Welcome to #HCPSTeach and our version of "The Voice" ... where all voices are welcome -- home / charter / public / private school teachers! Let's start with Introductions!
Hi! I'm part of the #HCPSTeach team ... I'll be your moderator tonight ... Welcome (&take a moment to invite your friends) ... Sylvia, Academic Coach / ENG Tchr at Title 1 HS, Tampa, FL ... Adam Levine - musical resume! How about it? @jessxbo@MrLeonard8@YodaPond@dene_gainey
Nora Choquette, Literacy Coach, Horizon Academy. Never watched The Voice, but I am hoping @Carmella_Samler joins us tonight for her first chat! #HCPSTeach
Q1 ... “The Voice” offers “Open Call Auditions” across the nation. How do we invite students to speak/participate in our classrooms (engagement)? #HCPSTeach
A1 ... While presentations may be nice, they are very time-consuming. New tech like @Flipgrid and @Edsby video feeds allow our students to record their presentations, responses, etc. and post them to the teacher. #HCPSTeach
A1: first, you must create a culture of trust & respect between and among students & teacher. Then students must be given an opportunity to think through their thoughts, share ideas, and participate in academic discussions. #HCPSTeach
Q1 ... “The Voice” offers “Open Call Auditions” across the nation. How do we invite students to speak/participate in our classrooms (engagement)? #HCPSTeach
A1 I think this starts on day 1 by creating a comfortable environment... Ss need to feel safe to share, but also valued. Ss lead majority of the conversations... whole group, Turn and talk, partners. They have the floor and know they can share. #HCPSTeach
Carmella Samler, Dunnellon Middle and Belleview Middle Literacy Coach. This is my first twitter chat. I’m a fan of Gwen Stefani because she rocks! Thanks @CASchoquette for the invite. 😀 #HCPSTeach
A1) You create a classroom culture in which s’s feel loved and safe. They can’t be afraid to take risks, bc that is the only way that real learning can occur. We lead our students by example and we set the tone for our classroom environment. #HCPSTeach
Q1 ... “The Voice” offers “Open Call Auditions” across the nation. How do we invite students to speak/participate in our classrooms (engagement)? #HCPSTeach
Q2 ... “The Voice” begins their televised season with “Blind Auditions.” As a teacher, how do we “blind” ourselves so that EVERY student’s voice is heard (equity)? #HCPSTeach
A1 example #HCPSTeach Our #geniusHour project allows them to choose their passion and explore how math is intertwined. And yep....totally slid in! Caught!
A1: We invite students to speak/participate in our classroom by creating an environment where they are comfortable expressing themselves. They must know that the teacher cares and feel safe to make mistakes. Structuring the conversations is important too. #HCPSTeach
I try to balance random selection & open forum. Students need to be pushed to answer questions & must also be encouraged to engage in discussions. Using language like “thank you for your input. Other thoughts?” Instead of “that’s right” keeps the discussion more open. #HCPSTeach
Q2 ... “The Voice” begins their televised season with “Blind Auditions.” As a teacher, how do we “blind” ourselves so that EVERY student’s voice is heard (equity)? #HCPSTeach
A2: Love posting on @Flipgrid and @Seesaw where the students respond to each other's work/thoughts. Everyone gets to share, respond, and see how others responded to them! They love it and have learned to except constructive criticism. #hcpsteach
A2 Meet them where they are - Long gone are the days where one lesson fits all. Blended learning has made a great impact in student confidence this semester. I stopped it for a week and my Ss asked for it back #hcpsteach
A2: I five different opportunities for “voice.” Discussion, peer talk, options on @Seesaw like drawing, writing, and recording! I try to find something that works for every S! #HCPSTeach
A2: I think it’s important to give students choice so they that can be heard in whichever way suites them best (ie. drawing, words or orally presenting) #HCPSTeach
Q3 ... In Stage 2, “The Voice” has “Battle Rounds” – vocal competitions and steals. As professionals, we often collaborate to improve our craft. How do we collaborate with colleagues and “steal” good ideas? #HCPSTeach
A2 Allow students to just talk about their thinking... how they feel about the topic/book. Conferencing with students really allows connections to be made and voices to be heard. #HCPSTeach
Awww! I kept putting off starting until I had the ‘perfect procedures, perfect rubric, blah, blah’ in the end I decided to trust the process, throw perfection out the window and trust my students to meet the goal. So far so good #HCPSTeach
A3 Just being here tonight has already led me to some new ideas! Twitter has been a great resource. I'm also very lucky to have amazing teammates. We bounce off one another and form some AMAZING ideas...
Even at random moments. Grateful for them! #HCPSTeach
A3: collaborative planning and post lesson reflection are essential. Being able to participate in lesson studies and learning walks are also great ways to share strategies and styles with each other. #HCPSTeach
Q3 ... In Stage 2, “The Voice” has “Battle Rounds” – vocal competitions and steals. As professionals, we often collaborate to improve our craft. How do we collaborate with colleagues and “steal” good ideas? #HCPSTeach
I like to collaborate with lots of colleagues! I’m open to “stealing” and sharing! @TBK8Donatelli@mrsfayertbk8 and @TBK8_Peterson are always talking and sharing ideas! They are my favorite to steal from! ❤️❤️ such good support from them! #HCPSTeach
A3 ... As an Academic Coach, I created a menu for teachers Appy Hour, Lunch'n'Learn, Book Clubs ... Tried ObserveMe ... struggle is getting teachers to want to learn via these methods #HCPSTeach
A3: (again)my school encourages cross grade level collaboration! Here are my firsties helping kinders on @Seesaw today! Even Ss “steal” and share! #HCPSTeach
Q4 ... Occasionally, on “The Voice,” we get to hear the Judges perform. In terms of PD at your site, where is your voice? How do you showcase your expertise? #HCPSTeach

I want to do this! I’ve been working with a colleague ... but in truth, I observed her teaching Poetry Pie, and learned by observing ... going to suggest this next! Thanks!! 💜 #HCPSTeach
A4: our tech team leads PD 1-2 times per month. Teachers teaching teachers! I also have the opportunity to share my love of @MicrosoftEDU#HCPSTeach#MIEExpert
A4 ... I started by trying ObserveMe, but no one has (or is taking) time... being in charge of Professional Learning, I utilize best practices in planning authentic and valuable learning experiences on my campus. #HCPSTeach
A4. I embrace the #Observeme! Come on in anytime. I also volunteer to be a democracy classroom in learning walks and help out with TeachMeTuesdays when needed. #hcpsteach
A4) the really cool thing @EicholdMertzMST is that our principal @MDuBoseAdams tries to use OUR teachers to facilitate OUR PD. This is cool bc the learning continues after the PD is over. We all have special talents & we use those to help each other grow! #HCPSTeach
Q4 ... Occasionally, on “The Voice,” we get to hear the Judges perform. In terms of PD at your site, where is your voice? How do you showcase your expertise? #HCPSTeach
#observeme can be hard to get going if the culture isn’t ready. Baby steps are good for secondary. Start with ghost walks, then LW, then buddying people up or #observe me. We need to have a culture safe for risk-taking and being vulnerable #HCPSTeach
A4 My school offers a lot of opportunities for this! Learning walks, we can host/attend Mini PDs about a topic of our choice, & our TTDs just introduced the Pineapple chart this week. And I just hosted our school's first Twitter PD an hour ago ;). #HCPSTeach

My favorite is we did an “EdCamp style” training day during preplanning! It was awesome to showcase my practice and more importantly learn from other AMAZING teachers! All Ts had a voice on topics, learning, and teaching! #HEROcamp#HCPSTeach
Q5 ... In the final stages of “The Voice,” competitors battle for vocal excellence. How do you showcase your students’ voice? To your school? District? Community? World? #HCPSTeach
A5: Displaying student work in classrooms and hallways, participating in Science and History Fairs and, of course, tweeting are all great ways to showcase student work. #HCPSTeach
Twitter!!! I try to showcase the amazing students and teachers at my school everyday! We have so many amazing things going on. The world needs to know! #HCPSTeach
Q5 ... In the final stages of “The Voice,” competitors battle for vocal excellence. How do you showcase your students’ voice? To your school? District? Community? World? #HCPSTeach
A5 Most recently it was a google form documenting a discussion between the students and parents about #GeniusHour. #MoreTweaks for next time. 😂✅ #HCPSTeach
A5 ... My students worked diligently to create #sketchnotes from @NikkiGiovanniii 's poem "Nikki-Rosa" ... I was so proud I posted them on Twitter hoping for a response from the author .. still have faith! #HCPSTeach
A3) One thing that T’s @EicholdMertzMST take pride in is our ability to work together to meet the needs of our s’s. We share ideas and are not afraid to ask each other questions! We learn from each other! It’s like that saying “It’s not a competition-it’s a tribe!”😊 #HCPSTeach

Q5 Ss share their voice on @Seesaw, I post their excellence on twitter and our class spotlight bulliten board. In the past- we’ve used @SkypeClassroom to connect with teachers around the world to share our work! #HCPSTeach
Q6 ... Finalists on “The Voice” prepare specific pieces that highlight their best qualities. If you had the opportunity to award a teacher and/or a student, what qualities do you believe would need to be highlighted? #HCPSTeach
Especially since I did all the research over winter break to find out all the amazing things you could do with the suite. Oh well! We will get there hopefully #hcpsteach
Q6 ... Finalists on “The Voice” prepare specific pieces that highlight their best qualities. If you had the opportunity to award a teacher and/or a student, what qualities do you believe would need to be highlighted? #HCPSTeach
A6 ... I believe Work Ethic / Citizenship is important -- things like kindness, courtesy ... & Mastery of standards / skills ... in my content - communication skills - speaking and writing #HCPSTeach
Teachers who understand standards & use a variety of innovative strategies to promote mastery are at the top of my list! I also thrive on working with teachers who consistently employ a growth mindset and are reflective in their practice! #HCPSTeach

🤗 Everyone has different strengths so lots of awards will be needed. Qualities to distinguish would be, but not limited to: withitness, coo coo for content, standards savvy, perseverance, cheerleader, team player, Leading from the classroom, PD extraordinaire #HCPSTeach

Q6 ... Finalists on “The Voice” prepare specific pieces that highlight their best qualities. If you had the opportunity to award a teacher and/or a student, what qualities do you believe would need to be highlighted? #HCPSTeach
Q6 My answer for this would depend on the child! They are all so special and unique in their own way! Picking just a few qualities would out some students in a box and eliminate others. Unlike the voice- no child is eliminated in my room!! #HCPSTeach
Thank you for joining us tonight! Your voices are important ... and we thank you for sharing them with us! Join us next week for another #HCPSTeach Professional Learning experience!
I think Ss should be recognized for qualities they work hard for or are unique for them! My school highlights a student each month for portraying a specific trait - this month is risk taking! It’s a great opportunity to recognize Ss! #hcpsteach
