A1. As a teacher I always enjoyed teaching non-fiction, the students are always excited about the many different topics. Looking forward to watching the learning @HiawathaSchool this quarter. #d100chat#hiawathapride
I'm super excited to see the connection between reading informational text and producing informational writing. This is one of my favorite times of year because there is no strict "reading time" or "writing time" It's just Literacy, how it should be :) #d100chat
Q1: I'm excited about the Westward Expansion unit we are doing for writing (and nonfic reading). The Ss get intrigued with stories of gold and survival of pioneers. BUT, have begun researching more about the Mex-Amer War and Native American resettlement. #d100chat#tigerslearn
#d100chat A1: I'm excited to move from concrete to more abstract things to write about. Literally: chair, floor, friend #1, friend #2. It feels SO good to present a developmentally appropriate curric to my Kindergarten Ss
A1: @ELAAllDay13 shared non-fiction sign posts with the 7th grade team and I plan to use them to help s's determine what information a math word problem is telling them and what it is asking them to do. #d100chat#D100Inspires#hmsfalcons#BetterTogether
A1: I am excited to see text features in use this quarter. TF are not something I remember being taught in ES but they are so important to create meaning! #d100chat
A1: I am excited to teach the art of research. It keeps me on my toes. I feel it pushes me as a teacher to make sure each little mind in front of me understands that credit is deserved. #d100chat#hiawathapride
Q1:My group this year is bursting with the most random facts! I can’t wait to dive into finding legitimate sources, great information and how to cite properly! #d100chat
Math is ALL informational text! We are using #LearnWithIM this year, and I am excited to learn more about the language routines. 3 Reads is one I really want to improve to help Ss be more independent. Anyone have experience with this?
#d100chat#d100inspires
I love seeing Ss taking ownership of their learning and becoming teachers. Hearing their vocabulary grow through nonfiction reading and writing is exciting! #D100Chat#d100inspires 🤓

A1: I'm most excited about working with students to find a topic in regards to the environment that is important to them. From that topic I can't wait to see what they come up with as a possible solution to an authentic problem. #d100chat#d100inspires
I love the informational units because they are filled with students asking questions! I love when we see their curiosity and questions come out more, because then we truly have a more student centered classroom. #d100chat

I'm loving biography picture books lately. 'I Dissent' is a good one for today ;) Also, I love all of Serravallo's informational mentor texts that we got last month! #d100chat
Q2: #d100chat. I am surrounded by nonfiction right now. I am enjoying "The Reflective Edcator's Guide to Classroom Research" "The Art of Coaching Teams" and my FAV A Dictionary of English Language by Dr. Samuel Johnson 1775 @KomenskyLions#komenskymatters#d100inspires
Q2: I read over 50 Newsela articles relating to Westward Expansion! All articles are in a matrix, identifying what text structure is used so we can use them in Q2 U2 reading unit, too. #d100chat#tigerslearn Personal nonfic books up next!
A2 Hands down one of my favorite informational series is Captured History by @CapstonePub. Can a photograph change the world? Yes! Check out all the historical time periods/ events on @myONreader by searching Captured History. #d100chat
A2: #d100chat NF: Currently reading Assata and....I know it's YA but the writing in The Hate U Give blew me away!! Sometimes my teacher brain likes when I read non-education books.
A2: The Differentiated Classroom:Responding to the Needs of All Learners by Tomlinson has great usable strategies & I've been referencing The First Days of School:How to be an Effective Teacher by Wong&Wong to refresh my own procedures and support my mentees #d100chat#hmsfalcons
Q2 cont'd: I love memoirs & autobios. Currently listening to Lauren Graham's Talking As Fast as I Can. I HIGHLY recommend @Trevornoah 's Born a Crime. It has stayed w/me since I first read it. And of course, anything about QUEENS Madeleine Albright & Ruth Bader Ginsburg #d100chat
A2: Unfortunately the last non-fiction book that I purchased is one that I still haven't gotten to sit and read but it's "Washington's Spies" by Alexander Rose (I know I teach 5th, but that will always be one of my favorite topics). #d100chat

I had a chance to do some fun reading this weekend, and here are two I am currently into. @benorlin's Math with Bad Drawings and Troublemakers by Cara Shalaby Both are gems so far! #d100inspires#d100chat
A2: One of my all time favorite books is Owen and Mzee. It is such a special story of invisible differences. It tugs at heart strings and has a relatable message of friendship for kids to connect to. #d100chat#hiawathapride
A2: Not gonna lie this is a stretch for me, nonfiction (usually) isn’t my cup of tea.
But here are two of my personal faves
Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow and Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand #d100chat#outofmycomfortzone
A2: Not gonna lie, I learn something new every time I read a kids non-fiction book! #lifelonglearner Grown up reading Coaching Teams, Biliteracy from the Start, Divine Renovation #d100chat
A2. Don't have a specific title, but hoping to see many more Ss reading and learning from @myONreader News. Great source to learn vocabulary and about current events. #d100chat#hiawathapride
I've been having a lot of conversation around teaching our students the signal words, so that they can identify text structure to help them monitor their comprehension... found this chart and thought it was a pretty good example! #d100chat
I love finding books about the same topic written in different genres. These are both about the Revolutionary War, but one is a graphic novel and one is filled with primary sources. #D100chat
A2: Wouldn’t say a favorite but currently reading Becoming a Critical Educator and Teaching in 2 Languages for my grad school courses! Takes up most of my reading time! #d100chat
A3: I will be following all of your anchor chart answers! If anyone has any math specific ideas, please send them my way! #readytolearn#d100chat#hmsfalcons
A3:Here is a great anchor chart we always display based on Text Structure with visuals and keywords. This paired with a mix and match activity really allows the students to develop great conversation analyzing the structures. Simple, sweet, and to the point.#d100chat#hiawathapride
A3: I'm still coming to terms with my anchor chart making ability, however I am excited to use anchor charts as visual models of the nonfiction text features that we push for kids to understand and utilize to build their comprehension. #d100chat
This anchor chart started the wall, teaching Ss to give more details in drawings when writing about community helpers. It went digital, so @KinderPanthers could use it to model, and the Ss could view it as they wrote independently. An anchor chart w intentionality! #d100chat
A3: Didn't take a pic, but made a t-chart comparing fiction and non-fiction
Also, love the bottom anchor chart and will use it as inspiration this week #d100chat

Q4: Shout out to @kimboslice317 and @MrsSuomi for being the most welcoming grade level team. Their support is unmatched and I am so grateful! #D100Chat
A4 #d100chat: Shoutout to the Heinneman website when I don't know what to draw or how LC represents it, I get some great ready-made visuals for each bend or ML
I'm so proud of the work that Ts have done to look critically at our Ss performance on the ELA Q1 common assessment. I've had some of the best academic conversations over the last couple weeks & know that the unpacking & reflection will help us grow stronger as Ts. #d100chat
A4: I would like to shout out @ELAAllDay13 again for being a great sounding board as I focus on literacy in math, this year (and a great next-door neighbor)! And @Ms_Umana and @ConicDal for being awesome and teaching me something new every time we meet! #d100chat#hmsfalcons

Shoutout to my Hiawatha Huskies! I am so lucky to get to learn from them all this year. They have been so welcoming and open with me and I can’t wait to see what the rest of the year will bring! #D100Chat#d100Inspires#hiawathapride#orgullohiawatha
@leahod and #d100chat Thank y'all for you patience tonight as I structured each and every A: as a Q: and not one person said anything!!!! Some of us just need more think time. #d100inspires. Good night!
