We chat every Tuesday night at 8:30-9:30 pm CST. All are welcome, especially EarlyEd teachers, leaders & experts. Co-founded & moderated by @techwnancy @JessicaCabeen & @VealHeidi
Hi! I'm Rochelle! I am a double major in Elementary Education and Child Development and a concentration in Religious Studies at Siena Heights University in Michigan! #ecechat
Hi! Luisa from Omaha, I teach kindergarten Dual Language and work to help our district’s 200+ Kdg classrooms be more developmentally informed. Excited to talk math tonight! #ecechat
#ECEchat is in a Q/A format with Q1, Q2, etc. Mark responses w/ A1, A2, A3,…etc
Also don’t forget to include the hashtag #ECEchat so everyone can follow along.
A1. Formally we use CLI Engage. And that is 3x a year. Informally I just do checkins during small group on PK Guideline skills. Looking for better ways to keep track of formative data though! #ECEchat
I am a preservice teacher so I do not routinely use math assessment tools, but I am in math for elementary and I am learning so much! I remember taking the MEAP (1x a year) and my local school districts math assessment (2x a year)#ecechat
A1) we have common assessments created by our district after each chapter in our Go Math. We also do MAP 3x/year. Have an informal math screener that we use every 4-6 weeks (# identification, counting, etc.) Would love to learn about other assessments. #ecechat
A1: Through Houghton Mifflin Harcourt they have a computer adaptive based program that assesses students called Go Math K-8 #ECEchathttps://t.co/uihK6UiEW6
A1 Observation, developmental checklist, performance tasks aligned to PreK standards according to PK3s and PK4s, and @CLIEngage (computer assisted assessment) | #ecechat

A1: My district uses STAR math, ST Math, and number identification. In language therapy, I target several math concepts like biggest/smallest, bigger/smaller, first/next/last, more/less, etc. #ECEchat
A2: One idea I would like to incorporate in my future classroom is having small group math interviews (the same few questions) with students of similar levels and writing notes to keep track fo their progress #ecechat
@PalomoLuisa I noticed that a lot of teachers here in Texas use "Go Math". I am more w/ the literacy side with the HMH and have not investigated it much.
So it must be a comprehensive assessment. #ECEchat

A2) I keep a data binder w/ their ‘at a glance’ info & a portfolio of student work for each child. I’ve gotten into the habit of analyzing student work as we transition from whole group to small group so that I can make quick decisions about which Ss need reteaching. #ecechat
A2: Individual or small group check-ins/assessments. Many teachers have a binder with tabs for different students or a folder for each student. For language therapy, each student has a folder with a goal sheet inside, I can easily track progress of concepts! #ECEchat
A3. We are working on counting to 30 and using 1:1 at the moment. There are lots of skills we integrate daily! I send home a monthly newsletter with activities #ECEchat
A3: In my math class we are working with fractions right now. I hope to send home quick and engaging packets that require both the parent and student #ecechat
A3 My Ss are working to develop adding in basic word problems. I send home a weekly newsletter with examples of problems to work with their kids. #ECEchat
A3: In my math class we are working with fractions right now. I hope to send home quick and engaging packets/ baggies that require both the parent and student to work together #ecechat
A3 Some general skills include # recognition, sequencing and patterning. Providing info to families w/ simple ways they can support learning at home is helpful. 🍎#ECEchat
A3: Goals include: number identification, counting, missing number, adding 2 one-digit numbers. We connect with our parents through @ClassDojo, demonstrate interventions on @Twitter, communicate at parent/teacher conferences, and send home extra practice! #ECEchat
A3: Monthly, we use to send home math games with all the parts and directions on manila folders. The Ss would color it, but the parent volunteers and para-educators would cut out the pieces. #ecechat Families loved it
I am currently a preservice teacher and I am a sophomore in college. I teach in an infant room over the summer and my dream goal is Kindergarten #ecechat
@MissChezick The only challenge was getting the coordination of the cut out and packaging committee. Many times it fell upon the teachers and it was overwhelming at times. But majority of the months it worked. #ecechat
Q4: How are you helping your students to reach their math goals? What instructional practices, strategies, or materials are you using or recommend? #ECEchat
At the kindergarten level, I know they have number ID, counting using 10s frames, basic concepts (bigger/smaller, more/less)... We also have missing number in older grades. I can check to see what all my building/district uses!

A4: I hope to help my future students reach their goals by always communicating with them, validating them, and having incentives if needed (like stickers:)) #ecechat
#ECEchat A3. We are working on rote counting to 30, recognizing numbers to 20, adding to and subtracting from 5. I also send home newsletters with goals for each week.
A4 I have seen the math problem of the day work really well at the lower level like at the upper grade. I was shock at their conceptual thinking #ecechat
A4 Daily we are working on different math story problems whole group and small groups I got from @prekinders. My kids are loving them and there are several skills and themes! #ECEchat
A4) I start with whole group daily routines building number sense before jumping into our mini-lesson. Allowing time for partner work and individual math choice centers has been great. I also am IN LOVE with counting collections and do it weekly. So many valuable skills! #ECEchat
Q4: How are you helping your students to reach their math goals? What instructional practices, strategies, or materials are you using or recommend? #ECEchat
Tonight chat is "On Fire" Tons of useful and quick ideas that teachers can use right away. Thanks you so much everybody!!!!
I am glad I didn't miss out.#ecechat
A4: whole group instruction, math centers, games, songs, magnetic chips with magnetic wands, dry erase pocket folders for worksheets (& writing practice!), pattern blocks, counting cubes, etc.! Last week, we used a spinner w/ numbers 1-9 & played a counting on game/maze! #ECEchat
A5: As a preservice teacher in my sophomore year, I haven't had a ton of experience, but I plan on using manipulatives and having resources available to visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learners #ecechat
@MissChezick Thanks!
I love it and I do as a partnership and not as an evaluator. I am glad HMH has that policy. I see so many Ts grow and not be stressed out. #ecechat
Intertwine both interactive and hands-on instruction. Limit the paper driven task as much as possible. Let students build connections as tasks and skills are introduced.#ECEChat
A5: using movement, 5 senses, and connecting math to real-life experiences for these young students (places they go, items in their house, food they eat, etc.)! #ECEchat
A5: You have to differentiate!!! Those students that need that extra extra, those who need just a refresher and those who are ready to soar allows students to move appropriately. #ecechat
A4. Math can be taught everywhere! Take advantage of authentic opportunities for students to apply math skills and concepts. From counting their nature treasures to noticing shapes in the leaves to measuring animal tracks in the snow. #ECEChat
A5. By knowing the standards & where students are at, you can be intentional about embedding math concepts and practicing skills w/ what they are interested in doing. Last week a few of my Ss engaged in quite the discussion about addition problems w/ carrots during lunch #ECEChat
I like @PalomoLuisa's question. Looking at evidence-based math intervention for K-3 and were they successful. As someone here mention, they older kids suffer do to lack of conceptual skills #ecechat
