"Technology tools are often used to facilitate higher order learning activities that would not otherwise have been possible, or would have been difficult to accomplish without the use of technology." #TIMmatrix#XPLAP
A1 - Transform implies progress and growth. Students enter the class having demonstrated no abilities and leave the class showing new skills and abilities... Kind of like Spiderman getting bit by the spider... #xplap
So many things it can mean but for me the most powerful is when the Ss are empowered to pursue the learning in a way that is meaningful to them and then share it with others. #XPLAP
A1 Transform for my classroom is the transition from language arts into math and being able to do it at warp speed, #XPLAP (I have quite an imagination)...
A1 Transform means to completely change the way you do something, over the last year and half I have completely changed many of our learning experiences and responses #XPLAP

Gains can sometimes be slow and incremental. What is something you teach that truly produces a dramatic difference in what the students can do?
Hey Nick! I'm a bit under the stress of state testing at the moment... looking for fantastic #XPLAP#xplap chat to pull me out of the funk!... How are you doing?
A2: I am continually modeling and encouraging risk taking. Give them opportunities to leap and be there when they land. It's amazing how much growth happens outside of our comfort zones! #xplap

Transform means to change. For me it means to continually adapt and learn new things. For students in 6th who are constantly changing inside I hope that they find themselves open to learn #xplap#IHMarchMadness
A2) We start the year creating a class mission statement. It truly defines who we are and produces huge gains overtime. When we forget our "why", we head back to our mission statement. #XPLAP

Gains can sometimes be slow and incremental. What is something you teach that truly produces a dramatic difference in what the students can do?
I give problems. I disguise them as monsters in a game. I teach them to fight them. They become unafraid of problems in real life in the best cases. #XPLAP

I try to teach them how to be real world problem solvers and the tools necessary to make it happen. That is what I love about gamification is they need to figure things out on their own a lot of the times! Instills a growth mindset #xplap

A2) I try to show them it's ok to be wrong. I mess up all the time, and encourage them to look for my mistakes. If we all work together the final project gets so much better. #xplap
A2 I am always amazed by the power of an authentic audience and Ss identified issues. It makes such a difference when they know their work is for others and will make a difference. #XPLAP
A2 I sometimes wonder if the all the technology I introduce will make a difference but it is my passion and I hope that the Ss will have the tools to make their own dramatic difference in their future! #XPLAP
So true, Kathy. Our 6th graders are constantly evolving throughout the year. They are truly different s when they leave. Hopefully more confident, mature, and ready to conquer junior high. #XPLAP
Happy to be here! I was on a job interview today that ended up in me showing her how to twittwe chat. #xplap was the first that came to mind! AND it's 8pm central not eastern, so that helps.
A2: I teach a lot of personal reflection strategies! As my students learned to look more deeply at their own growth and progress, they became more confident in their own skills and abilities and their willingness to take on challenges! #XPLAP

I like the white jacket you are sporting, that's exactly how I feel this year with a mandatory Interm Test that my admin wants the students to take. #XPLAP (my suggestion - laugh with the students they need to now you are real too!)
A2: we spend a lot of time scaffolding Ss to use CER (claim, evidence, reasoning) tables in our science classes. The change in student responses is night and day once they begin to make arguments based in evidence and reasoning. #XPLAP
A2: I teach 6th grade which around here is the transition from Elementary to Middle School, so my job is to guide them out of their little kid ways toward their preteen and teen years. A lot of what they do now will stick with them for the rest of school. #xplap
A3: Each regional challenge in our Food Truck Race, I push Ss a little farther out of their comfort zones to try something new and I show them how I'm pushing myself too! Then, we reflect and celebrate together on our journey together!
#xplap
This is what I love about gamification! Getting students to figure out a clue without my help always makes me smile. Changing the role of the teacher for them... we are not just the giver of answers! #xplap
I try to teach them how to be real world problem solvers and the tools necessary to make it happen. That is what I love about gamification is they need to figure things out on their own a lot of the times! Instills a growth mindset #xplap
A3: Modeling, modeling, modeling! Often how I react to change is how my Ss will end up reacting. I try to take a deep breath and talk out loud through my coping process. They think I'm nuts at first, but it works! #XPLAP
A1: To change the way of thinking of math - not just a set of problems, but as real world situations and scenarios that deem the need for problem solving. Ss understand that they can use their problem solving skills to make changes in their community. #XPLAP
A2: I like the idea of teaching kids how to be both problem solvers AND problem finders. A lot of kids can solve a problem you give them or complain about a problem they see, but they struggle with putting the two together. #xplap
A2 I am always amazed by the power of an authentic audience and Ss identified issues. It makes such a difference when they know their work is for others and will make a difference. #XPLAP
A2: Growth mindset. Though I don't necessarily use that terminology, every day I set it as our norms that we all can fail forward, we will all struggle at some things, and we learn from our own and others' mistakes so that we can improve ourselves at whatever level. #XPLAP
@legendlearning Brandon, I started using CER this year as well. A huge growth overtime. Explaining the evidence was the trickiest. #Perseverance#Grit Great example! #XPLAP
A3 I've always had a bad experience with forced change. I try to see it as Zen teachings. The teacher just puts a good seed in a good soil. Faith in the Ss and patience should do the rest. The book Zen Shorts is HIGHLY recommended to get this right. #xplap
If you spend intentional time trying to make life (classroom life, too!) an adventure, change is something to be looked forward to. Without it, the adventure is gone.
#XPLAP
A3: I thinks a good analogy is gaming and sports in general. Sometimes to gain ground to have to be able to change your strategy quickly. Sometimes to beat a boss you have to view a problem in a different light. Stagnation can make us weaker. #XPLAP
A3 My game has so many moving parts and I try to help the students find where they fit in the machine! I want every student strength to have a moment to shine. #xplap

As teachers, we are constructing meaning and forever changing the form of our student's thinking. How does students' perspectives change in class?
A3) Kinda nerdy, but I took @tonyvincent 's #ClassyGraphic class. I invited students to come i during lunch to watch his videos and do assignments with me. It was definitely a "let's learn this together" experience. #XPLAP
A4: Perspective on learning shifts from "I am compliant because I want a good grade, but I don't see the relevance" to "I am empowered because learning is challenging, meaningful, and fun!" #xplap
So hard!!! I was getting random quotes that barely related to the topic and zero explanation. Now they can analyze the question and use CER appropiatey. #XPLAP
A4: With the elementary aged group, I have recently been observing some Ss becoming more intrinsically motivated, while others still need candy.Gamification REALLY helps develop Ss instrinsically :-) #xplap

Love this example. We have a lot to learn from the major video game companies that manage to hook people and make them drill & practice for hours to master a skill. I highly reccomend John Paul Gee's work. https://t.co/5O8yEGimR2#xplap
A4 I think Students perspectives change when they have choice and voice, they are more empowered by having choices. MOre excited and engaged to learn too š #XPLAP
A3 our wax Museum of Influential Person of Utah - this was a big hurdle for many of my students who had stage fright! They rocked it though ... I pushed their ābuttonsā they embraced change. #xplap
A4 Ss realize very quickly in my class that it's about creating knowledge rather than consuming. I try to model this by creating my own youtube channel https://t.co/l3PGy6YFRx and taking risks #xplap
A4: Most of my students have been playing school for a long time. Pulling back the curtain of āeducationā a little bit can help students see the way they view their learning may not be whatās best for them in the long run. #XPLAP
A3: change is hard for everyone. Recognizing the slight improvements and efforts though help my students to understand that the changes they make aids in their successes. #XPLAP

A4) I think the biggest change I see in my Ss is the shift from being compliant to having their own voice, making decisions, and being in control of their own learning. They see themselves as independent thinkers when they leave. (I hope.) #XPLAP

Here was one of my lit circle discussions this year! The passion amazes me!

A5: Again, the tool I most frequently use is the TIM Matrix (tech integration matrix) which has levels of integration and learning environments. I plan the standards, think of the tool to use and reference the matrix. https://t.co/ppnVWJqv5G#XPLAP
A5: learning is more powerful when the Ls discover the learning. We need to craft opportunities for them to create meaning on their own and then share out their discoveries. #xplap
A5: I agree with @tishrich I love me a good storyline. Makes the content and activity more engaging and rich. You earn bonus respect from me if you know what the gif is from! #XPLAP
A5 ~ This is a hard one! I don't always nail this right. Most of the times what I try to do is to have fun myself with the lesson. I ask myself: Is this something fun for me? And if it is, then I usually am in a good path. A G5 student thought me that! #xplap

And creators of content. It is powerful for them when they can create a resource for peers to use to learn. I love having them share lessons for next year. Need to gamify, maybe. Voices to the future from the past. #XPLAP
I am actually creating a three week online course taking a deep dive into the TIM Matrix as an assignment for my grad school Online Learning class. DM me @techy5teacher for more info if you're interested! #XPLAP

Planning for playful learning is intentional. Youāre reflection asking yourself if it is fun is an important step. I think you are doing better than you know. #XPLAP
A6: The team dynamic in my class is powerful. Ss realize the important role they play and the collaboration and bond that is created is amazing! #xplap
A5 Easier said than done, but when you give a lesson in the front of the room, and the lesson continues as you walk away ... Or when the Ss follow your walk not just your talk, #XPLAP than you can look back on the wake you have made...
A5 I love taking my students on learning experiences from broken time machines to a visit from a creepy character to a Great Medieval Race. My students never know where we will go next! #xplap
A6 I strongly believe in both mutual respect and support for everyone in our class community. I model it and expect it. We all have strengths and weaknesses #XPLAP
A6: We conduct family meetings every day (if not, every other day) to continue the sense of chemistry (which has been challenging this year) and mutual respect. Also allows time to reflect on "game strategies". #xplap

A4: In teaching that Ss can learn from their struggles, Ss can go from being shy about asking questions to questioning even my own responses. Love it! #XPLAP
A6: I think a person can learn the most about themselves when they fail and have to pick themselves back up. Taking the stance of failure as a āfirst attempt in learningā letās Ss grow quickly and firmly forge their character. #XPLAP
Transformation happens though when the Ss become the Ts and the Ts become the learner ... it's happening more and more I can't keep up with them, i.e. one student taught me about @piskelapp another student is testing out Google Hangouts #XPLAP (I'm getting out of their way)
A6: In the Music classroom, it's all about working together towards a common goal...students work in small "sectionals" to help keep their "family" supported. We also work hard to use our talents to help others...charity work, visits to Sr's homes, community events, etc. #XPLAP

#XPLAP Being collaborative changed everything: when me #mysteryskype with other they wanted to share what they were reading or what projects they were working on. Everything was shareable!
A5: Making the content relatable to the lives of the students. Be it by showing its relevance in the real world or by making it something they really enjoy. We did a digital breakout last week and they loved it! #XPLAP

It's the modeling at the BOY that sets the stage. Mutual respect and genuine happiness with successes are the norm. Love spontaneous clapping for peers. What grade do you teach? #XPLAP
As a first year gamification-er I have many questions. How do you end the game? How do you balance academic rewards with game rewards, what are youāre favorite items/power Ups? I just love learning from this crew #xplap

A6: As an IB World School, I try to instill our learner traits in our Ss even in our math we do - being reflective, critical thinkers, communicators, caring, and courageous are just a few things we discuss to help build their character. #XPLAP
LoL, and trying to find enough dice (after finding several scattered in the corners of the room) after trying a math dice game. It all works, but I could still use some pointers. #XPLAP
Words right out of my mouth. But sometimes I feel #xplap is shifting to more advanced gamifiers and that they will get bored by us wanting topics they've already been doing for years. Thoughts?
