#caedchat is for California educators, by California educators. All are welcome as moderators and participants discuss issues that emerge in California education, which are generally applicable to other regions of the United States.
Welcome to #caedchat, where educators gather to share and collaborate! Tonight’s topic is Love it, Leave it, Revamp It: Shifts in EDU with @KrisciaCabral.
Kim from Placentia Yorba Linda USD, coming to you from Balboa Island. I am a K-12 Digital Learning Coach. Always fun to engage in educational discussions :) #caedchat
Welcome Ricardo! You’re definitely in the right place to learn from others and take back to staff! Invite them to join us next Sunday! Be sure to add others to your PLN to continue your growth! #caedchat
Tonight’s chat will focus on six areas where a shift has occurred in edu.
There will be a Q or prompt and feel free to share your opinion of Love it, Leave it, or Revamp it with… #caedchat
Tech coach from southern California, former classroom and SpEd teacher. I'm always looking to learn about what others are doing or thinking in their districts and schools. #caedchat
A1: Less script for sure. Carefully crafted EQs. I think it is so very important to meet the needs of the learners in front of you. Backwards mapping to ensure you are teaching the content required. #CAedchat
I agree Kim. I LOVE EQs and the process of backwards design and making sure Ss are aware of where they are going and what they are looking for. Learning is about the journey! #caedchat

Q1: Revamp it! Speaking as a newer teacher I do see the benefits in scripted texts, but teachers should be treated as professionals and be allowed that professional judgement to supplement as necessary. #CAedchat
A1 #caedchat I appreciated the teacher scripted textbooks, especially when a new teacher. I didn't have to use the script, but sometimes, they were helpful in providing a guide.
Q1: Revamp it! Speaking as a newer teacher I do see the benefits in scripted texts, but teachers should be treated as professionals and be allowed that professional judgement to supplement as necessary. #CAedchat
A2 Do what works! Each class may be different. I've used stools, painted car tires with pillows, and now talk to teachers about #Buoychairs (adjustable height wobble-like chairs), yoga balls, adjustable desks, etc. #caedchat
I personally LOVE flexible seating! Ricardo asked about funding. I’ve used @DonorsChoose for most and asked for donations for others. I love the freedom of choice and different learning spaces for Ss to explore. #caedchat
A1: I appreciate the scripted textbooks but recognize the need for higher level and lower level essential questioning to meet the needs of all learners in the classroom. #caedchat
A2: Revamp- I am hesitant to be "all in". I am out of the classroom at this time. I would definitely try to de-front the classroom, allow for some choice in seating. You need to have strong classroom management to make it function well. #caedchat
A2: Love it! I can see serious benefit in having flexible seating. Every student has their unique needs and preferences. What fits one won’t fit all. #CAedchat
Great answer! Do what you feel comfortable with! Flexible seating doesn’t have to be fancy or pricey.
Your seating could be a mix of traditional and flexible to accommodate all.

A2: I believe in a combination of flexible seating and traditional seating. I absolutely abhor rows though. I like small groupings and the option for Ss to choose to move seats as needed. #caedchat
Agree. There are even some districts w/ rules as to classroom furniture. I enjoy a variety of seating in my room and like to offer choices to ss. #caedchat

I like this response. The scripted text is a good starting place at times. Being able to integrate your personal strengths and teaching ability to personalize the learning is key. #caedchat

Q3:Encouraging Collaboration: From individual work to various forms of partner work and real world learning with support from various platforms.

A3 HyperDocs, Choice Boards, Playlists, Inquiry Based and Project Based Learning open provide avenues for learning experiences that promote UDL and the success of all learners. #caedchat
History teacher from So. Cal. Hoping to use twitter/chats to improve my practice and expand my network of peers and colleagues who discuss issues that affect the classroom and quality of teaching. First edchat ever-hoping not to make that too obvious #caedchat

A3 I think it is similar to the furniture issue. Each student and each group is different. Love it, Leave it, Revamp it depending on what works with each class. Have a sampling of everything! #caedchat
A1: Love it. There are proven curricula out there, but they're too often perceived as being constraints on teacher autonomy https://t.co/S38qtQsxdU#CAedchat

A3: Revamp it! After giving the ELPAC, what we saw was that students didn’t know how to work independently because of the culture of collaboration. So either we need to revamp the tests or revamp the format of collaboration. #CAedchat
A3: Love it. It's reflective of what students will face in the workforce, especially as more routine tasks are automated and lower skills jobs are displaced. #CAedchat
A3: I see a deeper sense of well-rounded learning when Ss work in collaboration groups. I also feel like they sometimes over depend on their peers. I’m happy to continue having opportunities for both. #caedchat
Good point! You need a variety to reach all learners. We may be preparing them for jobs that don't exist yet. They'll benefit from being comfortable with different styles. #caedchat
A3: We have got to teach and foster collaboration. I think there is room to revamp the teaching part of it. There is a lot of assigning collaborative tasks w/o the teaching support. #caedchat
Q4 is set. Keep watch for it. #caedchat The support needed for collaborative work is key. It’s just like anything else we teach kids. They need to see modeling and be offered support the best ways to work together. #caedchat

Brian here, former elementary teacher, now app developer and PM at PowerApps. I'm catching up on tonight's #caedchat. :)
A1: Ditch the textbook--almost. Use it as a resource, not a requirement.
#DitchBook

Q4. Assessments: From formal graded tests to informal assessments, exit tickets, back channels, project-based learning. Love it, Leave it, Revamp it #caedchat
A4: I love PBL - I really wish I had more time for it this past year. I think with our changing science standards that there is now a real opportunity to expand on PBL experiences in the classroom! I wish more schools were on board with it, though! #caedchat
A4 Revamp! Use assessment formatively to inform instruction. Need to provide specific feedback in a timely manner. Allow time for reflection. Measure learning...not just generating a score/grade. #nozero#caedchat
A4: Love it, Leave it, and Revamp it!! There are good and bad aspects to every part of assessments. Based on the way education, technology and society/culture is moving, there is a major change that needs to happen. #CAedchat
I think it’s important not to reshape our classrooms b/c of one assessment. I know that’s easier said than done w/ high stakes, but these kinds of decisions matter. #caedchat
Yes, It is as if some Ss don't know how to think or produce independently and they rely so much on each other...to the point that you see them looking to each other for what to do. They get into the habit of thinking someone else will listen to the directions. #caedchat
A4: Love it, though provide more opportunities for students to retake and/or demonstrate mastery when they don't clear the bar on the first attempt. #CAedchat
I LOVE PBL! I agree with you Kristin. I think with the integration of the new Science Standards and need to go deeper with topics, there will hopefully be more schools onboard to do so.
#caedchat

A4: Continue to revamp assessments. If the goal is student learning and mastery, then both T & S need to know what they know, what they need help mastering. #caedchat
A4 Ss enjoy "game"-like learning like @quizizz. Play to all students' strengths and use a variety to give many a chance to succeed. Some may love to talk in person, others may prefer @Flipgrid to record in private; collaborative writing in #OneNote or Word or Docs. #caedchat
I completely agree. Unfortunately, districts don't always see it that way. With the CA Dashboard, so much emphasis is being placed on the CAASPP assessment scores. Admins think that this one test is indicative of what learning goes on in the classroom. #caedchat
Yes! I taught a K-3 special education classroom this year and we really focused on design thinking. Such a great way to promote problem solving and growth mindset with my young kiddos! #caedchat

I believe that students need to learn how to work independently and collaboratively. They need to be able to problem solve when no one is around and communicate clearly when with others. (regardless of testing...real life skills) #CAedchat
Q5: Lesson Design- From a one-size fits all lesson design to a flexible learning path that meets the needs for a variety of learners.
Love it, Leave it, Revamp it. #caedchat
Q5: As a (newly) former SPED T, lesson designs that meet the needs of all learners are a MUST! As a science and tech nerd, I'm a big advocate of the 5E lesson design and how easily it can be incorporated into routines/lessons that are already done in the classroom. #caedchat
A5- I think my A3 answer works here. With tech at our fingertips, we can create learning pathways that will yield greater engagement, empowerment, and success for students #hyperdocs#flipgrid#eduprotocols#caedchat
A4: I generally love assessments but always believe they don't always show what Ss know, so when we see that Ss haven't answered many of the questions, we have to give options to share what they know verbally. Think 504 plan even for kids who are not formally known. #caedchat
Curious to hear what you think of the Dashboard. It's been skewered nationally as being highly inscrutable (esp. to parents), but it seems like the state is sticking to their guns here. #CAedchat

A3 Love it-in moderation . Like most practices, the devil is in the details I’ve used groups well and sometimes they’ve flopped. Experience and understanding your desired outcomes are very important to be able to match the structure to the task. #caedchat
Yes! All we hear about is what color we are in. My students' growth is NOT measured in colors!! I wish the higher ups would acknowledge that - especially for our diverse learners (ELLs and SPED). #caedchat
Thanks...I think it's important to be well-rounded. I was very shy in school, especially in elementary and I would have benefited from more collaborative activities (even though I prefer working alone :) #CAedchat
A5: complicated lol I’m conflicted because I know it should be much more individualized but at the same time the district wants us all doing basically the same thing. #CAedchat
That is tricky. How can you take that concept and break it apart to meet the needs of everyone without straying too far off the beaten path? Do you have a team to collaborate with? That always helps! #caedchat
A5 Love lesson plans being formalized because it gives accountability to the T to be on target w course outlines, but believe that authentic learning sometimes will make the best made plans take a detour and as a principal, I am ok with that. #caedchat
A4: #Assessments
Love it.
I also believe in state tests + Ts being able to both “teach to the test” while simultaneously teaching standards + PBL + exit tickets + formal/informal assessments. #CAedchat

This is why I absolutely loved integrating FlipGrid this year in my 3rd grade classroom. Being able to hear students explain math concepts helped me better assess their learning process. #CAedchat

Q6:Tech Integration- From very little tech use in the classroom to screen casting lessons for Ss and accepting digital assignments from Ss.
Love it, Leave it, Revamp it.
#caedchat
A6: Strike a tech balance. Plan based on learning objective, not tech for tech's sake. Leverage tech to make provide access, engagement, and expression. If it is better paper/pencil...do it paper/pencil! #caedchat
Math is difficult to differentiate assessments for. As Ts - I know that using the assessments from curriculum are helpful. I also know there are multiple ways to assess Ss. #CAedchat

A6: <3 it! This year I tried to "flip" my classroom more than previous years - more online, interactive, collaborative activities. Homework was digital for the most part. Provided screencasts for parents learning Google Classroom! Def. a place for tech in my classroom! #caedchat
Agree. Real learning is not always scripted. Learning - like life - is full of detours. Detours make learning interesting, authentic and more enduring #caedchat

A4- Revamp. There is way too much standardized testing. I’d love to see CA Ss take in grades 3, 6 and 8 only. We spend so much time assessing and prepping to assess that we lose valuable learning and teaching time and run into test fatigue which becomes school fatigue. #caedchat
A6: I love meaningful tech integration, but not just for tech sake. Digital tools allow so many positives. That being said, I find myself more and more aware of ss and screen time. #caedchat
I actually did the opposite - After students went through the writing process they shared their final draft through FlipGrid. It was good for practicing presentation skills. #CAedchat
A6: Tech Integration 📲💻🔬
Love it. Revamp it.
🤔 Schools need a higher accountability towards tech integration. I keep
reading 📰articles + seeing posts
where Tech is purcha💲ed but it either isn’t used or it doesn’t affect pedagogy + grades.
#CAedchat
Love tech integration as it gives opportunities for showing mastery not always had w textbook learning. Completely support flipped learning as it let's Ss hear lecture for HW and have time w their T to work out problems and dive deeper. #caedchat
Me Too!! My Ss picked it up so fast and felt comfortable playing around with it (use of the pause button, working in pairs, asking for longer time frames). #CAedchat
A7: My favorite EduTools from this year - @Flipgrid , @GetKahoot, @ClassDojo, and @PearDeck. Students loved collaborating, checking their knowledge, and having authentic conversations about the learning that was going on in our classroom. #caedchat
in the classroom I use all types of assessments but am looking their relationships to final grades-too many compliance grades. I’m not even sure the A-F system is sound. It sometimes seems detrimental to learning but...it’s just easy and been around forever #caedchat
