#2ndaryELA is a group of middle and high school English Language Arts teachers looking to share ideas and best practices. We chat every Tuesday night at 8 pm EST using #2ndaryELA. We'd love for you to join us!
A2 I included videos with songs in the hyperdocs, used activities online where students got immediate feedback, and silly sentences in Slides they had to edit #2ndaryela
A1: Both! But this year, a colleague & created a grammar pre/post test based on #CCSS & then gave students a “prescription” based on what they got wrong so they could work on specific grammar rules based on what they knew/didn’t know. #personalizelearning#2ndaryela
I am a Student Teacher, in my practicum right now. My mentor teacher does grammar as a separate aspect. She takes a day & we do different types of grammar worksheets. Also, she asks the students what they feel they need more work on & we spend time on that as well. #2ndaryELA
Exactly. We have PARCC tests and the writing rubric does not place any emphasis on using proper grammar. As long as their grammar doesn’t impact understanding what they wrote, then they earn credit. #2ndaryELA

We have our own test in FL - the FSA (Florida Standards Assessment) but it's the same with grammar - as long as it doesn't impact meaning...that's it. #2ndaryELA
A3: every grouping of student desks has a dictionary & I encourage them to look up random words or any word they come across that they don’t know. Otherwise, I teach vocabulary in the context of the piece we’re reading! #2ndaryela
A3: So this was supposed to be a goal of ours this year to do a better job with grammar. Words from texts that are Tier 2 vocab; words that are relevant to the reading and real life #2ndaryELA
A2: Sometimes we use the interactive white board and other times we read out loud during the class to ensure that each student is understanding the material. #2ndaryELA
A3: We do vocabulary usually when reading a novel. Like right now, we are reading a wonderful novel & have talked about a few vocab words that students might not understand that arise in the novel. #2ndaryELA
A3: I also experimented with a vocab program https://t.co/1kjg6ii4tU that had students practice with words from their novel and then compete in a game. They loved it! #2ndaryela
A4: I really enjoy a Vocabulary Rating Scale. I like to talk it out with students once they have finished & see how each student feels about each word. #2ndaryELA
A4 So do I! I've been left in charge of reviewing the vocab material with the students. I have found that it is most effective to turn the review into games, the students seem to enjoy it more. #2ndaryELA
A4: Actually, I answered Q4 as part of my A3...anyway https://t.co/1kjg6ii4tU is fun for the kids. Our district pays for the basic membership. #2ndaryela
A5: As a student teacher, I love being able to talk to my fellow student teachers and see what they are using for grammar and vocab to see if it would fit well for my lessons. #2ndaryELA
My students love the quizizz website. I can create “games” where they are challenged against each other to be the highest scorer! The website is highly interactive and gives entertaining feedback! #2ndaryELA
I’m enjoying incorporating my elementary resources into online resources to adapt them into a new document, activity, or PowerPoint. I’m hoping to add them to my TPT site! TeacherMommy7 #2ndaryELA
#2ndaryela I use quizlet. When I first read th enovel I pick out words from each chapter I think they will struggle with. About 10 words. I make a quizlet link. I use quizlet to create my test and I print them. Using quizlet allows me to adjust for SPED.
