Q1: How do you help educate your athletes on nutrition and proper eating habits?
-
Tim Lala, DC/LB/WR, Catholic High (PC), New Roads, LA
-
A1: Mostly by talking to them and encouraging fueling their bodies the right way
-
Kendrick Crite OL/RGC at Jefferson High School in Rockford, IL
-
Athletes always ask me for diet plans, but I'm not a fan.
To hard to follow and I don't think HS athletes need to eat "Perfect"
-
Welcome coaches to another great week of . Let the chats begin!
-
A1: we have some handouts that I can provide. Other than that just word of mouth. I try to stay fit and eat right so they ask me
-
A1) I agree, just communicating with them if the question arises.
-
-
John Mitchell OL Midwest City HS Midwest City OK What it is? What it was? What it be like? What's happenin fellas!!!!!
-
A1) We discuss nutrition often. After weightroom finishers we meet as a group. Talk nutrition probably once/week
-
Most HS athletes just need to eat "Not Bad". Get a grilled chicken sandwich instead of fried. Or skip the fries!
-
A1: Try to use successful athletes as a platform. Try to stress hydration. Its hard with the way school lunches are served
-
Nick Stromeyer Former AC at Allen Academy. Aspiring college football coach once I graduate from A&M in May
-
Jason Hensley, DB's Coach, Unicoi County HS, Erwin, TN
-
I tell my athletes if they will do a 3 day food log. I will work with them over time to teach them to eat. Not Tell them.
-
A1) I start with food journals, try to keep it simple, give them easy rules and focus on protein totals, amt of sleep & h2o
-
-
A1: I just cringe when their parents load up on the dollar menu at mickey d's before a contest.
-
The big points: Eat Breakfast, Eat After you train, Eat something every 2-3 hours, and protein at every meal.
-
A1: pretty much word of at the moment. That's something I have to work at getting better at.
-
A1)I have a page in my track handbook we give out also, just guidelines on nutrition/hydration and use of supplements
-
. What do you find most high school athletes lack in their diets?
-
about hitting macros, not specific times & "meals". Most don't consume nearly enough protein & fats.
-
Something I will be trying next week is a "Virtual Shopping" Trip. I will go to the store, and point out healthy/easy snacks
-
A1:) Soda and fruit drinks kill progress. I never drank soda as an athlete. I usually illustrate a kidney stone how to pass one.
-
A1: We are in the baby steps process of better nutrition. Working on low cost ways to help put on good weight & be healthier.
-
First you should stress hydration and having a good breakfast first thing in the morning. Get the day started off right.
-
-
Please YouTube this or Periscope it! Great Idea! https://t.co/TTlpiAOdM6

-
most athletes tend to be missing out on protein. Carbs are easy to find. fruit and veggies would be next.
-
I'll be doing it from which is where i put everything i want the athletes to see!
-
Q2: When it comes to supplements what do you tell your athletes? For/Against?
-
Follow to go "shopping" with for good nutrition buys! https://t.co/iymLQRaBT0
-

-
Things I want to integrate, when I become the boss(if ever) shopping trips and cooking basics. Stay out of the center isles!
-
-
-
-
I try to educate.. Whole food is best no question. But supplements can help!
-
I coach in Alabama but enjoying this !!! Good stuff guys!
-
A2: to be careful. I always tell the story of when I was growing up taking creatine that had been mixed with CAKE BATTER
-
A2) we tell our athletes that if they eat right, they don't need supplements. Period. OK with protein powders for some.
-
A2) 1st Rule they have to ask, 2nd have to have a good diet first. Then 1st Phorm protein, ignition & creatine in that order
-
It's hard for us to preach healthy eating when the food being served in cafeteria is typically pretty bad for them
-
A2: ctd: I try to tell them that they don't need to spend a ton of money on stuff either. They don't need all that jazz
-
Protein: Whey - Preferably Whey Isolate. Personally I like Muscle Milk, Optimum Nutrition GAT VPX. Good Brands
-
A2: If a kid asks me about supplements, I will talk to them about what they are wanting to do and how they can do it naturally
-
A2) con't NO PRE-WORKOUT.....that's for old fat guys like me....
-
A2 multi vit, bcaa, omega, protein
-
Don't need SUPER GAIN 5000 with 60g of protein per scoop. A simple 20g per serving is all you need.
-
Q2 Most don't know supplements r unregulated
-
A2: Avoid diuretic products, esp on heat of summer. Avoid "energy" drinks. Do research on what ingredients are bad/good
-
A2: The only thing I would recommend is something to rehydrate them if they do get dehydrated. Such as Pedialyte
-
Creatine: I'm for it. Research shows it to be Safe, Effective, and Efficient. Most studies now look outside sports performance
-
A2 cont: I will recommend a protein supplement as long as they are consuming natural protein sources
-
Agee...I usually hype milk. Olympic lifters drink a lot of milk.
-
Creatine: Monohydrate is also all you need. Too many fancy/expensive formulas that aren't any better.
-

-
A2 Personally I'm not a fan of any sort of supplement or pre-workout. Too unregulated for my comfort
-
What sources do you turn to for research into supplements?
-
Do your research on supplements. Be smart. They can help but again make sure you are hydrating a ton if you are taking them.
-
Casein Protein - slow release for 7 hours - Best source is Big Glass of Milk 80/20 split between whey and Casein.
-
A2: Most of the supplements can be done naturally. I do tell them to take vitamin C to help with healing and the bruising
-
What are some really good off season drills WRs can do without focusing more on catches that some of you all do?
-
Multivitamin - Find a good one. Optimum Nutrition and Muscle Pharm have surprisingly good absorption rates for price.
-
A2: I think educating them on supplements is the key. Like I said before they can do it through foods.
-
A2: my trainer in HS called most of it .
-
A2: A German company makes a great pure Creatine trademarked Creapure
-
Kids are gonna look for an edge always have always will educate them on basic needs, make sure parents know what kid
-
-
Q2: Chocolate Milk and PB & J
-
A2: You don't need 1100% of anything. Too much can be a bad thing.
-
-
Pre-Workouts - Should be like a good warm-up. Just going to help you workout better.
-
-
Pre-workout: BCAAs, Beta-Alanine, and Creatine is about all you need. I buy separate and mix on my own. All are effective.
-
-
Check out classifiednutrition for a solid research based - non caffeinated pre-workout.
-
Falling behind schedule! Moving away from nutrition, or we could be here all night!
-
Another big misconception by most is that supplementation = replacement used wisely it's just another tool in the belt
-
Q3: When it comes to speed/Agility days - What do you feel like is most important, or overlooked?
-
-
athletes shouldn't be on a low carb diet if you ask me.. especially in HS. Carbs = Fuel!
-
A3) we try to balance flexibility with explosive drills, but don't do good enough job. Guys get big and tight lifting all winter
-
-
a3: recovery and overtraining most overlooked!
-
I'm a huge fan of teaching deceleration mechanics. Why spend time building horsepower, if you won't build brakes?
-
Coach I have heard of kids loading up on Stacker 2 pills.
-
A3) most of my kids have a low training age, so strength first then mobility then acceleration mechanics
-
2017 football players: plan to take the June ACT test! Best to do out of season!
-
A3: Changing direction+lowering hips+competitions = improved quickness
-
Most athletes need to learn how to absorb the force needed to come to a proper stop. It needs to be learned. Gradually.
-
A3 proper technique and footwork. Doing the little things right and not cheating yourself or being lazy through a drill
-
agree with chocolate milk and pb & j
-
A3: Agility training turning into conditioning, not enough recovery time is in my opinion what is overlooked
-
Q3: Eliminating false steps on position specific starts. Smooth, seamless starts are often overlooked.
-
A3: Quality vs Quanitity with regard to reps.
-
A1 We eat lunch together. I keep PBJ and bread in the mini fridge in my classroom so they can eat. Diet log works too.
-
Reacting is another big things for me. Agility isn't just footwork. It's seeing, processing, and making the right move.
-
Negative or positive acceleration,
-

Q3: When it comes to speed/Agility days - What do you feel like is most important, or overlooked?
-
A3) how to start and how to finish, which can encompass a lot from speed/agility to weight training
-
Speed ladders and pre-programmed cone drills don't teach you how to think and process.
-
Q2 against unless it's a multi-vitamin. Normal well rounded diet is plenty
-
Also every drill doesn't need to be "brutal" Agility =/= conditioning.
-

Speed ladders and pre-programmed cone drills don't teach you how to think and process.
-
A3: Stress hurdle drills. Working to get better at hip flexibility
-
Like throwing, catching, tackling, movement needs to be learned and corrected. Start slow - progress up.
-
A3) I stress footwork in my linemen and being fast in short distances. Football is played in a 10x10 box for the most part.
-
-
Q4: Aside from Clean, Squat, Bench - What 2 lifts (For time sake) do you find the most valuable during offseason?
-
EDD for us regardless the type of workout https://t.co/mEQjY4vXUz
-
-
A3: Stress hurdle drills. Working to get better at hip flexibility
-
Revised SAT test-- avoid this test due to unknowns. Stick with the ACT. Prep help available via Skype.🏈
-
A3 also hurdles and working on hip flexibility. As someone who's broken their hip twice, I stress how important flexibility is
-

-
Q4: Aside from Clean, Squat, Bench - What 2 lifts (For time sake) do you find the most valuable during offseason?
-
A3: Athletes can't go thru the motions during a speed drill. No wasted motion. Cant be lazy. Pet peeve. .
-
One of my favorites is what we call the RDL Shrug (Clean Pull, or Power Pull for some)
-
A3 it amazes me how many people ignore the posterior chain
-
A4: Front squat and hex-bar deadlift
-
It works the hip hinge - Loading the hips is not natural for most HS kids. Ask them to squat, and most will load knee, not hips
-
A4) Push Press and Hang Snatch ... Easy to teach and build off other core lifts...
-
A4) single leg squats and core work
-
-
A4: Jammer Press, and the RufNex Lift. Rufnex lift is a Clean, Press, Squat, Press. Its a tough lift. Mentally tough lift.
-
Got to get that explosion!
-
It also gives us the ability to train explosively like a clean - but without as much technique.. Sort of cheating the question.
-
a4: push press and kb swings. Or Anything where we can emphasize bar speed with our developed athletes.
-
A3 Open chain drills. But only in their proper order in a sound teaching progression.
-
Hips and legs and what you do with them is the most important part in the sport.
-
My other would be sled pushes. Simulates proper running form. Develops upper body strength if arms are locked out.
-
Ya'll cheating, Ha Ha Ha! No squat varieties!!!
-
Q4: Hanging Dead Lifts and anything else that promotes explosive movement.
-
A4 for time sake over head (squat/lunge) and power pulls or incorporate complexes
-
A4 Variations of all 3. PLUS the glute-ham developer and single leg squats.
-
A4: Love the Jammer Press Machine. Great for hip explosion. If i could have a 3rd would be hip sled. Anything with explosion.
-
-
Split Squat and loaded carries like Farmers Walks, both are invaluable to team sport athletes.
-
A4: We do a complex that consists of 6 hi-pulls, 6 muscle snatches, 6 squat & press, 6 SLDL, and 6 Bent-Rows
-
Pushing Sleds is also a gut check. Little to no technique. Just keep pushing.
-
A4: we do a dumbbell station! Lunges, explosion, db snatch/squat, it's all about core stability & explosion.
-
A4: Clean and Jerk, Hang Snatch.
-
Front squats, Zercher squats, split squats, split squat jumps
-
A4: If an athlete wants to get better in football. They must work their legs and hips. Period. Legs make football players.
-
Love both of those! I went with Sled Push - since it can act like a SL Squat too
-
Coach, could you clarify "Chain Drills" Please? https://t.co/FFEKV7uTFC
-
-
A3 Open chain drills. But only in their proper order in a sound teaching progression.
-
if I could add a third or 2a huge fan of single DB RDLs as well. Love working in balance and stabilization.
-
Close 3rd would be dead lift, static start, in a compressed position, sounds like something
-
A3: most overlooked IMO is do you make athletes finish... I tell them you'd finish on a TD, why not finish on an agility drill?
-
A4) I like oly lifts like snatch to build explosiveness. We also just got a 90lb atlas stone to use as a station.
-
Q5: Aside from getting Stronger and Getting Conditioned, What other training aspects do you value in offseason?
-
https://t.co/sLHzWax0lx

Q5: Aside from getting Stronger and Getting Conditioned, What other training aspects do you value in offseason?
-
-
-
A4: Be more concerned with Squat and Clean than bench.
-
Mobility and activation. 2 of the first 3 lifts we do in the weight room will be 1 of these.
-
A5: MENTAL TOUGHNESS must be developed to win big in the fall and TEAM UNITY
-
A5: if we aren't teaching kids mental toughness & discipline in the offseason we've missed the boat, those don't just happen.
-
A5: Getting your team on one goal. One heartbeat. Building a brotherhood. Building love on the team.
-
A5) leadership and team building. We look to (& teach) seniors to be leaders and get younger guys involved in TEAM
-
sorry, should've used on those videos, but you can retweet I'm sure haha
-
-
Sitting in a desk, and looking at a phone is horrible for athletes (people). It shuts off most of your backside.
-
A5 Build discipline and competition. I think offseason workouts are a great way to do that. The kids need to work hard everyday
-
We stay light with deads mostly, kids can get carried away with weight and duration of work out. Typically 2x15 at 225
-
Deadlift and overhead press
-
A5 Team building. Injury mitigation. Competition.
-
what is an example of a mobility lift?
-
This is the night that this discussion goes down... Topics change every week. 6pm your time
-
A5 1. Culture 2. Leadership. 3. Mental Toughness 4. Accountability "the intangibles" that always lead to tangible results
-
Get up and move! https://t.co/Y7wx2cmME0

A5: Character Education, building personal relationships with each other
-
A5: SPEED!!!! & more of it. Kids get stronger as they get older especially w/weight training. Speed needs 2 B developed.
-
Preach it and demand it https://t.co/upLgQ6mnY2
-
-
A5: if we aren't teaching kids mental toughness & discipline in the offseason we've missed the boat, those don't just happen.
-
A5: thousands of pulls for upper back mass neck and shoulders
-
-
-
A5) mental toughness and confidence very few of us have D1s make em think bigger and badder then John Wayne cooler
-
Something as simple as spidermans for hips. I's and Y's for shoulders.
-
-
Coach Rice, did my response post?
-
A5) I like hanging with my dudes. I want to develop them & our bond. Teach them about old school rap
-
A5: We try to develop a 1 word motto in our off-season program that will carry us through the season
-
-
-
Y,W,T,I band pulls and KB swings, have to unglue them after 8 hrs in a desk
-
Ton of Mobility/Activation exercises out there. Take away is give athletes a chance to go from sitting in a desk to lifting.
-
Speed wins championships in the fall, work it daily https://t.co/pMhSbiBZTk

Remember the goal is to build athletes. Bigger Clean Squat Bench is good. But W's on the field is what matters.
