  • PalomoLuisa Jan 29 @ 9:39 PM EST
A1) we have common assessments created by our district after each chapter in our Go Math. We also do MAP 3x/year. Have an informal math screener that we use every 4-6 weeks (# identification, counting, etc.) Would love to learn about other assessments. #ecechat
  • MissChezick Jan 29 @ 9:39 PM EST
I love that you use teacher created benchmarks! They sound more student and teacher friendly! #ecechat

  • jghfoundation08 Jan 29 @ 9:45 PM EST
Good question @tinacruickshank . I am fairly new to Texas. I hope the other Texans in this chat can inform me too! #ecechat
  • TalkingWithTram Jan 29 @ 9:47 PM EST
A1: My district uses STAR math, ST Math, and number identification. In language therapy, I target several math concepts like biggest/smallest, bigger/smaller, first/next/last, more/less, etc. #ECEchat
  • MissChezick Jan 29 @ 9:47 PM EST
A2: One idea I would like to incorporate in my future classroom is having small group math interviews (the same few questions) with students of similar levels and writing notes to keep track fo their progress #ecechat
  • jghfoundation08 Jan 29 @ 9:47 PM EST
@PalomoLuisa I noticed that a lot of teachers here in Texas use "Go Math". I am more w/ the literacy side with the HMH and have not investigated it much. So it must be a comprehensive assessment. #ECEchat
#ecechat
  • PalomoLuisa Jan 29 @ 9:48 PM EST
A2) I keep a data binder w/ their ‘at a glance’ info & a portfolio of student work for each child. I’ve gotten into the habit of analyzing student work as we transition from whole group to small group so that I can make quick decisions about which Ss need reteaching. #ecechat
    • katyphinney Jan 29 @ 9:45 PM EST
Q2: How do you collect, organize, and analyze your students' math data? #ECEChat

  • assignmenthelp Jan 29 @ 9:50 PM EST
  • tinacruickshank Jan 29 @ 9:50 PM EST
A2. I keep a binder and each student has a tab for assessments. I also use google sheets and formatting to color code #ECEchat
  • TalkingWithTram Jan 29 @ 9:52 PM EST
A2: Individual or small group check-ins/assessments. Many teachers have a binder with tabs for different students or a folder for each student. For language therapy, each student has a folder with a goal sheet inside, I can easily track progress of concepts! #ECEchat
  • katyphinney Jan 29 @ 9:54 PM EST
Q3: What math goals are your students currently working towards? How do you engage parents in helping their child reach their math goal? #ECEchat
  • tinacruickshank Jan 29 @ 9:55 PM EST

A3: In my math class we are working with fractions right now. I hope to send home quick and engaging packets that require both the parent and student #ecechat
  • MarissaEby Jan 29 @ 9:56 PM EST
A3 My Ss are working to develop adding in basic word problems. I send home a weekly newsletter with examples of problems to work with their kids. #ECEchat
  • MissChezick Jan 29 @ 9:56 PM EST
A3: In my math class we are working with fractions right now. I hope to send home quick and engaging packets/ baggies that require both the parent and student to work together #ecechat
  • jghfoundation08 Jan 29 @ 9:56 PM EST
A2: @TalkingWithTram @tinacruickshank @PalomoLuisa In your math binders, do you have sheets that have specific categories that you can check quickly when you doing informal assessments? #ecechat
  • BlossJulie Jan 29 @ 9:57 PM EST
A3 Some general skills include # recognition, sequencing and patterning. Providing info to families w/ simple ways they can support learning at home is helpful. 🍎#ECEchat
  • TalkingWithTram Jan 29 @ 9:58 PM EST
A3: Goals include: number identification, counting, missing number, adding 2 one-digit numbers. We connect with our parents through @ClassDojo, demonstrate interventions on @Twitter, communicate at parent/teacher conferences, and send home extra practice! #ECEchat
  • jghfoundation08 Jan 29 @ 9:59 PM EST
A3: Monthly, we use to send home math games with all the parts and directions on manila folders. The Ss would color it, but the parent volunteers and para-educators would cut out the pieces. #ecechat Families loved it
  • RSwd53 Jan 29 @ 9:59 PM EST
Nope we use rubric style assessment s based on the standards and focus goals in IFD. #ECEchat

    In reply to @RSwd53
  • jghfoundation08 Jan 29 @ 10:02 PM EST
@MissChezick The only challenge was getting the coordination of the cut out and packaging committee. Many times it fell upon the teachers and it was overwhelming at times. But majority of the months it worked. #ecechat
  • katyphinney Jan 29 @ 10:03 PM EST
Q4: How are you helping your students to reach their math goals? What instructional practices, strategies, or materials are you using or recommend? #ECEchat
  • MissChezick Jan 29 @ 10:03 PM EST
That's so helpful, thank you! #ecechat

@TalkingWithTram Thanks. Sounds like a good assessment. #ecechat
    • TalkingWithTram Jan 29 @ 10:01 PM EST
At the kindergarten level, I know they have number ID, counting using 10s frames, basic concepts (bigger/smaller, more/less)... We also have missing number in older grades. I can check to see what all my building/district uses!

  • jghfoundation08 Jan 29 @ 10:06 PM EST
A4 I have seen the math problem of the day work really well at the lower level like at the upper grade. I was shock at their conceptual thinking #ecechat
  • MarissaEby Jan 29 @ 10:06 PM EST
A4 Daily we are working on different math story problems whole group and small groups I got from @prekinders. My kids are loving them and there are several skills and themes! #ECEchat
  • PalomoLuisa Jan 29 @ 10:07 PM EST

  • tinacruickshank Jan 29 @ 10:13 PM EST
A5. I think it really comes down to knowing where your kiddos are at. Then finding the pathway to their success #ECEchat
  • MissChezick Jan 29 @ 10:13 PM EST
A5: As a preservice teacher in my sophomore year, I haven't had a ton of experience, but I plan on using manipulatives and having resources available to visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learners #ecechat

    In reply to @tinacruickshank
  • jghfoundation08 Jan 29 @ 10:14 PM EST
@MissChezick Thanks! I love it and I do as a partnership and not as an evaluator. I am glad HMH has that policy. I see so many Ts grow and not be stressed out. #ecechat

Intertwine both interactive and hands-on instruction. Limit the paper driven task as much as possible. Let students build connections as tasks and skills are introduced.#ECEChat

  • ADutke Jan 29 @ 10:16 PM EST
A4. Math can be taught everywhere! Take advantage of authentic opportunities for students to apply math skills and concepts. From counting their nature treasures to noticing shapes in the leaves to measuring animal tracks in the snow. #ECEChat
  • RSwd53 Jan 29 @ 10:17 PM EST
    I agree completely. #ECEchat
    In reply to @jghfoundation08
  • PalomoLuisa Jan 29 @ 10:18 PM EST
A5). I’m curious if there are any evidence-based math interventions for our little ones (similar to LLI for literacy?) #ecechat
  • ADutke Jan 29 @ 10:19 PM EST
A5. By knowing the standards & where students are at, you can be intentional about embedding math concepts and practicing skills w/ what they are interested in doing. Last week a few of my Ss engaged in quite the discussion about addition problems w/ carrots during lunch #ECEChat
  • JeremyDBond Jan 29 @ 10:19 PM EST
