  • HeculuckDave Dec 13 @ 9:16 PM EST
Dave in Lloyd... turkey dinner tonight with Jenn’s U of A ATEP Ed program so I’ll be in and out. #saskedchat
  • kfidelack Dec 13 @ 9:16 PM EST
This is something our division is exploring. Ts will do better work when they are interested and motivated to do the work. Putting Ts in mandatory PLCs just to cover that base isn't best practice. #saskedchat
    In reply to @KelliWhite6
  • MrBourassaED Dec 13 @ 9:17 PM EST

    In reply to @MrALongstaff

    In reply to @kfidelack, @KelliWhite6
  • FNGraham - Moderator Dec 13 @ 9:20 PM EST
Agreed. This great "can-do, will-do" attitude goes a long way in building a professional community of learners. #saskedchat
    • Nicole_Towriss Dec 13 @ 9:09 PM EST
When I learn something new and then see positive results, I’m encouraged to keep learning and strengthening my practices!

  • FbellomoB Dec 13 @ 9:20 PM EST
A3. Team approach, all our kids, sharing of our ideas, shared goals. #saskedchat
    In reply to @kellywchris
  • KelliWhite6 Dec 13 @ 9:21 PM EST
A3: PLCs are essential to push us to keep putting ourselves in the role & mindset of a learner. Helps us stay current with latest best practices. #saskedchat
  • technolandy Dec 13 @ 9:21 PM EST
A3 a good time to chat pedagogy, identify an area to focus some attention on, design an intervention and see what happens.....hmmm kinda like inquiry....! #saskedchat
  • MrALongstaff Dec 13 @ 9:21 PM EST
A3 PLC’s are important so you aren’t alone. Just like our #saskedchat PLN, they provide a chance for reflection, learning new strategies, pushing your limits and working with new people.
  • kfidelack Dec 13 @ 9:21 PM EST
A3: To constantly evolve and improve in order to ensure best practice that supports our diverse learners' needs. To support the idea that teachers are always learning and growing professionally. To prevent stagnation. #saskedchat
  • TerelyneV Dec 13 @ 9:21 PM EST
As long as data doesn't become the primary focus. I've experienced this and it's not productive overall. #saskedchat
    In reply to @FbellomoB, @kellywchris
  • wesaquje Dec 13 @ 9:21 PM EST
A3: I think PLCs are important for teachers because it is a place for great professional development. #saskedchat
  • kellywchris Dec 13 @ 9:22 PM EST
Welcome to #saskedchat @PrincipalSmart @FNGraham @MrBourassaED! So great of you to take time to join us and share with us! Thank you!
  • FNGraham - Moderator Dec 13 @ 9:22 PM EST
A1: My vision of PLC work is teachers working together on an area of interest & value where the goal is shared by all, strengthening practice & creating results. #saskedchat
  • Nicole_Towriss Dec 13 @ 9:23 PM EST
#saskedchat I agree completely! This also leads into the question about collaboration versus collegiality.
    In reply to @technolandy
  • technolandy Dec 13 @ 9:23 PM EST
Also a good response for A3 - by having a rotating chair (and changing reporter) everyone gets a turn to practice some leadership! #saskedchat
    In reply to @kellywchris
  • kellywchris Dec 13 @ 9:24 PM EST
Welcome to #saskedchat @HeculuckDave - hope that turkey doesn't make you too drowsy!
  • kellywchris Dec 13 @ 9:24 PM EST
Totally agree. Having PLCs needs to be driven by teachers working together toward common goals. #saskedchat

The whole child is usually not found in just the data alone. #saskedchat
    In reply to @TerelyneV, @kellywchris
  • FNGraham - Moderator Dec 13 @ 9:26 PM EST
Really love the our kids vs my kids sentiment. Truly a key to effective PLC work. #saskedchat
    In reply to @FbellomoB, @kellywchris
  • kellywchris Dec 13 @ 9:26 PM EST
Q4. How does the work done by teachers within PLCs support students learning and improvement? #saskedchat
  • kellywchris Dec 13 @ 9:26 PM EST
Ah - glad you spotted that! PLCs are truly effective when we collaborate - give all a voice and aren't afraid to question ideas and make suggestions - it's about the best ideas going forward not who suggested the ideas. #saskedchat
    In reply to @Nicole_Towriss, @technolandy
  • kfidelack Dec 13 @ 9:26 PM EST
A4: How does it not?! Better teachers = better learning for students. #saskedchat
  • FbellomoB Dec 13 @ 9:28 PM EST
We should want to help each other. It’s our school. Our kids. Our family. #saskedchat
    In reply to @FNGraham, @kellywchris
  • kellywchris Dec 13 @ 9:28 PM EST
Totally agree! Data is just one way to help in moving things forward but there are many different types of 'data' and it's also important to question what a 'data set' is showing AND not showing. #saskedchat
    In reply to @TerelyneV, @FbellomoB
  • FNGraham - Moderator Dec 13 @ 9:28 PM EST
    A2: Motivated, driven, focused, collaborative & fun...with snacks. #saskedchat
  • KelliWhite6 Dec 13 @ 9:28 PM EST
A4: Ss learning is impacted when they see their teacher being a lifelong learner and trying out ideas and lessons in an effort to stay relevant. You get what you model! #saskedchat
  • Nicole_Towriss Dec 13 @ 9:29 PM EST
I find learning is energizing. It’s like exercise in my opinion; it seems like it’s going to take energy you don’t have to complete it but you end up feeling refreshed and happy once you get into it. #saskedchat
    In reply to @kfidelack
  • TerelyneV Dec 13 @ 9:29 PM EST
A3. Teaching can be lonely, and a PLC makes you feel you're not toiling alone. It's also an effective way of getting a group on the same page with a specific piece of knowledge or practice. #saskedchat
  • PrincipalSmart - Moderator Dec 13 @ 9:29 PM EST
A4 The intent of PLCs in my mind is is to work together to improve our teaching by craft in some way. That benefits students big time. #saskedchat
  • FbellomoB Dec 13 @ 9:29 PM EST
Show me something the data says and I’ll show you a few more things about the child the data doesn’t show. #saskedchat
    In reply to @kellywchris, @TerelyneV
  • kellywchris Dec 13 @ 9:30 PM EST
I see what you did there! Nice move to get that #saskedchat PLN in there! Well done!
    In reply to @MrALongstaff
  • FNGraham - Moderator Dec 13 @ 9:30 PM EST
In our school this year, all teachers formed their own PLCs based on interest & perceived areas of desired growth. No mandating. #saskedchat
    In reply to @kfidelack, @KelliWhite6
  • wesaquje Dec 13 @ 9:31 PM EST
A4: PLCs give you ideas and lessons for your own classroom. Often ready-to-use ideas that have been successful in other classrooms. #saskedchat
  • kellywchris Dec 13 @ 9:32 PM EST
A4 - working together helps us to not only share ideas and support one another but to also helps us to question what we are doing and focus on supporting student learning and growth. It should involve us asking "Is this the best way to go?" #saskedchat
  • kellywchris Dec 13 @ 9:33 PM EST
Q5. Why is Collaboration, and not just Collegiality, important for successful PLCs? #saskedchat
  • Nicole_Towriss Dec 13 @ 9:33 PM EST
I couldn’t agree more. As a Learning Support Teacher this can be a frustrating piece of the PLC puzzle for me. Data can be so helpful and yet also so misleading if you’re not thoughtful. #saskedchat
    In reply to @FbellomoB, @kellywchris, @TerelyneV
  • kellywchris Dec 13 @ 9:33 PM EST
That's great. All should be given the opportunity to lead - and the challenge to lead and help others to grow and develop. #saskedchat
    In reply to @KelliWhite6, @technolandy
  • TerelyneV Dec 13 @ 9:34 PM EST
A4. Because PLCs build on collaboration and team work, they are beneficial to building a positive school culture where learning and trying to be better is valued. Students are undoubtedly affected. #saskedchat
  • kellywchris Dec 13 @ 9:34 PM EST
Our kids, our school, our community - we're in this together! #saskedchat
    In reply to @FNGraham, @FbellomoB
  • kfidelack Dec 13 @ 9:34 PM EST
A5: You can be collegial, but isolated. Collaboration involves physically working together! I believe someone already pointed out this fact. #saskedchat
  • TerelyneV Dec 13 @ 9:35 PM EST
    Yes to snacks! #saskedchat
    In reply to @FNGraham
  • MrALongstaff Dec 13 @ 9:35 PM EST
A4 allowing Ts to share their strengths helping those around them to improve = long life learning with supports #saskedchat
  • FNGraham - Moderator Dec 13 @ 9:35 PM EST
They set their own meeting times when it works for them. Used to have scheduled times but flexibility works for us. Can meet more often or less dependent on actions. #saskedchat
    In reply to @kfidelack, @KelliWhite6
  • kellywchris Dec 13 @ 9:35 PM EST
Anther busy #saskedchat - I just got a "Show More" sign which means I'm now about 5 minutes behind in my scrolling and may have missed saying welcome to someone! #saskedchat
  • wesaquje Dec 13 @ 9:36 PM EST
A5: Collaboration is what allows teachers to support each other’s work. #saskedchat
  • TerelyneV Dec 13 @ 9:36 PM EST
Kinda like #saskedchat. It seems as though I don't have energy for it on Thursday night, but I'm always refreshed and energized when it's done!
    In reply to @Nicole_Towriss, @kfidelack
  • KelliWhite6 Dec 13 @ 9:36 PM EST
A5: FEEDBACK makes the difference. Not there to pat each other’s backs (although, by nature, we do this to some extent) the collaboration is about supporting each other’s growth and pushing ourselves. #saskedchat
  • MrALongstaff Dec 13 @ 9:38 PM EST
A5 #repeatA4 support in improving yourself with others strengths and sharing your own voice to meet a common goal #saskedchat
  • kellywchris Dec 13 @ 9:39 PM EST
This is from Richard DuFour a while ago but captures the essence of What is a Professional Learning Community? https://t.co/Gw2NWMbEDe¢.aspx #saskedchat
  • TerelyneV Dec 13 @ 9:39 PM EST
A5. Collegiality is polite. Collaboration is honest. Collaboration involves moving forward on learning that might be hard for the individuals or the group. #saskedchat
  • kellywchris Dec 13 @ 9:40 PM EST
Q6. How can schools involve the community in what they are doing in PLCs? #saskedchat
  • mrchadklein Dec 13 @ 9:42 PM EST
A5: because one has to be able to be challenged & be willing to grow; collegiality to me means be nice and no ruffling feathers -smoke&wave #saskedchat
  • kellywchris Dec 13 @ 9:42 PM EST
Totally agree - we need to be able to be honest about what we are doing and be willing to seek out opportunities to get feedback from others, reflect upon it, make changes and seek more feedback. #saskedchat
    In reply to @TerelyneV
  • Nicole_Towriss Dec 13 @ 9:42 PM EST
A6. Just as we utilize each other’s strengths to support the group in PLC’s, we need to utilize the strengths within our community to support our goals and growth as well! #saskedchat
  • MrALongstaff Dec 13 @ 9:43 PM EST
A6 our admin shares our Learning Improvement Plan with SCC, we plan to meet LIP goals and parents support our planning with resources #saskedchat
  • kellywchris Dec 13 @ 9:44 PM EST
This is from 2012 but has some great resources embedded in the article on PLCs - https://t.co/3JVcb3GX5j #saskedchat
  • wesaquje Dec 13 @ 9:44 PM EST
A6: Include the community - they know what they want for their community. #saskedchat
  • technolandy Dec 13 @ 9:44 PM EST
A6 communicating out is always complex. Translating “teacher talk” - especially when making changes - ie from report cards to eportfolios - is important #saskedchat
  • kellywchris Dec 13 @ 9:45 PM EST
#saskedchat is getting ready for the upcoming year and we need your help! Please take a moment to offer a few suggestions for upcoming chats. It helps us to meet your needs as educators. https://t.co/llmmD3ZgNI
  • kellywchris Dec 13 @ 9:45 PM EST
We had our SCC join our PLC planning meetings and see what we were doing in the school. It really helped them to be able to explain what we were doing and what we were working towards. #saskedchat
  • kellywchris Dec 13 @ 9:46 PM EST
Welcome to #saskedchat @mrchadklein - so absolutely wonderful of you to join us and share with us!! Thank you so very much!
  • kellywchris Dec 13 @ 9:47 PM EST
Q7. How can PLCs help teachers in supporting Reconciliation, Inclusiveness, and changing school culture about learning? #saskedchat
  • kellywchris Dec 13 @ 9:47 PM EST
Q8. How can divisions/ administrators support teachers in creating/maintaining authentic PLCs? #saskedchat
  • Nicole_Towriss Dec 13 @ 9:47 PM EST
Same in our school. I think there’s value in asking the SCC members how they can and how they’re willing to support our work. Maybe they can be a resource themselves based on their experiences, their training, etc. #saskedchat
    In reply to @MrALongstaff
  • mrchadklein Dec 13 @ 9:49 PM EST
A6: If there’s a connection to an information need/insight from another expert then inviting community adds to learning growth. I’ve done this w/@ItweetMatrix Jonas Fenn for hands-on science #saskedchat #reallifesciencerocks
  • kfidelack Dec 13 @ 9:50 PM EST
A8: Give Ts time to discuss their interests and passions in order to form like-minded PLC groups. Review PLC work periodically to ensure it is still relevant and successful; offer feedback and suggestions for future directions. #saskedchat
  • kellywchris Dec 13 @ 9:50 PM EST
Q8. How can divisions/ administrators support teachers in creating/maintaining authentic PLCs? #saskedchat
  • TerelyneV Dec 13 @ 9:51 PM EST
Q8. I think @FNGraham has already mentioned several great ways to have authentic PLCs: teacher choice of focus, flexible time, try not to mandate. #saskedchat
  • FNGraham - Moderator Dec 13 @ 9:51 PM EST
Sorry #saskedchat must run. Trying to prep meetings for tomorrow.
  • Nicole_Towriss Dec 13 @ 9:52 PM EST
A8. @FNGraham provides the snacks! But seriously, provide choice and flexibility. It works when we do it for students, it will help motivate and engage adults too! #saskedchat
  • kfidelack Dec 13 @ 9:52 PM EST
One concept our staff recently explored was PLC "Sprints." These are short-term PLCs that focus on a very specific target to improve student learning. This format has seen success because it is quick and to-the-point, rather than dragging out a PLC all year long #saskedchat
  • MrALongstaff Dec 13 @ 9:52 PM EST
A8 resources for allowing Ts to network/plan like going to @Skmiddleyears conference and scheduling common assessment time #saskedchat
  • kfidelack Dec 13 @ 9:53 PM EST
PLC Sprints also offer a chance to change things up if one concept is tackled and new interests emerge. Allows PLC process to be "Evergreen." #saskedchat
  • TerelyneV Dec 13 @ 9:53 PM EST
    I love this idea! #saskedchat
    In reply to @kfidelack
  • kellywchris Dec 13 @ 9:54 PM EST
TA - How can you share ideas about PLCs and/or support the development of authentic PLCs within your school/division? #saskedchat
  • kellywchris Dec 13 @ 9:54 PM EST
Well #saskedchat has crashed my @tweetdeck and I’m reduced to using my phone! You people are AWESOME!
  • KelliWhite6 Dec 13 @ 9:55 PM EST
In our division every school has a designated LF: learning facilitator who gets time to support the adult learners a period or more a day. They can cover classes so Ts can do visits and support each other. They can give direct support themselves. LFs get very creative #saskedchat
  • FNGraham - Moderator Dec 13 @ 9:55 PM EST
We have this built into our flexible model too. Recently a tech focused group met their goal, disbanded, & members formed or joined new PLCs. #saskedchat
    In reply to @TerelyneV, @kfidelack
  • kfidelack Dec 13 @ 9:57 PM EST
TA: Continue to explore PLC work in my practice and be honest with admin about what is/isn't working #saskedchat

Well I've been through so many years of ineffective ones...just considered all the ways to avoid the "blahs!" #saskedchat
    In reply to @kfidelack, @TerelyneV
  • Nicole_Towriss Dec 13 @ 9:58 PM EST
Great idea! We have something similar though I don’t remember their latest title/acronym. They work w staff to try new resources, co-plan, model new strategies, etc.#saskedchat
