#akedchat Larissa in Anchorage - I’ve been the Secondary ELA Coordinator for the last year and a half. I also taught middle school for 4 years and high school English for 15 years.
#AKEdChat Jumping in for a few min. It is 11pm in Michigan where I teache K-4 resource kiddos. My 24th year~ Shout out to @CorbellHiAk my amazing sis who teaches in Anchor Point, AK
@PParsch Hello, I'm Pat Parsch and I am an academic advisor at Frontier Charter School, a homeschool program, in Anchorage. I've been in this role for fourteen years. #AkEdChat
I'm Tammy Morris. I taught elementary for 17 years in Fairbanks and Ketchikan, spent 3 yrs as Tech Coordinator in Ktn, and then retired from sch districts to be an independent consultant for the last 9 yrs; now based in Juneau. #akedchat
I’d have to say #NPC2018 was my favorite out of state! This year the AK Principal conference was amazing! It inspired me to propose and get accepted to speak at #NPC2019! #akedchat
#akedchat A1: I've been to many, many conferences in my years as an educator, so it's really hard to choose! I LOVE, LOVE #ASTE and wouldn't miss it, but #akeffective RTI/MTSS is also super fabulous. Oh, and then there's ISTE. Who comes up with these hard questions??
Pat @PParsch A1 A weekend technology conference that was held at the King Career Center about ten years ago. The workshops were informative and I was able to earn one college credit. #AkEdChat
#akedchat I regularly attended the @goAPEL summer conference in Lousiana, NeLATM spring math conference as a presenter, LA reading conference, National Whole Brain Teaching in Alexandria LA...
I have to agree! I even felt like the PBS trip to New York for the taping was a conference. Anytime you get passionate teachers together learning takes place! #akedchat
The Positive Energy really creates a great conference. Learning what others do to inspire and motivate and how they do it really gets me to think about what I do to impact those around me! #akedchat
#AKEdChat A3- Lots of time for teachers to actually share ideas & socialize. I think that anytime passionate teachers can share what we do... the best learning takes place. Too much sit and get does not stay in our brains unlike sharing of real classroom examples...
Pat @PParsch A2 When there are lots of opportunities for people to interact with each other and the presenters allow a forum for that to happen.#AkEdChat

I tried to lead an edcamp at #akeffective this year, but it didn't go well! I think the end of a conference is a tough time to have an edcamp! #akedchat
#akedchat Choose sessions that draw you in. Take written notes to avoid distractions. Go with an open mind. Don't be afraid to ask questions and get contact information for people who you think can improve your practice beyond that day.
#AKEdChat A4 I have learned that trying to jam pack sessions into every minute of the conference is not the best sometimes. Feeling overwhelming rushed to get from session to session causes stress that is not needed
Ours was modified meaning we did 6 mini sessions and our staff went to all. We did ask staff what they wanted/needed as training upfront so we had ideas, assigned speaker ahead of time. They were successful! #akedchat

#AKEdChat Have a great night. Almost 11:30pm Gotta hit the hay. My morning is coming up quick~ Thanks for letting me drop in and chat with my "home state peeps"
I think it's important to attend every session you can attend. Occasionally you may need a break to process, but when you leave you won't have the same access to the learning. Take advantage of it! #akedchat
#akedchat Be present, be intentional, meet new thought partners, bring the knowledge back to your colleagues even if it’s not “officially presented at a staff meeting”!

Pat @PParsch A5 I usually take lots of notes and take pictures. It helps if the presenters provide handouts with references. Having a plan on how you can implement some of the strategies at your school helps you stay motivated and goal driven.#AkEdChat
#akedchat Use it or lose it...ha ha. Share, share, share...tweet about it, talk to participants during the conference breakouts etc. Keep the conference materials that resonate with you in a prominent spot to reference quickly once home.
#akedchat A good conference provides: some affirmation of what you're already doing right, new knowledge to process, and practical ideas and strategies to implement as soon as you get back to your home base.
#akedchat Participating in the credit class associated with the conference is an excellent way to extend the conference experience and dig deeper into your learning.
#akedchat I do, too! And I open up new tabs for new sites I'm introduced to. Then I can go back and explore those sites late. If it's already opened in a tab, I'm more likely to get back to it.
#akedchat I really like to tweet during the experience, but sometimes I go to my notes afterward and tweet some gems. Hard to do it all at once - keep notes, refer to resources, tweet ... No wonder I'm always so tired after a conference!
I have to agree with Tammy on this one. Plan your day ahead. Bring a friend to compare notes at a coffee shop or pub at the end of the day. But don't be afraid of that empty time slot... you never know what you might find serendipitously. #akedchat
A6: In the past, when I find good material that will help my fellow teachers, I will bring it up in our teacher meetings. I am a big sharer when I find a great lesson plan, a great strategy, or research based information that will benefit our students. #akedchat
@PParsch#AkEdChat A6 I like to put my notes into google docs and share it with others. Sometimes I will ask my principal for a brief time to share at a staff meeting.
Same here! I find that in addition to spreading the good ideas I heard, it helps me cement things I really want to try in my own room. Also generates great ideas from folks who weren't able to attend. #akedchat
Was introduced to a fantastic online tool that helps students look at and use raw data https://t.co/uFGz1UWgOA
SO USEFUL! Millions of uses for it other than just having kids crunch data, too. #akedchat
#akedchat Compared to the whole staff, so few are privileged to attend conferences. I think it's the attendees' responsibility to share the experience with the staff. Often this is during a staff meeting, but could also be short & quick regularly scheduled emails with tidbits.
#akedchat A7: Last conference I attended was #akeffective. Did a full-day https://t.co/QDGMjHqe2S Fundamentals training. The curriculum is fantastic! Unplugged activities in addition to the plugged. I even used some of them in a Computational Thinking class I'm teaching to Ts!
A7: Once at ASTE, I helped a presenter with some tech and as a thanks he gave me a mini-presentation on a bunch of augmented reality apps (DAQRI anatomy 4D, etc.) Amazing tools for student engagement, and many free options! #akedchat
I went to ISTE in 2011. It was life changing. I LOVED how BIG it was, but there is something to be said for the smaller conferences too, they can be just as rewarding. I was very inspired and motivated at SE AK Science and Math Camp a few years ago. #akedchat
A8: I think I will host one on speaking and listening in March. #AkEdChat I’d love some on professional/career decisions, finding inspiration and inspiring others, reflective practice, etc.
A8: I know it's pretty basic, but I'd love to hear how other people divide up kids for group works, small team stuff, etc. I have my bag of tricks, but it's always good to shake it up. #akedchat
#akedchat A7: At #LearningForward 18 a session on Designing & Delivering Adult Learning.
