A1: respect, wonder/questioning (critical thinking + wondering why/how/when), collaboration, love of learning
-
Hi Joanna! Welcome! Glad that you can join us tonight!

A1 Most important is that Maslow comes before Blooms. S, T, and P must feel safe and valued to build community,
-
A1: Empathy, kindness, and an appreciation for differences.
-
A1: My 4 major values in my class would be mindfulness, inquiry, creativity, and voice... I think. Hard to narrow down!
-
starting with the big Q's! Excellent! A1. mutual respect, persistence, joy / wonder / fun
-
A1: relationships, empathy, curiosity.
-
A1 Trust, Respect, Cooperation, Empathy, Honesty which lead to a positive class & school culture. https://t.co/Q0N2MNkOiq

Q1: If you had to pick 3-4 core values you’d like your class/school/edu-work community to encompass, what would they be?
-
-
I agree I had to fudge with some slashes. Yours are all good.
-
In my office we always talk about honesty, respect, safety and responsibilities. Good starting points to get specific
-
A1: Core values I desire in my community: empathy, inquisitiveness, resilience, courage
-
-
-
OH yes, left out creativity and growth mindset.
-
A1 acceptance, perseverance, curiosity, empathy
-
I am wondering if respect yields safety?
-
A1 relationship safety inquiry voice and a huge sense of wonder
-
-
A1. thanks for the reminders! Yes, epathy / kindness for safety and creativity!
-
You write some of these questions and go hmm, even when you know they're coming! lol!
-
Yes ... This first question was a doozy
-
I'm Tammy from New West, popping in and out but wanted to be back for 1st edchat of school year :-) thx mods.
-
Yes growth mindset & curiosity & perseverance
-
Lots of A1s talking about empathy. What are the most effective ways ppl are helping increase that in Ss?
-
So did I but want them in
-
A1 Connection, empowered, trust, valued
-
A1: empathy, honesty, curiosity, & fun
-
Hi Tammy! Welcome back to !

Hi Olwen! Can't forget fun!
-
Mindfulness can encompass growth mindset and empathy IMO, which is why I chose that one :D
-
A1, willingness to try/eat something new, sharing, compassion
-
A1- respect, empathy, curiosity, kindness - feel that kindness is embedded in first two?
-
Hi Tammy - no worries! Glad to have you, even for awhile :)
-
Hehe, sorry :D Gotta set the tone - your community should be built on a vision, right?
-
connections are so important. It seems everything else can be built on that.
-
Often give assi. where S have to learn from each other, not just from me. Forces S to interact https://t.co/Fem5pGb2oh
-
-
Lots of A1s talking about empathy. What are the most effective ways ppl are helping increase that in Ss?
-
Blogging with Ss around the world. Getting Ss involved in Service Day.
-
role play, drama, and sharing of stories can help.
-
depends on the schema - gotta be flexible in where to start based on students experiences start wide, get specific
-
-
Evening Meredith joining from SW FL where Mother Nature is putting on one heck of a show with lightning as a storm moves through.
-
Picturing us in teams of 3 on vertical spaces, narrowing our choices, choosing the bigger ideas to encompass more, showing others
-
--> Q2: What are your goals when shaping your direct edu-community at the beginning of this year? Where would you like to end up?
-
Yes. Take risks & being ok to fail
-
Hello Meredith! Thanks for joining us tonight!
-
Welcome Meredith! Great to have you here
-
Talking about diversity, valuing different strengths, modeling empathy, reminding them of their own needs encourages empathy
-
-
A1: I like to involve a lot of other people & classes w/ my own. Hoping to connect w/ some other cultures https://t.co/35n0gTCEgB
-
-
Lots of A1s talking about empathy. What are the most effective ways ppl are helping increase that in Ss?
-
stay safe Meredith. Hard to believe as I sit here tweeting on a beautiful evening.
-
A2 determining where students are at, determining strengths and areas of focus of staff, examining present resources and needs
-
A1: Relationships, safety & belonging, welcoming difference of opinions (esp ones that challenge/disrupt our thinking)
-
core values. Best effort always, dare to be different, self reflection
-
Ensure students have opportunities to get to know one another.
-
Hey , Karen, parent from Abbotsford. Looking fwd to reading your tweets about community tonight <3 So important!
-
-
For me values are important, but what I hear everyone saying=we want a child-centered, heart and mind balanced approach, right?
-
A2 S knowing that if they fail, another S is there to pick them up. Fail is temporary and will be overcome.
-
A2 Sharing ideas. Learning from gr8 educators. Blogging my edu exp 365blog daily. Increase my Twitter PLN. https://t.co/BrV6ljLfi2
-
-
--> Q2: What are your goals when shaping your direct edu-community at the beginning of this year? Where would you like to end up?
-
Hey Karen, great to see you again!
-
Hello Keith! Welcome! Self-reflection is critical. How does this look in your context?
-
. I share that I never ate apricots bc I thought I wouldn't like them. Sad I went years w/o eating them
-
Yes, when there is an environment in which each child's unique self is valued then being different is a good thing.
-
Hello Karen! Great that you can join! Looking forward to hearing your thoughts!
-
-
-
Goal to have place & space where all members (staff, students, families) feel honoured, connected, & respected.
-
A2- beg of year is when I most miss being an enrolling T. goals to welcome EVERYONE to new year with heaps of enthusiasm esp fams
-
thanks Craig! A little late tonight, but I'm here :)
-
Great to see folks talking about community from a classroom, school, district, and PLN vantage point - we are a part of many!
-
For staff, where could this space exist?
-
A2 allow Ss to take responsibility for their own learning, work to solve problems, discover their voices can make a difference
-
A2 My class- empower Ss to take risks, fail, redesign- choice to demo mastery-let Ss have a voice in their learning stu-cen class
-
A1: safety and creativity are my top 2
-
Yes! Are you ready for Tuesay?
-
A2: Start problem-solving & discovery-based learning immediately with some other team building to embed core concepts naturally
-
Yes! This. Always. https://t.co/ljnj80vxta
-
-
Goal to have place & space where all members (staff, students, families) feel honoured, connected, & respected.
-
A2: Building connections with each other & the greater sense of humanity (culture & history), courage to risk, strong efforts
-
Sharing w/ Ss makes such an impact. I share I'm Dyslexic & was Bullied so they know I am on their side no matter what
-
this one has me curious as a parent. I want to bring my knowledge fwd but not be seen as "difficult"
-
well, we do have an empty office that I am referring to the "collab cave" - moving resources in this weekish
-
Seeing a theme of "connectivity" to responses to A2!
-
A1. I'm in new district this year. I wrote about this on the school website to introduce myself: https://t.co/kIexln0tiA

-
A2 I like starting by truingbtibestavkidh norms around trust (honest vulnerable & risk taking)
-
-
So true. Problem-Solving is so important for Ss to take hold of so find their lrng style
-
Authenticity is overlooked but so key! https://t.co/13wdoGqbfZ
-
-
A2 My class- empower Ss to take risks, fail, redesign- choice to demo mastery-let Ss have a voice in their learning stu-cen class
-
-
Q3 is on its way. Watch for it from !
-
>>>Q3: How do students play a role in shaping your edu-environment?
-
-
A1 respect trust curiosity connection
-
Thank you! "Authenticity" addresses what I was trying to say too!
-
A3 Ss have flexible seating. Ss write the community goals & take ownership of them & self direct & monitor https://t.co/1ZYgb192mO
-
-
>>>Q3: How do students play a role in shaping your edu-environment?
-
A3 S's needs dictate pace and resources. often rewrite lesson on fly as S needs become evident.
-
A3: the little humans are (or should be) at the heart of everything we do in creation of optimal learning communities
-
A3: Student voice shapes class environment through rule-making in class meetings & working through social problems collaboratively
-
A2. My district is working hard in the area of deeper learning. I'll work hard to focus on this. https://t.co/s8c4rovz8d
-
A3 luckily as principal-librarian I get to form conversations during weekly group get togethers! Their voice HAS to be included
-
A2 New role this year...really want to share & collaborate with others. Such great resources out there if we ask!
-
-
Great advice from a seasoned P as we embark on a new school year https://t.co/VW0DsW3H7F
-
-
A2 determining where students are at, determining strengths and areas of focus of staff, examining present resources and needs
-
A2. My district is working hard in the area of deeper learning. I'll work hard to focus on this. https://t.co/A5F2JBoXo5
-
A3. really want to work on inquiry and diverse learning options for students this year
-
A3.We have the opportunity to be sure every day is a good day. Learners filled w/ joy shape opportunities. https://t.co/3MZeFbyV7f
-
A3 Ss must be a part of setting norms and climate-ask what do we need to have happen so that we can all do our best?
-
A3/2 I let them choose seat & create rules of behavior. They also have a makerspace to have options of demo of mastery
-
We hope you’re enjoying the chat tonight! Remember, we chat every Sunday at 7 pm PST!
-
Love this mindset, Brett! https://t.co/IEwkVOIMyJ
-
-
A3 S's needs dictate pace and resources. often rewrite lesson on fly as S needs become evident.
-
I think about re-framing&coming from perspective of good intentions. being curious not defensive?
-
As long as we're coming from an ethic of care and respect, Ss, Ts & Ps can make great progress.
-
A3 students have to be at the forefront of everything we do- their skills, behaviour, worries, strengths… 1/2
-
A3: By living the core values, working with one another, questioning, verifying, celebrating, extending, connecting ideas etc.
-
How will they shape those environments? Are you providing them with choice in topics or ways to show learning?
-
What role have you moved into! How can the tweeps support you?
-
and when I say that, I mean everyone, not just T, not just P ;)
-
A3 2/2 once we have determined areas of need and strength we then look at how to best utilize the strengths of staff to meet needs
-
A3 take collective class "mood". Are they extroverted? Introverted? Active? How do they want to learn?
-
Ultimately when strong trustful relationships are forged between Ss & Ts student voices are heard.
-
Lots of work on establishing group norms among Ss
-
-
A mix is likely inevitable. How do we meet the needs of all students when they have differing needs?
-
-
Ss should be centre of our practice.
-
some choice in topic; definitely in showing. Co-teaching for the 1st time & want to take advantage of 2 brains!
-
LOVE this! So true! We must believe we all have good intentions. https://t.co/aygdbMfjAn
-
-
As long as we're coming from an ethic of care and respect, Ss, Ts & Ps can make great progress.
-
Q3 I think we should be discussing how best to enable students to create their learning environment
-
YES! Working on class reviews this year as a planning tool!
-
-
-
Part of my assignment is PD coordinator for my district. Excited to explore and support others.
-
A3 Ss help write class charter, collab to name student house teams for year
-
Totally - open inquiry is important, but not necessary all the time. Ss should be exposed to what they don't know
-
Hope you can join us every week to learn/share together!
-
Q4: How do colleagues play a role in shaping your edu-environment?
-
A3- flexible seating, class agreement made by students, walls have very little at beg of year. Waiting for students' work
-
-
Q3 can't just give kids a blank slate. Many have no idea where to start. Too use to being fed information
-
In constant collab mode, my colleagues are REALLY smart! SO I unabashedly steal from them, just as I do from YOU!
-
Blank walls are fantastic, gotta get them creating immediately to make the space theirs!
-
-
-
A4: colleagues provide support, laughs, collaboration. I adore my new colleagues already. Excited about the year ahead.
-
A4. I will be relying on them daily being new to the school and community. Excited to learn more.
-
A4 Positive Ts set the tone for the school. I try to collab w/ many Ts I admire the gr8 learning opp's https://t.co/fdyrSgNqbV
-
-
Q4: How do colleagues play a role in shaping your edu-environment?
-
Gotta be taught to learn and not "play" school! https://t.co/I5VUt8UB2n
-
-
Q3 can't just give kids a blank slate. Many have no idea where to start. Too use to being fed information
-
A3. I've encouraged a few teachers to set up less. Put less on the walls. Let the kids do it.
-
A4 Middle school is great for this! Working on a new team this year, learning new ideas, generating energy together.
-
WHOA! You STEAL from us?! ;)
!
-
. I prefer to call it " inspired by"
-
That support is critical! Trickles down to the work with Ss!

-
Yay! Glad you're feeling positive where you are, Olwen!
-
A4- as admin if I am trying to do it solo I am going to be treading water for long time, need collaborative effort to go anywhere
-
sometimes that's the best reason to give the blank slate- to see "what they do when they don't know what to do!"
-
A4 surround yourself with positive thinking colleagues who lift you to new places. Don't let negative thinkers let you stagnate
-
Visit other classrooms and give positive FB & welcome others in my room. Support new ideas & taking risks.
-
So much opportunity for professional learning if colleagues are willing to share!
-
It's outright theft! :) Dont stand in my way of an idea if it can help my S's!
-
A4 cont- I need to know my staff, where to guide, support, push and when to get out of way
-
A4. Working together during PLC on commonly selected SMART goals that are the focus on conversations. https://t.co/0H9GaoVuwJ
-
Classrooms visits are important! Seeing others in action is so helpful!
-
Totally - and products all look different! I cringe when I see Ts outlining or touching up S artwork
-
A4. Have a new teaching partner this year. We've been text collabing since she got the job
-
What an amazing way to proactively build your team! YOU ROCK! https://t.co/pjHzz9W1qr
-
-
A4. Have a new teaching partner this year. We've been text collabing since she got the job
-
A4. changed schools this year and I am SO EXCITED to learn from & with my new team! indeed!
-
Instructional rounds programs sound like they'd be hugely impactful -need Ts to be open & unafraid of it! https://t.co/G4Ti5tkQIV
-
-
Visit other classrooms and give positive FB & welcome others in my room. Support new ideas & taking risks.
-
This sounds like a power imbalance. I want staff to work with me.
-
Amen. Stay clear of the teacher workroom gossip. Align w/pos teachers. Share in the positive school culture
-
A4 I try hard to establish norms to be comfortable to take risks...and that we are all on learning journeys....
-
Tonight’s topic was suggested by YOU, ! Please stop by our website to suggest topics for upcoming chats: https://t.co/apNWRbqItJ
-
Found great success when Rounds focus on what the Ss are doing rather than the teacher
-
A4 I struggle with this one. Try to be w Ts and support staff who energize me - the pos ones who love and respect "our" kiddos
-
There is something refreshing with change. Not always scary, but can be invigorating!
-
A4: Colleagues help shape larger scale programs like Daily 5 and Guided Math - forever grateful to for her help!
-
. I love watching my colleagues teach. I learn so much, regardless of the subject area
-
A4: Hi all, John from Manitoba. Having supportive colleagues makes a huge positive difference in the school community.
-
Wish there was more time for that.
-
Absolutely, helps take the edge off of the professional nerves :)
-
Welcome John! Thanks for sharing!
-
A4: Our Pr. says, 'our classrooms should have thin walls' - so that we can share, model, learn, collab w/colleagues.
-
. thanks! I know we'll learn from each other
-
-
-
--> Q5 coming from any moment now
-
A4. the other part of my job will involve going into other T's classes; want to make them comfortable & know I support them
-
>>Q5: What are some strategies you use to build community in your edu-environment?
-
when trust & respect are the foundation Ts & Ss are more willing to ask for help.
-
wow. Missed that one: starting with establishing norms...oops
-
Even little strategies you pick up can make a big difference! https://t.co/3NqBougT7P
-
-
. I love watching my colleagues teach. I learn so much, regardless of the subject area
-
disagree- collab must be at forefront absolutely as 1st part a4 indicated, also allows trust for 2nd part need both parts
-
Establishing relationships is critical in your role! You'll rock!
-
-
Do you have any of them you could share with us? Links? Explanations? Etc
-
A5: Trying to be there for colleagues. As well, deal with problems face to face not behind someone's back. Be up front.
-
We try to have Ss work with a variety of Ts throughout the year in order to make connections. We take Ss interest then match them
-
I'm on sofa with pup doing in kitchen listening to the Hip, making pickles
-
Outside of school hang outs, a bowling night for Ts, on PLC days lunch away so team can relax & bond https://t.co/niPEp9Ez45
-
-
>>Q5: What are some strategies you use to build community in your edu-environment?
-
A5. Be visible, present, responsive and accessible. Cheer on and get to know the people I get to work with now.
-
A5 Play together first. Share stories, get comfortable, and find our voices.
-
A5: I purposefully create social problems (unfair protocols/rules etc) that Ss can choose to fix democratically thru Class Meeting
-
We are on same page. If I am nudging staff, guiding, then I see my self as 'teacher/expert' not co-learner
-
A5. open communication and, again, mutual respect! find commonalities and start with those!
-
-
A5 Team building occurs when honesty & respect are honored. We talk & share ideas & always support risk taking & listen
-
A5: Being a good listener just like we should be with our students. Take time when a colleague wants to vent.
-
This is important for new learning strategies, intro to tech, or new manipulatives. Play gets us acquanted!
-
A5 Food brings people together!
-
-
unless of course your kids are coming deinstitutionalization already, but most still need to be reprogrammed.
-
AGREED!! I am firm believer in the power of snacks! Baking tomorrow to take into my team! https://t.co/RcXaPh3o8o
-
-
A5 Food brings people together!
-
A5: having an open door policy (especially on days when I want to close it), talking, talking, and more talking.
-
We are not always on the same page but common vision & goals leads us down same path. Ss are focus always.
-
some advice given to me recently. 'Pull them in. Listen, respect, and move forward together'.
-
Don’t forget to use the hashtag throughout the week to keep the conversation going!
-
I love this idea! Can you share an example of your unfair rules? Great way to empower student voice!
-
I don't think we ever need to be on the same page, just have to be in the same book.
-
A5: Community building strategies: Community circles, engaging real life problems to work through, facilitating cross feedbacking
-
A1. Community, curiosity, and ambition (i.e. always looking for ways to improve)
-
this works for parents who may be challenging too
-
I.e. Class leader can choose who gets to be leader on the next day. Totally unfair. Kids fix quickly in meeting!
-
-
-
By not listening to rumours nor jumping in to criticize a colleague in public . Speak directly with colleague.
-
Yet to go over S "rules". Did cover academic expectations. Told them after 7 yrs of S exp, they know how to behave in class.
-
--> Q6: How do you manage a community member who is struggling to meet the core values or goals of the overall community?
-
Changing admin office to collaborative/engaging from authoritative/dictator. Can change school culture. https://t.co/GUBvOdXqcT
-
-
-
A6 LOTS of 1:1 time to build trust and redirect.
-
For sure. We all need to realize that we are human and will make mistakes so don't judge.
-
A6. Struggled w/ this question until I read and listened to Ron Clark speak. Focus on the runners. https://t.co/A58Nvg8SnF
-
Could this be a topic for a#bcedchat? and I chatting why it takes a week to put kids in classes in Sept.
-
A6 in my class, b/c Ss wrote our community goals they self direct & monitor very well as a group. I model. https://t.co/Dey4wfLqLR
-
-
--> Q6: How do you manage a community member who is struggling to meet the core values or goals of the overall community?
-
Every year, a major source of my back to school angst... possible topic? https://t.co/24So2xyCi9
-
-
Could this be a topic for a#bcedchat? and I chatting why it takes a week to put kids in classes in Sept.
-
-
For sure. I have seen too many instances of this rumour mongering which can destroy a community.
-
A6 Mentorship is a part of this.
-
could you add in something about transitioning kids who require extra support?
-
A6 Ross Greene's collaborative problem solving model
-
A6. come alongside, try to see from their perspective, try to identify why they are struggling, reserve judgement
-
-
https://t.co/67zZZaN7xP
-
-
A student who might be acting out & not following the class goals, I sit down with & ask questions to help identify cause.
-
Ugh, no kidding. This is hardest on our at-risk learners and students with anxiety. :(
-
Rooted in enrolment and staffing. Wondering if districts do this differently.
-
A6 Avoid managing. Listen to them, try to understand their journey. Continue to invite them/welcome them.
-
Often, source of struggle is not what we think! https://t.co/04rk0iKiWG
-
-
A6. come alongside, try to see from their perspective, try to identify why they are struggling, reserve judgement
-
1) When was edcamp vancouver? 2) Would have loved to been a part of that convo
-
and their teachers too! you guys don't get the info until what, day of?
-
A6. Give them a chance. Let them 'get on board' on their terms. A good line I just heard. 'This is voluntarily but inevitable'.
-
Often, we'll do previewing of possible placement before summer.
-
We have NO idea until grids finalized at board offices and trickle down to schools :( ...
-
-
-
Greene's work is very good! Highly recommend!
-
And sometimes the kids who were in class you have first week end up being in class you actually have...
-
A6: We have to be there to support that struggling T but we also need to be direct with that T and try to point them to help
-
Agreed. Positive reinforcement. Listening to Ss building trust & then behavior will be more in line.

-
And then you repeat lessons? Or plan something different/one offs for that time. So frustrating.
-
A6: this is when you practice your own empathic skills. "How can I help you?" Try to be in their shoes - S, T, or P.
-
A6 can a school run on 1 set of core values? can we expect all teachrs, studs, parnts & admin 2 have same values?
-
A6: Kids who are struggling can often be reinforced by particular peers - empathetic questioning and understanding.
-

One of my ss always reminded us to believe in yourself and therefore others
