We chat every Tuesday night at 8:30-9:30 pm CST. All are welcome, especially EarlyEd teachers, leaders & experts. Co-founded & moderated by @techwnancy @JessicaCabeen & @VealHeidi
Welcome to #ECEchat We’re excited to be feturing the 3rd of 3 #HackingEarlyLearning chats w/ our own @JessicaCabeen hosting!
Please share your name, where you're from & what you do.
A1. As a program evaluator, I’m in other Ts rooms ALL of the time. I have learned so much from observing stellar Ts. I can’t wait to return to the classroom and implement all of the new tricks I’ve gathered. #ECEchat
A1 Every time I visit, I learn how far is the distance between learning in a PD workshop vs. learning by seeing strategies in action in a classroom - for better or worse :) #ecechat
A1 I learned how easy I could add movement to lessons!! (Stand up & tell me, walk & talk, scavenger hunt) & different ideas for center activities & classroom management #ecechat
A1: I don't have very much experience, but I think that it will be very valuable to visit other teachers' classroom to get motivated to try new techniques and to learn from them #ECEchat
A1. Today I got to see relationships at work. Amazing teacher and para built relationships quickly and sincerely and you feel@it when you walk in. #ECEchat
A1: I love to see how the room is set up. From furniture to how activities and items are presented to invite play and exploration. There are always so many fantastic ideas! #ECEChat
A1: I learn something every time I enter a classroom! I often watch and think, "dang, I should have done that as a teacher...". I think that means I'm a pretty blessed admin!! #GardensLearn#ECEchat
A1: I always learn the most from other Ts. New ways to teach concepts, new games, organization, seating. Each teacher brings something different. #ECEChat
A1: I had the opportunity to hang out and observe in my daughter’s classroom twice recently and I learned her teacher is fabulous. She incorporates movement breaks, goes over expectations in numerous ways, and clearly loves each of her Ss. We are blessed! #ecechat
A1 All I need to know, I learned in another teacher's classroom...pun on Robert Fulghum's title, but its true. We need to share in order to become better. We have different talents;I am lucky to work with a fantastic storyteller;I am in awe of how she captivates the Ss #ecechat
A1 I find so often teachers tell me what “can’t be done” until they walk into another teacher’s classroom and see it IS being done! So powerful - I wish schools would build more time for this into schedules. #ECEchat
I couldn't agree more!! I think lower grade levels need to see what higher levels are expected to do and vice versa! We can all learn from each other #ecechat
A2 I think this is another question that should be part of system - a whole school approach with time and support from admins for teachers within and across grades to collaborate. Wouldn’t that be great?? #ecechat
hi #ecechat. I'm Sara, a kindergarten teacher at an independent school in Lake Tahoe, NV. I love listening to and learning from how teachers speak with their students. How they show care and respect and love!
A2. We did kindergarten visits today and we were just commenting about having the K teachers come to our school and visit us and see all the kids can do! #ECEchat
A2 And maybe we should think of some kind of professional development to prepare for this kind of collaboration. Really, can any of you think of college course that prepared you for that collaborative work? #ECEChat
A2 Reach out to your Admin. Make plans to visit other grade levels. its good to see where Ss have been and where they will be going. Great perspective as a T #ecechat
A2: I teach ELLs in K5 but I've visited middle school students and have collaborated with teachers on strategies that could work for all students! Kudos to colleagues: @sarahdavisESL@jaslyn4ESL and @DTiradoESL#eceChat
A2:Ask your Admin to schedule time for it or for them to cover your class. We love to help others collaborate. Go on a prep, your lunch or make time - be creative. If it’s important make it happen. #ecechat
A2: I have not tried it, but I have seen the Pineapple feedback forms posted outside teachers' classrooms. They welcome visitors and feedback. #ECEchat
A2 we’ve got PLCs w/1st grade so we connect a lot, I also chat with Ts at other grade levels. Looking the other way, I’d love to go observe pre-k one day & see where my Ss are coming from #ecechat
A2 Build relationships with your coworkers; pop into their rooms, compliment their hard work, offer to help out, ask to observe, start a conversation about what you can do to best prepare your students for their classroom! #ecechat
A2: As a teacher, my building had 2 section of each grade level, we would do a mix of grade level meetings and then also meet across grade levels K-5 to get alignment. It was so helpful!! #ecechat
A2 And maybe we should think of some kind of professional development to prepare for this kind of collaboration. Really, can any of you think of college course that prepared you for that collaborative work? #ECEChat
A2 but what is more challenging? meeting with other grade levels when you are a private preschool provider or Head Start and not part of the K-5 system - and yet that kind of collaboration is where the real magic happens! #ECEchat
A2: My Ss did some PBL last week and opened a donut shop. They invited all staff members to come and enjoy the donuts. I also have Ss share various projects they make throughout the week. They select at least 1 staff member to show their work to each time. #ecechat
After a year at my new school, I had sort of figured out who I could best learn a lot from and just asked what their schedules were. So I try to observe when I have a prep and they don't. Would love to implement #observeme protocol but am working slowly with staff! #ecechat
We have invited in all preK-public, private and parochial for PD-it is so relevant and with that many early educators the learning is very relevant for everyone. #ECEChat
A1: I am always learning by walking around...station ideas, soft start suggestions, ways to post Anchor Charts, books to read, hanging sight words is my recent favorite hack. #ECEchat
A2. It would be great to sit down with 1st grade Ts to discuss what they look for when our Ss come up and what we need to work on more. I would love to spend more time with other grades during PLC, or other times #ecechat
https://t.co/wAfTkKpgMa often do you make time to sit in classrooms that your students are coming from or going to? Can you find one way to make that happen? #ECEchat
My teachers are amazing with this! They meet any chance they can get and connect using both face to face and social media opportunities. They also use to give up lunch time to collaborate! We also are very lucky to have PLC late start 1x month #ECEChat#mortonchat
A2.2. We have a family sharing meeting with Head Start staff where we get to learn about our incoming families. It’s a pre-planning meeting to help us place students accordingly. #ECEchat
Honestly its all about building relationships and being open to feedback! Invite others into your room, ask for ideas from others, share, share, share! You will do great! Oh and always #ecechat
A2: I try to connect with other teachers by sitting with them at faculty meetings, speaking in the workrooms...I think that I could be better at having intentional conversations to help with school-wide learning. #ECEChat
RT https://t.co/4euSEnghh6 often do you make time to sit in classrooms that your students are coming from or going to? Can you find one way to make that happen? #ECEChat
A3 When I was a PK teacher I would pop into kinder or plan activities with kinder occasionally. Now as a district leader I haven’t done that, looks like I need to make time to do just that! #ecechat
Thank u @emilyfranESL for visiting our class, sharing your story & inspiring us. We don’t work in the same building anymore, but thank u 4 always supporting me & now touching my Ss lives! #ELL#newcomers#ELLsCan 💕👏🏼💕
As an administrator I wish I could do more as well. One way I can 'see' what is going on is I am invited into classroom facebook groups/or remind groups. Then at night (like right before the chat) I can take a peek at what I missed and connect with students tomorrow. #ECEChat
A3: My situation is a bit different because I never know when I'll get a new student & I could get them within a day. I would love to have more opportunities to watch them from their sending school beforehand. If they are already at our school, I know them pretty well. #ecechat
A3 I worked with a school that assigned teachers to be learning partners - they had topics to look for, forms to record their observations, and times scheduled for partner sharing and learning together throughout an entire year. Then they switched partners each year #ecechat
A3: This is something I'd love to do. I want to be in the lunchroom, hang out with Ss and be outside at recess... I want to spend more "quality" time with my Ss. #ecechat
https://t.co/wAfTkKpgMa often do you make time to sit in classrooms that your students are coming from or going to? Can you find one way to make that happen? #ECEchat
Q4: Besides the report card and the cumulative file-how do you communicate the specific skills, needs and sparks your students have gain during the year to the next teacher/school? #ECEchat
For sure -- I think being intentional and positive. This time of year there is a lot of fatigue, negativity and end of the year craziness. I don't want to get bogged down in that so I am intentionally positive! #ecechat
Q4: Besides the report card and the cumulative file-how do you communicate the specific skills, needs and sparks your students have gain during the year to the next teacher/school? #ECEchat
The donut shop sounds awesome and I love the authentic audiences for your pbls! What grade students were those? I'm looking for some great PBLs that I can implement with my kindergarteners next school year. #ecechat
A4 We share through Google Drive, but next year we will be a @Seesaw for school Pre-K-2!! All the "good stuff" will follow the Ss from year to year. Woohoo! #ecechat
A4: When class lists would come out I couldn’t wait to find out where my students ended up… however I do believe it is a fine line in sharing… remember to always be kind! #ecechat
A5. We do student reviews of all of our students every 9 week’s. On the final one, we concentrate on information to forward to kindergarten administrators, counselors, nurses. #ECEchat
A4 we’ve had informal convos about Ss at our K/1 PLC. We are also having kids write a letter to their 1st grade teacher telling about themselves (plus they can see their writing level!) #ecechat
I hate to make it required, but it could be a way to get it started. My principal used to require us to visit one grade level above and one below every 9 weeks. #ECEchat

RT Q4: Besides the report card and the cumulative file-how do you communicate the specific skills, needs and sparks your students have gain during the year to the next teacher/school? #ECEchat
A4: We use a confidential form where teachers can input valuable information on each student. We also have face to face transition meetings where teachers from the previous and incoming year can collaborate to support Ss. #ecechat
Q4: Besides the report card and the cumulative file-how do you communicate the specific skills, needs and sparks your students have gain during the year to the next teacher/school? #ECEchat
A4: I deal with very young kids 2/3 year olds. During the year I keep notes on Ss about skills, developmental progress, etc. I often share those with the next teacher when we sit down to chat about incoming students. We also chat regularly during the year. #ecechat
Margaret, Where do you hang the sight words? I have a very traditional word wall with pocket charts so the kids can take the cards out and use them. But is there a better way?! #ecechat
A4: We fill out transition forms for students and leave contact information if needed. Attend community gatherings to get to know and communicate with families. #ECEchat
A4: I feel like the negative comments about students are the first ones to be shared from teacher to teacher...
My goal is to INTENTIONALLY stop myself from the negative and provide students' strengths FIRST
#eceChat
Q4: Besides the report card and the cumulative file-how do you communicate the specific skills, needs and sparks your students have gain during the year to the next teacher/school? #ECEchat
A4: I have many of my Ss again next year. If they're moving to another class, I'm in frequent verbal communication with the new teacher. If they transition to a different school, I complete graphs to show how they're doing socially/emotionally/behaviorally/academically #ecechat
A4: I love this idea, the Ts pass along a "pink" sheet from K on. This sheet allows Ts to not only see the progression of Ss but also see what strategies have worked/not worked over the years. #ecechat

A4: sort our students using Pink and Blue data sheets. Sheets have a spot 4 current teacher to make notes so they the teacher the next year can help the student in specific areas. We also have a Tier paperwork 4 struggling Ss: interventions and next steps noted. #ecechat
Q5 I like going in after the Ss have left and say "I saw you doing ___." Will you share how you do that or may I come watch one day? I also take photos of items that catch my eye in other rooms with permission of course. #ecechat
A5: I've offered intervention to specific students and meanwhile I get a glance of what's happening in the grade level :)
I help a student and I learn as an observant
#ecechat
#ECEChat A5: my classroom does not have air conditioning..so in August and May..we join one of the air conditioned classrooms for a few hours to keep cool. Great time to see how others teach!
A5. Every once in a while, before PLCs, I ask teachers to find a partner they don’t see very often. Once paired, they go to each other’s classrooms then return to share something they could use in their rooms. We’ve also had scavenger hunts after school! #ECEchat
A5: I wish we didn't have to be creative! I wish we could schedule (or not) times for others to benefit from our colleges strengths and gifts!! #ecechat
A5: As a principal, it’s easier- simply visit the room. Talk to the teacher, ask if you can help or just walk in the room. Was harder as a teacher. Worked next to amazing K-Teachers and told them how I wanted to improve. They told me when to come in to observe. #ecechat#trust
A5: I barely even get to leave my own classroom to use the bathroom or get lunch, so this is a tough one for me. I observe classrooms at private schools to provide suggestions to incorporate ways to meet the needs of special learners. I also present to their staff. #ecechat

A5: Reading to Ss is still one of my most favorite things. I try to invite myself in whenever I can. I also tell staff to let me know if they are doing special projects, help with testing, cover their rooms... Sharing in student learning is the best part of my job! #ecechat
so important to share what the positives...so many negatives in today's world-students' don't need to be apart of that noise! #ECEChat#HackingEarlyLearning

A6: Last summer I recorded myself during a summer lesson...its intimidating but a great way to get feedback. We can share these lessons with each other.
I know my great friend and author @MsSalvac does this and its amazing! #ecechathttps://t.co/7D74To8lRl
A6 Use technology to see into other rooms all over the state, country and/or world. Wouldn't it be great if #ecechat participates could share their rooms with each other...WOW!

A6: I think using Twitter chats like this one are great ways of learning new ideas and connecting with other teachers along with using other technologies. #ECEchat
A6: I have my para in my classroom videotape lessons that I teach. We are then encouraged to share them at PD/PLC as well. Great reflective feedback. #ECEchat
A6 mostly lurking tonight but def gained some great ideas. Looking forward to asking some Ts if I can come observe yet this year in my own building & next year perhaps others in or outside of our district #ecechat
A6: I enjoy connecting and learning from Ts on Twitter chats. I have learned so much this school year! I have been encouraged to try new things and my Ss have truly benefited from my growth through what I've learned from my PLN on Twitter...so thank you! #ecechat
