Hello #122edchat!
Melissa from NY here.
I’ve stepped away from chats for a bit to focus on myself and some projects, but had to come back for this epic chat.
Missed my family!
Another great night of multi-tweeting. Hello #122edchat and #LastingLearning families. Steph Dill elementary SPED T in Colorado. Happy to be with you all tonight!
#122edchat hi Aprajita Ralli from India here and I take the secondary School students for history. I also look at the community service program for the middle school
Q1: Murphy’s Law seems to launch full force for teachers every now and then. What is your go-to activity or strategy when a lesson (or entire day!) doesn’t go according to plan? #122edchat
A1-I feel like this happens to everyone, even at the administrative level. At PD, we take a short break and start something new. As a teacher, we used to take a short break with physical activity to try and get back on track. #122edchat
A1: We've had quite a few internet-is-down days this year, which is hard when I'm teaching a Digital Skills class! I keep Jenga & Apples to Apples on hand for emergency situations, but I also like to take those moments to just talk with my kids. #122edchat
A1: Turn the lesson into a teachable moment. Take a moment to pause, discuss what's happening, & reflect so we can move forward. Honesty is the best policy-when we share our "misses" with our Ss they see that we too make mistakes and that taking risks are encouraged #122edchat
Yelllllllllooooooooowwwwwwwwwww!!!! I’m Kristen from PA! I can’t stop falling out of my chair at school. I teach 6th grade science. Today was 5 times. It might be my next #STEAM challenge. Design a new chair that I won’t fall out of. That, or a new tiara design.#122edchat

A1 Take a breath and take a step back. It most likely wasn’t a total loss, so you need to triage and decide where to put your time into first. And have a Plan B or at least a Plan A(ish) #122edchat
Noa from Israel. Good morning everyone! I work in the Innovative Tech Unit in the Israeli Ministry of Education. @yoram, if you're free, we'd love your input on innovation! #122edchat
Q1: Murphy’s Law seems to launch full force for teachers every now and then. What is your go-to activity or strategy when a lesson (or entire day!) doesn’t go according to plan? #122edchat
A1: For my CAD and Robotics classes I always had some personal choice project on standby as well as some fun offline activities as a plan C.
#122edchat
A1: Happened earlier this year. We lost the Internet, but were still able to function. We used the day to showcase @KerbalSpaceP and @koduteam for our Ss as alternative engagement activities. This failure actually forced us to create new curriculum options we now use. #122edchat
RT Q1: Murphy’s Law seems to launch full force for teachers every now and then. What is your go-to activity or strategy when a lesson (or entire day!) doesn’t go according to plan? #122edchat
A1: Teaching is all about being flexible with the learning process and its outcome. Since my instructional decisions are based on my students' learning skills and their experiences, I am always flexible about adapting to their needs. #122edchat
Q1: Murphy’s Law seems to launch full force for teachers every now and then. What is your go-to activity or strategy when a lesson (or entire day!) doesn’t go according to plan? #122edchat
A1 If something goes awry, it’s usually tech, so we have things called ‘pencils’ & ‘paper’ & ‘books’, lol. The value of being a digi-immigrant and 21 years in is that know how to teach with no tech, low tech, or high tech. The kids always have a good book next to them. #122edchat
Q1: Murphy’s Law seems to launch full force for teachers every now and then. What is your go-to activity or strategy when a lesson (or entire day!) doesn’t go according to plan? #122edchat
#122edchat A1: A read aloud and discussion for low tech. Or an alphabet list and story. For high tech, a quizlet or Kahoot review activity. Murphy’s Law seems to be a real thing!
A1 I am no longer a classroom teacher but the first thing to do is OWN it and just know it happens. This is a great opportunity to let Ss show you what they can do and allow their voice and choices to be heard. #122edchat
A1: My go to when things aren't going well - review! My small groups always need review. For my littlest littles I pull out phonemic awareness activities. My older littles like them too - they just get through them faster. #122edchat
A1: My main strategy is to embrace it. Sometimes it’s the universe’s way to show you that you need to shake it up. Take a chance, introduce movement, laughter, and fun. #122edchat
Q1: Murphy’s Law seems to launch full force for teachers every now and then. What is your go-to activity or strategy when a lesson (or entire day!) doesn’t go according to plan? #122edchat
A1-I like a great picture book -read, discuss, and write about it!! So many great lessons from a great kids book. Middle schoolers love them. #122edchat
A1: Well, from 8-3, I grab all of the knowledge in my brain & think about what the kids need. I create something on the fly. From 5-10, well I turn to red 🍷! 🤗#122edchat
A1: I like to give the kids an opportunity to share or open it up to discussion. Sometimes they’re able to explain something in a way that helps their peers understand, even if I can’t make it work #122edchat
A1: Great opportunity for some authentic problem-solving! No better way to model the iterative process as well as the attitude that we need to learn from our mistakes and grow! #122edchat
A1
BRAIN BREAK!!!
We have a nature trail so I would sometimes take my science students outside just to take a break look at nature go on a scavenger hunt even when it's cold outside look at nature! Recharge your batteries! #122edchat
A1: Turn the lesson into a teachable moment. Take a moment to pause, discuss what's happening, & reflect so we can move forward. Honesty is the best policy-when we share our "misses" with our Ss they see that we too make mistakes and that taking risks are encouraged #122edchat
No matter how long you have been doing it you won’t like it when it falls apart! Just know it happens and own that and be flexible enough to learn from it and use that time to give your student choice and show you what they have learned. #122edchat
I have def been guilty of that, but now I just roll with it. The advantage of Edtech is that sometimes you just have to pivot or make a small change to get where you need to be. #122edchat
A1- Luckily, as I gained more experience in the classroom, I could anticipate when these issues would arise so I wouldn’t have to lose instructional time. When things don’t go as planned in the classroom and you need time to reset, @ProdigyGame is a good fallback #122edchat
A1 BRING OUT THE CARD GAMES! In my math class if a lesson goes south, I bring out cards or dice and teach the kids games. I love teaching them early in the year because my kids will play them after they are done with their work! #122edchat
A1 If I see that it's not going to work, I back-up hit some GoNoodle while we all regroup. If it's my delivery, I'll change it up or break it down for them in a different way. If it's boredom, I'll get off my lecture box and include them in the topic. #122edchat
Q1: Murphy’s Law seems to launch full force for teachers every now and then. What is your go-to activity or strategy when a lesson (or entire day!) doesn’t go according to plan? #122edchat
A2: My ELA department is the best! I have three awesome colleagues who are great friends and supporters for my teaching experience. I can't imagine myself growing as a teacher without their mentorship and cheery support! ☺#122edchat
Reflection is so essential. This is something that has impacted me the most in my career. I can learn from my mistakes. Thankful to be able to reflect weekly with @MrPStrunk in #waledchat. #122edchat
A1 Sometimes you have to punt. That's OK. All part of the learning process. My best strategy is to not chase perfection. Just try to chase awesome...and capture it. #122edchat
A2: I definitely can count on @khoggardGRT to help me reflect on where the lesson may have gone wrong. She also helps me see the positives and think about how we can readjust and keep going. I can also count on my PLN for wonderful suggestions #122edchat
A1: When a lesson tanks, I often go to the students. I'll say something like, "Well, that isn't working for us today. So, what would you like to learn about?" I'll collect some ideas, we'll take a vote, then do an online adventure to learn more about what we chose. #122edchat
A2: I am so lucky that everyone in my school will listen and give advice. I know it's special. I feel so grateful to have such great colleagues. #122edchat
A2 @mrsalisonstein & @slhistmcms are my building neighbors & we all share the same progressive teacher vibe… we always bounce ideas off of each other, share best practices, troubleshoot, etc. I value their expertise and honesty. #122edchat
A2: Things are different this year w/o @megan_hacholski. Everyone is matched up, so I am on my own. I do talk with @mdeegan122 and @KalchbrennerELA to brainstorm and problem solve. They have great insight and have the ability to find the good in most situations. #122edchat
A2: I would say I have both @MrPStrunk and @ERobbPrincipal. I know they will tell me the truth, good or bad. They won't judge but instead listen, support, and guide.
#122edchat
A1 It depends on the issue. Science related I go to my dept chair. Team related I have my math team mate. The counselor I am working with this year is also amazing at being calm and solving problems. #122edchat
100% This is a hard one to swallow when things don't go well. I know my first instinct is to be defensive...bu taking ownership is the only way to grow and get better. #122edchat
A1 I am no longer a classroom teacher but the first thing to do is OWN it and just know it happens. This is a great opportunity to let Ss show you what they can do and allow their voice and choices to be heard. #122edchat
A2: my new 4th grase ELA partner @KemrajLisa is da best! Last year my grade level/subject had crazybT turnover and I always felt like I was drowning. Her skills and mine are well balanced, it is so refreshing to actually have someone to plan with! #122edchat
A1b Whenever I think a lesson is awesome, then turns out bad I always make sure I discuss it with my students. We talk about what could have been differently. Whether it’s instructions, or more background knowledge they always give me great feedback #122EDCHAT
A2: It’s hard sometimes because I’m the only person in my position in my school, but I have an amazing technology paraprofessional who will just laugh with me sometimes. Also, @mrsboburczak even though she’s not at my building 👩🏼💻👩🏻💻#122edchat
#122edchat - We have a great cadre of coaches in our district who are all new to the job and going through similar experiences. We rely on each other constantly and we are all learning at the same time from one another.
A2: I usually turn to my former supervisors and mentors for guidance. There's also a very good chance I'll reach out to the growing support network that I have found on @twitter#122edchat
Yes 100%. This is the value of these chats. It forces us to externalize our thinking and reflect on our practice. I'm thankful to you both for the wonderful opportunities for reflection that you have created. #122edchat
A2: I rely on my fellow deans to have my back. We have a great relationship on our team and support each other when one is having a rough day or moment. #122edchat
A2 I'm lucky to be able to confide in my team because we work together well, lean on each other when we need to, but we're also there for each other. I'm also lucky to have a longtime friend that I can talk to. LOL she and I go way back to our preschool teaching days. #122edchat
Jumping in late! A2: @_on11 always listens & helps find the positive! Of course @KalchbrennerELA!! She just gets it, she’s always there to talk & reason through issues. Plus she runs with any crazy ideas we create! #122edchat
A2 My AP. As principal you don’t have many to confide in, you have to be the positive and calm in all things. We know we can close our door, freak out if needed, then press on! #122EDCHAT
A2: My principal and my assistant principal are both supportive. I know that I can reflect with them when things don't go well. They will offer a new perspective and support my growth. #122edchat
A2. I try to be authentic and transparent with my staff - so I think I could share this with any of them. I want my staff to see me striving to grow, reflecting on experiences and adapting to make things better. #122edchat
#122edchat A1 During my first years of teaching @ofctimallen was entertaining the USA with Tim the Tool Man Taylor on Home Improvement. I thought... I could do that in my classroom. THE KIDS LOVE IT! The grunts, #MorePower chants, and the side talk. I go back to this often.
A1: I use #gamification and #GBL: I set the lesson goal and narrative. Ss play a LIVE role playing game. They're unable to win until they learn what I want them to. It doesn't matter HOW they learn, the important thing is getting a good grade in the test anyway. right? #122edchat
A2
When something goes wrong I reach out to the other teachers in my building. We are all very close and we all share ideas
Often times I feel like our entire building is like one big team!#122edchat
A2: As an admin, my circle is small. @sc_roark or @APChrisParker are my go-to guys. They are leveled headed, tell me if I am going in the wrong direction and in general support what I am trying to accomplish. They are huge assets to our school. #Ready2Learnrms#122edchat
A1: I always like to give students brain breaks. I lost my voice, and in the morning, I was just typing my directions. Sometimes, you have to improvise. #122edchat
A1: I like to take a quick brain break with the class by doing something physical. It helps destress the situation for all of us - then come back and revisit after our 10-20 reps 😀 #122edchat
A2 At my school, I lean on @DeannPoleon. She tells it like it is and always has great ideas on hand. Outside of my school, it is @dene_gainey all the way. He is honest, supportive, and someone I look up to as an educator and person. #122edchat
A3: I tend to go into every lesson nowadays assuming something WILL go wrong! Makes it a lot easier to troubleshoot calmly and get the kids feeling okay about things, too. #122edchat
A3- Go into active problem-solving mode! I don't tend to get too worried when things don't go well. I believe there is a solution for everything. It might not be the ideal or original plan, but anything can be fixed. #122edchat
A3: I do my best to not dwell on what went wrong and think about what I've learned from the lesson. Just because something doesn't go as expected does not mean it was a failure-you may have discovered something you hadn't originally planned for. #122edchat
A2: I am constantly relying on @MrsLouder and @justmiller79 when I’m on the edge. I need to be in the judgement free zone sometimes, and I can say or ask anything. #122edchat
A2: A trusted colleague. Because we can laugh about it, because she's adventurous and flexible, too, and because she often has some great ideas about how to reteach the lesson. #122edchat
A3: I think @thezenteacher would say - "It is what it is. Neither good nor bad." Take things for what they are, roll with the punches, and then get back up to try again. Just keep tweaking... ;D #122edchat
A1 I’ll admit, “This isn’t working as planned.” And I’ll ask a group or the class “Why isn’t this working? How can we fix this?” It’s shows we’re a team and practices complex problem solving and reflection skills. #122edchat
A3 Humor! (my stock answer for at least 1 Q in chats I’ve noticed). Teachers aren’t perfect so why try to be? We model imperfection for students. Have a #FailForward mentality! I share my frustration at my mistakes, re-approach issue/activity, try again. Ain’t no thang #122edchat
A1 happened today to @Tpet27 and I with the technology! We just summarized the main parts and kept it moving to get to the good stuff... Rube Goldberg projects! Simple machines and popping 🎈 #122edchat#champforkids#stem
A2: I lean on my friend and teammate @aprylthompson, she is my person at school and I can go to her for anytype of help. I can bounce ideas off her and she will give thoughtful suggestions and insight. It is great to have someone to go to. #122edchat
A3: It can definitely be difficult & frustrating but I try to remember that sometimes the best lessons don’t go as planned. Just gives me another chance to make it better. Shows the kids that you just make changes & try again. #122edchat
A3: I remember that I ask my students to remain positive and turn failures into positives. How can I ask them to do this and not embrace it myself? I have to walk the walk if I am going to talk the talk. #122edchat
A3: We tell our Drama Ss this: Most people don't know there's a mistake, so don't make a big deal about it...keep on going. We basically have two options - get mad about circumstances or dig in to overcome adversity. There is a solution; we have to be willing to fight. #122edchat
A3: The key is to have a mindset that always focuses on the positive. If its all you ever do, having a lesson go downhill doesn't phase you... Better yet, you're Ss aren't phased either because you are consistent.
#122edchat
A2: I have some great former colleagues that I continue to go to for support I'm in my 2nd year at my new school Don't have anyone specific...yet #122edchat
Yep. This definitely happens. Doesn’t matter if you have been teaching for a year or 50. My go to has to be launching into a 4-corners activity or Socratic seminar/discussion about what went right/wrong and where the gap happened #122edchat
Q1: Murphy’s Law seems to launch full force for teachers every now and then. What is your go-to activity or strategy when a lesson (or entire day!) doesn’t go according to plan? #122edchat
A2: I choose my boss to lean on and confide. He's very supportive and asks the right questions to help me realize what went wrong and how to fix it. He's AWESOME! #122edchat
A2: @EALewis2016 has been my go to for everything. She listens to my frustrations and then offers advice or asks me questions that make me reflect on my lessons. #122edchat
A3: When things do not go as expected, I go home and reflect. Today, I had one on one conversations with a few students which resulted in some seat changes, but I feel like tomorrow will be a better day because of that. #122edchat
#122edchat A2 My TWO anchors at school are @MrRyburnGRHS and Coach Reeves . A former minister and an unbelievable coach. They are my spiritual anchors and help energize my #PositiveAttitude .
A3: I don’t know if it’s just me, but it seems like I’m always stumbling over something. I like to break it up and keep it positive with something like a @GoNoodle or even just singing a silly song #122edchat
A3 If we are resilient people as we must be to be quality educators this is just what we do! We try again and again. Growth mindset, you mess up, tweak it, go at it again. #122edchat
A3: Lots & lots of LAUGHTER. Seriously we have the greatest profession in the world where mistakes are stepping stones. Laugh, regroup & pick another letter!🤗🤗🤗 #122EDCHAT
A1: A #STEAM challenge. I open up my junk cabinets and come up with something random. Like today when half of my ss were at Chorus practice. Pink trees and Christmas ornaments! 😂 #122edchat
The person knows who they are - we have been friends for years, allies in the foxhole of education when things have been awful, been through job changes, and even when life takes people from us. #122edchat
A2: It’s hard sometimes because I’m the only person in my position in my school, but I have an amazing technology paraprofessional who will just laugh with me sometimes. Also, @mrsboburczak even though she’s not at my building 👩🏼💻👩🏻💻#122edchat
Hey edchat: Thanks to all you teachers tuning in. I’m planning my 2019 appearance calendar and would like to visit with all of you. 4m mini-documentary on Kyle Jenks’ James
Madison portrayal
https://t.co/smjuC22BXg#122edchat
A3: I always feel that I learn from my mistakes. So I reflect, talk with my inner circle and come up with the next plan to make it better. As long as I improve, I am usually happy #122edchat
A3: I try to keep reminding myself of my "why" - at the end of the day it's not the scores or the grades or anything else but making my Ss feel loved and helping them become better human beings. If I still did that I'm not a failure. #122edchat
A3: I might beat myself up for a few minutes, but then I inevitably find some humor in the situation! That reminds me to not take myself so seriously... #122edchat
A3. I remind myself “to take my work seriously but do not take myself serious”. It’s ok to laugh and have others see you are not perfect but you are willing to learn and be resilient. #122edchat
A3: It can definitely be difficult & frustrating but I try to remember that sometimes the best lessons don’t go as planned. Just gives me another chance to make it better. Shows the kids that you just make changes & try again. #122edchat
A3: Students need to see how we respond to those "failures." By modeling how to be flexible, how to laugh about it, how to adapt, how to create a new experience, and how to learn from what happened, we are giving students skills that will help them be successful. #122edchat
A4 First help kids find out what is wrong with Plan A...might not be the plan but the approach. If it is the Plan A, ask the kids what the trouble is, then tweak it, or change, or move to Plan B. We have one grammar activity we refine all the time which is kind of cool #122edchat
Exactly! We must encourage risk taking and the idea that it’s okay to FAIL (First Attempt In Learning)- we can learn so much from mistakes, we just can’t give up! #122edchat
#122edchat A3 The key is to be POSITIVE Even when things go wrong STAY POSITIVE! This produces joy and will inspire your students and coworkers. Here is my cycle of being positive and joy that is produced by my career in education.
A4- At this point, I think it's important to talk to Ss about the importance of being able to "fail forward" and keep going. Also, if there are skill gaps (academic or social-emotional) that are stopping them from being successful, they must be addressed. #122edchat
A4: From very early on, we discuss the importance of having and maintaining a growth mindset. We talk about taking risks, stepping out of our comfort zones, encountering obstacles, & supporting one another so that we can all celebrate along the way. #122edchat
#122edchat - It is all part of the journey. If we want our students to overcome obstacles and persevere, then we should too. If you don’t have a positive mindset about roadblocks and navigating tough situations, then being in EDU will eat you alive.
A1 happened today to @Tpet27 and I with the technology! We just summarized the main parts and kept it moving to get to the good stuff... Rube Goldberg projects! Simple machines and popping 🎈 #122edchat#champforkids#stem
A4: Getting them talking is key. If they can verbalize their current location and their desired destination, better guidance/assistance can be given. Together, we can work to redirect and find a beneficial alternative to Plan A. #122edchat
Okay Q4: When you see your students struggling to be successful with Plan A, what measures do you have in place for them to dig into a Plan B? #122edchat
A2: The art teacher or my neighbor the STEM teacher for creative ideas, @ScottOste for planning ideas, and many others to make me laugh instead of cry... #122edchat
A4: Being intentional about helping them see that Plan A is not a final destination, but a pathway to learning. Fortunately, there are plenty of other paths they can take in many cases! #122edchat
A4. Knowing your students passions and challenges allows you to provide the Plan B that meets their needs and allows for growth and success. #122edchat
You HAVE to stay positive and optimistic in this field or it will chew you up, spit you out, and not look back. Educators must practice self-care, keep your mairigolds close, have fun, leave work at school sometimes, and remember that “this too shall pace” #122edchat
A4 With every concept I teach I try to plan with a multi prong approach. Need a video...bam here are links to 2 you can watch. Can’t find the information....bam check out these library resources for info. Ss know that if one way doesn’t work another way is coming. #122edchat
A3 Positivity is my middle name! I don't beat myself up, I reflect, think of what I could have done differently, and I share that with my Ss. Cancer taught me a lot. Life is a journey with many bumps. Up to us to decide to dust off or sit and pout. #122edchat
A3 I fail all of the time! If I wasn’t able to reflect and move past it, I would have had to leave the profession long ago! When I first started I took the failures so hard, but I was so lucky to have a great team behind me to help build me up #122edchat
A4: When I notice that my students are starting to become distracted, I always put on a @gonoodle to give them a break. Then, they are focused and ready to tackle the rest of the day. #122edchat
A4: I think it’s important for our students to see us struggling sometimes, too. We need to model how to problem solve and make the best of a challenging situation #122edchat
A1 Normally I will take in the reins and steer the class into a Socratic seminar or discussion. This is because usually if a lesson goes south it is because the collaborative task had something that didn't click. #122edchat
Q1: Murphy’s Law seems to launch full force for teachers every now and then. What is your go-to activity or strategy when a lesson (or entire day!) doesn’t go according to plan? #122edchat
A3: since it's football season, I'll draw a parallel - I read my class like a quarterback reads the field. There are plenty of plays in the playbook if one play isn't working. The end goal is to get down the field. Adjust and move forward. #122edchat
#122edchat -A4- It is all about instilling an urgency for learning where the students will find their own path to learning when they aren’t successful initially.
A4
Laugh it off! Don't take yourself too seriously! The kids know what's happening they sense when something's wrong. Be honest with them. Tell them you need to make a change of plans. You'd be surprised how resilient they are.#122edchat
Educators always must have backup plans. Education should be differentIted for learners BC not all learners learn the same way. This is where student choice plays a big role. #122edchat
#122edchat A4 I strategically place my Ss in groups so every group has a high learner. Most of my classroom time is spent LISTENING to my students teach each other in peer groups. Although not scientifically valid, I show them this picture at the beginning of the year. #ItWorks
A4: 2 responses - 1st, some students don't want to give up on Plan A, so I give them extra time until they are ready for a Plan B; 2nd, I like to give students choices to figure out their own Plan B. For both, I'm just the guide on the side.🙂 #122edchat
:( This response makes me sad. I miss getting to stop by and check in on you. Hit me up, buddy. Drama is done in a week or so. We need to go to celebrate. #122edchat
3) #122edchat Focus on the result you want and commit to getting it no matter how. Just because one plan may not get you there does not mean your goal has to change, just your strategy. Even in football you get 4 downs to get ten yards. You don't have to get it all the 1st time.
Since the learning outcomes for each set of literacy skills align with the standards as well as my department goals, guiding my students with multiple learning paths (plans A, B, ...) will always measure up to the main goal - developing their critical thinking skills. #122edchat
A4: I think it's important to let Ss know that failure is part of growth, no one is perfect, and to keep trying and focus on what you can control, which is your effort, attitude, humility, gratitude and kindness. Specific strategies depend on the actual problem. #122edchat
As a first year teacher who tends to be hard on herself, I really appreciate this chat. It is nice to know that other teachers go through the same things I am going to. Thank you for showing me that I am not alone. #122edchat
Yes! Teaching is a work of HEART! Students are so much more than scores- what did they learn? Are they better than when they first met us? Have they grown in the time we’ve been together? #122edchat
A4: I listen to them and watch their body behaviors. They will tell you that it isn't going well. You have to be response and maybe get ideas from them. They are honest with you. Especially middle school kiddos. #122edchat
A3 I keep trying and if that fails go to the back up plan. When I do figure out the issue I tell the kids that I solved it with some perseverance #122edchat
A2 I'll talk it over with others teaching the same courses who may have experienced the same issue with the material or the lesson we co-created. #122edchat
A4 first figure out what the struggle was with plan A. After that if it was the plan be flexible (I’m sure you already were) and give the S some choices that individualizes for them. Probably have several plans going at once if you are doing it right?!? #122edchat
A4. Its hard, but this is where individual attention comes in to play. Some get it quick. Some don't. Differentiate your lessons so you can help in each situation. #122edchat
A4 LOL we work on plans D, L, Y, Z, AA Hahaha sorry, I couldn't resist. I try hard to establish an environment where we look at "failures" as stepping stones, work them out, back up and try again. #122edchat
A3: Even when I want to be that superhero teacher everyday, I try to remind myself that I am human and learning. It’s part of the journey to being the best version of me. #122edchat
#122edchat -A4- It is all about instilling an urgency for learning where the students will find their own path to learning when they aren’t successful initially.
A5: Any role where I can inspire people to believe in themselves, and realize the hope of their calling, is where I would be at home. If that is not available, I would love to be a @NatlParkService ranger. @YellowstoneNPS and @GlacierNPS are two of my dream locations. #122edchat
A5: 1st, I'd be devastated that my services as a reading specialist would no longer be needed. I would find some way to still work with children whether it be at a library or volunteering at a school. I can't even begin to imagine a world where I'm not in education #122edchat
A5: After initial shock and true sadness... it would be time to reach out to my PLN for support, start prepping application items, maybe blog, and something fun. It is a time to realize the future is now, I can be anything I want to be...
#122edchat
A4: When my Ss are struggling that usually tells me I didn't do the best job teaching, so I back up. Ask them to explain what they do know and then we pick up what fell off and start again. #122edchat
The Ss were amazing they were reflecting on how frustrating and aggravated they felt but how they understood that their brain was growing and learning new things ❤️❤️! #122edchat#champforkids
A5: explaining things different ways, modeling, and letting other students explain but mostly taking time to listen. Too many times I jump in to fix a problem but haven't taken the time to really listen and understand where my students are #122edchat
A5: It would break my heart because I love being able to formulate relationships and teach my Ss. My next step would be to find a career within the greater educational field. #122edchat
A4 Brain break. Regroup. Clarify. Give kids enough wait time to explain what isn't working for them. Find another real-world connection. I taught math and this was big. They had to see the relevance for it to stick. #122edchat
A5 Well, while I’m apply for other teaching/leadership positions or work as a consultant, I would attend stand up comedian school, write commercial jingles, write an edu-book and a scathing tell all. And I’d sleep for a week. #122edchat
#LastingLearning crew- as always, thank you for the great ideas and inspiration. Go check out #122edchat while you can, then jump on #BeTheOne in 15 minutes.
A4: I just had this discussion with my seniors. I suggested spending a little time in a sad place, but don’t live there. Ask yourself, “what now?” #122edchat
A4 part 2: I think of my work as filling holes. Sometimes Ss trip in a hole and we have to back fill so they can keep going. Picking up with what they understand so we know how to move forward really helps them. #122edchat
A5 Without being too dramatic, I don’t think I could do anything else. My entire identify is wrapped up in teaching. It consumes my entire life. I would have to find another job to keep doing what I love. #122edchat
Did everyone have fun tonight in #122edchat?!? Of course you did! Next week, the party gets even better as we welcome in two of our most favorite ladies. We hope that you will return for another amazing adventure with @bmohamenglish and @GraceLee380. Set an alarm. Wednesday 7CST.
A3 Realize that if the students are safe and healthy any mistake or issue with a lesson can be overcome. Think about what went right, even if the lesson was a mess! #122edchat
A5: that is a total nightmare for any profession. i believe in always having extra skills in place and you will be find something else quickly. but if teaching is your passion, the school setting is not the only place to show immerse in that passion #122edchat
And our students need to see us model a growth mindset and how we respond to setbacks. This is as critical to their education as the content we're teaching #122edchat
A5: I want to inspire people. I want to help them grow and change into more successful, kinder humans. If not that, I honestly might try a school secretary. Crazy huh? #122edchat
I am stealing this answer too! I always have to model for students how to tell me, or others what they are actually not getting. If students can tell us where there is a disconnect their peers or us teachers can help so much easier! #122edchat
A5. Educators are folks who can adapt and relate to others - so we would be ok as we would find a role that allows us to help impact others! #122edchat
A5. As a music educator, we are always expendable. I will keep on keeping on! I love what I do and I know it is important. But, when al else fails... Night Manager at Gamestop. #122edchat
A3: It takes a great deal to bring me down. However, when it happens, I dig deep, sometimes cry it out, 🙏, push myself through it & persevere. I try to keep a positive mindset. I go to my #JoyFulLeaders & Twitter PLN for positivity. #122edchat
A5: After a period of grief and depression, I'll get back up and find a new place or a new way to serve. Being an educator is in my heart, in my spirit, and in my blood - can't stay away. #122edchat
#122edchat A5 I will soon become a published author. "The Story of Always Believe" will be on sale soon. My mission as a teacher is to spread the power of making your 1st rule #AlwaysBelieve in Yourself. This rule has changed lives for the better. My career has been blessed.
A5: put on my pink tiara and tutu, find a wand, and walk around as the Twitter fairy to see what “fun”omenal things are lurking in my school. #122edchat
Ab: Then, when I get tired of that, dress up as the pink t- rex, and do silly things like direct the band. Then, start a show where I have a diff job every day. #haventthoightaboutthisatall#122edchat
#122edchat - A5- Hopefully I wake up again and it’s just a dream. But I’d probably have to go back and do something in IT again, though it would be tough because so much has changed in a decade.
A5 If education was a NO, I’m not sure where I would go.
I believe education is a calling and we accepted our roles.
We are all in a position to make a difference! #122edchat
A5 Oh man, be shocked and saddened. I would still do something that helped people in some way. Maybe something with foster care or try to get someone from my PLN to get me a job!! #122edchat
Laughter is always the remedy. Nothing in school is life or death. With all of the number obsession and ranking going on... laughter fits well. #122edchat
A5: I would immediately start thinking about the opportunities that await me around the proverbial corner! I'm a huge believer in the idea that everything happens for a reason! #122edchat
A4 I remind them learning is a process and provide examples of people they can relate to who had to overcome obstacles. And I remind them of obstacles they already overcame! #122edchat
Not dramatic at all. You are where you need to be. You are one of the most passionate educators that I know. Beyond lucky to have you with us, sharing your voice each week in #122edchat.
Thanks #122edchat and #LastingLearning families. This has been a rough three days back. After our chats tonight I feel more energiezed and ready to keep on going.
A5: reinvent myself! That's what I did... I now have a project called Edventure. https://t.co/grHBmxh3Fq. I can really use your feedback if you're up to pasting the address in google translate, since it's in Hebrew. Thanks! #122edchat
A5- Cry a lot-then become a weather woman becausetgst was my plan B. My retirement plan is to work at Disney World preferably as an actor of some sort. That would be cool! #122edchat
And right back at you. Being so passionate has it’s drawbacks too. I have way over extended myself lately, and am trying to dig out of it all before Xmas! #122edchat
I am right there with ya. I may have answered food truck operator for this Q to lighten the mood but I couldn't imagine doing anything else outside of the education field. #122edchat
Being flexible is the key- you can write out the best plans but the best teachers can “read” a room and make educational decisions based on their observations #122edchat
A4: The “never give up” mentality is the most important value I want to instill in the Ss I teach. Modeling how to persevere through failure is just as important as modeling success of a skill. #122edchat
A4: When Plan A doesn’t work for a student, I be there to listen, support, encourage, set goals, and help them learn from mistakes or perceived failures & grow forward. #122edchat
A little late to introduce myself. I am Briana and I am a college student in Tennessee. I am wanting to teach kinder if possible when I graduate. #122edchat
Hey #122edchat! So sorry I missed out tonight! Had a GHO earlier then did dinner with the fam & just got home. Looks like it was amazing! Missed y’all!
Sorry to hear the return has been rough, Steph. Hoping for a better day tomorrow as you head back to school with a full bucket thanks to #LastingLearning and #122edchat.
A4 Figure out the root cause of their struggle. Is it an accessibility issue,is it an ongoing person issue, or is it an engagement issue? Discuss with them and come up with solutions. #122edchat
A5: 1st, I'd be devastated that my services as a reading specialist would no longer be needed. I would find some way to still work with children whether it be at a library or volunteering at a school. I can't even begin to imagine a world where I'm not in education #122edchat
A1: Take a breath and go with the flow. I continually work on this and have started to realize that all moments of learning opportunities. Positive mindset! #122edchat
Q1: Murphy’s Law seems to launch full force for teachers every now and then. What is your go-to activity or strategy when a lesson (or entire day!) doesn’t go according to plan? #122edchat
#122edchat I missed since I was at a training thinking/discussing about the language of "achievement gap" and it's implications vs actualities. I'll have to lurk through the posts tonight😉
