The #INeLearn hashtag is used for both asynchronous sharing and synchronous conversations. Include #INeLearn in your tweets if you want to share resources or questions with Indiana educators and school leaders. Asynchronously, the #INeLearn hashtag provides educators across the state of Indiana a central space for sharing. On Thursday evenings beginning at 8 CST/9 EST when you use the #INeLearn hashtag, you are joining a live conversation--the #INeLearn Twitter Chat. For one hour, we interact in real time having a virtual discussion.
Welcome to the #INeLearn chat. The topic for tonight’s chat is “The Oversimplification of #DigCit.” I’m Michele, your moderator for this evening. Looking forward to a great conversation!

Let everyone know you’re here for the #INeLearn chat. Introduce yourself, and why not… let’s play 2 Truths and a Lie. Tweet out two truths and a lie about yourself, and let’s try to guess what the lie is while we wait for Q1.
My two truths and a lie:
1 - I am in the crowd in a scene of the movie My Best Friend’s Wedding.
2 - I’ve been knocked out sprinting into a light pole.
3 - I have a weird phobia of opening Easter eggs.
#INeLearn
Super excited about tonight's topic! I drive a 25 year old Volvo. I received a shoulder injury working the sideline at Notre Dame Stadium. I'm a childbirth instructor of 28 years. #2truths1lie#INeLearn
Nadine Gilkison, District Tech Integration Franklin Township 1. Had a full tennis court in my backyard surrounded by corn fields 2. Have 4 kids 3. Taught for 15 years #INeLearn
Q1: When thinking about digital citizenship instruction in your classroom, school, or district, what do you think you are doing really well? What aspects of #digcit have your students learned a lot about? #INeLearn

New to #INeLearn chats, but excited to participate! I'm Kaley, former middle school ELA teacher, and current @EVERFI schools manager working w/ teaceher. My 2 truths/1 lie:
1. Been held up with a weapon twice
2. Been dancing since I was 2 years-old
3. Been to all 50 states
R1: I try to put #DigCit in many different parts of my class, constantly coming back to it. My students get a lot of current, real world examples of digital citizenship #INeLearn

Q1: When thinking about digital citizenship instruction in your classroom, school, or district, what do you think you are doing really well? What aspects of #digcit have your students learned a lot about? #INeLearn
R1 I do teachable moments well. I even have been known to put telemarketers on speakerphone so I can demo to my Ss what to do when one calls their cell. 🤷♀️ #INeLearn
A2 I think we talk a LOT about bullying, safe websites, etc--but I think those topics are reactive, when we need to focus on being PROactive! #INeLearn
R2 I think the tendency is to talk safety or cyber bullying. I think that’s what most Ps worry about. They are very important, but not the only things we should be covering. #INeLearn
For my kids' schools, they cover the dangers well, so historically it's been a limited view. Not so sure about covering all the educational potential, but I sense progress every year toward a more open mindset. I'm encouraged about that. #iNeLearn A1
Q1: When thinking about digital citizenship instruction in your classroom, school, or district, what do you think you are doing really well? What aspects of #digcit have your students learned a lot about? #INeLearn
R2: I tend to focus on what damage can be done in the real world when things go badly in the digital world. I feel it makes the abstract more real for them, makes it practical #INeLearn
That’s an interesting point. A lot of what we cover about dig cit is the scary aspects, the reactionary approach. There’s a lot about being a good digital citizen that is positive and helpful. #INeLearn
Q2: Digital footprint - helping kids recognize they leave a trail online and nothing can ever be completely deleted - and making sure it really represents you and others well. #INeLearn
Amber Harper from Fort Wayne, jumping in late! R1. With my first it’s, we practiced dig cit by learning how to give helpful feedback to our peers in @Seesaw using comments. First we practiced by verbalizing what we would want to say and also practiced what not to say. #INeLearn
R2: Digital footprint - helping kids recognize they leave a trail online and nothing can ever be completely deleted - and making sure it really represents you and others well. #INeLearn
I'm a parent who's looking for more. It's like, if you're using tech for good, for learning, why don't we learn at least as much about that as what to watch out for? #iNeLearn
R2 I think the tendency is to talk safety or cyber bullying. I think that’s what most Ps worry about. They are very important, but not the only things we should be covering. #INeLearn
A1. I think we discuss all of the topics, but I think we could do more to integrate them into multiple areas and hit the topics from multiple angles. #inelearn
Ooops, wrong link for Devorah Heitner. Her book Screenwise is amazing, as is this TED talk she did--Model for, and mentor kids, don't just monitor them. https://t.co/PVAVp8qV2E#INeLearn
A2. I hear the most about safety and cyber bullying. Safety because people seem to have been taught to fear the Internet. Cyber bullying, because of the stories we see in the news. Both are important, but I think we need to spend some of that time on other topics. #inelearn
A3. How about providing practice of #digcit skills in context? What opportunities are we providing in class to practice online communication. (Like backchannels, blogging, etc) #INeLearn
R3. I want to spend more time on showing kids how to be digital leaders and interact, create digital footprints, etc with intention. I enjoyed the SociaLeadia book. #inelearn
A3 We don't reach out to the parents enough. That is my focus this year in our district. Been talking to them about what their kids want THEM to know about their digital world. (i.e. Don't make me text for you. Don't post things about me.) #INeLearn
🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼 We know application is important as part of the learning process. It applies here, too. (We also have to remember they’re learning. Create opportunities to learn and make mistakes in a safe environment, and then find those teachable moments.) #INeLearn
A3. How about providing practice of #digcit skills in context? What opportunities are we providing in class to practice online communication. (Like backchannels, blogging, etc) #INeLearn
R2 I talked lot about needing to practice #DigCit now, so someday when we have Facebook and Instagram, we know how to say nice things to each other. I also talked a lot about choosing to ignore ‘problem causers’ because even though we grow up, people are still mean. #INeLearn
A3: Teaching students to cite sources in their work is not addressed as much as it should be. I always think of my friend @krissyvenosdale and how her work has been plagiarized and resold. I want to develop real world applications to get students to think critically #INeLearn
@AmySayers65 Oh so true for us! We do have a SoWeLEAD Think-In planned for tomorrow with teams of Ts Ss Admins and parents involved in digcit next steps planning! But we need more parents involved! #INeLearn
R4: Each school has its own unique needs. Sometimes a focus on particular concepts is helpful, but by not using everything we might neglect a problem we don't know we have. #INeLearn
A4 I think schools have been leaving parents out of the equation. This is a huge Ah-ha for us this year. When we leave them out, we create two different worlds for our kids when it come to tech use. #INeLearn
The risks are greater. Focusing on online safety and cyberbullying and not the positive global connections of the digital world, focusing on sharing content without respecting copyright... our kids (and adults) need a complete picture of digital citizenship. #digcit#iNeLearn A4
A4 I think we navigate to teaching the areas we are comfortable with--sexting isn't easy to talk about--copyright, no problem...but we need to get real with our kids. #INeLearn
Here's the thing--if Ss don't know the why to a dig cit "rule" they will question it. Part of that questioning happens when we make rules about use (Parent and teachers) and then don't follow it ourselves! #INeLearn
"Fake news" (an unfortunately hijacked term) was covered in my daughter's first days of high school this year. Media literacy is critical (whether or not it's treated as a component of digital citizenship or something else). #INeLearn
Hi! My name is Bailey Kintz. I'm a junior at PFW and my major is secondary education. I'll be participating in the discussion tonight. Nice to meet you all.
#INelearn
A6--we teach kids the "lifelines" each week: Integrity, caring, forgiveness, etc.) We blend these lifeline lessons and use the language as we teach dig cit. #INeLearn
R6: I think digital citizenship is referred to as an extension of citizenship to create a relationship and build background knowledge. It's a bit different though because it has a whole lot less governance. #INeLearn
HI! My name is Ryan Chell, I am a junior at Purdue University Fort Wayne. I am studying to be a middle school math and social studies teacher. I am participating in this discussion for a class assignment. #INeLearn
My ears ring whenever someone suggests reaching out to parents! And it's fascinating what insights teachers glean that kids don't always reveal to their parents. #INeLearn
A3 We don't reach out to the parents enough. That is my focus this year in our district. Been talking to them about what their kids want THEM to know about their digital world. (i.e. Don't make me text for you. Don't post things about me.) #INeLearn
R4. I worry that people miss areas and topics when they only focus on the ones they think are most important. And a lot of times #digcit gets viewed as a checklist. But we need to move beyond that mentality and integrate it more fully. #inelearn
A6 "Do the right thing, treat people right" has been a mantra at our school for 18 years now, we just make sure they know it means face-to-face, and online. #INeLearn
R6: True because the intrinsic value of people is the same whether you're talking to them in person or online, and we can use both online and offline interactions to build communities. #INeLearn
A1: I'm not a teacher yet, but I think it's a good idea to teach students how to communicate appropriately on the internet. I think it'd be a great idea to create discussion boards so the students learn how to interact and respect each other online. #INelearn
It can be discouraging, because how much is the average adult willing to unlearn and relearn? Or adults who do have a clue throw up their hands when it comes to their older parents. The media literacy requited today may take a generation to sink in. #iNeLearn
A1: When I become a teacher, I will heavily stress the fact that to be a good digital citizen, you must treat others with respect, as you would in a face to face interaction. #INeLearn
I’m looking forward to your thoughts on the next question then. Definitely diving into that a bit. I actually wish we had some more time to talk about the differences more. #INeLearn
@KintzBailey Yes, you are right! We talk about the characteristics of good digcit and then we give plenty of practice opportunities to our Ss #INeLearn
Q7: To continue the conversation from Q6… What are your thoughts on teaching students it’s okay to have a different identity or be a different version of themselves online than offline? #INeLearn
Q7: To continue the conversation from Q6… What are your thoughts on teaching students it’s okay to have a different identity or be a different version of themselves online than offline? #INeLearn
R6. Some of the same social skills and expectations apply, but some are different. For example: it’s harder to read someone’s tone sometimes online, and what I say out loud isn’t going to be screenshot and sent elsewhere. #inelearn
And there are hidden norms! (i.e. Don't post a pic of yourself in your bathing suit. But wait--if you're in a family photo, like on vacation, then it's okay.) So much for kids to know and navigate!
A2: I think as educators we tend to talk about being appropriate online because we don't want students abusing online privileges and putting inappropriate things online.
#INelearn
R7: this feels controversial because of the word "Identity." It isn't that we want Ss to have completely diff identities, but we have to see that social media use itself prompts us to show certain parts of ourselves when we choose, and that isn't necessarily bad #INeLearn
A7 I think we all have multiple identities on line--professional, personal, casual friendship, deep friendships...I think the key is to teach kids that they are in control of it! #INeLearn
R7. I think it depends. I’m don’t think it’d be healthy for them fully take on another persona. But online I think it’s natural for some people to leave out parts of their personal lives and to exaggerate parts of their personality, and I think that’s fine. #inelearn
R7: Comm. Theory talks about Front Stage and Back Stage - Behaviors, norms, expectations shaped by the role we play and where to are communicating #INeLearn
This sounds ominous, but tech can also open the world to quiet kids. It may also be an outlet to explore different interests (say they have a gaming persona separate from their "general" persona). Just emphasize: Don't meet up with strangers, and don't play an adult. #INeLearn A7
Q7: To continue the conversation from Q6… What are your thoughts on teaching students it’s okay to have a different identity or be a different version of themselves online than offline? #INeLearn
A3: I think areas we cover less often include how to properly work softwares included in #digcit We teach kids how to be appropriate online, but I don't think they know how to properly work essential softwares used for business and education. #INelearn
A7: I believe that it’s not ok to teach them to have a different identity online than IRL.. When you see comment posts on Social Media of how harsh people can be online, kids need to be taught that is a reflection of themselves online and real life and has consequences #INeLearn
Q7: To continue the conversation from Q6… What are your thoughts on teaching students it’s okay to have a different identity or be a different version of themselves online than offline? #INeLearn
R7: Seems dangerous to me, esp for young kids who are still forming their identity-maybe it's ok to have different aspects of your identity-interests, religion, family situation, etc.-but all of those play together to form who you are. An that's true online or offline. #INeLearn
A2: I think one of the things we need to talk about the most when discussing this with our students is that whenever you put something on the internet, it is out there forever. So beware of what you might say. #INeLearn
The gaming persona is exactly what I was thinking about. I think it’s an opportunity to explore identity. How many adults are still figuring out or redefining identity? It can be a great tool for exploration of self. #INeLearn
A6: I think this true because the internet is so heavily intergrated into our society, and it's almost like if you want to be a citizen, you must also be a #digcit#INelearn
HI! My name is Ryan Chell, I am a junior at Purdue University Fort Wayne. I am studying to be a middle school math and social studies teacher. I am participating in this discussion for a class assignment. #INeLearn

A7: I think it's okay to an extent. For example, if a student tends to be shy in the classroom, encouraging them to come out of their shell online; however, I think students should always be themselves online. It's not okay for kids to pretend to be other people online. #INelearn
And we ALL had different identities as kids, didn't we? Our family self vs. our school self, a friend self vs. a self we displayed with adults... tech is a medium; it doesn't entirely alter the human dynamic. #DigCit#INeLearn
This, yes. It's another opportunity for kids to explore various aspects of their identity, but all part of their identity, rather than a separate identity.
WU This year I am seeing the benefit of bringing students and parent together to create some empathy and understanding. Huge "Ah-Ha" and the conversations have been amazing. The change--get parents and kids together to talk! #INeLearn
Right. And we can't silence any of these selves in students. If tech allows them to explore, I think we support that, give them the tools to do so safely, and stop focusing on only what might go wrong. #INeLearn

@micheeaton we need to quit pointing fingers to others about responsibility of digcit instruction and accept that it must be a village. Every teacher has the responsibility, ever day #INeLearn
A6: I think you could view it as an extension of citizenship because it is still a group of people coming together on the internet. However, not everyone uses it the same way and not everyone accesses the same thing and not everyone can access it in general. #INeLearn
