  • Drtamssen Jun 5 @ 8:15 PM EDT
Great point!!! They love games... we love games! We just have to figure out the right game for them! #LaEdChat
    In reply to @AngelaL102223
  • derikthompson Jun 5 @ 8:16 PM EDT
A2: Students love recognition and adding gaming elements to a lesson allows for a student's hard work to be shown. I think it's important for students to know how to win and lose sometimes, so they can try harder. #LaEdChat
  • AngelaL102223 Jun 5 @ 8:17 PM EDT
A2: I think they are drawn to it because that’s what they know. #laedchat
  • Drtamssen Jun 5 @ 8:17 PM EDT
A2: I think that it is such a part of our society now... everything from reality shows to Mindcraft all have a gaming component. Students today are saturated with it... so as teachers we should embrace it and not shun it! #LaEdChat
    In reply to @derikthompson
  • abrown0712 Jun 5 @ 8:18 PM EDT
A2: Games are usually more interactive and multi-stepped. The graphics are more flashy and visually appealing. It can be fast paced. Games can just help build up the energy in the room, and Ss feed off of it. #LAedchat
  • pam_lew Jun 5 @ 8:18 PM EDT
A1: games help with retention because students engage and remember content #LaEdChat

Yes, School’s Over, but it’s not Game Over! Gaming in the Classroom Creep on in and introduce yourself! Where are you from? What do you teach? #LaEdChat
  • pam_lew Jun 5 @ 8:21 PM EDT
A2: students may be competitive, like team aspect of games--being able to interact; and they love motion and excitement--teachers are more outgoing and relaxed during games sometimes too. #LaEdChat
  • Dale_Chu Jun 5 @ 8:21 PM EDT
Pretty much what it boils down to. #LaEdChat
    In reply to @AngelaL102223

Question 3: What type of games do you currently use in your classroom? #LaEdChat
  • fmargret Jun 5 @ 8:25 PM EDT
Q2: Ss are able to use many skills and potentially even make human connections as they engage in gamification. @mr_isaacs is an expert! #LaEdChat
  • derikthompson Jun 5 @ 8:26 PM EDT
A3: My favorite game is #MinecraftEdu @PlayCraftLearn . It is so adaptable for many lessons and subjects and the students can not get enough of it. #LaEdChat
  • fmargret Jun 5 @ 8:27 PM EDT
A3: I offered an option for an ELA piece to be shown in @PlayCraftLearn (thanks @CurranCentral @m_drez @mr_isaacs for the inspiration). I hope to be able to do it again. Oh, and I’m Margret, and I teach 7-8 ELA in @Zacharyschools. #LaEdChat
  • fmargret Jun 5 @ 8:28 PM EDT
I’ve only gotten to get a taste of it, but I know the Ss were super excited. #LaEdChat
    In reply to @derikthompson, @PlayCraftLearn
  • abrown0712 Jun 5 @ 8:28 PM EDT
A3: Right now my Ss r really n2 @quizizz & @VocabularyCom Jams. I have a lot of other games, but Ss love these most. I've created card games 4 Ss to play like War with Greek & Roman leaders & achievements. I like to take games that they would play and make SS spin offs. #LaEdChat
  • pam_lew Jun 5 @ 8:28 PM EDT
A3: I love @playfanschool's Fantasy Geopolitcs, I love human board games with silly moves, my friend invented an amazing review game that is a mix of Settlers of Catan and Magic: brilliant! And small scale pair games are great for review. #LaEdChat
  • Drtamssen Jun 5 @ 8:29 PM EDT
A3: I know that our students and teachers love @GetKahoot --- really who does not! I wish we could use Mindcraft, but we are a Chromebook district. Only major negative we have found with the devices. #LaEdChat
    In reply to @derikthompson, @GetKahoot
  • fmargret Jun 5 @ 8:29 PM EDT
Hi Pam! I think that’s so important to remember that the interaction in these games really resonates with us, on a human level. #LaEdChat

Question 4: Is it possible to use gamified learning without technology? #LaEdChat
  • fmargret Jun 5 @ 8:35 PM EDT
@derikthompson, do you know about this? Thanks, Michael, as always. ❤️ #LaEdChat #edtech
  • derikthompson Jun 5 @ 8:36 PM EDT
A4: We have used @breakoutEDU and the kids and staff love it. It is fun and doesn't require a lot of tech. #LaEdChat
  • abrown0712 Jun 5 @ 8:37 PM EDT
A4: Yes, you can make spin off of board games & card games that Ss and Ts already play. My Ss & I made a US history Taboo game for Colonial-Reconstruction. We played it 4 closing everyday. When it's a game they are familiar w/it makes explaining it easier/unnecessary. #LaEdChat
  • Drtamssen Jun 5 @ 8:38 PM EDT
A4: Good question! I believe so-it is just more difficult! You can have non-techie leader boards! Wouldn't you say that some teachers have been doing this for years. Competitions for popcorn parties, etc. I think gaming has a loose definition and many applications. #LaEdChat
    In reply to @derikthompson
  • derikthompson Jun 5 @ 8:38 PM EDT
A4: I have several teachers who have added badges or house points to their lessons. Students love earning them and keeping track of their progress. No tech needed. #LaEdChat
  • pam_lew Jun 5 @ 8:38 PM EDT
A4: I can't believe I forgot breakouts!! I even do these at home with family and friends. The best! And we have lots of non-tech games. They do require a lot of prep and trial and error, but I like them better. I feel like they promote a stronger retention rate #LaEdChat
  • Drtamssen Jun 5 @ 8:39 PM EDT
I use to use the food chain game... it is still an oldie, but a goodie!!! #LaEdChat
    In reply to @abrown0712
  • derikthompson Jun 5 @ 8:40 PM EDT
Question 5: What’s the benefit of “fun” in games in the classroom? #LaEdChat
  • fmargret Jun 5 @ 8:40 PM EDT
Amber, this sounds FANTASTIC. I can only imagine how the kids engaged and dialogued with it! #LaEdChat
    In reply to @abrown0712
  • fmargret Jun 5 @ 8:41 PM EDT
A5: humans are complex, and we need fun to engage with content in new ways. #LaEdChat
  • derikthompson Jun 5 @ 8:42 PM EDT
A5: I think if the students are having fun and are happier, they are learning more from the lessons and the game elements. #LaEdChat
  • AngelaL102223 Jun 5 @ 8:42 PM EDT
A4: yes!!! @abrown0712had the kids make a game board like Risk with gummy bears! It was so fun! I love inclusion. I get to do fun creative things even when I’m having an uncreative day. Lol #laedchat
  • Drtamssen Jun 5 @ 8:43 PM EDT
I'm going to let @gcouros answer for me... Kids LOVE GAMING! #LaEdChat
    In reply to @derikthompson, @gcouros
  • fmargret Jun 5 @ 8:43 PM EDT
Yeah, and playing allows them to develop so many problem solving skills bc of that interpersonal communication. Such good things. :) #LaEdChat
    In reply to @abrown0712, @pam_lew
  • derikthompson Jun 5 @ 8:45 PM EDT
Question 6: Can you include parents in a gamified classroom? How so? #LaEdChat
  • fmargret Jun 5 @ 8:45 PM EDT
So fabulous. All of that just sounds fabulous. :) #LaEdChat
    In reply to @abrown0712
  • AngelaL102223 Jun 5 @ 8:47 PM EDT
A5: I think the kids are more engaged and willing to work if they are having fun. I’ll do anything to get them engaged in class. #laedchat
  • abrown0712 Jun 5 @ 8:47 PM EDT
A5: If the Ss are interested in it and are bored. They're not going to retain the information very well. Why not make it fun? Why not make them want to come to class? #LaEdChat
  • derikthompson Jun 5 @ 8:47 PM EDT
A6: Sometimes, I see backlash from parents who think gaming in the classroom is all fun and nothing gained. I have seen parents change their minds when I have invited them to play along or see what it's all about. #LaEdChat
  • fmargret Jun 5 @ 8:47 PM EDT
A6: every involvement starts with communication, so simply telling parents about it is a step in the right direction. #LaEdChat
  • Drtamssen Jun 5 @ 8:48 PM EDT
A6: I think there is always ways to include your parents.... my first thought is a @Flipgrid where the parents can communicate about game strategy or even an electronic scavenger hunt with parents on @Flipgrid!! #LaEdChat
    In reply to @derikthompson, @Flipgrid, @Flipgrid
  • abrown0712 Jun 5 @ 8:49 PM EDT
A6: I've had parents join in on the fun. They play the games we play in class at home together to review what we are doing in class. I see so much improvement with those students. #LaEdChat
  • pam_lew Jun 5 @ 8:49 PM EDT
A5: excitement! Students learn without working, students engage with teachers and peers positively, they retain knowledge, and they feel good-I love how they feel on game days. #LaEdChat
  • derikthompson Jun 5 @ 8:50 PM EDT
Question 7: How do you get your gaming started? What to read? Who to follow? #LaEdChat
  • derikthompson Jun 5 @ 8:50 PM EDT
A6: I've seen some school host family nights where they let parents play along and and learn about the various games and lessons. I think its a win-win. #LaEdChat
  • fmargret Jun 5 @ 8:51 PM EDT
Yes yes yes!! #FlipgridFever is here to stay. ❤️ #LaEdChat

  • derikthompson Jun 5 @ 8:52 PM EDT
