A1: Okay... I guess I've never heard of this before! I need to do some investigating.. what is #phenomenom (now I have the muppets song stuck in my head) #sdedchat
I find a lot of cool demo ideas from other science teachers on instagram. @maniacsinthemid is a really good one, https://t.co/087MbwgoEe is also good. Found tons of cool gifs on Newton's Laws last week too!
YES! Took an awesome grad class from BHSU this year on 3D teaching and learning. Phenomena is amazing and everywhere, once you know how to look for it!
Cross-cutting concepts, science and engineering practices, disciplinary core ideas. Using those three dimensions of #NGSS to have meaningful learning take place in our science classrooms. GREAT class. #sdedchat
I love any connection I can get to my class. If I can pull in social studies or ELA it's so much easier to get Ss to see the correlation to real world. #sdedchat
A2: I teach STEM courses so I get to incorporate a lot of disciplines, including Science! One of my favorites right now is talking about Engineering along w/ climate change and the environment! #sdedchat
Yes! A great book for you to read would be Instant Relevance by @MathDenisNJ#MakeItReal He talks about how to connect life to our classes and our students. so many great ideas. Also, laugh out loud worthy #sdedchat
YES! Couldn't agree more! Great book, and @MathDenisNJ is a great guy as well. You will really enjoy how he connects math to everyday events and occurrences! Very quick read! He also has new book "Hacking Math", too. #sdedchat

First off you have to make students feel comfortable enough to take the risk. That takes a relationship. Then you have to model. They take it from there and they don't even realize it sometimes!! #sdedchat
A3: I ask lots of questions out loud. When students ask questions I encourage them to look it up (Google is your best friend). There often isn't one way to do something, so we wonder out loud about the ways we could approach something. #sdedchat
A3: Ss have been trained to rely on us for answers. In our Lab, the script has been flipped and the burden of investigation is on them. Today, I had a 6th Grader disassemble a snap circuit car to look at the inner workings to find why the car was not turning. Bad axle. #sdedchat
Yep! Asking a question is a huge risk, some students are afraid of speaking up or being wrong. It really does take a relationship and supportive environment. #sdedchat
A3b: I have students who will ask their questions on Google Classroom, either outside of classroom hours or because they are more comfortable. I think that's great!! #sdedchat
A4: One of my favorite things is the Sphero robot and the app, there are SO MANY things for learners to do (angles, speed, water, paint, collision, chariots... ) #sdedchat
We use Vernier sensors in our Lab but we still have not mastered them. Any tips for better application? We are using the Logger Lite software. #sdedchat
A4: Lego Robotics is the station that I am most jealous of. That and @fischertechnik. Anything that allows our students to build and have their creations come to life is pure gold. #sdedchat
A5: Trying to sneak in some Computer Science in before we say goodbye for summer. After school programming with @scratch and quite possibly another @koduteam challenge in the @SmartLab_tweets Lab before June 6th. #sdedchat
A5: The PENGUIN COOKER *dundundun* students design a lil penguin house out of materials that they tested. they get penguin icecube. we put icecube in tiny house & place in penguin cooker. we see which penguin survives! #sdedchat
We are launching 2 #weatherballoons in a couple weeks. We have a smattering of sensors on board this year. Everything from radiation detectors, to EMF sensors. We have an experiment on board for every 8th grade science standard! #sdedchat
A2: I incorporate Ela when my ss blog. In fact, the past days I’ve been a fantastic writing teacher, helping ss expand on writing. I talked about a hypotenuse today. Does that count for math?lol! I coteach the art teacher to show how art and sci are woven together! #sdedchat

Just saw this (on instagram of course!) Found it right after my kids finished that unit, so I was pretty bummed. Looks awesome though, and I think I could still tie it in to Biology for #climatechange! #sdedchat
A3: I let them play with materials and many questions come out of their mouths. If only we could get them on paper, lol! I don’t tell them answers. I ask guided quest. so they discover the answer themselves. Ss are experts at something, and I use that in my classroom! #sdedchat
