The Breakfast Club – #BFC530 – is a 15 minute, 1 question Twitter chat every weekday. We chat in 4 timezones Mon-Fri – 5:30am Eastern, Central, Mountain, and Pacific Times. The mission of BFC is to empower participants to make a difference in education by engaging in consistent reflective practice in a supportive community that inspires and challenges one another.
I can't believe that I forgot that I get to spend today in the computer lab with my students taking a mandatory practice exam, so we are prepared for the 8 days of testing that we start next week. #bfc530
Of course we should assign homework, but we need to make it relevant and not busy work. I have friends who assign homework because it is required. Thank god ive never had to do that. #bfc530
Ahh Homework... at a senior level yes as students can do the independent stuff in their time and use the time with the teacher more productively... at a junior level, it better be relevant #bfc530
Great question! Resrarch shows that there are limited benefits in elem and MS. There is also concerns that hw creates a divide between those that get P support and those that do not #bfc530
Morning #bfc530 Ohhh OK One of my hot button issues. NO NO NO NO NO NO!
I have two kids in 6th & 7th grade. They have had homework since K. I have yet to see anything worth me giving up my family time for:(
I would certainly put less emphasis on it than I used to. I like to see more practice of skills happening in classrooms. Working at home helps with longer assignments that require more time over multiple days. #bfc530
Homework more and more for me is a time for my ELs to continue activities we are doing in class. I can’t remember the last time I said “For homework...” #bfc530
So that's an individual decision for each teacher...but for me, No. I don't "assign" anything other than the expectation that students master the course learning targets. They have total choice on what scaffolding I've provided to get there. Beauty of #CBE#bfc530
Homework more and more for me is a time for my ELs to continue activities we are doing in class. I can’t remember the last time I said “For homework...” #bfc530
My thoughts on homework have evolved. Like teachers, our students need time for self care. Here’s something I wrote on the issue. #bfc530#ncedhttps://t.co/9Sq5cyyuQ6
I forgot that I logged this Q to ask. I assign classwork that I give ample time to complete in class. If they do not finish, then it due the next class. I want kids to be a kid at home. Homework to a kid is like unpaid overtime to an adult. #bfc530
For me, homework came about when I felt my students needed to work on something more in depth than usual. Me, as the content and pedagogical expert in the room made a decision based on students progress. TRhats how it should be. #bfc530
I've given less and less hw every year. Next year reflection questions will be given for the week, and Ss will have a choice to complete optional practice questions online #iteachmath#bfc530
Homework for me for the most part is "You have an essay due by next Monday." This way they can work on it whenever they choose - wherever they choose. So it becomes an extension of our classroom. I don't do worksheets. #bfc530
I would certainly put less emphasis on it than I used to. I like to see more practice of skills happening in classrooms. Working at home helps with longer assignments that require more time over multiple days. #bfc530
No. Only thing I can find solid research on is reading. Reading actually helps. Busy work not so much...I do not count reading. We read every night.
#bfc530
I have to head out for a run, so I wanted to leave these thoughts...What is the PURPOSE of homework you may assign? Does it truly help to improve learning? In what ways? How impactful is the day of learning while at school? I hope you all have a good day! #bfc530
In scondary our Ss work in class & finish up at home. This way they do most work with support. It's work like finishing a draft of a story or finishing research - anything they can copy from friends is done in class. We also ask them to read daily #bfc530
I've flipped my class so hw has become minimal. The more I hear abt massive amounts of hw in other classes, the less I give. My class is important but so is sleep. #bfc530
I’m not a fan of a lot of homework especially if it is to just check a box. Students should read and work on things that are meaningful and beneficial for the next phase of learning at school. #bfc530
For me,
I often have class time for Ss to complete assignments. Most the time if they have homework, they didn’t use time wisely or they choose to go above & beyond. #bfc530
I dont give much and when I do, never due the next day. I give my students a week to get it done, that way they have the option when they feel the most time to complete. Mostly it is to prepare them for class or complete work they couldnt complete in class #bfc530
I've flipped my class so hw has become minimal. The more I hear abt massive amounts of hw in other classes, the less I give. My class is important but so is sleep. #bfc530
The kids enjoy homework about as much as I enjoy providing feedback when I get home from school ... only difference is I know what I am doing the kids may not #bfc530
So the lil hw i do give they submit via a google form. I can see the times they submit it. When I see tons of students submitting it after midnight, I realize it's not abt time management, it's just not worth it #bfc530
The key for me is to provide the big picture goal via our #PBL process, along with a buffet of scaffolding students use to master each course competency. This translates in students choosing to do whatever/whenever it takes to reach the goal...not imposed by me/others. #bfc530
AS much as I have been victim of bad homework as a parent, I think it's crucial for those who are looking to build skills and resilience for college.
#bfc530
Ss need to study vocab, read, revise writing, make up assignments after absent, practice music and math problems, all to support learning —but they also need free time to make those amazing “real world connections” on their own because that is where the magic happens #bfc530
#BFC530 Homework for pre-college, entering freshmen should teach time-on-task (ToT) in a controlled environment. ToT is an impt. skill for online and F2F higher ed.
I like to give Ss practice, if they want HW as practice, why should I say no? Only problem is this further exacerbates the gap in achievement I see in my class. #BFC530
Students need to be in the habit of reading regularly outside of the classroom.
You have to read the primary source to be able to learn to critically analyze.
#bfc530
#bfc530 Homework if necessary should be small in number and strategic in delivery. I love the Flipped model of having students watch an instructional video at home w/ application in the classroom, however access may be an issue for some Ss.
Here's my Australian Shepard Shanti with my kiddos. Know who used to own her ? My former freshmen world history teacher. Funny how life unfolds #NationalPetDay#bfc530
#bfc530 Thank you for a great question! I so want to learn more about #homework and the policies others follow with this. So much compelling research for giving less.
What’s the intention of the homework? If it’s for an arbitrary grade that only produces negative energy, then in the words of @jmattmiller#ditchthehomework. #bfc530
AS much as I have been victim of bad homework as a parent, I think it's crucial for those who are looking to build skills and resilience for college.
#bfc530
I have students who chose to do my classwork as homework because they like to use class time ... lunchtime ... anytime for access to GarageBand #bfc530
I agree that some hw in the upper grades is helpful for building time management & organizational skills. How to use an agenda, how to break up a project into chunks. We're working with Ss on many of these life skills #bfc530
Good morning. I’m undecided. I see both sides. In high school, some at home projects/ work are fruitful. Just completed a family genetics project. #bfc530
When the littles ask for "homework" we talk about what that looks like at our homes...relationship building, reading, playing outside, getting dirty, helping our elders, playing family games, sharing responsibilities #bfc530
Hi Alice! This might interest you. It looks at Finland experience. One of the most successful education systems has minimal homework. Reason - Research & trust that Teachers get through the material at school. cc @pasi_sahlberg See: https://t.co/88z2unTigt#DitchHW#Education
In high school I think some HW is reasonable.
I give class time to do practice sets for Math. If they don't finish (b/c they found it hard or they wasted time in class) then it's HW at home. I tell my Ss if it takes longer than 20-30mins to stop & continue another night #bfc530
So much better than my days growing up in the 70's when my biggest thrill for the season was the Mets had a winning record in Spring Training. LOL #bfc530
My reaction is a resounding, “No!” but yet I find myself doing it 🤷♀️ I think at times it’s good - watch a preview video, answer 3 quick questions-helps to prepare S for content. No grade. I get caught in the “finish work” trap too😳 Next yr goal is far less #bfc530
Exactly. My kids have to do the Odds everyday in math. Because the answers are in the back of the book and they can check their own work. Ts don't even check:(
#bfc530
Good question. A lot of the times it’s Twitter with particular hashtags such as #StuVoice. Other times it’s connecting for a video conference #globaled. It can also be for blogs, vlogs, publications. Ss are exposed to a variety of platforms. How about you? #bfc530
Hey, we really do! Have you taken a look at the question list lately? Lots of questions crossed out after being used, not so many left for us to discuss. Do your part, add a question. (feeling like an NPR pledge drive) #bfc530

#bfc530 For social studies classes, homework is to watch local, state, national and international news, and discuss it with your parents and/or friends.
Family genetics projects can be fun! I remember mine and loved it ! Of course my adopted sister was not a fan of the " alternate assignment" obviously. #bfc530
Wish my girl's district did that. Reading is something we emphasize as a family already. Everyone has to read each night, so that hw wouldnt seem like it to them. There are nights that some of those math worksheets just dont make sense #bfc530
What’s the intention of the homework? If it’s for an arbitrary grade that only produces negative energy, then in the words of @jmattmiller#ditchthehomework. #bfc530
Yes , but so many schools have a minimum requirement for grades ... 2 per week at my school ... they say don’t grade formative by their requirements speak otherwise. #bfc530
That is the project that hasnt occurred yet and Im not sure what it will evoke in my adopted daughters. (They know they are adopted but they are growing in their understanding what that means) #bfc530
There is some research that practice may be beneficial in HS. That said, if the T is using it for feedback, they can get that info from 3-5Q. In Hs if each T gives 10 mins HWK & they do 6 subjects a day = 1Hr HWK + any assignments. #bfc530
Hi #bfc530 -jumping in late- I don't send homework. I think many kids are experts at doing what need to do when they get home in order to restore their energy/focus for the next day - e.g. Playing outside, lego, speaking w/siblings,etc
Time to assign homework that matters No more worksheets even digital ones.If anything assign things Ss want to work on not have to work on.Get them excited about what they are doing and it’s no longer a task. I’ve assigned game night w/ the family. Always a good one! #bfc530
I think like anything the big question is, how is the homework being used? If a kid isn’t doing it do you know the root cause for why? If they are doing it, do you know how they did it or what help they had? What happens when a kid doesn’t complete it? #bfc530
I see the opposite with my son. He does a ton of homework for some classes, and in total it only counts for 10%. It's also only checked as complete, so there's not feedback on the work he did. Lots of time spent on it, but little impact on grade or learning. #bfc530
I've seen some great "I must share this book, everyone should read it" -type logs in various forms (print, video, review bookmark, etc) as a element of a reading community #bfc530
We work hard on creating a culture of reading - read alouds in class, daily silent reading, whole school readathons...so most Ss don't see it as hw either. And we don't use reading logs after seeing the article How to Create Non Readers by @alfiekohn#bfc530

#BFC530 Yes. E.g. Social services see BA as entry level only calling for grad. work; but also see BA as as ability to commit and complete long term project. Valid perception? Debatable.

I’m all for opportunities for Ss to contribute to our community. Some of my former Ss made recruitment videos for our school, created infographics for our school mission, vision, etc. #bfc530
Carla, I would agree with your definition! That's why I still assign some hw in middle school and give time for Ss to plan their time accordingly. #bfc530

If I gave HWK - 3Qs was sufficient. I always check&signed their work next lesson. If they had an Assessment task in play, my expectation was that they should have enough time to focus on that alone. Ts forget other Ts are also giving Hwk.Prefer they spend time with family #bfc530
....or should it constitute formative assessment (which means it needs to be carefully structured), rather than weighting it as a summative assessment task? #bfc530
Homework is inevitable— 1) make it meaningful, 2) make it relevant 3) Try to give multiple days to complete assignments b/c Ss do have homework in other classes. I also flip my lessons we can dive richer into class projects/lessons. #bfc530
Ugh, we have testing starting today. About 80% of my students opt out. So I'll most likely be with those students, reading quietly for 2 hours. #bfc530

What about option 3? "Here kids, you haven't quite mastered this, so go try some on your own and come back with either a better understanding, or questions that will help you gain one." #bfc530
Homework should consist of self- selected reading and review of material learned that day. Too much written work kills creativity and burns out students. #bfc530
I hope to see classroom policies that respect the diversity of the students in the desks, homework become a targeted intervention and not a whole-class teaching strategy, and assessments become targeted/ more authentic. #BFC530
I believe in practicing a craft. Thinking of sports, when you know the skills, you’ll practice at home knowing how to use the tools to develop fluency of motion. I expect Ss to practice outside of class. Now, I don’t grade it, just give feedback. That’s for another #bfc530
If no one asking ?s about it the next, no dialogue or discussion is facilitated, how is it different than other HW which is only checked for completion. Learning should be be about application and extension.
HomeLearning not homework. #bfc530

Anything can be read to someone. Question is has their educational journey created the necessary thinking, reflection and application of their intake. Read? Read to? #bfc530
I've applied the "rule" 10 x grade = total mins spent on homework per night, but never assign homework on weekends if completed during the week. Plus homework include student reflection &/or notice/wonder/inquiry/prediction type questions, and no expectation to finish. #bfc530
Morning, #bfc530. My answer's maybe & revolves around combo of semantics + what-ifs like: What if teachers *invite* students to apply what they're learning beyond school walls, or what if students *choose* to do this? What if HW plays part in distributed or spaced practice?
I would like to see schools embrace the idea that there is no such thing as “the average student.” I can work to encourage others and incorporate #UDL into my lesson plans. Change the environment, not the kids. #endofaverage#bfc530

Presumably, traditional concept like homework could be rebooted according to UDL principles, yes? Here's one take in this direction: https://t.co/tHIE1ixgPW#bfc530
