Hi, my name is Katie and I’m an author, educational consultant and Coordinator of Learning. I like Tessa and Scott (figure skating), the Sask Roughriders (CFL) & the Canadiens. #formativechat
A1: That it is separate from teaching and learning, that students won’t do it if it’s not graded, that it is time consuming, that it is optional. #formativechat
A1 that FA has to be something I recorded in my grade book and not for the advancement of Ss learning which is its main purpose #whitmanwtps#formativechat
A1: I think some of the biggest misconceptions are that formatives are just brief snapshots. They are so much more to that and provide a teacher with a deeper understanding of his/her students. #formativechat
A1: Agreed. FA does not have to be graded and it can be revisited. I think with “assessment” attached to its title, it’s misleading at times. #formativechat
A1 people think that certain only certain types of assessments are formative and types are summative. Any assessment can be formative it’s all how you use the results to drive instruction #formativechat
A1: That it is separate from teaching and learning, that students won’t do it if it’s not graded, that it is time consuming, that it is optional. #formativechat
A1 - Teachers are already doing FA but don't put as much emphasis on it because of grades/SA. That it takes too much time. That kids have been trained to only take SA seriously. #formativechat
A1: you have to do something with the information you collect - how does it inform instruction and how does it impact student learning? What is the role of self and peer assessment for FA? #formativechat
A1: I would add that some teachers think they have to own all assessment but students need to be part of formative assessment and how it plays out in the next learning experience. #formativechat
Ss don’t realize it at first either. They soon see growth once you do several FAs around the same skills. FA begins to be the norm for them. #formativechat
A1 people think that there are only certain kinds of assessments that can be formative. Formative assessment is about how you use the results to drive instruction. If you use results to give grades it’s not formative it’s summative #formativechat
Yes, often thought of something that has a specific number of Qs or a format, and it doesnt need to be this at all, observations, quick chat #formativechat
No worries. Here are the questions https://t.co/PGIClpdo22 answer how you see fit or just comment on others or retweet ones you like add #formativechat it goes by quickly so have fun an app like #tweetdeck my help you organize

A1: another misconception is that nothing has to be done with the evidence collected. If not for quality evidence, then why even do #formative assessment?#formativechat
A2: I have utilized plickers and nearpod for formative assessments. My CT that I had last semester @MandyStalets helped me gain a better understanding, and she is someone you should follow if you have not already done so. She is amazing! #formativechat
A2: Books, Books, Books and then trial and error. My biggest teachers are students and personal reflection on my own practices and the impacts on learners. Plus you can’t beat a good debate with colleagues. #formativechat
A2 Being constantly reminded that learning is not a destination but a journey. Formative assessments are the way-posts along the path to direct your travel #formativechat
A2 Pophams book, Classroom Assessment: What Teachers Need to Know & Inside the Black Box by Black and Williams are hands down the besr resources to support using FA. You can’t read these and not see the power FA has on instruction #formativechat
Love @padlet so many different ways to use it for assessments, collaboration, #pbl digital portfolios, communication w/other classrooms, and more #formativechat
A2 Google classroom is great for giving fast feedback to Ss in private comments. Read this in Teaching Math with Google Apps by @alicekeeler#formativechat

I agree/disagree to some extent here. My Ss appreciate that all of the main FAs are in @goformative because they often revisit them to study from. They know where to look. #formativechat

A2: we all know technology can support FA. But the tool isn’t the focus. You need to have thought of and planned leading up to the the assessment #formativechat
A2: #formativechat The different twitter chats that I have been a part of all tend to address FAs at some point. Have been challenged to go outside my comfort zone at times.
A3 FA is how we can understand the Ss progress, interests and open up conversations w/them to improve and how we can become better as well, #formativechat
A3: I am thankful that FA continually evolves from year to year with different resources, app smashes, and avenues to take to access Ss true understanding. #formativechat

I am reading about the use of tech tools - they may engage Ss but we have to keep the goal in mind - to collect data to inform our instruction moving forward. #formativechat
Absolutely. I have about 5, but my Ss tend to prefer just one. They have actually ASKED me to make an FA, because they want to see what they don't know. #formativechat

We can't use tech for tech's sake - must always be in the interest of student learning! Hard to remember as a digital learning coach, sometimes! #formativechat
I have gone outside of my comfort zone, but it has made my Ss more in their comfort zone with learning and understanding the risks I’m willing to take for them to succeed. #formativechat

A3 Always thankful to have to opportunity to measure Ss successes and how they grow and learn each day/month/year. I hope it’s what helps tsk come back and do it again each year #formativechat
A1 Also I think we concentrate on the wrong data we should be looking at the data at the process of learning not just at the end of a unit and implying learning has now ended for that concept #formativechat

A3: I am thankful that FA done right helps us build learning relationships with students and, more importantly, helps students build learning relationships with themselves. #formativechat

A3 I am thankful that using FA makes me a better teacher because I’m able to find ways to incrementally help each student succeed using FA allows me to tailor instruction that summative/ benchmark assessments could never do #formativechat
A3: That when used correctly, it can and will help you make better teaching decisions to benefit the students. Without them, we wouldn’t be here #formativechat
A3: I am thankful for formatives because they push me in a good direction and guide me along the way. My students deserve endless feedback. #formativechat
A3: #formativechat I am thankful that my Ss see the value of FA, take them seriously so that we all can know what was learned or not. I am thankful to watch my Ss grow as learners!
Happy Thanksgiving everyone! I am thankful for #formativechat starting off my week with motivation, inspiration, and rejuvenation! Thanks so much! #formativechat
A3 - with #formativeassessment learning becomes more personal for students and they see learning as something that is theirs not something done too them. Creates a better environment for #lifelonglearners and that's something to be #thankful for #formativechat
