#Edchat is a hashtag, a movement—it is a weekly organized Twitter discussion of educators and people interested in education that meet virtually from all over the world. #Edchat serves as a conversation thread on Twitter and is also used for organized weekly discussions.
❤️The best teacher is not human and it is not technology. It’s both of us together! Humans and technology changing the world together & opening so many doors for our students! Thanku @ericcurts & #TICL18 for an absolutely amazing conference! @NorthwestAEA@plaea#edchat#edtech
An administrator who is willing to do the work they ask if you, who listens to understand, and is proactive. Any one of these things shows care! #improveinst@ddigiova
How do effective administrators balance their administrative responsibilities with their educator principals and beliefs? Do they ever conflict? #Edchat
Being available-which means responding to emails in a timely fashion so that colleagues and parents feel that they are important, part of the community, and that their voice matters #Edchat
Excellent communication, and relationship and partnership building. Present to families and the community as the face of the school, not just the name on memos. #EdChat

I think an outstanding adminstrator has his or hers boots on the ground and sets an example of servant leadership by working alongside staff. #edchat#improveinst@ddigiova

Setbacks are part of the journey! Just because everything isn’t going according to plan, it doesn’t mean you’re going in the wrong direction. Success is a journey—embrace it, and don’t give up! #edchat
Just came off a year with a new admin. Great year. One thing he did was narrow goals down to 2. Then, he supported, supported, supported and worked to keep us in it right up to the last day of school. #edchat
I want to be on the same page as my Admin, but I do not require him/her to visit my room or talk to me on a daily basis to know they have my back. #edchat
This is a great question Tom! When you are talking about “compliance” issues...they can sometimes conflict. I follow Fullan’s advice-get a “C” in compliance unless it fits in you purpose. #edchat
Completely agree. Find a commonality between you and your students to help build a relationship/trust. Once the trust is there, everything else hopefully falls into place! #edchat#improveinst@ddigiova
I've been resisting Twitter because I didn't need another social media feed to check. Have a lot to learn but seeing some of the benefits to this format. #edchat@ddigiova#improvinst
I don't need the same guidance as most teachers ... for the most part I just need Admin to clear a path ... maybe run interference ... and communicate with me. #edchat
In that case, then I imagine most Ts have not had the opportunity to interact with admins outside of their buildings to really KNOW what traits they need.... #Edchat
Come to our ( @JulieDHasson & I) #NAESP18 session: The Good, the Bad & the Ugly of Principal-Teacher Relationships July 10th 3 pm Outstanding admin are: great listeners, compassionate, organized, transparent, visionaries, .. Our Leadership page https://t.co/jPnn39hV6N#edchat
Admin should not micromanage their teachers ... i do not need an Admin questioning my every move ... i want them to trust me, but that trust is earned over time. Cannot expect trust to happen just because you walk through the door. #edchat
#edchat That ability comes from narrowing the focus of the campus. Eds get hammered with so much that it can feel impossible. The best admins help the Ts keep eyes on the prize. And convince Ts of their power to be powerful in the lives of Ss.
Not saying it's a bad idea. I think it depends on the purpose as well as the relationship with their staff. Some teachers want/need that time to vent or shoot the breeze without the "boss" in the room. #edchat
Sts never forgets
Nice story, a sts wanted to go on a field trip and only had 1 riyal (pennies),bus cost 2. His teacher gave him an extra riyal. Years later that boy became a millionaire and didn't forget his teacher, came back and bought him a house and more👍

In Israel, the term superintendent is heard a lot as someone who checks if the school goes by the rules, a bureaucrat who's there to look over your shoulder. They don't actually lead you... #Edchat
#edchat we went from having 28 printed non-negotiables to 2. And the funny thing is that most of those 28 were probably contained in the 2 big ideas, but it felt manageable.
Maybe schools need to revamp their student presentations too! Narrative memos have replaced PowerPoint presentations at Amazon. Here are three reasons why. https://t.co/iRv4dTxpg1#edchat#pblchat
Admin should have their door open and if any teacher on campus is afraid to go in and plop down in a chair to talk to any Admin there is a problem and it needs to be addressed. #edchat
I believe they should be. I know some principals who have changed their titles to "Lead Learner." #edchat Administrators lead by example, and we should model what it means to be a lifelong learner.
Absolutely! When the principal is not sitting with his team (teachers, custodial staff, administrators, other faculty and staff in the building) the principal should be sitting with the kids. #edchat
In my ES, Ts have "duty free lunch", but partner with another classroom teacher. One goes to lunch, the other recess, and the one at lunch usually eats w/the kiddos. #Edchat
Admin should have their door open and if any teacher on campus is afraid to go in and plop down in a chair to talk to any Admin there is a problem and it needs to be addressed. #edchat
I sit at a separate table so they can get to me to talk if they want but swing by to chat as I walk around the kids’ tables. Works great. (Our tchrs don’t have duty-free lunch). #edchat
I don't need the same guidance as most teachers ... for the most part I just need Admin to clear a path ... maybe run interference ... and communicate with me. #edchat
Most days I have lunch with kids in my room ... they play Just Dance ... use computers ... hang out ... some days up to 40 are in my area ... i'm ok with it. I rarely eat with other teachers. #edchat
Admin is typically presumed the lead educator by school community. They need to form a team within the building to find out how instruction is going though. Can't just wait until summative results. #edchat
As an admin I was invited into the faculty lunchroom to participate in the trivia and fun they have every day. That was seven years ago. I still try to attend when I can. I have no purpose other than to build relationships. #edchat
Yes ... but then I have to understand my role ... I am Social Studies Dept Chair and grade level leader ... i sometimes act as a bridge between Teachers and Admin ... #edchat
I think it's an assumption admins are education savvy. Some are just really good managers. If they are supportive of our tech use, they don't need to be savvy IMO. #edchat
I have found that eating lunch w/other Ts too often tends to be a drag. Lots of complaints..... I usually eat with my teammate or alone. Occasionally with Ss (I don't have the same lunch time as my Ss, typically). #Edchat
#edchat - I've had great tech savvy admins and great non-tech admins. But the non-great ones made sure the staff had great tech support. They weren't the answer, but they pointed to people who had answers.
Mine does. I would find it strange if he didn't. The again, he also teaches. We tend not to have the divide between teachers and administrators here in Australia that exists in the US. I find the word 'administrator' odd. #edchat
Another educator with admin responsibilities. They should still be finding new and innovative ways to help our students and teachers be successful. #edchat#LUlearns
Agree. I don't have a magic potion to make it easier to be told "you suck" at something. Yet, maybe we need more honesty more often which may lead to getting better at it. :) #edchat
#edchat I work through lunch. Always need to get ready for the next class. And I have found that if I relax with other Ts during lunch, I have a hard time getting my energy up for the next class. But I'm the weird one here I bet.

Eduleaders who are more concerned with growing/protecting their brand/privilege than contributing to the ongoing evolution of teaching. They’re like the Kardashians of education. #edchat
In that vein I think admin who have good supportive people working with then in assistant roles who are educators or tech educators then I see this as having a strong administrative team #edchat
#edchat Technology use is hit and miss for administrators. I have had some very tech-savvy and other who weren't. As a counselor, I try to fill in the cracks so that we all work well as a team. Data collection and analysis are must-have skills.
If they are expecting technology to play a major role in the classroom then they should be able to help teachers grow in the area of technology as well. #edchat#LUlearns
We don't use the term 'admins', seems a strange title for leaders. The exec at our school complete the same PD as teachers, because they are teachers. Plus they also undertake individualised PD in relation to their leadership responsibilities. #edchat
#edchat Right, on the data collection and analysis. My current P is able to look at a chart and put his finger right on the place that needs attention. I'm looking at a mess of numbers and he totally helps me figure out what it means.
I had to listen to a teacher complain about how horrible the kids were behaving ... then complained because Admin tried to step in to help ... didn't want their help beyond kicking kids out of school #edchat

If you can't find the sucker at the table, chances are you are the sucker. I truly believe most/many teachers are doing the best they know how. We all need help growing/improving. #edchat
Having honest conversations is a start but exposing the flailing teachers to other methods/ideas/pedagogy is the key. They don't know what they don't know. #edchat
#edchat I've seen Ts that I thought had to be miserable due to classroom management or test performance issues... I've seen them get better. I've seen them need to get nudged out. Sometimes I wonder about the Ts student teaching. Was someone not watching?

I see too many Ts who just want kids "out of their room". Makes me angry and sad when I hear that. Usually after I make a comment or two, they learn not to complain to me.... #Edchat

May not be popular thought, but if a teacher wants kids out of their room I would want that teacher out of the building. Only exception would be if kids posed threat to safety of teacher/students. #edchat
They should at least be present online as the face and voice of the school. As a parent, I feel their absence while following other principal-leaders across the world. #EdChat
#edchat I agree with the full year. And there needs to be a significant amount of feedback. I was a mentor teacher this year (1 semester). Great experience. Helped me be a better T. My S teacher was so good at listening to feedback.

Seems like a great opportunity to connect with the kids, on an informal basis. In what other setting do they have the opportunity to do this regularly? #EdChat
I agree. I just had a rough year w/ Ts who were given many opportunities for growth who pretty much stayed in the same place all year, to the kids' detriment. #Edchat
#edchat - I don't think it's unfair if it's part of her education. She's earning college credit. At the MS level, I'm not sure if the ST needs to teach the full day. But the full year allows for more cycles of feedback.

In terms of maintaining teacher certification, yes. I guess other decisions come down to district choices. In mine there are lots of opportunity for admins to have continuing PD and some is required and some is optional #edchat
Thank you all. #edchat#myTakeAway asking questions is not dumping, it’s not venting, it’s really wanting to learn and grow. Some here admin/principals, some teachers. All want what’s best for their students IMHO
#edchat How did you feel about it? I have found that most Ts who go through alternative certs feel horribly unprepared. But there are probably programs that do it well.

I had one quarter of ST (but only 2 weeks of that was full-day teaching, and then the T did the lesson plans), many practicums (too many to list). Still did not feel prepared. #Edchat
