My pleasure. Tuesday's are a busy day-night for me!
so was the wife - she was in Vancouver w/ friends. I had a quiet house :)
A1 If it helps students move toward the goals we've set, I'm all for it. If it is just to fill time, no.
And retweet it several times next week?
A1 For me - I rarely show an entire video. Small chunks that can be discussed at length work so much better!
A1: I love to use videos as a way to visualize the words I'm talking to my Ss about. Video is powerful!
videos should be used to gain perspectives of others while also allowing for connections within the curriculum
A1 clips in everything, full length in few, references always. video= connections. nothing is too small
A1 I think videos can be amazing. Sometimes a video can explain a topic better than a T. It can also provide humor.
A1: Videos should ALWAYS entertain and ALWAYS be a part of curriculum. Anything else is babysitting.
100% agree - I've never understood how Ts show 40 min. videos and expect Ss to get info out of it w/o feedback
A1) Only small clips and with pausing and talking. Never let students zone out. I put their attention span at 3-4 mins 😊
A1: I like using videos to introduce a topic or reinforce an idea. I find it creates buy in for my students
A1 I believe it's a huge resource, it gives Ss the ability to see the ppl, places &a culture they are learning about.
A1: Videos are great, but need to have an objective, don't play a video without knowing the final goal/reason for playing it
A1: Videos are meant 2 expose students 2 a way of life they've never imagined. They're to update, keep informed, and enlighten
A1 -- Ss today are so visual video helps tap into that and grab their attention.
A1 There tends to be a "-" connotation with videos, but there are places/times for video professional to show off the world.
I NEVER show anything longer than 120 seconds. https://t.co/iLGpMglIXV
A1 For me - I rarely show an entire video. Small chunks that can be discussed at length work so much better!
Yep. I used to try to leave videos for subs, but the Ss get nothing out of it without context!
A1 cont. If a picture is worth a thousand words than 24 frames a second with sound has the potential of more.
A1
Any tool used in class MUST have a purpose 2 help students. So,
If using video/flipped/et al helps u accomplish... great!
A1: I prefer short clips over videos that take up the whole class period. Finding the right one is key!
Love it! I might get up to 4-5 minutes before I pause and discuss - but 120 secs might be more accurate!
Agreed 100% as its hard for subs to teach how we want it taught.
A1: Only full-length video I've shown is all of Gandhi. Captivated 7th graders from beginning 2 end. Boy that movie's long...
A1 I'm all for showing all of a video (broken into chucks) to spark discussion, debate, more questions.
a1: I like finding short clips, let Ss watch the entire thing, then watch a 2nd time w/ processing ?s
No doubt! Have to keep things moving and engage in the content!
A1 I always find it intriguing when teachers show lengthy videos with no way of checking for understanding.
ah yes! I was right about you !
120 seconds just seems to fit!
video for video sake takes away from the topic. the right video increases interest and buy in.
we're twitter, maybe 140 seconds instead? :)
A1 if it makes sense-yes! If it is a "filler"...no! Well, except for those real special days! 😜
No doubt! I find myself spending lots of time looking for that clip that is just right!
Absolutely - and if a picture is worth 1000 words, what is a video worth? Right ?
Never thought about that! Lol.
Videos over 5 minutes become counterproductive in the classroom if the goal is to spark a discussion https://t.co/LFwXqDcJr4
A1: I prefer short clips over videos that take up the whole class period. Finding the right one is key!
A1 depends on my purpose. sometimes only 15sec. Other times 8-10min chucks 2 practice note-taking or maybe whole film+reflect
Yes!! Worth it though! After a while, I'm like, maybe I should just make what I'm looking for!
Agreed! If I ever show a lengthier video, guided questions are answered, then an overall REFLECTION
A1 I have shown a movie on how to use to build content.
A1) Started assigning vids for HW - found most Ss will watch (on phones usually) & helps to have better class discussions
Few full length videos I show are wrap up to check ifSs can apply concepts to real world. Good AP skill practice
Need to do this more. Students always amazed what they catch with a 2nd viewing! Same is true for reading!
used correctly? it could mean life learning
For the record, I'm 2 minutes behind on Q1. Great start to
A1.5: Check out Discovery Atlas by Channel. 45 mins each, kids LOVE them. L.O.V.E.
They call me RougeOne. I built it
let me know if the lesson needs any clarification.
and... That's awesome!!! Thx for checking it out.
Having Ss reflect on video + then write reflections has great potential in the right situation
I'll have to look at that!
need some Ss leaders - let them press play while you're there too :)
A1 sometimes the video would be 30-45 minutes at that point Ss would do a KWL chart before, during and after.
Ditto fingers already moving too fast
so very very good! Ss ask to watch all of these.
Absolutely - support each other in
Right?! Incredible stuff.
The conversation is so good I forgot to drop Q2 -- coming up now....
hey ... it's Ashley from deep south TX (joining in a bit late)
gonna catch up!
They also journaled about video clips like this.
I'd add that during the 30-45min video, I'd monitor class and break it up if necessary
Ken from Western Oregon Univ. Just arriving home after daughter's ballet
YAY!! Watching this original now :)
A2 Use WHATEVER works to meet the target of the lesson! News clip, archive footage, documentary, YouTube of someone's vacation
Meeting students where they are. flexible assessments! GOLD STAR! https://t.co/wDBF0aNgi3
or even let Ss pick a way to self eval. Could be through art, slogans, song, blog, vlog etc.
A2: Videos must be thought-provoking. Gives students a sense of wonder
A2: ALL must pertain to curriculum. I am not a glorified babysitter nor do I strive to be. Movie clips, DiscAtlas, YouTube chs
A2 (Cont) Criteria? Have some connection to lesson - even commercials from other countries are great!
A2: Videos must be relatable. I teach middle schoolers, so the wording and concepts shouldn't be TOO abstract
A2 subject related &entertaining; must be appropriate. Discovery and YouTube have tons of different video clips.
A1 Keep short! 15 secs - few minutes. There are exceptions for longer, but few & far between
- I showed McDonald's commercials today bc we're discussing globalization!
A2 Check they are current and reputable Some sources:
A2 Has to be well done. Bad video just makes highschoolers laugh and critique how THEY would have done it better on snapchat
A2 Does the video help better transfer a concept or spark greater discussion compared to another medium.
are THE best videos. My students love them!
A2 (cont) As a board member - I'd have to say that does AMAZING work showing global vids
a2: for all my purposes, vids/ music need to be authentic and give proper attribution to the creator of the content.
I need to watch this - went to Cambodia last year - eye opening in so many ways!
A2: I'm showing the CNN Student News more often these days. Kids love it, abt 10 mins, different every day
Ted Talks are great video resources for so many subjects/topics
A2: MUST have an engaging narrator. MUST be short. MUST incl highly engaging images. Go-to: NPR and Crash Course Kids on YT
My goal drives what I use. If I want to introduce I like if I'm reviewing crash course or news clips for convos/debate
A2: I usually use videos to launch a new PBL ... Ss are drawn into the content & then discuss logistics
A2 I LOVED using until our district got ride of it this year. Now rely on and
A2:I usually start on YouTube. If I start zoning out within 2 min,I know they will, too.Use to get rid of ads&comments
Do you ever discuss what is left out?
A2: I use YouTube(TeacherTube/QuietTube)
Must b connected 2 learning outcomes
Ss can nominate a vid
I research tons of vids
better than me - I give it 20 seconds tops :)
That is awesome! Did you use McDonalds commercials from other countries?
I'm also a HUGE fan of CNN Student News ... Ss practice their summary skills & analysis of geo significance of segments
A2 sorry forgot to label my answer https://t.co/6ETSUnYjI6
My goal drives what I use. If I want to introduce I like if I'm reviewing crash course or news clips for convos/debate
do you find news channels to be bias though?
That would be a great chat topic!
we do this daily in our class!
Favorite for your class? (Danger of a Single Story is mine)
I've been to Cambodia. It's 1 of the most beautiful places ever, but yes, definitely eye opening!
Engaging narrator is essential! https://t.co/SN0M4RoVBh
A2: MUST have an engaging narrator. MUST be short. MUST incl highly engaging images. Go-to: NPR and Crash Course Kids on YT
Depends on the outlet. CNN Student News seems to be fair and balanced (pun intended).
Agree - the biggest takeaway I had was in a city of 3 million, I saw 2 traffic lights.
TEDEd is a great resource for using video in a classroom RT https://t.co/45zoqGP3FZ
My goal drives what I use. If I want to introduce I like if I'm reviewing crash course or news clips for convos/debate
Awesome! Thanks so much Ashley!
I have met a few from there over here, the are "workers" here.
These are some of the best ways to illustrate cultural differences
A2 Criteria:fit learning goals?Engages Ss in way other methods won't? Here's source recently found https://t.co/cGxutSmw6f
We are 15 minutes from HQ - I've always wanted to get a guest speaker to talk about this
I need to dig deeper into the vids. https://t.co/95xr5S62D9
TEDEd is a great resource for using video in a classroom RT https://t.co/45zoqGP3FZ
My goal drives what I use. If I want to introduce I like if I'm reviewing crash course or news clips for convos/debate
- My Green School Dream & My Escape from N. Korea really engage Ss interest
You might get lost in there. I lose hours of my life in TEDEd videos
That is a great idea Chris!
Haven't seen the Green School one - must watch tomorrow!
getting my morning thumb exercises in! 💪🏻💪🏻
Wasn't aware of this one. Thanks Ken!
- multiple uses ... analysis of pop stats & beliefs on menu options, comparison of menu options, purpose
I want to have my Ss create their own vids. https://t.co/dAqXXau6gZ
You might get lost in there. I lose hours of my life in TEDEd videos
I write one tweet and then I'm behind by 35 tweet lighting it up tonight!
A3: No full length movies for rewards. Videos must enhance curriculum.
A3 No… and if I had manage. I would request a field trip to Aleppo, Syria to study migration.
A noble goal... and you should share them here when you do it. Start a TEDEd Club at your school!
A3: We have some restrictions, but it isn't difficult to abide by bc I limit length of videos to the key events
A3: We r required admin permission on anything > 45 mins. Totally cool w/ this. Stops bad Ts showing 90mins of mindless disney
This has been my goal for 2 years now. Going to make it happen soon.
I came across it about a week ago when somebody shared it on twitter or Facebook
Connect with who is beginning a TedTalk club at our school
Wish more educators would think like this!
A3 Thankfully, no restrictions on video for me, but is an AMAZING tool to clip videos and make them USEFUL!!!
Boom. https://t.co/QZTjFhdFf3
A noble goal... and you should share them here when you do it. Start a TEDEd Club at your school!
A3 no restrictions but encouraged to use QuietTube to remove youtube banners and other distracting stuff
- this is such an AMAZING idea ...
Thanks. I'll look him up!
Love this - videos show what Ss wouldn't otherwise see. Perfect!!!
A3 BMS wasn't limited, where I'm at now there R censors & blocks on some content & topics of discussion R choosen carefully.
A3: No restrictions! Wahooooooo
A3 When was HS teacher, district's criteria was if wasn't on list 2 other Ts had to watch &sign off on being curricula legit
A3.1: full length videos must be approved prior, but as long as you can prove relevance and it's school appropriate it's ok
I started one at my old school before I moved.
At BMS rating was a limit, and I meant videos not discussions lol!
I WISH we had this policy -
A3: Obviously, restrictions included language and content. But overall, our school encourages connections to all
Wait - this is a real thing??? I want in!!!
A 3 -- Rating limits only -- PG-13 with parent perms form, R -- never ok, not even clips. Not difficult to work with at all.
A3.2: for any video regardless of length my students are answering questions based on the video to keep them from zoning out
That's fair. A little time consuming though.
awesome new policy!! Do you still show Discovery Atlas?
Seriously, I can't say enough about - check it out - FREE!!!!
- tell me more!!! This is such an awesome idea!
Can't possibly catch up. But I can join in. Jim, 7th grade world geography from MA
Used short clip of Hercules 2 help understand creation myth and Hrcle's labors w/ more research
- thanks! definitely going to look into this bc it's something that I've been interested in!
A1 only shirt videos. 10-15 minutes tops. The discussing them w/ SS.
Always looking for more stuff on N. Korea! Ss LOVE it!
Completely agree!! rocks my world. https://t.co/sOePQuczrv
Seriously, I can't say enough about - check it out - FREE!!!!
Random question to ... How can you NOT use during an ? Is this even capable from a phone?
I've just been lurking and it's hard to keep up! Can't even tweet -just like and retweet👍 https://t.co/6ILoWZeywR
I write one tweet and then I'm behind by 35 tweet lighting it up tonight!
a4: on top of ideas shared already, I have Closed Captions on as well.
Not sure of reliability as usually ended up being Ts trusting a colleague's judgment & signing off w/o watching.
So much student involvement it was an amazing experience.
A clip is perfect - we have Ts who take 3 days to show the whole thing!
- there's another North Korean defector's story as well ... great material for discussion
thats what I'd assume would happen. just trust the Ts sometimes...
I'm fine w/ clips. I use a clip of Rocky IV to illustrate Cold War tensions
We should share videos (now that I'm making them :) )
The TedEd site gives you all the info you need. Involves application process which includes a video conference.
A2: only videos that are related to the topic w/ meaningful message.
A4: video guides/ questions for discussion. I find when students know/ have the purpose ahead of time they can focus better
Setting a purpose key
View at own pace using
Pausing & partner discussions
Compare notes afterwards w/ partner
A3: anything longer than 20 mins I would discuss w/ admin. It must be meaningful!
A4 I may have mentioned this a few times, but I use - allows me to add Qs, oral annotations, & so much more to video
Such a great strategy for ELL and Sp Ed students to build skills
I'm on my phone but I only have the hashtag pulled up. https://t.co/6FEVODp51l
Random question to ... How can you NOT use during an ? Is this even capable from a phone?
just one more exposure to written language :)
A4: online discussion/reflection Qs, also the 3-2-1 method (3 things you took away, 2 things to share w/ partner, & 1 Q)
Thanks man! I'll dig in this week. https://t.co/4ViUiG76bQ
The TedEd site gives you all the info you need. Involves application process which includes a video conference.
A4 I'm like a poor mystery science theater 2000 host alway interupting. That + notes aligning the concept
A4.2: using the videos as a hook for a debate is also one of my faves. Students love debating and structured arguments
Join in! It's so much better than lurking!!! :)
mind blown! Didn't know about this
A4: class discussion before/after, journaling, kwl charts, movie bingo (have to listen/see certain things).
A4: Embed/link videos into to either spark, enhance, or challenge thinking.
Just wait unit I make an on water. Then finish the whole bar!
A4: turn & tlk. Exit tix. Flipped instruction w/ quick quiz. Video critic/ reviewer SS can rate video.
A2: Ss respond best 2 clips <4mins. Longer vids need much built in structure. But how do you NOT show entire Gandhi film?
A2. Late to the game tonight; for short, interesting videos. Just enough to peak interest and start discussions.
I'd show Finding Nemo for our Australia unit.
I love the idea of Movie Bingo! KWL charts are a huge tool for students
Create a column in TweetDeck and have it search for and watch the awesome sauce rain down... :)
Did bad presentation BINGO to teach presentation skills. Need to try with video clips! Love the idea!
I set multiple tabs on my laptop and/or hootsuite.
i like the idea of moving the discussion online. Ss that don't often speak up in class will participate.
A4: Have Ss critically reflect on the video, ask what they learned, what they liked/didn't like, what they agreed/disagreed
even the oldest of students love games! I teach college level Arabic students and we play Boggle!
A4 Forced my class to watch the school board discuss school boundary changes. Then they created this. https://t.co/3gwlk973Kb
- it's awesome to see Ss debate on the discussion thread
A4. Open up a Padlet while the video is going and upload some graphic organizer- Venn Diagram, T-chart- reflect in realtime
Bad presentation BINGO. Love it! https://t.co/eFA9hB41gk
Did bad presentation BINGO to teach presentation skills. Need to try with video clips! Love the idea!
Any time I get can use Disney in class and it's meaningful, I'm happy
fake it 'till you make it :)
I mean - I could show Tangled & say its an allegory of North Korea I guess.
. so true! Used as back channel before! Need to do it more!
- a colleague of mine loves nearpod!
Important to give quiet students a chance to roar. GOLD STAR https://t.co/dSkQNdBkXW
i like the idea of moving the discussion online. Ss that don't often speak up in class will participate.
- we're not a Google District, so I use Schoology to create discussion threads
also consider Aladdin for arab stereo types! i use first 10 min.
A4: I'm having Ss analyze political ads for techniques used to sway voters.
I'm gonna sucked into this...
Oh never thought of that! AWESOME!
Student engagement comes in all shapes and sizes, including using well loved videos https://t.co/cMYDydStfm
Important to give quiet students a chance to roar. GOLD STAR https://t.co/dSkQNdBkXW
i like the idea of moving the discussion online. Ss that don't often speak up in class will participate.
Using Disney in The Geo Classroom - future topic?
A5: Ss created stop motion video to review Water Cycle. Another T used green screen video so Ss could record weather forecast.
I'm learning a great deal about looking to buy for my dept. Fave new tech tool.
A5 End of year project High School Identity using 360 images and sound. Maybe try 360 videos this year.
A4: Asking open ended ?s 2 help Ss search 4 deeper understanding. ?s delineate focus & attention especially w/ new info.
A5 Can use to have Ss demonstrate Geo Themes & Nat Geo standards at the local level
A5: We have a Film Festival! Ss make short films, we judge them & had out awards like the Oscars!Always a great night.
A5: I just had my AP world kids create mini videos on Ancient India in groups and then made it into a class documentary
Stealing this idea. Awesome.
https://t.co/hGrIkFDXFg
A4. Open up a Padlet while the video is going and upload some graphic organizer- Venn Diagram, T-chart- reflect in realtime
A5: Ss create videos ALL THE TIME ... from commercials for food trucks to emergency broadcast
Disney, Pixar, claymation animation.... :)
Any of you want to moderate it? 100% serious.
A5 Didn't have the chance 2 B4. Trying now - Ss create a Public Service announcement (I teach Eng 4 Fire Safety)
A5: Ss create live action, , stop motion, screencasts, RSA style, Common Craft style. You name it.
I <3 using the pixar shorts - great length and so much content!
And now 8 minutes behind.
A5 iMovie has a newsreel template that Ss used w/greenscreen, shot on iPads about one of five prepared investigation topics
with 8 minutes left. seems legit
I can see this as a HUGE part of PBL
A5. Student used WeVideo to investigate world cultures and religions. Took some time but were great!
Got to leave a bit early tonight Thanks as always for a terrific chat!
A5: w/ qr codes to make argument for/ against joining EU.
- my Ss love Powtoon bc it's so easy to use
A5 Ss created Crash Course videos for APUSH should have geo Ss do the same.
A5 we love ! Ss can go anywhere in the world!
- yep, there's almost always a multimedia component in each video bc it requires Ss to educate others
Heard it mentioned on Looks awesome. Want to check if it works on Ss devices
. Just showed CC for APHG today on human migration
also analyze orig lyrics of arabian nights, disney changed lyrics
That is awesome! Do you have any examples? Would love to see them!
Yup! . any way to help Ss tell a story
Keep coming back to . We like you here.
First time in the and it was a blast. Later everyone.
We were having that exact discussion about the EU in class today!
With authentic music, accurate video content, and the right ?s we can transport Ss around the globe. https://t.co/HbZmhKzu9l
I had forgotten they did that.
Its harder now than it used to be. can you weigh in on this?
that would be awesome! Don't know about moderating though might not wake up in time.
A6: I show this on the first & last day. Shows kids how far they've come over the course of a year. :) https://t.co/gyJATe0qcH
Have not yet...but will now. Thanks
I'm fascinated by little tidbits like this. The difference in lyrics r intriguing
You'll have to tell me more about this!
thanks to for the virtual poke-in-the-ribs tonight :) have a good week,
A5: currently editing the video of my classes documentary I'll post it once it's complete
Used 2 use this+would get stuck in my head for days. Teaching Latitude/Longitude posted on my website https://t.co/yZlHponmGx
A5: Do any of you know or use a collaborative video program for Ss to use as they create?
yes you can (at least you used to be able to. Dialog boxes are html ready
Oops. previous should've been A6.
A6: currently editing my classes video. I'll post it once it's finished
Use that one too! EZ if you got the right attitude!
yep, just watched human migration today
Last year ss took it upon themselves 2 try & memorize the rap. It was an awesome experience. Kids love this
One of my favs, too. actually all of his talks are amazing.
Glad you popped up on my feed!
seems to be a video favorite
interested in project 4ur Ss? Investigate poaching of cultural music on YouTube then write a letter 2publishers. DM email addy
Easier to use My Maps with videos these days. Still can get away with a some embed codes
Thanks so much What an awesome chat! Thanks to everyone that joined in! I hope you all have an amazing week!

Two claps for - great job tonight!!!

Awesome chat tonight! You guys rock! I wish I could be in your class!
because that's about my attention span, as well... https://t.co/lMHYEtEaJd
A1) Only small clips and with pausing and talking. Never let students zone out. I put their attention span at 3-4 mins 😊
Saw u mention the trade duels on Twitter How does that work? Would love to try w/ my Ss
Used this for many yrs--very effective!
