  • brianrozinsky Sep 24 @ 9:04 AM EDT
Hiya, #sunchat. I'm Brian. I teach MS Ss Eng in CO. I can take or leave homework, but I'm all for practice in myriad/flexible forms.
  • MissWinegar Sep 24 @ 9:04 AM EDT
In my classroom, our homework is usually just work not finished during class time #sunchat

  • MissWinegar Sep 24 @ 9:05 AM EDT
With how busy our Ss are, I don't personally see the value in assigning a bunch of homework. Family life is valuable too #sunchat
  • mrclinefhs Sep 24 @ 9:06 AM EDT
That is where I've gone, maybe not in AP classes. But work done in class is usually done, and I can help! #sunchat

Today we are talking homework. Prompts are below, can't wait to hear your thoughts! #sunchat
  • mrclinefhs Sep 24 @ 9:08 AM EDT
Hah we were there with our son a few years ago! I really think my approach to hw changed when my own kid was in school. #sunchat
    In reply to @msommerville
  • msommerville Sep 24 @ 9:09 AM EDT
#sunchat ... and for the most part, KNG parents who want homework typically believe all of it must be paper, "like older" siblings.
  • susankotch Sep 24 @ 9:09 AM EDT
#sunchat Foundation skills have been taught at lower levels, so complex assignments taking multiple days just have end dates to meet.
    • MissWinegar Sep 24 @ 9:04 AM EDT
In my classroom, our homework is usually just work not finished during class time #sunchat
  • brianrozinsky Sep 24 @ 9:09 AM EDT
Amy, you're making me re-consider my blanket practice stance in Eng classes: Read at least 20 minutes per day. #sunchat

#sunchat I prefer to send home weekly prompts, but add the word "homework" to appeal to parents. Here's what it looks like:
  • susankotch Sep 24 @ 9:11 AM EDT
Amy, I would think kids with a passion for music wouldn't think of it as HW, but loving what they do. #sunchat

HW = student reflection on their current place, make goals, choose path to achivement show eveidence. Each is different and valid. #sunchat
  • AmyLynnRever Sep 24 @ 9:12 AM EDT
Agreed. But many need to gain skill before they become passionate about it (more fun when you can play!). Need to find balance. #sunchat

  • kshelton112 Sep 24 @ 9:12 AM EDT
Q1. I do believe that homework is valuable, but the amount that we sometimes give out/receive can be less valuable! #sunchat
  • msommerville Sep 24 @ 9:12 AM EDT
#sunchat @JeremyDBond P's ask if KNG will have homework, 1/2 are relieved w/"no", other 1/2 express concern S needs to dev. homework habit.

#sunchat We have students who are homeless, parents work night shifts. My 2nd graders need time to socialize, play, family time. HW- read.

#sunchat For me, a simple 'skittle' for bringing it in, not punitive. Ss don't get upset. Save logs 4 conferences to encourage P involvement

I often see hw being referred to as work sheets. Worksheets = busywork & I don't think they're valuable. #sunchat
  • mssackstein - Moderator Sep 24 @ 9:21 AM EDT
HW is only as useful as the learning itself. It shouldn't be done in K-6 and there needs to be flexibility in secondary #sunchat
  • mrclinefhs Sep 24 @ 9:21 AM EDT

IMO, it's a way for teachers to fill a grade book, which is terrible. Plus it's the way it has always been done. Not a good reason #sunchat
