The greatest resource in any school building are the teachers, making hiring an important decision for school leaders. Some attributes of a quality teaching candidate include a passion for kids, a commitment to lifelong learning, and high character. #edchat#EDL709
When it comes to interviewing applicants these three top my list and are in order of importance:
1. Purpose
2. Relationships
3. Knowledge and Skill
An educator’s purpose is and will always be THE key factor and most valuable resource.

I like to hear about their experiences and what they learned from them. If there is a long list of experience, why is that? If not, why? This may help determine how motivated they are, if they have grit, and possibly if they can complete projects. #edchat
1. Focussed on learning more than teaching. 2. Collaborative practices must sit at the core of their practice 3. Alignment with core values of the school 4. Reflective practitioner #edchat
Adaptability is important as school continue to change and grow with things like technology. A teacher must show that they can adapt to those changes #edchat
#edchat I'm Olivia, A senior Special Ed major at Cedarville University. From my interview experience, I have found that interviewers look for a plan to celebrate diversity within the classroom and specifics on how we plan to do it.
When thinking about what to look for in an interview or on an application, one important thing comes to mind- Passion. I think that passion for teaching is a very valuable resource to have in a teacher and it is something that can’t be taught. #edchat#EDL709
...the obvious factor for an interview committee to look for in a candidate -> CAN SHE TEACH WELL? What evidence can she provided to support her claim of being a good teacher? #edchat
When interviewing teacher candidates it is important to see first that they have the skills to best teach the students and also that they care deeply about the students' education. All students deserve teachers who want them to succeed. #edchat
Kate from Florida. Key factors are inquisitive thinkers, innovativelears, dedicated educators. Show some out of the box thinking, having big dreams and goals, being willing to try new things even I’d it means one may fail. Practice what they preach #edchat
“Parents don’t need someone to give them the answers; they just need someone who can assist in processing everything they want to do for their children and seeing how much is possible.” —@mslaurenfinehttps://t.co/MeuyXXkpex#edreimagined#suptchat
Evidence SHOULD be personal notes from former students/parents, examples of going above and beyond to get students to learn, not simple data and passing rates #edchat
Key factors for an interview committee to consider should include... a) evidence of being a high quality teacher, b) pedagogical and subject matter expertise, 3) interpersonal skills, 4) advocate for all children... WHAT ELSE? #edchat
Something I look for in an interviewee: buzzwords. The more buzzwords they drop, the less likely I am to believe they are a person of substance. #edchat
Aubrey from 🇨🇦jumping in a bit late. Love finding humble teacher candidates that seek collaboration and ask about coaching/induction. In other words, those who really show they want to grow into the profession. #edchat
Interviews committees should look for teachers who are student-centered, empathetic, and believe in all kids potential. Equally as important, committees should look for reflective educators who value and demonstrate learning from failure #edchat
I love this idea. I want new people to come in state what is obvious to them.
Hire someone because you want the school to be more like them, not so you can make them into what you already have. #edchat
How many new teacher hiring committees research candidates on social media to find answers to questions that they can't openly ask in the interview? #Edchat
I sometimes wonder what data an interview actually gathers, given the constraints . But a necessary skill for a good teacher is a collaborative & responsive approach With Ss and colleagues #edchat
A2 2 yrs ago when I applied for my current job, at each interview I was asked a question about something I had posted on social media. Each time it was a question about a different post. #edchat
They read my personal postings from both Twitter and Facebook (not classroom accounts). They asked me to elaborate on the point I was making in particular posts and provide examples of how that pedagogy looked in with my classes #edchat
An applicant that knows what it means to be “data-driven” and understands the importance of using data to assess is important in the hiring process. #edchat#EDFB4338

Educator interviews should include information on how they deal with multiple resources. Curriculum, Grants, local charities. Finding resources to help their students. #EDL709#edchat

I’ve always been asked to teach a lesson. However I don’t think it always gives a true picture of one’s ability...it’s not your room, you don’t know the kids, it’s a bit skewed just are interview questions #edchat
#edchat A1 1) knowledge of content and how to teach that content in exciting and engaging ways 2) positive contribution to school community 3) dependability 4) a rockin’ teaching philosophy that is demonstrated in your work 5) examples of student work
I was asked about the risks and benefits of connecting on social media students with authors whose texts they were reading; also how I thought digcit could be embedded in high school curricula and avoid add-on lessons. Each Q was prefaced by quoting my social media post. #edchat

For me I think there is something(s) that the interviewers see in the candidate that warrants an opportunity and @ the end of the day when given an opportunity with support, a candidate can become the star teacher you envisioned. Opportunity+support=dynamo educators #edchat
Me, too! My professional goal this year is to help my not-yet-connected colleagues find ways to connect that will enhance their pedagogy and expand their students perspectives. #edchat
I like to understand their educational philosophy, if they play nicely with others, how they think, what a typical class looks like and the last thing they have read #edchat
I participated in a two-step interview once. Candidates first did a traditional interview then came back and presented a lesson using tech resources. #edchat

I don't know.....I work with a lot of discouraged Ts right now. Trying to help them get connected can be seen as "one more thing I'm doing wrong." :/ #Edchat
Totally in on that! Really like the "last thing they have read!" I have interviewed a few thousand and wish I had a time machine to get that one in!! #edchat
#Maths teachers - have you signed up for Simon Singh’s weekly maths puzzle sheets for keen students in Years 7-9?

We've all experienced PD that falls flat or worse, wastes precious time. Today I presenter a tech-based activity USING the tech. Letting Ts have voice and choice in conference day is ideal! #pd#edchat#edtech#Read2Lead

Depending on the age and content area of the teacher, there should be a level of knowledge and a growth mindset. Do they know their blind spots? #edchat
RIght with ya, Kate. Too many variables beyond your control. The pressure for someone who already has a full head is pretty immense - aside from very few personality types, getting a good picture of anything beyond resilience pretty tough.#edchat
Teaching a lesson in someone else’s class doesn’t show the classroom management strategies that you implement in your own room and how you interact with your own students. #edchat#EDFB4338

I think passion and a love for Ss comes through in an interview. If a T coming in to interview has those two things, I would agree that the candidate warrants an opportunity. #Edchat

To add on to this: I'd like to know the last thing they read, what they are currently reading, and what they want to read next. Some at my school have started posting this outside their doors. It's been interesting to see. #Edchat
Good point! I am trying to position it as a way to be supported rather than judged. Find your people who prop you up! In high school teachers are experts in different content... find your experts who can be your partners, allies, & resources! #edchat
Let candidate choose a standard or lesson and ask them to redesign and hack it to include authentic digital literacy or citizenship practice and explain their pedagogy #edchat

I don't think it's so much if they were recreational (my currents on my poster: Harbor Me-YA by JacquelineWoodson, Lies My Teacher Told Me, and Dear Martin-more YA) as that they are reading and what kinds of books they read. If it's all Harlequin Romance, I'd wonder...#Edchat
MODELING INTEGERS WITH ALGEBRA TILES. In this module model students will learn how to use algebra tiles to model positive numbers, negative numbers, and zero. For this module make sure students have access to a set of algebra tiles. #EdChathttps://t.co/QyKIlsBxu1
How about asking a candidate: if you could use and spend all of your PD time in any way you could and serve it at times that work for you, what would you? what would you learn? why? #edchat

Being an educator is a noble profession. It doesn’t pay much but the purpose to dedicate and commit yourself to educating the students is worth all the challenges.
#edchat#EDL709
A demonstration would give an idea of how an individual teaches, but it would be hard for that to be authentic and show how they are in their own classroom. It would definitely be a good thing to see, but a committee couldn’t judge abilities solely on that. #edchat#EDFB4338

Interview committees asking questions ... I find this almost laughable because it assumes these committees actually have a legitimate choice. Our district started the year with hundreds of open positions ... #edchat
Interesting read! How the Myth of ‘13th Grade’ Derails Students. We talk about #highereducation like it’s 13th grade, and it’s just not. Students could and should be thinking about that transition in a completely different frame #plaea#edchathttps://t.co/XMl1QECdhW
Teachers are some of the best resources in a school; therefore, top qualities for a great hire should be integrity and emulator of it, growth mindset, and knowledge and skill. #EDL709#edl709
okay Shawn... a mostly moot point since doesn't appear that the system cares whether teachers are digitally connected and for that matter whether they effectively use technology to enhance learning and teaching #edchat@donald_gately

You can choose to not be connected but how do you answer the following questions:
Who do you connect with to learn?
Where do you get new ideas?
How do you turn to when you need advice and support? #edchat
"Children better understand similarities and respect differences among people when exposed to culturally responsive practice." #quotes#diversity#edchat
I'm a teacher ... if I am asking questions I want to know how a teacher would describe a quality teacher-student relationship ... then contemplate how much is meaningful vs superficial #edchat
I completely agree with you. There are some things that are difficult to see in just one lesson. Classroom community, ability to collaborate with others, etc. #edchat#EDL709
...well, hate to say it but what we consider relevant is largely irrelevant. What matters is what state, district, and school-level leaders consider relevant as integral components of teaching and personal learning. #edchat

Be intentional with them. Find one on one moments to get to know them better. Provide a way for them to shine in their own way. Practice sharing ideas ‘loud and proud’ but also allow them to work in small groups and share through video, drawing, writing etc #edchat

A big problem with ruling out a candidate based on a lack of digital connections, especially with new teachers, is that a lot of them aren’t aware of the digital connection opportunities. As long as they are open to it, I think that makes them a good candidate. #edchat#EDFB4338

You can learn content (trust me, I know of which I speak). You can't "learn" to have passion and love for kids--ALL KIDS, not just the ones who look like you. #Edchat
Overworking new teachers by adding more stress is a key factor in the great loss of new teachers in their first three years, We need to rethink stuff. #Edchat
I think that is because there are always circumstances affecting any particular T, school, district. Since we cannot standardize the profession (even though politicians keep trying), there will always be variety. I don't think that is necessarily a bad thing. #Edchat
In reply to
@ShiftParadigm, @donald_gately, @tomwhitby, @mssackstein
I also think that interviewers should look for “what the applicant could offer” that would help the school serve the student population better such as second language, ability to connect to the families and communities, or knowledge in arts, music, etc.
#edchat#EDL709
