Welcome to our #CreateEdu chat! This week we are chatting about collaboration in creative problem solving with Lisa Dabbs (@teachwithsoul). Introduce yourself and where you're from.
A1. Creative problem solving is taking a fresh, unique and unexplored view of a solution to a proposed challenge. It’s all about thinking without borders or constraints. Sometimes the best ideas emerge this way. #CreateEDU
A1 Using collaboration, creativity, compassion, critical thinking, and more to creatively look at a problem from every angle and solve it through the process of iteration #CreateEdu

A1: Creative problem solving needs to involve collaboration. To think that you have the only answer is kind of arrogant! Team up with others so that you can see the various sides of the issue. The challenge, of course, is synthesizing the input to find the solution(s). #CreateEdu
Thank you, Lisa! ☺️ I think it’s very important to encourage new perspectives and sometimes it’s challenging to go outside the borders. However, when you do, that’s where the creative magic happens! #CreateEDU
A1 Creative problem solving is when you or your students find a way to view something differently than before. It gets exciting when you start down completely different paths than you expected to. #CreateEdu
Creative problem solving is best done when we let go of our what if, but maybe, or what would ____ think? and simply just rattle solution ideas freely, using any of the tools around you to jerry rig solutions. #createedu
A1 (continued): This collaboration definitely applies to working with our students on their own problems. Asking them what they should do or how they would fix an issue is huge, even if they don't have an answer. It lets them know that their voice & input is valued. #CreateEdu
A1 Creative Problem Solving: Using diverse ways of knowing and naming the world to critically analyze problems & solutions created within defined contraints and needs. #CreateEdu
Many to choose from! The Louise to my Thelma & partner in crime @Alissaag02, long time ITS bud, sci guy, & master 3D print maker @StevenFrenchITS, & super rad coaches in my #DPVILS network. #createedu
A3 take away all tech, give them a challenge, allow collaboration, see what they come up with. Have a gallery walk of products, allow for revisions, then have a showcase. They need to see that being creative is being free to think big and collaboration is key. #createedu
A3: I have found that the more you encourage creative problem solving the more the will do it. #createedu Also, @geniushour has given me the ability to find out what students are curious about and help them figure it out.
A3 It is important to recognize they are still learning CPS skills. As learners acquire more reasoning, knowledge, & skills, they can develop CPS 'fluency'. Too often, T's launch into CPS expecting a solution when the focus is still about the process. #CreateEdu
I disagree. Ideas that emerge in group think generally reflect those of the dominant culture of communication or typical norms of thinking. It is more effective to provide opportunities for individual brainstorming. #diversity#CreateEdu
A3 With my 1st graders I often share a problem I had, ask them how they would solve it, and share how I solved it. It's even better when the problem presents itself in class and we have to solve it right then e.g. the kids were amazed when I could teach w/o power once. #CreateEdu
I don't believe so. Adding constraints is likely to push creative outcomes. With practice. It doesn't just happen automatically. We can help students see constraints, like limited resources, as way to look at our resources differently. #createedu@AdobeEdu
A4: really important question! I think my friends at @youthdriven would have great insights here. They do amazing work, having youth and adults deliver workshops to youth and adults, around creative and respectful ways for youth and adults to interact. Check them out! #CreateEdu
A4.Servant leadership, communication and visionaries are in every classroom, BUT we have to put the PowerPoint/Google Slide lecture style teaching down to discover it.#createedu
A4: To solve problems creatively, Ss need to develop speaking/listening skills: active listening, learning to respond logically instead of emotionally. Also, learning how to effectively use available resources (print/online sources AND the other voices in the room). #CreateEdu

Very true. This isn't a one size fits all. Depending on the challenge ahead and the learning outcomes you're looking for. I just wouldn't eliminate it as an option. Our space program would even pose potential problems to astronauts & provide them limited resources #createedu
I spent 3 weeks in an art camp up north. We did not have fancy studios or materials. The furniture was deliberately uncomfortable to create discomfort. Even the brain surgeon found it challenging but rewarding! #CreateEdu many S'a can find choice overwhelming

I guess I always think of those - "If you had an unlimited budget" type of solutions to problems. And then I think of my "You only have these resources available to you" The latter produced much more creative and diverse solutions. #createedu

Another great chat, but I must go (sad face). THANK YOU to the moderators for a great chat - always awesome to connect and hear from all of you! Happy Thursday, everyone! #CreateEdu
We had to resolve our discomfort and figure out if our the restrictions were information or disinformation or unease or disease, form or deform ... You get the idea. #CreateEdu

A4: I think adopting a "yes, and" way of adding to the convo they may be facilitating about solving a problem. So communication is a must. But within that, ways to ask questions that build on previous answers/solutions/ideas.

Last Q for our chat! ==>>>Q6: Dealing with obstacles in our work is a naturally occuring challenge. Share a time when you were able to apply CPS successfully? #CreateEdu
A6: I am not sure if all organizations have a culture of CPS? I think "innovation" might be more trendy job title at times. What are the structures, systems, & world views that are present? Which ones don't have a voice? #CreateEdu
A6: I had a blog article that was due. I hit a creative block. I needed to activate my head, so I turned up some music and ran through Choreography in my head. Getting my mind to create dance, helped me to create the next sentence. Blog to be published in 2 weeks #CreateEDU
A6: As a principal I had to tackle many a challenging issue. Getting creative to solve them was a need. Learning to rely on others in CPS style supported me to get more buy-in. #createEDU
