Good evening #masterychat#mschat and #teachmindful
Melissa, 7th Grade Science from Upstate NY excited to be with all of you. Going to try and keep up with 3 chats tonight. Better do my finger stretches so I don't cramp up.

A1. Like with all good things, if you don’t have a mission or a goal, then what are you shooting for? How will you ever surpass that and achieve the next thing? How are you showing growth? How are you building rapport? Model goal setting and watch what happens! #MasteryChat
A1 If you don't have a clear vision, how can you have a clear idea of what success looks like. Good teaching doesn't happen by accident, it takes hard work and intention to do your best. #masterychat
I was heartbroken yesterday when I received word that I did not get a teaching position, but this chat is reminding me of why I love what I do. Thank you for all of your encouragement and support in this process. #masterychat
A1: When you are taking a road trip, if you don’t have a destination in mind you’ll waste money on gas and your final stop could be the gas station down the road. Having a vision or destination helps you do huge things with your students. #masterychat@ERobbPrincipal@_on11
A1 If you don't have a clear vision, how can you have a clear idea of what success looks like. Good teaching doesn't happen by accident, it takes hard work and intention to do your best. #masterychat
A1: There is so many ideas and possibilities that compete for your attention. Vision keeps your eyes on the prize and helps you decide what's most important! #Masterychat
A1: Having a vision or a destination in mind sets your course. It lets you know where you want to go so you can plan the journey to help you get there. #MasteryChat
A1: if you just hope you survived he year then your class has no path and no direction. You have to believe in a path and have a vision in what you want your Ss to achieve. #MasteryChat
A1: By charting the destination, you can choose your path to get there! Same destination may have different courses to travel - embrace them! #masterychat
Just like your life, you need to know where you are and where you're going, so you can figure out how to get from here to there and make it happen! #masterychat
A1 - A vision can provide insight and reason to “do the work” for both staff and Ss. It’s always easier to focus on the “now” or current pressing issues. By providing a clear vision, it enables a focus on both the reasoning & goals of the day to day work being done #masterychat
Hey there buddy. :) I finally got a new computer and now I can actually put my #122edchat sticker on my computer because it isn't a piece of junk. Yippee! #MasteryChat

q1: Visions help all smaller visions align to a bigger one. In other words, if I know what #masterychat wants to accomplish, I can align my vision to move that forward...and still focus on the vision for myself.
A1: If you know what your vision is, you know where your headed, but most importantly you know WHY you're headed there & when my Ss know WHY they have a reason to learn! #masterychat
It took me 5 years to get my first teaching position. I used the time to sub, get my masters and learn about what teaching really is. Have faith, the right job will come along. The journey will also have meaning for you. #masterychat
A1 It is important to have a vision or destination so that you can reverse engineer your class from that goal to make sure scaffolding and care are given to every step throughout the process. I like to know where I am going to figure out the best way to get to it. #masterychat
A1. Having a vision is key to helping you get to where you want to go. Sometimes where we are and where we want to be is two different places. That vision helps guide your path so you know how to align your goals to accomplish your dream. #MasteryChat
A1: Just like your life, you need to know where you are and where you're going, so you can figure out how to get from here to there and make it happen! #masterychat
A1- Just as I have students set daily and yearly goals,it is important for me to set a goal or a destination for our "voyage" together. It keeps us focused on our https://t.co/ersxbyA57Q us a vision to stay the course. #Masterychat
A1: we all need goals. If we don't have a destination in mind, we'll never know which direction we're headed, how far away we are from our goal, or what tools we need to get there. #masterychat
A1: It is important to get a vision because, if you do not have a plan, you plan to fail. I have a vision of a positive classroom environment where Ss encourage each other and support each other 110 % of the way. I aim to do that next year. #masterychat
A1 ~ A vision / destination helps stakeholders keep their eye on the prize! Everyone knows what they are working towards & how decisions are made! #masterychat
A1: Like @burgessdave video said, it creates a road map for your teaching. It’s a way to check your teaching/school culture thru the yr to make sure you’re on the path you want to be on, and not on the freeway headed the wrong direction! #masterychat
A1: It's essential. Without it, there is no direction and the people perish. There is no hope to reach your true destination. Vision is the driving force to keep people moving forward. #masterychat
Amanda from Florida here! A1 A destination is a goal we have to know where we want to go to achieve our end goal! This idiom provides purpose to our classroom. #MasteryChat
A1: Creating a vision is vital for achieving any goals. It forces you to create benchmarks along the way and helps streamline getting to the destination! #masterychat
A1: Vision is important because it gives a picture to the end in mind. Decisions that are made should all support the school’s vision. A vision keeps you focused. #masterychat
A1: A vision helps focus all conversations, decisions, and personnel. With a clear vision everyone is headed in the same direction & is focused on the same priorities/goals. Clarity creates cohesion. #masterychat
A1: It is important to have a vision because, if you do not have a plan, you plan to fail. I have a vision of a positive classroom environment where Ss encourage each other and support each other 110 % of the way. I aim to do that next year. #masterychat#masterychat
A1: Having a vision or "destination" reminds us what's important, especially during those times when it's easy to get side tracked with challenges. #MasteryChat
A1: Without a vision, we toss ourselves around aimlessly, driven and tossed in any direction by the winds. With a mission, we can focus on what we need to, and toss the superfluous aside. #MasteryChat
A1 A vision / destination is important so that Ss can really understand the WHY. If you & your Ss create a shared destination & goals for a class, the Ss won't need to wonder WHY & will feel empowered. #masterychat
A1 Simple answer: if you don't know where you are going, how will you get there?
More complex: Vision is what drives us. What sparks passion, mystery, and adventure. Why WOULDN"T you want that in your school? #masterychat
A1: we all need goals. If we don't have a destination in mind, we'll never know which direction we're headed, how far away we are from our goal, or what tools we need to get there. #masterychat
A1: Unless there is a roadmap, we wander aimlessly! Shared vision leads to shared navigation, ultimately setting us in the correct direction of our goal. #masterychat
A1: and not just create, but periodically revisit as a community. It's important to explore a faculty's values as educators and to align those values toward a singular goal. This makes a school's why that much more transparent, most of app to the school itself #masterychat
A1 this geography teacher ❤️💙❤️this Question! You have to have a plan, map, goal, destination in mind to arrive at the right place at the right time !! Don’t want to get lost, or sidetracked, on the journey !! #masterychat
A1: It’s important to have something to aim for and to want to achieve. To know where you want to be and to experience success and learning through failure. To have expectations and purpose. #masterychat
Wow amazing the diversity of subject areas, grades and regions represented here tonight! gonna break out my Google Maps to locate everybody #masterychat
A1: I would assume the vision for the course is related to the learning objectives, the areas of mastery for which the Ss and the instructor strive each day. Important for the WHY to be clear and understood. #MasteryChat
A1: Our schools are a mandate. They would operate with or without vision. Challenges can feel like certain doom without vision. Keeps Ss enlisted. #masterychat
A1: A vision sets the course for the journey that you chart for your classroom or school. It serves as a guideline for doing what is best for your students. Success is a journey, not a destination. Keep your vision clear! #MasteryChat
A1. It's a way of getting everyone on the same track with culture, and vision and where we want to take the school. Keeping everyone in alignment with everything going on, and no surprises. Makes T feel comfortable to take risks! #masterychat
A1) Just like a Run, if you don’t know the distance it have a route planned it will be tough to determine how to run. It allows for clarity to focus more deeply on content for ss as well as the teacher. #MasteryChat
A1: Working together toward that vision or goal is awesome and leads to accountability for everyone involved. Everyone feels valued and has a voice! You can also be reflective and grow throughout the process. #masterychat
A1: Having a "destination" in mind for my classroom gives me direction. I even teach the 7 Happy Habits to my 3rd graders ... "Begin with the End in Mind" - It's the idea of having goals and creating a plan to meet those goals. They can be short term or long. #MasteryChat
Wow amazing the diversity of subject areas, grades and regions represented here tonight! gonna break out my Google Maps to locate everybody #masterychat
Perhaps "vision" connotes the ideas of innovation and creative pedagogy. A departure from the norm or accepted modes of teaching & learning. #MasteryChat
A1: Without a vision for your students, it's like you're going from task to task "playing school" but not working towards the best possibility. #masterychat
A1: Learning is an experience + journey. Without a destination or a story for why you’re all in it together + where you’re going, it’s a lot harder to get through the tough spots. Vision builds community + makes it fun. #MasteryChat
A1: Ss need to know the purpose of what they are doing. They do well with consistent boundaries and expectations clearly spelled out them, as well as the purpose of all learning. #masterychat
Wow amazing the diversity of subject areas, grades and regions represented here tonight! gonna break out my Google Maps to locate everybody #masterychat
Oh, I like that analogy! you plan your run very differently depending on the conditions, terrain, distance, etc. (Of course, I am a terrible runner, so I only know that in theory...)
#Masterychat
A1 If you have no idea where you are headed, then you will have a very hard time getting where you want to go! It's fine to take different paths, but you should always have some sort of end in mind #masterychat
I work with a lot diverse learners. They don't fit the traditional school mold. I'm asking a lot from them. For the most part they trust our process. #masterychat
A1a: the word “vision” is also vital. It just reeks of innovation and creativity. Share your “vision” with students - they’ll react positively #masterychat
Educating without vision is like navigating without a destination of even a compass. Its a lost cause. There is no need to try. #masterychat#directionless
A1 If you have no idea where you are headed, then you will have a very hard time getting where you want to go! It's fine to take different paths, but you should always have some sort of end in mind #masterychat
A1: A vision drives the instruction and as the teacher you get the opportunity to decide what that destination (final outcome) looks like. Stay focused on the vision and you will arrive. #MasteryChat
A1: the inner vision is what drives the outer actions. Plus an inner vision is a contagious disease that infects everybody with passion
Whats inside? A pirate? Then that is the vision. Share it, let it drive T & L
#masterychat
A1: When Ss know the end goal of a lesson or project, there’s more buy in and engagement! Kids will create a magical path to the destination! #MasteryChat
A1: Not only do you not know where, you’re going, you have no way to assess progress and change when needed. It becomes a waste of time, money and resources #masterychat
I love that example! Most people don't just get in their cars and drive. You have a place to go and use your maps or knowledge to get there! #MasteryChat
For those that missed it before the chat...here is a 4 min video for later that started all of this 5 Word #tlap GPS stuff: https://t.co/JsKA82qZjs Shout out to #XPLAP author, @mrmatera for his class assignment #MasteryChat
Educating without vision is like navigating without a destination of even a compass. Its a lost cause. There is no need to try. #masterychat#directionless
A1- Our school and home lives can often become overwhelming, when we have a common understanding about what we do and why we do it, setting priorities becomes much easier and we in turn become more efficient and effective. #masterychat
A1. A vision helps set the course for learning. I think it is incredibly important to involve students in creating a "vision statement" and periodically revisit where we are in achieving those goals in order for everyone to be invested in the process. #masterychat#tlap
A1: Stephen Covey says to “begin with the end in mind”. You have to know where you’re going in order to take the right steps to get there. #masterychat
Roman! So glad to have you here. You always bring a ray of sunshine to our conversations and help us all stay focused on doing all the hard work of teaching with kindness. Thanks for being here, bud. #masterychat
Vision is the destination for the trip. Mission is the road map that will get you there. Turns may twist but the vision guides the path & remains the steady. #Masterychat
A2: There are so many words I can think of, but these are five I would love for students to use describe my class/school: culturally-rich, empowering, stimulating, captivating, and worthy. #MasteryChat
I believe this has been the greatest shift in education over the last twenty years. Thinking of the end goal and planning individualized and differentiated plans to get there. I LOVE teaching in modern education! #Masterychat
A1. Hello, I’m Anna from Northern VA! You need to get people on board for the ride. If they don’t know what the point is, why would they want to join you?@MrPStrunk@ERobbPrincipal#masterychat
Q2 is up! Let's create a five word "GPS"... If your students had to describe their experience in your class/school in five words, what would you want them to be? #MasterChat
Q2 is up! Let's create a five word "GPS"... If your students had to describe their experience in your class/school in five words, what would you want them to be? #MasterChat
A1: vision allows you to see big picture. With that you can set little goals. Allows others to see where you want to go and give you advice how to get there. #MasteryChat
Playing school was fun when we were all little kids. I don't think our "lessons" in the front yard were the best pedagogy, though, were they? :) #masterychat#EducationEvolves
It’s backwards planning for school culture! Plus, it brings a third point into the room. It’s not about judging the worth of ideas, but about asking if the ideas align to our vision #masterychat#A1

A1 Yes to all these As! A destination helps give Ss an end goal for them to strive twd, and it helps Ts with figuring out what to teach & focus on #masterychat
“It's a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don't keep your feet, there's no knowing where you might be swept off to.”
#masterychat
A2 I asked my Ss what 3 words they would use to describe me as a teacher just the other day.
The top 5 were creative, funny, helpful, caring and smart. I think they nailed who I am and what I strive for every day! #MasteryChat
I love the focus on growth mindset, positive motivation and student belief! Those are foundations students can utilize to find success throughout their academic and "real" lives! #masterychat

A2 - That's daunting... but I would hope Freeing, Exploring, Literature, Writing, Challenging. However, I could see Difficult and Hard being in there. Always hard to think about how they would describe your class, but essential to be empathetic with them. #masterychat
A2: These are five I would love for students to use describe my class/school: culturally-rich, empowering, stimulating, captivating, and worthy. #MasteryChat
Great point @TechieTeachOtt ! Getting away from "day to day" planning, and "calendar based" lesson design and really creating a learning journey for students is HUGE! #masterychat

A1. I think a vision is really helpful for collaborative work amongst staff. We all want to move forward, but how do we move forward together? #masterychat
Thanks! My goal is to be more than a teacher you have one year and then forget later. I want to make sure I leave a lasting legacy on the lives of my students. #masterychat#waledchat
#masterychat a1 Ever since I left my school, ss have complained that rooms don't look as good. They actually were archives designed to make a ss immerse in #language learning AND they were pretty welcoming too, it's the ss workplace!
A5 🍄inspiring 🍄empowering 🍄validating 🍄safe🍄enriching .... i think, are the terms I’d like kids to use !!! (❤️Welcoming & encouraging if I can cheat!) 😉📚🍄‼️#masterychat
A2 Safe, Controlled Chaos, Student Lead, Learning to Learn, Innovative - I cheated a little, there are more then 5 words. I would be curious to see what my Ss would actually say. #masterychat
At the beginning of the year I always let them know my class will be much "different" than classes they've had before - hopefully in a good way! #masterychat
#masterychat Q1 the very first word of the question posed is "why" ....i believe the answer to the question is also "why" . People- no matter the age - need to know the why. Why is this important ? Why do we need to do this? Why are you passionate about this ? Why ?
A1 We need to set our eyes on a common goal. The goal is not the final destination. We decide our journey and destination together, but we choose our goals and strategies together. We need to have this conversation to support, uplift and celebrate each other. #masterychat
I'm sorry to hear that, but your map is headed to a different course. There's quite the prize waiting for you, I'm sure of it. Your students have a treasure in YOU! Keep your eyes ahead!
A3: I believe learning has to be dynamic, relevant, and applicable to stick. I hope my students never say my class is stagnant, irrelevant, frustrating, intimidating, or easy. #MasteryChat
My room is vey S centered. Even though I teach 3rd I think it's important to encourage independent problem solvers. I love this time of yr when I can watch them run the classroom (take attendance, do all-calls to get their peers' attention, giving me a to-do list). #MasteryChat
A3: Five words I would NEVER want students to use to describe our school: Disrespectful, culturally-insensitive, "waste of time", irrelevant, harmful #MasteryChat
You might win. That is an awesome 5 words! I am so glad I am in a position where I am not allowed to report grades. Provide feedback? YES! Assign a letter grade? NO! #masterychat
Here is question 3, everyone! I love these 5 word questions. It is actually an activity I do with my students often- most recently for them to describe their spring break! #masterychat
A5 I never want them to say I am mean, unfair, uncaring, boring, sarcastic. I don't care what people tell you, MS kids are not ready for the "real world". Don't make school harder for them #MasteryChat
A3: That's a good one! I would hope no one leaves thinking "I have nothing to offer". Everyone has a place and a purpose and my job is to help them find it. #MasteryChat
It’s pretty cool. And you know what, there is something satisfying about a student that didn’t like you or your class coming back later and showing appreciation. It happens. #masterychat
A3 “Finding the easy way out.” I hope they’ll challenge themselves in the service of their values, and I don’t want them to see their work as a way out. It’s a way in.
#MasteryChat
Oh man - the five words that I would not like to be used to describe my class would be: Boring, Fixed, non-inclusive, in-welcoming, unsafe #MasteryChat
Okay...we decided where we want to go...now we are looking at where we don't want to go. Coming up...how do we GET THERE??? #MasteryChat Q4,5,6,7 will come from my account. #tlap
Thank you for saying this, Melissa. I hear too many people say "they need to get ready for the real world." Guess what... as @ERobbPrincipal tells our staff, "For our kids, this is their 'Real World.'" #masterychat#waledchat
A5 I never want them to say I am mean, unfair, uncaring, boring, sarcastic. I don't care what people tell you, MS kids are not ready for the "real world". Don't make school harder for them #MasteryChat
Have the Ss plan and teach...My Ss were so intimidated at first now they are like I can teach so and so how to do it...my answer always YOU GO! #masterychat
Been busy! But I've also been busy pursuing my dreams, building dreams with my students, and taking on the world of outdated educational practices. So... life is fabulous! How is the trip planning going?#masterychat
A3: We actually have banned words in my classroom. I cringe and let out a visceral scream when I hear "I can't". So: 1. "I can't" (I know it's 2) The other 4 are attitudes -2. pride 3. unkindness 4. no effort 5. deceit #MasteryChat Those are hard to put into single words!
Thank you for saying this, Melissa. I hear too many people say "they need to get ready for the real world." Guess what... as @ERobbPrincipal tells our staff, "For our kids, this is their 'Real World.'" #masterychat#waledchat

Q4: A destination isn't good enough!! A GPS must also know where you are RIGHT NOW in relationship to where you want to go. Why is this critical & how do you do it? #MasteryChat#tlap#LeadLAP
Make sure that the students produce for a real audience (@Flipgrid@SkypeClassroom) and ensure that the kids have voice and choice in the classes #MasteryChat

A3 Cold, boring, gross, I had a kid tell me of an issue with other girls and she had gone through 4 teachers without anyone listening to her #MasteryChat
Q4: A destination isn't good enough!! A GPS must also know where you are RIGHT NOW in relationship to where you want to go. Why is this critical & how do you do it? #MasteryChat#tlap#LeadLAP
A4 It can allow you to assess on your current opportunities for growth, resources you can leverage & identify goals. Knowing where you are starting is important! 1 way you can do this is creating an action plan for where you want your class to be vs. where it is now. #masterychat
I had a funny conversation with my daughter (13 & wants to be a teacher) who said she loves everything about #masterylearning except the fact that she doesn't get to stand up in front and "teach." Then she looked at me and said, "I know, I know. That isn't teaching." #masterychat
Q4: A destination isn't good enough!! A GPS must also know where you are RIGHT NOW in relationship to where you want to go. Why is this critical & how do you do it? #MasteryChat#tlap#LeadLAP
A4 Aside from something called formative assessment, authentic feedback and real life connections with students to find our place on the map. #masterychat
Q4: A destination isn't good enough!! A GPS must also know where you are RIGHT NOW in relationship to where you want to go. Why is this critical & how do you do it? #MasteryChat#tlap#LeadLAP
A4: You need to know where you currently are, if you aren't you may think that after downing a whole large pizza you can go climb a mountain. You need to know where you students are so that you can engage them where they are at. KNOWING YOUR KIDS is vital to this! #masterychat
A4. So that you can adjust as needed to make your space the best it can be for kids. It’s all about those kiddos! @ERobbPrincipal@MrPStrunk#masterychat
#masterychat a3 Had to go look at the 5 word GPS video. My anti GPS would have to be... can't, won't, lost, confused and dislike They are such blockers to brain learning.
A5: where are you at? Where do you need to go and what path or paths are you going to take. Need to see where they are and where you need to go #MasteryChat
A4: #masterychat If you don’t know where you are, you can’t know how to get where you want to be. My school is in the process of implementing PBIS, but first we had to figure out where our school culture was so we knew what steps to take moving forward
Q4: A destination isn't good enough!! A GPS must also know where you are RIGHT NOW in relationship to where you want to go. Why is this critical & how do you do it? #MasteryChat#tlap#LeadLAP
Q4: A destination isn't good enough!! A GPS must also know where you are RIGHT NOW in relationship to where you want to go. Why is this critical & how do you do it? #MasteryChat#tlap#LeadLAP
A4 - Personsal and professional reflection every day. Students also do a daily positive reflection on their day, class and overall outlook. Hard to adjust without getting the pulse from kids. #masterychat
Come up with your 5 words and then COMMIT!!!! Look at your lessons...would kids use those words??? If not...recalculate your lesson!! #ReRoute!!! Use your GPS!!! #MasteryChat#tlap
A4: In order to grow, you have to set goals. In order to set goals, you have to be real about your current settings. Know what you have to work with-run with that. Every situation isn’t always easy, but every situation is WORTH it. Embrace reality and set the goals. #MasteryChat
Q4: A destination isn't good enough!! A GPS must also know where you are RIGHT NOW in relationship to where you want to go. Why is this critical & how do you do it? #MasteryChat#tlap#LeadLAP
A4 We need to not just hear our Ss but actually listen to them. They are more in tune w/ what goes in the building than we are; we need to respect their input & value their opinions & ensure we are providing what they need to be successful #masterychat
A4: You need to know where you currently are, if you aren't you may think that after downing a whole large pizza you can go climb a mountain. You need to know where you students are so that you can engage them where they are at. KNOWING YOUR KIDS is vital to this! #masterychat
A4: You have to know where you’re at, and also how you got to where you’re already at, before you can plan for how to get to where yo want to be. Reflect, reset, and attack! #masterychat
A4: You have to have a starting point! At my campus, we do Person Centered Planning to find out where the students and families are, then we come up with a goal and plan to get there.
#masterychat
Daily reflection and collaboration allows for talk of strengths and failures. This is your map to where you were, are, and will be heading-even if it’s a repeat road! #masterychat
A4: In order to improve, we have to be honest about our current functioning. Instructionally, this is why we use formative assessments. Culturally, this means honest reflection and acknowledging unconscious biases that impact our practice. And sometimes that’s HARD! #masterychat
😊 At the beginning of the year I introduce the "Ask 3 Before Me" - All Ss learn each classroom job (they are assistants or coaches) - Ss who pass out supplies/papers make an all-call "Who didn't get...?" - They have use to staplers, paper clips, post-its #MasteryChat
A4: I like to see where my students are at the moment because I want to be responsive to their needs. We all are on a different journey, and our students have a roadmap before them as well. We have to give them tools to reach their destination. #masterychat
A4: A current reality will give you a starting point toward the vision. As a leader, first and foremost being present, visible, and immersed will help you gauge the current reality. #masterychat
Q4: A destination isn't good enough!! A GPS must also know where you are RIGHT NOW in relationship to where you want to go. Why is this critical & how do you do it? #MasteryChat#tlap#LeadLAP
#masterychat A4 talk to them, pull out what they already know about the topic (this is very difficult to do the first few times w/ Ss - they dont understand why you arent telling them what to memorize)
A4: you have to gauge where you are so you can move forward from there to get to the goal. You gauge where you’re at through conversations, visiting classrooms, asking for feedback on specific, goal-oriented actions taking place in the school #masterychat
A4- I don't want "gauging the reality of your class or school" to embolden deficit thinking. It's not about what students can't do, it's about what they can't do YET. And, to an equally important degree, what they WANT to do (learn). #masterychat
A4: If you are only focused on the destination you miss a lot of the adventure. In order to grow and reach your destination you have to check in and ensure you are still on the best path. #MasteryChat
A4 Being reflective is an essential component for growth. We have to “be real” with knowing and understanding where we are starting, and why we are in the place; so that we can make a plan to reach our destination. #MasteryChat
A4: If I don't know where I'm at & where my Ss are at - then they mostly likely aren't getting what they need. Listen to them - they'll tell you what they need & where they're at! #masterychat
A4 - Listen to students, teachers, community members, yourself. Take time to listen to how students feel about their school and experience. Ask them the difficult questions and share that with other teachers. Listening is key to gauging where you are at. #masterychat
A4: If reality = repertoire then knowing what your Ss can do is key to what you can do with them. Otherwise, you're teaching into a void. It might go ok, or you might get crickets. #masterychat
Ooh! I can't wait for you- so exciting! You are bringing me, right? #masterychat
shh... don't tell @jeffgargas, @RaeHughart, and @chadostrowski- I think they are counting on me for some workshops or changing the world or something like that this summer...
In reply to
@dene_gainey, @jeffgargas, @jeffgargas, @RaeHughart, @chadostrowski
A4 Lots of student reflection and sharing helps me see who’s making their work matter—and who is avoiding the task, the challenges, or the decision-making and risk-taking of meaningful learning. #MasteryChat
A4: have to know where to start so u can set realistic expectations. The worst thing u can do is set expectations bound to fail because it kills moral. Keep in mind ur not lowering ur expectations but know Rome wasn't built in a day.
#MasteryChat
A4: As individuals, needs are different and different times, knowing what we have let us know what we can and/or need to do. #Masterychat I am a fan of checkpoints (in a variety of ways) #Masterychat
A4: There is certainly a customer service aspect to school! We need to make sure that kids are happy with the product. In my @voxer book group we were just discussing giving students surveys to get their thoughts and opinions on school @ErinMarieMarone@AmandaKavs#MasteryChat
A4 Reality is important because it creates urgency and shared understanding. Some of my students were three grade levels behind in reading and math - I knew I had to provide these Ss with personal tutorials and extra supports beyond the length of my class #masterychat
Reflection is an enormous element of best practice. Reflect on who you are, be self aware on your growth, and ....... THEN, you can create a PLAN! #masterychat
Q4: A destination isn't good enough!! A GPS must also know where you are RIGHT NOW in relationship to where you want to go. Why is this critical & how do you do it? #MasteryChat#tlap#LeadLAP
A4) Knowing where your Ss r is the only way to help them move forward. This is NOT just summative tests, but formative assessments and observations. ANYTHING can give a T information. We must then use that info. to plan next steps in our teaching, & S learning. #masterychat
A4: Always make sure you have your thumb in the wind or ear to the ground (choose your metaphor) with solid formative assessments. Assess what you teach. Teach what you assess. #masterychat
A4: You have to know who you are teaching and what they are capable of. When teaching ELED, I always set the bar high, but the young Ss had trouble meeting the standard. Led to frustration. Needed to make adjustments to find their level + help them to be successful. #masterychat
Q4: A destination isn't good enough!! A GPS must also know where you are RIGHT NOW in relationship to where you want to go. Why is this critical & how do you do it? #MasteryChat#tlap#LeadLAP
This was so relevant with me today when one of my students was not getting her work done. I knew she just needed a different environment and moved her to a quieter location and she was my work horse all block. I was so proud of her work! #masterychat
A4: Change can't start with a shot in the dark. You have to know what needs change and why. Start by asking students and teachers what they think and need. #masterychat
Q4: A destination isn't good enough!! A GPS must also know where you are RIGHT NOW in relationship to where you want to go. Why is this critical & how do you do it? #MasteryChat#tlap#LeadLAP
Q1:The way Harley Davidson puts it-It's not about the destination, it's about the journey! Our class journey is filled with ups & downs but I love we experience it all together to the end! The vision is mine at first, then we create group & personal goals to achieve! #MasteryChat
A4: You can't run an effective class or school if you don't know where you are; your students and staff need a voice to feel empowered, to stay engaged. Buy-in on any initiative or vision is easier when those buying in have some ownership. Give ownership, give voice! #masterychat
#MasteryChat A4 Right now I am where I need to be, a place where I know good work is being done, but at the same time areas of learning and growth are visible
A4b - The GPS of the class determines not only what you teach, but also why students should embrace the content. If we can fully explain how the learning is meaningful, it’s time to change it up. #masterychat
A4: It's easy to lose yourself if you don't know where you're going, and it's easy to not stay grounded if you don't know where you're at. This is important for ELA skills. How can you teach a S to write a complex sentence when they can't write a complete thought? #masterychat
A4: You use the data and trust you’ve built w/ students to push them further. Know them by name, strength and need. Then keep building on it. #masterychat
A4: Some Ss are masters at compensating. They act like their cheating even when they know. It bothers me when a S feels/thinks they have to hide a weakness. #masterychat
A4) gauging this reality helps me as a teacher to meet ALL students needs. Not just a one size fits all approach to the classroom. But be able to fit learning for all of my students #masterychat
A4 I engage in a Workshop model where I confer with my students daily. My roadmaps have kids all over...I need their feedback plus formal formatives. #masterychat
Q4: A destination isn't good enough!! A GPS must also know where you are RIGHT NOW in relationship to where you want to go. Why is this critical & how do you do it? #MasteryChat#tlap#LeadLAP
It doesn't hurt to think of your students as customers and your teaching as the service. Would they be happy with your service, or would they want to speak to the manager?! #MasteryChat
In reply to
@chadw675, @voxer, @ErinMarieMarone, @AmandaKavs
You are right Chad! Utilizing an authentic audience or your community is incredibly valuable? If you are a teacher, and not using your community to enhance your instruction, YOU ARE MISSING OUT! #masterychat
A4 So critical b/c where you are at this moment is not where you should end up. If you don't know where you are, then you'll wind up in the same spot after having traveled a very long way. You MUST talk to all stakeholders so your perspective isn't the only one #masterychat
A4: Sometimes our students' results meet my preferences, sometimes they don't. But I keep looking at them so I can respond to their "is"ness. #masterychat
A4 I self reflect often and connect with my students and my team to see where we are and if we're heading in the right direction. Is so, keep chugging forward, if not, stop, regroup, and plan a new avenue. Definitely not afraid to ask for help. #MasteryChat
A4 S generated feedback is so important to reaching your destination! Sometimes storms or situations arising causing you to adjust your sails and change your heading!! Monitor the winds and voices of your kids and see what adjustments need to be made to reach harbor. #masterychat
A4: That’s a tough one. On my 3rd principal in 2 years, so I’m hoping to loop with my 6th graders for the next 2 years to make connections with them and their community to find out what they need and how to help them gain mastery. #masterychat
A4: You really need to know your Ss and where they are at currently. You also have to be honest with yourself and know where you are at and areas of growth to benefit your Ss. Communicate with and lean on staff for support through the process. #masterychat
It gives you idea of whether the direction of the class is working. You might have to change something about the journey on the way to the destination. Observations are key as some Ss shy away from honesty that hurts. Anonymous surveys work well. #MasteryChat
Q4: A destination isn't good enough!! A GPS must also know where you are RIGHT NOW in relationship to where you want to go. Why is this critical & how do you do it? #MasteryChat#tlap#LeadLAP
A4) If you know where you are on the course to your destination, you will have a better idea what turns to make along the way. Conversations with Ss and staff go a long way with this! #MasteryChat
Q4: A destination isn't good enough!! A GPS must also know where you are RIGHT NOW in relationship to where you want to go. Why is this critical & how do you do it? #MasteryChat#tlap#LeadLAP
A4 For culture it’s important to check in with Ss. Ask them how they think things are going. Also Ts need to be reflective. For academics, formative assessment is crucial. You need to make course corrections along the way. #MasteryChat
A4: Be open to what assessment is...formative is a check on Ss, Summative is a check on Ts...As Hattie tells us, we always try to measure learning, but do we focus on measuring our impact? #masterychat
A4 No two people are at exact same place. Find out what place that it is by building relationships. Then you will move forward at the speed of trust. #MasteryChat
A4 We have started filling out a form with 1 Q asking what stuck at the end of each class credit to @blueskyschoolca , this way I can see where Ss are. As well we reflect weekly via google form to check in & see what we need to continue or do better. #masterychat
When a teacher tells me they haven't failed in their class recently, I think two things. They are either delusional...or they are playing it too safe. Safe lessons are a recipe for mediocrity. #MasteryChat#tlap
A4: As an admin or a teacher, you need to be present & engaged as well. Talk to your students or staff. Ask them questions, let them speak, and do the most important thing: listen. #masterychat
Q4: A destination isn't good enough!! A GPS must also know where you are RIGHT NOW in relationship to where you want to go. Why is this critical & how do you do it? #MasteryChat#tlap#LeadLAP
A4 You have to know where you are to know what's needed next. Formative assessments and observations give you current data to chart your course. #masterychat
A4: not all Ss are at the same place. It’s important to figure out what you can do to make it better and fit each new day. Talking to Ss that day. Ss body language. Making sure what you’re teaching is relevant to Ss and they can build off of it years later. #masterychat
Q4: A destination isn't good enough!! A GPS must also know where you are RIGHT NOW in relationship to where you want to go. Why is this critical & how do you do it? #MasteryChat#tlap#LeadLAP
A4: Important for communication within a culture of learning. Instructor and Ss articulating their perceptions of where the learning is currently positioned. #MasteryChat
Struggling with tiered supports? Our intervention library is loaded with the best options from @khanacademy and other fabulous resources. We make sure you know the right move to help kiddos who need a little extra! #masterychat
Hit get started!

A4: Before you set out, you need to know where you are starting from. Gathering feedback from students, parents, colleagues, leaders, and community members helps guide you forward. #MasteryChat
Q4: A destination isn't good enough!! A GPS must also know where you are RIGHT NOW in relationship to where you want to go. Why is this critical & how do you do it? #MasteryChat#tlap#LeadLAP
A4. Use formative assessments and other types of feedback as well when working with Ss on learning material. If more time is needed to work in small groups or 1:1. You need to know where you are, your Ss are standing, and where you intend to go! #masterychat
A4 If you don't know where you are, how do you successfully plan the best route to where you need to end? A plan needs to be based in reality. #MasteryChat
Question: What's the best way to get specific feedback from students on my teaching/the year? I've made a lot of mistakes in my first year...but want to see their perspective as we near the end. A little afraid of middle schoolers being rude...:P #MasteryChat
A4: Temperature checks are critical to the success of the individuals and the class. Checking in helps me realize if i need to slow down and reteach or speed up and create challenge! My students chart the course.. not me! #MasteryChat
Q4: A destination isn't good enough!! A GPS must also know where you are RIGHT NOW in relationship to where you want to go. Why is this critical & how do you do it? #MasteryChat#tlap#LeadLAP
Yes, Rae! Reflection is absolutely essential to our craft. We don't need to go back to the drawing board. We need to constantly be at the drawing board. #masterychat#waledchat
A4- It is important to evaluate how you are progressing so you can adjust and improve your plan.Informal conversations, surveys, honest reflections .... It is essential that you have established trust so stakeholders feel safe providing honest feedback. #masterychat
A4: Learning isn’t a “one-sized-fits-all” game, thus diagnosing leaners stepping off point is essential to ensure their journey is most personal / purposeful. #SameProcessWorksForDoctors#masterychat
Q4: A destination isn't good enough!! A GPS must also know where you are RIGHT NOW in relationship to where you want to go. Why is this critical & how do you do it? #MasteryChat#tlap#LeadLAP
A4: Sometimes I feel that Educators/Admin do not accept the reality of our day to day - This causes for false expectations and unreliable support. #MasteryChat
A4: THEIR reality is much more valuable than what we perceive it to be. We are there for THEM. I create Google Form surveys every qtr where they anonymously share their opinions. Some Qs are based on a scale & others are not. It drives my instruction the next qtr #MasteryChat
Q4: A destination isn't good enough!! A GPS must also know where you are RIGHT NOW in relationship to where you want to go. Why is this critical & how do you do it? #MasteryChat#tlap#LeadLAP
A4: Reflection is critical to learning. Self + peer assessments help students to pause. Regular feedback to the teacher models assessment + learning for all. It’s a journey, sometimes a look back does wonders. #masterychat
A4 How can you reach Ss where they are if you don't know where they are? You must use data WISELY, not just to collect data. You must preassess & then USE those results to plan instruction. You must formative assess & then USE those results to plan next steps #masterychat
A4: The RIGHT NOW is so important as it is your school's context, and it I this context that must be considered in determining what is needed in order to get where you want to go. #MasteryChat
A4: We can recenter our GPS by self-checking and asking the students we serve along the course to do the same. I'm a disoriented mama, and I'm always getting lost! I constantly ask my kids in the car to help me look around and find my way. So we must ask our Ss! #MasteryChat
I always tell my students "We're learning together" when we try new things. It helps them feel more comfortable to take risks because I am taking one too. #MasteryChat
Q2 is up! Let's create a five word "GPS"... If your students had to describe their experience in your class/school in five words, what would you want them to be? #MasterChat
A4 (pt2) being thrown off course, but not adjusting (altering the timing, products, process, etc)and not hearing the voices of your Ss will certainly cause you to loose sight of your destination... possibly run aground !! #masterychat
A4 without knowing where you are it’s like a stab in the dark. Only recently have I really been in the light and it has opened my eyes like never before. Reflection has been a huge part of things becoming more clear. #MasteryChat
I agree...each year my class is different. I have to change how I present content, what activities we do, the pace, even classroom management strategies. #MasteryChat
A4: You can't engage students if you don't know where they are or what interests them. Understanding their positions, views, needs are necessary! Get to know them! #masterychat
A5 Take the temperature of the school and take into consideration the current climate. Be honest and reflective... what will work, what could you try, what needs to be improved, what is working, let go of the bad, make room for the good!!#MasteryChat
Question: What's the best way to get specific feedback from students on my teaching/the year? I've made a lot of mistakes in my first year...but want to see their perspective as we near the end. A little afraid of middle schoolers being rude...:P #MasteryChat
Q5: We have ALL taken a few wrong educational turns in our time! I have taken a TON of them! How do you "Recalculate" and "Reroute" to a better path when this happens? #MasteryChat#tlap#LeadLAP
That sweet spot is tricky. Challenging enough to stretch, yet accessible enough to, well, be accessed.
That is why I love mastery learning & S paced learning, because it lets me provide those tiered learning experiences that Ss NEED at the level they need them! #Masterychat
A4: Kidwatch (and parent-watch.) Listen well. Eavesdrop just a bit. Ask open-ended questions. Talk with kids - not at them. Document your noticings to reflect on more in-depth later. #MasteryChat
Perhaps. I think I read it, too. It crossed my mind as I wrote it. But I don't know that I agree buy-in is a bad thing. Especially when you're working with community-led change. I suppose it's a much dirtier word if it's top-down. #masterychat
@burgessdave A4: constant reflection for both Ts and Ss. Meaningful feedback and time to analyze. A way to gauge their own progress, gauge skills they need to work on, and of course celebrate success of their growth. #MasteryChat
Yes! Great point here Jessica! Student Reflection is an enormous element of Mastery Learning! #masterychat
How can we ensure this occurs often in the classroom?
Q5: We have ALL taken a few wrong educational turns in our time! I have taken a TON of them! How do you "Recalculate" and "Reroute" to a better path when this happens? #MasteryChat#tlap#LeadLAP
It is impossible to make informed decisions about how to reach your destination if you don't know where you are!! A GPS needs a destination and a real time accurate reading of current reality! #MAsteryChat
A5 - Focus on SOLUTIONS. Always focus on solving problems or issues before you worry too much about the why. Put the fire out before worrying who started it. If you always focus on finding solutions they will come. #masterychat
So true. I formatively assess every single day. I have a touch point with every student every day so I have an immediate understanding of what they need and where we need to go.
#MasteryChat
A5 I love this one. I am real with the students. We assess where we went rogue. We make a plan to get back on the Highway. It is collaborative. #masterychat
Q5: We have ALL taken a few wrong educational turns in our time! I have taken a TON of them! How do you "Recalculate" and "Reroute" to a better path when this happens? #MasteryChat#tlap#LeadLAP
Q5: We have ALL taken a few wrong educational turns in our time! I have taken a TON of them! How do you "Recalculate" and "Reroute" to a better path when this happens? #MasteryChat#tlap#LeadLAP
#masterychat a4 Call me old fashioned yet I have realised I need the face to face to touch base with my colleagues/fellow students, to figure out where we are on the GPS of the learning journey
A5: refocus on the vision/goal and then take the necessary steps to keep moving in that direction. Take a breath, let go of what happened/got off track and keep driving forward! #masterychat
Q5: We have ALL taken a few wrong educational turns in our time! I have taken a TON of them! How do you "Recalculate" and "Reroute" to a better path when this happens? #MasteryChat#tlap#LeadLAP
A5 Reflect, get feedback from people you value, and get back to basics. Why are you here? What do you want? How can you get there? Who can help you along the way? #masterychat
Q5: We have ALL taken a few wrong educational turns in our time! I have taken a TON of them! How do you "Recalculate" and "Reroute" to a better path when this happens? #MasteryChat#tlap#LeadLAP
I agree whole heartedly. Building leader can stifle/encourage innovation. Ts are fragile & failure is part of living with courage. As long as Ts find ways to fail forward, no worries! #MasteryChat
A5 -I fess up and change it. However, it is go to note when you are onto something. I was speaking with a fellow teacher and I told her I was worried about a certain process in my class and she said, "It works. Keep it." It is good to take that kind of advice as well #masterychat
A5 Even as a very young T, I continuously remind myself of my passion & purpose. I absolutely love being w/ my Ss & I want them to always know that. Be true to yourself & remember your calling! #masterychat
A5: As a student teacher, I am honest with myself and know that I have better days than others. I try to pause and admit that I made a mistake if I catch it right away and aim to do better next time. Our Ss need to see that, as teachers, we are also human. #masterychat
A5- I engage my classes in the recalibration. I endear myself to my students with my mistakes, model growth mindset and help them diagnose where we or I went off course and work together to put us back on track. #MasteryChat
A5: Always take a moment to breathe and reconnect with your VISION. This is why it is essential that you know where you are headed to. Life is a journey filled with traffic jams and detours. We need to be prepared with a response when we lose our way. #masterychat
Q5: We have ALL taken a few wrong educational turns in our time! I have taken a TON of them! How do you "Recalculate" and "Reroute" to a better path when this happens? #MasteryChat#tlap#LeadLAP
A5: Definitely do some back tracking on my course, retrace steps through self reflection, student reviews of lessons they give me, talking to peers for advice and help, and being vulnerable enough to call a friend to pick me up if stranded! #MasteryChat
A4: So you can identify next steps, decide whether you need to evaluate and modify your plan, know your restrictions and opportunities, and to seek help! #MasteryChat
A5: This happens all the time! I talk with the student 1:1 to figure out what isn't working and if they are headed in the right directions. We frequently change course, and that is ok. I just remind them that we can go wherever they want, as long as it is forward :) #masterychat
Q5: We have ALL taken a few wrong educational turns in our time! I have taken a TON of them! How do you "Recalculate" and "Reroute" to a better path when this happens? #MasteryChat#tlap#LeadLAP
A5: I would first consider what has changed since I was last successful. If nothing (the same won’t always work forever), I would expand my horizons, gather new ideas, and reach out to others to try new methods until success is regained. #MasteryChat
There is nothing wrong with a failed lesson...we have all had them. The problem is failing the same way again. You have to reflect and accept the feedback and make a shift in course. #MasteryChat
“Talk with ‘em not at ‘em.” That’s perfect. I can’t lie. I used to suck at that. Then I made it a point to improve, and the result was more of a relationship with whole classes and so much more engagement. #MasteryChat
A5: Remember the goal, where I want to end up, & focus on how to get there. It's so easy to focus on the problem - focus on the solution - that's the important part. #masterychat
A5: Reflection and feedback. You have to look at where you're at and how you got there, and if you're not where you want to be (or where your Ss need to be), it's time to recalculate. Ask your Ss, assess what's working and what's not, and make changes. #MasteryChat
Again, developing a community of Learners that gather for study, exploration, discovery, and hard work - isn’t that the way of the Pirate??? #masterychat
A5: I analyze what exactly went wrong, set my new starting point, and move on. Then I reflect on what I could have done to avoid the wrong turn in the first place. Just as we model success, it’s important to model failure. It’s a healthy part of the learning process. #masterychat
A5 GPS provides immediate feedback when you head off course. Timely, relevant feedback always important in learning and shifting direction when needed. #masterychat
if we are truly connected with our students and authentic...our students will partner with us naturally to get back on course. We are a learning TEAM. #masterychat
A5: REFLECT! Ask myself and my Ss. #PBL is the perfect opportunity to exhaust when lost on Tia side road of learning. Again, when you know your destination you can manage to pull the wheel back to the center. #Nan3EDU#MasteryChat
A5 PLN. When I feel of course or if something is missing, I turn to my closest people for help. I need a sounding board,I sometimes need people who just check in and share a thought that will just send me in the right direction. Support, time, encouragement. #masterychat
Q5: We have ALL taken a few wrong educational turns in our time! I have taken a TON of them! How do you "Recalculate" and "Reroute" to a better path when this happens? #MasteryChat#tlap#LeadLAP
It helps that she is looking over my shoulder every Thursday night and helping me decide what to write for #masterychat. She has great teachers with all of you. The best #PLN in the twitterverse if you ask me!
A5 being off course takes you on new journeys which I have started to embrace. Sometimes it takes you on a new adventures so I recalculate by changing the destination. #MasteryChat
(1) Reflect with Colleagues
(2) Connect with my #PLN
(3) Pick up a New Edu Book for Inspiration
(4) Collaborate with other Educators on New Ideas
(5) Spend just a little more time with Family
#masterychat
Q5: We have ALL taken a few wrong educational turns in our time! I have taken a TON of them! How do you "Recalculate" and "Reroute" to a better path when this happens? #MasteryChat#tlap#LeadLAP
A5 I take feedback from my students, coworkers, admin, etc. I also research a lot and enjoying trying new things. I think about where my Ss want to go, where I want to take them, and where I want to take myself and I plan through research and observation. #MasteryChat
Q5: We have ALL taken a few wrong educational turns in our time! I have taken a TON of them! How do you "Recalculate" and "Reroute" to a better path when this happens? #MasteryChat#tlap#LeadLAP
A5) Once I reflect and know what supports are needed, I can step in to guide student learning in a different direction: small group- one on one- partner led - or individual- providing resources to students to meet this need #masterychat
A5. If I get off course, I seek feedback. It's hard to hear feedback, but it makes it easier for me when get it from colleagues who I know (and trust) are trying to help me get better as an educator. #masterychat
A4/5 I ask my students for feedback. Their perception is sometimes different from mine and they often have great ideas to get back on track. Their solutions = their motivation to make it work. #masterychat
Agreed. It is easy to dismiss a child's point of view, but best for the community if you listen to what they need to say and try and help them where you can. It makes the whole school/community stronger. #masterychat
A5 - I’m a firm believer in brain breaks. People frequently speak about them, but they can be of incredible value. When things aren’t going as planned, we take a short active break and re-evaluate our outcomes and tasks. This is both student and teacher #masterychat
It is! It's so easy to stay within our comfort zone but I know that I'm not doing my Ss any good if I don't take risks - I always tell them we're trying it together & it won't be perfect, we're learning as we go, we're in it together, & their feedback is important! #masterychat
A5: For me it is about being honest and asking yourself why the wrong turn was taken. Having a coach or mentor to help give feedback has helped me to "recalculate" my direction. #MasteryChat
A5- When you make a mistake you have to be honest with yourself and your team. Pointing fingers or laying blame does no good. Reflection, acceptance, and trying to figure out what YOU can do better next time are all better ways to handle a mistake...yet it is harder! #masterychat
A5: So essential for student voice -- the instructor may not know that the instruction has gone off the rails. When Ss can provide real-time feedback on pedagogical effectiveness, everyone benefits. #MasteryChat
Pirates don't yell at the wind. They don't cuss at it. They don't get mad at it. They READ it, adjust their sails, and move forward to the treasure. Student feedback is the wind of our classes. Read it and adjust the sails! #MasteryChat#tlap
A5: Sometimes I just turn around and do it all over again. Other times, I take an alternate route! :) I am thinking like a driver now haha #Masterychat
A5: If you get off course, REFOCUS and remember your goal. You have to have a one track mind...what’s best for kids first...with that in mind, you can get back on the right path. There will always be distraction and minutiae. Keep your focus #MasteryChat
A5: Take time to reflect and figure out what I need to do to get back on track. What am I missing? What do I need to change? What does it take to get there? Questions I ask myself from time to time. #masterychat
A5: it honestly depends on how I got off track and what got me off track. If Ss don’t understanding the lesson, ask. Maybe it is still difficult for them. Or, did something happen. If Ss are worried about something/someone, that needs to be addressed 1st. #MasteryChat
A5: If I am teaching at the time, I try to name it and then try something different. In therapy, I use it as an opportunity to notice my errors and then invite change. Hopefully, we end up somewhere near flexibility and resilience as our final destination. #masterychat
A5 Gather data, feedback and reflect on what to do next. Before we had GPS, we would pull over and look at our map. There is value in stopping and assessing, instead of driving blindly around hoping things will turn out ok. #MasteryChat
A5. Sometimes it's incorporating problem solving into the picture to figure out what went wrong! Looking at various parameters and seeing what can be changed in order to achieve success when redone. Asking Ss for opinions, changing a lesson to meet the needs of Ss. #masterychat
Q5: Get feedback from Ss. Sometimes we think things went well and Ss have a different opinion. Using Google form after lesson helps me tweak lesson and maximize effectiveness. #MasteryChat
Apologize! You don't think about that, but sometimes it is good to let students know that its ok to mess up and you are not less of a person if you say you are sorry. #masterychat
There's a camping saying - all who wander are not lost - reflection and talking to Ss helps you realize the wandering is their process to get to the destination not a detraction #masterychat
A5) I try to better understand where there might have been confusion or misunderstandings, and address it from that angle. Then, I try to determine "how else" I can get there. Am I lacking resources? Do I need different strategies? What other way can I tackle this? #masterychat
Pirates don't yell at the wind. They don't cuss at it. They don't get mad at it. They READ it, adjust their sails, and move forward to the treasure. Student feedback is the wind of our classes. Read it and adjust the sails! #MasteryChat#tlap
I love this! Take ownership of your mistakes & know it's okay to make them! This is EXACTLY what we tell our Ss - why wouldn't we model that too! #masterychat
A5: Figure out what you can learn from it anyway as the T. Give it another try, but in a different way. Get feedback from Ss. Ask myself, how can this be better, different? Find something new and fresh! Ask the Ss what they need. #masterychat
Q5: We have ALL taken a few wrong educational turns in our time! I have taken a TON of them! How do you "Recalculate" and "Reroute" to a better path when this happens? #MasteryChat#tlap#LeadLAP
In higher ed, many profs have tough time admitting deficiencies. It takes authentic self-assessment to admit errors in instruction and the humility to change course. #MasteryChat
A5 Realize you made a mistake, reflect, and retry. Give yourself a break. Ask for suggestions from your students they might have a good suggestion #masterychat
A5b: I have at points stopped and asked the students if they have a better way to share what they know. I have seen some pretty awesome products created by giving them the power! #masterychat
I come out to the students and let them know that we are off track. I then tell them where we need to be and the steps we will take the get there. They often love the honesty and respect that I noticed and am trying to fix the issue. #MasteryChat
A5: 1st you acknowledge you took a wrong turn and it’s OKAY. Then look at your surroundings & find a way back to the path. When we go rogue in class & make a wrong turn, I turn it into a “failing is not failure” opportunity. Try again. Learning can sometimes be messy #MasteryChat
A5) Reflect on the lesson, conversation, or interaction that clearly did not go as planned. Review the process and identify the what did not work or perhaps the missing piece and try again. #masterychat
Q5: We have ALL taken a few wrong educational turns in our time! I have taken a TON of them! How do you "Recalculate" and "Reroute" to a better path when this happens? #MasteryChat#tlap#LeadLAP
A5 I love trying new things in teaching & yes, some of them are epic failures.
When it happens, it is simply a matter of stopping, reflecting, & pivoting. It doesn't have to be rocket science. You just have to be willing to change what needs to be changed. #masterychat
A5: I talk with my team/community so we can get back on course! This means talking with my Ss and any staff necessary to support them in their success. I own up to my mistakes and show them how to work through them. #masterychat
Always keep that attitude & don't let the teachers you meet that become cynical & disenchanted pull you down into that Misery Loves Company type of attitude! I have been teaching close to 17 years & I still think the way you just said! It will keep you happy & SANE! #MasteryChat
Yep, I've learned a whole lot more, literally while biting my lips. It gets easier over time, I promise. My kids and I are a whole lot happier when we're engaged in their ideas on how we can all meet our vision than in some of the engagements I create on my own. #MasteryChat
A5 breathe. {possibly, cry} breathe. be calm. focus. focus. adjust your sails. trim the jib. look at and to others {your PLN} for support & guidance. adjust your instruction, your tone, or conviction- but never your message or passion .. and try again. focus..and try #masterychat
Pirates don't yell at the wind. They don't cuss at it. They don't get mad at it. They READ it, adjust their sails, and move forward to the treasure. Student feedback is the wind of our classes. Read it and adjust the sails! #MasteryChat#tlap
A5: Reflection and Revision are Key! When it happens, thinking about why and how to redo / make it more successful. Learners can help when you share goals. #masterychat
True. As a principal, I reflect on everything I do. Sometimes as simple as asking a teacher, “how was that meeting?” So important to me to get immediate feedback #MasteryChat
A5: Collaborate to develop another plan! It’s like the Engineering Design Process where you go back and plan/improve as many times as necessary to achieve growth and progress! #masterychat
We are using @thegridmethod which requires my students to reflect and goal set every day. While it took practice to make it a permanent habit, I don't know where we would be without the time to reflect - individually and with stakeholders. #masterychat
A5: Reflection, reflection, and reflection! I think about the process and what adjustments need to be made to improve. I always seek to understand where the students are coming from, too! #MasteryChat
Q5: We have ALL taken a few wrong educational turns in our time! I have taken a TON of them! How do you "Recalculate" and "Reroute" to a better path when this happens? #MasteryChat#tlap#LeadLAP
I'm trying so hard to get my kids to do this more, but it's suuuuch a struggle. They see it as a hurdle to jump over and a waste of time rather than the amazing opportunity it actually is #masterychat
Q6: We all face roadblocks, obstacles, construction, & detours on our educational journeys!! What is standing in between YOU and YOUR destination right now and how can you bypass it? #MasteryChat#tlap#LeadLAP
A5: Build reflection into your daily routine. Always be willing to reevaluate and change. Consider a different mindset: sometimes going off course is the best way to learn. #masterychat
A major issue is the constant obsession with future readiness. Ss are never given an opportunity to absorb or reflect on the present (unless it’s a 5 minute assessment activity). Give students #geniushour time and help them find their passions. #masterychat#tlap#leadlap
Q4: A destination isn't good enough!! A GPS must also know where you are RIGHT NOW in relationship to where you want to go. Why is this critical & how do you do it? #MasteryChat#tlap#LeadLAP
Pirates don't yell at the wind. They don't cuss at it. They don't get mad at it. They READ it, adjust their sails, and move forward to the treasure. Student feedback is the wind of our classes. Read it and adjust the sails! #MasteryChat#tlap
A5: Remind yourself that mistakes aren’t punishable life sentences. Admit it when you’ve made them. Recognize when certain environments did not bring out the best in you. Have faith in the unknown and take risks to find a better path. #masterychat#tlap#leadlap
Q6: We all face roadblocks, obstacles, construction, & detours on our educational journeys!! What is standing in between YOU and YOUR destination right now and how can you bypass it? #MasteryChat#tlap#LeadLAP
A5b - I tend to watch and listen to students more than talk. If they are talking about playing “fortnite” and not our learning, I know it’s time to chart a new course of action. #masterychat
A5b) I recently used BlendSpace with my students from @Tes_Teach. I can build in quiz checkpoints. Which will give me data to know when I need to pause the gps and correct and help guide my students better #masterychat
A5: Zoom out + remember where you are heading. Sometimes side quests add value. Sometimes you get lost + have to go back + try again. Find out what others have done, look for clues, + try again. #failfast#masterychat
So inspired by all of you tonight. Thanks for lifting my spirits. You are all the reason my passion for teaching is burning strong on a daily basis. #masterychat
A1: (1st time listener, 1st time caller) A vision for my class helps me stay focused when I’m teaching. If I know the end goal, I can plan the steps to get me there. #MasteryChat#tlap
Q6: We all face roadblocks, obstacles, construction, & detours on our educational journeys!! What is standing in between YOU and YOUR destination right now and how can you bypass it? #MasteryChat#tlap#LeadLAP
A4 Knowing where you are right now helps determine where you need to go. Conversations with teachers and PD can help to move schools in the right direction. #MasteryChat
A5: I turn to Twitter because I get defeated. But then I see what my PLN is up to that day or read a blog, and I either punt and start over, adjust, talk it out, or put it aside. But I try to give myself grace. Notice I said try. #MasteryChat
So glad to have you with us, Laura! It is a pretty amazing group of educators that come together every Thursday night. Welcome to the club. :) #Masterychat
A5) When I find that I'm off cpurse, I go back to my goal to see if I am close or way off. Either I make a small adjustment or big, depending. #masterychat
A2
#MasteryChat
A mission allows students to know what the expectation is for the year and you can plan as a family the tools you are going to use to get their.
#tlap
A5: REFLECT! Ask myself and my Ss. #PBL is the perfect opportunity to adjust when lost on the side road of learning. Again, when you know your destination you can manage to pull the wheel back to the center. #Nan3EDU#MasteryChat
Q5: Collaboration and reflection with your team or peers is very helpful when you want to get back on course. Just have to make sure you are playing on the right team. #masterychat
A5: Even in my 20th year, this happens often. I regroup by reflecting, refocusing and planning. I usually share that process with my students because I want them to see that teachers struggle too. #masterychat
Q5: We have ALL taken a few wrong educational turns in our time! I have taken a TON of them! How do you "Recalculate" and "Reroute" to a better path when this happens? #MasteryChat#tlap#LeadLAP
A6 Data reflections used to stand in the way...I decided to teach with genuine intention and direction, the results were better data than when data was my focus. I win! #masterychat
Q6: We all face roadblocks, obstacles, construction, & detours on our educational journeys!! What is standing in between YOU and YOUR destination right now and how can you bypass it? #MasteryChat#tlap#LeadLAP
Reflect, but also be honest with students. They appreciate your sincerity and you demonstrate how to fail well (as they should too!) Have them help YOU make an awesome recalculation. #masterychat#edchat
Q5: We have ALL taken a few wrong educational turns in our time! I have taken a TON of them! How do you "Recalculate" and "Reroute" to a better path when this happens? #MasteryChat#tlap#LeadLAP
A6: Sadly, I tend to be my own worst enemy. I doubt my calling. I doubt my abilities. I doubt the story that I have in my heart. Thankful for @megan_hacholski and @MrPStrunk who serve as guardrails and help keep me on the road, moving forward. #masterychat
Q6: We all face roadblocks, obstacles, construction, & detours on our educational journeys!! What is standing in between YOU and YOUR destination right now and how can you bypass it? #MasteryChat#tlap#LeadLAP
Q6: We all face roadblocks, obstacles, construction, & detours on our educational journeys!! What is standing in between YOU and YOUR destination right now and how can you bypass it? #MasteryChat#tlap#LeadLAP
A6: Fear of failure is my biggest. I have adopted @ERobbPrincipal's plan for this year. When my gut says "don't do it, it'll be too challenging," I immediately say "Okay I'll do it!" Has led to innovation and higher student engagement! #masterychat
I am always saying that I have been fortunate enough to have failed A LOT...because I have learned so much from every single failure. And they've all lead to my wins! Love it! #MasteryChat
And what a wonderful opportunity for them to see US persevering, cultivating a growth mindset, getting frustrated but not giving up. In my class, we celebrate failure as the first step to awesomeness. Even when it the teacher that has a less than stellar day. #masterychat
A5. An important part of this is admitting to students that I made a mistake or that I feel a lesson didn't go well. I apologize. We share the pros/cons and often they want to make me feel better. #masterychat
A6: time and fear. How will I overcome them? Intentionally schedule time on my calendar to do the things that I’m not sure about doing- just take the first step and start! #masterychat
A6: I am working part time right now on FMLA because we just got a foster daughter at 4 days old! I am so glad to be spending some days at home with her until she is old enough for daycare, but it is KILLING me not to be able to work with my students everyday! #MasteryChat
#masterychat.A5: Ask questions to self - what do I need to change? Why the wrong turn, what went wrong? Ask questions to the Ss - Was your learning affected in any way? How has your learning been affected? Has your learning thus far been able to meet your dreams, needs & ability?
A6) Student motivation or fear of failure. We have to reinforce the idea that risk taking is good and is a part of the process of learning and becoming a better learner and leader #masterychat
A6 testing season where so many talk and pressure is all about a test....plan learning activities that are fun and relaxing while learning. laugh every day #masterychat
I didn't get the first teaching position I applied for and was heartbroken. Two months later, I applied to another one that was a much better fit, and ultimately led me to being a principal 18 years later! #masterychat
A6 Worry. Plain old worry about time, about what others will say, about how to even get started. I need to learn some more about what I want to do, get my ideas out there, reconnect with my marigolds, and take the leap! #masterychat
A6: Yesterday after not getting that position, I felt defeated and hurt, but I realized that I needed to find a school that is Twitter loving and wants to help me be the best teacher I can be. Sometimes, plans derail for a reason. #masterychat
A6 testing season where so many talk and pressure is all about a test....plan learning activities that are fun and relaxing while learning. laugh every day #masterychat
A5: I reflect about what happened and when do I feel that students were lost. I have also discussed the previous lesson and day with Ss to get their feedback. I believe that their feedback is really important. Then, I try a different approach. #MasteryChat
Ultimately you need to take those wrong turns & reflect on them. What went wrong & what did you learn from it. We reflect as a class to figure out how we can head down the right path. #masterychat
What an awesome use of a tech tool to IMPROVE education, teaching, and learning. You must get some amazing feedback through this! Thanks for sharing. #Masterychat#TeachBetter#edtech
Q5: Get feedback from Ss. Sometimes we think things went well and Ss have a different opinion. Using Google form after lesson helps me tweak lesson and maximize effectiveness. #MasteryChat
A6 - 1 common roadblock I see is “tradition” or “we’ve always done it this way”. This is a broken way to move any classroom forward and must be changed. Being willing to take risks, try new things, and explore new solutions to issues is paramount to teacher success! #masterychat
A5: 1st - eat chocolate. 2nd - gather my peeps - those I adore who are willing to have hard convos w me. 3: heed their feedback. 4. Put my big girl pants on & hit it again. No time to wallow. Let’s go!!! #masterychat
A6: Time. & the fact that what I try to do is so different than what they are used to. I spend a lot of time working through the initial frustration. #masterychat
A6 - Grades, previous assessment ideas, diverse population of learners.
Focus on the process, instead of a letter or number. Change the mindset of what a passionate learner and teacher looks and acts like. Provide choice for students so most can see change. #masterychat
A6: People making six figures+ who are making decisions about educating children when they have little or no experience teaching at all! Shut my door and do what I know (w/ 33 yrs. experience) is best for kids! #MasteryChat
Q6: We all face roadblocks, obstacles, construction, & detours on our educational journeys!! What is standing in between YOU and YOUR destination right now and how can you bypass it? #MasteryChat#tlap#LeadLAP
A6: Road blocks for me are making mistakes. Sometimes it’s hard for me to forget and move. Even more so, I worry that those above me don’t allow one to move on. It’s important to have administrators who allow teachers to make mistakes and create that culture. #MasteryChat
A5. Knowing that teaching changes daily with new learning and formative assessment... those formatives change the game for Ss as they begin to own their learning through feedback. #masterychat
A6: The day-to-day management tasks get in the way. Leaky ceiling, state testing, meetings...just need to keep your bearings, keep smiling and get the job done. We have the best job in the world. We always need to remember we are in it for the kids! #MasteryChat
A6 roadblocks come in many different packages, both tangible and intangible-break down those roadblocks and barriers by focusing on achieving your goals- block out the negative, focus on the positive, work with what you have, don't worry about what you don't have #MasteryChat
Q6: We all face roadblocks, obstacles, construction, & detours on our educational journeys!! What is standing in between YOU and YOUR destination right now and how can you bypass it? #MasteryChat#tlap#LeadLAP
A5 While your GPS is recalculating, checkout you other resources. Sometimes you have to rely on old methods (map, compass, another pirate) while you get back on track. #MasteryChat
A6 Right now time is the biggest roadblock. I am just coming off medical leave do to surgery. I am going to have to rebuild our community first (major course correction) #MasteryChat
A6 - Weirdly enough right now, I feel like I am my own roadblock. I have so much support from my admin, teachers, and community to do new things, I am limited by my own imagination and time. I am excited for extended planning time this summer. #masterychat
Everyone has obstacles. Every. Single. Person. So now what? Crush complacency. Bash barriers. Overcome obstacles. Nobody likes lukewarm. Go be on FIRE about this stuff. Mediocrity doesn't motivate. #MasteryChat#tlap#LeadLAP
A6 The right driving force or opportunity is sometimes lacking. The hope or possibility to open doors is not always open. So you take a breath, follow the path that is there and make it your own. Trailblaze, sretch the box, knock down roadblocks. No excuses. Just GO! #masterychat
Q6: We all face roadblocks, obstacles, construction, & detours on our educational journeys!! What is standing in between YOU and YOUR destination right now and how can you bypass it? #MasteryChat#tlap#LeadLAP
A5: Honestly, I do all of the above. There is usually a lot of self-talk involved. And even though I don’t exercise on a regular basis, going for a walk alone and thinking really helps me recenter myself and reflect. #tlap#masterychat#alwayslearning
A6- I find one of biggest obstacles is the desire to fix everything and do too much...establishing priorities can help me focus on what is important and help prevent me from spinning my wheels. #masterychat
Agreed. The key is the start up process. So often, humans do not appreciate constructive criticism. What do you do to help folks accept it? #MasteryChat
A6: I want to speed through and do everything, all at once, all the time! Sometimes I need to slow down for the sake of my Ss. S motivation and getting them to see there is so much more! Trying harder and making better connections and relationships. #masterychat
Q6: We all face roadblocks, obstacles, construction, & detours on our educational journeys!! What is standing in between YOU and YOUR destination right now and how can you bypass it? #MasteryChat#tlap#LeadLAP
A6 Big roadblocks are systemic inequities and prioritizing “optics” over genuine learning. Best we can do is to keep bending the arc toward justice. #MasteryChat
A6: I am the only one that can hold myself back. Yes, sometimes life places extreme obstacles in the way but if people can fight their way our of war zones, poverty, abuse, and horrible events in life I can get off my rear and make things happen, even if I fail! #MasteryChat
A6: There are always distractions and obstacles. I always ask myself if getting upset about them is "saving" me from a bigger challenge: that of creating an awesome school for my students. #masterychat
A6: At times it is Me! Trying to execute what I think would be amazing but on that day... at that time... it isn’t for my Ss. I read my Ss continuously and if my way is roadblocking them they know their voice will be heard! #MasteryChat#Nan3EDU
Sometimes you just have to leap- even when you don't know all the details, even when the path is unsure, even when there are questions to be answered. Don't go in blind, but GO IN!
Could it fail? Yup. Could it change the world? Yes.
I know what I choose. :) #MasteryChat
A6: Fear of the unknown can be combatted by reframing for the positive & staying solution-focused. 💫When & where HAVE I already succeeded?! How can I recreate that process again now? #MasteryChat
A6. My biggest roadblock is a rigid curriculum with prescribed tasks and tests that I don't agree with. I am still trying to figure out how to bypass this. So far I am honest with the kids and we do our best to make lemonade with those lemons. #masterychat
A6: This May vary at times but some roadblocks may be prior knowledge/vocabulary for students including ESLearners, lack of resources, lack of time in a day! #masterychat
A6: I, too, am working part-time without a guaranteed position next year. I am optimistic for a future position in which I can once again establish meaningful relationships with students and their families. #masterychat#tlap#leadlap
A6 - 1 common roadblock I see is “tradition” or “we’ve always done it this way”. This is a broken way to move any classroom forward and must be changed. Being willing to take risks, try new things, and explore new solutions to issues is paramount to teacher success! #masterychat
A6: Sometimes the rules stand in the way. Or others' expectations. Quite frankly I have to remind myself why I started so I don't make obstacles bigger than they appear. #Masterychat
Q6: We all face roadblocks, obstacles, construction, & detours on our educational journeys!! What is standing in between YOU and YOUR destination right now and how can you bypass it? #MasteryChat#tlap#LeadLAP
A6 Where do I start..# 1 GRADES, time constraints (only having Ss for 75 mins a day), bells, 4 walls, rules, constantly feeling like I have to justify my practice.... #masterychat
A6: Honestly, the only roadblock to the destination is myself and my own fears and anxiety. And the way to bypass it is to keep moving forward no matter what, because our kids are worth it. #MasteryChat
I feel this way a lot of the time as well. Going too fast to get all the cool information out of my head right now and into their head as soon as I possibly can. #masterychat
Dave in Lloydminster, Saskatchewan, Canada, praying for the green and gold in Humboldt this week. Joining late but ready to continue learning. #masterychat
Important that trust is part of the equation. People are more willing to peer review when they know that the partner wants what's is best for them. #masterychat
Agreed. The key is the start up process. So often, humans do not appreciate constructive criticism. What do you do to help folks accept it? #MasteryChat
A6: Time, deadlines, things beyond our control that steal our Ss attention (ex: students dealing w/ other things at home), and “Debbie Downers”. That’s why relationships are SO important. Believe you can and surround yourself with others that have the same mentality. #MasteryChat
Yes!!! We are blessed as merchants of hope and serve as a new wind in seemingly tattered sails. We rebuild, shift, mold, and allow Ss to see the vision we have for them that they have yet to dream for themselves. #masterychat
Q6: Negativity from those that don't understand the need for change. The only way to bypass is to keep showing WHY the change is necessary and the positive impact it has on our Ss. #MasteryChat
A6: I’m just trying to push past any obstacles & have a positive outlook from here on out. It used to be...”What will others think?” Or “Can they handle it with their social/emotional needs?” The answer is...I’m going to do what’s best for my Ss & their needs. #masterychat
A6: Changes to the schedule and other colleagues’ mentality about technology. I have learned that I should just trust my own instinct and do what I do best with my Ss. #MasteryChat
A6: One thing to help with not having enough time is teaching my students to take ownership of some of the class responsibilities, including taking their own data. #masterychat
A6 - Grades, previous assessment ideas, diverse population of learners.
Focus on the process, instead of a letter or number. Change the mindset of what a passionate learner and teacher looks and acts like. Provide choice for students so most can see change. #masterychat
Q7: Time to COMMIT!!! What is ONE THING you will do THIS next week to get you closer to your destination? I plan to straight up check on some of you! #MasteryChat#tlap#LeadLAP
We don’t need more time. We need to be more purposeful with what we have. 😉 Too often we use time as an excuse, because we assume that the time I’m currently using can’t change. But time IS the variable. #masterychat
A6 🤔 I think maybe nothing is standing in my way...I think the road is mine to travel and my course is set and it is up to me to stay the course {make teeeny adjustments} and see myself through to my destination! I think I am on the right road to the right location #masterychat
Q7: Time to COMMIT!!! What is ONE THING you will do THIS next week to get you closer to your destination? I plan to straight up check on some of you! #MasteryChat#tlap#LeadLAP
A6 In MS I feel like all there are is roadblocks and obstacles. Ss mostly get in their own way. By the time we start to figure it out, the year is over. I just keep building bridges, ramps and paths to help them get around it if they choose to take the steps #MasteryChat
A6: Most of my road blocks are of my own making. I am kind of used to it by now. I'd like to think that I am getting better at it, but sometimes I just learn to make new kinds of mistakes. The worst is when I repeat my mistakes. Those hurt the most. #masterychat
A7: Tomorrow (okay not next week) I will be presenting at my first conference. Nervous, but excited for the opportunity to share my message! #masterychat
Q7: Time to COMMIT!!! What is ONE THING you will do THIS next week to get you closer to your destination? I plan to straight up check on some of you! #MasteryChat#tlap#LeadLAP
A6. Continuing to model syrong work ethic in the face of behaviour roadblocks always helps re-route the classroom management roadblocks. Relentless modelling and re-setting for every kid every day!!! #masterychat
A7: I have committed to help several teachers become more connected educators! I am excited to help them build their #PLN and grow as professionals #MasteryChat
Since grades are due, I've put myself into "finalization isolation." I need to be a little more collaborate this upcoming week to ensure that all of our students excel. #masterychat
A7: schedule specific time with high need S’s and schedule time in classrooms for counseling lessons- sending an email now to see what times T’s have available 👍 #masterychat
A6: Feeling overwhelmed. There is so much to “teach”. Yes, a curriculum, but also SES, life lessons, and being honest. Everything is a teachable moment and we are the role models. At times, I doubt myself too but remind myself #masterychat
A7: Get to know my Ss better and talk to them one on one. Maybe set up a way I can conference with them. Also, handle behavior problems in a more positive way. Encourage my Ss. #masterychat
Q7: Time to COMMIT!!! What is ONE THING you will do THIS next week to get you closer to your destination? I plan to straight up check on some of you! #MasteryChat#tlap#LeadLAP
A6 Maybe this is cheating. Or maybe I am just naive.
So much opportunity in ed right now. So much community building & conversations happening. So many innovators & change makers.
No matter how treacherous the path- I believe we can get there together. #YouRock#masterychat
A7: Stay the course completing our final projects, hold tight with my kiddos in tough winds (our PARCC state testing), and sail smooth waters until we reach our destination - THE LAST DAY OF SCHOOL! #MasteryChat#GRIT
Q7: Time to COMMIT!!! What is ONE THING you will do THIS next week to get you closer to your destination? I plan to straight up check on some of you! #MasteryChat#tlap#LeadLAP
A7: I plan on having confidence and hopefully doing well at my interview on Monday for an 8th grade math position. This will lead me one step closer to achieving my lifelong dream. #masterychat
Q7: Time to COMMIT!!! What is ONE THING you will do THIS next week to get you closer to your destination? I plan to straight up check on some of you! #MasteryChat#tlap#LeadLAP
A7 - l will continue supporting teachers on their path to mastery with @thegridmethod and do everything I can to continue helping others #teachbetter. #masterychat
#masterychat people...there are way too many incredible tweets and thinkers here to leave this in a few minutes. Please keep the PLN alive and follow each other!
Hey #MasteryChat people! Keep the conversation going with us over on Facebook! https://t.co/VyUyMRj2WZ . We'll be live just a little after 9 if you want to watch!
A7 Confirm strategic partners for my epic class return. So many dreams, goals. My students deserve so much. I will make the impossible happen. Some discussions already in the works...more awesomeness to happen. (Pirate hook) Stay tuned. #masterychat
Q7: Time to COMMIT!!! What is ONE THING you will do THIS next week to get you closer to your destination? I plan to straight up check on some of you! #MasteryChat#tlap#LeadLAP

A6
Road blocks will happen. They will happen often. I will not go against my personal beliefs when it comes to my teaching babies. I will voice my opinion if I am asked to do something I feel is not a best practice. My babies come first.
A7 I plan on taking time to enjoy and appreciate my kids especially because it is state testing and at times focus is lost during that. I plan to keep my focus on the Why not the test! #MasteryChat
A6 - (1 of 2) sorry late to chat. Our #alted schedule doesn’t lend itself to enough planning time. AND we are often asked to change focus every trimester to meet our Ss needs. There needs to be set planning time so we can coordinate #masterychat
A6: Breaking through fixed mindsets of Ts + Ss always seems to be the toughest hurdle to conquer. Focus on locus of control. My mantra: changers don’t complain + complainers don’t change. Always be a changer. #alwayslearning#masterychat
A7: I talk to much. My role as an admin is new. There's a lot to learn. But, I want to be a resource to teachers, not a hindrance. And I think step one is to work on shutting up and listening. Working to understand first, as well as I can, before I open my mouth. #masterychat
Q7: Time to COMMIT!!! What is ONE THING you will do THIS next week to get you closer to your destination? I plan to straight up check on some of you! #MasteryChat#tlap#LeadLAP
#TRUTH! I see the results of this constantly! The "Want" to do better but the inability to effectively EXECUTE or the unwillingness to sacrifice to make it happen! #masterychat#tlap
I haven't heard that one before, but that is kind of my philosophy for MS. We are trying to help them figure out who they are as learners and what they need to do to be successful. #masterychat
A7: My team and I are taking everything off of our walls this weekend. Ss will be shocked!! Why? We are putting the Ss in charge of transforming our rooms into Native American regions. Shhhh... they don’t know it yet. #MasteryChat

A7 I will remember to be mindful. I will do my rounds in the morning and check on the teachers in my building I will make sure the small things are taken care of before tackling bigger things. #MasteryChat
A7: Stop sleeping? KIDDING!
This week I will commit to focusing on my students while I have them, and do the best I can with the non student stuff (meetings, paperwork). #masterychat

A7- One thing I will do next week is to connect with and help at least 5 students...as a central office admin it is essential that I do not lose touch with the Ss #masterychat
Q6: Reading a book rec. by S called The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck. Weird, right? But book talks about people are worried and always thinking about how to get rid of their weaknesses. What if you turn things around and focus on your strengths instead? #MasteryChat
A6: Funding is a barrier to student opportunities - work to partner with local businesses by finding a need of theirs that you can meet that also increases student learning opportunities #MasteryChat
A7: Try something new-I’m developing a curation tool with @Symbaloo for my kids and parents! I hope it will be helpful and all-in-one-spot! #masterychat
A7: Next week I will plan on meeting with a few parents - even though we're at the tail end of the year I need to make sure my Ss are on track and that I have parent support. #MasteryChat
Hey #MasteryChat people! Keep the conversation going with us over on Facebook! https://t.co/VyUyMRj2WZ . We'll be live just a little after 9 if you want to watch!
A7 - Committing to doing 20% time with my students next week and every week till the end of the year. Coaching my students to innovate on a subject they care about is so important to me. #masterychat
A5: Listen well to those bleeps and warnings from those you trust. Call a friend if you need to. Pause to think - and then just pick up where you are and begin heading back the right way! #MasteryChat
A7 this week!! One more commit! ?? I have some writing to do ✏️!! If I share a plan “out loud”, it becomes a Goal... ahhh.. I WILL WRITE this week!! #masterychat
A1: If you don’t have a goal, you are never going to be able to teach the needed skills. If you don’t have a clearly defined goal, the your students have know idea what you want from them. #MasteryChat
A7 - I’m dressing up as Robert Plant and singing Ramble On! We play music every day and my kids keep hearing me talk about Led Zeppelin. My voice is horrible so it may cost me my job! Oh well, I’ll go down in “a blaze of glory.” Bon Jovi! #masterychat
You can do it Jeff! Let's connect, make it happen! #gridnation is with you! The @thegridmethod team is always here and ready to collaborate, communicate, and conquer any of your challenges you might have! LET's DO THIS! #masterychat

A7. Pushing Educatinal portfolios to help Ss own their year before June. Teaching with Google Sites this week has opened so many opportunities for Ss to show what they know and keep what they want to show off on the web-site For future grades... #wayofthefuture#masterychat
A6: Fear of the unknown and failure hold me back. I can bypass it by forgetting about my fears, just pushing forward. Soaking in all I can and keep going. #MasteryChat
A6: I am working in curriculum development this year, so am out of the classroom but I had 11 years of classroom experience. Unfortunately, my roadblocks last year where due to the high needs of the parents and parent dynamics - was so frustrating #MasteryChat
