A1 My school is unique because it is full of brand new baby Ts. I remember as a kiddo only having 1 new T k-12.
A1 our school is surrounded by houses in the community...and we bring a family atmosphere to the school everyday!
Penny KCS Pinch and Kenna Tech Coach Looking forward to seeing the kids and trying now things
it looks participate has the images messed up, give me a second to get those back in order
A1: 1:1 roll out with MacBook Airs at the 9-12 level
Hugs to you both! Lovely to see you two grow as aspiring leaders in edu.
Awesome! Share some pics with us dude!
Good evening all! Amber Matty- KCS Tech Facilitator
A1: My school is unique because I am there. I will push what is best for the students, not the staff. But mainly because of me
Randy did you mix up the Qs on me?! lol
A1: I fill my team with bucket-fillers. We are all about empowering each other!
So sweet!! Thanks! Love learning w you!
A1 The one doing all the work. Who's working harder? You or the learner?
OOH! I'm jealous. Did it com with lots of PD for Ts? The best we can do is some Chromebooks and old iPads.
A1) we are one of only 4 STEM schools in WV. we have a very diverse and growing student pop. We also have an amazing faculty.
Becky from Hampshire County - 5th Grade - I'm excited to try out the "new" tech ideas I've been learning about at
Sorry all I scheduled A1 responses for the wrong Q1 :)
OMG! Yes! Be a bucket filler and surround yourself with bucket fillers! https://t.co/uQlEncfzL3
A1: I fill my team with bucket-fillers. We are all about empowering each other!
Shawn Hawkins, AP Woodrow Wilson High School
The best kind of team, that builds you up instead of tearing you down.
yes - have been on the journey for 2 years
so jealous! Enjoy something for me but watch out for those huge cars haha
Kim Goff, WV based Math Consultant with the Southern Regional Education Board, listening to Chopped Jr as I lurk during my 1st
A1 I am lucky to be in 2 great schools where it feels like family
Beth, Kevin could hold some serious PD 4 othr trainers & tech coaches. He's designed gr8 opps for his Ts.
A1: Only 3 years in at a brand new school, TONS of support & energy
Sorry I'm late. I'm Brian Moats and I'm a former TIS and current K-5 music teacher.
That's awesome. I'd be excited, too : )
At least is talking to you. I saw him today, yelled his name across the room, and he just walked on.
Sigh. I can only dream ...
A1: I'm part of a team that is changing the future of ed through 1:1 coaching and innovative & meaningful PD best job ever
A1 my position is unique as I am the HS LMS and the public library director. Work w ages 0-100 daily!
Hi all! James here from Columbus, OH. Middle grades Science teacher ready to listen and learn!
A1: The culture of any community makes it unique, but the culture of Jackson Co is one of togetherness
A1 my school is unique because we are diverse. It really is who we are and we embrace it to create a school family
TRUE! You guys are rocking it!
A1: My back to school is going to be unique - I'll be doing action research this fall!
The students should ultimately own the learning, it just takes time to get there
Hi Kim! Glad you could join!
I had a few years of that family feeling! Best years of teaching I ever had!
A2) we are making a shift to ensure that everyone Ss, Ts, & Ps own the learning.
A1: As a TF in KCS, I am pretty lucky to visit all the schools in the district. Each one has unique Ss & Ts that make it special!
A2: EVERYONE should own the learning! We should be life-wide learners!
A2: everyone - there is a circle on influence/ownership
A2 I hope the kids. If they aren’t invested they aren’t learning.
A1) Unique, because we are super close knit, and celebrate all the time!
A2 Everyone should be a learner, Ts, Ss, and admin. We all own our own learning.
A2 I used to think it was me, now i realize that the whole class, school, and staff should learn from everyone!
A2 I think overall, we're out of balance right now. Not enough convos, abt those skills, occurring n school.
A1: We can never get to 100% student ownership with state mandated standards. But we can always be striving for that.
A2: Ideally, my students, but I try to learn from every situation.
A2: even thought i'm out of the classroom now, i always tried to place learning ownership in the students hands
A2: Depends on what you mean. Ts should own their own prof growth. That should lead to some great teaching = S owned learning
Q2A Learning seems to be embraced by the top students. PLC trnng. W/ Erik Twadell today. How to get my tchs to embrace learning
A2: The winner owns the learning. I still am learning, the students are learning
great question! have any ideas or insights?
Good point. Everyone owns his/her learning. We retain what we own.
A2: I tend to think the learner owns the learning because you can't call yourself a teacher if your kids aren't learning.
A2: Learners own the learning! Ss, Ts, & Admin all own their own learning! Ts are facilitators.
A2: Ss should naturally want to own the learning because the Ts make it meaningful, engaging, and purposeful.
I like that term "life-wide learners"
A1. I'm at a new school this year. I want students to enjoy making quality music, not just passively consume it.
Yeah. We should never feel we are "done" with a moldy binder of worksheets. Or "digital worksheets" and gDrive.
A2) Everyone is accountable from students, to teachers, to PSPs, to resource, to PSPs, to the principal. -ownership
So funny--we all seem on the same page.
LOVE that! We are in an age where Ss should be creating more than consuming!
A2: Ts need to take control of their own professional learning and never stop. Don't become complacent, be magical.
A3: I try, but when I taught 8th grade, the fun of learning was already taught out of them and it sucked
A3: sadly, a vast majority do not. That's why I'm looking forward to seeing some !
A3 My college composition 11th gr ELA will hit many of these. I'm figuring out how to work it into 10th w/new curriculum.
A3 I think at times we cover most of the "C's" but usually focus on one or two of them.
A3 I think overall, we're out of balance right now. Not enough convos, abt those skills, occurring n school.
A2: We as Ts should control the culture - let's Ss discover and choose the rest.
AQ3 NO, unfortunately. I see a lot of trad. classes. Love when kids are at the cntr and not guessing abt. Expectations
A3: I left TIS position so I can work directly with kids. So I certainly hope my classroom empowers students in many ways.
I apologize if I miss Q4... Gotta step away a moment...
Yes! https://t.co/NJuau6ONmK
A2: Ts need to take control of their own professional learning and never stop. Don't become complacent, be magical.
A2: Learning should be shared by everyone. Teachers and Learners are synonymous. We're all in this together!
A3: Ts should strive to provide opportunities for the 4 Cs. It's what's best for Ss!
if you need some tools to meet those, be sure to check out
A3 Working on it and hope to do even more this year. I think the students learned more and had amazing creations.
A3: I believe we need to start heading that way in educ. Ditch the textbooks, homework, etc and try new things! That's real world
The more Ts embrace their own personal learning, the more improvement u see overall. Great point
Q3: we should be working our way there- for sure! It's a process.
A3: Whose classroom? I believe mine did!
Yea Luke, I agree. It gets lost n the shuffle too often. Need convos like these to become commonplace n schls.
A2: Learners own the learning. Teachers AND learners are both responsible for creating the environment, intrigue, and opportunity
It's tough to get all 4 in one lesson. Even 1 is better than none!
A3 I know my music class fosters collab & contribution. I could always improve on communication, creativity, & critical thinking
A3: I so miss Learned a TON abt FACE (fam-comm-engagemnt)back n the good ole days when hosted that awsm chat.
A3: I was burned out as a TIS trying to convince teachers to empower students - I am slowly getting energized again.
been there; done that https://t.co/55pM4NulQM
A3: I was burned out as a TIS trying to convince teachers to empower students - I am slowly getting energized again.
Appreciate the vulnerability & honesty of that statement! I hope you ignite & inspire this year man!
A3) I think we're striving to incorporate those Cs more, and certainly notice it through recent p.d. making that push.
Made it! What did I miss?
A3: Classrooms only enable what we allow them. They are only tools by which we introduce our Ss to ideas & wondering.
Totally agree. It is a foreign concept for most unfortunately.
Think of it as "throughout this unit" rather than every day. 50 min is not enough time. Wish we had block.
even if you touched one teacher it’s better than zero!
Sorry for jumping in late, HS SPED from Akron, OH.
Sorry I am late! Going to try to catch up. Missy Ruddle, Asst. Super Kanawha County
I think we see 2 things- enthusiasm without implementation, and straight up lack of enthusiasm and implem
A 2(3) I wonder if our classrooms empower US to do those things?
STAR FISH! Do you know that one!
Hi, ! I'm on vacay @ Summersville Lake, with really crappy signal but wanted to say "hi"! CU next chat! https://t.co/GbQZGJJ2zG
Glad ur here Few days of summer go by when I'm not singing praises of KCS & others n ur team! https://t.co/xh1W0jTy2D
Sorry I am late! Going to try to catch up. Missy Ruddle, Asst. Super Kanawha County
A3: We need to do a better job at fostering a 5th C....Culture that allows the other 4 C's to thrive. Safe space for risk taking
So many do let's give them credit for https://t.co/q9ORRTVcWX
The more Ts embrace their own personal learning, the more improvement u see overall. Great point
you missed Q7 going out instead of Q1 to start!
I know I helped a lot of people but it was time to create my own space and work directly with kids again.
A4: You mean besides robocalls? hahaha
true. I try to encourage trying, make it known I don't expect perfection.
A4: Our school has an all-call system to provide general means of communication.
A3: Those of inspired, exhausted, dedicated, and collaborative educators that have mastered effective time-bound tasks do!
A3: Perhaps we can ask ourselves "Do we setup engaging challenges and supply all the tools Ss need to tackle them?".
A4: We are supposed to as a Title I school, but I have rarely seen it happen
Have a great year! I can attest to the benefit of switching gears helping to reignite the fire.
Enjoy! Thanks for the beautiful sunset!
but do those really reach everyone? is it a real tool that makes a difference?
Haha! Helps for ELA, but I've seen some subjects like Math burn out w/block.
Q4: I know a lot of announcements from my new school go out on Facebook. That's how I'm learning what's going on.
A4: I so miss Learned a TON abt FACE (fam-comm-engagemnt)back n the good ole days when hosted that awsm chat.
Sorry, I missed the first 2! Kim McFall, Assistant Professor/program coordinator School Library. Marshall.
I totally agree. Can't get very far if you don't have a strong school culture/climate! Have to be supportive!
A4: Seriously, RvHS using to help become a certified school is a community statement
Getting rid of the textbooks is a great start. https://t.co/xCvG1COxjb
A3: I believe we need to start heading that way in educ. Ditch the textbooks, homework, etc and try new things! That's real world
A4 I ran our website & Facebook page, but burnt out w/grad classes & teaching college comp. Now it's our tech aide.
The all-call system is suppose to reach all, I can't speak to the effectiveness of our system.
Q4A comments w/ fam. Depends engrade, local news, Callout, and an admin. At every event for school Mostly.
It starts with the admin and trickles down. Growth mindsets are empowering for all.
A4: school - all calls, website posts, PTO FB page; my class we use SeeSaw and Class Dojo and keep in consistent contact
excellent point. Drink the kool-aid! Jump all in! Fear of failure or "one more thing" is killing the profession
Absolutely ....you know that I recognize that truly & don't mean to discredit anyone
A\Q4: How many of you have found success with Remind?
Thank goodness for tweetdeck! I was late, too.
We can record calls to send out to reach the masses but I wouldn't call it a plan.
A4 We have talked about that recently. Started a school Twitter account, also have monthly newsletters, Class Dojo, Remind
Q4: I see many schools using social media in a positive way to reach Ps & Ss.
kind of like the budget down there? lol
I do not directed at you by any means https://t.co/4fFitjTNM4
Absolutely ....you know that I recognize that truly & don't mean to discredit anyone
We have that, too, but parents loved the FB page. Harness social media!
Same. It's working very effectively here. https://t.co/eqQTWZAMaT
Q4: I see many schools using social media in a positive way to reach Ps & Ss.
Yes and.....do we give Ss choice to use their creative abilities to showcase their learning?
A4: so many ways to connect w families- remind, Twitter, emails, etc. You have to want to promote your school and do it!
A4 Also communicate with and Ps LOVE it! Have school webpage too.
A4: Certain teachers have remind, I've found it helpful with my own children. Not all have texting abilities.
Q4: I see schools using texts, twitter, facebook, regularly in our district to communicate. I can’t keep up with all the posts.
offers a school wide subscription model now, right?
A4: Let's not be afraid to evaluate our comm plans & weed out the methods families are ignoring. adapt to their needs.
A4) Calling system, cnty webpage, school PTO Fbook group, email exchanges, back 2 school night, teacher confs, mnthlynews letters,
Several Ts in my building swear by it. I feel sorry for Ss w/o phones, tho.
Q4: are great apps for parent communication! They make it fun!
haha might stand a chance at trending...rough
Yeah, not a debate I'm having tonight.
The key to communication is choosing the channels that the parent use. What works for one may not work for all
I learned the piece of F-A-C-E from Grab the history over ur school wide hashtag & share link w/all.
Kids love SeeSaw. Great way for parents to stay current with kids’ work. Kids own it. https://t.co/HYFOykXGqR
A4: school - all calls, website posts, PTO FB page; my class we use SeeSaw and Class Dojo and keep in consistent contact
True. Building effort. Everyone has to want it, or believe in it for the good of the school.
haha might stand a chance at trending...rough
What grade level uses ? We used Wordpress blogs last year but parents didn't look at them.
Our parents often comment on their child’s work as soon as it is posted. The look on the kid’s face is priceless!
Got ya! Good one. I see equal benefit. Nearly every generation uses cell phone often now. No downside w/
My Ss LOVE it! They ask all the time- can we post this on seesaw?
thanks!! I was running, but I made it!!
A good old fashioned phone call home does wonders. Very few educs do this until there is a problem! celebratetoo
We need more of this! media reaches Ps & community https://t.co/ceaEdzHV3B
Q4: I see many schools using social media in a positive way to reach Ps & Ss.
Giving a technology PD training the first day of school for teachers, please send me resources you love to use!
We used it last year K-4 and love it! Let me know if you need help
Q5A- CFA implementation in ELA and math. BOY, MOY and EOY. Support each other.
That's what it's all about!
A4: With the flooding, we have seen the value of social media in reaching out to parents and students and keeping them current.
A5 Nothing official. My admin talked up bellringers last year, and suggested incorporating ACT prep. Kind of boring.
I get insprtn for from A good call home = best med for weary T. https://t.co/vvuSN0Y2ox
A good old fashioned phone call home does wonders. Very few educs do this until there is a problem! celebratetoo
Social media needs to be seen as a great communication/learning tool for ALL educators!! https://t.co/G7ITWxm6L8
Q4: I see many schools using social media in a positive way to reach Ps & Ss.
love it! I think that's my new tag for every tweet. https://t.co/wbe3zN4Psp
haha might stand a chance at trending...rough
A5: STARS Reading & Math for diagnostics data k-12. Common assessments in the lower grades.
Best thing since sliced bread! When you have kinders who use it on their own you know it’s great
A5 Co teaching helps with formative assessment as well as grade level goals and standards
A5: PLC and collaborative planning are both ways we support formative assessment.
I agree on principle, but we have 3 phones Ts can use; makes calls a pain.Learned the hard way to never use my cel
A4: I also start the year with a parent questionnaire to get their thoughts and connect.
Absolutely! That's how I operate, I call in the good times and bad. https://t.co/kEFqfYEEkB
A good old fashioned phone call home does wonders. Very few educs do this until there is a problem! celebratetoo
A5: I'm actually convinced more Ts need some PD/ opps to review the role of formative assessment. :/
Thanks-I have 10th & 11th grade, so I'll have to think of how I'd use it.
Have to - that's key in relationship building! Gotta build trust!
A5: Digital portfolios and apps with instant feedback are great for formative assessments.
Bst warning to new Ts. B sure tht 1st call home is good one. ID those tough kids early&make the cal!
Teachers and administrators can always benefit from quality training on Formative Assessment. :)
Do you like STARS for the upper grades? We have 0 diagnostics right now.
How true, we could not get out the evening of the flood I was glued to
Always good to review summative and formative in PD sessions. Good to share formative assessment ideas, too.
Bummer. 😞I use my cell. Haven't had any problems.
A 4. I often have a hard time engaging parents in alternative education. Hoping to use social media this year to hook them !!
A Google Voice number is perfect for this. https://t.co/Ca7YluL0YM
I agree on principle, but we have 3 phones Ts can use; makes calls a pain.Learned the hard way to never use my cel
Yea, I think the role of 1-pace-fits-all comes into play often w/me. Bad summative assessment shldn't be a surprise.
Also hoping to Skype to connect our students with students from around the world.
Q5: Sometimes I think there's too much emphasis on quarterly benchmarks instead of smaller, more focused formative assessment.
Q5) STAR benchmarks 3/year, Smarter Balanced review/discussion and growth grouping, PLC Data talks bi-weekly
Mr. Kelley has shared letters with the HHHS community almost daily through FB. So important to that community.
I totally agree! Every T has their own definition of formative assessments & how it fits their classroom. https://t.co/siwkqTCLhr
A5: I'm actually convinced more Ts need some PD/ opps to review the role of formative assessment. :/
FreshGrade is similar to SeeSaw but looks more secondary appropriate!
i don't think Google is letting anyone signup for new Voice numbers now. the service is supposed to be shadowed soon.
Had a mom save my contact and call me multiple times throughout the year, sometimes late at night. Grr.
A5: More observation through meaningful learning tasks will tell more than multiple choice quiz. shadow puppet edu
A5 Put & on your list this year! Awesome tools.
A6: make time to think! Between classes, planning, lunch, commute to and from work
I see some PD night trains in your future for our secondary teachers! You rock! https://t.co/tDQeQBnKmv
FreshGrade is similar to SeeSaw but looks more secondary appropriate!
Ideally before 1st day of school. Just bought postcards today ti send to Ss on my caseload!!
A5: is a great place to begin the conversation about evidence of learning. Continued and consistent FA is key.
We think alike! I my own too!
I'll second as a great tool for secondary
totally where I got mine!
A6: Provide Ss with opportunities for Voice & Choice...CREATE! What is the doing for students?
QA- wht. Space for all. I like pages with a ?. Let Ss, T's ans others, doodle, connect or leave what if...
Yes Beth, STARS in the upper grade, gives me some data to work with when writing an IEP. https://t.co/Mk2jR8tIUU
Do you like STARS for the upper grades? We have 0 diagnostics right now.
I'm very late, but catching up on the great conversations. Just got home from Tennessee... It was too hot!
Y'all are wonderful and I'm having trouble keeping up with my F2F convo and this one...but y'all are killing it!
A6 Reflection is super imp. for learning. Last yr, it was after 6weeks & multiple drafts. Nxt yr, during the writing process.
I'm struggling too!! Putting my wingman skills to the test.
A5: Sometimes a simple journal (paper and pencil) is a great space for Ss. My Bullet Journal is my creative space.
Too many Ts are scared of it. When used responsibly, it is a great tool!
A6: As a professional, you have to build reflection time into your day. Not good for you, your Ss if you don't
Cool. We've begged for this for approaching grade level readers. Not fair to guess at reading levels!
A5: I was thinking along the same line. https://t.co/mUGIFHBk1m
A5: Sometimes a simple journal (paper and pencil) is a great space for Ss. My Bullet Journal is my creative space.
A6 My evening walks are a time for me to reflect. Good for the mind and the body!
Close to 30 participants tonight. Reaching record status for us!
Q6A- Heaven help me...1 hour drive to and from wk. Lots of thinking, planning...
Students and teachers both need reflection time during the day. Always rethink and up your game plan. https://t.co/SYqAvAHoZA
A6: As a professional, you have to build reflection time into your day. Not good for you, your Ss if you don't
I don't put all my stock in STARS but it's a piece of the puzzle used to construct a comprehensive plan.
A5: summative and quarterly are great to assess strategies - formatives for immediate feedback and diagnostics for individual ss
My struggle is a 100 lb Golden Retriever on my lap/computer while I am typing. Scared of the rain.
A6 It’s is good for the Ss to reflect too. We are beginning a maker space and want to use for a reflection journal
A6 My whitespace comes during my drive to work. And intentional scheduling. Leave that calendar white! https://t.co/MuJBIwJWBQ
I can’t wait to see this! You have the best ideas! https://t.co/B8hd6nRKXD
A6 It’s is good for the Ss to reflect too. We are beginning a maker space and want to use for a reflection journal
A7: I think they might be a little young. Aren't there laws against that? ;-)
Ha! My 7 yr old had a running monologue about his tooth which finally fell out.
When your assignments provide real life applications, it opens a door to teach students HOW to think
A7: Absolutely! They are creative, critical thinking, problem solvers who are able to communicate!
A7 well i fired the boss of the past 3 years :-)...new management starting this year! I hope to employ ALL Ss
A7: absolutely if they are doing
A7: Yes! I believe in my Ss and their abilities. I want to see them successful & need to be their cheerleader! THAT'S what ed is!!
WHAT!!!!! An IEP needs good data to determine if the student is working towards their goal(s).
A7 I have, as a babysitter for my 2 kids. I respect them tons.
Reflection: If given the choice, would your students hire you or someone else? What's your legacy to Ss? https://t.co/WUyqdRI7dr
A7 I have...but, I want them to gave a growth mindset. If 1 T a say pushes, you don't see the adoption
A6 My Ss created anonymous word could at EOY describing me&my class 1 of the big wrds was self-analyzing.
I've found that my long drive really helps me with focus & ideas. Enjoy
A7: and I are looking at doing just that for 1:1 help desk!
Reading about tweet deck just today! Will peak at your tutorial 2! Thks in advance.
A6. We save time for reflection everyday after lunch. So have a portfolio the review/update
But if they're not on an IEP, then they're fine, right? Even if you suspect they can't actually read...
A7: I would be open to hiring former Ss, it is amazing to see
Ss mature over four years and then come back after college.
Me, too. : ) Love the positive energy!
A7) I'd like to think their future selves are worthy of hiring, and currently have so many dependable ones come to mind
Q7 We have student tech team where kids must fill out an application and submit a digital artifact to participate so I guess I do
Oh no, I was speaking from my perspective. Having STARS is a good tool for all.
A7: I would hope every educator would say yes. If not, maybe it's not the students.
A7: when I'm finished training them. :) Maybe bc I tch Sp.Ed., but we "look ahead" as best we can. My kiddos have a lot to offer!
A6. I reflect everyday on my growth as an educator /TIS before. I build reflection questions for myself into my lesson plans
A7: If the students of my first years made it through my lack of preparation & wavering expectations they can do anything!
A7: Kind of a tough question, looking back at my high school self...I wouldn't hire me haha
You guys need to join forces with & spread some makerspace love at nxt summer.
A7: I've hired one of my former students before as well. He's quite the guitarist now. I hope I played some small part in that.
A7: I hope our students become our future teachers. We need teachers with their enthusiasm and willingness to take risks!
A7: I would hire any of my past Ss! Get to know them. Showcase personal strengths!
the right commute is not a bad deal. It helps separate work from home
SAME! I would drastically reform my own HS experience if I could.
A7. I have hired my own students!!!! I can't expect them to learn with me if there isn't trust between us
A6: went through an extensive formative instructional practice process (FIP) through great experience
I feel the saaame way! to those guys :)
I've seen the Q: if you were a S in your class, would you want to be there? Great reflection!
😂 I agree. Wish I could go back!
I'd hire Ss from your tech team. Hmmm...student led PD for Ts??
I know what you mean! I want to apologize to my babies from my first few years!
A7) there are Friday evenings I come home in awe of the amount of work they put in that week, so they'll be great in the world
I do feel like the majority of Ss are being trained to be a teacher, write this, do that, read this...let them create!
I burnt my chicken tweeting in
Has to have bathroom on route, tho. 45 min rural & too much coffee, argg!
G Voice still seems to be an option. Rumors of its demise are from 2014.
but would you hire you now? Would school have changed that! Or old age :-)
