A chat where literacy education students, preservice teachers, and literacy mentors connect to discuss research and practice, share ideas, and meet new mentors for professional learning.
Hi Everyone! I’m Stephanie, a literacy teacher educator in NY at @UA. Let's get started with a lively discussion about boosting our teaching spirits and starting out right! #preservicelit
Hello everyone! My name is Chelsea Bonaker. I am currently a second year graduate student at the University at Albany, in upstate NY, studying special education and literacy. #preservicelit
Yay! So glad to see you this morning, Chelsea! I know it has been a busy week of studies and I appreciate you taking the time to chat on a Saturday morning! #preservicelit
Yay! I am so thankful you are joining us from vacation, @drgravityg! Your new book, #TeachLikeYourself fits perfectly with our theme of boosting our teaching spirits and starting the year off right! #preservicelit
A1: I have been trying to carve out time for daily reading, writing and reflection. I spend more time outside with my kids and try to simply savor the moments. They move quickly! #preservicelit
Thank you, Dr. Affinito! It has been an intense, but extremely informative and cultivating week. I look forward to sharing some of my new knowledge in this chat! #preservicelit
A1: I have been reading 180 days. I always pick a teacher resource book to read in the summer. This one has been great. Lots of ideas and affirming things to show me I am on the right track. #preservicelit
A1: While taking 3 classes this summer (which is certainly preparing me for teaching!!), I have begun reading more books that my future students would read and reading new varieties of such! I am also discovering many new resources to utilize in my practice #preservicelit
A1 I have taken a step back. Slowed down. Started bootcamp classes, gone for walks, lots of family time. I also set a boundary for work time. I have a standing phone call with my thinking partners every Wednesday but I don’t talk all day and work all day most days. #preservicelit
This is a good lesson for all. I have a hard time setting those boundaries, especially when my phone delivers work instantly. I love the standing phone call. What a great way to recharge and energize for the work ahead! #preservicelit
I have already begun to add to my collection of books with titles including Smile and Wonder. Look forward to adding more nonfiction!
#BuildYourStack#preservicelit
A2: My goal is to better connect with my online graduate students. I plan to use social media in my teacher education classes for greater connection and authenticity and then share that research with @DrMollyNess@KaraPranikoff@suzrolander. #preservicelit
This is where my notebook comes in handy to record those dreams and ideas as they appear. @LitCoachConnect has really helped me make this a habit this summer. #preservicelit
A2: I want to really commit to Workshop. I kind of soft commit every year but as soon as management becomes an issue I fall back to traditional and just stay in the safe spot. I need to not do that. #preservicelit
Mary is here! Thanks for joining #preservicelit this morning! I was so disappointed that we never met at #ILA18. I'm hoping we can connect at the next one!
A2: This upcoming school year will be an extremely exciting one for myself as I begin student teaching! My goals for starting the school year off right is familiarizing myself w/ my cooperating teacher & school district and preparing lots through communication #preservicelit
I love this. I have a reminder on my calendar to browse new journals and articles every Monday morning. It is my #softstart to the week! #preservicelit
I completely get it, Brent. This is where our tribe comes in handy to help us stay strong and problem-solve. I have learned so much from my #PLN here and on Facebook. #preservicelit
I have certainly enjoyed the use of social media in our online course this summer! I think it would be wonderful to have chats just like this one with the whole class based on weekly topics! #preservicelit

Such worthy goals, Chelsea. It is all about the connections and relationships we build with teachers, students, parents and the community. #preservicelit
A2 #1 goal for any school year is to take advantage of 1st impressions that set the stage for all that follows. How can we give the message in minute 1 that we are so grateful to have these wonderful kids in our prescience? It may be the most import thing we do. #preservicelit
Have you seen the TED Talk on bringing more joy into your life? The findings? Add shapes and colors in your physical spaces to cultivate joy. #preservicelit
Can you believe it? It is time for the third question! Reply, retweet or create a new tweet with your response, but don’t forget to add A3 and the #preservicelit hashtag!

Oh, this makes me happy, Chelsea! My hope is that more students will join #preservicelit each month and I like the idea of a dedicated class chat. I will have to pick your brain later on this!

A3 Let's expand our tribe by scheduling times to meet face-to-face at common conferences this year. Talk conversations off line and in person! #preservicelit
A3: I jump in to random chats on Twitter, All the time. Pay attention to feeds and other # that come up. I would never have found the #curiositycrew if not for following #disruptingthing tags and stumbling on #g2great and of course my Twitter leader @DrMaryHoward#preservicelit

A2 Since this is a #preservicelit chat I think we need to emphasize the value of our own learning. You are here participating in a chat in the name of future kids. Don’t ever lose sight of the importance of taking ownership of the critical role of our learning #preservicelit
A3: I am still new on developing my own tribe, but exploring various chats, such as this one, on Twitter has helped me to begin this journey #preservicelit
Yes, I certainly plan to continue joining in although our class has come to an end! Please feel free, I would love to chat and consider this! #preservicelit

A3 Voxer is a great tool to create book/article studies etc. It’s like a walkie talkie for dialogue. I do suggest you keep the group small since it can take on a life of it’s own #preservicelit
I would say don't just follow everything. I went down that rabbit hole and it really made me resent some of Twitter, that said I also stumbled upon the #TeachLikeYourself hashtag from @drgravityg and my faith was renewed. I guess the advice is jump in but be picky #preservicelit

A3. Working hard on building and maintaining connections
face to face and
virtual.
Both colleagues and Friends we have already met and those we have not YET met!
Here it is! Our final #preservicelit question of the chat. Reply, retweet or create a new tweet with your response, but don’t forget to add A4 and the #preservicelit hashtag!
Great advice. Make your own learning a priority but be selective (and don’t hesitate to use the block or mute button, Twitter is a playground of amazing but you have to weed out the awful #preservicelit

A4: Break down the established thought that everything needs a mark and the mark defines success. This was a huge issue for me this year. I started changing my practice to fit the obsessive need some had to know a grade on everything. Not this year. #preservicelit

A4 Considering how I would want to be treated and the kind of learning container I want but also not assuming this is what my students need and want. Being open to and asking what they need. Hard to find that balance and remember my students are not me. #preservicelit
A4: I have yet to experience welcoming students to a new grade, class, or school and am excited and nervous to do so this upcoming year! I plan to establish a class environment that allows my students to feel comfortable in THEIR space so that learning can begin #preservicelit
Yes this is only the beginning Chelsea. You WILL be in schools where the support isn’t optimal but you can always find support out in the Twittersphere. It’s opens the door to a lovefest of joyful collaboration. #preservicelit

Thanks @AffinitoLit for a great (workout distracting) chat this morning. Back to the grind for me. Have a great weekend all. If you have 30 minutes to spare my second podcast is up. https://t.co/7ACNQOrI1F Next week will be shorter. Just learning. #preservicelit
A4;. Send the consistent message that
a) All students matter
b) Students have lives outside of school
c) Every minute is precious and is not to be wasted!

Thank you to all #preservicelit educators chatting today! Let’s keep the rich conversation alive and slow chat throughout the month. The archive of our chat will be posted soon!
A4 As veteran teachers, I believe that we have a responsibility to need to support our preservice Ts. Harry Wong talked about this so many years ago. There is no reason for anyone to be lost in professional loneliness! #preservicelit
We need to know our students to provide a flexible and responsive community of learning. Start with what we would expect as learners and then provide students with the same authentic opportunities. #preservicelit
