#suptchat A1 -we are beginning to examine existing data from multiple sources (ex. local and state assessments, suspensions, AP participation, etc. to determine racial discrepancies). Curriculum audit also underway and plan to address to follow.
#suptchat A1-we still have a long road ahead of us. @DrAaronJGriffen has conducted two of five sessions with staff thus far on Implicit Bias. Our next step is to examine existing policy with the BoE with our eyes wide open.
A1 #suptchat my district addresses equity issues in many ways: Title I funds and leadership, interventions, consistent, guaranteed & viable curriculum, support for teachers & students at all levels, differentiated funding to schools based upon student needs
A1: The first step to addressing equity issues is to acknowledge that they exist. The second is to have open and honest dialogue about how to address them. That open dialogue occurs every day with my leadership team so we can approach equity with eyes wide open! #suptchat
A1. Gary Bates superintendent Fort Sam Houston ISD, San Antonio, Texas. My best gift was watching my family be together and being thankful and truly blessed.#suptchat
#suptchat
We discuss what equity means for all children. We bring samples of students from different groups to discuss how they feel about the school and our leadership. We get suggestions from them. We use the feedback to become better.
A1: We have been highly focused on learning as much as we can about our students and families, drilling down with several data sources and engaging in discussions with our staff, working to find a common understanding and developing supports & resources. #SuptChat
A1: One of the ways we strive for equity is by employing translators in the district. We should be able to speak with ALL parents and guardians about their students' educations. #suptchat
A1: Our team reviews attendance, discipline, and academic data bi-weekly looking for gaps/trends. Once a problem is identified, we create action steps towards a solution. #suptchat
A1: One way we address equity includes auditing our honors pathways for inclusion of students from sub-groups such as EL and IEP. We also audit our programs for equity of access for male and female students. #suptchat
#suptchat A1: Our leadership team addresses equity by prioritizing a Supportive Learning Environment as one of our 5 Core Values. We describe this as the need to meet the needs of ALL students in any way possible!
A1. We realize that in public education we can not always control how our students arrive at our doorstep, but we can control how we treat and support them. Equitable access to supports and resources from district. Encourage our community to lend a hand too. #suptchat

A1: We are working to ensure every building offers innovative spaces and programs to all students. Addressing equity is found in the four pillars of our strategic plan. #suptchat#ThisIsWe
Q1: In what ways does your leadership team address equity issues at your school district? #SuptChat
Use #suptchat & the format Q1, Q2, Q3...A1, A2, A3... in your responses
Q1: This may seem like a small change but in practice it wasn’t: we stopped saying “all” students and replaced with “each” student. This helped us focus on uniqueness rather than the aggregate. #suptchat
Hi #suptchat Happy New Year! I'm Crissy Mombela, Director of Student Services for CCSD 21 in Wheeling, IL. Favorite gift was a locket necklace from my bonus daughter with my late father's picture in it.
A1. We as a district try to look at our data and needs and wants from our military students and community to provide pathways for ALL of our military students.#suptchat
#suptchat
A2: My district has conducted race relation classes in the past. Leaders in the district are involved in equity training in the NISL. We discuss and provide initiatives to address equity among our males of color, special needs children, and English Learners
A1 - We are regularly asking ourselves how our actions are impacting students from all backgrounds and then digging deeper into the data we have available. Supporting our Ts and Ss in their quest to understand and learn how to better serve Ss from diverse backgrounds. #suptchat
#suptchat A2: We will be moving to online registration next year in order to facilitate more families applying for meal and fee assistance. We have also partnered with a local food-providing charity to provide our neediest families with meals
A2: We are getting stronger processes in place to identify each of our unique building needs. Empowering each of our schools' leadership teams, we are able to address the specific needs as it relates to equity. We then, are better equipped to support our students. #suptchat
A2. Our district understands that one of the most crucial components in removing equity gaps is by eliminating opportunity gaps. Therefore, we as a district do and will continue to focus on increasing opportunities for all students. #SuptChat
A2: Providing safe opportunities is critical. Further, we have been intentional in conducting curriculum audits of each of our courses to determine any areas of growth for us to identify and modify. #suptchat
#suptchat A1: Equity has a lot to do with access. We allow as many students as we can to take upper level coursework. Equity also has to do with putting resources where they are most needed. We have changed everything we do with SPED with this in mind.
A1. Equity is embedded in our district mission, which is: Success for every child- #WhateverItTakes
Our team is committed to STEM ed opportunities For All PK-12! #SuptChat
A1. My district addresses equity by hiring personnel to address the needs of our growing population of EL students. Additionally, at the school level, our leadership team works hard to schedule learning strategies into students' schedules based on their academic needs. #SuptChat
Just wanted to lurk and read the thoughts of great leaders. I’m caitlin, teacher in @ManorISD, and my favorite holiday gift was spending time with my girls. #suptchat
A1: Open and brutally honest conversations about data and kids, ALL kids. We are explicit about striving to decrease/eliminate the predictability of a student’s success based on any indicator. #suptchat
A1: We address equity in a variety of ways, but one way was meeting with a group of minority male students and asking THEM why THEY though they were being out-performed by other sub groups. #suptchat
A2: This winter/spring we are piloting a Parent/Teacher Home visit program where we have been trained by parents on how to conduct home visits to address equity issues. I'm excited to see where this takes us! #suptchat
A2 Our district is working to remove equity gaps faced by students and families through Title I outreach, new family coordinator position, Saturday school volunteer options, social service implementation, doing a lot yet more is needed #suptchat
A2. One of the gaps we are working to close is access to college. We are implementing the AVID program as a part of the process of addressing this need. #SuptChat
A2: #suptchat - Our audits of participation help us identify how to be more inclusive for our students and families. We have work to do and I like what I'm seeing in other responses!
Amy MacCrindle- serving as a Director of Curriculum in Huntley D158! I’m on a flight getting ready to take off so I’ll join in as long as I can. Happy New Year all! #suptchat
A2: Our district has identified a gap in our special education student data. We provided targeted PD for teachers on supporting our special education students in reg ed classrooms. #suptchat
A2: One way we are attacking equity gaps is by providing internet through wireless hot spots to students without connectivity at home. Thanks @sprint !! #suptchat
A2 we are focusing our attention on our tier 1 supports - which addresses supporting all students, it is also at least 1 question in our interview process #suptchat
A1: I would love to learn more about this in my district we have a director of SEL but I’d love to see a position focused on inclusion/diversity/equity in our district. #suptchat
A2. We have 3 major pushes for equity; 1:1 Chromebooks at our MS, 1:1 laptops at our HS, and accessible mental heath supports in all our schools and community in partnership with a private provider. SES and zip code should not be a barrier to any of these. #suptchat
A2. Our district implemented a 1:1 MacBook initiative with students this year to ensure students had access to devices. We also started 1:1 iPads for our 6th - 8th grade students. I think this is a step in the right direction to level the playing field for all students. #SuptChat
A2: We are on a multi-year campaign to close the digital gap present in our district. Would welcome the opportunity to connect with leaders working to close this gap for families w/o Internet. #suptchat#ThisIsWe
Q1: In what ways does your leadership team address equity issues at your school district? #SuptChat
Use #suptchat & the format Q1, Q2, Q3...A1, A2, A3... in your responses
A2: Personally I’m spending more time talking to students and families, learning from them what barriers they face, and then working with them to overcome those barriers. #suptchat
Determined that resources would be fairly distributed based upon need and not equal. Can equate to fairness in time & resources provided students with an IEP #suptchat
A1: One way our district ensures equity is to provide translators, open forums and info sessions in multiple languages for our diverse parents so that they can be active, engaged partners in serving our students! #SuptChat
Q1: In what ways does your leadership team address equity issues at your school district? #SuptChat
Use #suptchat & the format Q1, Q2, Q3...A1, A2, A3... in your responses
A2: We are trying to identify the barriers that keep various groups from having the access others enjoy. Zip code should not define your quality of education! #suptchat
#suptchat A2: We will be moving to online registration next year in order to facilitate more families applying for meal and fee assistance. We have also partnered with a local food-providing charity to provide our neediest families with meals
#suptchat A2- We are running an After School Assistance Program for students who are struggling Academically and/or Behaviorally for one hour and providing internet and tech access. Some of our families are limited with internet access.
A2: Through the elimination of grades for homework - as D13 shifts toward standards based grading and reporting, we strive to increase opportunities for students to reach mastery through their strengths they bring to the table. #suptchat
#suptchat A2: We work to remove equity gaps by looking at data available to identify where gaps exist. We also focus on the growth of every single student, stretch growth over annual growth. We attempt to ensure every student has every opportunity within the school community.
#suptchat A2: Over several years, we have had a big gap between poverty and non-poverty students. My leadership team jumped I to research to address some of these issues. Teaching With Poverty in Mind by Jensen is a great read. This was our start, and it has paid off.
A1. Educating adult learners on culturallly relevant pedagogy has been a work in progress for us. Understanding what equity looks like in real time is crucial. #suptchat
Equality states the value of growth without changing the means necessary to achieve it, while equity demonstrate the value of growth by aligning resources where they are most needed. #suptchat
A3: In my opinion equity has much to do with providing for the needs of all students. Ensuring that all students have access to an education that all students deserve. Many deep and critical conversations are still needed #suptchat
A3: Equality=Sameness, it only works if everyone starts from the same place. Equity=Fairness, access to the same opportunities. We must first ensure equity before we can have equality. #suptchat
#suptchat A3: Equity means providing what is needed to who is needing it, as opposed to giving everyone the same. @rickwormeli2 has classic examples in "Fair Isn't Always Equal" that we often revisit
A2: identifying and addressing explicit and implicit barriers in our system. Pre-Recs, de-tracking courses, partnering with @EqualOppSchools re: AP, increasing extracurricular offerings, etc. #suptchat
A1: Most recently, our team watched the documentary on Netflix: Teach Us All. Powerful film and great stimulus for important conversations! @teachusallfilm#suptchat
A2 - Our @Alliance4lb65 has been helpful in providing some additional $$ for making sure our libraries are reflective of all Ss in our district. That's a big help. Also, I think a piece of attacking the equity gap is understanding that there is one in the 1st place. #suptchat
A2: Through the elimination of grades for homework - as D13 shifts toward standards based grading and reporting, we strive to increase opportunities for students to reach mastery through their strengths they bring to the table. #suptchat
A2: One area sometimes leaders need more courage to tackle is equity in student discipline. Garland ISD in Texas worked with assistant principals on this very issue. Presented at @LearningForward in December. @babshemphill#suptchat
#suptchat
A3: With equity we must meet provide students with what they need even if it means everyone will not get the same things. Equality deals with everyone getting the same resources opportunities. That is not the best for those students who need more to become successful.
I think it's important to remind ourselves, "What's best for the best is best for the rest." We must not exclude certain kids/must not limit access for all to what our "best" kids have access to #suptchat
A3 equity is getting resources and access and opportunities to those who need it how and when they need it - equality is offering the same to all - equity is hard and needed; equality is easier but misleading #suptchat
A3: Equality, I think, means students have access to the same resources & supports while equity, to me, means that all students have opportunities to be successful, even if that means taking different approaches, providing different resources, etc. #SuptChat
#suptchat A3: According to Education Trust's @Blair_Mann--Equality has become synonymous with “leveling the playing field.” So let’s make equity synonymous with “more for those who need it.”
A3: Equity in education provides personalized and authentic opportunity, support and resources for all learners, versus one size fits all or based on your zip code.
What if we address the source of inequity and get rid of the barrier all together?! #SuptChat
A3. Equality is everyone gets the same, need it or not. Equity is they get what they need when they need it for as long as they need it - instruction is remediated, on level, or enriched/accelerated with the necessary supports and no judgment on Ss or their background. #suptchat
A2: We are trying to identify the barriers that keep various groups from having the access others enjoy. Zip code should not define your quality of education! #suptchat
Retired supt as of June 2018 - 1st day after New Years when I didn’t go into schools .. now exe dir of the Va School Consortium 4 Learning - equity & efficacy go hand in hand -assessing conditions to support collective efficacy is a beginning point for equity actions #suptchat
A3. Equity is providing what a student needs in order to maximize their individualized learning opportunities, while equality is providing all students with the same tools regardless of their differences in terms of need. #suptchat
Good Evening everyone! I am currently the principal of Ruleville Middle School in Ruleville, Mississippi. Favorite gift came from my staff and it wa a basket full of thing I love #suptchat
A3: #suptchat Complicated answer. Equality and equity are intertwined, with equality being a larger systemic issue and equity being a local issue (my opinion). Equality can't be addressed without funding reform; Equity is addressed by district/building/classroom leadership.
A1: We make sure to have the conversation during the planning and preimplantation stages as to whether or not we are making plans to meet ALL students needs. It’s an intentional part of our process. #suptchat
A3: Equity in education provides personalized and authentic opportunity, support and resources for all learners, versus one size fits all or based on your zip code.
What if we address the source of inequity and get rid of the barrier all together?! #SuptChat
A3: One if our Superintendent’s favorite quotes is something like this: “There is nothing more unjust than the the equal treatment of unequal people.” That might not be exactly it, but it’s close. Treating everyone the same is not the same as meeting their needs. #suptchat
A2: We are completing a multi-year plan to provide one to world digital opportunities in our district. Our leadership teams at the MS and HS has created Schools of Innovation to meet students where they are. #suptchat#WhateverItTakes
A1: Equity is embedded in our district's mission statement: Prepare all students for success. We also address equity by discussing performance gaps at a district and building level as well as within our role based teams.
#suptchat
#suptchat A3: Saw a comment on here already about replacing all with each, love the mindset! It is essential! Each student receives what they need, whether it is math remediation, reading acceleration, clothes, or food for the weekend!
#suptchat A3: Again, I believe equity has to do with access and resources. It is our job to put the resources in place to grow all students and never limit their possibilities.
A2) Seek and ye shall find millions of dollars in educational grants addressing equity all over the US. I recently did a program with the @TMobile EnpowerED program where we were able to get free WiFi hotspots, WiFi, tablets and chromebooks for ED students for pennies! #suptchat
A3. Equality is giving everyone the same thing (regardless of their needs). Equity is giving people what they need in order to have the same access/success that others may have. @mikelubelfeld Your picture sums it up perfectly. #SuptChat
A2: One of the greatest efforts we can make to address #equity gaps is to focus on developing and amplifying effective teachers. Our focus on #literacy is helping educators improve their instruction and impact thus building more confident readers. #suptchat
A2. Equity’s providing all of our students to be able to receive a quality education on the same playing field regardless of what zip code you are from. Equality is providing the same education with same resources or dollar regardless if you need more or less.#suptchat
A3: Equity in education provides personalized and authentic opportunity, support and resources for all learners, versus one size fits all or based on your zip code.
What if we address the source of inequity and get rid of the barrier all together?! #SuptChat
A3...I think the difference between equity & equality is reasonably clear by definition, but the culture of our districts is what defines whether our people understand, embrace, value, & work towards equity for all. #SuptChat
#suptchat A4: This is problematic in small, rural districts-- however, by providing one of the most supportive teaching environments in the area is already paying off. #Teachershortage is not as prevalent in a district that promotes growth and risk-taking #growthmindset
#suptchat A4: Recruit and retain require two different approaches. Recruit at HBCUs/HLCUs. Create supportive environments with more than modest pay to retain. Create leadership pipelines, so Ts of Color do not feel they cannot advance outside of the classroom if they choose.
A3 Every school has different students & each presents a new set of circumstances unique to that community. Funding formulas must be EQUITABLE so that they reflect the fact that some Ss are more difficult to educate. If we assume all schools are =, it misses the point. #suptchat
A3) being equitable is both meeting stakeholders where they are and providing the tools AND training to level the field. Money or stuff will bit fix a problem. There are several cigs in the equity wheel. #suptchat
A4 #suptchat Tough Question - we do a great job with ethnic Hispanic & Spanish language teachers in support of our Dual Language program (20+ years of two-way immersion English/Spanish) Recruit by visiting fairs, going out of town; retain - same as for all - CULTURE & support
A4: We are lagging in this respect but I believe grow your own programs could plant seeds to recruit teachers who share similar experiences and backgrounds of students they teach. #suptchat
A4: To retain diverse teachers/leaders, equity in support/development must be inclusive, intentional & personalized, again diversity ≠ a one-size-fits-all model/culture
Districts need to design, promote and practice inclusive talent- engagement/advancement strategies. #SuptChat
A4. This is an area we need to improve, the demographics of our student body is changing and our staff works hard to meet their needs, but is not very diverse. Open to suggestions and keeping expectations high. #suptchat
A4. Our district works to recruit a diverse staff through an annual employment fair along with recruiting partnerships with local universities. #suptchat
#suptchat A3-Equality has to do with fairness. Equity is about filling the gaps for all students to have the same opportunities and all gaps are different...this is the challenge.
A4: We have placed intentional focus on attracting new staff that represent our student population. We work directly with student teachers, attend university placement fairs, and participate in any opportunity possible that may attract the best staff for our district. #suptchat
A4. #SuptChat Recruitment and Retention of staff is becoming increasingly difficult with the current teacher shortage. We keep our teachers happy by supporting them with discipline issues, parents, and giving them the opportunity to teach electives of their choice.
A4: We do not do a good job of recruiting and retaining a diverse staff. We live in a rural area and have a hard time with recruiting any staff. #suptchat
A4 - Honestly, I am not sure we have identified a good method for doing this yet. Part of it is that there are not enough educators from diverse backgrounds in the pipeline. We're working on addressing the parts we can. #suptchat
A1: We make sure to have the conversation during the planning and pre-implementation stages as to whether or not we are making plans to meet ALL students needs. It’s an intentional part of our process. #suptchat
#suptchat
A4: Keeping diverse staff is difficult in rural areas. We listen to them and have real dialogue. District recruiting initiatives are directed at keeping teachers
A3:equality is expecting all to be ready for & need the same thing (curriculum, support, resources, opportunities, etc.) at the same time; equity is identifying who needs what, when & ensuring they receive it at the right time & in a way they can respond to/benefit from #suptchat
A2: Personally I’m spending more time talking to students and families, learning from them what barriers they face, and then working with them to overcome those barriers. #suptchat
A4 we take this challenge head on and actively seek out staff that represent our students - questions regarding equity and diversity are part of our interview process as well as teaching a lesson to our students #suptchat
A3 when everyone gets invited to the dinner table that’s equality / when everyone gets what they want to eat and also the nutrients they need that’s equity #suptchat
#suptchat A4: All admins attend recruiting fairs from all of the colleges in the state. We are holding our own fair this year that is open to all. We are always looking to diversify the staff, and we actively search all over the state.
A4 We have to be careful about hiring for "fit." We want to fit in w/ who we hire every bit as much as we want them to fit in w/ us. We need to hire what we do not have more than what we already have #suptchat
#suptchat A4: Recruiting and retaining a diverse staff means constantly using resources to network and collaborate to find the perfect fit for your school community. We don't have the luxury of waiting for those perfect fits to find us!
It's an honor to see the conversations happening tonight on #suptchat. We are the ones who can address equity. We are the ones who can make a difference in the lives of kids and families!
A3. My principals do a phenomenal job on hiring the best applicants to serve our military students. We strive hard to build a culture of team/ family that our teachers feel that they have found a home.#suptchat
A4: This is hard, for I would rather seek the best talent for the benefit of all students, but I realize the need for diversity - we continue to strive toward both ends. #suptchat
A3. Equality refers to treating people the same. For me Equity, refers to giving people the treatment they need.
Equity is an effort to provide solutions that suit different students’ needs. #suptchat
A4: I suppose right now, we look to get the best person we can in the right seat on the bus. Then give them what they need, support however we can and stay out of their way! #suptchat
A4 #suptchat - I think that we have to be more intentional about providing the diversity of hiring, inducting, and retaining the best staff we can find for our districts. Diversity is a challenge in small/rural districts, but it greatly needed.
A4: Promote our district's urban profile and invite urban minded educators to an Urban Educator Night. Redefine hiring practices.
Working to retain staff through personalized PD, cohorts, transparency in vision and always celebrate the hard work of our staff. #suptchat#ThisIsWe
A4: We reach out to local universities, post open positions on social media, attend job fairs. It's challenging. Investing in educators through professional development, mentoring, leadership opportunities is essential to retention. #suptchat
#suptchat
A4: Keeping diverse staff is difficult in rural areas. We listen to them and have real dialogue. District recruiting initiatives are directed at keeping teachers
Same opportunity is not equity. Ensuring all students have the same thing is not equity. Equity is providing what each student needs to be successful... it’s about differentiation not the same for all! #suptchat
A5: In today's world, I find myself reading and re-reading "Who Moved My Cheese?" #suptchat
Of course, being a Lions' fan has me used to perpetual re-building and "Wait until next year!"
A5. This year, members of our leadership team will be reading "Justice on both sides: Transforming education through restorative justice" by Maisha T. Winn. I have not read the book yet, but heard great things from colleagues. #SuptChat
#suptchat A5: My absolute favorites are "Nickel & Dimed" which can shatter preconceived ideas on working class favorites... another favorite is a book introduced to me by @npolyak "The Servant" which, if your actions line up, will go a long way towards disrupting inequity.
A5: Leading for Equity: The Pursuit of Excellence in the Montgomery County Public Schools by David A. Thomas, Denis P Doyle, and Stacey Childress #suptchat
A5: Equity, I believe is not only about the distribution of resources but also having high expectations for each and every student. A great practical book that I would suggest would be: High Expectations Teaching by Jon Saphier #suptchat
A2: This year we expanded our 1:1 program and have our 3rd -5th gr Ss having 1:1 Chromebook access. We also have funds available for families in need and waive costs for extracurriculars for Ss in need. #suptchat
#suptchat A5: Here are three good ones: Despite Best Intentions-How Racial Inequality Thrives In Good Schools by Lewis & Diamond, Culturally Responsive Teaching & The Brain by@Ready4rigor-Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting In the Cafeteria? by @BDTSpelman
A5: Two books I read during coursework that gave me a completely different perspective were Faces at the Bottom of the Well by Derrick Bell and Unequal Childhoods by Annette Lareau #suptchat
A4: We are in year one of our Dual Language program and @rpdelcastillo does an excellent job hiring candidates early and recruiting them to our team! Now, we are focusing on retention and support to make sure there isn’t too much turnover. #suptchat
A4. In addition to ensuring Ss are engaged by competent and compassionate Ts, Ss, esp disenfranchised Ss, also benefit from being exposed to professionals who look like them in educational settings. #suptchat
A5. Bring outside resources into the schools. One successful way we do this is our Career Caravan at our middle school. All kinds of professions talk to our students about real life experiences. Also, use of annual culture/climate surveys & model people 1st language. #suptchat
#SuptChat A4 We encourage teachers to “Reach One, Bring One”. They are paid a small stipend for recruiting and mentoring new educators in our district. Also, we also grow our own. Recruit former graduates to return or choose education as a second career.
A5: Most recently, I have found a lot of positive approaches in the works of @rubyKpayne & @EricJensenBrain, particularly the idea of understanding the "hidden rules of poverty" when designing curriculum, lessons, activities and more. #suptchat@ErinDeLuga
A6: One of the best equity resources I've come across is Equal Opportunity Schools @EqualOppSchools - they have helped us drive down our equity gaps in the district.#suptchat
A4: I know my district has a mentoring program. I’m not sure what methods they have (if any) for ensuring diversity that represents our students. #SuptChat
@DrAmyCarter#suptchat
A6: Equity involves skill base report cards where students are assessed based on a student centered learning approach.
Great! Concept
A5. Patterns and Profiles of Promising Learners from Poverty by Joyce Van Tassel Baska. This book specifically relates to the needs of gifted learners. Social emotional issues are highlighted. #suptchat
Q4: Gr8 question! I think you have to create an equitable environment for students and staff. It’s about cultivating the conditions that attract and retain families, students, teachers, and admin. Just widening the search net will not work without addressing your house. #suptchat
A5: Truly listen to understabd all stakeholders’ needs, and then be intentional in responding to the needs that surface. That allows voices to be heard. #suptchat
A3. Equity is about beliefs, behaviors and the systems created to sustain those. Equity work is focused removing the unseen advantages and hurdles that keep student of color underperforming compared to their peers. #SuptChat
A5 #suptchat - Next on my list is Through My Eyes by Ruby Bridges. I was so inspired by her testimony and challenge at the School Board Convention in Illinois this year.
A5: So many! I recommend all of @EricJensenBrain books as well as resources that focus on effective pedagogy and data informed decision making. Fundamentally, #equity is about ensuring that every child in every classroom in every school has a highly effective teacher. #suptchat
Thanks for the time, thoughts and learning tonight, it’s family and friends soup time for this #suptchat participant! Have a blessed 2019! #WhateverItTakes (questions via Portrait of a graduate)
A5: Cost of Poverty Experience (COPE) is on my list. Offers educators a simulated experience of a family over a 4 week period. Build awareness! @BCESCsupt#suptchat#ThisIsWe
A6: We are carefully crafting an assessment process/culture that will help us to determine exactly what all students know and can do. We are also beginning our research into our feedback and reporting systems as well. SO complex but SO worth it! #suptchat
A6 #SuptChat As H.R. Milner reminded us, assessments are equitable when they are as diverse as the students who take them, are not punitive or intimidating & are viewed as a snapshot of learning.
A5: #suptchat Read up on it...so much is out there on it. You can start wit Courageous Convos by Glenn Singleton, Pedagogy of the Oppressed by Paulo Freire, or seminal articles by Ladson-Billings & Tate, Geneva Gay...If you need/want more just let me know.
My former district partners with a scholarship/mentoring foundation 4 AA ed majors & they commit to working in district + focus on district-wide culturally responsive teaching affirms diversity is valued / https://t.co/umIP1JXb5W follow @DrTamaraWDias and @LeilaniKeys1#suptchat

A3: Is anyone talking about removing the wall? Identify and address root causes of inequality and lack of equity. Find others who are already doing this and learn from their efforts. #Suptchat
#suptchat A6: Assessments should NOT grade factors beyond students' control or unrelated to mastery. Eliminating the "KILLER zero" is a must in providing equity. Also, "re-do's" and corrections. We should be encouraging risk-taking and growth, not getting it right 1st time
A6 #suptchat equity means allowing for various forms of assessment ongoing - i.e. verbal, written, expressive, get at Does the student know what you are trying to teach? Equity means relying on more than bubble tests for learning and growth metrics
A6: As a whole we need to prioritize and return to a time where we view students, teachers, and parents as the primary end users of assessments (not bureaucrats). #suptchat
A6: @pbriggs728 puts it well saying that an 'achievement gap' is the result of an 'opportunity gap.' Considering assessments, then, it's crucial to recognize that not all Ss have the same opportunities-home life, resources, support-and that this will impact assessments. #SuptChat
#suptchat Oh, and by the way, I am Chris Chism - Principal at Pearl High School in Pearl, MS. My fav gift this year was just a 4 day getaway for my wife and I in New Orleans. We seldom find that time, so we made it this year. 😁
A5: engaging in shared decision making through diverse community groups. This is a growth area but still one we continue to work towards. Being open to real convo and other perspectives #Suptchat
A5 - Ignore who wrote it, but A Kind and Just Parent helped to shape my views on the juvenile (in)justice system and Spectacular Things Happen Along the Way helped me to see Urban Education in a new light. #suptchat
A6: This is the heart of the shift to standards based grading and reporting - to allow students to demonstrate their mastery in a manner that they choose. #suptchat
A6: #suptchat - Ensure your assessments are balanced, culturally relevant, and allow for all students to be successful. One way to ensure this is to get feedback from your students and staff regarding the assessments.
A6. Equitable assessments should allow multiple ways for students to demonstrate skills and consider their life experiences. This requires purposeful PD for staff. #suptchat
A6: I believe we need to re-think assessments all together. A student showing mastery and capacity in ANY way is more important all students showing knowledge in the exact same way. #suptchat
#suptchat A6: Equity when considering and delivering assessments should mean that students have flexibility to show mastery in ways that works for them. So much work to do in this area, in my opinion.
A6: The most equitable assessments will measure what matters... Growth! In IL we’re getting closer to measuring what matters, but there is more work to be done. #suptchat
A6: it means recognizing that not all students will have the background knowledge to comprehend a passage about cricket playing at a country club. Watch out how you design your tests. Are they designed to ensure some fail? #SuptChat
Q6. We look at Advanced Placement enrollment to see if the student population in those courses matches the district population for students of color. We also pay for AP exams. #SuptChat
A6. Assessments are relatively the same for all learners, even though each learner is inherently different. Project based learning is a way to assess with equity! #suptchat
A6: Assessments should be used to gauge student learning over time & for Ts to adjust their practices to respond to & meet the needs of students. #suptchat
Always great following along on the discussion! SO many great takeaways. Beyond Thankful! ✌️
🙌

#suptchat A6: This is a really good question. This is a hot topic here in MS. Not every school has the resources they need. Thus, many students don’t get the practice they need. This also means the giving of assessments themselves can take an inordinate amount of time.
A6 - my perspective means that we have to rethink assessment completely. Our old ways of assessing students (i.e. standardized measures without any universal design) is antiquated and discriminatory. We need to look at how students can demonstrate mastery in new ways. #suptchat
A6: This question makes me think about how my 8th grade SS teacher let us rewrite essays when retakes seemed foreign at the time. Letting students demonstrate growth and understanding should be the goal of assessment. #SuptChat
A5) you NEED to read @JDVance1 “Hillbilly Elegy. It’s beyond powerful for rural and low socioeconomic districts. The entire section on “learned helplessness” is both heartbreaking and very informative. It shifted my thinking. #suptchathttps://t.co/RqqZL6dY9K
A6 #suptchat - There has to be student voice and choice in the assessment process. Vocabulary can be a tremendous barrier that we need to consider in the assessment process for students.
#suptchat A6: Board Member @LeeannRevis and teacher leader @emilybiegel organized a Parade to the Polls in November. Getting students registered to vote and then parading to the polls was and is still critically important for our youth and society. Give students a voice!
#suptchat A7: Very active community charities providing both meals and a great group "Everyone Must Play" which buys needed basketball shoes, pays softball fees, etc. for economically disadvantaged families. Much more can be done on this front....curious to learn from others!!
A6 assessments reflect political and social values writ large and small - much work is needed to determine what equity vs equal means in assessment applications #suptchat
I agree. And will add, too many people view SBG only as a method or a process. It is those, but much more than that it is a philosophy rooted in equity. #suptchat
A6: Assessments need to determine what students know and have learned. They ways students demonstrate learning can be as unique they are, but the focus needs to be on removing barriers that may prevent them from sharing their knowledge. #suptchat
I think people over connect equity work with poverty work and the two are not always linked. Often when we isolate for race we can see amazing trends in our data that transcend parents economic status. @CC_AboutRace#SuptChat
A7: #suptchat - Many of us are members of IALAS, supporting the learning, teaching, and leading of Latino/a students. https://t.co/bynmKym4hM Join the fun!
A7 #suptchat equity & social justice goes far beyond the school walls-social service & government agencies play an essential role for all children/families-we rely on community wide service learning & events & food/clothing drives and access education - advocate for local groups
A5: This book has helped me understand more about childhood trauma and how it impacts student behaviors. Equity in serving our students with challenging behavior needs! Great read! #SuptChat
A6: What reading passages we include on assessments, ethnocentric metaphors or references... all can affect students' assessment scores. This assessment protocol can be amazing for teams to use: https://t.co/IIt9Uy7DmX@SchoolReformInc#suptchat
A6: equity in assessment must include a focus on every individual’s growth, multiple opportunities to meet mastery and a consideration of what matters (no penalty for type of materials, HW, internet, etc). Eliminate “zero” and teach/re-teach - assess/re-assess #suptchat
A7: I love that our students take part in local and global service learning projects. Moving equity and social justice out of our hallways and into the world is so important! #suptchat
A7. Our district, another local district, and the community have formed a partnership collaborative to ensure that there is equitable access to early childhood programs #suptchat
A6: Assessments should be used to gauge student learning over time & for Ts to adjust their practices to respond to & meet the needs of students. #suptchat
#suptchat A7: Our community is engaged in equity/social justice by leading the way in our district piloting Restorative Practices. Teaching and modeling building positive, connected relationships within and between adult and student relationships.
A7. The @NorthernLehigh community is growing more diverse, but committed to supporting Ss. This is evidenced by supportive businesses, youth organizations, faith based groups, & sense of pride. Current project is a community center for ALL community members to gather. #suptchat
Gotta go peeps! Family time....#suptchat A8: Our parent outreach, community collaboration, and overal parental involvement is extensive! All of our efforts point to meeting the needs of all students and families.
A6: Our current assessment system is not geared toward equity. We say our students have different needs, yet we access them in the same manner with the same platform. #Suptchat
A7. #SuptChat Our community wants to make sure that our students have facilities/resources comparable to others in the metro Jackson area. Therefore, a bond issued was passed last school year to make the necessary changes to buildings and provide 1:1 to students.
A5: Culturally Responsive Teaching and The Brain: Promoting Authentic Engagement and Rigor Among Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Students by Zaretta Hammond focuses on a framework for Ss engagement. #suptchat
A7: Bloomingdale serves as a Character Counts Community thanks to some visionary leadership long before I arrived: students and community raising the bar on citizenship, kindness, and responsibility, right @GSmit4Character ? #suptchat
A7) I have utilized the municipal drug alliances in New Jersey. Their programming can be highly varied and very supportive for equity initiatives within your town. They are also incredibly supportive. #suptchat
@npolyak#SuptChat what an incredible chat tonight! 2019 can be the year of change. Thank you people from 18 US states! IL WI MS AL AR VT ND PA CA IN OH FL TX GA MI UT VA NJ wow
A7: We have community partners that allow more children to access preschool in the community. We are also fortunate to have partners that provide for the social emotional needs of students and support for families #suptchat
A7: Caring organizations such as the Middletown Community Foundation, @FutureCenterMHS@CBI_Middletown represent a united community working to invest in the future of "each" student. #suptchat#ThisIsWe
A7 #suptchat - We are partnered with Hooves of Hope and Family Gateway Services in the community that helps to provide resources for students and families with social and emotional needs. This also includes our faith based groups.
#suptchat A8: The most imp. thing I can do as a supt. is ensure everyone has a voice. It does not matter to me the title/role you play in the org, your thoughts matter. So, I hold listening tours and make it a point to stop and chat with staff and Ss alike when I visit schools.
A8: We continue to inform stakeholders that culture & climate is our top improvement priority and equity is a piece of that. We continue to have conversations, solicit feedback and share what we learn. #suptchat
A8: How do you show your school community that you value inclusion? #SuptChat Board of Ed presentations, resource allocation (time & money) to inclusive events (like disability awareness events), include multiple voices at all tables, use surveys & act on voices #112Leads
#suptchat A8: The most imp. thing I can do as a supt. is ensure everyone has a voice. It does not matter to me the title/role you play in the org, your thoughts matter. So, I hold listening tours and make it a point to stop and chat with staff and Ss alike when I visit schools.
A8: Inclusion is best identified when those closest to it don’t even view it with that label. It’s just another means by which real personalized learning is in place for EACH student, especially our Ss who need our supports the most! #SuptChat
A8: I shared this with #suptchat before - but our Bilingual Theater Program (Teatro Leyden) is one way we reinforce inclusion with our schools and community! https://t.co/q0Sq74ar3M#suptchat
A8: Our students with severe cognitive disabilities are included in general ed classrooms both as a semester class and as an invitation for a specific lesson in a foreign language, music, theater or art classroom.
#suptchat
A8. We look for ways to acknowledge the accomplishments of all members and promote the idea that success is also individualized. Set students and staff up for success and let them know they belong and are valued members of our @NorthernLehigh community! #suptchat
A6: regarding assessment, there has to be multiple opportunities for students to demonstrate understanding and skills. Like I’ve seen in other answers, voice and choice is huge. #suptchat
A5 part 2: Hard to pick. There are so many. For White Folks Who Teach in the Hood... and the Rest of Y'all Too...by Christopher Emdin The real experiences & stories shared provide much needed perspective. #suptchat
#suptchat A8: We show our school community that we value inclusion when we reward growth, not only academic growth, but in attitude, effort, grit, support of others! We #believein180 days of impact to focus on continuous, sustained effort throughout the year!
D13 has been a leader in helping all student to not only do their best work but become their best self, serving as an initiative that is education based but community embraced. #suptchat
A7: Bloomingdale serves as a Character Counts Community thanks to some visionary leadership long before I arrived: students and community raising the bar on citizenship, kindness, and responsibility, right @GSmit4Character ? #suptchat
We look forward to seeing you on February 6, 2019 #suptchat focused on the @aasahq National Conference for Education: Effective Leadership Creates Success @npolyak
A8: Equity is embedded in our District vision, mission, and beliefs. Our community is very supportive of co-teaching & dual language programs, and community members were part of the planning of both programs. It's all about communication, both successes and challenges #suptchat
#suptchat@cpacatte Gurnee D56 superintendent. We will begin working on equity issues with a connection at Northwestern. We will be working with the BOE, District Office abs admin. We have four sessions planned to create a common language and vision for this work.
A8 For us and for everyone, I think that language is important. People notice when you use people first language (i.e. person with a disability rather than a disabled person). Beyond that, include those unlike you in your circles & you'll have a much better experience. #suptchat
A8) Keep opening the doors (physically and via social media) to the community to show them that their schools are and should be THE gem in your town. In doing such, many civic groups will unite around them, bringing those together. #suptchat
A8. #SuptChat The THS Admin works as a team and we truly take the time to listen to concerns from teachers, students, and parents. We work tirelessly to develop and implement plans that will benefit all students.
A8 #suptchat - Be intentional about inclusion by providing the resources and professional development necessary to ALL staff (certified and non-certified, support staff, bus drivers, custodians, cafeteria, office staff, etc.)
A8: providing space to hear multiple perspectives and hear a variety of stories. Encouraging voice from all stakeholders but also ensuring that voice is valued and, most importantly, has power. #suptchat
A5: Being a kid from a unique background, I use that experience to frame my stance on equity. However, my favorite book is Cultural Responsiveness and the Brain @Ready4rigor I love you Zaretta Hammond. #suptchat
#suptchat - Thank you Mike and Nick for providing this opportunity for us to grow and be challenged. There is a lot of great wisdom coming through this chat. We are better together! Larry
Thank you for the oppt to launch the new year with learning @mikelubelfeld@npolyak & #SuptChat PLN!
Will need to catch up with all the feeds as it went way way too fast!!! Head still spinning trying to keep up! :)
Always so much to learn :)
A1: Sarah Said, Director of Language and Equity Programs, in an Illinois entity. My gift, time... lots of time this year for special memories. Picking and choosing questions, just finished making dinner. #suptchat
A7: Our district hosts a “Taller mujeres empoderadas” (empowering women) led by a parent, for parents. It’s a series of workshops that lead women to identify and set a goal; several weeks after the series ends they regroup to showcase progress on their goals. #suptchat
#SuptChat My apologies. I was on Mountain time. I am Dr. Aaron J. Griffen, Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at DSST Public Schools in Denver, Colorado. My favorite holiday gift each year, is literally Old Spice Body Wash. Love it.
In this article, @courageousdove explains why schools cannot achieve racial equity without explicit processes for leaders & staff to examine their personal, professional, & organizational beliefs about race: https://t.co/Y7MZdDQtd9#EdEquity#Top10Tweets2018
This is the very definition Universal Design for Learning- eliminating barriers for the sake of all learners. I’m not a Supt. But love this topic and so looking forward to following the discussion. Perfect graphic! #suptchat
A3: Equity in education provides personalized and authentic opportunity, support and resources for all learners, versus one size fits all or based on your zip code.
What if we address the source of inequity and get rid of the barrier all together?! #SuptChat
#SuptChat A1: Our leadership team partners with the National Equity Project to develop Affinity and Open Dialogue Spaces to allow for voice among diverse identities. We also partner with schools and home office teams to develop specifically designed data driven Equity Sessions.
A3: The "wall" is really a metaphor, representing all of the barriers put in place over many decades. This cMap shows many of those "walls". All need to be removed. Building public will to do that requires huge education effort. https://t.co/qIujxEHKTA#suptchat
#suptchat A2: Our network is working to remove equity gaps by conducting urban policy analyses in order to triangulate our data. We review academic data, behavioral data and survey data (student and staff culture data) to ID trends and correlations that result in Equity Gaps.
A7 @MasonSchools we host open #commUNITYconversations to engage our community in one of our top priorities- #InlcusiveExcellence We have partnered w DEI experts to help us take our talk to actions including- student voice, recruitment & retentions, & common expectations #SuptChat
Watch for @mikelubelfeld to send out the archive. Sometimes it's easier to go back and re-read the responses when you have time to digest it all. #suptchat
#suptchat A3: Equality sustains status quo. Those with power remain with power & privilege. Equity provides each according to their needs. If we continue to provide "EQUITY" without Inclusion, we maintain status quo. "Equity" then is base on our need not those we serve.
#suptchat A4: Our DEI Coordinator is responsible for Diversity Recruitment. We partner with Talent Acquisition and Leadership Development to craft a plan that targets community stakeholders, HBCUs, HSIs, and MSIs. We also leverage referrals from Diverse personnel.
#suptchat A5: I tend to go to the sources although some feel they are outdated: Cultural Responsiveness, Gay (2010); Cultural Relevance Ladson-Billings (2004); and James A. Banks. These folks are two of the most cited individuals when it comes to Equity work in schools.
