Morning #EduGladiators Kathy from Waukesha Wisconsin Engagement look different that many decades ago : ) Teachers often apologized for not having enough time.
I am tossing around the idea as an LA teacher of students bringing a rubric home to go ver things with parents. Just to work on self reflection and Assessment. Conference with me after over their thoughts #edugladiators
A1 Giving kids authentic audiences for their projects and writing allows them time to practice skills in the classroom, but then really put it out there. #edugladiators
A1: Have students focus on being problem finders not just problem solvers. Inspire them to discover causes they are passionate about and get out of the way so you can witness the fun! #EduGladiators
A1: Service Learning can provide this role. Ss working in the community and learning about the area/people/need they serve. Win for all stakeholders #EduGladiators
I was trying to get my Ss to take risks like that at the beginning of the semester. I still had HS seniors asking "what if I'm wrong?" We walked a long road this semester. #EduGladiators
A1) As with Driver’s Ed making sure I am current with my knowledge, then planning, modeling, lots practice and reflection supporting young adults learning new skills. #EduGladiators

A1 I believe that kids need authentic learning experiences we have to take what happens in class and connect it to REAL LIFE here in MO the @BVCAPS program does that. Businesses present Ss w/problemsand they design real solutions #edugladiators
Oh I love that!! It's easy for us to get so caught up in helping them become better problem solvers, that we can forget to help them find & notice the problems #EduGladiators

A1: Our 5th Grade does a Shark Tank activity. Kids develop a product, research, and present. They need to develop product or program that could be used in a school setting. "Sharks" come in (me, Ps, Ts) to consider products. Lots of practical application there. #EduGladiators

Think of the possibilities for the classroom!!!!
Ss need to see what their learning in practical ways that are important in their daily lives. Memorizing facts doesn’t do that. Applicable academic and personal skills matter more #EduGladiators
A1: When Ss learn a new #edtech or other tool, I ask how they could use this in another class or outside of school. Make your English presentation more engaging. Promote your club or youth group. Create something that doesn't exist... #EduGladiators
A1. Drivers ed is a great example of how classes should be done. The seamless blending of content and application is huge. Can be done in science by connecting t's and s's to field researchersNY DEC invasive species program is doing this. #EduGladiators
A1: By being a flexible teacher. If we want Ss to think critically, then we should be wiling to get out of our comfort zone. You cannot teach the same way you always have. Times change. #edugladiators.
I get that many times with juniors in the beginning. I ask, "What's the worst that could happen?" Sometimes I ask, "OK, what grade do you need? You got it. Now let's go try and let's go learn." #EduGladiators
A2: Ts have to let go of the wheel to see if Ss can stand alone, just like driver’s ed. Ps need to do the same and give kids that freedom to be self-sufficient #EduGladiators
A2: I think the biggest pro is Ts realize Ss can and will take ownership. Biggest con is just like learning anything sometimes we go off the road. Ss get frustrated when things don't work just like Ts #edugladiators
I was trying to get my Ss to take risks like that at the beginning of the semester. I still had HS seniors asking "what if I'm wrong?" We walked a long road this semester. #EduGladiators
A2: So many Ts are hesitant to hand it over to Ss. Remember, we don't just give them the car on day 1 of drivers ed. We walk them through & build on previous lessons. Same w/ Ss centered learning. #EduGladiators
A2 Just as in driver's ed, Ts should prep Ss of common errors & possible situations. During the process, Ts guide Ss to make better decisions and notice what they may not see, but they are still behind the wheel. #edugladiators
A1: Allowing our Ss to engage in productive struggle in which they are making meaning of & taking ownership of what they are learning. "Purposeful struggle today means less re-teaching tomorrow." via @Edutopia#EduGladiators

A1: By being a flexible teacher. If we want Ss to think critically, then we should be wiling to get out of our comfort zone. You cannot teach the same way you always have. Times change. #edugladiators.
A2: Tt who aren’t encouraged to take risks find a comfort zone. I encourage staff to be a little renegade from time to time to benefit Ss. Don’t drive a pinto drive a monster truck #EduGladiators
Grades are such a huge component of what holds up progress in this area. Fine, I'll give you a grade on your reflection, but it's the process I want them to own not a random letter grade. #EduGladiators
A1: By being a flexible teacher. If we want Ss to think critically, then we should be wiling to get out of our comfort zone. You cannot teach the same way you always have. Times change. #edugladiators.
A2 Ss need to make mistakes to learn. Often Ts want to take over the wheel & correct the mistakes for Ss - it can be hard to stand off to the side so learning can happen #edugladiators
A2: Tt who aren’t encouraged to take risks find a comfort zone. I encourage staff to be a little renegade from time to time to benefit Ss. Don’t drive a pinto drive a monster truck #EduGladiators
A2: Admin needs to support the risk Ts see in letting go. Ts see management as a big challenge to Ss taking the wheel. Ts are also worried about test scores bc admin/BOE/public/gov't stresses them so much. #EduGladiators
A2: When you give the students power, you cannot stop their excitement. I’m going to post a video of our student choice stations in a minute. YOU CAN HEAR THEIR EXCITEMENT and you can literally see the wheels turning as they make connections. It’s beautiful. #edugladiators.
A2. T's need to prepare for what students may do, deep planning. It is also essential to recognize when it is OK and beneficial to go off Road and perhaps when it isn't. This line is challenging to discern. #edugladiators
A2: So many Ts are hesitant to hand it over to Ss. Remember, we don't just give them the car on day 1 of drivers ed. We walk them through & build on previous lessons. Same w/ Ss centered learning. #EduGladiators
A2 Ss need to make mistakes to learn. Often Ts want to take over the wheel & correct the mistakes for Ss - it can be hard to stand off to the side so learning can happen #edugladiators
When I hire Ts, I want them to understand and embrace their own personal Zone of Proximal Development. How else will they model that for their Ss? #edugladiators
I loved my Ss faces when they found out what a Pinto was during our 70's game. #EduGladiators "You drove a car that could blow up if it go rear-ended?!?"
A2) I have a class Twitter account and blog - collaborate on the content & sharing. Families can connect w/ outline of the day. Having a “real” person like, retweet or comment to them is always a celebration! They do keep an eye on impression stats too #EduGladiators
A2: As an IC nothing gives me greater joy than to see a Tt relinquish "control" & empower Ss to take the wheel & do the majority of the talking, thinking, problem solving, question posing. #EduGladiators
Totally agree with you Dennis, love seeing what the Ss come up with and where they go with the knowledge, explore new ideas, create authentic work #edugladiators
We're struggling with overprotective parents right now. They try to keep their kids from facing any challenges. And my office phone keeps ringing! #edugladiators
A2: We learn by doing - and I think we know that more as adults. Give Ss a chance to try, make mistakes, maybe fail, & learn. Help them reflect & process what happened so next time can be better! #edugladiators
A3: Ts should tap the brakes when Ss risk going too far off course and lose control. Should always protect our Ss even when giving them control #EduGladiators
A2: A lot of older Ss come to school expecting to know everything. When Ss say, "I don't know how to do that" I reply "That's why we come to school." Ss should all wear a bumper sticker that says "Student Driver" so we know they're still learning #edugladiators
Oh my goodness as a History Tt I was so guilty of this--I had a small globe that I would use as a talking stick in which oneSs would talk at a time. Now I want every Ss to have the whole world in his or her hands & ALL to engage in every question & task. #EduGladiators
A3: Whenever we see many misconceptions, we should “catch them” and redirect! Not completely tell them how to do it, but give them the path. Whenever we hear students being cruel and too critical, we need to address it and help smooth it over. #edugladiators
Backchannels create great -- albeit, often messy -- participation opportunities, too. Digital venues like todaysmeet, sticky notes, anything goes! #edugladiators
A3 The only time Ts should REALLY step in and stop kids in their learning process is when they're WAY off and won't find their way back. Tapping the brakes for mid-lesson instruction is usually most effective. #EduGladiators
A3: If our class/school is a comfy place to take risks & make mistakes, and we understand we learn by trying new things, we shouldn't have to use the brakes! #edugladiators
A3: Don't tap those brakes when they're struggling. It needs to be more like they're stuck in the snow. Rock it back and forth, go get other materials (wood, chains, etc...) find a way out. #EduGladiators
A3) If there is no danger I try not to tap the brakes. We are persistent in learning to accept frustration, how to deal with it & moving forward. Long discussions on failing vs failure. #EduGladiators
A2 for me this is an ongoing thing. Pros are when learners take the wheel they do the work & the learning Cons are if Ts don't inspect what they expect the learning intended might not occur clarity of expectation, modeling,& check ins are key to make it work #EduGladiators
A3: We should tap the breaks when we feel deeper reflection can occur. We should avoid tapping the brakes when our input doesn't improve the quality of the experience. #EduGladiators
A4: Celebrate Ss in variety of ways. All of us like to be recognized and get a pat on the back. No need for trophies, but setting expectations, acknowledging successes and build confidence #EduGladiators
A3 Be available in class, move around and talk w/Ss, listen to Qs, if it is something many Ss are struggling with, step in, also have Ss peer teach to help #edugladiators
🦃We hope you enjoyed today's #EduGladiators chat! Next week, we will be on hiatus celebrating #Thanksgiving with our family and friends. Mark your calendars for our return on December 2 8amCST/9amEST with a NEW series perfect for December!
#thankful#turkeyday#family1st
Right! Avoid the temptation of swooping in and robbing Ss of the chance to overcome the obstacle on their own or with the help of a peer #edugladiators
A4) We use ISTE Standards for Students as self-assigned badges as well as some of the Habit of Mind. Talking about creating skill demonstration badges. Young adults show them in their @BookCreatorApp learning artifacts #EduGladiators
A4: Every staff mtg now starts with celebrations and sharing. Ts can share personal or prof moments to celebrate. It's slowly taking off. Ts don't like to appear to "brag" #EduGladiators
Yep. Got to share the #growthmindset I needed to get our new podcast up and running. "I had no idea what I was doing & why it didn't work. Kept trying!" #edugladiators
The problem I have with this, is that Ss become so anxious with "failure" even if I don't give a grade. I desperately want a gradeless system! #edugladiators
A2: Allowing opportunities for student self-reflection and collaborative peer exchanges. Instead of just having progress reports from T's only, how about having students create their own progress reports that focus on their own self-reflection? #EduGladiators
A4: Celebrate Ss how they like to be appreciated - find out what makes them feel valued & praised! Not everyone loves public praise (me included!). #edugladiators
A4P2: We do a Principal's Pride board in every HR every week. Ts pick ex of S work or experience they are proud of. Doesn't have to be an A. Just something great that S did. Results on display in main hallway. #EduGladiators
A4 Make time to celebrate, no matter how big or small, recognize efforts, changes for positive and even failure/mistakes, all learning process #edugladiators
A4) We use ISTE Standards for Students as self-assigned badges as well as some of the Habit of Mind. Talking about creating skill demonstration badges. Young adults show them in their @BookCreatorApp learning artifacts #EduGladiators
Great idea. You're in Dubai, right? What time is it there? We're a small school with little $$ But if we can manage it, I'd love to share! #edugladiators
How I very practically provide opportunities for my Ss to assess their learning and find holes in their learning:
Color Coding Recall Attempts to Assess Learning
https://t.co/qfhAgH4XCL#edugladiators#edchat#aledchat
💙the shift to communicating to our Ss that there are different ways for them to get to their destination & demonstrate their learning. As my Pp would tell me use your #PataMobile aka walk 👣#EduGladiators
Maybe a rubric grading on effort? So it's more skill-based instead of outcome based? That might show what is valued! Or shouting out effort! #edugladiators
What’s the solution? Even mastery rubrics/transcripts still create the desire/pressure to receive highest assessment, right? Ss and Ps want to know where they stand. #EduGladiators
Thanks Bonnie :) If only I had realized a little earlier that the chat had started ;) was waiting for 9 am...forgetting the hour difference, sigh #edugladiators

A4P3: One T has a Wall of Pride in her room. Ss select their own work to be displayed. They can change it as often as they want. Sometimes she suggests something that could go on the wall if a S is shy. But great when they do it themselves. #EduGladiators
I hear you. I think it depends. A little fun can be good! I definitely think it's more about redirecting & refocusing than braking! Use that energy & excitement! #edugladiators
A4 this makes me think of building certificate programs of all types into "school" pushing kids to open courses to get certified in interest areas. A digital school w/in a school and a turn from computer class for keyboarding to 21st century skills #EduGladiators
We've been playing with ideas, but no matter what, that finish line at the end of the race, puts pressure on our Ss. Anxiety kills risk taking and learning #edugladiators
Totally agree. We just took time to do a quarter 1 staff reflection - it felt so good to share glows & grows with each other, & see we all can learn/grow! #edugladiators
Yup, use all the controls at our disposal. Maybe no brakes needed, just flip on hazard flashers, take foot off gas for moments deeper reflection is needed. #edugladiators
What's the finish line? A test? Does it have to be a test? Can it be a project? Can you use the principles of #UDL and give choices of how Ss show their learning? #edugladiators
The more I watch our PK-K Ss, that model of playing in centers/doing/having choices should work for all ages. Let Ss be active, have choice and create something meaningful. Ss can’t just be recipients of content #EduGladiators
No we don't have tests and our school is all free choice, PBL. But there are grades & when they get to 11th and 12th grades Ss panic about GPA & scholarships. #edugladiators
I'm growing increasingly skeptical of school-year finish lines. On one hand, checkpoints do help us assess progress; on the other hand, close inspections one renders the familiar ones artificial, false. Finals need not be so final. #edugladiators
Love that, but as PK-8, will the high schools to which our Ss apply be okay w/ that? Are your Ts trained on kind of feedback to provide? #EduGladiators
Of course... but all grades do not have to be based on mastery or accuracy. They can be on completion and/or effort. Ss could also get an accuracy grade & effort grade for the same assignment. #edugladiators
Q4: Ensure that the multiplier effect takes place. Be a representative of the process and product. Be a walking billboard. Conversations and collaboration about what we do and how it changes lives should be sung loud everywhere you go. #EduGladiators
Strong conversations are taking place @EdcampNJ today. The future is waiting for us to change the game. Super excited to create new paths starting today. #pln365#EduGladiators#EdCampNJ
Thx for kind message! What saved our son was that we spoke up, fought back, refused the school narrative that it was the kids' fault when they reported abuse The more we speak up for kids' rights, the better! #Courage#PushBoundEDU#TLAP#LLAP#EduGladiators
