#caedchat is for California educators, by California educators. All are welcome as moderators and participants discuss issues that emerge in California education, which are generally applicable to other regions of the United States.
A1: Hi everyone! My name is Tatiana and I'm a student at Chapman University in Orange, CA. I love our ability to rally together in times of need & raise funds & supplies for victums, or even awareness for different causes. #caedchat

Q2: It’s hard to help if we don’t know. If your community has been affected in *any* way, please share here, then add it to this list: https://t.co/s2Hr6LjDFe#caedchat

A2: Our big fires were last year. This year, we've been reaching out to others as much as we can. Trying to repay what others did for us. Just knowing people care makes such a difference. #caedchat
I love that I live in a large, diverse community. No one can represent it all. We need to hear all our voices. Scott Petri, HS History T. #CAedchat#casocstudies.
Do you think we're doing enough in schools about drug awareness? Our Red Ribbon Week has turned into Healthy Living Week, and I think we may be trying to "G Rate" something that should be talked about more. #caedchat
A2: Though we haven't been affected by the most recent fires, but earlier this year we faced two large fires nearby. Its very important to see schools supporting their Ss during times of crisis. I also love the idea of this google doc - schools supporting other schools! #caedchat
Bonus A I think a moment like this could be very beneficial to make sure that all of your students or just your culture in general at a school is anti-bullying and positive. #caedchat
Bonus A: I saw this video earlier today, it's heartbreaking. I would use an incident like this to teach Ss empathy, compassion, and to promote a safe and accepting environment. Would also be great to do an anti-bullying activity during class. #caedchat
Bonus A: We read Wonder as a class & we specifically discuss anti-bullying strategies often during Morning Meeting and Closing Circle. I have a few targets in my class this year, and these talks have helped strengthen our class against bullying. #responsiveclassroom#caedchat
I saw this earlier & immediately bookmarked.Sharing w/ my Ss as I teach Sex Ed & relationships. One of the most frustrating parts of teaching is how do we stop this behavior in our schools. One of the downsides of tech is the anonymous bully. #caedchat
A2 My employer is usually a punching bag for the edu-reformers, but I was proud of @LASchools for closing SF Valley Schools during the fires, but keeping cafeterias open for those displaced and struggling with food scarcity. #caedchat

A3: One really great thing our schools do is make posters, even the rival schools, and bring them to the school in need with a group of students. We are one big family.
#caedchat
A3: At Chapman, often times we hold events/fundraisers to collect supplies to donate to victims. We also always keep our Interfaith Center open for students who may be affected and need a space to recuperate. #caedchat
A3 @LASchools Always reaches out with counselors immediately after any tragedy. #SEL is a big priority in #LAUSD. #CAedchat Who knew I was such a homer? Usually I am critical of the suits.
A3: One of my favorite projects was organizing a Thanksgiving food drive, gathering turkeys and fixings for over 62 families. Our kids are capable of amazing things.

We had a recent tragedy at our school. I couldn't believe the number of higher district admin and counselors who were present during the meeting at which we were informed. It reminded us that our feelings were valued. #caedchat
A4 I think through effective communication an inclusive space can be created. When you reach out to families and make sure they know that you are here to help you it can have very positive effects. #caedchat
A4: Our district as a whole has a couple of programs in place to help out neediest kids at the holidays. Our staff has been known to band together to help families in very dire straits. #caedchat
I was hesitant to share specifics, too. On one hand, it's great we share strategies,
but on the other hand, information that could identify affected families might be deemed offensive. #CAedchat#StudentPrivacy
We discuss it across grade levels. It's helpful to hear from a child's previous teacher. That teacher tends to know the family better since we're not even half into the school year. And if I know of a former student, I'll go put a bug in the ear of the current teacher. #caedchat
A5 I think that you address them with complete honesty. If you approach the subject with sensitivity and respect then they can be very good teachable moments. #caedchat
Not to mention, our community is smallish and many of us work with these kids in the community through Scouts, sports, etc. We know our families because we are part of the same community. #caedchat
Final question for the evening

Q7: People are more likely to follow through on a commitment after putting it in writing; Here’s your chance. What can you commit to do for our California education community? #caedchat

A6: In my curriculum, we have the opportunity to discuss how the actions of 1 person can affect many in U.S. History. And we frequently discuss how book characters can inspire us to effect change, as per #DisruptingThinking. It creates a culture of awareness & advocacy. #caedchat
Thank you to the few who made time to join #caedchat this evening. This time of year is hard for many students, yet they will work even harder to hide it. Be that person that somebody needs.
A7: As a new teacher mentor, I work with my credential candidates on providing the same empathy to their Ss as I do to mine. Hopefully they will pay that forward. Thank you all for the ideas and a great chat! Off to go prep lunches! #caedchat
