#ALedchat Archive
#ALedchat is a weekly chat on Twitter about education topics. It is held each Monday from 9-10pmCST. While the discussion on #ALedchat continues on Twitter well beyond our weekly one-hour chat session, this platform affords us the opportunity to extend, expand and share the conversation with an even greater audience. Educators from across the state of Alabama, and the world, can come here to find encouragement, support, resources, professional growth opportunities and advice, while providing the same to their colleagues.

Q1 Define student engagement. What does it look like and what does it sound like?
Hello! Counting my takeaways with
RT Q1 Define student engagement. What does it look like and what does it sound like?
A1: could sound like and look like controlled chaos. That's when learning takes place.
A1: Engagement looks different in different settings. It is hard to define, but you know it when you see it.
A1: Engagement to me looks like students talking to each other about the content; questioning each other and trying to learn more.
A1 Students have taken control of the learning. It isn't always neat and quiet, engagement can be loud, messy and sometimes scary
A2: students having thoughtful conversations and Ts facilitating them.
5 agree, but in order to be intentional about it, how powerful would it be if a district defined it? https://t.co/TLE7mn2BSc
A1: Engagement looks different in different settings. It is hard to define, but you know it when you see it.
I agree that there is a lot of student discussion and participation.
A1: It's more than looking interested. The students know what the learning objective is, & they help create the path to get there.
A1: a roadmap to student learning that is organized chaos at times that encourages the Ss to think and continue to seek answers.
A1 it isn't quiet and when I meet their gaze and they're tuned in-you just know.
Looked like yall had really engaged teacher-learners today!
A1: Engagement is the active process of expanding knowledge.
Yes. We participated in PD activities today so that we could all get on the same page. Different in each setting.
I agree. I also have something for you in the morning https://t.co/syHQhP6X3V
A1 it isn't quiet and when I meet their gaze and they're tuned in-you just know.
We did. We stole some Expert Down the Hall ideas from my previous school :)
RT A! Students have taken control of the learning. << When they want to keep learning and OWN it, that's engagement!
A1Ss talking, debating, answering, questioning, sharing, leading, problem-solving, justifying, with each other.Has a myriad of sounds
Question 2 coming up in 1 min
RT I agree that there is a lot of student discussion and participation.
Much like our PD today.
A1: Ask students, Are you challenged?
A1) Awe-stricken eyes is a sign that you've just altered the thinking course. Chatter..noisy..questions.. https://t.co/oN9sCgSreA
Q1 Define student engagement. What does it look like and what does it sound like?
Yall are the true example of my quote: Being an educator is a lifestyle, not a job! :-)
Key differentiation here between engagement and just being in the room. Like this https://t.co/Fgip22nmaH
A1: It's more than looking interested. The students know what the learning objective is, & they help create the path to get there.
RT Yall are the true example of my quote: Being an educator is a lifestyle, not a job! :-)
A1:I think it would differ in different areas. It's keeping Ss bodies and minds actively engaged while they are learning.
A1: when the Ss have a better way of getting to the outcome and want to show you and everyone how to achieve it.
The gaze! Yes! https://t.co/fXDla8ZQIN
A1 it isn't quiet and when I meet their gaze and they're tuned in-you just know.
Q2 There is compliance & there is engagement. What is the diff between the compliant classroom & the truly cognitively engaged?
Wendy Rushing Haleyville 3rd grade teacher
A1: When Ss are engaged, they are invested in their learning. They are attentive, interested, and participating.
I appreciate this tweet! Signed, The Noisy Teacher in Rm 11
A2: compliance can be mundane and stagnant. Engagement will be hard to obtain when Ss are compliant.
A2:Compliance=well managed. Engaged=Ss seeking to gain knowledge through interaction w each other and new info.
A2: Compliance is doing what the teacher says- engagement is being an active participant in your learning.
A2 Compliant students follow direct out of respect/fear , engaged Ss run the show because they can't contain their excitement
A2 Compliant CRs are those where Ss just go through the motions. Ss in engaged CRs have an investment in their learning
Glad you are here tonight, Jayme!
Compliant Ss follow the rules & do the work, but may never truly engage w/the content. Learn it for the test then dump it.
A2) compliant audience cant wait to finish assignment to get Tr off their backs. Cog engaged wants 2 stay https://t.co/7ag8qp2ibO
Q2 There is compliance & there is engagement. What is the diff between the compliant classroom & the truly cognitively engaged?
A1 Engagement is when the students can tell you what their learning and why their learning it.
Love that you included students investing in their learning!
the real Q is how do we help our Ts reach engagement and step away from compliance.
sometimes, complaint has been the goal and not engagement. Engagement is the mountaintop https://t.co/8KulhNlV1f
A2:Compliance=well managed. Engaged=Ss seeking to gain knowledge through interaction w each other and new info.
:) Active learning is key in all environments.
RT A2) compliant audience cant wait to finish assignment to get Tr off their backs. Cog engaged wants 2 stay
A1: SE is student lead teacher facilitated learning where Ss are collaborating in the learning process. https://t.co/6qPZab3WJ2
Q1 Define student engagement. What does it look like and what does it sound like?
A2: Compliant often means students sitting on their hands, biting their tongues. playing the game
Love to see classrooms where Ss AND Ts can't contain their excitement.
Engagement is also hard to obtain if all the teacher wants is compliance.
A2- compliance is the following of rules; engagement is actually brain work. Sometimes engagement happens when compliance doesn't.
we get out what we put in. Some of my best classes were C classes https://t.co/NbqgyL7utH
Compliant Ss follow the rules & do the work, but may never truly engage w/the content. Learn it for the test then dump it.
A2:Compliance is going thru motions & doing enough to get by. Engagement is an active process where S r motivated to participate
A2: Ts can ask- Am I teaching or are students learning. Sometimes the difference is engagement.
A2 this question can be best answered as compliant=teacher led, engaged=student led classroom
Yep. They know how to "do school." MT A2: Compliant often means students sitting on their hands, biting their tongues
A2: also, compliance is often a teacher led thing while engagement is often student led.
Question 3 coming up in 1 min!
Agree! Glad you are here Coach!
That could be on two different levels. I agree though. I have seen it happen. When it does it is beautiful https://t.co/G7Kj8gGL09
the real Q is how do we help our Ts reach engagement and step away from compliance.
Genise, Administrator in Birmingham. Hello
True. Often non-compliance by a student is seen as being a rabble-rouser. We should want them to question things
Jornea Erwin, Alabama Technology in Motion Region 3 AAMU/UAH
Welcome, Jornea! Jump on in!
Hey Genise! Glad you're here! Jump on in!
Q3 Ss must believe they can learn b4 we can engage them, this includes overcoming failure. How do we develop confident, gritty Ss?
Like the lang of "student lead & teacher facilitated" here. Important that we know what this looks like in CRs
How often are we quilty of the same thing? https://t.co/xP9hQfvh2O
A2: Compliant often means students sitting on their hands, biting their tongues. playing the game
Not only does it allow for , it encourages it and the student demands it.
A2: compliant is doing what the T says with little student autonomy and cognitively engaged learning allows for stu. voice.
A3: Confidence begins with classroom climate & culture built on trust and respect.
A3) spoke abt this 2day..Kindness is the first & best lesson. Relationship trumps strategy. https://t.co/kn6RnwnrMl
Q3 Ss must believe they can learn b4 we can engage them, this includes overcoming failure. How do we develop confident, gritty Ss?
A3: As we have said before- allow student to fail forward & build come competitive spirit in students. attitude.
A4 Give them some autonomy first! Challenge them. Let them see their potential.
A3) Show each student that you believe in them and their potential. Let them know you have high expectations for them.
A3 Create a classroom environment where it's ok for to students fail and are forced to overcome failure early and often
A3: "Why do we fall Bruce? So we can learn to pick ourselves back up again" Always a lesson in failure.
Confidence is built by experiencing productive struggle. It's a great feeling to overcome difficulty.
A3: Ts must also know their Ss in order to build background & give support needed for success.
A1:Student engagement is Ss giving their attention to the learning tasks and self motivated to achieve the learning expectations
A3: Kids must have practice at "failing" & recovering. We have 2 resist making it easy for them, but support them in the process.
A3:It's up to the T to create a non threatening environment conducive for Ss learning. Our classroom is what we make it.
A3: T fosters the relationship, says things like "I believe in you", "We can do this"
A3: Clear expectations are key to building confidence. Ss must know what is key. Also, an encouraging word goes along way.
A3Ties into emotional lrning & providing effective feedback that Ss can use to learn lessons from mistakes to inform next attempts
A3: Know your Ss and create a safe learning environment to give them the confidence they need.
RT A3:It's up to the T to create a nonthreatening environment conducive for Ss learning. Our classroom is what we make it.
Well said! RT Confidence is built by experiencing productive struggle. It's a great feeling to overcome difficulty
A3 - What we hear repeatedly, we eventually believe! Ts must develop confidence & tell Ss what they can, but also will do!
A4: Celebrate failure and use the failure as a positive learning experience. https://t.co/3hXsHIiB1B
Q3 Ss must believe they can learn b4 we can engage them, this includes overcoming failure. How do we develop confident, gritty Ss?
Ts must also ask themselves..what do we do when the learn it? What do we do when they don't? Always have a
Absolutely! Language is powerful! It can empower or defeat!
Question 6 coming up in 1 min!
A3: The teacher has to be a "broken record" w/ a consistent message of moving forward w/o judgment.
A3: Celebrate failure and use the failure as a positive learning experience.
A3: Celebrate failure and use the failure as a positive learning experience.
Question 4 coming up in 1 min!
Right, Christy. We must be purposeful in establishing this foundation. Reaps many benefits as learning progresses
Loving me some scaffold! We're in the building-people business
I see this everyday in your classroom.
We learn more from failing than success. It's all how the experience is viewed.
- We must speak LIFE into our Ss. We believe in them even when they don't.
Q4 Studies say that "easy" lessons are not engaging to Ss. How do we cognitively challenge students & not destroy their grades?
A3: Ss also need to fail to see growth. Growth produces success.
HOw do they do that? (That is sort of what question 4 is asking) https://t.co/jKJVw3uBWo
A3:It's up to the T to create a non threatening environment conducive for Ss learning. Our classroom is what we make it.
- Ss aren't just our main focus, they're are ONLY customer!
What about directly teaching the concept of growth mindset--an intro unit at beginning of school yr? https://t.co/ogBzQXrrm2
A3: Kids must have practice at "failing" & recovering. We have 2 resist making it easy for them, but support them in the process.
A4 Make the learning about meeting individual student needs and not worry about where something fits in a grade book
A4: Create challenging lesson, but anticipate the road blocks and prepare for necessary scaffolding such as prompting & background
A2: Compliant when Ss respond to expectations determined by others. Engagement - Ss exercise personal commitment to participate.
A4: Ss must be pushed right to the edge of not knowing and then pulled back in. allows Ss to get comfortable with the unknown
RT A3: Ss also need to fail to see growth. Growth produces success. Agree, failure keeps us trying.
A4: Change our mindset. Allowing Ss to retake tests & redo assignments can allow Ss to meet a challenging goal and fail forward.
A3: Students have to be comfortable/open to keep trying even in failure. We learn by trying.
A4)Understand that mastery may not happen 1st time around. Give Ss many opps to learn difficult material https://t.co/bGgq2TSzrr
Q4 Studies say that "easy" lessons are not engaging to Ss. How do we cognitively challenge students & not destroy their grades?
A4: I believe we need to restructure "grading", develop success criteria and plan for meaningful ways for Ss to show learning.
Absolutely! The goal is student learning, not to catch them!
That is the https://t.co/LCTbm1vH6Y
A4: Ss must be pushed right to the edge of not knowing and then pulled back in. allows Ss to get comfortable with the unknown
A4: Grades based on process, not just answers. Ss given a chance to correct mistakes. Grades based on growth, not first attempt.
A4 - Depth of knowledge is key! Seeking levels that go way beyond knowledge acquisition! Relevance is key too!
A4) Scaffolding is key. Assist from start to finish. Use "easy" to build on..start w/the end in mind https://t.co/uI6FdFfciE
Q4 Studies say that "easy" lessons are not engaging to Ss. How do we cognitively challenge students & not destroy their grades?
A4We must know the current progression of our Ss lrning, design lessons in their ZPD,& prov scaffolding to assist in lrning gains
A4: Grading practices should reflect growth and mastery, embrace redos and retakes NOT one and done
A4: purposeful planning with content mastery at the forefront will appropriately challenge students https://t.co/bGKUx4BCdP
Q4 Studies say that "easy" lessons are not engaging to Ss. How do we cognitively challenge students & not destroy their grades?
A4) Not all upper level challenging assignments have to be formally assessed
A4: As a T, if my Ss failed to learn, the problem was with my teaching and not their learning!
YES! Kids don't automatically know about growth mindset. It also will create a common language for Ts & Ss.
Sometimes failure is where the learning occurs.
-Growth mindset is key! Should be utilized everyday to ensure continued progress. It's a paradigm shift!
A4:Build lessons w/anticipation of the outcome.Teach your Ss failure is ok.They always have chance to gain wisdom from the fall.
I believe in the process more and more the older that I get. We get out of life what we put in https://t.co/KNYQAYmTsr
A4: Grades based on process, not just answers. Ss given a chance to correct mistakes. Grades based on growth, not first attempt.
A4: Allowing for more open ended exploration and student driven learning. Ss will surprise you.

RT I believe in the process more and more the older that I get. We get out of life what we put in Amen
Q5 What technology structures are in place to engage students in responding to questions & provide formative feedback in school?
-Anticipation is key, esp when increasing the DOK to multiple answers! Knowing probs before they happen is best practice.
Yes they will! 2 of our Alg Ts are piloting & the Ts say that all the time!
Right, Ronda. Ties into S exploration and designing their own questions based on new discoveries
A5: We used a collaborative Google Doc today in PD where everyone could respond. Great way to hear all voices.
A5: I use the polling option in Google Classroom, is amazing, tweetchat to allow synthesis. A lot of options
So true. Can we use engagement as a measurement? If yes, how?
A5: Our 3-5 use clickers for formative asmt and love them. We use Stride for progress monitoring of standard mastery.
AMEN! And always focus on "what's next"
A5: We use all things Google..works really well... https://t.co/NlEQsWybq6
Q5 What technology structures are in place to engage students in responding to questions & provide formative feedback in school?
We would have to have some sort of product to gauge learning and understanding. Good question!
Fully believe in the power of revision! It establishes a higher level of expectations 4 the learning env. https://t.co/gv8cDTaeDo
A4: Change our mindset. Allowing Ss to retake tests & redo assignments can allow Ss to meet a challenging goal and fail forward.
Yes. Opportunities for growth must be given to Ss.
A5: many schools are utilizing (immediate, provides Ss feedback & data) , for technology formative assessments
A5: Our 4th grade math classes have dry erase tables. Great way for Ts to see their thought processes.
A5 Our teachers use Kahoot, socrative, clickers, and plickers pretty regularly
Also great to use to reference key points in later meetings as we move forward in our professional learning
A5: We are a GAFE school, so collaborating with Google is awesome!
A5: Each week my Ss use Stride Academy during technology centers. I get feedback emailed to me on individual Ss.
Many of our teachers use Kahoot too!
A5: Kahoot, Google Docs, Socrative, Quizizz, Nearpod, etc. The possibilities are endless.
In our PD session today, we used Todays Meet. Great way to see everyone's thinking.
A5:I like to use Plickers. It is based on QR codes. My Ss love these! It gives the T instant feedback.

A6) Imperative that content be relevant to their lives. https://t.co/cSh2D0w6Ty
Q6 How can teachers move instruction beyond a focus on facts (remember level thinking) to higher levels of cognitive processing?
They are grand. Pluckers allow us to expose our fun side.
A6:Each week, we present a concept question & have Ss discuss with partners b4 it is discussed whole group. I'm often impressed.
Docs, Sheets, Slides, Forms... (plus others, but mainly google)
A6 Problem based learning, STEM challenges, passion projects provide engaging scenarios centered around the process of learning
I think it's important that no matter the tool or app, it's how you use it to determine if formative assessment is taking place.
tell us more about passion projects https://t.co/pHLy7euFvm
A6 Problem based learning, STEM challenges, passion projects provide engaging scenarios centered around the process of learning
A6:Make units cross curricular. It creates a connection for Ss. They learn to apply the facts learned to other subjects.
- Open-ended responses truly allow Ts to garner each Ss level of knowledge acquisition & application!
A6The use of Quality Qs & designing inquiry based lessons that facilitate a departure from memorization, one word answers etc
It's a great way to determine S misconceptions as well.
Tech has to be more than "Nice Shiny Tools" https://t.co/nQ0n4IvAwx
I think it's important that no matter the tool or app, it's how you use it to determine if formative assessment is taking place.
A6: Allowing student input, STEAM, PBL, collaborative lessons between disciplines, solving real world issues.
Question 7 coming up in 1 min!
Good suggestion. How about a product that measures the amount of time that students/groups spend solving a problem.
A6 Passion Projects: Aka Genius Hour: students pursue whatever they wish to create whatever they'd like to demo learning
A6: Ts should plan their questions to hit all levels of DOK and differentiate for Ss
A6: We use inquiry based learning in Science for learning that is student directed.
A6: Ask the question "So what?" Why is this relevant? Why is it important?
A6: using UbD by will help with backwards planning to achieve the high cognitive demands of the standards.
A5 - Plickers, kahoot.it, Google forms, socrative, padlet, polls everywhere, & the list is endless!
Q7 Much research places Teachers @ the heart of engagement. How do you build relationships w/ Ss to show them that you care?
Andrew (professional thinker) popping in on +preparing presentation for Sat's conf; homework just finished.
A6 PBL that uses real-life examples helps to take learning to the next level when Ss have to problem-solve & apply learning.
gotcha. Ive heard of genius hour. I get it. Thanks https://t.co/6Ryr1cMqVQ
A6 Passion Projects: Aka Genius Hour: students pursue whatever they wish to create whatever they'd like to demo learning
A5 - Google docs, sheets, & slides also serve great collaborative purposes for Ss!
A7: Include student voice and choice in your planning. This allows ownership in learning and makes it more student led.
Welcome, Andrew! What's your topic on Saturday?
A7: It has to be evident that the T has invested time in the S and lesson for Ss to buy in and invest too.
RT We discussed this today! Yes, we did. Awesome how everyone tied things together.
RT We discussed this today! Yes, we did. Awesome how everyone tied things together.
Teachers have to be okay with answering, "I don't know" then finding out!
Right, Christine. Essential that we are purposeful in incorporating DOK 3 & 4 across the curriculum
A6: Learning opportunities that demand S exploration, divergent thinking, prompts problem solving ,allows open-ended responses.
A7: Show up and be present in their lives. We may be the only ones who are.
A6: PBL is a perfect answer allowing Ss and Ts to dig deeper and provides real world applications. https://t.co/4uPMorsLFI
Q6 How can teachers move instruction beyond a focus on facts (remember level thinking) to higher levels of cognitive processing?
A7: Asking questions about them and letting them see it show up in their learning. https://t.co/Dbwcy4GlGB
Q7 Much research places Teachers @ the heart of engagement. How do you build relationships w/ Ss to show them that you care?
A7) You meet 'em where they are. Commit to their development from day 1.
Bring it! Every day! cc
https://t.co/4jdREo1TsF
Q7 Much research places Teachers @ the heart of engagement. How do you build relationships w/ Ss to show them that you care?
- Stride Academy is a great standards-assessment to give a full picture of what students do & don't know!
A7:Attend their extra curricular activities so that they see that I care about their academics as well as their other activities.
A7: be real, get to know them and allow them to get to know you. Personal stories are great and stay with kids for a lifetime
A7: Find out what's important to the Ss. Believe in them. Love them. Want the best for them. Avoid shame. Avoid sarcasm.
- Thx for ! That's a new one for me! Makes tonight's chat worth it for that! 😃
RT A7: Show up and be present in their lives. We may be the only ones who are. Great example is sports.
RT A7: Show up and be present in their lives. We may be the only ones who are. Great example is sports.
A7: Details. You remember details about people you care about. So remember the details your students share with you re: themselves
Never be afraid to tell them that you love them! They need to hear it!
A7: Get to know your students-not casually, but intentionally. Once they know you have their back, everything else falls into place.
A7: Focus on what's important, commit to it, and invest in them!
A7: Listen, get them involved, show them that we are all learning and make mistakes. Join in the work.
A7 Be purposeful about celebrating S successes. Ss are aware of who and how often people support them.
A7:Give them a choice in centers, units of study, etc. Ss are more engaged and attentive when they choose. We all learn differently.
A7: Take an interest in things they are interested in, notice S efforts, celebrate success, never underestimate value of a smile
A7 Genuine TIME spent building relationships...Just being REAL Hi Guys! 😉
A6 - I think the key is using depth of knowledge, primarily level 3 to ensure knowledge acquisition, but also application!
Hey Daisy! Glad you are here!
Question 8 coming up in 1 min!
A7: Be willing to change! What worked before may not work this year!
A7:Engage in the fun. Know the Ss likes, interests and create activities that warrant relationship building. Actions speak loudly
Hey Daisy! Thanks for stopping in!
A7: If Ss have a voice in the learning process it builds collaboration allowing strong learning bonds. https://t.co/rzK4gWcqOE
Q7 Much research places Teachers @ the heart of engagement. How do you build relationships w/ Ss to show them that you care?
Q8 "Engage me or enrage me" is an article about Ss voice to & what engages them. What are your most engaging activity for Ss?
- Relevance is paramount! When students know the why, they then care abt the who, what, where, & when!
A7: Let them know that they are of value to you, let them know that you are learning from them as well.
They sure are! They pay CLOSE attention to who's getting the attention!
start with the why https://t.co/hZscKpM9Kf
- Relevance is paramount! When students know the why, they then care abt the who, what, where, & when!
"I started doing my best when my teacher told me 'trust me kid, it's for your own good' ... said no student ever.
A7: Be real. Be sincere! Students feel sincerity! Meet them where they are.
A7: Always listen to your Ss. Let them know u love them always!
Q8 is on a quick hook. Just trying to find some go to strats
You never know what they are going through ;)
Yes!!! Just using it/saying we've got it doesn't ensure quality tchg/learning! It's a means to the end! https://t.co/8fcSGNSCjI
Tech has to be more than "Nice Shiny Tools" https://t.co/nQ0n4IvAwx
I think it's important that no matter the tool or app, it's how you use it to determine if formative assessment is taking place.
A8: There is no middle ground..engage or enrage..move forward or backward..hook them or lose them..
A8 Authenticity- that's #1 engagement starter
Artificial intelligences that respond to students and provide feedback in real time already exist. But they can't love and you can
A8:Whole brain teaching strategies, partner talk, action cup (they love this), chants and cheers, student-directed experiments.
A8, A lot of times, the most interesting topic is what Ts show the most enthusiasm about.
The best thing I have heard, maybe EVER! Love!
Final question coming up in 1 min!
A8: most engaging is when students have a voice, collaborate with others and when they realize their own learning is happening
A8: kahoot activities for review has shown to be very engaging in my school. Ss get into the competition and data is displayed.
A7 - Being genuine, present, & honest with Ss lays a foundation for caring relationships! Give Ss whatever you expect in return!
FQ Dr.King said, Intelligence plus character is the true goal of education. What did you learn tonite to help you reach that goal?
A8: Have them actively move around. Students LOVE any opportunity to get out of their seats! :)
A8: Activities that arrest student interest and afford students a high degree of personal control and autonomy always win.
- Student choice & voice, not only builds relationships, but often defines relevance too!
FA: I was reminded that loving kids and building relationships is the foundation of engagement- No app for that!
FA: The goal is to develop great citizens and thinkers. It's not to create robots which spout facts.

FA before we can get to congnitive needs, we must address the affective domain. They dont care how much you know till...
FA:It is about a connection b/t Ss and Ts. We must make the effort w/ our heads & our hearts to reach them, then we can teach them
-The culture enlarges, Ss engage, & learning becomes stalwart focus when Ts admit not knowing it all!
FA We must love our students, hold them to high standards, and support them when they fail.
