Welcome to #3rdchat ! We are glad you are here! Please join me in welcoming @donlin_trish as our moderator tonight. We will be discussing Personalized Learning
Hi everyone! Edwin. 3rd grade teacher in Philadelphia. This year will be my 2nd year. Students start on the 27th of August. Excited and anxious at the same time. #3rdchat
#3rdchat Hi, all! I’m Mindi from the Chicago suburbs. I’m starting my 25th year of teaching and my 3rd in 3rd! Before that I was a 7th grade ELA teacher and then a lit coach.
A1. Years? Four decades walking hallways and being in classrooms. What an amazing journey is was! Now I try each day to help others in education. #3rdchat
A1 I began my career teaching in a 2/3 multiage classroom. My principal encouraged me to focus on personalized learning and it was a natural fit for my classroom. She was very supportive. #3rdchat
A1. I went with an inspiring co-teacher @behrens_jeanne to a bootcamp on PL at #cesa9 in the summer of 2014. Why, I knew what I was doing wasn't getting to all my learners. #3rdchat
A1: Journey began 2 years ago in my 3rd grade class after learning about Personallized Learning in Blended Learning in Action (#blinaction). Wanted to teach learners where they were & show learning based on their strengths. #3rdchat@Catlin_Tucker@jasontoddgreen@TeachOnTheEdge
A1 About 5 years ago I attended a CESA 9 PL Boot Camp because I was interested in finding a way to move my learners forward in taking responsibility for their own learning. I wanted to find a way for learners to be more engaged in school. #3rdchat

Hello everyone, Mike here from the suburbs of Philadelphia, Starting my 15th year, 12.5 years in the classroom and 1.5 years as an instructional coach. Looking forward to working with @Ron_Martiello this year to help teachers with tech integration and PL. #3rdchat
A1: I would say last summer before I even started my 1st year. I took some workshops on my own time. I did because I wanted to go into my 1st year with some ideas. Glad I did those workshops! #3rdchat
A1: Being in special education I have been doing personalized learning for 10 years. Everything I do is personalized and tailored to meet individual ss needs. #3rdchat

A1: I participate in a chat #EISDReads started by an instructional coach and princpal at my school. I said it was cool. My principal said there are more ways to learn on twitter using PLNs so I searched “3rd”. I’ve never been the same! #3rdchat
That is a lovely story. I am glad you shared it. Be sure to continue sharing it as those new to Twitter might enjoy reading about your journey. #3rdchat

A2: Math. Students enter class at many different levels. Station Rotation used to meet w/diverse groups & conference. Students show HOW they solved problems in different ways. Digital curriculum apps also support students where they are. #3rdchat#blinaction#personalizedlearning
A2 I feel comfortable using PL for math and writing. I am still working to get a handle on the best way to personalize reading for specific skill development and to assess progress on reading standards. #3rdchat
A2. I find math an area I do best and am most comfortable. I have more resources @SteveWyborney that really work well getting the learners talking and excited. #3rdchat
Hi #3rdchat, Brett here also from the suburbs of Philadelphia, After a dozen years in the classroom, I have been a Learning Coach going on 7 years. Working with @Ron_Martiello, @mikebotti and @megburkeNPSD along with five others this year with a strong focus on PL.

A2 math and writing. Students are at so many varying levels with math. Stations and small group instruction is the best way to reach them. Writing is such a personal process that you have to personalize the goals and process for each s's. #3rdchat

1st yr: Personalized book projects was my first step in this learning journey. I was looking for students to be invested. One kiddo dressed up as Willy Wonka and had a whole presentation to share. Wayyy better than reading 20 book reports. #3rdchat
A2: I'm going to be the odd ball and say reading. I was a reading minor in college and have had training in multiple types of reading instruction, so I feel more comfortable personalizing my small group/individual reading instruction for ss. #3rdchat

A3: Last year, conferenced w/students & reviewed performance in Math. Made sure they were comfortable where they were. We decided whether to go deeper into Problem Solving or try a different grade standard. Students advocated often and took risks. #3rdchat#personalizedlearning
A3. I am having more conversations with the learners about their thinking, interests, and curiosities. I am helping them with finding their voice in education. Always asking what to do you think, rather than giving an answer. #3rdchat
A3 Create self driven learners through guiding questions: What are you going to learn? How are you going to learn it? How will you show me your learning. This takes modeling, showing videos of classrooms/schools that are personalizing. #3rdchathttps://t.co/B1jiqDQNEx
Better for everyone. We do a personalized research project each year. Last year I had a student rap about the Golden Gate Bridge! It was incredible! #3rdchat
Creating a "why wall" this year. Any time you have a question about anything, post it. Soft starts and free time are for extra inquiry into why wall questions #3rdchat
A2: Reading is my strength. We use a program through @ScholasticEd to assess where each student is leveled and teach in small groups based on each need. The students even track their progress. Last year, I had a kiddo jump 8 reading levels! #3rdchat
We do informal phonics inventories & item analysis on weekly comprehension test to break down what skills ss need to focus on. Also look at personal interest then find reading materials to match. I also use a variety of instructional strategies/styles depending on need. #3rdchat
A2 I feel most comfortable using personalize learning in Math, ELA and Social Studies. I think being familiar with the objectives and what can be done to explore them makes personalized learning more natural. #3rdchat

A3. Created this from the book "How to Personalize Learning" by @bbray27 and K. McClaskey. Marvelous book FULL of resources to help each step along the way. #3rdchat
A3: What I am going to try and do is giving my students more voice and ownership of their learning. I’m going to attempt to do this by having real conversations with them. Also looking at some other ideas from you all. #3rdchat
A 4 Admin seems aware of imminent change & have supported internal and external PD in this area. My principal encouraged forward steps. Some parents have verbalized support for PL. We need more momentum from both. From the trenches progress never seems to be fast enough.#3rdchat
I do phonics inventories and item analysis on comprehension tests to determine areas of ss need. Individualized reading materials based on interest and level. Variety of instructional approaches depending on ss- OG, Reading Recovery, Reciprocal teaching, etc #3rdchat
A4. Change is difficult and it is a process. Our admin @kelly_halvorsen joined us in an academy (year long class) for PL. District had CESA 1 come in. Community supports by coming to our Parent Days In! Currently we have 3 scheduled for this year. #3rdchat
A3 I am involving the students more in tracking their own data and progress towards goals. IncludingI would love to hear about how others organize data folders. #3rdchat
A4: I am excited to say @NPSD is working with the @MCIU & @Institute4PL. I am currently working with other professional educators to begin a student-centered approach to teaching with the end-goal being #personalizedlearning. #3rdchat
#BookCampPD decided today on our focus for professional learning books for our Fall Focus. Next step, to arrange for all of the authors to join our chats. Ohhh - we are changing times too! Sunday evenings at 7:30 PM EST in hopes of getting more involved. #3rdchat
A3: In our district, we are newly 1:1 so right now, I think we r still focusing on helping Ts teach in a 1:1 environment & move towards more transformational learning opportunities for students. While we do have some Ts who r there & are starting to create more PL ops. #3rdchat
I want to do this as well and am also looking for ideas on how to organize or where to begin on this. I think this would be great for my kids! #3rdchat
A4 If it is the best things for kids we are encouraged to try it. My admin is very supportive of our efforts to make learning more meaningful for our students. #3rdchat
A4. Hopefully ... admin is sitting down with grade level teams and discussing how school wide goals can be implemented. Conversations should go from "see this data" to "how are we going to meet all of these individual needs?" #3rdchat

A4: Our Admin wants to implement more personalized learning for our students. I think it’s a goal for this year. We’ll how community will support. #3rdchat
A4: Our Admin / Community knows that it's going to take time to transition to more PL and they acknowledge that there may be setbacks at first, but in the end, we will have teachers who are creating better learning experiences for our Ss. #3rdchat

Shift from school to self driven learning: I often allow students to design their own projects within guidelines. I also given open ended tasks with an overarching goal in mind. 1/2 #3rdchat
A4: My admin makes sure we adjust and adapt. We utilize a power hour for RTI and, they help out with coteaching and small groups. Parents attend student lead conferences and first friday, first hour where they join the class for one hour a month. #3rdchat
#personalizedlearning is about teaching kids where they are and moving them forward. Families will appreciate the personal touch on teaching and learning. They will be blown away by how much their children have been empowered to be independent learners. #3rdchat
Often I’ll have a small set of objectives that I’m looking for. Then when students complete the task I look over my subjects outcome lists and find more to document. #3rdchat
A4: I am excited to say @NPSD is working with the @MCIU & @Institute4PL. I am currently working with other professional educators to begin a student-centered approach to teaching with the end-goal being #personalizedlearning. #3rdchat
A5: Our PL teams (teachers, coaches & admin) being able to have the opportunity to discuss what is working & what isn't has helped a lot. Members who are willing to experiment and seek answers to problems and share. #3rdchat

A5: I’m a @Flipgrid believer! I adore using it as pen pals and ways to assess student learning. This year I’m using it for introductions on the first day! #3rdchat
This is a FABULOUS chart to use for beginning conversations about personalization, differentiation and individualization. If your team is heading down this path ... please, please save it? #3rdchat

One of the teachers in our PL PLN used a binder system where the learner kept pre-tests, post-tests, examples of work. These were first graders so she used a 😁☹️face system. Very self reflective! #3rdchat
The top ten on the list. There were 53 total and 288 educators voted.
Thanks very much for asking!
I hope the new time will fit busy educator's schedules a bit better. #3rdchat
A6. For me the biggest hurdle of implementing PL is teaching the learners to show and apply what they learned, rather than what they think I want. #3rdchat
A 6 Biggest hurdle for me is myself. Being uncertain of next steps and lack of confidence that I will be supported. Time is also a hurdle at times. #3rdchat
A6: curriculum requiring whole group instruction. With just a small block of time to work with, it’s hard to implement everything the administration requires and still meet the needs of ALL students. #3rdchat
So many resources! I love https://t.co/3qhpuy5QDu! I pull from released tests, OG Manual, our reading specialist (she's kinda awesome), ixl, abcmouse, abcya, & my huge cupboard of things accumulated through the years. #3rdchat
A6. I believe the first step is fully understanding what it is ... and what it is not.
We just finished a focus on #ProDriven where professional learning was discussed in detail. Here is a chart of the steps adult learners can take. #3rdchat
A6: Knowing how to begin and where to begin. There are many different entry points depending on what you want to focus on first. https://t.co/DQSeJK4lu7#3rdchat
A6: I need to commit to being more intentional with goal setting. Partnering with students to create goals and helping them all follow through. Never perfect, but always moving forward. #3rdchat
A6: Time! I see my ss for such a small amount of time (usually 45-60 min 2 or 3 times a week per subject). Even with small groups it can be a challenge to PL for everyone everyday. #3rdchat
I remember when I had initial conversations with teachers about not giving out homework each day and never grading it for countless hours. They beamed from ear to ear! Much better ways to spend your time. #3rdchat
A6 The biggest hurdle for me is getting kids to the point where they can receive and give constructive feedback. I think this is needed to be fully invested in the design process when working on projects and tasks. It means taking the next step. #3rdchat

A7. My goals are; Keep learning and evolving on my PL journey. Support and learn with and from my learners as they start their PL journey. Work at being better at informing parents of what is happening in the classroom. Share #3rdchat
A7: As a learning coach, I am looking to get professionals on board with student voice, learning paths, flexible learning environments & other look fors as they begin their journey toward #personalizedlearning. #3rdchat
A7 My goal is to keep learning about implementing so that I can support the people who are doing the hard work, be a teacher-cheer-leader and find a way to actively mentor others as a 2nd career! #retiredfrom classroom #3rdchat
It was developed through educator voice and choice.
I thought ... why in the world should I be the one selecting professional learning topics for others?
I am "over the moon" excited!! #3rdchat
A7: I’m in a new school this year, and we are a @TheLeaderinMe school. I’m focusing on goal setting for my classroom, and my students will set goals and track their progress. #3rdchat
It is a challenge when there are dictated curriculums to work with/around! I’d like to look more globally at the learning that needs to take place. Maybe project based learning? #3rdchat
A6: curriculum requiring whole group instruction. With just a small block of time to work with, it’s hard to implement everything the administration requires and still meet the needs of ALL students. #3rdchat
A6/7 I'd love to read more about personalized learning and how it fits best in LA classroom... how can it help with the test? State tests are my biggest hurdle #3rdchat
Please check the hashtag and I will be sure to post and post and post and post our lineup for the new Fall Focus. Glad to read you found one that interests you! #3rdchat
My admin listens to it all and tries to lighten the load, My co-teachers and Paras carry out PL when I'm not in the room. My Paras help with data tracking for goals and providing individualized instruction on a daily basis. #3rdchat

A7. My goals are a bit different as I want to continue to improve how I can help guide educators in their professional learning. I adore having my passion continue in helping others. #3rdchat
A8: Start small. Take 1 element of #personalizedlearning and become an expert in it. Get your foothold and start climbing. One element will lead to another as you grow with your students and the other professionals around you. Every step is worth it. #3rdchat
A 8 Believe in yourself, be a Maverick, look for the helpers, have faith in the learners, keep seeking answers and know that it is not about the technology, STAY CURIOUS!
Use Twitter to PD-there are so many good resources. #3rdchat

It definitely should! Train her in how you want things done then turn her loose. My Paras are amazing, by the end of the year they were helping find individualized learning activities for mini lessons and covering when I had meetings. A good Para is a true blessing! #3rdchat
