Hi #caedchat PLN. Lemarr Treadwell, Fresno Ca. Microsoft Innovative Educator - Expert, Microsoft Consultant to Fresno Unified School District ... 4th largest school district in CA. @FresnoEdTech@FUSD_Libraries
A1) The first thing I recommend before a topic is to work with Ss about how to listen to each other. My fav tool for this is a Constructivist Listening Dyad
“To create a safe space to become better at listening and talking in depth”
https://t.co/tMKLdaJi9B#caedchat
I would have liked the students to hold a Skype Conference with a local/statewide candidate with prepared questions. Live interview would be engaging and relevant. @FresnoEdTech#caedchat
I am teaching Video Broadcating now and hand't really thought much about making TV election ads. love the idea. Plus... I am new to this #TeachWithPuppetMaster idea too #caedchat
A1) My 8th grade students just finished studying Article I of the Constitution. Intentionally great timing for Tuesday's midterm. We are in the thick of it and covering it all. #caedchat
I love https://t.co/ShpTNV68us
Great resources and games. Ready to go/high quality handouts and PPTs that can convert to Google Slides
I'm going to share "So you think you can Vote" : a Brief History of America's Voting Rights with my students this week. excellent! #caedchat
A1) my school participated in the CA mock election on Oct 9. I use real world opportunities to teach Ss gov & election. Headlines, tweets, articles help to guide class discussions.
#caedchat
Q2: Sky is the limit. The more they know about their local, state and federal races the more they will understand how important it is to be a responsible citizen and vote. #caedchat
A2) One of my fav tools for helping students understand how we elect who we do in our wacky Electoral College, is to walk them through this site https://t.co/AcPYWb2gHY . The maps of past elections is eye opening. #caedchat
Yikes!! Hoping that won’t be the case for my 2nds! We started talking about fed vs state vs local and three branches and they had all sorts of Qs about govt roles. Great to see their enthusiasm! #caedchat

A2: I think we really missed the boat by not having basic civics - with related geography - in 9th grade. Government is taught for one semester in senior year backed up to econ. Ss need to be current with govt every year in order to be engaged citizens #caedchat
A2 Government should be relevant to our students' lives. Service learning like @crfusa 's Civic Action Project and awards like https://t.co/v7aEGdVtS0 are essential. #caedchat
A2) structure & function of govt, how we participate in a democracy and why it's important to participate, various levels & opportunities to get involved. #caedchat
A2) We need to rise above the standards & stress the local vote. Low voter turnout and general apathy become a part of that conversation. We need to share the data with our kids. Midterm Math Infographic from @icivics! https://t.co/6d7vWKqMDF#caedchat
A3: We research candidates and propositions, talk about pros/cons, and focus on learning to have an open minded discussion with people we may not agree with. Ss need to learn to have discussion, backed by evidence, and not get crazy about disagreements.
#caedchat
A2 Bias. Racism. Corruption. Offering Ss well-crafted questions that allow them to weave and push their way to truths. Especially in HS, students need to see the falsities beyond canned curriculum from weak textbook companies. #caedchat
Could tie this into U.S. History ... how the fathers of country envisioned a new democracy at work. Compare the original signers of the Declaration to this Congress. #caedchat
A3: In the past we’ve had Ss learn more about a local proposition on the ballot, and create persuasive ad either for/against. We started talking generally about how Bill becomes a law this year and relating to how we can pitch ideas for rules needed on campus #caedchat

A3) Speaking of topics & props, we often have Ss take part in debates. Often though, these lessons can be controlled by a few loud voices. Check out this difference between DEBATE & DIALOGUE from Everyday Democracy @EvDemhttps://t.co/m0bMfvmn1X#caedchat
A3) We are closely watching the 39th district election. The massive amount of scandalous propaganda from both sides have reached the middle school kid. They have this stuff memorized! I can just bring in the understanding. #caedchat
Agreed @MrStrong3rd! I think media literacy ties in well too. Always trying to figure out what this all looks like at primary level— so far, mainly talks around empathy and respect #caedchat
A2 Bias. Racism. Corruption. Offering Ss well-crafted questions that allow them to weave and push their way to truths. Especially in HS, students need to see the falsities beyond canned curriculum from weak textbook companies. #caedchat
A4: I would think that the President's claim to be able to overturn birthright citizenship (14th amendment) would provide a rich treasure trove of history, philosophy for Ss. Checks and balances, how an amendment is made, etc. #caedchat
A3) I think Prop 7 about lawmakers to vote on changing Daylight Saving Time is a great hook to get Ss thinking about how laws can change our daily lives #caedchat
A4) Prop 10 Rent Control and Prop 2 Program/Housing Spending for Individuals with Mental Disabilities- conversation starters and close to the hearts and minds of my North OC students. #caedchat

When the president made this claim, I made sure to share online military newspaper articles. I explained that while these newspapers may be Pro-American, they typically painted each political party fairly #caedchat

A4: One of the ones in our county is Measure H which is specifically for a bond for our district to get more funding for facilities upgrades to our older schools. It's a great way to bring up taxes AND keeping our schools in shape, but also talk about where money goes. #caedchat
A4 one of our local teacher is running for a park board position - he’s put together a great campaign and it’s exciting to see the interest in a local board race which normally creates more yawns than votes #caedchat

Q4) Here is a shameless plug regarding this topic! I co-host a podcast called “Talking Social Studies” (w/ @CHitch94@STLinOK@ScottPadway
& we had an episode all about Teach The Election. You can see our show notes here

A5) casos online, @icivics, local reps have resources, some have programs to help ss better understand the process of voting and/or running for office. #caedchat
A5 I like to share w/my Ss about my uncle who’s a sports mechanic - he’s known to fix all kinds of games and races including elections..and of course his mantra is vote early vote often.... then after a chuckle we can start a conversation about election fraud, etc #caedchat
CBS Sunday morning always puts out such great content. I am going to share this with my kids. I also shred their segment on E-Cigs from a few weeks back as well #caedchat
"There's no such things as not voting. Not voting is voting."
Since civics was dropped from most school curricula, awareness of our constitutional government, and our participation in it, has declined markedly
@MoRocca gives us a lesson in civics https://t.co/jIDeSqZi2E
A4 one of our local teacher is running for a park board position - he’s put together a great campaign and it’s exciting to see the interest in a local board race which normally creates more yawns than votes #caedchat
#caedchat A5: teaching students the confidence to ask Google any question is powerful. Might seem small at first, but building up confidence to ask a question and look at answers is powerful in the end.
A6) To get YOURSELF ready to teach and facilitate these types of lessons check this video out. IT IS A MUST WATCH.
“Political Education in Polarized Times - Diana E. Hess”
https://t.co/XlCZ20q7FA
and shows the WHY we need to have these conversations #caedchat
Yes! Combined CS w/history last couple years and worked w/Ss to create digital voting booths w/@Raspberry_Pi & @scratch Other classes came through to vote on our machines #caedchat
Amanda, I would love to turn our students loose to solve problems in voting! They would come up with some amazing solutions, not party bound solutions. #caedchat

A6) To approach challenging topics, I recommend looking at this resource AGAIN from Diana Hess! Controversy in the Classroom: The Democratic Power of Discussion
https://t.co/85kHMEOnEb#caedchat
A6: teaching students about a discussion where no is allowed to be right or wrong would be a good start. Each person gets to answer the qeustion: what is an example of a controversial question? #caedchat
A6: One approach I have used with controversial topics is anonymous polling, Apps, clickers, whatever - help get the conversation going. It is critical to allow voices to be heard. https://t.co/3aHPXJ4n4T#caedchat
A6 Simply ask how they feel about the thing THEN use their feelings as the fuel for creating their response. This creation can be the most integrated, rigorous, beautiful synthesis of their high-order thinking. You can assess the crap out of it. #caedchat#pbl
Thanks for sharing. Jackie Purdy is awesome and a great example for all of us. I had the honor of working with her on a Teaching American History project! @MHerczog@omilomilomi#caedchat
A6. Create six questions concerning the top six CA propositions. Like this chat. Collect their answers and create an Essay. They just need an opening and a closure. #caedchat
A6: S are already engaged w/ controversial topics and are hungry for someone knowledgeable to talk about it with. S have a firehouse of info about issues, but really sorting through, providing connective tissue, and guiding/questioning are what “teaching” is all about #caedchat
A7. Start early (Early Learners). Local politics, county wide, statewide then national. Recreate voting in classroom. Solve problems in voter registration and suppression. #caedchat
A7: Yes, civic engagement is an essential role of public education. Teach Ss how to think critically, how to create, and help them give voice to what they think is important #caedchat
A7: 100% yes. Understanding civics early will yield the best voter turn out. Although, students have to be continually reminded of the importance of voting or taking part in local politics (city council, school districts, etc) #caedchat
A7 of course. We have to get paste the bubblegum history lessons of memorizing names and dates (Google), building missions (OMG!), drawing timelines (ibid Google) and get to the REAL SHIT. Land of the _______ home of the _______ #caedchat
A7: Absolutely. Making history come alive for our students would help. Let them hear and learn the rich stories of the many figures that animate our rituals and traditions. Think @HamiltonMusical as an example of what’s possible. #caedchat
In reply to
@CAedchat, @MsHaughs, @creativeedtech, @HamiltonMusical
A7. Education play a vital role in the development & progress of country. Example, they built the largest building in the world. Was the largest employer and landowner in US. Filed bankruptcy last week! Sears. #caedchat
A8) Teaching Tolerance .org is such a great resource. For example this link about staying non-partisan
https://t.co/f966jWQZV9
“Staying nonpartisan doesn’t mean staying quiet”
#caedchat
A7) YES! Be brave and push to teach tough topics. We need to prepare our Ss not shy away from difficult lessons. I also think that media literacy is crucial. #caedchat
A7 I encourage my hs students to vote when they come of age, but really stress to become knowledgeable voters. I also stress that it’s their vote not a teachers, family or friends. I want to form their own political identity. #caedchat
I wonder how we encourage Ts to spend more time on these topics in classrooms? Seems like still don’t see regular convos around civics. Feeling of not enough time (outside core curric)? What else? #caedchat
Thank you to everyone who joined the chat tonight. You are what makes #caedchat great! Be sure to follow some educators from tonight's chat. See you next Sunday!
