#WO2WorldChat is a monthly Twitter conversation for current educators and school leaders that takes place every 3rd Wednesday of the month at 8:30 PM EST. Diana DaCosta, along with 2 co-moderators from the West Orange Teacher Twitter Taskforce Team will host these monthly chats. #WO2WorldChat's mission is to promote collegiality, collaboration, and professional development beyond the confines of the traditional school day that in turn will promote the success of all students.
Welcome everyone! Thank you so much for joining us!! I'm Nicole McArdle and I teach 4th grade ELA at Washington. Let us know a little bit about yourself before we get started! #WO2WorldChat
Please introduce yourselves... Tell us a little about you! #WO2WorldChat
So happy to have everyone here! I'm Kristin Mindo. I am a resource teacher at Redwood. I teach 1st and 4th grade this year!
Hi I'm Diana Tech Integration Specialist from West Orange, NJ channeling my inner superhero warding off any negative energy of non #digcit behavior from goobers (as @thelivbits would say) Excited to join this #WO2WorldChat to talk #DigCit during #DigCitWeek!
A1: Digital citizenship means communicating & cultivating healthy, meaningful & respectful cyber relationships with others. My students & I put the same care & emphasis into being good cyber citizens as we do when being non-cyber citizens. #WO2WorldChat#DigitalCitizenship
A1 In ANY community, citizenship requires a balance between how I present myself & how I respectfully follow the mutual agreemnts of the grp 4 the greater good. DIGITAL citizenship means I consciously apply those strategies to my behaviors online #WO2WorldChat#DigCit#DigCitWeek
A1 Ss talking about this a lot today. In my words, only putting the best YOU out there. In their words, being kind, doing the right thing and using tech for GOOD
#WO2WorldChat
A1 Pt 2: The challenge abt digital citiznship is that you're interacting w people who haven't made MUTUAL agreements, who hide in anonymity OR who LIKE being outrageous; you hv to decide how YOU'll be in the face of the trolls should they show up #WO2WorldChat#DigCit#DigCitWeek
A1: Digital Citizenship is at the forefront of my technology lessons. Before we begin, I encourage Ss to be positive when working on projects online. I always remind Ss that anyone can see what they post, and using tech is a privilege not a right.
#WO2WorldChat
A1 To me it means belonging to or being a part of our digital world. With digital citizenship like membership in a country comes rights but more importantly, responsibilities! #WO2WorldChat
A1: Using resources online to their fullest potential, to make connections to the world around them, to learn new skills and strategies to communicate clearly and effectively! #WO2WorldChat#WO2World
A1: To me, #DigCit means being a respectful and appropriate online citizen. It is about teaching our Ss how to be safe and make good choices while using the internet. Ss need to know that even though they are behind a screen, their words have impact! #WO2WorldChat
A1: Digital citizenship is using technology to communicate in a positive way. It allows us to build healthy relationships and stay connected with people close to us and around the world. I emphasize a "kind" classroom... on and off line. #wo2worldchat
A1: #DigCit means putting your best self out there and understanding that your words and actions MATTER both online and in person. It is not a 1 & done lesson but an ongoing conversation #WO2WorldChat#WO2World ##DigCitWeek
A1 Digital Citizenship means to treat people with respect and kindness. Be careful with personal info and speak to people online the same way you would in person #WO2WorldChat
Hello! Joining from Connecticut. Annual #DigCitSummit alum.
A1) To me, digital citizenship is giving everyone a voice and the opportunity in a digital world to present oneself and others in a positive light. #WO2World#WO2WorldChat#DigCitWeek
A1: #digcit is a recognizing that in this digital age we have the 🌏 at our fingertips. Citizenship is the knowledge & responsibility that comes along with it. #WO2WorldChat
A1: Students harnessing the power of the Internet to expand their knowledge through collaboration & communication while still maintaining their identity & safety. #DigitalCitizenship#WO2WorldChat#WO2World
A2: Ways I teach my students digital tips & strategies: 1) I model positive digital citizenship & relationships with them & others so they can see what that entails. 2) We brainstorm & discuss ideas together, so they have ownership. #WO2WorldChat#DigitalCitizenship
A2: I remind them of the "Golden Rule." I give them "free reign" on the social platforms that we use, but remind them that it's a privilege & if they abuse it, they will not be able to use these collab. features. I remind them that I can see everything they post. #WO2WorldChat
A2 I just found out about a book called "Team Savv-i" by Casper Pieters--a #DigCit adventure novel. @DCSOOCed Have to get my hands on this one to promote digcit in my class! #WO2WorldChat
So important to teach into this bc Ss don't understand the permanent nature of their posts online and the power their words can have! If they are going to out their let's encourage #Digital4Good#WO2WorldChat
A2 Currently using Tiwtter #AmalPals slow chat to show Ss how to interact using social media. Using @thelivbits to to show Ss a real world example of a Digital Citzen.
#WO2WorldChat
A2 Remind students that behind the screen, behind the words are people. People with feelings, hopes and dreams just like you. We need to remind ourselves also that face to face collaboration & dialog is still extremely important. Practice that as well.#WO2WorldChat
A2 Tip #2: *Deleting a post made in an irrational moment does not make your embarrassment go away; Digital footprints are more like Digital Stains: Teach CONSCIOUSNESS / Teach PAUSE B4 POST / Teach into it @thelivbits#WO2Worldchat#DigCit#DigCitWeek
A2: I begin the year by including some digital citizenship mini-lessons as part of my introduction to Google Classroom. While the conversation begins there, it continues to be an ongoing discussion throughout the year. #WO2WorldChat
A2: I have a poster in my room that says THINK! T - true, H - helpful, I - inspiring, N - Necessary, K - Kind. If their participation online doesn't fall into these categories, then they need to reevaluate their role. #WO2WorldChat#wo2world
A2 Tip #3 Loved advice from @thelivbits during last wk's @woschools visit: If someone tries to dull your shine - BLOCK & BLOOM Carry on in your own toxic pool; I'll be blossoming over here w people who can control themselves #WO2Worldchat#DigCit#DigCitWeek
A2: I use a lot of visuals & mini lessons early in the year. We have a big talk not only about what digital citizenship is, but WHY it is so important. We also use accountable talk sentence starters to help guide us in our #DigCit journey. #WO2WorldChat
A2: Ways I teach my students digital tips & strategies: 1) I model positive digital citizenship & relationships with them & others so they can see what that entails. 2) We brainstorm & discuss ideas together, so they have ownership. #WO2WorldChat#DigitalCitizenship
A2: I'm looking forward to implementing T.A.G. feedback. It can be used in the classroom or online when commenting on the work of others. I like that it gives students guidelines for accountable talk. #wo2worldchat
A2: My mantra to students is that nothing is private online. Everything remains somewhere - so be mindful and err on the side of kindness. #WO2WorldChat#WO2World
A2: When Facebook was new back in my college days we were told, "Don't post anything that you wouldn't want sitting in a book on grandma's coffee table." Maybe I need to revive this saying... if it would disappoint grandma, it's probaby innappropriate. #wo2worldchat
A2: I use @thelivbits as a model to teach Ss about a message. This yr I asked Ss to come up their own message they would want to share w/ the 🌏 All year we’ll work on positive messages for the good of ALL! What do we want our message to be? #WO2WorldChat#avenueforchange
A3 Ss are learning to not give too much personal information, seek adult help if anything the least bit unsettling occurs and only use reputable tools.
#WO2WorldChat
A3: Safety in Social Media: Reminding Ss that they can STOP and THINK. T- is it True?, H- is it Helpful?, I- is it Inspiring?, N- is it Necessary, K- is it KIND? This is helpful bc it gets Ss thinking before they post anything. #WO2WorldChat
A3 Education & heightened awareness, examples, models, continual discussion around the BigBadWolves of SMedia are the way to lift awareness - as in anything; Teach the possibilities / Teach Strategies / Model #WO2Worldchat#DigCit#DigCitWeek
A3: My students & I always discuss safety tips such as 1) allowing parents to monitor activity 2) chatting with peers & friends they know 3) using any kind of safety mechanism (blocking people who harass them) 4) reporting negative communications with others #WO2WorldChat
I'm not a classroom teacher, but as a parent I like to model good digital citizenship through how I present myself on platforms such as these. I connect with the larger #DigCit community to demonstrate its importance. #WO2WorldChat
A3: My students & I always discuss safety tips such as 1) allowing parents to monitor activity 2) chatting with peers & friends they know 3) using any kind of safety mechanism (blocking people who harass them) 4) reporting negative communications with others #WO2WorldChat
A3: knowledge is power! The more we talk to students about what is out there, and show them how people can use social media negatively, they better they can prepare themselves to recognize danger. #WO2WorldChat#wo2world
A3: Students can keep themselves safe in a social media environment by being respectful of others, protecting their privacy, and staying safe. #WO2WorldChat
A3: Students need to be aware of what unsafe behavior looks like, and they also need to know who to turn to for help if they see this unsafe behavior online. #WO2WorldChat
A3 Students need to be aware of the information they are sharing, who they are sharing with and that their message is positive. If it's something they wouldn't want their parents or teachers to read, it's probably not a good choice. #WO2WorldChat
A3 They should stop and think about what they are sharing. If they are not sure they should check with a trusted adult (parents, teachers, older brothers/sisters) #WO2WorldChat
A3: Students need to be taught to be vigilant and aware of who they are communicating with. But, more importantly, Ss need to know they will be supported and praised for letting a grown up know when something isn't quite right on the Internet. #wo2worldchat
A3 #WO2WorldChat
Students should make their work private and only available to close friends, classmates, and families. Students should be aware of the idea of a digital tattoo and teachers should make this aware to students as often as needed to promote student safety.
I'm not a classroom teacher, but as a parent I like to model good digital citizenship through how I present myself on platforms such as these. I connect with the larger #DigCit community to demonstrate its importance. #WO2WorldChat
A1: Digital citizenship is empowering individuals to behave responsibly on the web. A list of do's more than a list of don'ts. NOt much diff from regular citizenship, how to make the world/society better. Digcit - how to make our virtual world better. #WO2WorldChat
A3: There are so many angles to this issue but teaching students about boundaries and how to maintain them offline & online is key. #WO2World#WO2WorldChat
A4: I always tell Ss be mindful of what they post on social media & the internet. Sadly, we've had some negative experiences BUT the POSITIVE is that it becomes a teachable moment & they learn to be mindful of what they post or leaving a negative digital footprint! #WO2WorldChat
A4 Deciding wht the PURPOSE of your online presence is gonna be, where you'll work yr brand/persona/cause helps PRE-decide wht you will/won't respond to. @Twitter is my pro spot; not gettin into some things w you; Other arenas are MY space #WO2WorldChat#DigCit#DigCitWeek
A4: Monitor/ minimize the effects of our "digital footprint"? Be positive, and remain neutral in your opinions when sharing on social media. It's okay to be honest about who you are, but try not to offend someone while doing it! It's okay to be different.
#WO2WorldChat
A4 Encouarging Ss to think twice before they post anything online. Showing how once somehing is posted, it is there forever! Again encouraging Ss to have a trusted adult help them with this Digital Journey
#WO2WorldChat
A4: We can minimize the negative impact of our digital footprint by being conscientious of the things that we create, post, and share online. #WO2WorldChat
A4: Adults, like students, need to use the THINK acronym before posting. Adult feel emboldened by the anonymity of being online but we must set the example for our kids. #wo2world#WO2WorldChat
A3: Children need to be TAUGHT how to use social responsibly. What to 👀 for and what to do if something feels wrong. Just as we teach our kids to stay safe at the park & not talk to strangers. It’s another aspect of life that we must T our children how to navigate. #WO2WorldChat
A4 Remember that everything we post is there forever- like a tattoo. You can cover it, try to delete it, but it is still there- forever and ever. Don't post anything that you don't want someone to read. No or in the future. #WO2WorldChat
A4: As adults we need to think twice before we hit "send" or "post." Kids emulate what they see from their parents, teachers, and role models. In a world where so many kids have a device in front of them, you never know what they may see. #wo2worldchat
A3: Ss can keep themselves safe by only sharing a positive message, being respectful to their peers, and learning from example! Ss need modeling for tech, just like any other subject matter! #Wo2WorldChat#WO2World#GidCit#digcitweek
A4: The imprint we all want to leave behind is one of peace, civility, kindness and a shared willingness to improve the world #positivedigitalfootprint#wo2worldCHAT
A4 As adults we need to be selective about our online presence and model staying positive and kind. For our students. we all need to remember that our digital footprint is forever #WO2WorldChat
A5: I set high expectations for students on how to respond to others through digital platform. We discuss the parameters. I give examples of what is positive vs. what is negative. I liken it to having a respectful conversation only its on digital platform. RESPECT!! #WO2WorldChat
A5 The more decisions you mk about what you will & won't engage w/ online, the more decisions, abt your online PURPOSE, the more focused your offense & defense can be. DECISION: Be Positive StayOnMsg #WO2Worldchat#DigCit#DigCitWeek
A5 Haven't let go of the reins yet. Just had this conversation with @dmdacosta13 and NSO Y2 collegues. Still modeling and talking with Ss appropritate commenting digitally. Going to open up the blogging comments next week!
#WO2WorldChat
A5: There is A LOT of modeling and use of accountable talk. There is also a lot of talk about putting yourself in the other person's shoes! Again, Ss need to realize that their words have just as great an impact online as they would if they said them in person #WO2WorldChat
A5 I expect students to be respectful to others- even if they have opinions that differ. That's ok, but there are ways to dialog and try to see the world from another vantage point. Think before you type! #WO2WorldChat
A5 I model for my students what the correct and incorrect ways are to respond to other students. We tie this into character ed so that studnets understand they can still hurt somone's feelings on social media if they respond in an unkind manner. #WO2WorldChat
A5: We set norms together for classroom dialog and when there's consensus we hold each other accountable to those norms. The norms also apply for digital dialog. #wo2worldchat
A5: Ss responses should be positive or constructive. Feedback doesn't always have to be nice, but it needs to be helpful to lead towards improvement. When Ss comment on recordings, I'm hoping they mention good things and things to work on! #wo2worldchat
A6 Whn cyberbullying happens nothing feels like a solution Best I've heard: fr @thelivbits Have a championing GRP (of adults/friends) who rally around the bully-ee & post only positive 'you're the best' support; others say disengage totally; #WO2Worldchat#DigCit#DigCitWeek
A6: Ho do we stand up to bullying & cyberbullying? REPORT! REPORT! and REPORT! Stick up for each other. Create a Zero Tolerance for Bullying/Cyberbullying environment that everyone adheres to & has a role in creating. Positive communication & REPORT bullying! #WO2WorldChat
My response as a parent is: Respectfully. And know when a response may be better offline, if you know the person. And know when and how to end the conversation. #WO2WorldChat#A5
A6 Keep your message positive, report any negative comments to someone you trust, don't engage with someone who is negative, Flood a negative response with positivity!! Show your support with only the best YOU. Don't be a bystander, leave your positive DIGITAL mark
#WO2WorldChat
A6: We can stand up to bullying and cyberbullying by setting clear guidelines about expectations when going online or communicating with others. Closely monitoring student behaviors can also help to minimize both. #WO2WorldChat
A6: Students need to learn that being an up-stander is not the same thing as a tattle-tale. We need to empower our students to protect themselves and each other, and be rewarded for doing so. #wo2world#WO2WorldChat
A6: Teaching Ss good digital citizenship. My hope is that Ss can help to "police" their classmates, and encourage each other to be positive while online. If they see something negative, Ss will have the tools to stand up against it. #WO2WorldChat
A5 #WO2WorldChat
Promote being positive when Ss are commenting on others work, promote safety for Ss about their personal information to protect their privacy. Tell Ss to tell an adult if they see someone being unkind online.
A6: We cannot be afraid to have this conversation with our students. They need to know who they can turn to for help, and also what to look for when it comes to cyberbullying. Knowledge is power in this case! #WO2WorldChat
A6: Part 2, Teaching students to not be bystanders when bullying is taking place, both online and IRL, can also go a long way in minimizing bullying and getting the victims the help that they need. #WO2WorldChat
A6: Never let any instance of bullying or cyberbullying go unaddressed. Either address it publicly or privately but ensure it gets resolved. #dontsweepitundertherug#WO2WorldChat#WO2World
A6 First, do not be afraid to block people from your sites who try to make themselves feel powerful by putting others down. Then if you know who they are, try to get them the help they they really need if you are in a position to do that #WO2WorldChat
Q6: When we someone from our #digitaltribe in trouble we stand up to the cyberbully and drown out the negative. It is so important for children and adults alike to have a support system online! Also using the #ICanHelp hashtag is helpful #WO2WorldChat@thelivbits@cyndisueboo
A6: Lift up those who have been bullied. Make them see their worth... I think it is also very valuable to work with the bullies- where is the anger and hatred stemming from? Many times it is a cry for help. #wo2worldchat
Think positive and you'll post positively. If you screw up publicly, acknowledge and pledge to do better publicly. You don't have to be perfect, but demonstrate willingness to grow. #WO2WorldChat A4
Q5 I expect my Ss to treat one another with respect. When I find out that they may be struggling presenting their best selves online, I use the situation(s) to teach them. #WO2WorldChat
A7 #WO2WorldChat Twitter, Flipgrid, SeeSaw, Instagram are some of my favorite platforms! Love connecting with #GRARefugee friends thru a shared #Flipgrid
A7 @Seesaw Blog and portfolio tools are a favorite with students, @padlet for Ss and @Twitter for myself to have a platform for learning and connecting!
#WO2WorldChat
A7: In school, I use Google Classroom every day. Beyond that, @EpicKidsBooks and @Flipgrid have been awesome additions over the past year. #WO2WorldChat
A7: My Ss and I love using Flipgrid and Google Classroom. Ss love being able to record a video to share their thoughts with the class. They also enjoy having class discussions, and being able to write (type) on Google Classroom.
#WO2WorldChat
A3: knowledge is power! The more we talk to students about what is out there, and show them how people can use social media negatively, they better they can prepare themselves to recognize danger. #WO2WorldChat#wo2world
A6 #WO2WorldChat
Stop- Log off the site where you see bullying happening.
Block- Don't respond back or talk to this person.
Record- Save message and show an adult.
Talk It Out- Tell a trusted adult or student.
Don't let yourself get lost in the cyberworld alone. Maintain relationships offline as much as you can. Develop allies online and off. #DigitalSafety#wo2worldCHAT A3
A4 - I make sure my 5th graders understand that it is more like a Digital Tattoo than a footprint due to its permanency. Don’t post anything you wouldn’t want your mom or gramma seeing! #WO2WorldChat
A7: In the classroom I love Padlet, Google Classroom, and Seesaw. Parents 💜 Seesaw because they're able to get a glimpse into what their child is doing in school. I also follow some fabulous teachers on Instagram that inspire me! #WO2WorldChat
A7 #WO2WorldChat
Seesaw, Flipgrid, and Padlet are all great especially for the littles. Love using them all. Mostly this year I have been using Flipgrid and Seesaw.
)A7: Quizlet Live is also AMAZING. So much fun. Forces the stuents to work together. My classes would play the whole period if I let them. Eengagment is off the charts. LOVE LOVE LOVE it! (Would make a great PD activity someday too @dmdacosta13) #wo2worldchat
This #WO2Worldchat was amazing- I love all the new voices that joined us this month- TY @MsMindo2 & @MissMcArdle4 for pushing past comfort zones and hosting this important conversation- I am inspired & hopeful #WO2World can flip the switch and #DeleteNegativity online
