Jacquelyn! Welcome to 2ndchat!
Hi Heidi! So glad you stopped in!
Hi I’m Fitsum, Graduate student in ID at University of Nebraska. I’ve also my own son in 2nd grade
: Q1 What is your iPad situation? 1:1, 2:1 or other?
Hi I'm Joe, like Vickie from Ontario.
We are doing the Q & A format. Q1 is answered with A1 and so forth.
I have no iPads currently in my classroom and wondering how I am surviving. So many things to do with them daily with Ss.
A1: I have 1:2 but almost enough for 1:1.
They are so amazing especially in the primary grades!
Krista Cebula, North Dakota, 2nd grade
Hi! Mary Beth from Ithaca, NY.
That is what I started with. Well, actually I started with 1 for me and then I had 5 for a long time.
A1: Have 9 iPads & 2 Chromebooks for 21 students. We have access to more Chromebooks in school library, but need to be signed out.
A2: I have 14 iPads in a classroom of 22…interesting sharing with others :)
A1: 1:5 ratio for my kiddos. Would love it to be higher!
A1: we have a few in the school & I have my own. We are BYOD so many of students bring their own. Getting a school cart soon.
We have access to a mini iPad cart & a chromebook cart that we have to sign out. But I have 16 iPads in my room.
A1: Last year, we were 1:1 and LOVED it. Would love to go back.
Sharing is a good trait to learn. :)
Q2 In which subject areas do you use ipads?
I can't imagine going back now!
A2: I use them for EVERY subject! :)
love the BYOD idea. Do you run into any problems with it? digital citizenship, etc
A2: Mostly used in Math, Reading, & Writing….but working on things with Science & SS.
Hi I'm Shelley from Vancouver, BC
A2: All areas-including Morning Meeting!
A2: I don't have the iPads but I have 10 Chromebooks for my 18 Ss. We use them for dailies, writing, and genuis hour
Some questions tonight will not require much time but others will so be looking for the Q :)
sorry I am late. Colleen from. NY
BYOD can have challenges with app compatibility, paid vs free apps etc...
Q3 Do you use your iPads for formative assessment? Do you have an example?
A2: I teach only ELA, but we use them in both reading and language arts
Yes but I find less problems as the students really seem to know their devices.
I visit a public elementary school in Lincoln NE, all 4th graders have 1:1 Chromebook ,2nd 3rd share Chromebook
Q1 & 2 1 iPad and access to a chrome cart with 30 chrome books. Use them for everything.
A3 Tons of options for assessment from GoFormative, to Nearpod, Kahoot etc...
A2: Every subject, but a lot of use during reading, writing, and math
THey are so amazing for those areas.
A1:I visit one public elementary school in Lincoln NE, all 4th graders are 1:1 Chromebook and 2nd to 3rd share Chromebook
Q3 we do STAR (reading) testing on the chrome books
A3: I use the app for both formative & summative assessments! Truly love the connectivity!
A3. Have used the app where stdts explain how to solve a math problem, explain vocab, share text connection, etc.
These are ! Thanks for sharing!
A 2: the teacher use chrome books for comprehension and reading, she plans to use for reading fluency
A3: seesaw for video recordings of Ss reading their own stories or those from books
A3: science assess - ex: create piccollage to show 3 states of matter, math use prodigy, RAZkids for reading
I would love to see some of your states of matter projects. Can you share one?
Love the versatility of to see how the Ss are picking up the skill. this Thursday.
You are welcome. You can so adapt them to your grade level. I get SO much from them.
Q4 How do you create, model, and assign tasks? What's your favorite app for them?
how do you like math using that prodigy website?
is a great program! Lots of online free PD & Help videos. Stdts love it! Connects to parents too!
A3: is great! Kahoot is also great in primary. is also great for formative too!
and I are in a board where we have locked down iPads and use a specific suite of apps. Need to be creative!
Such a great tool for helping develop reading fluency! Love versatility!
A4: I am starting google classroom after spring break for my Ss.
I've been using that a few times this year. I really like it.
Thank you! I can see these working so well for differentiated learning!
A3: have observed Pear deck is great for interactive direct instruction # Teac880J
A4: With tasks I sometimesuse my device to model what we are doing with the projector.
Just really getting to know seesaw but see it as a very useful way to get insight into student learning
A4: Sometimes I give Ss choice on the App they want to use to show learning especially with .
A4: Learning much from PD in Pjs this week. Want to try using QR codes from journals to show video of how to do station
A4: I use small groups to teach a task card/ project especially at the beginning of the yr or with a new app
Parent connections is major plus as well!
A4: My favorite go to apps for iPad centers are and !
Some Apps used are Pic Collage Creation type apps
A4:Here is a favorite center I had this year: https://t.co/Gq0culuHOz So simple but good! I learned a lot about them.
LOVE Green screen videos are such a fun way for Ss to show what they have learned
A4 I've done a fair bit of app mash with Green Screen and Comic Life or Storybuddy. It's great to write in background
I would love to learn more about that! Can you share an example?
Me too! I'm just learning but love it!
Love this! Need to learn more about for new projects.
It is my GO TO app. You can save projects in progress and rerecord if mistakes are made. LOVE
that book project is awesome!
We did it as a project for a teacher. She had a chinchilla and asked if we could out more about it to share with her kids
We did it to help a teacher friend that just got a chinchilla and wanted to know more. :)
Q5: Do you use iPads for student projects?
A5: YES! I love using them for projects and presentations.
A4: another app we’re just getting into is word clouds. Great way to share info on character traits https://t.co/BCfvzA9GnJ
A5: writing projects for biographies, nonfiction response writing
Do kids log in? Or do on their 1:1 device? Curious how to save in on shared devices.
A5: I need some iPads! Such amazing work and display Ss can show!
I usually get the Ss to export and put it on
I have them logged into my account. They can also be saved in many places like Google Drive.
Mine export to Google Drive.
A6: This was a project we did last year trying to persuade the 3 little pigs to buy one of our homes:
https://t.co/sH2WYsrgda
Q6: What have you learned from tasks like these?
I know that I wanted to totally be involved in this one and my son got crazy and needed a bath.
A5 During projects I'll have the Ss tweet about how their project is progessing too. Good way to put in some writing
We often use our iPads for projects. Notability, Keynote, Pages and others are important for creating. I give choice
Yes you do! I so love mine even when I just had a few.
Chime away! We're glad you are here!
We have out kids use my laptop and our new projector things to make video QR codes. They love it.
A6: I have learned that my shy kids REALLY like iPad projects. They feel more confident with them.
I can't wait to see all of the great ideas after this is over.
Use the hashtag and others like etc and we'll read it!
A6: I also see growth throughout the year by actually hearing and seeing their thinking with the recordings.
A5. When we were 1:1, stdts used for "Work on Writing" during . They loved it!
A6: All these tools sound like a great way to show Ss growth at conferences!
A6: I also learn those that need to be challenged and those that need to have a little extra help. BETTER THAN AN WORKSHEET! :)
I share them with parents throughout the year. Great for intervention students too.
A6: Our world of teaching is changing . Worksheets are of the past!
I am making a DVD of all the presentations that my students did this year.
A6. Gets parents involved in daily work & thinking. & have been great for connecting school & home.
Q7: Have you encountered any issues using tasks like these? How can they be solved?
I'm here at conferences now but I've had a lull (finally get to join ). SeeSaw is on my board to show
using apps are a Great for differentiating projects
A7: The hardest part for me was managing all the videos but now that I can upload them to Google Drive, it's super easy.
that is awesome! It would make conferences that much more enjoyable :)
A7: I also find that I may think I'm totally clear on the directions but I'm not. We've had to punt a few and try again! :)
A7 Ss can forget steps to start a project. I always have an step by step anchor chart to refer to in case a S forgets
A7: I think the hardest thing will be just the starting part of it all! The Ss would think it is easier than me!
It's fun and if a S comes with a parent they are proud to show some of their work
That is a good idea for the anchor chart. If we go 1:1 next year I might have to do that. Thank you for the idea
I post the iPad task cards in acrylic stands at the stations. That seems to help.
A7: Getting Ss started is the hardest part, Ss catch on quickly after that
Hopefully I can get a couple iPads yet this year to start dipping my toe in the awesomeness! what do you think?
It's just like everything else some get it the first time & some still need help with saving the video :)
new to seesaw but seeing that it is going to be my "go to" for building student portfolio and showing growth through videos
Sometimes we just play with an App at the beginning to get used to it
A7: Punt! Have done that many times. Need to be honest with stdts. Gotta stop, troubleshoot, & keep going.
A7: I also had a hard time managing all the cards for word sorts. I found a BIG secret for that. see next tweet
Agree correlating all the projects together when devices are shared can be tricky!
A7: Print each copy of the word cards in a different color. Then when you find a word on the floor, you where it belongs. :)
It also has a blog which you can connect with other classes. My Ss looked at posts from a 2nd grade class from China
I am actually doing my teaching portfolio on to show my admin this spring!
A7: the best thing about having them at centers is you only need to make 4-6 copies of the cards. :) reuse :)
A7: Saving the work when the devices have restrictions and without Google Drive has proven to be tricky and challenging!
what is that blog called?
A7 Having a tech team at school where capable, older Ss can come & help younger Ss with the technical piece.
Q8: What benefits are there with tasks like these for parents, the school community, teachers and more importantly the student?
Yes, my 2nd grade class has a kindergarten buddy class. We help them with tech projects.
My kids love to take home a QR code to have their parents listen.
A8: If a picture is worth a 1000 words, what is a video worth?
Inside of is a blog that you can access thru setting and if you have blog name of other Ts, you can con with them
A8:I learn SO much more from these 15-30 videos. It's like having conferences all the time. They are so cute on them too.
A8: We aren't setting our Ss up for factory jobs anymore. Ss need to be problem solvers, critical thinkers, and innovative!
I love using QR codes but I never thought about sending them home. I have them out to share w/ the school though.
I also share lots through my Twitter class page.
They are lining up in my classroom to make QR codes for my listening center. It helps me out and they love it.
A8. Widen the audience! Kids inform parents & community. Stdts made daily "Iditarod Update" videos for 2016 race!
A8: I learn so much about my students' personalities with these projects. They grow so much in confidence!
I would love to hear one. :)
A8: Engages Ss and allows for creativity and showing thinking in unique ways!
Well, that hour went fast! I know I missed some awesome projects & ideas that I can't wait to check out in the Storify.
They love it because mine is a video so they are either in the video or just showing the book. I will e-mail you on next week.
PLEASE SHARE what you do in your classroom! You are doing amazing things! We are better together.
