#miched Archive
The #michED chat is a grassroots effort dedicated to giving teachers, students, and parents across Michigan a bigger voice in the conversation about education in our state. We welcome all voices through a variety of projects, media, and social networking. We’re trying to address educational issues through apolitical conversation, spreading ideas and stories of success from Michigan classrooms across the state, and helping teachers and students regain the courage to connect and demonstrate that schools in Michigan are creating amazing opportunities for learning. We want the face and voice of education in Michigan to be a mural of shared experiences and positive examples of connected learning.

A3: Yes, virtual PD over F2F (mostly). Everyone's voice can be heard, more so than in F2F PD. Conversation isn't dominated by a few.
Welcome! How did the kick off go today?
Happy Wednesday ! Allison from Lansing checking in
We will be using Q1, A1, Q2, A2, protocol before questions and answers. Welcome to everyone! Big crowd tonight!
I'm hoping to keep up! I have a feeling this chat moves super fast!
Tami, high school math teacher fom Zeeland. Playing around with thinglink this week.
I like how the CER/inquiry addresses something which many might have misconceptions about, those are hard to deal with
Q1) Have you attended virtual PD? If yes, what drew you to the offering? If not, why not?
Hello all, Matt from IL joining, elem lead learner
Good! Lots of new users, hoping to spread word over the coming months about the free PD for MI teachers :)
Laura MCDonell, Saint Clair, MI
A1 Twitter is my virtual PD :) Otherwise I have done online full classes as personal PD but not stand alone PD courses
Jacqueline Kubik, student teacher in Ann Arbor, 5th Grade. Just found out about Class Dojo.
A1: I'm a big fan of webinars because if you can't make it, you can watch later or re-watch.
A1) I personally have not attended virtual PD. Honestly I've never had the chance to or thought about it
A1 - love ability to attend PD from anywhere I am, not constrained by my location
A1: Virtual PD saves travel time. Can often schedule at more convenient time
A4: Value determined by this Q:"Will this actually improve my teaching/work w/ kids?" Free is better! Districts have limited funds.
Hi - Janine from west MI, visual arts teacher in the middle level
Q1 Posted for Please answer with A1 https://t.co/pUmRtblY8Q
Q1) Have you attended virtual PD? If yes, what drew you to the offering? If not, why not?
Kelsie from Leslie, MI. Currently student teaching in Jackson. I have recently found a love for the smart board and all it offers
A1: Virtual METS Rally last year. I love my METS friends/network. Next rally coming up soon! https://t.co/bDpllIHnCu
A1: yes. Enjoyed not having to jump thru hoops to get time off but didn't feel as connected. Was Easier to lurk
A1: Yes, req'd by district. Can do in my own time, but choices sometimes limited.
Q1) Have you attended virtual PD? If yes, what drew you to the offering? If not, why not?
A1 - I have. I was compelled to join by the people who were running it.
A1: If we're counting Twitter, I do virtual PD every week! I've done some webinars, but that's about it.
A1: I've attend several virtual PDs - enjoy the opportunity to learn during "off" hours, learn from folks outside my region.
A1: I'm bad about signing up for webinars, but not actually attending them. I've presented more than I've attended
A1-I have not taken any courses but have looked at PD from focused on
A1: Twitter, Google Certs, Required Moodle Units by District (Yearly Trainings, i.e. blood pathogens, bullying, etc.)
A1 Most virtual PD was valuable because I got to choose the topics - not forced on me
A1: I'm on Twitter constantly, though!
A1: I have never even heard of virtual PD, but it seems that it is helpful. Is it like back channeling, where everyone is heard?
I have never attended a virtual PD as I have not had the opportunity to. I do find the idea intriguing, though.
A1 Have not attended. Would be interested in hearing what the draw is over f2f. I engage better when PDs are in person.
A1: No attempt at sarcasm, isn't this chat a form of "virtual PD?"
A1: I did conference and conference online both were fun and convenient
How do Ss use the board? Easy to fall back to fancy projector with annotation. Designed for interaction!
Hello all! Nasreen tuning in from Ann Arbor, MI.
thrilled to see a pre service teacher fostering their own growth and development
A1: no. In fact I didn't even know it existed.
A1: well since Twitter chats are virtual PD, umm YES because I like connecting and learning
I have not been required by the district-however through the OU Teacher Leadership Program I have found Tweetdecks full of PD opp.
A1) I'm a student teacher and I've never heard my mentor teacher talk about virtual PD. I can't wait to read all of your responses.
A1) Twitter and listening to a few podcasts( I think that counts)
You're in for a treat during tonight's chat then! Many consider Twitter Virtual PD for educators
sometimes the cost - no expense for district is a draw. Also you can connect with many others near and far
A1: We host weekly webinar PD sessions for our iEducators
Welcome! You're virtual PD'ing now :) Great to see a Stu T on here!
A1) Twitter, on line classes, I have never done a webinar.
Welcome Nasreen. Is this your first time in the chat?
A5: Really helpful when people link to specific resources/blogs/PDFs, etc. I love how share so much!
I have not had the opportunity to attend a virtual PD. I would really be interested in attending one though!
It's learning online. Webinars, online courses, self-paced courses, discussion forums.
So true. Love the continuous stream of virtual PD that fills my Twitter feed https://t.co/driL74uA9w
A1: well since Twitter chats are virtual PD, umm YES because I like connecting and learning
A1 I love connecting with diverse people from around the world in webinars, opens many doors and viewpoints!
Well said - again, different entry points, end up in the same spot.
read boring books and hoped my imaginary friends would chat with me about it! ;)
awesome job taking charge of your PD
they love being able to get up and do grammar, write discussion q's, etc. anything to get them up and moving!
Q1): Have you attended virtual PD? If yes, what drew you to the offering? If not, why not?
I think it's interesting to hear peoples' interpretations of virtual PD. We are all engaging in it right now!
Already seeing the benefit of chats. Hadn't considered location limitations or needing to get time off.
A1 Currently engrossed in a culturally responsive teacher efficacy academy with
has extended my beyond anything I considered possible.
Virtual PD has the potentially be just as engaging, interactive, and innovative as f2f
many consider Twitter chat Virtual PD! So welcome to your first virtual PD :)
A6: has a wonderful group of creative world language educators! Ideas apply across other subject areas too.
Q2) Two parter---What are the benefits (B) and drawbacks (D) of virtual PD?
What free webinar do you suggest?
A2: B-free/cheap, can be done anywhere, learn at your own pace
A2a: Do it on your own time! A2b: Finding the time outside the work day. Hard with kids that keep you busy.
Happy Wednesday everyone! Kevin from Warren Woods dropping in for a bit on the chat
Q2 posted! Note it's a two parter---just to be tricky :) https://t.co/PoY1XtMwiO
Q2) Two parter---What are the benefits (B) and drawbacks (D) of virtual PD?
A1: Benefits - choices (time, pace, place). Drawbacks - interaction limited by designer and tool
A2: easy to engage from anywhere, connect with people across the country/state, no cost for districts, no sub plans!
A2: Virtual PD offers flexible scheduling/choice. It's often disconnected from a building/staff though.
A2: (B) Get to make choices in what I want to particpate in. (D) Often not seen as "real" PD for schools.
A2, Pt2: D-Hard to find time on your own, may be hard to stay focused when you have other things pulling at your attention
Q2) What are the benefits (B) and drawbacks (D) of virtual PD?
Virtual PD has the potential to be just as engaging, interactive, and innovative as f2f
A2 my mentor teacher attended a virtual PD with a lot of tech issues. No back-up plan led to a waste of time and opportunity
A2 Benefits - cost effective, any place, wider connections. Drawbacks - tech issues can always be a problem, can discourage people
A2 B Choice and Voice D limitations of the tech at hand and learning curve depending on practioner.
A2: Benefits: on- demand any time any where
A2: easier to "check out" and sort of hide in background. Feel less connected to others
(+) networking with many /surplus of ideas/ time/choice
(-) not with your teaching colleagues
There are some quality free ones, I run and there is also and many by local ISDs https://t.co/njMzeu0f3j
What free webinar do you suggest?
has tons of free ones to choose from.
However that can be a positive if the culture of learning (PD) is poor in your district.
A2) Sometimes face to face interactions are more engaging and beneficial. I think it depends on the person though.
A2)B: wide variety of people=great networking opportunities! D: conversations are limited therefore collaboration is more difficult
A2: D - Remaining engaged if it's over several weeks. B - flexible timing and in my pajamas, don't have to leave the house.
A2: B brings the experts closer to home, wide range and selection D easy to tune out, often sit n' git
Late check- at a band concert! Kyle from Mattawan, ELA
A2: drawbacks: don't always know what you will get
A1) I've attended a few virtual PD sessions. It's hard to get out of the office sometimes and virtual PD is so convenient
A2:Virtual PD Benefits=Free and Can listen to The Beatles while learning online. Drawbacks=I miss face to face interactions
A2: D-as a presenter, it's hard to "read" the audience bc you can't see them
A2) I would think that the benefit is that you can do it on your own time and in the comfort of your home.
While I am glad you're here, you and make the score Warren Woods 2, Warren Con 1.
A2: pros - can be done anywhere, anytime. Having grape tea while reading chat, for instance.
True! But you can always power off :)
PD is key to teacher efficacy & in turn, student achievement. Finding ways to maintain a growth mindset can be incredibly difficult
A2: Drawback to virtual PD--What I say to my physical community is not everlasting google-able public knowledge
A2 pt2: B - nice that you have more access to PD beyond the scope of your district/city, you choose the time
Teaching is becoming standardized with PD and the goal needs to be to individualize it. Schools have fewer $ to spend on PD
Hi from Holland . I'm Craig, ed tech consultant at Kent ISD. A2: Benefit of virtual PD: flexibile. Drawback: impersonal.
great point virtual PD can often lack engagement
If done right, school leaders can spend $0. Create an in-house PD catalog, lead by teachers and DIGITIZE it!
A2: D Not sure if this is a "drawback" but are there issues with teachers getting credit for a virtual PD?
Imagine being able to look through a free, PD catalog that outlines content areas and skills taught by fellow educators.
A2: benefits- instant connection and sharing ideas with other teachers. Drawbacks: ? Can't think of any now
A2-I love the ability to drive self-directed PD but would also like to have more meaningful relationships formed
Hi Craig. Glad to see you here.
The same ways catalogs allow shoppers to quickly find what they are searching for, a PD catalog showcases the expertise of educators
interesting perspective. Never thought about it from that stance.
Every teacher has something he or she can contribute to a PD catalog if given the time and space to share, collaborate, and mentor
True. It can also be possible if you have an isolated position/no one to collaborate with in-district.
PD catalog could be digitized in such a way that entire school districts could present educator-led PD at the click of a button
Q2: What are the benefits (B) and drawbacks (D) of virtual PD?
A2: all about PD in my PJs
Creating a digital copy of the PD catalog would enable one school to pave the way for an entire school district to use it!
A2: con - distractions, distractions, distractions
(1/2) Overall goal in education is for all students to achieve at high levels and giving teachers autonomy to choose their PD from
A2) Flexibility and overall reduced costs are huge benefits. Drawbacks could be loss of F2F time and networking opportunities.
Good point. What if we were as careful with the words we speak as we are with the ones we type or record?
(2/2) a simple digital PD catalog could greatly impact the education system in an incredibly positive way.
that's why I love Twitter - gives me a chance to make more regular connections for my PLC
A2: If PD is able to be recorded there are opportunities to go back and review areas of interest
A2: A huge benefit of Virtual PD is that it forces T's to explore & collaborate in innovative ways.
That's a good point. Curious what strategies you use to "read" your virtual audience? https://t.co/uFN7TezDCs
A2: D-as a presenter, it's hard to "read" the audience bc you can't see them
Great to see you on here Kevin!
A2: but having an excuse to travel somewhere new is pretty awesome, too
A2: I miss out on the face to face element when PD is virtual, but if I'm able to pace myself, I enjoy that
I'm going to make it a point to get more involved and build out my PLN. has been great at helping to push me:)
yes! I hosted weekly webinar sessions for our iEducators (new online teachers), it was an amazing collaborative experience!
activities to get participants' voice into the webinar help, asking them to type in chat, manipulate screen, etc
PRINCIPALS and LEAD TEACHERS: Join - Tomorrow (Thurs Feb 18 at 8pm
TOPIC: "Growth Mindset for Educators"
A2: D--I find virtual PD sessions aren't as engaging for me as a learner--only really seen them do mediocre lectures.
. Thank you! It's great to be here!
A2) No travel/dining expenses. Can have PD in a relaxed environment. Drawback: No face to face interactions with other teachers.
I'll work on it. At this point, it's about pride.
A2) B=It's so new it's so awesome D=It's so new it's scary for some
free hosting sites? We used Adobe Connect, but I could see Google Hangouts being a great free option
we are trying to build one, but for the entire state with https://t.co/ZhG820zDhZ - an MDE grant. Free for MI teachers
As a participant in some not so good virtual PD. When people start getting up and coming back after a few min.
But then what would be the good of venting? or thinking out loud? or inappropriate joking? *grin*
totally agree but we sometimes need outside perspectives to ensure our focus is on point
This has been my experience more often than not as well. https://t.co/eEKhDGsvri
A2: D--I find virtual PD sessions aren't as engaging for me as a learner--only really seen them do mediocre lectures.
Hi all! Amy from Oxford checking in a bit late as I listen to 6th Graders playing Bb scales.
we worked very hard to ensure that our sessions were collaborative and engaging. It's not easy, but it can be done!
A2: B - connecting with people from all over the world.
A2 "stand and deliver" virtual PD is just as bad as in person. I want to interact during it...not just hear you talk over slides!
I would so revolt against this. Free bad lectures does not equal good professional development.
Or when you find more people just “watch” the screencast because they can’t make the meeting:)
Good evening! Getting excited for
Platforms limit interaction. I think a acourse over time offers more opportunities than a one-shot webinar.
I do love Twitter, but I don't think of it as virtual PD. Mostly because I don't get credit for it.
Join our session at to hear more about how we engaged our teachers in virtual PD sessions : )
Also, sending participants to other places on the web to complete some type of task, using GDocs
A2: Virtual PD can be done on my time and I can spend time on material I need.
I'm actually a big fan of Virtual PD archiving. I often sign up to get access later knowing I can't attend live.
. this is so true. It's very easy to get caught up in multitasking in the virtual environment.
Q3) Would you choose to attend virtual PD over F2F? Why?
And part of what I review in the archive is the chat!
A2 PD virtual means you can watch in a relaxed setting and watch again later
me too! Are you presenting?
Q3 posted Great discussion tonight! I'm already getting some good perspectives on the topic! https://t.co/zG1IOclqwy
Q3) Would you choose to attend virtual PD over F2F? Why?
A3 Only if cost or crazy distance is prohibitive!!!
but if the presenter is not that great and you have more than one session that you must attend…
Q3) I like a combo of both! Or doing blended PD.
me too! Have about 20 webinars recorded to watch later...
A3: It would have to be a topic I know would keep me engaged. Otherwise, I prefer f2f
I don't disagree. The long-term PD courses seem higher impact when multiple Ts from same building are learning together
A3: It would depend entirely on topic and format. Finding relevant PD as a music educator can sometimes be a challenge.
You missed my point: teachers would be teaching in the PD catalog. Videos organized by content, strands, and objectives!
A3-I think there is a time and place for both, but would like to see the positive aspects of both made into a hybrid model
A3) Completely depends on the PD. Regardless of what the PD is, it need to be useful for my teaching/leadership.
A3: I actually love going to PD & get really excited about it, so if I had the choice, I'd probably pick face to face
A3 - I think we need a good mix of F2F and online. Online is good for what I want, when I need it. Or allowing self-paced
A3). I would enjoy attending a virtual PD if for no other reason than to have the experience and the convenience for a change
A3: virtual. At least I can claim to be doing it from a comfy seat.
A3: I like the archive-ability of virtual PD, but collaboration is better in F2F. My hybrid grad classes are AWESOME!
A3: I usually prefer f2f over virtual but would consider it if costs are huge or I just want to learn at my own pace
A3 can attend despite weather issues!
A3: I was an only child, therefore I like being around people, so I would rather go F2F:)
A3: F2F when there are more opportunities for interaction + collaboration amongst teachers. It allows for more natural discussion.
But it's still just lectures. That's not how I want to teach and it's not how I want to learn.
So blended? That initial face to face is great for establishing better virtual connections later.
Including faces in virtual PD counters the impersonal factor. Avatars/cams increase connection & decrease detachment
A3: That is a tough one... Virtual PD is good because you can connect with so many people and different idea
A3: For me it's a balance of f2f and virt PD. I enjoy traveling and seeing peeps but I love my fam.
A3: nothing replaces f2f encounters, but virtual works when you can't go across country.
A3: But honestly, Twitter might be my favorite form of PD!
A3: Virtual PD allows flexibility and saves time. Less time driving, parking, etc. With virtual PD, we're able to maximize time.
A3 More voices are allowed to be heard at once/ time well managed. AGREED! LOVE OUR HYBRID/ definitely need both
A3) I think it depends on the topic being covered. There r some things that I would prefer F2F interaction 4 quicker ?s and convos
A3) I would choose to attend F2F because I think I would get more out of it. It is also nice to meet other teachers in the district.
A3: I love both! Twitter is a quick & easy way to connect, but I still love the conferences where everyone gets together in person
No lectures. “Hmm I wonder what a Guided Reading Lesson at Level H looks like, focusing on making inferences: just watch”
A3 - Only if the virtual were required/the only option. I'm more difficult to engage when "business-as-usual" is going on around me.
agree, but I think it's hard for people to get uncomfortable and use the webcam. In my experience
A3 you can't go out for snacks and a drink virtually!
A3) Would be interested in trying it. Am leery it would be difficult to stay focused w/o F2F, though.
A3: I find f2f frustrating when it's largely lecture. Too much of that.
Twitter is a contiuum, everyone's a consumer for some time before contributing. When you're ready, jump in.
A3) I don't think it is either/or but a combo of both is best. Free and flexible is good but so is personal interaction.
Yeah, I do like the idea of choosing words carefully though. Even a vent session can be artfully done.
Q3) Would you choose to attend virtual PD over F2F? Why?
A3) I would attend more virtually because no travel. Great for those with children of their own that have after school events.
A3: For online teachers virtual PD works well. It might be different in f2f environments.
A3: And if you know me you know I have “squirrel” moments so I get distracted easily when attending virtually.
A3: Balance is always good. I go for a combination of the two :)
A3: The more involved I become in transforming my teaching, the more convinced I become about the importance of relationship.
I present on Thursday at 1, I think
Having a website with a PD catalog of high-quality instruction taking place, organized in a way that makes sense to teachers!
A3 Such an interesting variety of answers. Just like our students, learning preferences vary 🙂
A3 it seems a lot of student teachers (like myself) are wary. Somebody with experience--are online PDs engaging? helpful? worth it?
That's the only time I write it down in my spreadsheet at least.
Jeremy from Lansing Waverly HS
A3: face to face- I love the energy of f2f interactions
A3: I like virtual PD when it provides a record of the conversation and that it allows for online resources to be brought in
Yes, and webcams jam bandwidth. I encourage avatars, preferably of the actual people.
. There have been a few occasions where I've had to put my phone on DND to get engaged without distractions
It depends--just like it does in person. Try the to start!
A3: You're professional development "diet" should be balanced. Some in person, some online. Some prescribed, other by choice.
. just got home from bball practice. Dang it! I have to miss it. Sorry
A3: Yes.....and no. Love my connections at f2r conferences. But can fit more in with Virtual
A3: Yes.....and no. Love my connections at f2r conferences. But can fit more in with Virtual
I am not sure blended is the right idea...depending upon the content, aspects need to be used to maximize impact
A3) virtual makes face to face so much more fun! Everyone has a voice with virtual
If you skip webinars and just participate on Twitter, it's worth your time. You'll make connections and find great ideas.
Depends. We have an innovative group of Ts that work hard to ensure there are opportunities 4 engagement & collaboration.
Virtual PD engages a majority of its users at different times. Very different than F2F. Real question is how to get T’s to buy in
. I have found bigger questions harder to ask in virtual environment b/c things can get lost in translation while typing
A3- I'd take a balanced approach.
I wasn't a fan of the newest Transformers(TM) movie, but I honor your thoughts about relationships. https://t.co/tN8yerr8Ow
A3: The more involved I become in transforming my teaching, the more convinced I become about the importance of relationship.
Q4 coming up in 2 minutes
As much as I love f2f, you're right- I ❤️
Good point--and like with a Twitter chat, it can be hard to keep up
Q3) Would you choose to attend virtual PD over F2F? Why??
A3: Both can be rich. Both have affordances/constraints.
I am sure might be an option that is how my peeps saw my keynote
I'm a newb and keep forgetting to hashtag 😪
A5: I fee trust needs to be developed between staff and their admin. Also staff need to have a growth mindset implemented.
Agreed. Love and meetups at conferences.
Don't forget about the Republican debate tonight!
get them involved in the planning and presentation process, get feedback, and ask what they want.
eye of the beholder, each experience is different
Blended. Everything in moderation.
Took the questions a little fast...
that's a great point, so why not have T direct PD to some degree
do breakfast 6 am every Friday on Groesbeck at TJs
A3: Can use a flipped/blended approach where everyone comes to the f2f having done some online learning to establish a foundation
Hi all, tuning in late. 5th grade teacher in Ann Arbor
. speaking of which, any good app/website suggestions for Mac OS to help with chats
Ooohhhh, Periscope my session. Thinking
Hi Kelsey!
Q3) Would you choose to attend virtual PD over F2F? Why?
A3 glad to be able to choose. Love the excitement of conferences and EdCamps but appreciate virtual being easy to get to!
Q4) How do you determine whether virtual PD is worth the cost? Is free the only acceptable option? Why or why not?
I keep doing that too! haha
Tweet Deck all the way!!!!!!
I've been using Twitter for a while and I still forget the hashtag all the time
Q4 is in the house.. https://t.co/v9LDkjQeLq
Q4) How do you determine whether virtual PD is worth the cost? Is free the only acceptable option? Why or why not?
I do that sometimes too. You are still a valuable person. https://t.co/RnfWnAShZM
I'm a newb and keep forgetting to hashtag 😪
A3: I like combining virtual & f2f. You get the benefits of a broader reach w/ the intimacy & power of interacting w/ your team.
A4: If it will make me a better educator, it is worth it.
Q4: Free is not the only option. I think about the impact it can have on my teaching and the resources provided before paying .
A4: I'm afraid I've gotten too used to digital content being free. Not a fan of paying for the Times or virtual PD
if you are following the chat, it will # for you
McCullough must leave the building... have a great night all!
If you're talking about Twitter then Tweetdeck is where it's at!
A3: virtual hangouts are the way of the future. Living >30 miles from school I would rather do a Google Hangout if possible
A4: It would have to be pretty special to pay for, since I get so much great learning for free with Twitter & reading blogs
Yes love edcamps! https://t.co/7smcgNAiYr
A3 glad to be able to choose. Love the excitement of conferences and EdCamps but appreciate virtual being easy to get to!
A3: I enjoy aspects of both virtual & F2F, pros & cons of both. Depends on the subject, location and availability
A4: I have not paid for Virtual PD, I would only if I am getting SCECH's or univ. credit for it.
Thanks for tweeting with us!
A4: def need to know that I can fully commit. Free makes it easy to sign up. If not free, want it to impact me & that I can engage
A3: Anytime PD features T choice, I'm in!
A4: I don't think anyone would pay for it unless it's a really common thing. The cost is part of what makes virtual PD nice imo
Hoping my updated profile pic with prevent the "YOu don't look anything like your pic" intros
I like tchat.io. I get too easily distracted by the other columns on Tweetdeck. :)
A4) I wonder why there would be a cost for a virtual PD. Who does the money go to? How much do F2F PDs usually cost?
A4: Honestly, I'm way less likely to pay for virtual PD. I tend to spend on the f2f PD-- I know free virtual is enriching/ low risk
A4 (1 of 2): I think one of virtual PD's biggest draws is that it's free
A4) paid would be okay if I had prior exposure to the presenter. Or if recommendations were solid.
A4: I guess for me personally, if it's a topic I would benefit from it's worth the cost.. Although, free is nice too!
A4-I try to first decide the potential impact on S learning before PD cost and then process the decision
A4: Free is if I want to. Paid is if I need to. But sometimes paid is if I want to
A4- I'd review the learning opportunities, speakers, outcomes, collaboration is a must
A4) Hard to put a price tag on learning. Definitely would pay for PD to find new resources and ways to improve my teaching.
A4: I wish all PD was free
A4: depends on the need and the content. If it makes us grow or our dept/school grow it is always worth it in the long run.
A4) I have only done twitter chats for virtual PDs. If it was a PD that I know would help me, I wouldn't mind paying for it
A4 Free is great but not deal breaker. Great PD is worth cost whether online or F2F
A4 (2 of 2): But as a presenter, the same amount (or more) work goes in, & they should be compensated appropriately
A4: Depends on the topic. If topic is high interest would consider pay. Also depends on the presenter.
A4: depends on the session itself is worth the investment
A4: I know how much work can go into creating a quality virt PD experience, but I'm guilty of bias towards free vs. paid
Q4) How do you determine whether virtual PD is worth the cost? Is free the only acceptable option? Why or why not?
Hi Carl from Emerald Australia
. Tx for the tip. I'm going to check it out b/c using the Twitter search is not productive!
Isn't it interesting that we don't have this info for many f2f but would vet for paid vritual
A4. Evaluate virtual PD as you would not virtual when choosing but as yourself, will I be distracted when it is happening
A4: have never paid for virtual pd. I think it would have to be worth credit or scechs to pay at this point in my career
A4: Deleted this posts a couple of times. Can't quite stay positive with it.
A4 (cont'd) maybe if what you were paying for included cool teaching tech... I'd consider it (if it was reasonable)
A4 Cost is such an anomaly 2 consider when the variable is the outcome: what can I immediately take back from this to my classroom?
A4) Free isn't the only thing to consider but would play a part in decisions. I wonder if it depends on a school's own budget too?
Teaching Reality Using Fantasy-Thurs. morning @ Macul. Woo Woo!
I've been really involved in a macramé course that takes up most evenings.
A4- Twitter & Hangouts are
LEAD TEACHERS and PRINCIPALS: Join - Tomorrow (Thurs Feb 18 at 8pm
TOPIC: "Growth Mindset for Educators"
Great point! And it seems like people are willing to pay to see the experts virtually.
A4: paying in person makes sense to me Bc you often receive resources, but I feel it would be difficult to "receive" them virtually
A4.2-can you actually deny a cost of it will move S forward?
A4: assess your areas of weaknesses, and see if that particular PD fits your need. Then determine if it is worth the investment
Joe from St Joe joining the last rush, ready for some virtual PD
A4 - I think first you have to have a strong set of goals for the PD. (Hint: engage x-number of teachers isn't a strong goal.)
Q5 coming up in 2 minutes
A4: It's hard to determine if virtual pd will be worth $. It seems that f2f has a greater likelihood of quality, in my experience
Welcome! Q4) How do you determine whether virtual PD is worth the cost? Is free the only acceptable option? Why or why not?
I have not tried virtual PD so I wouldn't know what would be worth paying for. For those of you who are ahead, what do you think?
A4: unfortunately with virtual pd, I have also run into many tech issues
A4.2-can PD be denied based on cost if it will benefit kids?
It is the presenter's time, they work. I don't think $ is bad and would rather pay reasonable fee then be flooded with vendor ads
If it's a known product or event people are more likely to pay--like an annual conf or a webinar with an ed rockstar
I think if you tailor behind the scenes, virtual PD can be highly effective, impactful, rich & interactive.
A4 It is worth the cost if it is of interest to you and helpful for your teaching/school culture.
Certain presenters that I admire I would certainly pay for, I think that would be a big factor for me
But engaging x-men teachers is a great goal. They can use their mutant for educational good. https://t.co/bzLUbxAstG
A4 - I think first you have to have a strong set of goals for the PD. (Hint: engage x-number of teachers isn't a strong goal.)
Q5) What are ways to make virtual PD more effective and ensure greater levels of transfer to the classroom?
I think the medium is so foreign to many that the presentation suffers & the participation suffers.
I really enjoy webinars. Check out this conference-- it's free and wonderful
Another benefit is they are recorded do you can watch again or pick up where you left off
Q5 is posted! https://t.co/Xjof6Vm5b8
Q5) What are ways to make virtual PD more effective and ensure greater levels of transfer to the classroom?
A4: Paying for virtual PD is useful when it provides additional resources but can prevents teacher communication
Technology is great, when it works. :/
That's true. And back to difficult to "read the crowd" virtually. Easier f2f in conference format
A5: Do interactive virtual PD with a small face-to-face group educators.
A5) It comes down to relevance. Do the PD outcomes meet you needs. And tech.
A5: Plan for activities that encourage collaboration among participants & allow them to try out whatever you're talking about
A5)I think it is difficult to find a virtual PD that has been helpful to my needs as a teacher.Maybe I don't have enough experience
A5: virtual PD should be ongoing w/ opportunities for reflection so that teachers can think about applying skills in their rooms
A4.1: Would be interesting to develop a simple virtual tip jar or way to micro-pay as a gesture of appreciation for quality virt PD
A5: If there is convo, know when to call it good if the convo dies out. Or have a back up plan ready!
A5: I think all PD (Virtual or F2F) is better when teachers are together. Accountability partners can be great for new learning!
A5 Virtual PD needs to show teachers how to apply things in the classroom. Can't just tell what, must show how
Q5) What are ways to make virtual PD more effective and ensure greater levels of transfer to the classroom?
A5 Specific topics/ purpose/outcome of convo is stated at beginning would be helpful for teachers to make that transfer from start
A5:in all pd's I'm looking for resources & examples to take back w me. Virtually I would want to see pics and how it was implemented
A5: sharing practical tips that can be used in the classroom the next day. And ideas that change the culture of the classroom
A5: some way to poll/survey audience beforehand. Helps to tailor your session. Find ways to engage beyond "type in the chat box"
A5: interaction! Webinars taught me it's crucial to keep your audience engaged before they drift off into a confused stupor
A5) I think it would be easy to have handouts in virtual PDs. Just a download/link can still be a helpful resource for the class.
A5: Make sure the expectations and norms are clear-- it makes a big difference
A5 - provide educators choices, virtual PD can provide meaningful supplement to prof. learning - check out https://t.co/0JUwn9mPcw
A5: For transfer to happen, virtual PD has to introduce a concept, show application, give resources for implementing & follow up?
A5b) Make sure tech is suitable to what the the participants have... resolution, timing, software, jargon
A5: A virtual pd that was wonderful last summer was , 3 days. I logged in and participated in STEAM education pd
A5: Get more school districts onboard- align to SIP goals. Have "follow up" discussions for more collaboration & time to process
virtual PD can provide access to additional resources that make it worthwhile
A5: For us it's baby steps. Have one department try it out and see what benefits and learning may come from the discussion.
A5 There needs to be a deliberate attempt to get attendees to report back their implementation of PD content.
A5 and one of great things about virtual PD that can lead to transfer is the personalized nature, it's easier to choose what I learn
As a student teacher, I am very interested to hear everyone's thoughts on this! I feel that effectivity and transfer are essential
A5: PD should be response to "something" specific as opposed to abstract idea that "someone" in education wants to put in place.
true! And disappointing when you have it and it doesn't
A5: In any PD, virtual or F2F, I'm always looking for practical advice/ideas on things I can implement right away.
A5: Our Michigan EdTech Specialists group does a virtPD round table discussion designed to be participant rather than expert driven.
if admin believes PD will move practice forward to benefit S, should money even be a concern?
No doubt it CAN be. I find that it isn't more often than it is, mostly because people's skill sets are not as strong.
when does this take place? Is it free? I would love to participate!
Completely agree. Need models for this too.
Provide opportunity for participation and include activities that would be beneficial and can be used in the classroom
A5: Tailored to needs & demographics of your building. Not drive thru learning. Continuous. Sustained. Collaborative.
A5) Make sure that there are ways to keep the audience engaged. Just like we would have for our students.
How would you suggest this happen?
A5 Have students take advantage of the networking in virtual PD just as they would for f2f. Use those teachers as future resources
A5-I'd love to see virtual PD incorporate personalized follow up through GHO or to ensure ideas are transferred
Shameless plug for this virt PD geared towared EdTech leaders and Edtech Specialists on 2/25 https://t.co/1PjTRX67xd
Final Q coming up in 2 minutes!
Q5: What are ways to make virtual PD more effective and ensure greater levels of transfer to the classroom?
Sure. F2f can provide the same resources though. Virtual's strength is in its accessibility.
Like formative PD assessments for teachers
Have to bow out early! Thanks, ! If you're free tomorrow at 8, check out to celebrate work and
A5 it's easy for people to sit back and just observe in PD. Find ways to create an online discourse so more ideas are being shared

yes! All I know about is , but please let me know if you find others!
I hear that. I've never carried on a relationship forged during a virtual pd. I've carried many from f2f.
A4) Just like f2f the worth is what I get out of it. Knowledge, connections, products, tools, development
Q5: As a student teacher, I am interested in other answers! I don't have first hand experience... Yet!
A5: I think it all depends on the presenter. They really need to be engaging, know how to read people and build relationships.
Q6) What virtual PD opportunities would you recommend? ...Share and plug away!
At least to start the session. I like to demo how I used formative assessment to guide at the end of session
great! I will look into it & sign up soon! Thank you!

A5 it's easy for people to sit back and just observe in PD. Find ways to create an online discourse so more ideas are being shared
A5) Follow up after the virtual PD with other Ts to share how it was used in the classroom and discuss how to improve.
