Q1 Once we’ve communicated and clarified the goal that our school have a culture of reflective practice, how can we celebrate progress toward that goal? #educoach
A1: An essential prerequisite for this is to define what it looks like and sounds like to establish this environment. Then we can acknowledge steps we're taking that get us closer to that goal. #educoach
Q1 Once we’ve communicated and clarified the goal that our school have a culture of reflective practice, how can we celebrate progress toward that goal? #educoach
A1: I think about celebrating progress publicly and privately. I know I definitely find it meaningful when both of those occur -- that motivates me. #educoach
A1: Describe what the goal will look like when you’ve made incremental, even small steps. Draw a visual representations fit and keep it on your desk. Crazy right?#educoach
A1: my big takeaway was that celebrations need to be timely (which is super hard to do unless you stay focused and organized) and connected to the goal of creating a culture of reflective practice #educoach

A1 Creating a safe space where educators can tell their story. Modeling what it looks like, and celebrating when teachers have those life changing realizations. Celebrating more than scores.
#educoach
Reminder for all of us #educoach peeps: Celebrations needn't be big or formal. A simple acknowledgement, a nod, a high-five, a compliment (even third-party) can go a long ways...if we're recognizing and celebrating what's important to us!

Yes! And I agree with this so much. I struggle sometimes again with this, being in multiple schools. I work hard to maintain dialogue digitally, but the F2F time is so limited. #educoach

Q2 Celebrations need to be calibrated to goals. What might be a goal for reflective practice with an individual teacher? What might be a celebration for reaching that goal? #educoach
A1: I think about celebrating progress publicly and privately. I know I definitely find it meaningful when both of those occur -- that motivates me. #educoach
A1: One of our celebrations involves monthly "rockstar" awards (usually painted rocks) given from a staff member to another staff member. Sometimes those celebrations of one another are personal or professional successes. #educoach
Related question: Do we ever stop and ask our peeps HOW they'd like to be recognized and celebrated? It's a critical part of honoring the individual and differentiating our support, yes? #educoach
A2 Using our Continuum of Self-Reflection can help us identify teachers' current reflective habits and the "next step," or capacity-building goal, for their reflective growth. This gives us a target as coaches.

A2: I have a teacher that is in the Action phase. I’m thinking a good goal for her would be to practice accurately assessing the impact of her lessons on student learning #educoach

Q2 Celebrations need to be calibrated to goals. What might be a goal for reflective practice with an individual teacher? What might be a celebration for reaching that goal? #educoach
A2a: When I teach in a classroom, I ask the students for feedback on the lesson and reflect with the teacher. I feel like after that experience that the teacher trying a similar strategy might be a worthy goal. #educoach
The grand intricacies of human interactions. Love it - good for you! Now what are you going to do with that information, and how often will you refer to the data you collected? #educoach

Q3 Promptness of celebration and calibration can impact how often teachers focus on reflection. How can coaches support prompt feedback on reflection? #educoach
A3: I’m curious to learn more about the different roles of admin vs coaches ( in the Continuum). I feel like it’s important that everyone is focused on celebrating and calibrating often #educoach
A3: Celebrations should be worked into the reflection part of the coaching cycle. Have Ts reflect on their own and prepare to share what they're proud of when you meet. Be sure that the T is doing the majority of the talking. #educoach
A2 Really hoping to video and share a few of our "veteran" teachers as they tell their stories and reflect on how they have grown to our new teachers to get them started, and help the to understand we are all growing:)
#educoach
A3 Reflection, feedback, coaching, celebrations...the more we make this a CONTINUOUS, ONGOING process, the easier it is to make sure it's all promptly addressed. Steer away from each of those as individual events and more towards the way you do business. #educoach

I am still trying to figure it out! I have definitely used the data for individual teachers, especially if I’m of recognizing them publicly. I want to make sure it wouldn’t have negative effects #educoach

A3 Effective coaching requires the right balance of scheduling and availability. We schedule times to reflect. We look for opportunities to celebrate. It's a part of daily work. #educoach
A3: Everything really begins with questioning. I feel like most questions can be opportunities for reflection. And, as a coach, asking a question is NEVER the wrong move. #educoach
Now the wheels are turning...why don't we use the model (self-directed learning cycle) and language that we do with our students, with our teachers? #educoach
Thank you, Michelle. "Always" is a wee bit of an exaggeration, but I sure try to bring my A-game wherever I go! My folks taught me, "Leave the world and its travelers a little better than you found them."

A4: Every successful goal-setting conversation included, at some point, the question, "So, what is it you'd REALLY like to get better at? What do you want to improve?" The teacher has to OWN it.
#educoach
A4: I worked with a teacher (and friend) to more closely align her learning targets with the state standards. She noticed her students' performance lagging, and wanted to clarify her goals for lessons. #educoach
A4 Successful goal setting requires working on one (maybe two) at a time and filtering out all the other things for now. When the goal is specific AND something the T/S/person is ready for, it gets accomplished. #educoach
A4 One of my proudest moments as principal was working with a teacher who was worried that not all his students understood the big ideas of a lesson. So he set a goal to use "100% hands" to confirm their understanding! #educoach

Powerful! RT @livin4thesummer: @stacy_bigham Tonight I reflected on a new team, and I decided to focus on the "baby steps" Helping them to be the leaders in their learning..not me:) #educoach
A5 I like to break goals down into mini steps. First ____. Then ____. and so forth. It provides natural times to celebrate, forms a plan, and makes it seem less overwhelming. #educoach
Q6 SMART goals can become SMART-R -- if we add reflection as a component. How can we maintain the reflective component of goal-setting throughout the year? #educoach
A6 (Sorry for jumping the gun) Weave reflective dialogue into every interaction. And clarify in advance that you'll be asking a lot of questions designed to help your teachers grow as reflective practitioners. De-mystify our coaching approaches.

A6 SMART-R eats SMART for breakfast.
#educoach
(You're going to talk with your teachers about teaching anyway, so you may as well address their reflective habits, right?)

A7 I'm going to take away a heavy dose of optimism that there are amazing coaches in the trenches out there, working hard to support our teachers' varied and complex needs! Go get 'em #educoach peeps!!
A7: I've just started documenting and planning based on tonight's chat. Looking for ways to parallel the work we are doing with our students with our teachers so that it's not "something new." #educoach
Love that, Andrea! There are so many parallels between what we ask our teachers to do with students and how we ought to support our teachers. Amazing and #CommonSense really. #educoach
