nice to be here, too! and just before classes & my semester begins tomorrow!
😊 Hello! Lisa Ceja - EdTech Coach & HS Math Teacher from Whittier, CA.
The feeling is mutual coach. :-)
Hi ! I'm co-moderating right now but wanted to say hello -you are discussing one of my favorite topics!
I teach his kids im the fortunate one.
A1
I ran a HS FabLab. Critical to success? Authentic projects to create meaningful context so tech was a tool, not the outcome.
Hello Susan, I hope you are doing well.
Renee White from Apex, NC
A1 moving from content consumers to content creators. Researching curating analyzing and designing Ss learning experiences
A1: in all grades K-8; transform has diff meaning depending on Ss & their needs.
. no, I'm not driving, silly!
Hi Sue in LA from enjoying the warmth.
Thanks Jerry. I notice we didn't take a pic together this time. Have to do that next time.
A1 Higher ed, over time multiple ways.
Susan, I am glad that you joined tonight to say hello. I understand that you are busy with .
A1: Not focusing on the actual tech, but using tech to teach design thinking and creation. 6-8 tech literacy/business classes
Anyone have a good job description for a tech integration position that you'd be willing to share? Please DM me.
A1 Always thinking of how can enhance after thinking of outcomes. Psyched S can share voice through creation & portfolio
are you in one of those google automated cars?
thanks for popping in Susan hope all is well
A1: Loving using tech and app for Ss to share their learning and as alternative assessment. Gr. 2
A1: wk w/Ts&Ss to integrate tech in k-12 classroom, tech resource varies based on Ts, 1sz doesnt fit all https://t.co/FjF9HyYpBC
Q1: How are you using education technologies to transform learning, and in what grades?
A1 My 4th grade math class uses chromebooks to differentiate topics for all learners. We use along with class lessons
A1: from using assistive tech to Twitter to to GAFE to blended learning to flipped learning
A1: I have limited tech (3 desktops, 3 kindles, just got 2 iPad minis from grant) but use as much as can in 1st.
A1 no more me talk you listen and write. Research is alive,no limits to what we can do and learn. If we dont know it we find it
Michael from Los Angeles Dir. of EdTech
A1: I use the textbook supersite and online games for formative assessments in 8th grade Spanish.
same here, hard to know when i wasn't using some form of to complement student inquiry & exploration
So great to see you at my friend :)
Q1: If you are just joining us, Q1 is: How are you using education technologies to transform learning, and in what grades?
A1.a A multimedia intro to UT, helping students transition into new living and academic environment.
A1 In many instances, we must transform our teaching first so learning impact of tech can be leveraged.
A1: Grade Seven. We just went 1:1 with iPads. Trying to figure out how to use the thermal and distort features in photo booth.
A1b
tech has changed role of T in MS/HS. Ss don’t need us for info access anymore. They need help to interpret, analyze, & use
A1. In higher education, helping each student find their voice f2f and online, also increasing time available for discussion.
A1 I used this week for a PD delivered to principals and admin to convey a need for More compelling than ppt
Hi from Pittsburgh A1 finding ways to help Ss learn Span w give options,
A1: Also use and AR apps to make interactive bulletin boards to reinforce math concepts and voc.
A1) We try to make Ed Tech pervasive throughout the school so they can be as common as a paper and iPad. :-)
A1: We are transforming our school with a 1:1 digital device program.
A1) Use tech to meet Ss at their lvl, where they are, prep for future job skills (HS) - outcome more imp than tool
A1: We've got plenty of technology - problem is measuring the impact of the technology vs the teaching vs student capability
A1 I am 1:1 chrome books. Ss collaborate using Google Apps, create, research, etc. in grades 7 and 8
A1: I use iPads in my hs math classroom everyday. My students love to Kahoot!
A1.b Streaming media and interaction allowing remote participation to live lectures and talks.
I made all of my Eng classes paperless last yr. Tech allows asynchronous learning- a must for my busy Ss
Tech helps kids reach the higher levels of Bloom's. Like synthesize.
A1 Document Ss progress to create digital portfolios. Pics, work, videos, etc. with iPads.
A1: Our Pre-K Ss love using ipads and smartboards during workstations time. They can teach US a thing or two
Doesn't always have to rely on tech. Creativity, info fluency, design thinking are 21st century skills.
A1: by using the Chromebooks in our building for more than testing. Utilizing tech at all points to make learning engaging.
A1: use in every subject!presentations, research, etc. & in & time too. Apps, websites, photo, video, etc
in teaching this sem, my games & learning grad students will be experimenting w open annotation via
A1: Technology at amplifies, empowers, and informs learning. It's not an add on to edu.
Shift in paradigms lies in the pedagogy not the technology..tech is only a tool https://t.co/8TW9jcbG4g
A1 In many instances, we must transform our teaching first so learning impact of tech can be leveraged.
A1: transform learning through connecting w/ global classrooms & talking & .
Can you say more? We're most interested in the early grades.
A1 use Moodle LMS, Google Drive for storage and writing, Kahoot for fun learning assessment, many more things
A1: has greatly improved the communication between me and my HS Ss
A1: But most favorite tech is connecting with other classes using Twitter and Skype.
Great to have folks from higher ed joining us tonight! Welcome!
A1.c Highly interactive explorable content making abstract mathematical and physics concepts real. https://t.co/3YuIqWwWXm
Sounds like great stuff. https://t.co/DExEKy7O3o
A1: transform learning through connecting w/ global classrooms & talking & .
Thanks, . Can you give an example?
Tech helps kids reach the higher levels of Bloom's.Like synthesize. https://t.co/3HbRPGXSMu
whoever painted the happy bench is trying to tear Hendersonville apart. Stay strong, we can get through this together.
In higher Ed trying to create connected learning environment. Student led
DOn't forget about the videos :-)
A1. I am using Nexus tabs and cbooks w kinders. I use tabs for QR activ. & reading fluency & c books 4 testing & g classroom.
Q1: I work with one school mostly, K-5. Using chromebooks and iPads
Hey, - if you want to try double dipping in a second chat tonight, we've got some student-centred stuff going on in
A1c
In K-5, tech gives chance for real problem solving. Das n Dot, etc let kids solve real problems. “Detrvializes"
A1: Use to teach my 8th graders about copyright and intellectual property. In a digital world, they have to be careful!
A1 if any folks are interested in how my Ss & I will be using open annotation this semester, see https://t.co/hbud7DZKtu
Thanks for your response! What global classrooms in particular, ?
A1. Not about the tools. About the changing roles teacher/student
Made Revolutionary Videos with Green Screen app was awesome
A1: I'm using Google Classroom to organize & present my class content every day. It's nice to have one place for everything.
A1: K-5 using tech to have Ss show what they know, w wixie
A1: ! Our 5th birthday is February 17th, 2016.
A1: at , digital learning tools are part of the fabric of our community. Ss create and collaborate with devices.
A1 Makerspace & Robotics in the Media Center...exploring new tools from also
My must-haves for being paperless are ! But we use many more tools for content and assess.
YES! Digital Citizenship education is SO important!
. So true! Ss need us to help them learn how to eval online res, apply what they see online
It seems that engaging tired admins at the end of the day is way harder than Ss. Break out the shiny things.
Any good sites that may not be commonly known for K-4?
thanks! My Ss love it; we raised $ to get clean water to 2 villages in India
how did you do this lesson?
A1.d Use Mathematica, Matlab, and Maple, real world science and engineering software, to generate more transferable knowledge
Yup. Less focus on tools, more focus on getting out kids creating and innovating.
https://t.co/cRJtws8KHJ
A1. Not about the tools. About the changing roles teacher/student
A1 W/ shared iPads my kinders are able to capture & reflect as well as share & create. All voices heard Favorite tool is
A1 Use google classroom, hyperdocs, interactive slides, collaboration in 2nd and 3rd grds
I am trying to get one. Keep asking.
And now you can use Google Classroom to make “exit tickets” too. Love https://t.co/DUWzR41aui
A1: I'm using Google Classroom to organize & present my class content every day. It's nice to have one place for everything.
Q2 coming up in 1 minute…
A1: love & (Ss tweet what' neat weekly)
Pre-Serves need to get connected before they are out. It could make the world of difference. https://t.co/YObmeAA0CS
In higher Ed trying to create connected learning environment. Student led
My kinders like to write their own quizzes for peers too
same here, helps keep me organized and refresh my memory when needed
Thanks, . Do you have an example of a lesson that transcends paper and pencil? https://t.co/VapnX2EMGi
Q1: I work with one school mostly, K-5. Using chromebooks and iPads
I streamlined 1 of my classes in the fall, hoping to do the other this spring.
A1: I love using technology for formative assessment and allowing Ss to express themselves through creative projects
looking at q1 answers still trying to parse what makes various pedagogies & tools transformative. what's been transformed & how?
A1: 8th grade Ss will be creating animated constitutional shorts as resources for 5th grade colonialism unit.
Q2: What model, e.g. the SAMR model, are you using to transform T&L with ? If you're using your own, tell all! :- )
Yes! Mine too - I love the availability to capture all of their physical creations too
Copyright School has fun videos, and we do a "is this copyright violation" scavenger hunt on YouTube
Agree! I tell my Ss that they shouldn't even need a substitute. That works for ALMOST all my classes!
A1: Ex-Final exam went from scantron to Ss watching videos, interactive maps, and pic galleries and answering questions.
Yes you did and they were. Thanks for sharing https://t.co/oHROEkrlDy
Made Revolutionary Videos with Green Screen app was awesome
A1 There are thousands of tech tools mostly stuck in status quo system. How many have transformed ed?
A1. Using the tech to engage and involve everyone in the room worked well this week.
A1 I use like a curated textbook for my classes
Isn't it great when things go well. Congrats https://t.co/60GOurtLlR
A1. Using the tech to engage and involve everyone in the room worked well this week.
is going on! I'm on the sidelines tonight. But hope to see great discussion! https://t.co/KrG0i5SFDx
Q2: What model, e.g. the SAMR model, are you using to transform T&L with ? If you're using your own, tell all! :- )
A1b also use to write animated narrative stories 2nd and 3rd grds
A1: google apps for ed, google voice and run my program. HS instrumental music
A1: has given Ss chance to experience Antartica and Volcanoes. and great ways to connect.
and what do we mean by transform in the first place?
Having Kinder write quizzes is a brilliant idea.
A1 Ed tech increases sharing. It reaches outside of the classroom.
A2
IMO by MS/HS tech integration should be organic. No “now we use tech” more like “why would we not use tech as a tool?"
Q2: the skills/content comes 1st then tech IF it fits. I don't keep any model at centre but needs of my Ss.
Yes, it used to be class website for me, but I like the convenience of all the tools with Google Classroom.
Kahoots is a nice review tool. Have you ever had the students create their own review in Kahoots?
thanks- always looking for new ideas to spice up and copyright lessons!
A2: I follow the SAMR model and have shared it with countless Ts to help them integrate tech where they are comfortable
A2: we are using SAMR mainly and TPAC. Recently developed a badging program for training
A2: Using SAMR, and lining it up with DOK. Sometimes people think Tech use = higher DOK. Not true at all.
A1 Docs & YouTube helped Ss create a soundtrack to enhance lit book trailer created via green screen. Great energy & thinking
Especiallly when they have to determine right answers and create incorrect answers
A1 Slack as an internal team twitter or internal class projects.
I ignore SAMR. I misses the point of learning. Sometimes a solution doesn't need tech
A2: I use technology to foster learning communities: intelligence amplication rather than artificial intelligence.
A1 I love how tech helps the absent Ss. Can be involved live via a document or has information quickly from a shared file
we use quite a bit for Ss to self reflect
Q2: Get called away? Q2 is: What model, e.g. the SAMR model, are you using to transform teaching & learning with ?
Thanks, Greg! We use tech in art all the time
that is the question. Gradually move focus to the student and their experiences...reframe the lenses
A2 I think about SAMR but good tech T&L is like all learning: critically thinking, collaboration, student-centered learning.
A2. SAMR makes sense to me and is the model I use for tech integration, but not for everyone. Use what is meaningful to you.
Yes, I've had them make them for final exam review. Then they can share with the class.
A2: We are using the Technology Integration Matrix out of University of South Florida
A2 ex
In Alg, dont debate calculator use; teach kids TI BASIC & have them make apps to do Alg. Deeper understanding / no crutch
Awesome! Students of all ages can do anything we encourage or allow Very cool :) https://t.co/GjXjGw8P1A
My kinders like to write their own quizzes for peers too
A2 Not so much models as learning theories, such as spaced repetition, multiple representations, active learning, etc.
Digitized worksheets and tests cannot be our "redefinition" of learning with technology. Our students deserve more than that.
Good question, ! And depends upon how tools are used. Some Ts can make mousse out of mud! https://t.co/t3ASEgLpEJ
A1 There are thousands of tech tools mostly stuck in status quo system. How many have transformed ed?
Right? Copyright is the hardest/least interesting thing I teach, but one of the most important!
A2 I use the model that students choose the best solution for the activity. May include tech, may not
A2 Have used SAMR, kind of mix it up, try new things, reflect on why I use its purpose/benefit for Ss
I would expect nothing less from you my friend. https://t.co/AoaDqpDKjn
Thanks, Greg! We use tech in art all the time
shift from teacher centered to student centered. From passive to engaged learners
Curriculum needs to be designed with tech in mind UBD
A2: combo TPACK & SAMR, pedagogy change imperative for tech to be seamless part of curr https://t.co/II33YMghdl
Q2: What model, e.g. the SAMR model, are you using to transform T&L with ? If you're using your own, tell all! :- )
A2. I use SAMR and other philosphies more as an outline or suggestion for teaching with tech, I don't explicitly stick to it,
Allow sts to connect, collaborate in ways not previously possible, create content that demos learning
I especially like the pool analogy for SAMR. Shared many times with colleagues & Pre Service Ts https://t.co/6Vztx75MQM
A2: I think mu biggest challenge is getting people to think in terms of frameworks vs just getting them to try something new
A2 I agree that SMAR can be too prescriptive, but for those just starting to integrate it is a clear, process-driven model.
A2 Most importantly, all concepts and realizations supported by well designed and published research.
. Just read smthg that said that we would never Q whether or not to use tech in "real world" workplace. Why in ed?
Transforming education is still debate around the 'why change?' and 'How to change?'
A2 I guess SAMR is good for lateral entry teachers but if you have been through a teach prep program you don't need
SAMR model plus TIM in FL for teacher pd focus...making progress w 1:1 in Flagler...
A2 SAMR easy to follow and use
a strand of my research & teaching concerns so i'm all abt moving beyond c/room (& conceptual) walls
A2: we are using SAMR mainly and TPACk. Recently developed a badging program for training
A2: Find about five tech resources which serves as the legs my class stands on. Be an expert in these five.
A2 SAMR for the most part
A1 We are using ed tech in all grades, tech enhances learning, using specific on smartboard from Kinder to 8
I use the app on my smartboard. Great for painting
My Ss designed video games on paper for , then scanned w/ iPads & kept editing in-app. No status quo!
A2: SAMR model is great for measuring technology integ. Just remember it doesn't measure meaningful learning experiences for Ss.
A2: don't have a model per say..just try to utilize within all as much as possible to grow Ss into learners
A2: SMAR is what has worked for fellow colleagues and myself with technology.
ok but what does that look like? what are the pedagogies that create conditions for "student-centered"?
A2: The integration of a model occurs innately for Ss. Not always with us adults.
a little late to the party tonight
Here it is... https://t.co/fzTNjm6gQW
A2: SAMR model is great for measuring technology integ. Just remember it doesn't measure meaningful learning experiences for Ss.
A2 I've seen Ts try to embrace SAMR module but then lose ground due to lack of resources or having gotten negative feedback
and what of the equity concerns? how does concern for access, participation, & divergence relate to why and how?
for me google clrm makes activities more interactive for all Ss b/c of accountability and ability 2create
A2: SA is the foundation and expectation. We try to push our teachers into "MR" as gently (most of the time) as we can!
so many sts and ts confuse it with citing sources. I do "copy wrongs" to address misconceptions.
Great, hope you learn lots.
word. SAMR doesn't measure any student learning. I says I use this tech
A2: Hit the higher levels of SAMR, Ss ❤️ showing what they know w art and tech (4th gr = fractions) https://t.co/QL3UmQUtY3
True! Too often 1:1 is viewed as a tech initiative, not about teaching & learning https://t.co/yNsKHcpDZS
that is the question. Gradually move focus to the student and their experiences...reframe the lenses
Sometimes tech is best for helping at basic point of need.Ss who struggles to keep up can relax knwng everything will be there
Q3 coming up in 1 minute…
A2: learning is transformed trough inquiry & personalized learning w/ support of tech
A2: We use SAMR as a foundation during our iPad boot camps for Ts. We also emphasize that not ALL learning needs redefinition.
tell me more about how a platform like google clrm fosters opportunities for student creativity that didn't exist before tool?
agreed, but how do we quantify student growth for the admins who need to see metrics?
gives educators the tools to use video data and coaching to improve instruction and drive gains in student success
A2c
I have a hard time fitting tech integration in a systematic box. Seems counterintuitive. Beauty of tech is its adaptability.
A2: I use SAMR to remind me to further develop my lessons, past the substitution phase
Thoughts on how to measure meaningful learning experiences for Ss, ? How have you done it? https://t.co/F9EwkOxIkm
A2: SAMR model is great for measuring technology integ. Just remember it doesn't measure meaningful learning experiences for Ss.
SAMR is good for teachers who are afraid of tech. Not student who know how to really use it
A2: need to remember SAMR is not a ladder or hierarchy; its fluid
Q3: What professional development and other support are you giving Ts to help them optimize the power of ?
A2: We use SAMR. The Technology Integration Matrix offers a greater in depth look at tech integration https://t.co/5jgm8TEcet
indeed, there's an aspect of S agency & creativity that i resonate with deeply, aligns w equity concerns
A2: I feel like a lot of the tech resources pushed out by edu-twitter celebs are low SAMR/DOK. Doesn't help Ts who need help!
Oh wait MR as in SAMR. Got it ;)
it is a great tool others are eg Socrative for exit cards Slack for forums
we should be letting students be better evaluators of what is best for assignment
my favorite ex is problem based learning. Achievable w/o tech but leveraged allows for enhancements
the expectation is that all Ts substitute and augment, modify and redefine is next and is most of our work.
A3
I’m co-running device integration training this summer in Chattanooga TN!
forcing a teacher to use tech reduces the students ability to make better decisions
A3: We are starting an Instructional Innovation Academy this month for Ts. Focus on pedagogy, not just trendy new tools.
A3: We have instructional tech per campus. Job is to work individually with teachers to help them integrate tech
I like this visual too, but I think of swimming laps. Not all lessons stay in one area of the SAMR pool https://t.co/8NRZrfi9fj
I especially like the pool analogy for SAMR. Shared many times with colleagues & Pre Service Ts https://t.co/6Vztx75MQM
A3 initially weekly professional developments to help with teacher
acquisition of tech skills - Appy Hours
iPad bootcamps? I like this PD concept! Tell me more!
A3 or what prof development opportunities are YOU creating w peers to engender power (& greater equity) w ?
A3) I have Tech Tuesdays, and allow for EdCamp type of opportunities when possible.
There are many, many teachers who are afraid of tech!
A3: On my campus I am hosting EdTech Workshops once a month Period-By-Period. I get small groups for at least 1hr.
A3 our school holds mini conferences, Ts are surveyed b4 hand on what they want to learn & we find experts in that area.
A3b
I’m a fan of the experiential tech PD model. Give tech, give contextually relevant project, coach, explain, grow
A3: IMO the best PD is individualized to the needs of the T. Meeting them where they are and helping them get where they want
I know but you shouldn't FORCE them. They should let students choose
A3: Teachers teach as they are taught, so medium must match message (e.g., use social media for PD about teaching with sm)
Equity (gender, racial, ethnic, economic, education, geo/political) will be a driver of change, despite status quo.
A3: EdCamp style PD where Ts can have choice & differentiated instruction (that's how we should do it for Ss + Ts!)
A3: Free up some time for Ts to play and create lessons which integrate tech accompanied with sound pedagogy.
all S voices are able to be heard. F2F learning is awesome... Yet not all Ss can weigh in on all topics! Tech helps
A3: We have PLC groups led by a technology teacher and occassional PD sessions.
Yes, that is how I explain it. We can't tread water in one place. Sometimes it is good to move to the shallow end.
A3: Host various tech trainings. Also, buildings request trainings their teachers have needs for, I go to them.
A3 Meaningful PD from and Personalized w twitter. Need funding & space for custom PD.
A3: our building if focusing on this during our PD day tomorrow. I'm presenting on making BYOD work in your classroom/tools.
A3: ask Ts "what are your goals for Ss?" Start there. "What do they need?"
when you force a teacher to do something it usually doesn't turn out well
Q3 In case you missed it: What PD and other support are you giving Ts to help them optimize the power of ?
A3: since I am a t this may be diff: we had a great style staff to share & explore and it was awesome!
A3 As a techie, I'm always ready to help Ts, incl. sharing resources, spontaneous 1:xx PD sessions when a T reaches out help
A3 all I get is Twitter and my PLN
tech allows us to measure Ss by how they articulate an idea via writing, film, & any other method that's shareable
A3: We have a tech coach available during our prep time. Occasional workshops during lunch
We r beginning a badging system for GAFE use. We need tech integration staff & I am currently proposing student help desk
Didn't get to intro. myself: Chris Gosselin, HS. ELA and Digital Learning outside of Boston. Glad to jump in!
A3 - timely integration support, researching tools & integration strats. SUPER important to work w/content coaches
A3: we also help each other a lot in meetings and
Agreed. That's an issue of "usage" not the SAMR frame itself.
A3 I look at what they are currently doing n the classroom and modify that first
Connecting tech to real world learning is really important. Well done.
gives educators the tools to use video data and coaching to improve instruction and drive gains in student success
A3c
Depends on T
Some need evangelized—see benefits before trying
Others need experience—get hands messy
Others need to quit
A3: 1:1 pd during planning & after school, present tools, org tech academy, training Ss tech team https://t.co/ZQEiBeETv1
Q3: What professional development and other support are you giving Ts to help them optimize the power of ?
otherwise, what's the point?
A3 need to build the relationship with the teacher first and then they will trust you & tech
A3: district offers PD workshops run by teachers; I taught 1 on using Twitter for your PLC/PLN - so vital to staying informed
A3: Developing a "Design" training for teachers. Amp up their lessons visually for our visually-stimulated digital natives
A3 we just had professional learning today on ideal learning environment, PBL, 4 C's, and building our PLC via Twitter. 😍
3 days of basic training involving practical application of technology integration. Ts leave w/ 5 ready lessons.
A3: A few = Screencasts, Weekly Tech Tips, 1-on-1, Small Groups, Monthly Workshops
Tech has allowed my Ss to use whatever they want to complete an assignment. Let them use what they like to get me what I need
This sounds awesome! Please share any results/resources you can! https://t.co/bE3msyq3Vt
A3: We are starting an Instructional Innovation Academy this month for Ts. Focus on pedagogy, not just trendy new tools.
A3: model tech, give time to play, get Ss to try & rate. Need time to check in & see how Ts are doing. Follow up is issue
the basis of my class is I teach tech I don't know. We co-learn together
Oh no, ! Gotta go! This was fun (but FAST!) I'll try to be back next week!
not many know what those are. They are missing out.
YES! Building relationships with reluctant teachers is KEY!
not a fan of tpack either
Measure Ss success w/multimedia self assessments and authentic
Twitter & are great easy tools! :)
SAMR works with with DoK. Level 3 & 4 does not equal high levels of DoK unless we are "intentional" about it :)
A3: once a month, we offer -like sessions and conf. sessions on tech. T designed and T led! Ts pick their sessions.
A3: faculty need to model teaching with tech for pre-service teachers
like anything in life, w/o a "purpose" it's hard to invest in it. Tech is no different.
A3 New to county-2016 goal: help more w PD/ help Ts integrate edtech for optimal learning vs. replacing old methods digitally
I would love to be a part of this.
Agree. This sounds awesome. Would love to hear "steal" more.
A3 our future ready coaches also send out emails with videos for different levels of learning with new skills to lrn that week.
A3: I've also hosted an "Appy Hour" for EdTech Help after school.
A3: Create a master Google doc complete with resources for the entire staff to use.
A3) If we can have PD with choice and with the 2 feet rule it would enhance all training.
that's music to my ears! what are your experiences designing such learning in ?
I persoanlized it to me and my students
A3. Tech coaches that understand your content integration goals are just the best. Encourage risk, showcase wins, and have fun!
A3b: I also try and fellow Ts to participate in Twitter chats such as this, , , ,
I've only heard of cronuts and the long lines to get them at some places. I'm missing out.
love that there's practical application during training. So important
Love the idea of using badges!
We've been planning for about 6 months, first session is tmrw! Looking at our Digital Native Ss and how they learn
where to start?? This could be a long conversation
2 years ago I asked his thoughts as I struggled with what I felt was a type of hijacking of his model.
Yes, please share more info on your Instructional Innovation Academy!
A3 School supports T learning by offering tech camp on the first three days of summer. Ts teaching Ts tech. Org by
Yes, many Ts are still afraid they might break the tech 😢
Monthly for 2 hours. We limited it to 50 people this round. Idea is they take it back to their buildings & are leaders
isn't the force a good thing to use? :D
Q4 coming up in 1 minute…
So jealous of you Ts who are getting specific PD on tech integration.
What frame do you use to ensure high quality use of technology to support intentional learning
A3: Good point about needing to incorporate tech in teacher prep https://t.co/UpwM07m9y1
A3: faculty need to model teaching with tech for pre-service teachers
why not let students help decide what tech should be used
A3: Trying to get everybody on board with Twitter as a PD tool to collaborate and share experiences and resources
My issue is that I get so excited by new tech/apps. Must choose what's best for your Ss!
We did a mini tech conference during our last staff meeting. It worked well.
We did a mini tech conference during our last staff meeting. It worked well.
is that any work that you're involved in? if so, please share!
We do something similar once a month. Great results! https://t.co/SRNe6W3SFX

Q4: How are you helping students use/see their digital devices as more than a substitute for pencil & paper or gaming device?
digital spa summer institute for faculty
. better late than never! (Sorry for slow tweets, on phone 😝)
Word to ya mother -SUPER AWESOME song is my hero
A3d
and myself are working on an inquiry based PD model for and integration!
When I issue devices, I ask the teachers to take them home and break them so we can learn how to fix em. https://t.co/iKgazM1da1
Yes, many Ts are still afraid they might break the tech 😢
I would love to see ANY materials/schedules you might be able to share. We are trying to do more of this!
What kind of PD do you get?
I'm patient. You've made bold statements. I'd like to understand your perspective.
it's only scary to not know everything in the 20th cent. Ts gotta get with it
we use the 3 question model. What did you do? What did do? What questions do you have?
I agree, but it's a tough sell on my campus. I keep trying though!
Because that would give them The Power! And that would be too scary!!!
you're here! Be the PD lead for your school! Pitch these ideas to the powers-that-be!
A goal for USM & UNE here in ME. , & I are putting into professional context
A4 My Ss use devices to research, write scripts and report news via social media.
philosophy, lots of standards and EQ's, budget updates, scheduling, necessary but want so much more.
A4 Ss are learning that they can access items from anywhere. Collaborate on the go, and work when they wish. learning non-stop
an interesting Q. are we privileging *digital* devices over pencil & paper? pencil & paper are powerful too
the boot camp can travel.
The struggle! your ideas and answers please! https://t.co/qdMUGtiWPd
Q4: How are you helping students use/see their digital devices as more than a substitute for pencil & paper or gaming device?
Preaching to the choir, preaching to the choir. ;)
A4: In my job I get the opportunity to go into classrooms and not only do teacher PD but kid PD on using tech.
Why do you think it's a tough sell (is for us too)? Ts just not comfortable? Is that an ok excuse anymore?
A4: biggest thing is getting them to think of device as a learning tool and not just for gaming! I use tech when relevant
thanks for the reminder. I do as I can. try not to be annoying but still not giving up
A4 giving Ss choice in how they present their knowledge. Using to collect their learning. Opportunities for reflection!
A4: We stress devices as tools not toys from day 1. We also set high expectations for Ss to display their learning through pbl
A4 Tech needs to be modelled, played with and explored
A4: Using the devices for collaboration. Practice activities with immediate feedback for self-assessments.
in k I talk about devices being tools vs toys & how they can help w our learning I pt out how lrning takes place w devices
How do you ensure that these questions lead to students learning the expectations?
tech use should be content specific. Really subject should exist. Tech crosses all subjects
Q4 (reminder): How are you helping students use/see their devices as more than a substitute for pencil & paper or gaming device?
PD w/o something tangible to leave w/ is like going to to stand in line.
A4: I think it starts with the expectations and the activities modeled by the adults in the school.
A4: 7th Graders do a BYOD research project. Research stats, benefits, downsides. Create presentation package to persuade admin
A4: through Twitter chats w/ professionals, creating own YT channel; Instagram portfolio of learning, Skype w/ professionals
free your students. They will surprise you
A4 We should encourage our Ss to use tech like we do: Tools for learning, sharing & publishing. Embrace tech rather than fear it
Intrigued by your automated attendance!
I'm not sure, I think I have to provide a specific inservice on how to start.
A4
Three letters that have been sooooo misused but are key:
When done right, real problems naturally make tech a tool.
Any worries about forgetting over the summer? Or do Ts then practice all summer? https://t.co/9EQ7f6cKv8
A3 School supports T learning by offering tech camp on the first three days of summer. Ts teaching Ts tech. Org by
A4: Try to use variety of ways to show value in creativity, building, design, research, teaching, communication, collaboration.
A big learning curve for many. We use it every week to increase proficiency but change is difficult https://t.co/jCDxOXkPYe
Why do you think it's a tough sell (is for us too)? Ts just not comfortable? Is that an ok excuse anymore?
Less than 30 minutes, I will be hosting We'd love for you to join us!
we discuss in class the questions raised
A4 Show them ways to use it for education, practice, give them fdbk fast
isn't there an ipad case that can survive a 10 story drop? :)
A4 The vision for tech has to begin with a vision for what teaching and learning should look like in each classroom.
A4: My kinders view iPads as comm. tools. Sharing our learning, seeking input, learning from others. Currently in a global class
A3: We did edcamp style at our last meeting. Ts came up with the topics.
A4: my Ss were curious about edtech; they planned a trip to a 1to1 schl; came back and wrote a grant for tablets
Agree. SAMR addresses more of at levels 3 & 4. That's why I combine it with DoK.
A4: by incorporating tech in multitudes of ways. From worksheets, to projects, to tests, and student collaboration.
Yeah! Uncomfortable is fine. But flat out refusal isn't. They wouldn't tolerate from Ss.
A4 If you ban tech Ss will want it more. Embrace it to teach & model good digital citizenship
A4b
You can’t “show” Ps / Ss value of tech as a tool, you have to foster their discovery of its abilities. Don’t preach; teach.
A4 finding authentic learning opportunities in their world is critical for changing the mindset...YouTube, Twitter, etc.
A4 Interactive visualizations & simulations. Nowhere else can we visualize a wave function interacting with a potential.
like this concept - student PD. Esp in a HS where training to be a professional seems more relevant.
They must have an amazing teacher. https://t.co/30oO25cvkC
A4: My kinders view iPads as comm. tools. Sharing our learning, seeking input, learning from others. Currently in a global class
A4: also through GAFE/Google classroom & blended learning using LMS
We need to feel a bit uncomfortable to learn sometimes. The key is to keep using it in meaningful ways https://t.co/tNfsv6Jask
I heard this ques at . Is it ok for Ts to be uncomfortable, yes, but they must also model bravery!
A4 a device is a window to the world, to history, to life in the rest of the universe. It allows Ss to share their inner world
A4: Use devices for formative assessments. Collaborate with other Ss outside of class.
But, it's 2016. "I'm not good with tech, so..." is no longer a viable excuse. (Says the tech T)
How do you get Ss to think of device as a learning tool, w/out making it seem educational (and dull)? https://t.co/NEplYlyOw4
A4: biggest thing is getting them to think of device as a learning tool and not just for gaming! I use tech when relevant
A4 Showing, leading, and doing the work with them. Show how learning is at their fingertips. Unlimited methods and sources.
A4 - By working with Ts plan and reflect on their curricular tech for teaching, we are helping Ss
did you like the edcamp model? ..just curious while lurking on
Ah but what frame do you use to preplan so that you know that the experiences will lead to concepts
A4 Can your pencil or xbox do that?
Exactly! https://t.co/AMpJ6LDCP5
Yeah! Uncomfortable is fine. But flat out refusal isn't. They wouldn't tolerate from Ss.
A4: Ss can create original art/content on digital devices, great way to integrate art w other subjects https://t.co/1l3O6Hk9h8
Part of learning is continued practice. We ask our Ss to practice some over the summer. Same should be true for Ts.
A4 jumping in a bit late, but do pencil paper activities need to be replaced entirely?
I agree. We have "play time" with every PD for tech.
Important concept in order for digital citizenship to continue to grow
This provides an understanding of complex concepts and equations behind quantum mechanics
I meant I reached out to him for clarification because his model has such power.
preplan? We have open discussion and I ask directional question.
And sometimes modeled for the adults first to get understanding and buy-in? https://t.co/qK0DXjjYSy
A4: I think it starts with the expectations and the activities modeled by the adults in the school.
here's the challenge when you have Ts who use the device just for gaming, don't buy in to use of tech, not a role mdl
No, sometimes they are the best tool for the job!
your acceptance of unicorns makes me think yes
A4: blogging is a great way for Ss to share/reflect on their learning, needs to have global audience
Look no further! https://t.co/SEwkxTZdH6 features games sims and apps meant for engaging learning https://t.co/FsvO1iyTNi
How do you get Ss to think of device as a learning tool, w/out making it seem educational (and dull)? https://t.co/NEplYlyOw4
A4: biggest thing is getting them to think of device as a learning tool and not just for gaming! I use tech when relevant
NO. They still a place. Substituting Tech for pencil tasks isn't integration. We must take it to the next level.
a start but I still have chaos. I use google drawing documents with links now on my website for organisation
Once Ts start seeing the wealth of resources they improve. I ask for Ts to reflect through Twitter https://t.co/dLQovxtIIe
But, it's 2016. "I'm not good with tech, so..." is no longer a viable excuse. (Says the tech T)
Develop an iPad case - an interesting for students!
Yes! Principals and administrators but model what they expect of their teachers!
Bc we host sessions once a month, we have repeat sessions so Ts have more than 1 opportunity to learn https://t.co/cOQsQe5NT9
Any worries about forgetting over the summer? Or do Ts then practice all summer? https://t.co/9EQ7f6cKv8
A3 School supports T learning by offering tech camp on the first three days of summer. Ts teaching Ts tech. Org by
right...I think it is more important to consider the task. I see it as a thinking revolution not a tech revolution
A4: We use the device for creation. Ss make videos, record their voice.
love tech but believe we need a balance
I believe you have to give them tasks that are meaningful and have a broader audience than the teacher.
Allowing devices to help w exploration & curiosity. Ss see how devices can be helpful tools but also fun for games
Q5 coming up in 1 minute…
Ts being uncomfortable but willing is def. manageable but Ts who tell me they're too <fill in blank> to use tech is maddening!
A4 Use them in the creative process. Ss build their own simulations learning both the subject matter and computer science.
A4: love doing Edcamp model during staff meetings; 6 topics, choose 3 for 3, 20 min sessions
A4 Research, ebooks, communication, PBL goal: integrate more each year 1:1 game-changer & more time needed for transformation
We also had a lot of parental participation since Ts are sharing pics of things happening in the class https://t.co/1DDBbL1XtZ
A4: By first asking what problem we want to solve, not what app or device we want to use!
Many of students also post their creative writing to to gain an audience. Audience is impt. https://t.co/TShAzhQLMP
A4: blogging is a great way for Ss to share/reflect on their learning, needs to have global audience
would have to be a high school level project. Phone cases are hard
I use collage to show learning; it's neat to see students use it for schoolwork when I haven't suggested it
Check out what is doing with authentic tech integration. One of the best I’ve seen in the country.
This did go well. Ts liked the choice and sharing with each other.
Yes! It's part of teaching now! Are you too busy to grade? Contact parents? No? Oh..ok...i see...
https://t.co/Wgt4PNHWef
Ts being uncomfortable but willing is def. manageable but Ts who tell me they're too <fill in blank> to use tech is maddening!
Q5: How are you engaging your students around digital citizenship?
You have to tell me more about this.
Sorry I'm late 😞 The kiddos story time take WAY too long...
Tell me more, I'm intrigued!
A4: Tech needs to alter Ss experience. If you can print your digital publication and not lose anything, you're doing it wrong.
A5 It’s a double edged sword, so difficult, but so important. Students in middle grades struggle to understand the importance
A5: Media has the best FREE resources for teaching digital citizenship
Preplanning is a way to address your concerns. It's what makes SAMR & TPACK effective
A5 I have some teachers using resources
I'd like to think that leaders establish a vision rooted in purpose! each graduation requirement needs purpose.
Family first! Glad you could make it! Q5: How are you engaging your students around digital citizenship?
Definitely! Backwards design (tech is nearly your last decision)! https://t.co/uc9D0tVWSH
A4: By first asking what problem we want to solve, not what app or device we want to use!
we love ! It is part of our routine. So much that can be done with it.
Lean towards TPACK because the focus is on teachers and their knowledge, seems actionable to teachers https://t.co/5VnSL5oGvu
A5
Again, its more of a thinking shift than a thing shift. DigCit is a mindset that must be demonstrated and cultivated.
A5: through engaging them in Twitter, Instagram, blogging, blended learning, case studies, real life news stories.
Jumping in! those of doing edcamps@school, what r some sessions u found most helpful? My school has tried but they didn't work
Q5: We have been providing large scale presentations by students and about to have guest speakers
A5 Citizenship is an ongoing conversation. At morning mtgs, when introducing tool, when sharing tweets, when eating lunch w Ss.
A5: & I are stressing the positive aspects of social media and it's ability to promote social change.
Spend a lot of time of copyright and attribution. Looking forward to doing more with
A4: Appsmashing to create products (, , ) in showcase what they know!
A5: dig cut gas to be integrated in work they do not taught in isolation.
What do you like about resources?
A5: is a huge part of my curriculum, so most of my stuff is Project Based Learning related to DigCit. Many birds,1 stone
If the grad requirement can easily be replaced/subsituted with technology it seems like a waste of the time we all fight for.
Q5 (again): How are you engaging your students around digital citizenship?
yes, tech as a resource (& a great one) but so is butcher paper, pens for silent conversations. It's in how you use
A5 Use , keep conversation going, participate in activities, open communic
for me anything that requires the use of tech unnerves me
Agreed! Focus on the goal and objective first! Sometimes tech isn't always the best way to meet goals https://t.co/SGQwjIO129
Definitely! Backwards design (tech is nearly your last decision)! https://t.co/uc9D0tVWSH
A4: By first asking what problem we want to solve, not what app or device we want to use!
Right, no, not at all! But if using , how to use it for activities beyond what could be done w P&P?
A5 Our next step would be to extend conversation w/ Ps. Share resources like etc & how we engage S in class.
A5: I'm the Tech T, but I shouldn't be the only one teaching . We are ALL tech teachers now!! DigCit applies to us all!!
Would love to use your donation for such a Lab. :-)
After your talk at , I wouldn't miss ! Inspiring & encouraging stuff to know I'm not alone in the fight 😄
make the process relevant even if the product is educational.
our most successful were our tech sessions- specific tools taught. Also my Ts loved Things That Suck!
A5: By talking through learning get from it(even me T!!!😮 😉)& getting Ss in learning tech community like blogs
Tech is a relative term. Social Media, laptop, tablet, cell, pen, paper, lab equipment, ... ;)
not sure I understand, need more clarification why it hasn't worked :)
A5: learning to listen to the marginalized voices
As the only tech coach in my district the pre-made lessons are great to give teachers as a dig cit starting point!
A5) We have Lunch-N-Learns for parents for digiCitz, but if a teacher uses teach they should teach digiCItz.
What's was ur opinion on the two one better than other or used in conjunction ?
Fill in the blank is SO true! It makes me crazy
my phd dissertation involves social media
YES! It takes a village to raise good digital citizens. Parent, teachers also need education!
The global class turned me into a S as well! We're all giddy to see what India, N.Ireland, & Canada have to show us
A5 Great resource on digital citizenship is this health teacher ->
Yes it does, if I could only use
All tools have purpose, tactile connections are important. So, why use tech if you could be using P&P? https://t.co/odMS0DXKSy
I love my pencils and will not give them up. My paper stash is beyond reasonable.
true. Chalk Talk (VT activity) works for my Ss too.
critical citizenship applied as digital citizenship. great.
We have a unit for each grade level. Also and digital citizenship units. Great resource!
but if you submit a pen and paper as tech is that going to be accepted
A5: My presentation on teaching DigCit through PBL. My handouts and student samples. Steal away!
https://t.co/aPiLLUAMFW
Q4: we've been using common sense's resources but this is definitely an are where we need to improve
A5 & I use & to engage Ss in
it's because you had a drive. Taught myself Photoshop because my Visual Basic class lacked purpose for me
A5: digital citizenship lessons are inter woven in mini lessons as tech & devices are introduced. & Repeated Modeling
Just added an elective course in digital literacy as we are moving to 1:1, piloted this yr. Needs to be everywhere in curriculum
Russ, FL Principal. A5: Created an Instagram geared to Ss & for a tool to teach citizenship.
Luv action component! Lets use tech to get Ss to not just be passive consumers of info but create change https://t.co/7RWVj48Err
Q6 coming up in 1 minute…
A5: Also sharing & why needed etc w Ss & reminding them tech is the tool but people are effected by it.
And would need Ss and Ps to sign a liability waiver
Sorry to have missed was a boe meeting with my students presenting about what we do in G & T.
students need to build up their hand skills. Need for future
A5: Direct instruction.Model. Practice. Instruct, model, practice.
Thanks for sharing! Great resource!
. absolutely-& hope to exchange resources to do so effectively! is a must for PSTs!
I love tech and I hope for replacement, but convos need to be around thinking/creating not typing vs. handwriting.
maybe for my follow up study; I'm near the end writing up my summary :)
A5: We use digital passport resources and lots of conversations
Q6: What last advice do you have for teachers and schools striving to use to empower student learning?
This sounds fabulous 😊! Mind if I take your idea for the Things That Suck discussion?
we missed you - but I bet they did a great job!
anyway supcases are pretty cheap
My only pt is that what some might seem as normal ie pen another would feel the same w social media
A5: Critical to include parents in this conversation and start @ young age.
Natural conversations when showing our class twitter account, my own twitter , or helping S with class blog enhance
Speaking of Digital Citizenship, my book on the topic for Corwin is available for pre-order :) https://t.co/wS4HK0hai3
In Ed we must continue to learn new tools (tech) so that it becomes as normal seeming as paper
A5: To PBLs w tech, add component on rights and responsibilities to embed more digital citizenship https://t.co/CLXkHhewzk
A5: digital citizenship lessons are inter woven in mini lessons as tech & devices are introduced. & Repeated Modeling
It's an ongoing process! Strive to get better every semester, every year!
A5: Have Ss squeeze out toothpaste & then have them try to put back. Explain that is the same in SM. Once out, hard to get back.
Tech opens the door to students interacting with primary source documents in amazing ways. Such documents foster citizenship.
A6 tech will screw up at some time or another. Don't give up. Use as teachable moment
A6: Don't hand out a single device until you've answered "WHY". If you can't sell you stakeholders on why, will fail.
I like graphite on to find resources and apps. Reviews about use, and tips.
integration is a that is downhill after the first few steps. Jump in and do IT https://t.co/igtzMd5DEG
Q6: What last advice do you have for teachers and schools striving to use to empower student learning?
A6: Meet the kids where they are. If you don't have tech, talk about creativity, design, info fluency. ISTE Standards.
A6: be open and don't feel as if u have to use everything - find 1 or 2 tech items you like & own them!
A6: Give teachers and students adequate training and time to learn.
A6: my advice is start with tools you can use across your curriculum. The more broad a tool, the more often you can use it.
A6: come up w/ plan before spending a bunch of $; what is goal? how measure it? how know you met it? Start w/ pedagogy.
A6: Understand SAMR Model, you don't have to jump into the "deep end" immediately & sometimes it's OK to stay in shallow end.
Willing to share your Instagram on citizenship, ? https://t.co/j8agy8kRIJ
Russ, FL Principal. A5: Created an Instagram geared to Ss & for a tool to teach citizenship.
A6: keep nudging things in the right direction to improve Ss learning & it will happen!
A6: Don't be afraid! Try & try again! Get time for Ts to try things & learn from eachother.
A6
integration will fail if you expect perfection. Allow iteration. Learn while/through doing.
but when students can't fold or tape or cut that is they model for digital ideas
EPIC failures are the best! ( I can finally say without cringing)
best advice, no pressure, use what fits your practice.
A6 Start small, be courageous & be kind to yourself & Ss. The Tech Fairy doesn't visit as we sleep so we can awake knowing all
I'm waiting for the autograph session!
I've been using with all of my Ts and Ss lately. Super engaging and powerful!
A5 Tech can be a gateway to primary source documents that open the door to engaged citizenship.
A6: nothing beats engagement. Tech is an awesome tool, but innovative/engaging T are necessary & Design with standards in mind
A6: Start slow, provide lots of tech support, keep Ts and Ss motivated to continue trying new things.
A6. Find someone or multiple people for support, use twitterchat or other resources, then go for it and relay on your pln
Let your Ss play with tech and watch them soar.
A6 Provide Ts with ongoing, on-site support. Ss are great Ts when it comes to tech. Be flexible & open minded.
I fail all the time. Ask students him to fix. Sometimes fail on purpose
A6: Best advice? Be purposeful. 1to1 is a ratio, not a program. Invest intentionally.
A6b
Don’t think has to be $$$. Look for innovative uses of tech you already have. Don’t be a typical consumer. Think :)
A6
1) Know where community is at
2) Start there
3) Change structures to enhance learning
4) Tech value will follow
. Don't give up don't ever give up!
q6: have students present & share using tools they like to use to collaborate on what is out there & is useful.
nice. There's a great TED on SM as a tattoo! Hard to remove and easy to see.
model, demonstrate, be there for staff to teach to answer questions and learn together
A6: if you have it, use it! Don't let it sit idle. Find ways to better your lessons with technology in the classroom. Ss love it
A6: employ design thinking to solve problems as often as possible. How To Make Toast is great! https://t.co/rwU5qBus2z
A6: employ design thinking to solve problems as often as possible. How To Make Toast is great! https://t.co/UnbtCxa2aZ
A6: Know what the goals are and the vision. Include Ts in the process and dialogue.
Could this be a session for ?
Everything is either a good time or good story, EPIC failture is a fantastic way to learn
the students did a great job. student driven learning.
is that money helping fill the money bin
A6: Don't be afraid to learn WITH your Ss! They just might teach you :)
A6) Start small with the teachers. There may be digital natives in the classes but they need to know how to use the tools
Any examples of plan or plan items you could share, ? https://t.co/ve2CzDPCC0
A6: come up w/ plan before spending a bunch of $; what is goal? how measure it? how know you met it? Start w/ pedagogy.
A6: Always have a frontline testing out resources (Edtech resource team). Also a student help desk makes Ss invested.
Agreed - WHY is first question that must be answered in any change initiative!
Where is this money bin of which you speak???
We give students enough voice they produce amazing content. Learning happens when they struggle
do you have book t-shirts for the human billboard
Thx ! Time to get the kiddo to bed
thanks for a great chat & some insight. 😊
If I order T-shirts you'll be the first on my list ;-)
I have one somewhere; will have to look lol :)
When students struggle, in part, it's our responsibility. We need to adjust & adapt our teaching
Thanks for joining this week’s ! Don’t forget to follow your new connections from tonight!
I complain about this all the time. I go into school and do paper projects
You mean the bottomless money pit that is our swimming pool?
Thanks for having me tonight!
Thx mods. Whirlwind hour of learning.
Thanks for another great ! You guys that organize this rock.
A6: Sometimes shallow end is appropriate given goal, staying in shallow end all the time however not https://t.co/G0d613KOdv
A6: Understand SAMR Model, you don't have to jump into the "deep end" immediately & sometimes it's OK to stay in shallow end.
Love it. I often give Ss the rubric and standards they must meet and allow them to pick the tool
Thanks for a great tonight. You are all awesome!!
Is their a modeling contract that I need to sign. Like how many photo shoots I need to do?
Thank you to guest moderator for a great chat!
I share a conversation with on my podcast tomorrow! definitely check it out!
ok the inverted money bin
Thanks for all of the wonderful conversation!
yes - if you haven't gotten your fill with , you can now participate in :)
So true. Our IT, edtech, PD ppl need to constantly remind! https://t.co/EtSJbvkpcY
Backwards design is astonishingly forgotten once the shiny device gets introduced.
A6 I would just add that administrators should seek opportunities to learn from students and teachers. https://t.co/DVD1NuzCSE
A6: Don't be afraid to learn WITH your Ss! They just might teach you :)
