A1: a big challenge I have, especially in PE, is the ability to self regulate and properly communicate when a situation has gotten frustrating or stressful. #5thchat
Hello #5thchat! My name is Tika, and I teach 26 amazing 2nd graders and mentor teachers in Las Vegas. I am grateful for the amazing people in my life who are always there no matter what😊
A1 - For me, the biggest challenge is finding time for it. We have strict time frames for each subject and SEL isn't one of those subjects, unfortunately. Thankfully, I integrate it into nearly everything we do! :) #5thchat
#5thchat I run the @FoundationBOL -- we are focused on increasing access that Ss and Ts have to innovative strategies in schools. We give scholarships to kids, grants to teachers. I ❤️ sharing resources with teachers, and learning from you, too. I'm a former HS Spanish teacher.
A1. We've heard from educators and folks leading SEL work on the district/school level that some of the hardest barriers involve finding the time and resources to properly integrate SEL into daily work. SEL isn't a one-and-done initiative, it takes time & effort. #5thchat
A1: Understanding students emotions is a huge part of becoming a teacher. I try my best to put myself in student's shoes and really analyze what they may be feeling and where their point of view is coming from. #5thchat
A1 My biggest challenge when I was a 5th grade teacher related to SEL was to make sure I was meeting all of their needs all of the time. Trauma informed practices & cultural responsiveness are so important. #5thchat
A1: I think the biggest challenge is supporting students in calming down and/or turning it around. Sometimes they feel they are stuck in a rut and what is the point in getting out. #5thchat
A1: Biggest challenge is time to make sure I connect and get it right. Every kid is different and some need more face time than others. I wish I had more of it. Thank goodness for our amazing counselors!!
#5thchat
A2: 5th graders need to develop the ability another person's feelings during conflict and effectively use "cool down" periods when emotions run high. #5thchat
Hi all! My name is Madison, and I am currently a senior at the University of Texas at Tyler. I am specializing in mathematics for 4-8 grades. What is some advice you have for me as I dive into student teaching next semester? #5thchat#Sp19edfb4338
A2 - Although I think that all of these are extremely important, I'd advocate strongest for:
- Self-Regulation,
- Motivation and
- Social Skills
#5thchat
Introduction: my name is Gabriel Leon, I am from Troup Tx, I am not a teacher yet, but I am getting my major is Spanish and my minor is Education. I am grateful for my family. #Sp19edfb4338#5thchat
A1: I found this stat-- really puts into perspective what our kids face. Thank you @edutopia for this resource and to @tikaee for including this in our discussion #5thchat
A2: Self awareness and Self management...do you have tools in your toolbox? Are you vulnerable enough to get help? How adaptive are you to feedback?
#5thchat
A2. There are typically two "axes" of skill types involved in teaching SEL – intrapersonal skills (or "self" skills, like self-regulation, stress management, growth mindset) & interpersonal skills (or "other" skills, like empathy, collaboration, and social awareness). #5thchat
Did you know that they are creating software systems that provide journaling/meditation/online modules to educate students that schools are now using instead of suspending/expelling students? A different type of intervention. Thoughts? #5thchat
A1 I agree with this. This is even a problem in the adult world today. As teachers, we need to help our students see that we all have different backgrounds and opinions, and we should respect others opinions even we we disagree. What a complex topic! #5thchat#sp19edfb4338
A3) You can use technology in the classroom to keep the class engaged. Use it to play games that are revolves around a lesson. It’s such a huge factor to keep the students interested to learn #5thchat
Thank you for sharing this resource. Our counselor shared a amazing PD on the importance of understanding and using Trauma informed practices with our Ss. #5thchat
A2: I would have to stay that its important for 5th graders to learn self-awareness and relationship skills. It will help them to learn to work together and help people understand what they are trying to explain to their teacher and classmates #5thchat
The great news is that we have the opportunity to help students cultivate and shape their #SEL skills through the relationships that we forge with them. It can happen organically, naturally, and in powerful ways. #5thchat
I am a huge fan of finding new and unique ways of doing pretty much anything. Kids become use to the way things are done, and approaching something new such as this, could change the way they act. Providing the results we look for in a school setting. #5thchat
A3: I use technology almost daily; it's a great way to increase engagement and easily assess. My favorites are @Flipgrid, @ClassDojo, @padlet and @GetKahoot in my ELAR classroom! #5thchat
In reply to
@amyvalentine555, @Flipgrid, @ClassDojo, @padlet, @GetKahoot
Asking these rhetorical (or not) questions to students can really provoke them to think critically about what they are able to do, and how their perceive themselves. Especially HS Ss. #5thchat
A3 My mentor teachers have chromebooks for their classroom. Because they do several PBLs throughout the year, these come in handy. #5thchat#sp19edfb4338
Congratulations! Welcome to the best profession on the planet! Ask a lot of questions and enjoy every minute with your cooperating teacher and students. #5thchat
Thank you-- this is an excellent explanation! Some of these skills can be enhanced through "ah ha" moments, through struggles, or through modeling. Always wondering...what makes some kids able to acquire these skills on their own versus others? #5thchat
Belinda from DC. I teach MG reading intervention. Currently grateful for technology that just allowed me to talk to my aunt in New Zealand for free #5thchat
A3: As a future educator I will definitely be incorporating technology in my classroom. I think it will be very beneficial for students to learn technology at a young age, because their future will be revolved around technology #5thchat
A3: There are 3 instructional coaches in my district & we recently led PD on engaging introverts. One of the ways is to use backchannel chats. Here are two of our favorites: YOTeach : https://t.co/7ETJ9dsPzf and BackChannel Chat: https://t.co/h2IrJx8fl5#5thchat
A3 I use QR codes, @GetKahoot, and @ReadWorks with my Ss all of the time. I also use a variety of short videos to help build background knowledge. #5thchat
A1: A big challenge is not being able to help students outside of school, the encourage students receive in school does not always works by negative experiences and lack of support in the outside world. ##sp19edfb4338#5thchat
A3: Wow I love this! I think it's important to intertwine technology in our classrooms. Students can use technology and 21st century skills to really master content and also be engaged during the process. #5thchat#sp19edfb4338
Stellar! And in effect, using technology can help to build those #SEL skills. They allow for differentiated instruction, self-advocacy, independent thinking, and much, much more! #5thchat
A4 - We are NOT one-to-one yet and checking out carts of computers can still be challenging. We are all sharing a limited number of devices, while incorporating an increasingly larger number of web tools. We're all just trying to take turns & share! :) It can be tough! #5thchat
A4: One of the barriers we are seeing is teachers taking a risk and trying something new even if that means it doesn't work the first time. Also learning how to not integrate tech just for tech sake. You must think about your why, purpose, & will tech enhance the lesson. #5thchat
A4: I think it is having the training and comfortability on using the tech tools for lessons. I think teachers get #comfy with what they know and don't always want to push the envelop. #5thchat
A4: The school I have been placed at this semester does Lunch&Learns for their teachers. They literally give them a lesson over integrating technology into their lessons while they eat lunch. I think this is a great idea. #5thchat#sp19edfb4338
A4: Barriers are definitely--just because you have it, do you actually need it? Not every tool is worth our time and investment. Slow and steady. #5thchat
A4: As many have said, lack of access can be tricky. We are not 1:1 so a lot of collaboration on tech assignments is a must. I wish we had access to more devices! #5thchat
A3: Visuals help-- technology can help bring to scale opportunities for #SEL development be freeing up teacher time, facilitating differentiated instruction, and allowing Ss to work independently and regulate their time, minds and emotions. #5thchat 🙏 @caselorg
A4: I think one large barrier is parents. I think this because generationally they are not familiar with technology and do understand how it can beneficial to the growing of their child #5thchat
A5: Videos that explain from master teachers or people who have a lot of knowledge in the SEL area is helpful for Ss. Also, a community that is supportive online can show students that "It's not just me...I'm in this with others!"
#5thchat
A5: Some students feel safer "behind the screen" which is sad, but true. Using this as a positive tool allows many to have a voice that they don't want to share openly. #5thchat
A5: I feel digital tools provide everyone a voice and level the playing field for all learners. Often times I have found it is the student who I struggled with the most that shines when given the choice on how to showcase their learning! #5thchat
A5 - I use @Peekapak as a source of content for my 4th graders as they teach their #KinderPals social-emotional skills each month! Peekapak provide a fun picture book & activities for each skill! Check them out here: https://t.co/YGvKFZOfoR#5thchat
We are creating a movement to reimagine what "school" can, could, and should be. It's for the dreamers, for people who don't mind imagining The New. Check it out: https://t.co/3kWZhiufji#5thchat#shiftthis
I promise we are not selling anything-- it's about capturing YOUR voice.
A5: From what I have seen, it gives students the opportunity to work alone, small groups, or whole class as well as collaborate. This builds skills that not all social interactions and #oldschool methods can do. #connections#5thchat
A5:The anonymyty of @PearDeck lets my kids let me know they're struggling without the possible embarrassment of speaking up about it. It removes the social pressure to "get it" and my kids are more honest about their understanding of a concept. #5thchat
Yes, I am currently teaching comparing 2 versions of the same story w/diff. cultures. I ❤️sharing videos of diff versions & sharing snippets of countries used as the setting. I also like giving my Ss choice to learn about diff. things about the country. #5thchat

A5. Digital tools are a great way to personalize a student's SEL experience and journey, and to provide them with the space and methods they need to process ongoing curriculum around social-emotional skills #5thchat
A5: I think digital tools can be very beneficial for students. There are many apps, videos, examples, etc. that can be used to enhance social and emotional skills. People use video games for example to meet people from all over the world and become the best of friends. #5thchat
A6: Tech and SEL have a tricky relationship bc so many use tech as a social/emotional weapon outside of school. It's our job to help kids foster a healthy relationship both with their peers and with technology. #5thchat
A6: Digital citizenship is a big part of SEL & we can use tech to reinforce those skills. Ss become better digital citizens by having opportunities to be digital citizens! Ss may be tech savvy but it doesn't mean they know how to use tech to learn. #5thchat
A6 We can use Pixar shorts to launch discussion on how to treat each other. I used several during #bekindweek. I also believe we can use digital surveys to ensure we are meeting the needs of all of our Ss. #5thchat
A7 Establishing class norms and building relationships with each other is the foundation of our class. My Ss are not afraid to check each other, respectfully disagree, or support each other. #5thchat
A6: Its important for students to use their SEL skills separate from technology at times, but also to use them to be professional with technology. Students need to comfortable with technology for their secondary readiness, #5thchat
A7 - My kiddos give each other critical feedback that helps them improve (#QualityBoosters), are accountable for each other while working (#ResponsibilityPartners), look out for one another, and pick each other up when someone messes up! #5thchat
Thanks everyone! 2 Chats in one night...my head is spinning & my eyes are blurring, but Iloved learning from all of you!
And to all a good night!
#5thchat#ShiftThis
A7: When we split into teams each team chooses a captain. The captain is someone who is cool, calm, reasonable to negotiate/talk with, and represents the team well. I really love this because students who aren't the best at the sport are chosen to be captain! #5thchat
Q8: What is one thing that you learned tonight that you can implement in your class immediately to help support the SEL needs of your students? #5thchat
A7: Peer-to-peer relationships are very critical in practicing SEL skills. Students can work together to communicate, critical think, and become self-aware #5thchat
A8: I will definitely use some of the apps people listed in my future classroom. I also saw some great ideas and ways to help grow SEL in my PE class. I will for sure be more mindful of it! #5thchat
Thanks so much to everyone who participated in this evening's #5thchat, especially to @amyvalentine555 for moderating such an awesome chat!
Join us next week as @LittyMathaiEDU moderates!
In the meantime, have a wonderful week!!! :)
#5thchat We use a great protocol I learned from @edutopia ...The 3A’s: Aha, Appreciation, Apology. Ss choose one to share at the end of the day. It is a great way to end the day😊
