I don't see as much any more. We used to even have 50 or more people in #21stedchat but it is dwindling. Seems like chats are going away bc there are so many now.
A2: People working to add purpose back into schools (why wouldn't it be there?) Teachers giving students opportunities to discover/pursue their interests & figure out more about themselves. #21stedchat
Agree! Just like on @facebook we see everyone's A side and not the B sides. That is why when I do demos I will broadcast them live and then explain the failures. #21stedchat
A2: @edtechfarooq is on my edu good list forever. He helps with campus tech issues whenever and however he can, even after dinner on a Sunday evening. He is TI and he stretches himself to help with IT. Plus, he is a great husband and father! ❤️ #21stedchat
I think chats are only effective if the participants actually take action steps to work on what was discussed in the chat. Unfortunately, we promote ideas like #geniushour for our students yet we don't give Ts the same opportunities. Why the disconnect btwn Ts and Ss?
Because this platform can be negative I suspect that some chats have moved to Voxer, Slack, or Google Hangouts. I know many that were here are now there and it takes a little more effort to get to them. Perhaps it helps with spam and troll avoidance. #21stedchat
@Edu_Thompson I feels it has become about writing the next great book, &while many have helped me, I’m realizing that I don’t need to be anyone else but me. I can learn new skills, tools and approaches but I’m me, not these other people. Likewise no one needs to be me #21stedchat
That is true which is why we end every #21stedchat with what is one take-away to help summarize what chatters have learned and hopefully help them take the next steps.
At my school we had learning communities, in which we chose because rod interest. We met with other teachers that had the same interest and learnt about it. We discussed it and it was OK. #21stedchat
A3. If 'take a deep breath' sounds like simple advice, that's because it is. Simple – and effective. Learn how breathing can impact both you and your team for the better. https://t.co/CWZPVoD6r4#joyfulleaders#21stedchat
Correct I am, I want to use Seesaw for what it is best. Somewhere to publish student work. I do some amazing things, yet my parents will never see them. I've not been able to change this. #21stedchat
A3: Keep an open-door policy between administrators and teachers. Administrators should always be present in classrooms just to see what's going on (and to learn!) Teachers should have open communication w/ administrators. A learning community isn't just Ts/Ss. #21stedchat
A3: A big group of teachers at my school get together outside of school for social time to build relationships and personal connections. This week starts our #SecretSanta which ought to be a lot of fun wrapping up with breakfast on Friday morning. #21stedchat
Yes it can feel that way about writing the next book. It gives me passion though to think all these ideas that were doing would be good enough for a book. #21stedchat
Lets not forget parents and members of the outside community. Schools can be a great place for the community to bring their problems to in order for Ss to solve them.
Don’t misunderstand, I’m happy to share, but not if the pressure is placed on me to write for their style . It’s me , take it, leave it, modify it, burn it. But don’t complain B.C. I didn’t write it for you or your Ss #21stedchat
We did an online one with people we chat with for our #AussieED chat. It was lots of fun. My first one to be involved in where I had never met my KK. #21stedchat
A4: I think the best way to get off the naughty list is to continue honestly evaluating what we're doing as Ts. Good teaching is always a work in progress and embodies a life-long learning mentality. #21stedchat
That is a bad way to run a school. Each one of us is different and can use different apps and methods. If they don't want to do it they don't have to. One size does not fit all. #21stedchat
