Hey everyone! Alyse, 6-12 prn in Northeast Ohio, so excited to be with you tonight! GIF game is coming strong, love to be entertained while I learn! #ohedchat
Good Eveing #ohedchat! Katrice from Cincinnati. Gifted Coordinator & Consultant. Which at this time of the year feels a bit like this! Can anyone relate!?
Good Evening #ohedchat I want to continue to level up with each of you tonight. @AlyseConsiglio already has me off to a great start with her #AspiringLeaders webinar she hosted tonight. Thank you @jodiepierpoint for creating this platform.
A1) Coaching- volleyball coach for 14 yrs, started up this club season coaching my daughter. Good coaching inherently teaches what you need as an educator: Relationships! Differentiation! Mastery of skill! Passion for content! Time management! Parent communication! #ohedchat
Welcome, Melissa! I've been thinking lots about the Blue Streaks this week. Great to see you--here's to a strong finish and an exciting transition ahead! #ohedchat
A1: Being a student made me want to be a teacher.... being a student also opens my eyes to what I do/don’t want to do.... I love being a student! #ohedchat
A1: My years working in retail and fast food--experiences in dealing with difficult people or situations helped me learn patience and diplomacy. #ohedchat
A1: teaching tennis has prepared me for my role. Before edu, I taught tennis where I had to learn to be creative with lessons, think on the fly, and helping people grow as tennis players - especially the mental side of the game. #ohedchat
#ohedchat A1: Restaurant work. You have a plan...but you are required to listen and respond. You have to work as a team: anyone's job is EVERYONE'S job.
And it is always about SERVING people.
A1 coaching HS swimming and baseball, being involved in HS ministry while I was in college. Learned how to build relationships. Kids didn’t care I was a coach until after they got to know me #ohedchat
A1: coaching! I love the connections and bonds that I have been able to form. Teaches you truly work with different personalities and develop skills.
#ohedchat
A1-I loved working in a child care center in college-I worked with babies and toddlers and learned so much about the importance of purposeful play at young ages #ohedchat
A1: Theatre stage manager -- I learned so many skills that have helped me in many jobs! How to deal w/all types of people, keep things running on time, organize a team..... #ohedchat
A1: I worked in an ER in college (education wasn't my primary career goal at the time 😬). It really helped me to work with a variety people like staff, patients, and family members #ohedchat
A1 My dad made me work in a factory one summer doing piece work.
I appreciated my education so much more after that.
To be an educator is a privilege I take very seriously.
Also, being a dad helped me be a better teacher.
#ohedchat
#ohedchat A1b: Acting. You have a plan but you also have to flexible, listen, and respond when things go wrong. But mostly because everyone there WANTS YOU TO SUCCEED. If you're not succeeding....you have to ask the mirror "why not?"
A1. Two big things, the first being a crew member & manager at a Mcds for 9 years (started young!) so many parallels to classroom management and serving as a worship director, working and serving along some terrific leaders and creative individuals! #ohedchat
A1) Honestly, it was the two job where I knew I was not using my talents and gifts to serve others and even the employers and team leads called me out about it.
Outside of that a #SummerCampCounselor@MarquetteEOP program #ohedchat@MarquetteU
A1: Robin - IL, being a mom by far has been the best role outside of education that has prepared me for being an educator. Nurturing, empathetic, caring are mom qualities and helped me as an educator. #ohedchat
A1: A1: Working in the service/restaurant industry! Customers and students & families can easily be exchanged in scenarios that focus on needs, wants, & the the principles of great “customer service”! #ohedchat
Learning the importance of serving others and finding the joy in it is so important for educators. Sometimes I find that new teachers going into education don't see the profession that way #ohedchat
A1) Honestly, it was the two job where I knew I was not using my talents and gifts to serve others and even the employers and team leads called me out about it.
Outside of that a #SummerCampCounselor@MarquetteEOP program #ohedchat@MarquetteU
A2) I donated blood the 1st time this year at school. Hour later, my secretary is taking my BP as I lay on my office floor & calling my husband to come pick me up. I know I don't do NEAR enough to show my gratitude for the ways she gets me through the day & year! #ohedchat
#ohedchat A2: This year Heidi made us banana bread, did extra cleanings when kids were sick, and personalized the approach to each room. Our students are making "Star Wars" cubes using our 3D printer and laser cutter for her kids.
My custodian remembers EVERYTHING--it's amazing-he know when meetings are sets up extra chairs without being asked, he goes above to remember things so I don't have to #ohedchat Talk about love, serve, care!
a1) Also, camp counselor! Being a counselor prepared me to teach. As a principal, I always urged teachers who had "camp counselor" on their resume to bring that spirit to the classroom. #ohedchat
A2: The custodian at my school was the heartbeat of our school for years before retiring. Knew every kid by name and gave each one a nickname.
On his last day we had him walk around to each room for a special “thank you” presentation. Then a schoolwide clap-out. #ohedchat
A2: I love our custodians and honestly I enjoy our afternoon chats when everyone else is gone. We talk about everything. I tell him that I appreciate him every day, I call him sir, and we try to leave him a special treat every now & then to show our gratitude.
#ohedchat
A2. the one that sticks out the most was this year, my first in a new district, our secretaries made my fam & I feel beyond welcome the first time we came by the school, I don’t do a good enough job thanking these individuals and will make that a goal for the future! #ohedchat
A2: jumping in late! There are SO many people. Custodians, admin assistants, but I’m biased: HUGE shout out to paraprofessionals. They are so essential to the daily lives of so many! #ohedchat
A2: I work with so many amazing schools now that have awesome secretaries and custodians, but I must give thanks to THE first in my career. Sue DeRose & Lee Arnold...many thanks to you! @wcsdistrict@WESOwls#ohedchat
A2 School would come to a grinding halt without keen administrative assistants who are the gatekeepers for so much at school. They are our best friends, voices of reason, and the face of loyalty.
#ohedchat
A2. My custodian and secretary will take my students and show them how she works what she does and allows them to assist her if they wish too. #ohedchat
I had this box of tissues in my office-after about 3 mo I realized that I had never had to replace the box&couldn't figure how it wasn't empty-then one day I caught my secretary refilling it with tissues! She didn't want me throw the box away b/c it matched the decor! #ohedchat
A2: Bldg. Engineer is responsive when I have a request. Secretary is patient & answers my questions...never too busy! Unsung hero’s of the building! @kador308@FC_AmyB#ohedchat
A1 - I worked as a child care worker for Children’s Services in a group home for a couple years. The kids under my care were neglected, dependent, abused children. Helped me to understand some of the tragic home situations our students come from. #ohedchat
Q2:I taught kindergarten for 12 years...the things that our poor custodians had to clean up😳 Besides treats, cards, and lots of goodies,I think the best thing that I give all people is respect.Their job is just as important than mine,I make sure the kids know that, too. #ohedchat
Vicki and Joe are the #lifeline of our school. They have modeled excellence day in and day out to create an environment that is best for #ALL students. I can not even begin to count the ways. #PumasRoar#ohedchat
A2: I couldn't stand the blue-white fluorescent lights the district was switching to. Our head custodian knew they gave me headaches, so he saved the more yellow-golden bulbs for my classroom. #ohedchat
So funny! And she cleans my phone, door knobs and computer with alcohol AND she fills my essential oil diffuser with different oils depending on what's going on at school! #ohedchat#imspoiled
A2 great question! There are way too many items to list that custodians and secretaries do in our schools. Our custodian is working with a group of us to move our school to no waste. He goes above and beyond everyday. #ohedchat@mariemontelementary
A3) "You wont get a job as a HS principal. No one wants a woman doing discipline, & look at you-Ss won't take you seriously"
To me, that meant "You will have to be SO good that no one can use those flimsy excuses against you". So, I work harder and smarter #nonstop#ohedchat
A3: I applied for a job, I did not get the job, and the interviewer gave me an opportunity to come in to go over my interview. Hardest thing I’ve ever done...BEST THING I EVER DID! Out of my comfort zone...took me to the next level! #ohedchat
A3: In my 1st year teaching, my Ass't Principal told me that I needed to make a conscious effort to get to know my students better outside of class. By taking interest in the sports they play or activities they're involved in, I make better connections with the kids #ohedchat
A3: being a school administrator is about being able to strike a balance between the staff and students. Supporting staff so they can do their job and help students feel welcome.
#ohedchat
A3: a student onc said “why are we doing this. It doesn’t help me and I don’t learn anything from it” - changed my whole perspective and made me more reflective. #ohedchat
A3 best criticism came from my students at the end of my first year. Do more than quizzes and tests, get away from just notes and lecture. Forced me to get uncomfortable. #ohedchat
A3: “Stop trying to reinvent the wheel.”
Also, learning to “fail forward.” Communicate your flaws, ask for help, make changes. Use your weaknesses as a reason to collaborate more and grow!
#ohedchat
#ohedchat A3: 6yrs ago, I had a really good kid's dad tell me...after kid got a C..."he just didn't feel like you 'got' him as a person." I had all the bells/whistles. The "machine" was good. But that's when it began to sink in that relationships matter.
It was so hard to hear I was not selected...I took the feedback and reflected on how I could be “the best version of myself!” Since I am a “work in progress” I am constantly evolving...its never done! #ohedchat
A3: “Stop trying to reinvent the wheel.”
Also, learning to “fail forward.” Communicate your flaws, ask for help, make changes. Use your weaknesses as a reason to collaborate more and grow!
#ohedchat
A3 I was questioned on the purpose of the lesson & what my desired outcome of the learning was. I take that to heart every day! Those critical questions were impactful & should be for all educators! #ohedchat
A4) As a science teacher, washing glassware, left sink stopped & water running. Left room for something & came back...after lunch...to an inch of water on my classroom floor. Sometimes I multitask too much! Need to focus on the task at hand! #ohedchat
A1: Beinf a Mom helps prepare me as a!n educator. I put my Mom hat on and think... what if he/she was my child? Gives me perspective and helps frame the way I talk to parents. Also gives me “street cred” cause I know their role. #ohedchat
LOL, I think every year can be THE most humbling, based on class dynamics, district initiatives, new babies in your own family, new principal, parents, etc..... #ohedchat
#ohedchat A4: First years I tried standards-based-grading. Without really selling the "why," Ss were confused and afraid of this "different" approach. It wasn't obvious to them. I had to much pre-educating.
A4: too many to list...but each has caused me to reflect and realize where I can improve. Each situation is a moment of growth...and I’m thankful for them. #ohedchat
True---I guess for me the first year made me realize I had NO idea what I was doing and then after that I came to terms with not knowing!! LOL #ohedchat
A4: I'm teaching 3 new classes this year that I've never taught before. Needless to say, the mistakes I've made have been in the hundreds. This week. And its only Wednesday. #ohedchat
A4: In my first year of teaching, I fully intended to write every piece I assigned my students alongside them. Great thinking . . . until the reality of three preps and keeping up with it all hit me. #ohedchat
I say this all the time when my first few years of students reminisce... But I think you almost have to go through that phase if you are young and have older kids. 23 year olds aren't prepared mentally for that separation in general #ohedchat
A4: my first year teaching social studies I had it in my mind I was going to grade everything and my lessons would be so great that classroom manage my would be taken care of. Boy was I wrong. Now I grade less, have more conversations and reflections with Ss. #ohedchat
A4: I am a TA, so I do Recess & Lunch Duties. I am always tweaking my process, to improve. We use @PlayworksIL for Recess w/Ss. Some days are phenomenal & other days...I wonder what I am doing?! I learn that I never stop learning or trying. #ohedchat
A4 For me, I thought or dreamed that I would initiate new technology to use in class & within 5 minutes we would all be solving world peace without any connection issues, problems navigating the new site, or difficulties using the tech in general. #ohedchat#IWasWrong
Once I took a stack of papers that was a week overdue from being graded and just tossed them. Real eye opener for me on how important that lesson was. #ohedchat#funnynotfunny
A4: my first yr I tried a reading time with juniors and seniors they fought that so I went to group story time the next day. About 10 minutes in..and it bombing. I said this was a horrible idea and we went into the lesson for the day.
#ohedchat
A5) Do I have to pick just one? As a coach, teacher, and principal Mike Chaffee (@chafvb) has given me the most truths in education, taught me to be a dragon-slayer, and made me laugh every step of the way. He tops the list for sure! #ohedchat
A4.2: my favorite was when a lesson I planned for my college observation went horribly wrong...had a long discipline discussion with the class instead. Supervisor said “you did what had to be done!”...he understood and supported me. #ohedchat
A4: Every idea I’ve ever had for lunch duty thinking it would make for a smooth, easy day.
I learned it will never be smooth, yet I will survive. We all will. Deep breath. 🙂
#ohedchat
Q5: @Jacki_prati, do I have to pick ONLY one???? So hard! Probably the mentor I had for my first year. She served that role all three years I taught in that building and was so gently honest with me. She helped me grow tremendously. #ohedchat

A5: Best Mentor - @lrcthies is my Thought Partner, Mentor who inspires me with her “out of the box” thinking, which is the area out of everyone’s comfort zone! It has helped stretch/challenge me & I am grateful! #ohedchat
A5: Tim Hunt. Not my assigned mentor (also great) but teacher across the hall, same age, but in classroom longer. We are great friends & he was honest, open, & always about helping me get better. Awesome guy to have in my corner! #ohedchat
A5: my high school teacher who became a principal I worked under...Mr. Ertle...he knows how to build relationships, support, care, and serve others. A true mentor! #ohedchat
#ohedchat A5 in terms of EDU (non parents/thesis advisers, etc.) a colleague who has since retired. During my first 2 years she supported and promoted me becoming dept chair and calming my nerves as a new, alternative res ed T
Q5 part 2: But I just can't leave it at one. My gifted coordinator @theJoySama has been a tremendous mentor to me as well. She shared, encouraged, nudged, prodded, reflected. Helped me refine my practice and grow. #ohedchat
Q5: Yikes! This is the toughest one yet. I work with so many amazing teachers and admins (past and present) I can't pick just one. I try to learn something from everyone I encounter #ohedchat
A5 one of them is a guy who doesn’t know he’s a mentor in a bible study. Second is @seanmarshall9 he makes me think through the details that I wouldn’t think of #ohedchat
#ohedchat A5: No-nonsense headmaster Ted O'Connor. Coaches Jim Walker and Luke Houdek. All kindly held high standards and focused on the person's character and journey.
A5 one of them is a guy who doesn’t know he’s a mentor in a bible study. Second is @seanmarshall9 he makes me think through the details that I wouldn’t think of #ohedchat
#ohedchat a5.2 I will give a shout out to @bobby__dodd for sucking me into #ohedchat. When I need an unbiased, educated opinion, I know I can count on his wisdom. Or maybe it's the accent. He is still from Ohio right?
A5) My undergraduate program coordinator.
One semester she made me redo a final paper until it was the best it could be. She explained I had passed but gave me a chance to do better. She helped me see how I could reach my potential. She’s still my mentor, and friend.
#ohedchat
A5 my first mentor was James Thomas - a principal, then superintendent, then college professor, but always a friend who always challenged me to be the best. Now it is the team I work with at @mariemontelementary#ohedchat
A5: best mentor @ASchirg. Gave me insight and skill set to develop alternative programs. If I ever need anything he's a text, call, or email away. He is a great resource and truly passionate educator that I'm lucky to also call a friend.
#ohedchat
A5: best mentors - @Schultz_NR for guiding me through RESA, Former tennis coach Brett for giving me a chance to teach tennis and teaching me tennis, and @joyalbi for teaching me how to respect others, handle situations gracefully, and coach a tennis team! #ohedchat
A6) Opening the Think Lab! Creating Genius Hour and Entrepreneurship classes! I love seeing the creativity of Ss and watching Ts grow professionally as they teach new classes out of their comfort zone. Looking at expanding in 18-19, #hatchorgobad#ohedchat
A6: my best memory from this year is getting the job of my dreams after having the job of my dreams! I will treasure how much I’ve learned this year in my new role and work on reaching even more people next year! #ohedchat
A6 it hasn’t happened yet. The seniors graduating this year were 8th graders my first year teaching. Seeing them walk is gonna make me want to continue to grow as an educator. #ohedchat
A6: learning through many challenges...reflecting on downfalls, yet growing because of them. I know where I can improve and I know I will enter into next school year even stronger and better for my school community. #ohedchat
#ohedchat A6 seeing the reflection video ss made about a field experience digging dinos over the summer. I want to continue to create meaningful learning experiences for students that they can reflect on and report to their peers
A6. Again, hard to choose. Maybe my first day, seeing as how it was my first at Circleville. Incredible district, PHENOMENAL colleagues, fantastic students! #ohedchat
A6) Wow.
Watching a new student, entering a new country, speaking a new language (& becoming fluent), with a new wheelchair, go to school for the first time, learn and make friends and thrive.
He has shown me resiliency, determination, hard work, and much more.
#ohedchat
A5: My best mentor reminded me often that no one loves their job every day, but as a teacher you will at least love your job most days. We all go through rough patches, but knowing and expecting better days will come can be a self-fulfilling prophecy. #ohedchat
A6: Having a amazing group of juniors to teach a brand-new course (shout out STEM BioMed 11!). They really taught me how to roll with the punches, think on my feet, and change lesson plans on the fly! #ohedchat
A6: best memories from this year: Oreos and legos, Ss blogging from different perspectives to experience history, dressing up like a crazy person (guest speaker days), and transforming my room. #ohedchat
A6: Best memory..Our Principal who had been @ our building for 10+yrs., rec’d a promotion. Change was on the horizon, our new Principal was our AP 15 yrs., ago, welcoming a friend home! Realizing “Everything will be ok” feeling. #ohedchat
A6.2: also, taking the opportunity to present at a national convention, NCEA 2018! Never thought I’d be up on stage sharing my experience of teaching! It was an honor and blessing! #ohedchat
A6: working w/a team of passionate edus to rebrand the schools image &bring a level of commitment that is changing education for many kids. For me the biggest lesson is to believe in the process. Rome wasn't built in a day but be reflective cuz that keeps u on target.
