We welcome all educators to join #AppleEDUchat every Tuesday. Our ADEs host chats from both Europe and the Americas with an incredible lineup of topics to spark conversation. Share your ideas & stories and connect with this global community. Join at 6pm PST or 9pm EST.
Hello from Maine #AppleEDUchat, thrilled to share and listen tonight as we talk #innovation underground and supporting new ideas for Ts, Ss, and As to make school more human
A1: Innovation is important in education as we are preparing our Ss for the future. They will have to innovate to be competitive in the future. #appleeduchat
A1: They say don't reinvent the wheel if it is working, but how do we not know how to make it work better if we are not finding new ways to improve upon it? Innovation is different from change as you are improving upon what is already in place and working. #appleEDUchat
Innovation is making something better because of change. Opening your mind to try new ideas allows for innovation in teaching and learning #AppleEDUChat

Innovation is huge in ed. Focus on looking at things differently, trying things to see what happens. Is an approach to risk taking we should see encouraged in all students. #AppleEDUchat
A2: Biggest difference between Innovation & Change in my eyes, is the element of certainty. In change we can predict with some certainty what may happen. Innovation is messy & often unpredictable, yet could result in a much more rewarding path! #appleeduchat
A1: innovation is Ed is important as we must change to meet the needs of our clients. Innovation is doing something better, change isn’t always a good thing. Depends on how innovative you are. #AppleEDUchat
Yes, iteration is the key. All too often in edu. we focus on change, but not on iteration. Rather reflecting after the fact whether it worked or didn't.
A1: innovation is Ed is important as we must change to meet the needs of our clients. Innovation is doing something better, change isn’t always a good thing. Depends on how innovative you are. #AppleEDUchat
A1: innovation is important because otherwise we are stagnat and do things "because it's the way we've always done it". Some of the most dangerous and expensive words in education. @Abdulchohan#appleeduchat
A1) Innovation is so important as we prepare Ss for their futures. We don’t know what that will look like. Innovation builds on while change can be done for change sake. #appleEDUchat
A1: To innovate is to think differently to devise something that hasn’t been thought of before. Dynamic. Change is constant and nuanced but can feel static. #AppleEduChat
A1: Innovation is important because we are preparing our Ss for jobs that do not yet exist. It’s our duty to question and consider - how can we best prepare them? That takes innovation. #AppleEDUChat
A2: The new school I’m joining has actually knocked down the walls in their Science dept. to promote collaboration, inquiry and PBL in an open plan wing #excited#AppleEDUChat
A2: I work in higher ed and am helping to build a collaborative degree program with three distinct campuses means we are #innovating every day - I keep my focus on #gradstudent outcomes & keeps the work positive and energizes me #AppleEDUchat
A2: I’m trying incorporatecommunity based learning opportunities, but it is a struggle from a district that thinks test scores and benchmark test are more important. #AppleEDUchat
A2 Innovating the way we support our edus with a new collaborative PLC-ish model. Just wrapped up yr 1 and looking ahead to yr 2. Biggest hurdle is making teaching transparent to peers, giving & receiving feedback. #AppleEDUChat
Not my doing, but our district has created a pathway for high school students to work in the business sectors of their choice to explore their interests and build community partnerships #appleEDUchat
Indeed, they initially had an acoustics problem and physical innovation don’t necessarily achieve the collaboration immediately but baby steps in the right direction. I’m excited to see how it will all work! #AppleEDUchat
Thinking about current practices and how might we look at serving all students. For example, next year we are taking a small group of Grade 9’s for work in core values and grad expectations. Less focus on grades #appleeduchat
A2: We are working on innovative Professional Learning #AppleEDUChat Taking a different approach to the traditional - more teacher driven & hopefully driving creativity.
A2: I'm trying to incorporate entrepreneurship ed into my class. The challenge is getting it to continue to align to the LOs while being applicable. #appleeduchat
A2) Wanted to begin a lunch time coding club & increase video production skills this year and needed to move plans to next year. Time & need changed timelines. #AppleEDUChat
A2: Helping teachers leverage technology in intentional ways to meet IEP goals- go beyond the worksheet. Scanning doesn’t make it accessible. Allow s to show what they know in a way that makes sense to them!#appleeduchat

I’m working on incorporating the coding of LEGO Mindstorms to create autonomous cars. Build a conversation about ethics in coding and understanding the impact of your code. #AppleEDUchat
We created self-paced #GoogleClassroom courses for our staff aimed at 101 application and just-in-time learning. Very little attendance from Ts so far, but those that have enrolled love the idea! #AppleEDUchat
A2: Working with fellow ADE @janeamenicucci, we planned a @breakoutEDU18 miles apart! Clues were divided between the two locations and students were paired with members not only from their own class, but their peers 18 miles away. #AppleEDUchat
A2 I’m trying to get faculty to replace expensive textbooks by building their own eTextbooks. It’s a slow and time-consuming process, but I think it’ll be worth it in the end. #AppleEDUchat
The power of the model is linking Ts from across grade levels and content areas based on personal professional goals. Sharing, collaborating, innovating, and supporting to move our teaching from theory to practice. #AppleEDUChat#CollaborativePD
A2: Trying to get Ss who would be scribed instead using dictation on an iPad to get their thoughts out (an idea I picked up at Academy last year). Problem some people like our Literacy Coach think I'm being lazy even thought it's a life skill.#AppleEDUchat
Q2: I’ve been trying to innovate new ways to bring computational thinking into the arts. It’s challenging to break down the silos between STEM and the Humanities. #AppleEduChat
Absolutely! We can even whitelist your domain in #GoogleClassroom & let you share the experience if you want to borrow anything for your district as well. #AppleEDUchat
A2: Taking a hard look at how we might do more project based learning. It’s innovative to the teachers who are trying to figure it out to make it work for kids. The obstacle is schedule and other nay sayers. #AppleEDUchat
YES - some of my greatest inspiration and support comes from Ts in elementary or MS science. its’ not about grades or content - rather the culture & philosophy and INNOVATION #AppleEDUchat
Q3 Making change and innovating can be more powerful with a tribe. Who do you lean on to support your efforts? Who else can you invite to the convo?
#AppleEDUchat
Allows for much more personalized, localized and meaningful learning material to reference going forward. Yes time consuming, but ultimately a time saver #AppleEDUchat
Q2: I’ve been trying to innovate new ways to bring computational thinking into the arts. It’s challenging to break down the silos between STEM and the Humanities. #AppleEduChat
Oh no... no.... no.... I understand this completely! I always ask- is this an exercise or compliance or an exercise for the learner to show what they know? #AppleEduChat
This has been a tough idea to swallow for just a few. Glad to see most welcoming the professional connections with peers at different grade levels and content areas. We can learn a great deal from those with a different point of view. #appleEDUchat
I lean on you all #AppleEDUchat and local experts in my board. Talking to friends in relevant industries and can’t ever forget a good google search! The twitterverse is the single greatest asset though #AppleEDUchat
A1 It is through innovation that we brindge the gap between now and the future. Changing the world requires a leap in practices. Change is a different way of doing, Inovation is a different way of being. #AppleEDUchat@AppleEDU
A3: I lean on my admin for support of new ideas, but even more so my fellow innovative Ts like @mr_pjordan and @ashhrossi.
I know when I need to bounce a new idea off someone, I have them! We try to bring in our new Ts each year to keep the cycle going. #appleeduchat
Several have said they prefer the pbl and pretty much all of them (and Ss that aren’t mine) prefer the standards based. Almost all other Ts are traditional. #AppleEDUchat
A3: I lean on my #ADE tribe at #AppleEDUchat for support and inspiration!! At school it’s important to bring departmental colleagues into the conversation and offer PD to support the innovation #AppleEDUChat
A1: Innovation in education is important because skill sets are evolving in the 21st century & we must prepare our Ss for the advances in our global society.
Innovation can help take education to higher levels & infuse more differentiated learning opportunities #AppleEDUchat
My Twitter PLN and ADE community has been my biggest influence in inspiring me. My first #ISTE conference 9 years ago is where it all began. 👍🏻 #AppleEDUChat#alwayslearning
A3: We have a lot of support from other schools that we have gone to visit. Then there’s Twitter! Now the work is to build up in school support. That will take some time. But al least it’s on the radar. #AppleEDUchat
Q3 Making change and innovating can be more powerful with a tribe. Who do you lean on to support your efforts? Who else can you invite to the convo?
#AppleEDUchat
Yes yes yes! I think it is critical to continue to grow your tribe! We had some turnover last year and I was so lucky that I still had a great tribe at my school. #AppleEduChat
A3 I count on my teammates to give immediate feedback and lean on my #PLN for inspiration. Ss also have a part to play in helping us innovate. #AppleEDUchat#PLNpower

A2: My big (or small) challenge would be to get more Filipino teachers active on Twitter and share resources/knowledge/experiences. #AppleEDUchat#edchatph
A3: Lots of support from ADEs for innovative ideas & encouragement and inspiration to try. #AppleEDUChat As teachers, our tribes are all teachers & students - we all can create!
A3: we rely on #AppleEDUchat, @pbsteachers, @thehenryford and of course each other and our students are a huge source of innovation. It is through them that we have built upon the best ideas.
A3: continued - need to invite and always think about how to include #student voice, it can be a vulnerable moment to share and listen with your #learners#AppleEDUchat
It is so invigorating to work with people you respect and keep you growing, that question but support, offer suggestions and jump in when things get messy #AppleEDUchat#edtech207#207strong
In reply to
@johannaprince, @MeredithSwallow, @marycallan1086
A1 #AppleEDUchat Innovation is doing new things to making education better not just doing new things for the sake of doing them. @gcouros is the man in this field
A2: My big (or small) challenge would be to get more Filipino teachers active on Twitter and share resources/knowledge/experiences. #AppleEDUchat#edchatph
A1: Innovation and change can certainly be confusing, both can be messy and both can have an impact. In education, we see change all the time, but innovation is where the real transformation occurs. #AppleEDUChat
Well said. That moment of vulnerability is powerful. We are opening ourselves to new learning and we model the desire to learn for our Ss. Also share responsibility for learning with our Ss. #AppleEDUChat#StuVoice
Yes yes yes! I think it is critical to continue to grow your tribe! We had some turnover last year and I was so lucky that I still had a great tribe at my school. #AppleEduChat
A2 Biggest challenge would be the acquisition of iPads for teaching and learning - bringing these to those who can’t afford or have no access to such materials especially the remote schools in PH. #BackpackClassroom#AppleEDUchat
Well said. That moment of vulnerability is powerful. We are opening ourselves to new learning and we model the desire to learn for our Ss. Also share responsibility for learning with our Ss. #AppleEDUChat#StuVoice
Yes, and when my Ss are practicing educators I have SO much to learn from and with them! #AppleEDUchat would imagine in your role you deal with the vulnerability piece with faculty as well?
Well said. That moment of vulnerability is powerful. We are opening ourselves to new learning and we model the desire to learn for our Ss. Also share responsibility for learning with our Ss. #AppleEDUChat#StuVoice

A3: I have a few close coworkers to ping ideas off of and my TA. As I'm the one on staff that tends to "push the element" it is hard to get anyone other than my online PLN & #ADE tribe to invite to the convo. #AppleEDUchat
I tried doing an experiment on PLN (via Twitter) about 5 years ago and I was not able to gather data that much from the local educators, perhaps too much Facebook activity still just like now. #AppleEDUchat#edchat#edchatph
A4: I'm all about the numbers. When I try to get buy in, I like to have the data to support why my idea is important. When we launched our CS program at my school I was able to get buy in easily because it was supported by research #AppleEduChat
A4 partner with them on small scale changes -- let them witness the power; when we earn trust of the reluctant, we are more likely to experience lasting innovation #appleeduchat
A4) Young adults usually are the ones motivating staff to step out of their comfort zones. They are wonderful advocates for innovation & creativity. Want to expand their support next year too. #AppleEDUchat
A3: Lots of support from ADEs for innovative ideas & encouragement and inspiration to try. #AppleEDUChat As teachers, our tribes are all teachers & students - we all can create!
A4 I think it is best to start with the good things they are already doing and then show them how they can be improved. Build on strength. #AppleEDUchat
Jazzed at those moments when a peer reaches out to learn something new from a colleague. The opportunities to show vulnerability has increased with the implementation of our "Family" model for PD support. #AppleEDUchat
A1 It is through innovation that we bridge the gap between now and the future. Changing the world requires a leap in practice. Change is a different way of doing, Inovation is a different way of being. #AppleEDUchat@AppleEDU
Modeling and always being open to sharing and helping - supporting whenever possible. Starting small and praising their courage. Best when you can point to specific student feedback and passion. #AppleEDUchat
I like numbers though sometimes an innovation doesn't have quantitative measures behind it -- what we can observe is often difficult to measure objectively; should we wait? #appleeduchat
A4: It’s all about establishing relationships and trust and also about being transparent. What’s your why and how do you communicate it to others? #Appleeduchat
A4 This is the million dollar question. I’ve always found providing examples where other institutions made similar changes helps. Also, having multiple individual conversations with stakeholders and showing them how their situations could improve can be effective. #AppleEDUchat
A2 Working on bringing heavy-hitting @shortyawards-style social good campaigns into the classroom — some of the topics that kids are bringing are really powerful and compelling, but push deep into controversial territory! Going to have to tread lightly! #AppleEDUChat
A4: Seems to help if you can gain a lot of input from stakeholders first, gather ideas especially from Ss, & come up with a plan or prototype to solve a problem. This tends to get people onboard the bus hoping for positive change and potentially innovation. #AppleEDUchat
Q4: allow them a safe space to try and start small. We invite those who are curious to join our videoconferencing and witness or try out the methods and tools from the safety of thier own room-computer- camera. #AppleEDUchat
A4: Slowly. I have found throwing down all the info or idea all at once makes people scared and back out immediately. Giving out small bits of what is being changed helps. Change is scary. The more friendlier it is approached the more you'll keep on board. #AppleEDUchat
A4 Demonstrate how innovation will positively impact S learning. Document S growth, open classroom doors for demo lessons and casual check ins, share conference notes to spark conversations. #AppleEDUchat
A4: I think empathy and building connections is important, and recognizing that change can take people outside of their comfort zones. Working alongside teachers and knowing we’re in it together is key. Small steps. Just move forward. 👏🏻 #appleEDUchat
Absolutely. More than anything though, positive modeling is huge. Never implying that “failure” to follow translates to poor teaching. Simply sharing possibilities, being open to sharing success as well as failure #AppleEDUchat
A4: Instead of trying to “convince” people of change, engage all stakeholders in the conversation from the start. Let the change/Innovation reflect multiple voices to ensure its reliability. Then stick with it and see it to the end. #AppleEduChat
There are few better than @WickedDecent at sharing his passion and energy in a way that garners trust and respect. He is the pied piper. #Whimsy#AppleEDUChat
A4 partner with them on small scale changes -- let them witness the power; when we earn trust of the reluctant, we are more likely to experience lasting innovation #appleeduchat
I think examples of innovation may help. Take Dyson for instance. It certainly wasn't the first couple of models that finally became the famous vacuum cleaner that has become his signature now. #AppleEDUchat
A4: that is the million dollar question. But I think the best way is to lead by example and be open to helping. Just giving a teacher an iPad does not mean they will change. #AppleEDUchat
It is an area where we could use some growth for sure. We do a lot of pre and post surveys when we try something new to try to collect data. We also interview students and parents after innovative experiences. #AppleEduChat
A4 I think if you want teachers to be innovative, you need to give them time to learn and explore and plan. Too often we ask teachers to implement huge time consuming changes, but give no space to make it happen.
A4 You can’t convince people without showing what that change can be. People need to believe in possibilities but that means that they need to experience them. Without experience there is no belief thus no change #AppleEDUchat
A3 PLN has been huge for sure — also started reaching out to industry partners and college admissions reps, this has really helped amplify my perspective on what our kids need to be successful. #AppleEDUChat
A5: Keep trying. If it didn't work the first time there is always a Plan B, C, D, to Z. Also look and see how others may have attacked it or reach out to PLNs and see if they have ideas. #appleEDUchat
A5) When possible, young adults will problem solve obstacles. They learn how to respect all opinions, negotiate & are committed to the outcome. #AppleEDUchat
A5: This book changed the way I approach #innovation - A More Beautiful Question by @GlimmerGuy and realized that it is not about knowing, it is about asking the right questions to spark innovation #AppleEDUchat
A4 #AppleEDUchat getting the kids on board first is also a good strategy. We have had students (complain) ask their tchrs why they are not using Google docs and why they are sending Word documents and not sharing Gdocs. If the kids pester the teachers enough they can change
A5: We've been inspired by the #MakerMindset & developed #MakerSpaces within our elementary schools. It's been a slow process, but certainly worthwhile in these areas. Ts & Ss get messy, fail, iteratie, fail again, but learn about true grit & reworking a prototype. #AppleEDUchat
A5: Creativity and resilience. We have to model overcoming obstacles for our students. Come up with a new way to solve the problem. I think this frequently means starting small. #AppleEduChat
A5 persistence, patience & a pinch of positivity 😊 I have learned that obstacles are just problems to solve. Stick with it if it’s important! #appleEDUchat
A5: if you want to innovate you can find a way to make it happen, whether it be going to yard sales, signing up for donorschoose, and my favorite: beg borrow and steal. #AppleEDUchat
A5 A wise person told me that you can't change the system but you can create change within it. The obstacles may seem insurmountable but by doing the things that we know are right, regardless, we create space for others to see it too. I tend to focus on that #AppleEDUchat
Being willing to adjust makes innovation possible. Risk is inevitable in innovation, A growth mindset makes it possible to turn a opps into an Ahhh! #AppleEDUchat
By persevering despite naysayers, being passionate and never taking no for an answer. Pursuing what you’re passionate about. Adapt, incorporate. Be the pirate and ask forgiveness after #AppleEDUchat
A5: We work very hard in the beginning of the year to make sure this is known throughout our classrooms and in our professional learning communities. Constant modeling and reiteration of this works! #AppleEDUChat
A5 Know your outcomes and know your Ss. By keeping those two things in mind obstacles can be minimized. There will be flops but those become opportunities to create something that fits wonderfully. #AppleEDUChat
I agree! You have to have a #GrowthMindset in education. I do believe though at times we have to rip everything we know down & start fresh in order to truly innovate. #AppleEDUchat
All teachers are placed in a box ... "thinking outside the box" is a catch phrase that is not reality ... what is magical is that teachers can still do awesome things from inside the box. #AppleEDUchat
A5 If you can’t make innovation happen on a large scale, maybe try it first on a smaller scale involving a group who supports your efforts. This way you'll have something to show if you achieve positive results and can make an argument to take the next step. #AppleEDUchat
A5: By not focusing just on the obstacle. Obstacles are symptoms of the state of the school/community as a system. Often need to target attention further upstream to alleviate the blockage.
#AppleEDUchat
So agree. It is especially difficult for Ts who are doing good to see that they can go to the next level and do even better or great. Relationships and modeling is the only thing I have found to work. #AppleEDUchat
Indeed. Some of my best work happened when no one was looking. The kids told the story and their work stood to help others see what could be different #AppleEDUchat
Forgot that one! Ss are so much more organized when they are presenting to a authentic audiences, like teachers & administrators. They take such pride in advocating no matter the outcome! #AppleEDUchat
Huge challenge! Especially when established educators are resistant. I’ve found that allowing others to take ownership of components of the change can help get them invested in the bigger picture — the stakes have to be elevated sometimes to get people to move. #AppleEDUChat
indeed. i’ve tried doing one - have Ss organize their own international webinars in groups. such activity can develop their presentation and event planning skills. it worked, true story btw. check out #EDUC190 and #learn365ph hashtags #AppleEDUchat
A6 Honestly, l look to the innovative work within industries and then think about how to bring that to my school district in some capacity. That means connecting beyond education and twitter has been great for this. #AppleEDUchat
A6 Inspiration for innovation comes from many places. EdCamps, conferences, conversations with Ss and colleagues, S play, daydreaming, great twitter chats, and super books. #edcampsrock@IntentionBook#AppleEDUchat#dtk12chat
A6: When I really need a Ra-Ra speech on innovation, I just watch a video from the #MoonshotFactory team at GoogleX. That always seems to help! #appleeduchat
A6: I listen to things like How I Built this and try to look outside of education for ideas. Also Edcamps, Google Innovators and Twitter. #AppleEDUchat
A6 I have to come back to Twitter for this answer. The number of new and great ideas I come across on here on a regular basis is astounding. Conferences are also a great source for inspiration. #AppleEDUchat
A6: Read compulsively and look for wisdom from folks like @BreneBrown who reminds me that we have to show up to make change and @simonsinek@cduhigg who help me think about HOW to innovate #AppleEDUchat
I come back to this chat, twitter in general. The number of times that my mind has been blown by the incredible things I come across on here are too many to count #AppleEDUchat
